The investigation into the impact of small molecular in coal on its wettability holds significant importance in the field of coal dust control. In this study, eight coal structure models with different small molecules were constructed to analyze the effects of small molecules on the adsorption of H2O in coal, the impact on pore structure, and the interactions between small molecules and H2O. The research results indicate that Toluene and C15H32 had a promoting effect on coal wetting properties, mainly through their interactions with H2O to enhance the wetting characteristics of coal. However, dihydrofuran-2(3 H)-one had an inhibitory effect on coal wetting properties, mainly by altering the pore structure of coal to suppress the adsorption of H2O. The strength of interactions between the three small molecular and H2O was ranked from high to low as follows: dihydrofuran-2(3 H)-one > Toluene > C15H32. There was charge transfer between the three small molecular and H2O, with the amount of transferred charge ranked from large to small as follows: dihydrofuran-2(3 H)-one > Toluene > C15H32. • An end face pressure distribution model is proposed for twin screw expanders. • Errors are within 7.0% between the simulation and experimental results. • A parametric study is carried out for labyrinth seal structure parameters. • The clearance on the rotor end face has the greatest influence on shaft seal leakage. • There exists an optimal depth-to-width ratio of about 0.13. Pressure distribution on the end face of screw expanders is the primary premise for calculating shaft seal leakage and axial force. Different from other types of expanders, pressure distribution on the screw expander end face is not only affected by operating conditions but also closely related to rotor geometric parameters. To illustrate the leakage characteristics of shaft seal in screw expanders, a non-uniform pressure distribution model on the end face was proposed, and a thermodynamic leakage model in the shaft seal was established. Labyrinth seal, the most widely used sealing assembly, was taken as an example to study the effects of shaft seal parameters on leakage. The influence of four main parameters, namely tooth tip clearance, cavity depth, cavity width, and clearance on the rotor end face, on the leakage of the shaft seal was studied. The results show that pressure on the screw expander end face is non-uniformly distributed, and the average pressure is far less than the highest operating pressure. Moreover, the leakage through the shaft seal rises rapidly with the increase of end face clearance and tooth tip clearance, and a 0.1 mm increment of them can lead to increased leakage up to 108.6% and 52.5%, respectively. And the leakage drops with the increment of cavity width. There is an optimal depth-to-width ratio of about 0.13 for minimum leakage. The wavelength modulation‐active laser heterodyne spectroscopy (WM‐ALHS), which introduces wavelength modulation technique into active laser heterodyne spectroscopy, is reported to enhance the gas standoff detection capability of weak return optical power. The ALHS gas standoff detection system is developed using a 1.65 μm butterfly packaged distributed feedback laser with tail fiber and an all‐fiber structure, which successfully detects methane concentrations at a distance of 35 cm using an aluminum plate as the reflective surface. Allan variance analysis shows that the system has good stability, and the detection limit at 29.2 s integration time is 0.84 ppm m. Standoff detection experiments with direct absorption‐active laser heterodyne spectroscopy (DA‐ALHS) and wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) are carried out on the basis of the WM‐ALHS system and the detection limits of 4.49 and 1.64 ppm m were achieved within integration times of 18.6 and 29 s for DA‐ALHS and WMS, respectively. The superiority of the WM‐ALHS method compared to these two spectral detection methods is demonstrated. Background: Sarm1 (Sterile alpha and TIR motif-containing 1) is a key protein that regulates neurodegenerative pathologies. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is highly associated with neurodegenerative lesions and biorhythmic disturbances. Objective: This study aims to decipher the role of Sarm1 in AD-induced circadian rhythm disturbances and AD progression. Methods: Open field and water maze tests were used to assess the cognitive function of mice. Thioflavin-S staining was used to assess amyloid-β (Aβ) plaque deposition in the hippocampus and cortex. Rhythmic waveform of home cage activity and temperature was recorded to evaluate circadian rhythm. Expression of clock molecules including Bmal1 and Per2 in the hippocampus were analyzed using western blot and real-time PCR. Further, HT22 cells with Sam1 knockout were treated with Aβ31–35 treatment to initiate circadian rhythm disorder in the cellular level to assess the changes in Bmal1 and Per2. Results: Our data suggested that Sarm1 deficiency rescued cognitive disorder, decreased Aβ plaque deposition in the hippocampus and cortex, inhibited astrocyte activation, improved circadian rhythm, altered clock molecule expression in the cortex and hippocampus in APP/PS1 mice. Conclusion: Sarm1 attenuates circadian rhythm disturbances and reduces AD progression. Sensitive H2 sensors at low concentrations and room temperature are desired for the early warning and control of hydrogen leakage. In this paper, a resistive sensor based on Pt-doped In2O3 nanoparticles was fabricated using inkjet printing process. The H2 sensing performance of the sensor was evaluated at low concentrations below 1% at room temperature. It exhibited a relative high response of 42.34% to 0.6% H2. As the relative humidity of 0.5% H2 decreased from 34% to 23%, the response decreased slightly from 34% to 23%. The sensing principle and the humidity effect were discussed. A dynamic current sensing model for dry H2 detection was proposed based on Wolkenstein theory and experimentally verified to be able to predict the sensing behavior of the sensor. The H2 concentration can be calculated within a short measurement time using the model without waiting for the saturation of the response, which significantly reduces the sensing and recovery time of the sensor. The sensor is expected to be a promising candidate for room-temperature H2 detection, and the proposed model could be very helpful in promoting the application of the sensor for real-time H2 leakage monitoring. Yb:CaYAlO 4 (Yb:CALYO) shaped crystal fibers with different Yb3+ doping concentration were successfully grown by the micro-pulling-down (μ -PD) method. The effect of the Yb3+ concentration on the structure, absorption, emission and lifetime was systematically studied. The strongest absorption peaks of Yb:CALYO crystal fibers are located at 977 nm for σ and π polarization. The micro-photoluminescence indicate that Yb3+ ions in CALYO single crystal fiber grown by the μ -PD method distributed evenly across a cross-section. The emission cross-section of 5 at.