We show that a quantum spin system has an exact free-parafermion solution if its frustration graph is an oriented indifference graph. Further, we show that if the frustration graph of a model can be dipath oriented via switching operations, then the model is integrable in the sense that there is a family of commuting independent set charges. Additionally, we establish an efficient algorithm for deciding whether this is possible. Our characterisation extends that given for free-fermion solvability. This paper studies the structure of graphs with given tree-width and excluding a fixed complete bipartite subgraph, which generalises the bounded degree setting. We give a new structural description of such graphs in terms of so-called quasi-tree-partitions. We demonstrate the utility of this result through applications to (fractional) clustered colouring. Further generalisations of these structural and colouring results are presented.

A colouring of a graph $G$ has clustering $k$ if the maximum number of vertices in a monochromatic component equals $k$. Motivated by recent results showing that many natural graph classes are subgraphs of the strong product of a graph with bounded treewidth and a path, this paper studies clustered colouring of strong products of two bounded treewidth graphs, where none, one, or both graphs have bounded degree. For example, in the case of two colours, if $n$ is the number of vertices in the product, then we show that clustering $\Theta(n^{2/3})$ is best possible, even if one of the graphs is a path. However, if both graphs have bounded degree, then clustering $\Theta(n^{1/2})$ is best possible. With three colours, if one of the graphs has bounded degree, then we show that clustering $\Theta(n^{3/7})$ is best possible. However, if neither graph has bounded degree, then clustering $\Omega(n^{1/2})$ is necessary. More general bounds for any given number of colours are also presented.

We show that every $n$-vertex planar graph is contained in the graph obtained from a fan by blowing up each vertex by a complete graph of order $O(\sqrt{n}\log^2 n)$. Equivalently, every $n$-vertex planar graph $G$ has a set $X$ of $O(\sqrt{n}\log^2 n)$ vertices such that $G-X$ has bandwidth $O(\sqrt{n}\log^2 n)$. This result holds in the more general setting of graphs contained in the strong product of a bounded treewidth graph and a path, which includes bounded genus graphs, graphs excluding a fixed apex graph as a minor, and $k$-planar graphs for fixed $k$. These results are obtained using two ingredients. The first is a new local sparsification lemma, which shows that every $n$-vertex planar graph $G$ has a set of $O((n\log n)/D)$ vertices whose removal results in a graph with local density at most $D$. There are finitely many graphs with diameter $2$ and girth 5. What if the girth 5 assumption is relaxed? Apart from stars, are there finitely many triangle-free graphs with diameter $2$ and no $K_{2,3}$ subgraph? This question is related to the existence of triangle-free strongly regular graphs, but allowing for a range of co-degrees gives the question a more extremal flavour. More generally, for fixed $s$ and $t$, are there infinitely many twin-free triangle-free $K_{s,t}$-free graphs with diameter 2? This paper presents partial results regarding these questions, including computational results, potential Cayley-graph and probabilistic constructions.

The defective chromatic number of a graph class $\mathcal{G}$ is the minimum integer $k$ such that for some integer $d$, every graph in $\mathcal{G}$ is $k$-colourable such that each monochromatic component has maximum degree at most $d$. Similarly, the clustered chromatic number of a graph class $\mathcal{G}$ is the minimum integer $k$ such that for some integer $c$, every graph in $\mathcal{G}$ is $k$-colourable such that each monochromatic component has at most $c$ vertices. This paper determines or establishes bounds on the defective and clustered chromatic numbers of graphs with given girth in minor-closed classes defined by the following parameters: Hadwiger number, treewidth, pathwidth, treedepth, circumference, and feedback vertex number. One striking result is that for any integer $k$, for the class of triangle-free graphs with treewidth $k$, the defective chromatic number, clustered chromatic number and chromatic number are all equal. The same result holds for graphs with treedepth $k$, and generalises for graphs with no $K_p$ subgraph. We also show, via a result of K\"{u}hn and Osthus~[2003], that $K_t$-minor-free graphs with girth $g\geq 5$ are properly $O(t^{c_g})$ colourable, where $c_g\in(0,1)$ with $c_g\to 0$, thus asymptotically improving on Hadwiger's Conjecture.

