This study examines the predictive value of elevated N-terminal-pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro BNP) levels for mortality among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Data from 768 ESRD patients, excluding those with cancer or lost follow-up, were analyzed using Kaplan–Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models over three years. Results indicated that patients with very high NT-pro BNP levels had shorter average survival times and a significantly higher risk of mortality (hazard ratio 1.43). Advanced age, ICU admission, and comorbidities like cerebrovascular diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also contributed to increased mortality risks. Thus, elevated NT-pro BNP is an independent risk factor for mortality in ESRD patients.

Abstract Background Brown root rot disease is one of the devastating diseases in the rubber production process. It is not easy to be detected in the early stage of the disease. Our early research revealed that the rubber tree brown root rot fungus Pyrrhoderma noxium Pn006 was effectively inhibited by Bacillus subtilis Czk1 and 25% propiconazole–tebuconazole, and that the two agents might work in synergy. Therefore, in this investigation, we used non-targeted metabolomic method to evaluate the synergistic mechanism of B. subtilis Czk1 and 25% propiconazole–tebuconazole on Pyrrhoderma noxium Pn006. Results Metabolomics analysis identified 708 unique metabolic markers, including mainly lipids and lipid-like molecules, organic acids, alcohols, ketones, alkaloids and their derivatives, nucleotides and their analogues, benzene ring compounds and amino acids and their derivatives. Further screening identified 105 key metabolic markers that could be potential biomarkers to reveal the mechanism of biocontrol bacteria and chemical fungicides combination synergy. Three key metabolic pathways were found in pathway enrichment, including linolenic acid metabolism, benzoic acid degradation, and valine, leucine and isoleucine degradation. Conclusions The mechanism might be related to the influence of the energy supply and cell functional integrity of pathogenic fungal cells. This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys.

Abstract Background New-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) is a common complication in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) during hospitalization. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a novel inflammation marker that is significantly associated with AF. The association between post-AMI NOAF and Gal-3 during hospitalization is yet unclear. Objective The present study aimed to investigate the predictive value of plasma Gal-3 for post-AMI NOAF. Methods A total of 217 consecutive patients admitted with AMI were included in this retrospective study. The lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) is a paper-based platform with extensive application in point-of-care (POC) testing and many fields. However, its clinical application is severely limited due to the lack of quantitative ability of standard LFIA tests; this augmentation provides the system with quantifying the signal from magenta-colored AuNPs. To address this issue, we proposed an ultra-compact optical system that allowed LFIAs to be performed more accurately and objectively. The experimental setup consisted of multiple optical accessories manufactured by 3D printing (STEP files were included). A high-resolution printer was used to print out a magenta card model for the LFIA, whose color code, ranging from 255, 255, 255 to 255, 0, 255 in the RGB (red, green, blue) format, represents different levels of magenta color intensity (from 0% to 100%) and thus the results of LFIA test strips. A mathematical model was built using a calibration curve to describe the relationship between magenta color value and reflectance spectrum. In addition, a spectrum module was integrated into the proposed system to identify and quantify LFIA results. This integration represents a pioneering step in developing portable detection techniques that facilitate quantifying LFIA results. Finally, we expect this ultra-compact optical spectroscopy system to have great potential for novel clinical applications.