% Yb:CALYO crystal fiber was calculated to be 0.86 × 10−20 and 1.08 × 10−20 cm2 at 983 nm for σ and π polarizations. Benefited from the disordered structrure of CaYAlO 4 crystal, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) at 978 nm was 68.9 nm and 80.9 nm, respectively. The fluorescence lifetime of 2F 5/2 energy level of Yb:CALYO crystal fibers with concentration of 0.5 at.%, 1 at.%, 2 at.% and 5 at.% was calculated to be 435 μs, 484 μs, 514 μs and 453 μs, respectively. The diverse pore structures in coal are pivotal in coalbed methane storage and transportation, making it highly significant to explore methane adsorption characteristics across varying pore sizes for effective prevention and control of coal mine gas disasters. Using the proposed graphene nanotube filling method, eight coal molecule models with varying pore size ratios were constructed, including four different pore radii: 0.35 nm, 0.55 nm, 0.75 nm, and 2 nm. Methane adsorption amount, methane density, and methane concentration distribution were obtained through Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation methods. The research results show that coal consisting of multiple pore sizes had a better methane adsorption capacity than a single pore size. Combining pore sizes of 0.35 nm, 0.55 nm, and 0.75 nm in a 1:2:1 ratio resulted in the highest excess methane adsorption capacity in coal, reaching 5.623 mmol/g. The single pore size of 0.55 nm in coal had the lowest excess adsorption amount of methane, which was 2.236 mmol/g. The presence of mesopores weakened the methane adsorption capacity of coal, and this weakening effect increased with the increase of mesopore proportion. In the model composed of single pore size micropores, the methane concentration inside the pores was uniformly distributed. The coexistence of multiple micropores may lead to methane filling in the micropores in a monolayer adsorption form. The coexistence of micropores and mesopores does not alter methane filling in the micropores and monolayer adsorption in the mesopores. Due to safety problems caused by the use of organic electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries and the high production cost brought by the limited lithium resources, water-based zinc-ion batteries have become a new research focus in the field of energy storage due to their low production cost, safety, efficiency, and environmental friendliness. This paper focused on vanadium dioxide and expanded graphite (EG) composite cathode materials. Given the cycling problem caused by the structural fragility of vanadium dioxide in zinc-ion batteries, the feasibility of preparing a new composite material is explored. The EG/VO2 composites were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method, and compared with the aqueous zinc-ion batteries assembled with a single type of VO2 under the same conditions, the electrode materials composited with high-purity sulfur-free expanded graphite showed more excellent capacity, cycling performance, and multiplicity performance, and the EG/VO2 composites possessed a high discharge ratio of 345 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, and the Coulombic efficiency was close to 100%. The EG/VO2 composite has a high specific discharge capacity of 345 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 with a Coulombic efficiency close to 100%, a capacity retention of 77% after 100 cycles, and 277.8 mAh g−1 with a capacity retention of 78% at a 20-fold increase in current density. The long cycle test data demonstrated that the composite with expanded graphite effectively improved the cycling performance of vanadium-based materials, and the composite maintained a stable Coulombic efficiency of 100% at a high current density of 2 A/g and still maintained a specific capacity of 108.9 mAh/g after 2000 cycles. This study adopts a data-driven methodology to address the challenge of garment fitting for individuals with diverse body shapes. Focusing on young Chinese women aged 18–25 from Central China, we utilized the German VITUS SMART LC3 3D body scanning technology to measure 62 body parts pertinent to fashion design on a sample of 220 individuals. We then employed a hybrid approach, integrating the circumference difference classification method with the characteristic value classification method, and applied the K-means clustering algorithm to categorize these individuals into four distinct body shape groups based on cluster center analysis. Building upon these findings, we formulated specific linear regression models for key body parts associated with each body shape category. This led to the development of an intelligent software capable of automatically calculating the dimensions of 28 body parts and accurately determining the body shape type for young Central Chinese women. Our research underscores the significant role of intelligent predictive systems in the realm of fashion design, particularly within a data-driven framework. The system we have developed offers precise body measurements and classification outcomes, empowering businesses to create garments that more accurately conform to the wearer's body, thus enhancing both the fit and aesthetic value of the clothing. A standoff methane (CH4) sensor with actual hard topographic targets (usually called non-cooperative targets) is essential for natural gas pipeline leakage inspection and many other practical applications. To address this requirement, a miniaturized and low-power-consumption gas sensor was developed based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy for standoff CH4 detection with a non-cooperative target. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy with a 1 f normalized 2 f detection method was employed for calibration-free CH4 measurement. A Kalman filter algorithm was used to improve the precision of the detection. The performance of the standoff CH4 sensor was evaluated comprehensively under various conditions, including different incident angles, different hard topographic targets, and different standoff distances. The results show that the measurement precision is 0.107% and the sensitivity is 4.08 parts per million per meter (ppm·m) with a time resolution of 1 s and a standoff distance of 40 m. The detection limit can achieve 1.24 ppm·m at an optimal integration time of 70 s. Left ventricular (LV) diastolic function was found to be a significant predictor of cardiovascular events and general mortality in dialysis. Studies have indicated that dialysate calcium concentrations were significantly associated with cardiac function. However, the relationship between low calcium dialysate and LV diastolic function has not been clear. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of low calcium dialysate on cardiac function in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. A total of 60 PD patients were enrolled in this study, with a calcium content of the PD solution of 1.25 mmol/L in 30 patients (low-calcium group) and 1.75 mmol/L in 30 patients (standard-calcium group). Standard M-mode and two-dimensional ultrasound measurements were applied to detect the cardiac function. After 12-month follow-up, we found no significant difference in blood pressure, calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone (PTH), etc., between the two groups. Residual renal function (RRF), which is associated with LV cardiac function, was significantly decreased in the standard-calcium group compared with the low-calcium group (5.64 ± 3.23 vs. 9.38 ± 3.17,p = .001). Compared with the low-calcium group,Emax(peak early diastolic velocity) andAmax(peak late diastolic velocity) were significantly decreased (p < .05), whereas myocardial performance index (MPI) was obviously increased in standard-calcium group (9.69 ± 2.71 vs. 7.75 ± 0.93,p < .05). Context: Podocyte injury is related to increasing proteinuria and contributes to the progression of kidney disease. Calcineurin binding protein 1 (Cabin1) is a repressor of myocyte enhancer factor 2 (MEF2) and calcineurin-mediated transcription in the immune system. Moreover, Cabin1 interacts with p53 and negatively regulates p53 in tumor cells. However, its function in kidney is unknown.Objective: To explore the exact localization of Cabin1 in glomeruli, as well as the relationship between Cabin1 and podocyte injury.Methods: Sprague–Dawley rats were sacrificed to observe the localization and protein expression of Cabin1 in the kidney. Cabin1 localization and protein expression were detected by immunofluorescence staining and western blot, respectively. Mouse podocytes were cultivated at 33 °C to propagate, then cells were transferred to an incubator at 37 °C to allow differentiation. Differentiated podocytes were stimulated by angiotensin II (AngII) or AngII plus tacrolimus. Cells were harvested to detect the localization and protein expression of Cabin1. Cytoplasmic and nuclear protein were separated by protein extraction kit.Results: Cabin1 mainly localized in the nuclei of glomerular innate cells, it colocalized with WT-1 in podocytes nuclei. Western bolt showed Cabin1 protein remarkably expressed in renal cortex. AngII-induced Cabin1 nuclear protein significantly increased, accompanied by cytoskeleton disruption in cultured mouse podocytes.Conclusion: Cabin1 localizes in glomerular podocytes. Abstract: A year-long field study on the seasonal characteristics of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was conducted at the Qilian Shan Station of Glaciology and Ecologic Environment (QSS), a remote site on the northeast edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The PM2.5 samples were collected weekly using a low volume (16.7L/min) sampler, and then analyzed by ion chromatography for the water soluble ionic species (WSIs). The annual average mass loading of PM2.5, retrieved from co-located measurement on aerosol size distribution, was 9.5±5.4μgm−3 with WSIs accounting for 39±2%. The WSIs were dominated by SO4 2− (39%), CO3 2− (19%), Ca2+ (16%), NO3 − (10%), and NH4 + (6%), suggesting important contributions from both anthropogenic aerosol and mineral dust. The mass loading of total WSIs showed a seasonal variation with higher concentrations in spring (6.3μgm−3) and summer (5.1μgm−3) and lower concentrations in winter (2.2μgm−3) and fall (1.7μgm−3). A linear regression of ammonium versus sulfate by equivalent concentration showed a slope of 0.51, suggesting an excess of acids. The excess sulfuric and nitric acids likely reacted with mineral dust, as evidenced by the tight correlation between [Ca2+ +NH4 +] and [SO4 2− +NO3 −]. The oxidation ratios of nitrogen and sulfur estimated based on the datasets of SO2 and NO2 from the closest air quality station at Jiayuguan (~150km from sampling site) showed that the gas-particle partitioning of nitrogen on dust was more efficient than that of sulfur. The size distribution of SO4 2− showed a dominant accumulation mode, with a mode diameter (D p) ranging from 0.18 to 0.56μm. In comparison, NO3 − and Ca2+ showed a prominent coarse mode with D p ranging from 1 to 10μm. The results of air mass trajectory cluster and potential source contribution function analysis demonstrated that the source regions of the mineral dust were located in the arid areas of northwest China while the anthropogenic aerosol was likely from urban areas in the low elevation areas to the east of QSS. Serum fetuin A has been shown to be associated with the risk of vascular calcification and atherosclerosis, and it can predict the onset of cardiovascular mortality in dialysis patients. The carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is an accessible and reliable method to identify the subclinical atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between dialysate calcium concentrations and fetuin A or cIMT in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Forty patients, newly diagnosed end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and undergoing peritoneal dialysis, were enrolled in the study, with a calcium content of the peritoneal dialysis (PD) solution of 1.25 mmol/L in 20 patients (low-Ca group) and 1.75 mmol/L in 20 patients (standard-Ca group). The patients were followed up for 12 months after the PD conducted. Serum fetuin A was determined using a human fetuin A enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit and cIMT was detected using ultrasonic wave. We observed no difference between two groups with regard to the baseline data of fetuin A, cIMT, calcium, phosphorus, calcium-phosphorus product, high sensitivity CRP (hsCRP), parathyroid hormone (PTH), or lipid parameters. After 12 months follow-up, fetuin A (263.92 ± 16.1 vs. 282.76 ± 21.0, p = 0.017) and calcium-phosphorus product (39.85 ± 7.76 vs. 47.50 ± 6.65, p = 0.009) were obviously lower in the low-Ca group than standard-Ca group, the other serum parameters were not different between these two groups. Compared with baseline data, serum fetuin A concentration significantly reduced in low-Ca group ( p < 0.05). The number of patients with increased cIMT and newly occurring cardiovascular events in the low-Ca group were significantly reduced than standard-Ca group ( p < 0.05). In conclusion, our data suggest that low calcium dialysate treatment is associated with the decreased serum fetuin A concentration and serum calcium-phosphorus product, and it is associated with the reduced number of PD patients with increased cIMT or with newly occurring cardiovascular events. Abstract: The concentration