Motivated by recent developments regarding the product structure of planar graphs, we study relationships between treewidth, grid minors, and graph products. We show that the Cartesian product of any two connected $n$-vertex graphs contains an $\Omega(\sqrt{n})\times\Omega(\sqrt{n})$ grid minor. This result is tight: The lexicographic product (which includes the Cartesian product as a subgraph) of a star and any $n$-vertex tree has no $\omega(\sqrt{n})\times\omega(\sqrt{n})$ grid minor.

A multigraph drawn in the plane is non-homotopic if no two edges connecting the same pair of vertices can be continuously deformed into each other without passing through a vertex, and is $k$-crossing if every pair of edges (self-)intersects at most $k$ times. We prove that the number of edges in an $n$-vertex non-homotopic $k$-crossing multigraph is at most $6^{13 n (k + 1)}$, which is a big improvement over previous upper bounds. We also study this problem in the setting of monotone drawings where every edge is an x-monotone curve. We show that the number of edges, $m$, in such a drawing is at most $2 \binom{2n}{k + 1}$ and the number of crossings is $\Omega\bigl(\frac{m^{2 + 1/k}}{n^{1 + 1/k}}\bigr)$. The clustered chromatic number of a graph class $\mathcal{G}$ is the minimum integer $c$ such that every graph $G\in\mathcal{G}$ has a $c$-colouring where each monochromatic component in $G$ has bounded size. We study the clustered chromatic number of graph classes $\mathcal{G}_H^{\text{odd}}$ defined by excluding a graph $H$ as an odd-minor. How does the structure of $H$ relate to the clustered chromatic number of $\mathcal{G}_H^{\text{odd}}$? Using a proof method by Norin, Scott, Seymour and Wood (2019), we show that the clustered chromatic number of $\mathcal{G}_H^{\text{odd}}$ is tied to the tree-depth of $H$.

We prove that the $k$-power of any planar graph $G$ is contained in $H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_{f(\Delta(G),k)}$ for some graph $H$ with treewidth $15\,288\,899$, some path $P$, and some function $f$. This resolves an open problem of Ossona de Mendez. In fact, we prove a more general result in terms of shallow minors that implies similar results for many `beyond planar' graph classes, without dependence on $\Delta(G)$. For example, we prove that every $k$-planar graph is contained in $H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_{f(k)}$ for some graph $H$ with treewidth $15\,288\,899$ and some path $P$, and some function $f$. This resolves an open problem of Dujmovi\'c, Morin and Wood. We generalise all these results for graphs of bounded Euler genus, still with an absolute bound on the treewidth. At the heart of our proof is the following new concept of independent interest. An $\ell$-blocking partition of a graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into connected sets such that every path of length greater than $\ell$ in $G$ contains at least two vertices in one part. We prove that every graph of Euler genus $g$ has a $894$-blocking partition with parts of size bounded by a function of $\Delta(G)$ and $g$. Motivated by this result, we study blocking partitions in their own right. We show that every graph has a $2$-blocking partition with parts of size bounded by a function of $\Delta(G)$ and $\textrm{tw}(G)$. On the other hand, we show that 4-regular graphs do not have $\ell$-blocking partitions with bounded size parts.

We prove that for every planar graph $X$ of treedepth $h$, there exists a positive integer $c$ such that for every $X$-minor-free graph $G$, there exists a graph $H$ of treewidth at most $f(h)$ such that $G$ is isomorphic to a subgraph of $H\boxtimes K_c$. This is a qualitative strengthening of the Grid-Minor Theorem of Robertson and Seymour (JCTB 1986), and treedepth is the optimal parameter in such a result. As an example application, we use this result to improve the upper bound for weak coloring numbers of graphs excluding a fixed graph as a minor.

