Abstract Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone malignancy in children and young adults, and it has few treatment options. As a result, there has been little improvement in survival outcomes in the past few decades. The need for models to test novel therapies is especially great in this disease since it is both rare and does not respond to most therapies. To address this, an NCI-funded consortium has characterized and utilized a panel of patient-derived xenograft models of osteosarcoma for drug testing. The exomes, transcriptomes, and copy number landscapes of these models have been presented previously. This study now adds whole genome sequencing and reverse-phase protein array profiling data, which can be correlated with drug testing results. In addition, four additional osteosarcoma models are described for use in the research community.

Abstract Sharding blockchain is a technology designed to improve the performance and scalability of traditional blockchain systems. However, due to its design, communication between shards depends on shard leaders for transmitting information, while shard members are unable to detect communication activities between shards. Consequently, Byzantine nodes can act as shard leaders, engaging in malicious behaviors to disrupt message transmission. To address these issues, we propose the Cross shard leader accountability protocol (CSLAP), which is based on the two-phase atomic commit protocol (2PC). CSLAP employs byzantine broadcast/byzantine agreement (BB/BA) for Byzantine fault tolerance to generate cross-shard leader re-election certificates, thereby reducing the impact of shard leaders on inter-shard communication. It also uses Round-robin mechanism to facilitate leader re-election. Moreover, we demonstrate that CSLAP maintains the security and liveness of sharding transactions while providing lower communication latency. Finally, we conducted an experimental comparison between CSLAP and other cross-shard protocols. The results indicate that CSLAP exhibits superior performance in reducing communication latency.

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to produce high value-added carbon-based fuel has been proposed as a promising approach to mitigate global warming issues. However, the conversion efficiency and product selectivity are still low due to the sluggish dynamics of transfer processes involved in proton-assisted multi-electron reactions. Lowering the formation energy barriers of intermediate products is an effective method to enhance the selectivity and productivity of final products. In this study, we aim to regulate the surface electronic structure of Bi2WO6 by doping surface chlorine atoms to achieve effective photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Surface Cl atoms can enhance the absorption ability of light, affect its energy band structure and promote charge separation. Combined with DFT calculations, it is revealed that surface Cl atoms can not only change the surface charge distribution which affects the competitive adsorption of H2O and CO2, but also lower the formation energy barrier of intermediate products to generate more intermediate ∗COOH, thus facilitating CO production. Overall, this study demonstrates a promising surface halogenation strategy to enhance the photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity of a layered structure Bi-based catalyst.

Good crystallinity can reduce the charge recombination centers caused by defects, whilst structures with strong polycondensation have high charge mobility, leading to more charge transfer to the material surface for reaction. Much effort has been put into the preparation of a highly efficient g-C3N4 with defects to improve its application potential under the premise in high crystallinity. Hence, this review paper emphasizes the importance to balance the defect and crystallinity of g-C3N4. In addition, detailed discussion on the relationship between defects and activity of g-C3N4 was carried out based on its applications in environmental purification (e.g., VOCs oxidation, NOx oxidation, H2O2 evolution, sterilization, pesticide oxidation) and energy conversion (H2 evolution, N2 fixation and CO2 reduction). Lastly, the challenge in developing more efficient defective g-C3N4 photocatalytic materials is summarized.

Most researches associated with target encircling control are focused on moving along a circular orbit under an ideal environment free from external disturbances. However, elliptical encirclement with a time-varying observation radius, may permit a more flexible and high-efficacy enclosing solution, whilst the non-orthogonal property between axial and tangential speed components, non-ignorable environmental perturbations, and strict assignment requirements empower elliptical encircling control to be more challenging, and the relevant investigations are still open. Following this line, an appointed-time elliptical encircling control rule capable of reinforcing circumnavigation performances is developed to enable Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to move along a specified elliptical path within a predetermined reaching time. The remarkable merits of the designed strategy are that the relative distance controlling error can be guaranteed to evolve within specified regions with a designer-specified convergence behavior. Meanwhile, wind perturbations can be online counteracted based on an unknown system dynamics estimator (USDE) with only one regulating parameter and high computational efficiency. Lyapunov tool demonstrates that all involved error variables are ultimately limited, and simulations are implemented to confirm the usability of the suggested control algorithm.