and size distribution of aerosol particles in the range of 0.25–32μm was monitored with an optical particle counter from 2009 to 2011 at the Qilian Shan Station of Glaciology and Ecologic Environment (QSS) (39.50N, 96.51E; 4180m a.s.l.), in the northern Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau. The average total number concentration N was 27cm−3 (1σ =31), with submicrometer particles (N 0.25< d <1μm) accounting for 97%. A clear seasonal variability of N was observed with high values in spring and summer, peaking in April and August, respectively. The peak in April corresponded to the highest frequency of dust storms in northern China, while the peak in August was likely because of polluted air mass transport, as seen from the increased fraction of N 0.25< d <1μm and the increased concentration of black carbon. The N also exhibited an evidently diurnal pattern depending on seasons. The cold seasons (winter and spring) presented a bimodal structure with one peak in the morning and another in early evening, while only one early evening peak was seen in the warm seasons (summer and fall). The diurnal pattern in the warm seasons was mainly related to the development of warm thermal dynamic processes in the planetary boundary layer, while it was usually associated with synoptic-scale weather patterns during the cold seasons. Abstract: To investigate the dispersibility of lipid coated particles in food suspensions, contact angle of lipid surface at different pH, salt concentration, protein concentration, surfactant type and concentration was measured. Contact angle decreased with an increase in the emulsifier conecentration when the concentration was low, and reached a fairly constant value at higher concentrations. Whey protein was more efficient compared to other emulsifiers and decreased the contact angle from 100° to 40° at a concentration of 0.5g/L or higher in water. Tween 20 was more efficient than other tween emulsifiers and it decreased the contact angle from 100° to 67° at a concentration of 1g/L. Surface pressure area isotherm of 150-80SV soybean oil coated particles at an air–water interface was obtained using Langmuir trough. Contact angle of the particles at the air–liquid interface, inferred from the critical surface pressure in the isotherm, agreed well with the contact angle of planar surface obtained using goniometer. Dispersibility of 150-80SV soybean oil coated particles in aqueous solution was characterized by measuring the bulk particle concentration upon suspension. At pH 2.5, 5g/L whey protein in the presence of 0.5mol/L NaCl in 50g/L citrate buffer showed highest dispersibility. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A continuous system with a mechanical whipper was designed to make protein stabilized foams. Three different impellers (four-blade, six-blade-straight and six-blade-curve disc) were employed to make foams stabilized by sodium caseinate and whey protein. The inlet liquid flow rate of protein solution was varied in the range of 5–15mL/s, the whipper speed in the range of 5000–15,000rpm and temperature ranged from 21 to 80°C. The effects of whipper speed, flow rate, type of protein, temperature and whipper geometry on foamability, foam stability, power input, apparent viscosity index and bubble size distribution of foams were investigated. Higher foaming capacity was observed at higher whipper speeds, lower liquid flow rates, and in the case of sodium caseinate stabilized foams. The power input was found to be highest for the lowest liquid flow rate. A six-blade curved impeller rotating along and opposite to the direction of the curvature of vanes produced the most foam and smallest bubble size, respectively. Higher temperatures resulted in better foam stability for foams formed with whey protein whereas it had detrimental effect on foam stability with sodium caseinate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A model for drainage of a power-law fluid through a Plateau border is proposed which accounts for the actual Plateau border geometry and interfacial mobility. The non-dimensionalized Navier–Stokes equations have been solved using finite element method to obtain the contours of velocity within the Plateau border cross section and average Plateau border velocity in terms of dimensionless inverse surface viscosity and power-law rheological parameters. The velocity coefficient, the correction for the average velocity through a Plateau border of actual geometry compared to that for a simplified circular geometry of the same area of cross section, was expressed as a function of dimensionless inverse surface viscosity and flow behavior index of the power-law fluid. The results of this improved model for Plateau border drainage were then incorporated in a previously developed foam drainage model [G. Narsimhan, J. Food Eng. 14 (1991) 139] to predict the evolution of liquid holdup profiles in a standing foam. Foam drainage was found to be slower for actual Plateau border cross section compared to circular geometry and faster for higher interfacial mobility and larger bubble size. Evolution of liquid holdup profiles in a standing foam formed by whipping and stabilized by 0.1% β-lactoglobulin in the presence of xanthan gum when subjected to 16g and 45g centrifugal force fields was measured using magnetic resonance imaging for different xanthan gum concentrations. Drainage resulted in the formation of a separate liquid layer at the bottom at longer times. Measured bubble size, surface shear viscosity of β-lactoglobulin solutions and literature values of power-law parameters of xanthan gum solution were employed in the current model to predict the evolution of liquid holdup profile which compared well with the experimental data. Abstract: A generalized formalism for the rupture of an equilibrium foam film due to imposed random thermal and mechanical perturbations, modeled as a Gaussian white noise, is presented. The evolution of amplitude of perturbation is described by a stochastic differential equation. The average film rupture time is the average time for the amplitude of perturbation to equal to one half the film thickness and is calculated by employing a first passage time analysis for different amplitudes of imposed perturbations, wavenumbers, film thickness, van der Waals and electrostatic interactions and interfacial mobilities. A critical film thickness is identified based on the sign of the disjoining pressure gradient, below which the film is unstable in that the rupture time is very small. There exists an optimum wavenumber for minimum rupture time only for an unstable film. The calculated values of rupture time as well as the optimum wavenumber in the present analysis agree well with the results of linear stability analysis for unstable film with immobile film interfaces. For stable films, the rupture time is found to increase dramatically with film thickness near the critical film thickness. As expected, the average rupture time was found to be higher for smaller amplitudes of imposed perturbations, larger surface potentials and smaller Hamaker constants. The interfacial mobility is accounted for through surface viscosity as well as Marangoni effect. The mean rupture time for partially mobile gas–liquid interface, as characterized by two dimensionless groups, dimensionless surface viscosity and dimensionless Marangoni number, increased with the two dimensionless groups and approached the limiting value for immobile interfaces. The second moment of the rupture time distribution was also evaluated and a beta distribution was fitted to the first two moments. The fitted rupture time distribution was found to be broader for larger film thickness, smaller pressure amplitude, lower Hamaker constant and smaller surface potential. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Previous analysis of Narsimhan [G. Narsimhan, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 287 (2005) 624–633] for the evaluation of rupture of a nondraining thin film on a solid support due to imposed random mechanical perturbations modeled as a Gaussian white noise has been extended for partially mobile gas–liquid interfaces. The average rupture time of film is evaluated by first passage time analysis (as the mean time for the amplitude of perturbation to become equal to film thickness). The interfacial mobility is accounted for through surface viscosity as well as Marangoni effect. The mean rupture time for partially mobile gas–liquid interface, as characterized by two dimensionless groups, dimensionless surface viscosity and Marangoni number, lies between the two extreme limits for fully mobile and immobile films. The critical wavenumber for minimum rupture time is shown to be insensitive to interfacial mobility. However, the critical dimensionless surface viscosity and critical Marangoni number at which the behavior of thin film deviates from that of fully mobile film and the behavior approaches that of fully immobile film are smaller for higher Hamaker constants, smaller film thickness and smaller surface potentials. Abstract: Linear stability analysis for a film on a solid surface with a viscoelastic air–liquid interface is presented. The interfacial dilatational and shear viscoelastic properties were described by Maxwell models. Dilatational and shear interfacial elasticity and viscosity were shown to improve film stability. When the interfacial rheological properties are extremely large or small, the maximum perturbation growth coefficient is shown to reduce to those for immobile and mobile interfaces respectively. Calculated values of maximum growth coefficient for thin film stabilized by 0.5% β-lactoglobulin approached those of mobile films for thick () and those for immobile films for thin () films respectively with the values lying between the two limits for intermediate film thicknesses. Abstract: Evolution of liquid holdup profile in a standing foam formed by whipping and stabilized by sodium caseinate in the presence of xanthan gum when subjected to 16 and 29g centrifugal force fields was measured using magnetic resonance imaging for different pH, ionic strength, protein and xanthan gum concentrations. Drainage resulted in the formation of a separate liquid layer at the bottom at longer times. Foam drainage was slowest at pH 7, lower ionic strength, higher protein and gum concentrations. Foam was found to be most stable at pH 5.1 near the isoelectric point of protein, lower ionic strength and higher protein and xanthan gum concentrations. A predicted equilibrium liquid holdup profile based on a previous model (G. Narsimhan, J. Food Eng. 14 (1991) 139) agreed well with experimental values at sufficiently long times. A proposed model for velocity of drainage of a power law fluid in a Plateau border for two different simplified geometries was incorporated in a previously developed model for foam drainage (G. Narsimhan, J. Food Eng. 14 (1991) 139) to predict the evolution of liquid holdup profiles. The model predictions for simplified circular geometry of Plateau border compared well with the experimental data of liquid holdup profiles at small times. At longer times, however, the predicted liquid holdup profile was larger than the observed, this discrepancy being due to coarsening of bubble size and decrease in foam height not accounted for in the model. Ho,Pr:CaYAlO 4 (Ho,Pr:CYA) crystal doped with 1 at.% Ho3+ and 0.1 at.% Pr3+ was successfully grown using the Czochralski method. Polarized absorption spectra, emission spectra, and fluorescence lifetime measurements were performed. The impact of Pr3+ co-doping on the ∼3 μm emission of Ho3+ ions was analyzed. The energy transfer efficiency from Ho3+:5I 7 to Pr3+:3F 2 energy level was calculated to be 60.66 %, indicating that Pr3+ effectively mitigated the self-termination effect in Ho,Pr:CYA crystals. The absorption cross-section at 645 nm was found to be 1.53 × 10−20 cm2 for σ polarization and 2.62 × 10−20 cm2 for π polarization. The emission cross-section at 2842 nm was calculated to be 0.86 × 10−20 cm2 for σ polarization and 1.33 × 10−20 cm2 for π polarization at 2908 nm, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 139 nm and 88 nm, respectively. The fluorescence lifetimes of the 5I 6 and 5I 7 levels were measured to be 0.17 ms and 2.01 ms, respectively. To simulate biological visual systems and surpass their functions and performance, it is essential to develop high‐performance optoelectronic neuromorphic electronics with broadband response, low power consumption, and fast response speed. Among these, optoelectronic synaptic transistors have emerged as promising candidates for constructing neuromorphic visual systems. In this work, flexible printed broadband (from 275 to 1050 nm) optoelectronic carbon nanotube synaptic transistors with good stability, high response speed (3.14 ms), and low‐power consumption (as low as 0.1 fJ per event with the 1050 nm pulse illumination) using PbS quantum dots (QDs) modified semiconducting single‐walled carbon nanotubes (sc‐SWCNTs) as active layers are developed. In response to optical pulses within the ultraviolet to near‐infrared wavelength range, the optoelectronic neuromorphic devices exhibit excitatory postsynaptic current, paired‐pulse facilitation, and a transition from short‐term plasticity to long‐term plasticity, and other optical synaptic behaviors. Furthermore, a simplified neural morphology visual array is developed to simulate integrated functions such as image perception, memory, and preprocessing. More importantly, it can also emulate other complicated bionic functions, such as the infrared perception of salmon eyes and the warning behavior of reindeer in different environments. Background: Gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) is widespread in patients with impaired renal function. Whether angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin II receptor blockers (ACEi/ARBs) potentially take a crucial role in avoiding GIB incidence among peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients is unknown. Methods: Overall, 734 PD patients were enrolled after using propensity score matching. Kaplan–Meier analysis and COX regression were used to explore correlation between ACEi/ARBs and GIB. Competitive risk model was aimed to identify whether other events were confounding factors. Forest plot was applied to assess the influence of ACEI/ARBs on GIB incidence in different groups. Results: During 8-year follow-up, 89 (12.13%) cases of GIB were recorded. Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed that the incidence of GIB among patients taking ACEi/ARBs was lower than those subjects who had not (log rank = 6.442, P = 0.011). After adjusted different confounding factors, administration of ACEi/ARBs was associated with lowered GIB incidence (adjusted HR = 0.49, 95% CI 0.32–0.77, P = 0.002). In competitive risk model, considering of other events, the incidence of GIB in two groups was still statistically significant (P = 0.010). Subgroup analysis showed ACEi/ARBs taking impeded GIB in the ≥ 60 age group (HR = 0.52, 95% CI 0.28–0.98, P = 0.040). PARP inhibitors have been proven clinically efficacious in platinum-responsive ovarian cancer regardless of BRCA1/2 status and in breast cancers with germline BRCA1/2 mutation. However, resistance to PARP inhibitors may preexist or evolve during treatment in many cancer types and may be overcome by combining PARP inhibitors with other therapies, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, which confer durable responses and are rapidly becoming the standard of care for multiple tumor types. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of combining niraparib, a highly selective PARP1/2 inhibitor, with anti-PD-1 immune checkpoint inhibitors in preclinical tumor models. Our results indicate that niraparib treatment increases the activity of the type I (alpha) and type II (gamma) interferon pathways and enhances the infiltration of CD8+ cells and CD4+ cells in tumors. When coadministered in immunocompetent models, the combination of niraparib and anti-PD-1 demonstrated synergistic antitumor activities in both BRCA-proficient and BRCA-deficient tumors. Interestingly, mice with tumors cured by niraparib monotherapy completely rejected tumor growth upon rechallenge with the same tumor cell line, suggesting the potential establishment of immune memory in animals treated with niraparib monotherapy. This systematic review with embedded meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in lung cancer. After screening and review of the Embase database search, 111 studies from 2015 to 2020 demonstrated ctDNA's value in prognostication/monitoring disease progression, mainly in patients with advanced/metastatic disease and non–small cell lung cancer. ctDNA positivity/detection at any time point was associated with shorter progression-free survival and overall survival, whereas ctDNA clearance/decrease during treatment was associated with a lower risk of progression and death. A large number of studies have shown that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are associated with infection events. Therefore, we retrospectively evaluated the association of PPI therapy with the occurrence of first pneumonia and peritoneal dialysis(PD)-related peritonitis events in the maintenance PD patients. We collected PD patients in two large hospitals from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2016, and divided them into the PPI group and the non-PPI group. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were applied to evaluate the cumulative incidence and hazard ratios (HRs). Inverse probability of treatment weight (IPTW) method was used to adjust for covariate imbalance between the two groups and further confirm our findings. Finally, 656 PD patients were included for data analysis, and the results showed that PPI usage was associated with an increased risk of pneumonia [HR 1.71; 95% CI 1.06-2.76; p = 0.027] and peritonitis [HR 1.73; 95% CI 1.24-2.40; p = 0.001]. IPTW-adjusted HRs for the association of PPIs with pneumonia and peritonitis were 1.58 (95% CI:1.18-2.12; p = 0.002) and 2.33 (95% CI:1.91-2.85; p < 0.001), respectively. Moreover, the competitive risk model proved that under the conditions of competition for other events(including transfer to hemodialysis therapy, kidney transplant, transfer from our research center, loss to follow-up, and death), the differences in endpoints events between the two groups were still statistically significant (p = 0.009, p < 0.001, respectively). PPIs was associated with an increased risk of first pneumonia and PD-related peritonitis events in PD patients, which reminds clinicians to be cautious when prescribing acid-suppressing drugs for PD patients. A long period of inappropriate proton pump inhibitors (PPI) treatment has been proved to be associated with adverse prognosis in general population and hemodialysis patients. This study was conducted to clarify the impact of PPI usage on mortality and adverse cardiovascular (CV) events in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. This is a retrospective study. A total of 905 patients were enrolled from two PD centers, including 211 patients on PPI treatment and 618 patients not on PPIs. Kaplan–Meier curves were used to identify the incidence of adverse outcomes. Multivariate Cox regression models and inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) were applied to analyze hazard ratios (HRs) for adverse outcomes. During follow-up, 162 deaths and 102 CV events were recorded. Kaplan–Meier curve demonstrated all-cause mortality (log-rank test p =.018) and CV events (log-rank test p =.024) were significantly higher in PPI usage group. Multivariate Cox regression models and IPTW showed that PPI usage was an indicator for all-cause mortality (HR = 1.35, 95%CI = 1.09–1.67, p =.006) and CV events (HR = 1.78, 95%CI = 1.35–2.32, p <.001). PPI usage is associated with higher all-cause mortality and CV events in PD patients. Background: Although neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is closely associated with pneumonia in the general population, its relationship is unclear in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Methods: This is a cohort study consisting of 739 PD patients and dividing into two groups. Kaplan–Meier curves were applied to observe the incidence of the first occurrence of pneumonia, competitive risk analysis was conducted to compare whether there was a significant difference in each NLR group