Hadwiger's Conjecture asserts that every $K_h$-minor-free graph is properly $(h-1)$-colourable. We prove the following improper analogue of Hadwiger's Conjecture: for fixed $h$, every $K_h$-minor-free graph is $(h-1)$-colourable with monochromatic components of bounded size. The number of colours is best possible regardless of the size of monochromatic components. It solves an open problem of Edwards, Kang, Kim, Oum and Seymour [\emph{SIAM J. Disc. Math.} 2015], and concludes a line of research initiated in 2007. Similarly, for fixed $t\geq s$, we show that every $K_{s,t}$-minor-free graph is $(s+1)$-colourable with monochromatic components of bounded size. The number of colours is best possible, solving an open problem of van de Heuvel and Wood [\emph{J.~London Math.\ Soc.} 2018]. We actually prove a single theorem from which both of the above results are immediate corollaries. For an excluded apex minor, we strengthen the result as follows: for fixed $t\geq s\geq 3$, and for any fixed apex graph $X$, every $K_{s,t}$-subgraph-free $X$-minor-free graph is $(s+1)$-colourable with monochromatic components of bounded size. We prove that for every tree $T$ of radius $h$, there is an integer $c$ such that every $T$-minor-free graph is contained in $H\boxtimes K_c$ for some graph $H$ with pathwidth at most $2h-1$. This is a qualitative strengthening of the Excluded Tree Minor Theorem of Robertson and Seymour (GM I). We show that radius is the right parameter to consider in this setting, and $2h-1$ is the best possible bound.

A circle graph is an intersection graph of a set of chords of a circle. We describe the unavoidable induced subgraphs of circle graphs with large treewidth. This includes examples that are far from the `usual suspects'. Our results imply that treewidth and Hadwiger number are linearly tied on the class of circle graphs, and that the unavoidable induced subgraphs of a vertex-minor-closed class with large treewidth are the usual suspects if and only if the class has bounded rank-width. Using the same tools, we also study the treewidth of graphs $G$ that have a circular drawing whose crossing graph is well-behaved in some way. In this setting, we show that if the crossing graph is $K_t$-minor-free, then $G$ has treewidth at most $12t-23$ and has no $K_{2,4t}$-topological minor. On the other hand, we show that there are graphs with arbitrarily large Hadwiger number that have circular drawings whose crossing graphs are $2$-degenerate.

Alon, Seymour and Thomas [1990] proved that every $n$-vertex graph excluding $K_t$ as a minor has treewidth less than $t^{3/2}\sqrt{n}$. Illingworth, Scott and Wood [2022] recently refined this result by showing that every such graph is a subgraph of some graph with treewidth $t-2$, where each vertex is blown up by a complete graph of order $O(\sqrt{tn})$. Solving an open problem of Illingworth, Scott and Wood [2022], we prove that the treewidth bound can be reduced to $4$ while keeping blowups of order $O_t(\sqrt{n})$. As an extension of the Lipton--Tarjan theorem, in the case of planar graphs, we show that the treewidth can be further reduced to $2$, which is best possible. We generalise this result for $K_{3,t}$-minor-free graphs, with blowups of order $O(t\sqrt{n})$. Product structure theorems are a collection of recent results that have been used to resolve a number of longstanding open problems on planar graphs and related graph classes. One particularly useful version states that every planar graph $G$ is contained in the strong product of a $3$-tree $H$, a path $P$, and a $3$-cycle $K_3$; written as $G\subseteq H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_3$. A number of researchers have asked if this theorem can be strengthened so that the maximum degree in $H$ can be bounded by a function of the maximum degree in $G$. We show that no such strengthening is possible. Specifically, we describe an infinite family $\mathcal{G}$ of planar graphs of maximum degree $5$ such that, if an $n$-vertex member $G$ of $\mathcal{G}$ is isomorphic to a subgraph of $H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_c$ where $P$ is a path and $H$ is a graph of maximum degree $\Delta$ and treewidth $t$, then $t\Delta c \ge 2^{\Omega(\sqrt{\log\log n})}$., Comment: Small corrections, clearer notation

A graph class $\mathcal{G}$ has linear growth if, for each graph $G \in \mathcal{G}$ and every positive integer $r$, every subgraph of $G$ with radius at most $r$ contains $O(r)$ vertices. In this paper, we show that every graph class with linear growth has bounded treewidth.

A "tree-partition" of a graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ such that identifying the vertices in each part gives a tree. It is known that every graph with treewidth $k$ and maximum degree $\Delta$ has a tree-partition with parts of size $O(k\Delta)$. We prove the same result with the extra property that the underlying tree has maximum degree $O(\Delta)$ and $O(|V(G)|/k)$ vertices.

