Deze studie onderzoekt de invloed van ouderlijke steun in de opvoeding op angst bij peuters en het modererende effect van de geboortevolgorde. Longitudinaire data van 88 ouders met een kind van anderhalf jaar oud ten tijde van het eerste meetmoment en twee jaar oud ten tijde van het tweede meetmoment is gebruikt. Van de kinderen waren 46 het eerstgeboren kind en 42 een later geboren kind. Ouderlijke steun is gemeten middels de Comprehensive Early Childhood Parenting Questionnaire (CECPAQ). Angst bij het kind is gemeten middels de Child Behavior Checklist 1,5 – 5 (CBCL 1,5 – 5). Uit de resultaten van de multipele regressieanalyse is gebleken dat eerste en later geboren kinderen niet verschilden in de mate van angstig gedrag. Tevens hangt ouderlijke steun in de opvoeding op anderhalfjarige leeftijd niet samen met angstig gedrag op tweejarige leeftijd. Er blijkt dan ook geen modererend effect te zijn van de geboortevolgorde in de relatie tussen ouderlijke steun en angst bij het kind. Aanbevolen wordt om toekomstig onderzoek te richten op meerdere opvoedaspecten om eventuele verschillen tussen eerste en later geboren kinderen in angstig gedrag te kunnen verklaren.

According to the Resource Control Theory (RCT) dominance (in terms of resource control) can be gained through two different strategies: prosocial and coercive strategies. Based on the use of these two strategies, five resource control types can be differentiated: prosocial controllers, coercive controllers, bistrategics, noncontrollers and typicals. Research has shown that bistrategics are the most dominant. They are assumed to have social skills, but that has not been investigated yet. The goal of this study was to see if bistrategics have the most social skills (in terms of prosocial skills and social manipulation). In the present study 619 11- to 14-year-old adolescents participated (53% boys) who where in the first grade of secondary school. The adolescents were classified in the resource control types by peer ratings. The results showed that bistrategics score high on resource control, although they did not score higher than coercive controllers. Neither did the bistrategics score higher on social skills than the other resource control types. However, coercive controllers did show a higher use of social manipulation than bistrategics. It seems likely to assume that gaining dominance is influenced by more than social skills and that there are more ways to measure dominance. Implications for further research are discussed.

Achtergrond: Risicofactoren voor de ontwikkeling van internaliserende problemen bij jonge kinderen liggen bij het kind zelf en hun omgeving. Vooral ouders spelen een belangrijke rol. De opvoedstijl die zij hanteren, heeft een grote invloed op de ontwikkeling van hun kind. Eerder onderzoek toont aan dat er een verband bestaat tussen ouderlijke controle en internaliserende problemen bij kinderen. Terwijl eerdere studies uitsluitend de relatie tussen ouderlijke controle en internaliserende problemen bij kinderen hebben onderzocht, zal dit onderzoek zich richten op de relatie tussen gedragscontrole en psychologische controle van ouders met internaliserende problemen bij kinderen. Verder zal worden nagegaan of het ouderlijk geslacht van invloed is op de ontwikkeling van internaliserende problemen. Methoden: De verbanden tussen psychologische en gedragscontrole van ouders en internaliserende problemen bij kinderen (N = 600 kinderen, van 300 moeders en 300 vaders) zijn onderzocht met behulp van gegevens van een cross-sectioneel onderzoek 'Opvoeden, hoe doen ouders in Nederland dat?'. Hiernaast is de factor ouderlijk geslacht als moderator beschouwd. Resultaten: Er is een positieve correlatie tussen zowel gedragscontrole als psychologische controle met internaliserende problemen gevonden. Verder lijkt het erop dat psychologische en gedragscontrole van ouders belangrijke voorspellers zijn van internaliserende problemen bij kinderen. Vooral vaderlijke controle lijkt een voorspeller van deze problemen. Ouderlijk geslacht blijkt echter geen moderator te zijn. Conclusie: Zowel psychologische als gedragscontrole van ouders kunnen internaliserende problemen bij kinderen voorspellen. Het blijkt dat vaders een grotere invloed op de ontwikkeling van deze problemen hebben, wanneer zij psychologische of gedragscontrole hanteren.