This paper is concerned with the [Formula: see text] control problem for singular systems over finite frequency ranges. The disturbance is assumed to be within low-/middle-/high-frequency ranges. Both the state feedback and static output feedback controllers are designed. First, by combining the Lyapunov function method and the generalized Kalman–Yakubovich–Popov lemma, a new finite frequency bounded real lemma (BRL) is proposed, which ensures the resulting closed-loop system to be regular, impulse free and stable with given finite frequency [Formula: see text] performance bound. It is shown by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation that the proposed BRL has less conservatism than the existing ones in the literature. With the aid of the Finsler's Lemma, two improved finite frequency BRLs are further presented for the design of controllers. Then, by utilizing convexification techniques, sufficient conditions for solving the desired state feedback and static output feedback gains are presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities, respectively. Finally, the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed control methods are verified by a 6-bus power network system.

BackgroundVascular cognitive impairment (VCI) manifests in memory impairment, mental slowness, executive dysfunction, behavioral changes, and visuospatial abnormalities, significantly compromising the quality of daily life for patients and causing inconvenience to caregivers. Neuroimaging serves as a crucial approach to evaluating the extent, location, and type of vascular lesions in patients suspected of VCI. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of comprehensive bibliometric analysis to discern the research status and emerging trends concerning VCI neuroimaging.ObjectiveThis study endeavors to explore the collaboration relationships of authors, countries, and institutions, as well as the research hotspots and frontiers of VCI neuroimaging by conducting a bibliometric analysis.MethodsWe performed a comprehensive retrieval within the Core Collection of Web of Science, spanning from 2000 to 2023. After screening the included literature, CiteSpace and VOSviewer were utilized for a visualized analysis aimed at identifying the most prolific author, institution, and journal, as well as extracting valuable information from the analysis of references.ResultsA total of 1,024 publications were included in this study, comprising 919 articles and 105 reviews. Through the analysis of keywords and references, the research hotspots involve the relationship between neuroimaging of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and VCI, the diagnosis of VCI, and neuroimaging methods pertinent to VCI. Moreover, potential future research directions encompass CSVD, functional and structural connectivity, neuroimaging biomarkers, and lacunar stroke.ConclusionThe research in VCI neuroimaging is constantly developing, and we hope to provide insights and references for future studies by delving into the research hotspots and frontiers within this field.

Organic cucurbit growers face many challenges to production including insect pests, insect-vectored diseases, and non-vectored diseases. While Organic Material Review Institute (OMRI) -listed pesticides underperform at suppressing pests and diseases, some alternative pest management strategies hold promise, but little research exists on their cost-effectiveness. We compared the efficacy of mesotunnel systems (nylon-mesh netting row covers deployed over bent metal hoops) and OMRI-listed pesticides (fungicides and insecticides) on acorn squash across 2 years. During the early part of the season, before row covers were removed for pollination, we found 1.7 (2020) and 0.3 (2021) times more cucumber beetles in the uncovered plots compared to the mesotunnels. Powdery mildew incidence was 36 and 25% lower under the mesotunnels compared to the uncovered plots in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Marketable yield of acorn squash was 46–54% higher in the mesotunnels compared to the uncovered treatments. OMRI-listed pesticide treatments reduced powdery mildew incidence compared to untreated control treatments. However, for pest presence, OMRI-listed pesticide treatments did not differ from untreated control treatments in either year, nor did it differ in marketable yield in 2020. Finally, the mesotunnel-only system was 47% more profitable compared to the OMRI-listed pesticide treatment and 47% more profitable compared to the uncovered plots. These results highlight mesotunnels as an economically viable pest management strategy for organic cucurbit growers in the U.S.

This paper addresses a multicircular circumnavigation control for UAVs with desired angular spacing around a nonstationary target. By defining a coordinated error relative to neighboring angular spacing, under the premise that target information is perfectly accessible by all nodes, a centralized circular enclosing control strategy is derived for multiple UAVs connected by an undirected graph to allow for formation behaviors concerning the moving target. Besides, to avoid the requirement of target’s states being accessible for each UAV, fixed-time distributed observers are introduced to acquire the state estimates in a fixed-time sense, and the upper boundary of settling time can be determined offline irrespective of initial properties, greatly releasing the burdensome communication traffic. Then, with the aid of fixed-time distributed observers, a distributed circular circumnavigation controller is derived to force all UAVs to collaboratively evolve along the preset circles while keeping a desired angular spacing. It is inferred from Lyapunov stability that all errors are demonstrated to be convergent. Simulations are offered to verify the utility of proposed protocol.