The clustering of a graph coloring is the maximum size of monochromatic components. This paper studies colorings with bounded clustering in graph classes with bounded layered treewidth, which include planar graphs, graphs of bounded Euler genus, graphs embeddable on a fixed surface with a bounded number of crossings per edge, map graphs, amongst other examples. Our main theorem says that every graph with layered treewidth at most $k$ and with maximum degree at most $\Delta$ is $3$-colorable with clustering $O(k^{19}\Delta^{37})$. This is the first known polynomial bound on the clustering. Assume $\lambda=\{k_1,k_2, \ldots, k_q\}$ is a partition of $k_{\lambda} = \sum_{i=1}^q k_i$. A $\lambda$-list assignment of $G$ is a $k_\lambda$-list assignment $L$ of $G$ such that the colour set $\bigcup_{v \in V(G)}L(v)$ can be partitioned into $|\lambda|= q$ sets $C_1,C_2,\ldots,C_q$ such that for each $i$ and each vertex $v$ of $G$, $|L(v) \cap C_i| \ge k_i$. We say $G$ is \emph{$\lambda$-choosable} if $G$ is $L$-colourable for any $\lambda$-list assignment $L$ of $G$. The concept of $\lambda$-choosability is a refinement of choosability that puts $k$-choosability and $k$-colourability in the same framework. If $|\lambda|$ is close to $k_\lambda$, then $\lambda$-choosability is close to $k_\lambda$-colourability; if $|\lambda|$ is close to $1$, then $\lambda$-choosability is close to $k_\lambda$-choosability. This paper studies Hadwiger's Conjecture in the context of $\lambda$-choosability. Hadwiger's Conjecture is equivalent to saying that every $K_t$-minor-free graph is $\{1 \star (t-1)\}$-choosable for any positive integer $t$. We prove that for $t \ge 5$, for any partition $\lambda$ of $t-1$ other than $\{1 \star (t-1)\}$, there is a $K_t$-minor-free graph $G$ that is not $\lambda$-choosable. We then construct several types of $K_t$-minor-free graphs that are not $\lambda$-choosable, where $k_\lambda - (t-1)$ gets larger as $k_\lambda-|\lambda|$ gets larger. In partcular, for any $q$ and any $\epsilon > 0$, there exists $t_0$ such that for any $t \ge t_0$, for any partition $\lambda$ of $\lfloor (2-\epsilon)t \rfloor$ with $|\lambda| =q$, there is a $K_t$-minor-free graph that is not $\lambda$-choosable. The $q=1$ case of this result was recently proved by Steiner, and our proof uses a similar argument. We also generalize this result to $(a,b)$-list colouring.

We investigate the product structure of hereditary graph classes admitting strongly sublinear separators. We characterise such classes as subgraphs of the strong product of a star and a complete graph of strongly sublinear size. In a more precise result, we show that if any hereditary graph class $\mathcal{G}$ admits $O(n^{1-\epsilon})$ separators, then for any fixed $\delta\in(0,\epsilon)$ every $n$-vertex graph in $\mathcal{G}$ is a subgraph of the strong product of a graph $H$ with bounded tree-depth and a complete graph of size $O(n^{1-\epsilon+\delta})$. This result holds with $\delta=0$ if we allow $H$ to have tree-depth $O(\log\log n)$. Moreover, using extensions of classical isoperimetric inequalties for grids graphs, we show the dependence on $\delta$ in our results and the above $\text{td}(H)\in O(\log\log n)$ bound are both best possible. We prove that $n$-vertex graphs of bounded treewidth are subgraphs of the product of a graph with tree-depth $t$ and a complete graph of size $O(n^{1/t})$, which is best possible. Finally, we investigate the conjecture that for any hereditary graph class $\mathcal{G}$ that admits $O(n^{1-\epsilon})$ separators, every $n$-vertex graph in $\mathcal{G}$ is a subgraph of the strong product of a graph $H$ with bounded tree-width and a complete graph of size $O(n^{1-\epsilon})$. We prove that the vertices of every $(r + 1)$-uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $\Delta$ may be coloured with $c(\frac{\Delta}{d + 1})^{1/r}$ colours such that each vertex is in at most $d$ monochromatic edges. We determine which properties of 2-layer drawings characterise bipartite graphs of bounded pathwidth.

