Abstract

We formulate the question of the Lorentz violation in 6 and 10 dimensions to obtain the bosonic sectors of $N=2-$ and $N=4-$ supersymmetries, respectively. 6. Off-Shell Extended Supersymmetries and Lorentz-Violating Abelian Gauge Models

Abstract

In this work, we propose the N=2 and N=4 supersymmetric extensions realized off-shell of the Abelian gauge model with Chern-Simons Lorentz-breaking term. We start with the theory in 6 and 10 dimensions and reduce \`{a} la Scherk the space-like coordinates to carry out the D=5 model in both cases. Then, we reduce the fifth space-like coordinate using the Legendre transformation technique for dimensional reduction. The last reduction method provides us with auxiliary fields that yield the superalgebra closed off-shell. Since the reduced bosonic Lagrangians from $6D$ and $10D$ are the same as the N=2 and N=4 SUSY-versions of the theory, respectively, we use the superspace-superfield formalism in N=1 to achieve the supersymmetric version of model., Comment: pages 17

Abstract

In this work, we discuss the interaction between anti-symmetric rank-two tensor matter and topological Yang-Mills fields. The matter field considered here is the rank-2 Avdeev-Chizhov tensor matter field in a suitably extended $N_{T}=2$ SUSY. We start off from the $N_{T}=2$, D=4 superspace formulation and we go over to Riemannian manifolds. The matter field is coupled to the topological Yang-Mills field. Abstract

(BJOG. 2023;130(10):1269–1274)The physiological changes that occur in pregnancy have been associated with new onset and recurrent cardiac arrhythmias. It is common for pregnant patients to experience palpitations in pregnancy, and most of these do not require treatment. However, some arrhythmias require treatment including medications and/or direct current cardioversion (DCCV) to restore the patient’s rhythm. In a recent inquiry into maternal deaths in the United Kingdom (UK), DCCV was not applied consistently and may have resulted in maternal deaths. This study aimed to understand practice surrounding DCCV in the UK, assessing which arrhythmias occurred and how they were treated. In addition, they evaluated outcomes associated with obstetric and neonatal health, including the use of fetal monitoring and whether there were cases where DCCV caused harm to the fetus.

Abstract

Introduction: Due to the improved survival in individuals with congenital heart disease (CHD), considering their reproductive health has become more important. Currently, this topic is still underexplored. Areas covered: We discuss fertility, sexuality, assisted reproductive technology (ART), and contraception in adults with CHD. Expert opinion: Timely counseling regarding fertility, sexuality, pregnancy, and contraception is necessary, preferably during teenage years. Due to a lack of data, whether or not to perform ART in adults with CHD is almost always based on expert opinion and follow-up in an expert center is recommended. Future research is necessary to fill the gaps in knowledge on the risks and frequency of complications of ART in adults with CHD, but also to be able to differentiate the relative risks in the different types of CHD. Only then will we be able to counsel adults with CHD correctly and not unjustly deprive someone of a chance of pregnancy.

Abstract

The metal concentrations in water, sediments and mollusks (Tagelus plebeius) of the Manguaba Lagoon and the influence of humic substances from water and sediments in the distribution of these metals were investigated in this work. The mean metal concentrations in water were: Mg (89.0 ± 0.11), Ca (32.0 ± 0.10), Fe (0.97 ± 0.02), Mn (0.52 ± 0.01), Zn (0.33 ± 0.10) and Pb (0.22 ± 0.02) mg L-1. The Pb concentrations were above the Brazilian legislation limit. All sediment data were below maximum limit established by the National Council for the Environment (CONAMA, Brazil) of the Ministry of the Environment, and the concentration ranges for metals were: Fe (1199-60000), Mg (339-8870), Ca (461-3838), Cr (< LOQ-39.5) and Pb (< LOQ-12.5) mg kg-1 (LOQ: limit of quantification). None of the principal contaminants (Cr, Pb and Cd) was determined in Tagelus plebeius, being a positive fact once the population nearby Manguaba Lagoon consumes large amounts of this mollusk. According to the results, the influence of humic substances in the contaminant retention is evident as they become unavailable for absorption by mollusks of Manguaba Lagoon.

Abstract

Double orifice mitral valve (DOMV) is an uncommon anomaly of surgical importance characterized by a mitral valve with a single fibrous annulus with two orifices opening into the left ventricle (LV). Subvalvular structures, especially the tensor apparatus, invariably show various degrees of abnormality. Associated congenital heart defects are common, though DOMV can occur as an isolated anomaly. Two-dimensional echocardiography is useful for diagnosis but combining it with real-time three-dimensional echocardiography helps in a more detailed evaluation of mitral valve and subvalvular structures as is shown in this case description.