__Background:__ The need for accessible and motivating treatment approaches within mental health has led to the development of an Internet-based serious game intervention (called "Plan-It Commander") as an adjunct to treatment as usual for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). __Objective:__ The aim was to determine the effects of Plan-It Commander on daily life skills of children with ADHD in a multisite randomized controlled crossover open-label trial. __Methods:__ Participants (N=170) in this 20-week trial had a diagnosis of ADHD and ranged in age from 8 to 12 years (male: 80.6%, 137/170; female: 19.4%, 33/170). They were randomized to a serious game intervention group (group 1; n=88) or a treatment-as-usual crossover group (group 2; n=82). Participants randomized to group 1 received a serious game intervention in addition to treatment as usual for the first 10 weeks and then received treatment as usual for the next 10 weeks. Participants randomized to group 2 received treatment as usual for the first 10 weeks and crossed over to the serious game intervention in addition to treatment as usual for the subsequent 10 weeks. Primary (parent report) and secondary (parent, teacher, and child self-report) outcome measures were administered at baseline, 10 weeks, and 10-week follow-up. __Results:__ After 10 weeks, participants in group 1 compared to group 2 achieved significantly greater improvements on the primary outcome of time management skills (parent-reported; P=.004) and on secondary outcomes of the social skill of responsibility (parent-reported; P=.04), and working memory (parent-reported; P=.02). Parents and teachers reported that total social skills improved over time within groups, whereas effects on total social skills and teacher-reported planning/organizing skills were nonsignificant between groups. __Abstract__ Al op peuterleeftijd zijn er bij sommige kinderen signalen van overmatige angst zichtbaar. De BIQ-SF, een korte en makkelijk af te nemen vragenlijst, blijkt uitermate geschikt om allochtone en autochtone jonge kinderen in de Nederlandse populatie met een verhoogd risico op de ontwikkeling van angstproblemen op te sporen.

This study examined the relations between behavioral inhibition, Big Five personality traits, and anxiety disorder symptoms in non-clinical children (n = 147) and clinically anxious children (n = 45) aged 6-13 years. Parents completed the Behavioral Inhibition Questionnaire-Short Form, the Big Five Questionnaire for Children, and the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders-Revised. Results indicated that, compared to parents of non-clinical children, parents of clinically anxious children rated their offspring higher on neuroticism and behavioral inhibition, but lower on extraversion, conscientiousness, and intellect/openness. Further, extraversion emerged as the strongest correlate of an inhibited temperament, and this appeared true for the clinically anxious as well as the non-clinical children. Finally, in both the clinical and non-clinical samples, higher levels of behavioral inhibition and neuroticism were unique and significant predictors of anxiety disorders symptoms.

The Behavioral Inhibition Questionnaire-Short Form (BIQ-SF) is a 14-item parent-rating scale for assessing an inhibited, anxiety-prone temperament in preschool children. This study examined the psychometric properties of the BIQ-SF scores in a multi-ethnic community population of Dutch boys and girls aged 2.5-6 years (total N = 2,343, from which various subsamples were derived). Results revealed that the factor structure of the BIQ-SF was as hypothesized: a model with six correlated factors representing children's inhibited behaviors in various social and non-social contexts provided a good fit for the data. The internal consistency of the BIQ-SF was generally satisfactory and scores on the scale were found to be fairly stable over a time period of up to 2 years. Parent-teacher agreement was acceptable, and relations between the BIQ-SF and observations of an inhibited temperament were moderate. Finally, BIQ-SF scores were positively associated with measures of anxiety and internalizing symptoms, whereas no significant links were found with externalizing symptoms. Altogether, these results provide support for the reliability and validity of the BIQ-SF as an economical method for assessing behavioral inhibition and anxiety proneness in young children.