We show that many graphs with bounded treewidth can be described as subgraphs of the strong product of a graph with smaller treewidth and a bounded-size complete graph. To this end, define the "underlying treewidth" of a graph class $\mathcal{G}$ to be the minimum non-negative integer $c$ such that, for some function $f$, for every graph ${G \in \mathcal{G}}$ there is a graph $H$ with ${\text{tw}(H) \leq c}$ such that $G$ is isomorphic to a subgraph of ${H \boxtimes K_{f(\text{tw}(G))}}$. We introduce disjointed coverings of graphs and show they determine the underlying treewidth of any graph class. Using this result, we prove that the class of planar graphs has underlying treewidth 3; the class of $K_{s,t}$-minor-free graphs has underlying treewidth $s$ (for ${t \geq \max\{s,3\}}$); and the class of $K_t$-minor-free graphs has underlying treewidth ${t-2}$. In general, we prove that a monotone class has bounded underlying treewidth if and only if it excludes some fixed topological minor. We also study the underlying treewidth of graph classes defined by an excluded subgraph or excluded induced subgraph. We show that the class of graphs with no $H$ subgraph has bounded underlying treewidth if and only if every component of $H$ is a subdivided star, and that the class of graphs with no induced $H$ subgraph has bounded underlying treewidth if and only if every component of $H$ is a star.

Recent results show that several important graph classes can be embedded as subgraphs of strong products of simpler graphs classes (paths, small cliques, or graphs of bounded treewidth). This paper develops general techniques to bound the chromatic number (and its popular variants, such as fractional, clustered, or defective chromatic number) of the strong product of general graphs with simpler graphs classes, such as paths, and more generally graphs of bounded treewidth. A squaregraph is a plane graph in which each internal face is a $4$-cycle and each internal vertex has degree at least 4. This paper proves that every squaregraph is isomorphic to a subgraph of the semi-strong product of an outerplanar graph and a path. We generalise this result for infinite squaregraphs, and show that this is best possible in the sense that "outerplanar graph" cannot be replaced by "forest".

In a reduction sequence of a graph, vertices are successively identified until the graph has one vertex. At each step, when identifying $u$ and $v$, each edge incident to exactly one of $u$ and $v$ is coloured red. Bonnet, Kim, Thomass\'e and Watrigant [J. ACM 2022] defined the twin-width of a graph $G$ to be the minimum integer $k$ such that there is a reduction sequence of $G$ in which every red graph has maximum degree at most $k$. For any graph parameter $f$, we define the reduced $f$ of a graph $G$ to be the minimum integer $k$ such that there is a reduction sequence of $G$ in which every red graph has $f$ at most $k$. Our focus is on graph classes with bounded reduced bandwidth, which implies and is stronger than bounded twin-width (reduced maximum degree). We show that every proper minor-closed class has bounded reduced bandwidth, which is qualitatively stronger than an analogous result of Bonnet et al.\ for bounded twin-width. In many instances, we also make quantitative improvements. For example, all previous upper bounds on the twin-width of planar graphs were at least $2^{1000}$. We show that planar graphs have reduced bandwidth at most $466$ and twin-width at most $583$. Our bounds for graphs of Euler genus $\gamma$ are $O(\gamma)$. Lastly, we show that fixed powers of graphs in a proper minor-closed class have bounded reduced bandwidth (irrespective of the degree of the vertices). In particular, we show that map graphs of Euler genus $\gamma$ have reduced bandwidth $O(\gamma^4)$. Lastly, we separate twin-width and reduced bandwidth by showing that any infinite class of expanders excluding a fixed complete bipartite subgraph has unbounded reduced bandwidth, while there are bounded-degree expanders with twin-width at most 6., Comment: 35 pages, 4 figures

We prove that the stack-number of the strong product of three $n$-vertex paths is $\Theta(n^{1/3})$. The best previously known upper bound was $O(n)$. No non-trivial lower bound was known. This is the first explicit example of a graph family with bounded maximum degree and unbounded stack-number. The main tool used in our proof of the lower bound is the topological overlap theorem of Gromov. We actually prove a stronger result in terms of so-called triangulations of Cartesian products. We conclude that triangulations of three-dimensional Cartesian products of any sufficiently large connected graphs have large stack-number. The upper bound is a special case of a more general construction based on families of permutations derived from Hadamard matrices. The strong product of three paths is also the first example of a bounded degree graph with bounded queue-number and unbounded stack-number. A natural question that follows from our result is to determine the smallest $\Delta_0$ such that there exist a graph family with unbounded stack-number, bounded queue-number and maximum degree $\Delta_0$. We show that $\Delta_0\in \{6,7\}$.