Abstract

In many species, the offspring of related parents suffer reduced reproductive success, a phenomenon known as inbreeding depression. In humans, the importance of this effect has remained unclear, partly because reproduction between close relatives is both rare and frequently associated with confounding social factors. Here, using genomic inbreeding coefficients (FROH) for >1.4 million individuals, we show that FROH is significantly associated (p < 0.0005) with apparently deleterious changes in 32 out of 100 traits analysed. These changes are associated with runs of homozygosity (ROH), but not with common variant homozygosity, suggesting that genetic variants associated with inbreeding depression are predominantly rare. The effect on fertility is striking: FROH equivalent to the offspring of first cousins is associated with a 55% decrease [95% CI 44–66%] in the odds of having children. Finally, the effects of FROH are confirmed within full-sibling pairs, where the variation in FROH is independent of all environmental confounding.

© Rogers‑Broadway et al. Endometriosis is a well-known risk factor for ovarian cancer. The genetic changes that characterise endometriosis are poorly understood; however, the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is involved. In this study, we investigated the expression of key mTOR components in endometriosis and the effects of rapalogues using an endometrioid ovarian carcinoma cell line (MdAH 2774) as an in vitro model. Gene expression of mTOR, dEPTOR, Rictor and Raptor was assessed by qPcR in 24 endometriosis patients and in silico in ovarian cancer patients. Furthermore, the effects of Rapamycin, Everolimus, deforolimus, Temsirolimus, Resveratrol, and BEZ235 (dactolisib, a dual kinase inhibitor) on mTOR signalling components was assessed. mTOR showed a significant increase in the expression in endometriosis and ovarian endometrioid adenocarcinoma patients compared to non-affected controls. dEPTOR, an inhibitor of mTOR, was downregulated in the advanced stages of ovarian cancer (III and IV) compared to earlier stages (I and II). Treatment of MdAH-2774 cells with the mTOR inhibitors resulted in the significant upregulation of dEPTOR mRNA, whereas treatment with rapamycin and BEZ-235 (100 nM) resulted in downregulation of the mTOR protein expression after 48 h of treatment. None of the treat ments resulted in translocation of mTOR from cytoplasm to nucleus. Upregulation of dEPTOR is a positive prognostic marker in ovarian cancer and is increased in response to mTOR pathway inhibition suggesting that it functions as a tumour suppressor gene in endometrioid ovarian carcinoma. collectively, our data suggest the mTOR pathway as a potential connection between endometriosis and ovarian cancer and may be a potential target in the treatment of both conditions.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Patients with systolic heart failure and anemia have worse symptoms, functional capacity, and outcomes than those without anemia. We evaluated the effects of darbepoetin alfa on clinical outcomes in patients with systolic heart failure and anemia. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind trial, we assigned 2278 patients with systolic heart failure and mild-to-moderate anemia (hemoglobin level, 9.0 to 12.0 g per deciliter) to receive either darbepoetin alfa (to achieve a hemoglobin target of 13 g per deciliter) or placebo. The primary outcome was a composite of death from any cause or hospitalization for worsening heart failure. RESULTS: The primary outcome occurred in 576 of 1136 patients (50.7%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 565 of 1142 patients (49.5%) in the placebo group (hazard ratio in the darbepoetin alfa group, 1.01; 95% confidence interval, 0.90 to 1.13; P=0.87). There was no significant between-group difference in any of the secondary outcomes. The neutral effect of darbepoetin alfa was consistent across all prespecified subgroups. Fatal or nonfatal stroke occurred in 42 patients (3.7%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 31 patients (2.7%) in the placebo group (P=0.23). Thromboembolic adverse events were reported in 153 patients (13.5%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 114 patients (10.0%) in the placebo group (P=0.01). Cancer-related adverse events were similar in the two study groups. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with darbepoetin alfa did not improve clinical outcomes in patients with systolic heart failure and mild-to-moderate anemia. Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected human life significantly. In spite of significant advancement of medical technology, management is still focused on preventive strategies due to non availability of vaccine or any definitive treatment. The preventive strategies include hand hygiene, social distancing, isolation/quarantine along with the methods for boosting immunity. The ancient literature and several traditional practices of our country guide a hygienic life style and address several preventive aspects of transmission of infection across the society. Furthermore, healthy eating habits and use of various herbs and spices as regular food ingredients has been proven for boosting the immunity. Healthcare workers (HCW's) are at increased risk of corona virus disease (COVID-19) infection during aerosol generating activities. The aerosol box has been used during intubation and extubation to prevent transmission of infection to HCWs. Isolation room with negative pressure has been advocated for COVID-19 patients. Abstract

Tuning of electric drive speed controllers is complicated by nonlinearities. Usual practice obtains controller settings with conventional linear analysis methods and then tunes the settings using trial-and-error methods during commissioning. An alternative approach, using genetic algorithms for the online tuning, is proved experimentally to optimize the drive's response efficiently. Abstract

This work presents an analysis of the line current harmonic currents created by the three-phase induction motor fed by a frequency inverter under the eyes of the IEEE Standard 519-92. In order to obtain the line current waveform at the supply side, a MATLAB/SIMULINK model of the whole system was developed. Aiming to validate the developed model, simulation results are presented and compared to the experimental ones. In addition to this, an analysis of the supply side line current harmonics was carried out. The results reveal that the Total Harmonic Distortion levels are above the limits established by the IEEE 519-92 Standard.