This article investigates a multi-circular path-following formation control with reinforced transient profiles for nonholonomic vehicles connected by a digraph. A multi-circular formation controller endowed with the feature of spatial-temporal decoupling is devised for a group of vehicles guided by a virtual leader evolving along an implicit path, which allows for a circumnavigation on multiple circles with an anticipant angular spacing. In addition, notice that it typically imposes a stringent time constraint on time-sensitive enclosing scenarios, hence an improved prescribed performance control (IPPC) using novel tighter behavior boundaries is presented to enhance transient capabilities with an ensured appointed-time convergence free from any overshoots. The significant merits are that coordinated circumnavigation along different circles can be realized via executing geometric and dynamic assignments independently with modified transient profiles. Furthermore, all variables existing in the entire system are analyzed to be convergent. Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the utility of suggested solution.

In this study, a composite coating comprising a ceramic film and layered double hydroxide (LDHs) layer was prepared on the surface of extruded 2195 Al–Li alloy. The preparation method, surface morphology, and chemical composition of the coating were described and characterized in detail. The corrosion and wear protection of the coating on the Al–Li alloy substrate were tested, and the mechanisms of corrosion and wear resistance were discussed. The results indicate that plasma electrolytic oxidation processing can form a thick ceramic film with good interface bonding on the surface of 2195 Al–Li alloy. Hydrothermal reaction in an alkaline solution produces a nanoscale layer of Mg/Al LDHs on the surface of the ceramic film. The LDHs layer fills the micro-pores and cracks in the film and effectively prevents the corrosion medium from permeating and damaging the alloy matrix. The composite coating reduces the surface corrosion efficiency by 99.98 %. Moreover, the composite-coated samples exhibit long-lasting corrosion resistance in seawater and exfoliation corrosion environments. Additionally, the composite-coated Al–Li alloy exhibits wear resistance 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the bare alloy at both room and high temperatures. This study proposes a novel strategy for corrosion and wear protection of Al–Li alloys.

This study analyzes the performance degradation of traditional hybrid wind turbines under high blade-tip-speed ratio conditions and proposes solutions through two-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. It also introduces the design of two innovative asynchronous-hybrid dual-rotor wind turbines. The results indicate a remarkable 98.5% enhancement in torque performance at low blade-tip-speed ratios with the hybrid wind turbine model. However, as the blade-tip-speed ratio increases, it leads to negative torque generation within the inner rotor of the conventional design, resulting in a reduction of the power coefficient by up to 13.1%. The introduction of the new wind turbine design addresses this challenge by eliminating negative torque at high blade-tip-speed ratios through adjustments in the inner rotor’s operating range. This modification not only rectifies the negative torque issue but also enhances the performance of the outer rotor in the leeward region, consequently boosting the overall power coefficient. Moreover, the optimized inner rotor configuration effectively disrupts and shortens the wake length by 16.7%, with this effect intensifying as the rotational speed increases. This optimization is pivotal for enhancing the efficiency of multi-machine operations within wind farms.

Examining dual vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) across various turbulence scenarios is crucial for advancing the efficiency of urban energy generation and promoting sustainable development. This study introduces a novel approach by employing two-dimensional numerical analysis through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to investigate the performance of VAWTs under varying turbulence intensity conditions, a topic that has been relatively unexplored in existing research. The analysis focuses on the self-starting capabilities and the effective utilization of wind energy, which are key factors in urban wind turbine deployment. The results reveal that while the impact of increased turbulence intensity on the self-starting performance of VAWTs is modest, there is a significant improvement in wind energy utilization within a specific turbulence range, leading to an average power increase of 1.41%. This phenomenon is attributed to the more complex flow field induced by heightened turbulence intensity, which delays the onset of dynamic stall through non-uniform aerodynamic excitation of the blade boundary layer. Additionally, the inherent interaction among VAWTs contributes to enhanced turbine output power. However, this study also highlights the trade-off between increased power and the potential for significant fatigue issues in the turbine rotor. These findings provide new insights into the optimal deployment of VAWTs in urban environments, offering practical recommendations for maximizing energy efficiency while mitigating fatigue-related risks.