Dujmovi\'c, Joret, Micek, Morin, Ueckerdt and Wood [J. ACM 2020] proved that for every graph $G$ with Euler genus $g$ there is a graph $H$ with treewidth at most 4 and a path $P$ such that $G\subseteq H \boxtimes P \boxtimes K_{\max\{2g,3\}}$. We improve this result by replacing "4" by "3" and with $H$ planar. We in fact prove a more general result in terms of so-called framed graphs. This implies that every $(g,d)$-map graph is contained in $ H \boxtimes P\boxtimes K_\ell$, for some planar graph $H$ with treewidth $3$, where $\ell=\max\{2g\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor,d+3\lfloor\frac{d}{2}\rfloor-3\}$. It also implies that every $(g,1)$-planar graph (that is, graphs that can be drawn in a surface of Euler genus $g$ with at most one crossing per edge) is contained in $H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_{\max\{4g,7\}}$, for some planar graph $H$ with treewidth $3$.

The planar graph product structure theorem of Dujmovi\'{c}, Joret, Micek, Morin, Ueckerdt, and Wood [J. ACM 2020] states that every planar graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a graph with bounded treewidth and a path. This result has been the key tool to resolve important open problems regarding queue layouts, nonrepetitive colourings, centered colourings, and adjacency labelling schemes. In this paper, we extend this line of research by utilizing shallow minors to prove analogous product structure theorems for several beyond planar graph classes. The key observation that drives our work is that many beyond planar graphs can be described as a shallow minor of the strong product of a planar graph with a small complete graph. In particular, we show that powers of planar graphs, $k$-planar, $(k,p)$-cluster planar, fan-planar and $k$-fan-bundle planar graphs have such a shallow-minor structure. Using a combination of old and new results, we deduce that these classes have bounded queue-number, bounded nonrepetitive chromatic number, polynomial $p$-centred chromatic numbers, linear strong colouring numbers, and cubic weak colouring numbers. In addition, we show that $k$-gap planar graphs have at least exponential local treewidth and, as a consequence, cannot be described as a subgraph of the strong product of a graph with bounded treewidth and a path.

Dujmovi\'{c}, Joret, Micek, Morin, Ueckerdt, and Wood [J. ACM 2020] established that every planar graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a graph with bounded treewidth and a path. Motivated by this result, this paper systematically studies various structural properties of cartesian, direct and strong products. In particular, we characterise when these graph products contain a given complete multipartite subgraph, determine tight bounds for their degeneracy, establish new lower bounds for the treewidth of cartesian and strong products, and characterise when they have bounded treewidth and when they have bounded pathwidth.

Stanislaw Ulam asked whether there exists a universal countable planar graph (that is, a countable planar graph that contains every countable planar graph as a subgraph). J\'anos Pach (1981) answered this question in the negative. We strengthen this result by showing that every countable graph that contains all countable planar graphs must contain (i) an infinite complete graph as a minor, and (ii) a subdivision of the complete graph $K_t$ with multiplicity $t$, for every finite $t$. On the other hand, we construct a countable graph that contains all countable planar graphs and has several key properties such as linear colouring numbers, linear expansion, and every finite $n$-vertex subgraph has a balanced separator of size $O(\sqrt{n})$. The graph is $\mathcal{T}_6\boxtimes P_{\!\infty}$, where $\mathcal{T}_k$ is the universal treewidth-$k$ countable graph (which we define explicitly), $P_{\!\infty}$ is the 1-way infinite path, and $\boxtimes$ denotes the strong product. More generally, for every positive integer $t$ we construct a countable graph that contains every countable $K_t$-minor-free graph and has the above key properties. Our final contribution is a construction of a countable graph that contains every countable $K_t$-minor-free graph as an induced subgraph, has linear colouring numbers and linear expansion, and contains no subdivision of the countably infinite complete graph (implying (ii) above is best possible).