in the presence of other competing events, multivariable COX regression analysis was used to evaluate the hazard ratios (HRs), as well as forest plot was used to analyze the relationship between NLR and the first occurrence of pneumonia in different subgroups. Results: Of all the patients, 116 cases of first-time pneumonia were recorded. The first-time pneumonia incidence rate was 71.67/1000 patient-years in high NLR group, which was markedly higher than that of 45.81/1000 patient-years in low NLR group. Kaplan–Meier curves indicated significant differences in the incidence of the first occurrence of pneumonia between two groups (log-rank test p = 0.015). The competitive risk model suggested a significant difference in the cumulative incidence of first pneumonia between the two groups (p = 0.032). Compared to low NLR group, adjusted Cox model showed that high NLR group was associated with increased risk of pneumonia incidence (HR, 1.51; 95% CI 1.04–2.21; p = 0.031). Forest plot showed no interaction was found in subgroups. The incidence of the first occurrence of stroke was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier cumulative incidence curve among different NLR tertiles, competing risk analysis was used to calculate the incidence of the first occurrence of stroke in the presence of competing risk of other events, multivariable COX regression analysis was performed to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) for the first occurrence of stroke, as well as forest plot was utilized to describe the relationship between NLR and the first occurrence of stroke in different subgroups.Results: During follow-up, 84 new-onset stroke events were recorded. Kaplan-Meier cumulative incidence curves showed significant differences in the incidence of the first occurrence of stroke among three groups (log-rank test: P < .001). In competing risk analysis, the cumulative incidence curves for tertiles of NLR levels were highly significant for the first occurrence of stroke (P < .001), but they were not statistically different for the occurrence of other events. Compared to the lowest tertile of NLR level, the highest tertile was associated with increased risk of the first occurrence of stroke in the adjusted Cox model (HR = 2.39, 95% CI: 1.37 to 4.15; P < .05). Background. Although mean platelet volume (MPV) appears to be associated with poor outcome of pneumonia, the relationship between MPV and in-hospital mortality is unclear in severe pneumonia (SP) patients. Methods. In this retrospective cohort study, 115 SP patients from June 1st, 2016, to September 29th, 2019, were included and divided into two groups. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was performed to assess the predictive ability for in-hospital mortality. Kaplan-Meier cumulative incidence curves were applied to observe the incidence of mortality. Multivariable Cox regression analyses were used to evaluate the hazard ratios (HRs). Besides, a formal test for interaction was investigated to analyze the relationship between MPV and sex. Results. During the course of hospitalization, 63 cases of mortality were recorded. ROC analysis suggested that MPV had a modest power for predicting in-hospital mortality (AUC = 0.723 , 95% CI: 0.628-0.818, P < 0.001). Yet the cutoff value of MPV was 10.5 (sensitivity = 73.02 %; specificity = 73.08 %). Compared to the low-MPV group, the high-MPV group had significantly increased in-hospital mortality (log-rank test = 13.501 , P < 0.001), while the adjusted Cox model indicated that the high-MPV group was associated with an elevated risk of in-hospital mortality (HR: 2.267, 95% CI: 1.166-4.406, P = 0.016). Moreover, analyses of in-hospital mortality suggested a significant interaction between optimal MPV level and sex (P = 0.011). In a multivariate Cox model which included females only, a high MPV level was associated with increased risk of in-hospital mortality (HR: 11.387, 95% CI: 1.767-73.380, P = 0.011). Conclusion. Background. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a new inflammatory marker; the relationship between NLR and adverse cardiovascular (CV) prognosis has been gradually emphasized in the general population. However, their association in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients remains unclear. Methods. From January 1, 2010, to May 31, 2017, a total of 1652 patients were recruited. NLR was categorized in triplicates: NLR ≤ 2.74 , 2.74 < NLR ≤ 3.96 , and NLR > 3.96. Kaplan-Meier cumulative incidence curve and multivariable COX regression analysis were used to determine the relationship between NLR and the incidence of adverse CV outcome, while a competitive risk model was applied to assess the effects of other outcomes on adverse CV prognosis. Besides, forest plot was investigated to analyze the adverse CV prognosis in different subgroups. Results. During follow-up, 213 new-onset CV events and 153 CV disease (CVD) deaths were recorded. Multivariable COX regression models showed that the highest tertile of NLR level was associated with increased risk of CV events (HR = 1.39 , 95 % CI = 1.01 ‐ 1.93 , P = 0.046) and CVD mortality (HR = 1.81 , 95 % CI = 1.22 ‐ 2.69 , P = 0.003), while compared to the lowest tertile. Competitive risk models showed that the differences in CV event (P < 0.001) and CVD mortality (P = 0.004) among different NLR groups were still significant while excluding the effects of other outcomes. In subgroups, with each 1 increased in the NLR level, adjusted HR of new-onset CV event was 2.02 (95 % CI = 1.26 − 3.23 , P = 0.003) and CVD mortality was 2.98 (95 % CI = 1.58 − 5.62 , P = 0.001) in the younger group (age < 60 years). Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the primary air pollutants, and open optical path detection of NO holds immense significance in safeguarding the ecological environment and human health. In this paper, a high precision and high sensitivity NO open optical path sensor based on mid-infrared laser absorption spectroscopy technology is developed. The average gas concentration inversion of the NO path is achieved by collecting the backscattered light from the cooperative target. The gas measurement deploys a wavelength modulation method to remove the effects from light intensity variations. Furthermore, a Kalman filter and a temperature–pressure sensor optimization software algorithm were utilized to reduce the effects of temperature–pressure variations during the measurement process, leading to a 33% improvement in detection accuracy. The performance of the sensor was evaluated in the laboratory environment in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, and detection limit. The atmospheric NO concentration was also measured under varying time periods and weather conditions in the field environment, thus laying a strong foundation for studying the spatial and temporal evolution of NO in the atmosphere. Standoff detection of flammable and toxic gases simultaneously is important for leakage warning and safe production in oil and gas industries. A portable and robust single-ended laser sensor is developed to retrieve path-averaged gas concentrations of methane (CH 4) and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) by collecting the backscattered light from a distant non-cooperative target. Time-division multiplexing of two semiconductor lasers with pigtails are employed to cover the absorption lines of CH 4 and H 2 S at 1653.73 nm and 1578.13 nm, respectively. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy with 1 f normalized 2 f detection (WMS-2 f /1 f) method is used for gas measurement to eliminate the change of return light intensity caused by different distances and different non cooperative targets. Kalman filter is developed as a post-processing method to reduce the output fluctuations during standoff gas measurement. The performance of the sensor is assessed, including signal noise ratio under different standoff distances and hard targets, measurement precision, time-response and the detection limit. Podocyte injury is a vital factor, which induces massive proteinuria. Studies have shown that tacrolimus (TAC) protected podocyte via stabilizing cytoskeleton. Our latest study indicates that calcineurin binding protein 1 (Cabin1) undergoes nuclear translocation during podocytes injury. Whether TAC targets on Cabin1 during podocyte injury is still not clear. This study establishes non-immunological proteinuric model. To observe the effect of the treatment of TAC on Cabin1 expression in 5/6 nephrectomized rats. Sprague–Dawley rats were injected with TAC (0.2 mg/kg/day) for 4–8 weeks after 5/6 nephrectomy. Then, rats were sacrificed in the eighth week after operation, renal tissues were processed for morphological studies under light and electrical microscope. Cabin1 expression and distribution were detected by western blot and indirect immunofluorescence staining. In 5/6 nephrectomized rats, urinary protein excretion reached 90.2 ± 30.1 mg/24 h, glomerular sclerosis index and tubulointerstitial fibrosis score were significantly increased, and widespread of podocyte foot processes fusion was found. Moreover, Cabin1 protein expression was markedly increased, and its distribution became much more obviously in podocytes nuclei. In TAC treated rats, urinary protein excretion significantly decreased (44.9 ± 22.5 mg/24 h), glomerular sclerosis and tubulointerstitial fibrosis were alleviated, and podocyte foot processes fusion was inhibited. Furthermore, TAC alleviated the increased protein expression and abnormal distribution of Cabin1. In conclusion, TAC restores podocyte injury and stabilizes the expression of Cabin1. Background & Aims Overexpression of FoxM1 correlates with poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Moreover, the Ras-signaling pathway is found to be ubiquitously activated in HCC through epigenetic silencing of the Ras-regulators. We investigated the roles of FoxM1 in Ras-driven HCC, and on HCC cells with stem-like features. Methods We employed a transgenic mouse model that expresses the oncogenic Ras in the liver. That strain was crossed with a strain that harbor floxed alleles of FoxM1 and the MxCre gene that allows conditional deletion of FoxM1 . FoxM1 alleles were deleted after development of HCC, and the effects on the tumors were analyzed. Also, FoxM1 siRNA was used in human HCC cell lines to determine its role in the survival of the HCC cells with stem cell features. Results Ras-driven tumors overexpress FoxM1. Deletion of FoxM1 inhibits HCC progression. There was increased accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the FoxM1 deleted HCC cells. Moreover, FoxM1 deletion caused a disproportionate loss of the CD44+ and EpCAM+ HCC cells in the tumors. We show that FoxM1 directly activates expression of CD44 in human HCC cells. Moreover, the human HCC cells with stem cell features are addicted to FoxM1 for ROS-regulation and survival. Conclusion Our results provide genetic evidence for an essential role of FoxM1 in the progression of Ras-driven HCC. In addition, FoxM1 is required for the expression of CD44 in HCC cells. In June 2006, samples were collected from a 90 cm snow-pit at an elevation of 5 040 m a.s.l. in the northern branch firn basin of the Glacier No. 12, Laohugou Valley, in the western part of Qilian Mountain, China. Oxygen isotopes (δO) and major soluble ions were measured. Results showed that Ca is the dominant cation, and SO is the dominant anion. All major ions have close positive correlations with eachother except NO and NH. δO show positive correlation with air temperature. The method of correlation analysis, sea-salt ion tracer and trend analysis were used to determine the source of the chemical components. Summary: Accelerated glucose metabolism is a common feature of cancer cells. Hexokinases catalyze the first committed step of glucose metabolism. Hexokinase 2 (HK2) is expressed at high level in cancer cells, but only in a limited number of normal adult tissues. Using Hk2 conditional knockout mice, we showed that HK2 is required for tumor initiation and maintenance in mouse models of KRas-driven lung cancer, and ErbB2-driven breast cancer, despite continued HK1 expression. Similarly, HK2 ablation inhibits the neoplastic phenotype of human lung and breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Systemic Hk2 deletion is therapeutic in mice bearing lung tumors without adverse physiological consequences. Comparative genome-wide expression profiling of malignant tumor counterparts across the human-mouse species barrier has a successful track record as a gene discovery tool in liver, breast, lung, prostate and other cancers, but has been largely neglected in studies on neoplasms of mature B-lymphocytes such as diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Burkitt lymphoma (BL). We used global gene expression profiles of DLBCL-like tumors that arose spontaneously in Myc-transgenic C57BL/6 mice as a phylogenetically conserved filter for analyzing the human DLBCL transcriptome. The human and mouse lymphomas were found to have 60 concordantly deregulated genes in common, including 8 genes that Cox hazard regression analysis associated with overall survival in a published landmark dataset of DLBCL. Genetic network analysis of the 60 genes followed by biological validation studies indicate FOXM1 as a candidate DLBCL and BL gene, supporting a number of studies contending that FOXM1 is a therapeutic target in mature B cell tumors. Our findings demonstrate the value of the “mouse filter” for genomic studies of human B-lineage neoplasms for which a vast knowledge base already exists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