Bacterial wilt of cucurbits, caused by Erwinia tracheiphila, is spread by spotted (Diabrotica undeimpunctata howardi) and striped (Acalymma vittatum) cucumber beetles and results in major losses for US cucurbit (Cucurbitaceae spp.) growers. Organic growers of muskmelon (Cucumis melo) lack reliable control measures against bacterial wilt. During previous field trials in Iowa, USA, a system called mesotunnels, which are 3.5-ft-tall barriers covered with a nylon mesh insect netting, resulted in a higher marketable yield of organic ‘Athena’ muskmelon than low tunnels or noncovered plots. However, satisfactory pollination and weed control are challenging in mesotunnels because the netting covers the crop for most or all of the growing season, and economic feasibility of these systems has not been determined. Consequently, two field trials conducted in Iowa from 2020 to 2022 evaluated strategies to ensure pollination under mesotunnels in commercial-scale plots, assess effectiveness of teff (Eragrostis tef) as a living mulch for weed control in mesotunnel systems, and compare the profitability of the treatment options for organic ‘Athena’ muskmelon. The treatments used during the pollination trial were as follows: full season, in which mesotunnels remained sealed all season and bumble bees (Bombus impatiens) were added at the start of bloom for pollination; open ends, wherein both ends of the tunnels were opened at the start of bloom then reclosed 2 weeks later; and on-off-on, in which nets were removed at the start of bloom and then reinstalled 2 weeks later. The full-season treatment had significantly higher marketable yield than the other treatments in two of three trial years. This study aimed to explore mixed-species biofilm formation (BF) between meat-derived Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas. The biofilm-forming capacity of isolates was evaluated by means of microplate crystal violet staining and the process of mixed-species biofilm formation between representative strains was investigated. The dynamic changes of biofilm amount, microstructure and the composition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were examined. Absolute quantitative real-time PCR was used to analyze the difference in the expression of BF-related genes. The results showed that there were significant inter-strain differences in the biofilm-forming capacity of E. coli and Pseudomonas (P < 0.05), in which the strains with strong biofilm-forming capacity accounted for 25.81% and 23.08%, respectively. The results of plate counting showed that the BF processes of E. coli D4-18 + Pseudomonas Y2-2 10, and E. coli C-13 + Pseudomonas Y2-1 1 were different on stainless steel sheet, and the interaction between the two species changed with BF time. Similar changes in the microstructure were observed by confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). The secretion of protein and polysaccharide in EPS was inhibited during mixed-species BF; the amount of protein decreased by 31% and 48%, respectively, and the amount of polysaccharide decreased by 38% and 56%, respectively, at 72 and 168 h of culture compared with the total EPS of the two single-species biofilms. The results of gene expression per unit cell number showed that the expression of BF-related genes was significantly up-regulated in the biofilm compared with the planktonic cells (P < 0.05). Compared with the single-species biofilm, the papC and csgA genes of E. coli in the mixed biofilm were significantly up-regulated at 72 and 168 h (P < 0.01), while the phoR and cbrA genes of Pseudomonas were significantly down-regulated at 72 h (P < 0.01). The absolute amount of genes expression per unit area in mixed-species BF changed compared with that in single-species BF. This study can provide a scientific basis for understanding the mixed-species BF of meat-derived spoilage microorganisms and for the risk assessment and control of microbial contamination in meat production and processing.

The rotor magnetic shunt structure hybrid excitation synchronous motor (RMS-HESM) has been widely used in marine propulsion due to its advantages of low loss and high efficiency. The objective of this paper is to improve the output torque capability of the hybrid excitation motor with a rotor magnetic shunt structure by conducting a multi-objective optimization design for the magnetic permeability structure. The first step involved establishing a mathematical analytical model of average torque and torque ripple based on the fundamental principle of motor magnetization. Next, the parameters of the magnetic permeability structure were designed and analyzed using the finite element simulation method. The impact of the variations in the parameters of the magnetic permeability structure on motor torque and no−load back electromotive force was examined. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was performed on the design variables of the magnetic permeability structure, leading to the determination of optimization parameters based on the obtained results. The adaptive inertia weight-based particle swarm algorithm (PSO) was employed to conduct a multi-objective optimization design analysis. A comparative analysis on the average torque, torque ripple, and no−load back electromotive force of the motor before and after optimization was performed using the Maxwell and Workbench and Optislong joint simulation tools. This enhancement significantly improves the torque performance of the marine motor while simultaneously optimizing the no−load back electromotive force.