Dujmovi\'c, Joret, Micek, Morin, Ueckerdt and Wood [J. ACM 2020] proved that for every planar graph $G$ there is a graph $H$ with treewidth at most 8 and a path $P$ such that $G\subseteq H\boxtimes P$. The "extremal function" $c(H)$ of a graph $H$ is the supremum of densities of graphs not containing $H$ as a minor, where the "density" of a graph $G$ is the ratio of the number of edges to the number of vertices. Myers and Thomason (2005), Norin, Reed, Thomason and Wood (2020), and Thomason and Wales (2019) determined the asymptotic behaviour of $c(H)$ for all polynomially dense graphs $H$, as well as almost all graphs $H$ of constant density. We explore the asymptotic behavior of the extremal function in the regime not covered by the above results, where in addition to having constant density the graph $H$ is in a graph class admitting strongly sublinear separators. We establish asymptotically tight bounds in many cases. For example, we prove that for every planar graph $H$, $$c(H) = (1+o(1))\cdot\max\left\{\frac{|V(H)|}{2},|V(H)| - \alpha (H)\right\},$$ extending recent results of Haslegrave, Kim and Liu (2020). We also show that an asymptotically tight bound on the extremal function of graphs in minor-closed families proposed by Haslegrave, Kim and Liu (2020) is equivalent to a well studied open weakening of Hadwiger's conjecture.

Let $G$ be a connected $n$-vertex graph in a proper minor-closed class $\mathcal G$. We prove that the extension complexity of the spanning tree polytope of $G$ is $O(n^{3/2})$. This improves on the $O(n^2)$ bounds following from the work of Wong (1980) and Martin (1991). It also extends a result of Fiorini, Huynh, Joret, and Pashkovich (2017), who obtained a $O(n^{3/2})$ bound for graphs embedded in a fixed surface. Our proof works more generally for all graph classes admitting strongly sublinear balanced separators: We prove that for every constant $\beta$ with $0<\beta<1$, if $\mathcal G$ is a graph class closed under induced subgraphs such that all $n$-vertex graphs in $\mathcal G$ have balanced separators of size $O(n^\beta)$, then the extension complexity of the spanning tree polytope of every connected $n$-vertex graph in $\mathcal{G}$ is $O(n^{1+\beta})$. We in fact give two proofs of this result, one is a direct construction of the extended formulation, the other is via communication protocols. This paper establishes sufficient conditions that force a graph to contain a bipartite subgraph with a given structural property. In particular, let $\beta$ be any of the following graph parameters: Hadwiger number, Haj\'{o}s number, treewidth, pathwidth, and treedepth. Layered treewidth and row treewidth are recently introduced graph parameters that have been key ingredients in the solution of several well-known open problems. It follows from the definitions that the layered treewidth of a graph is at most its row treewidth plus 1. Moreover, a minor-closed class has bounded layered treewidth if and only if it has bounded row treewidth. However, it has been open whether row treewidth is bounded by a function of layered treewidth. This paper answers this question in the negative. In particular, for every integer $k$ we describe a graph with layered treewidth 1 and row treewidth $k$. We also prove an analogous result for layered pathwidth and row pathwidth.

This paper shows that $K_t$-minor-free (and $K_{s, t}$-minor-free) graphs $G$ are subgraphs of products of a tree-like graph $H$ (of bounded treewidth) and a complete graph $K_m$. Our results include optimal bounds on the treewidth of $H$ and optimal bounds (to within a constant factor) on $m$ in terms of the number of vertices of $G$ and the treewidth of $G$. These results follow from a more general theorem whose corollaries include a strengthening of the celebrated separator theorem of Alon, Seymour, and Thomas [J. Amer. Math. Soc. 1990] and the Planar Graph Product Structure Theorem of Dujmovi\'c et al. [J. ACM 2020]., Comment: Main results are not in v1. We answer three questions posed by Bubeck and Linial on the limit densities of subtrees in trees. We prove there exist positive $\varepsilon_1$ and $\varepsilon_2$ such that every tree that is neither a path nor a star has inducibility at most $1-\varepsilon_1$, where the inducibility of a tree $T$ is defined as the maximum limit density of $T$, and that there are infinitely many trees with inducibility at least $\varepsilon_2$. Finally, we construct a universal sequence of trees; that is, a sequence in which the limit density of any tree is positive., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures

The "clustered chromatic number" of a class of graphs is the minimum integer $k$ such that for some integer $c$ every graph in the class is $k$-colourable with monochromatic components of size at most $c$. We determine the clustered chromatic number of any minor-closed class with bounded treedepth, and prove a best possible upper bound on the clustered chromatic number of any minor-closed class with bounded pathwidth. As a consequence, we determine the fractional clustered chromatic number of every minor-closed class.