Desmodium triflorum is an important gramineous forage grown in tropical regions of China. In August 2022, a new leaf spot disease was observed on D. triflorum during a field survey at the base of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, Hainan, China. The pathogen was isolated and identified using morphological examination and phylogeny based on multi‐gene sequences analysis of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer, the second largest RNA polymerase subunit (RPB2), and beta‐tubulin genes. The isolates were identified as Epicoccum sorghinum. The pathogenicity of E. sorghinum on D. triflorum was validated fulfilling Koch's postulates, causing leaf spot disease. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is the global public health challenge currently persisting at a grand scale. A method that meets the rapid quantitative detection of antibodies to assess the body's immune response from natural COVID-19 illness or vaccines' effects is urgently needed. In the present study, an attempt was made to integrate a newly designed spectrometer to the COVID-19 test strip procedure; this augmentation provides the quantitative capacity to a lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA). Optical interpretation of results by quantitative α index, rather than visual qualification, can be done quickly, in 5-10 minutes. The developed product was compared with several other serological IgM/IgG antibody reagents on the market by recruiting 111 participants suspected of having COVID-19 infection from March to May 2020 in a hospital. Taking RT-PCR as the diagnostic gold standard, the quantitative spectral LIFA platform could correctly detect all 12 COVID-19 patients. Concerning RT-PCR negative patients, all three antibody testing methods found positive cases. The optical-based platform exhibited the ability of early detection of immunoglobulins of RT-PCR negative patients. There was an apparent trend that elevation of IgM levels in the acute phase of infection; then IgG levels rose later. It exhibited the risk of a false-negative diagnosis of RT-PCR in COVID-19 testing. The significant detection ability of this new optical-based platform demonstrated clinical potential.

Background. Skiing is a high-risk winter sport, and the rate of injury fatality is the highest compared to other winter sports. During skiing rescue, the harsh natural environments will increase the difficulty of artificial airway establishment. There has been no research focusing on the establishment of the artificial airway during skiing rescue site. This study aims to simulate the real-world scenario, calculating and comparing the operation time of different artificial airways on the cold slope, and to explore the optimal method of establishing artificial airway on the cold slope, sharing our experience, technical notes, and pitfalls we encountered, hoping to help establish a standard operating procedure in advanced airway management on the ski slope. Methods. The simulated human was placed on the cold slope with the head under the feet. Artificial airway was established by the same anesthesiologist using endotracheal intubation (endotracheal intubation group), LMA Supreme laryngeal mask (LMA group), and I-gel laryngeal mask (I-gel group). Each method was repeated 5 times, and the operation time and whether it was successful by one attempt were recorded and compared between groups. Results. Three groups of artificial airway were successful by one attempt.. The bite block dropped and drifted away for one time in the endotracheal intubation group. Operation time is 209.2 ± 32.7 seconds in the endotracheal intubation group, 72.2 ± 3.1 seconds in the LMA group, and 52.6 ± 4.2 seconds in the I-gel group. The nonlinear local Lyapunov exponent (NLLE) can be used as a quantification of the local predictability limit of chaotic systems. In this study, the phase-spatial structure of the local predictability limit over the Lorenz-63 system is investigated. It is found that the inner and outer rims of each regime of the attractor have a high probability of a longer than average local predictability limit, while the center part is the opposite. However, the distribution of the local predictability limit is nonuniformly organized, with adjacent points sometimes showing quite distinct error growth. The source of local predictability is linked to the local dynamics, which is related to the region in the phase space and the duration on the current regime.

Background: Ageing is characterized by progressive renal dysfunction to varying degrees, but its effect on N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is vague. We hypothesized that the thresholds of NT-proBNP for heart failure are stratified in elders with different stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, elders aged > 65 with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 ml/min for ≥ 3 months were included. Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is defined as a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is 40% or less and is accompanied by progressive left ventricular dilatation and adverse cardiac remodeling. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess the optimal thresholds of NT-proBNP for diagnosing HFrEF. Results: This study analyzed a cohort comprising 1009 patients with CKD (222 cases of stage 3, 257 cases of stage 4, and 530 cases of stage 5). Of the subjects, 475 were with HFrEF and 534 without HFrEF. Mean NT-proBNP levels are 3060 pg/ml, 4360 pg/ml, and 16030 pg/ml for CKD stage 3, stage 4, and stage 5 patient groups, respectively. Mean NT-proBNP levels in the HFrEF group were about 4-fold higher compared to the non-HFrEF group. Optimal NT-proBNP cut-offs of HFrEF diagnosis for CKD stage 3, stage 4, and stage 5 were 1420 pg/ml, 2540 pg/ml, and 19800 pg/ml, respectively. Conclusions: NT-proBNP was elevated in advance staged CKD even in the absence of HFrEF, and the magnitude of increase in NT-proBNP was significant in the elderly population.