This paper delves into enhancing the performance of ScAlN-based Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers (PMUTs) through the implementation of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) acoustic lenses. The PMUT, encapsulated in PDMS, underwent thorough characterization through the utilization of an industry-standard hydrophone calibration instrument. The experimental results showed that the ScAlN-based PMUT with the PDMS lenses achieved an impressive sensitivity of −160 dB (re: 1 V/μPa), an improvement of more than 8 dB compared to the PMUT with an equivalent PDMS film. There was a noticeable improvement in the −3 dB main lobe width within the frequency response when comparing the PMUT with PDMS encapsulation, both with and without lenses. The successful fabrication of high-performance PDMS lenses proved instrumental in significantly boosting the sensitivity of the PMUT. Comprehensive performance evaluations underscored that the designed PMUT in this investigation surpassed its counterparts reported in the literature and commercially available transducers. This encouraging outcome emphasizes its substantial potential for commercial applications.

In this study, we propose a method for optimizing the design of CMUT sensors using genetic algorithms. Existing CMUT sensors face frequency response and sensitivity limitations, necessitating optimization to enhance their sensing performance. Traditional optimization methods are often intricate and time-consuming and may fail to yield the optimal solution. Genetic algorithms, which simulate the biological evolution process, offer advantages in global optimization and efficiency, making them widely utilized in the optimization design of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) devices. Based on the theoretical framework and finite element model of CMUT sensors, we propose a CMUT array element optimization design method based on genetic algorithms. The optimization and validation results demonstrate that we have successfully designed a broadband CMUT array element consisting of four microelements with a 1–2 MHz frequency range. Compared with a randomly arranged array element, the optimized array shows a 63.9% increase in bandwidth and a 7.5% increase in average sensitivity within the passband. Moreover, the sensitivity variance within the passband is reduced by 50.2%. Our proposed method effectively optimizes the design of high sensitivity CMUT sensors with the desired bandwidth, thereby offering significant reference value for the optimization design of CMUT sensors.

Background The extracellular matrix (ECM) and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play major roles in tumor progression, metastasis, and the poor response of many solid tumors to immunotherapy. CAF-targeted chimeric antigen receptor-T cell therapy cannot infiltrate ECM-rich tumors such as osteosarcoma.Method In this study, we used RNA sequencing to assess whether the recently invented membrane-anchored and tumor-targeted IL-12-armed (attIL12) T cells, which bind cell-surface vimentin (CSV) on tumor cells, could destroy CAFs to disrupt the ECM. We established an in vitro model of the interaction between osteosarcoma CAFs and attIL12-T cells to uncover the underlying mechanism by which attIL12-T cells penetrate stroma-enriched osteosarcoma tumors.Results RNA sequencing demonstrated that attIL12-T cell treatment altered ECM-related gene expression. Immunohistochemistry staining revealed disruption or elimination of high-density CAFs and ECM in osteosarcoma xenograft tumors following attIL12-T cell treatment, and CAF/ECM density was inversely correlated with T-cell infiltration. Other IL12-armed T cells, such as wild-type IL-12-targeted or tumor-targeted IL-12-T cells, did not disrupt the ECM because this effect depended on the engagement between CSV on the tumor cell and its ligand on the attIL12-T cells. Mechanistic studies found that attIL12-T cell treatment elevated IFNγ production on interacting with CSV+ tumor cells, suppressing transforming growth factor beta secretion and in turn upregulating FAS-mediated CAF apoptosis. CAF destruction reshaped the tumor stroma to favor T-cell infiltration and tumor inhibition.Conclusions This study unveiled a novel therapy—attIL12-T cells—for targeting CAFs/ECM. These findings are highly relevant to humans because CAFs are abundant in human osteosarcoma.

Abstract High sensitivity and fast response are the figures of merit for benchmarking commercial sensors. Due to the advantages of intrinsic signal amplification, bionic ability, and mechanical flexibility, electrochemical transistors (ECTs) have recently gained increasing popularity in constructing various sensors. In the current work, we have proposed a pulse‐driven synaptic ECT for supersensitive and ultrafast biosensors. By pulsing the presynaptic input (drain bias, VD) and setting the modulation potential (gate bias) near transconductance intersection (VG,i), the synaptic ECT‐based pH sensor can achieve a record high sensitivity up to 124 mV pH−1 (almost twice the Nernstian limit, 59.2 mV pH−1) and an ultrafast response time as low as 8.75 ms (7169 times faster than the potentiostatic sensors, 62.73 s). The proposed synaptic sensing strategy can effectively eliminate the transconductance fluctuation issue during the calibration process of the pH sensor and significantly reduce power consumption. Besides, the most sensitive working point at VG,i has been elaborately figured out through a series of detailed mathematical derivations, which is of great significance to provide higher sensitivity with quasi‐nonfluctuating amplification capability. The proposed electrochemical synaptic transistor paired with an optimized operating gate offers a new paradigm for standardizing and commercializing high‐performance biosensors.

Abstract Background Seeking positive and comprehensive rehabilitation methods after stroke is an urgent problem to be solved, which is very important to improve the dysfunction of stroke. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of motor imagery-based brain-computer interface training (MI-BCI) on upper limb function and attention in stroke patients with hemiplegia. Methods Sixty stroke patients with impairment of upper extremity function and decreased attention were randomly assigned to the control group (CR group) or the experimental group (BCI group) in a 1:1 ratio. Patients in the CR group received conventional rehabilitation. Patients in the BCI group received 20 min of MI-BCI training five times a week for 3 weeks (15 sessions) in addition to conventional rehabilitation. The primary outcome measures were the changes in Fugl-Meyer Motor Function Assessment of Upper Extremities (FMA-UE) and Attention Network Test (ANT) from baseline to 3 weeks. Real-time DOA (direction of arrival) estimation of surface or underwater targets is of great significance to the research of marine environment and national security protection. When conducting real-time DOA estimation of underwater targets, it can be difficult to extract the prior characteristics of noise due to the complexity and variability of the marine environment. Therefore, the accuracy of target orientation in the absence of a known noise is significantly reduced, thereby presenting an additional challenge for the DOA estimation of the marine targets in real-time. Aiming at the problem of real-time DOA estimation of acoustic targets in complex environments, this paper applies the MEMS vector hydrophone with a small size and high sensitivity to sense the conditions of the ocean environment and change the structural parameters in the adaptive adjustments system itself to obtain the desired target signal, proposes a signal processing method when the prior characteristics of noise are unknown. Theoretical analysis and experimental verification show that the method can achieve accurate real-time DOA estimation of the target, achieve an error within 3.1° under the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of the X channel of −17 dB, and maintain a stable value when the SNR continues to decrease. The results show that this method has a very broad application prospect in the field of ocean monitoring.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy soil threatens rice growth and food safety, enriching manganese (Mn) in rice seedlings is expected to reduce Cd uptake by rice. The effects of 250 μM Mn-treated seedlings on reducing Cd uptake of four rice genotypes (WYJ21, ZJY1578, HHZ, and HLYSM) planted in 0.61 mg kg−1 Cd-contaminated soil, were studied through the hydroponic and pot experiments. The results showed that the ZJY1578 seedling had the highest Mn level (459 μg plant–1), followed by WYJ21 (309 μg plant–1), and less Mn accumulated in the other genotypes. The relative expression of OsNramp5 (natural resistance-associated macrophage protein) was reduced by 42.7 % in ZJY1578 but increased by 23.3 % in HLYSM. The expressions of OsIRT1 (iron-regulated transporter-like protein) were reduced by 24.0–56.0 % in the four genotypes, with the highest reduction in ZJY1578. Consequently, a greater reduction of Cd occurred in ZJY1578 than that in the other genotypes, i.e., the root and shoot Cd at the tillering were reduced by 27.8 % and 48.5 %, respectively. At the mature stage, total Cd amount and distribution in the shoot and brown rice were also greatly reduced in ZJY1578, but the inhibitory effects were weakened compared to the tillering stage. This study found various responses of Cd uptake and transporters to Mn-treated seedlings among rice genotypes, thus resulting in various Cd reductions. In the future, the microscopic transport processes of Cd within rice should be explored to deeply explain the genotypic variation.

Organic growers of cucurbit (Cucurbitaceae) crops in the midwestern United States have difficulty managing bacterial wilt—a fatal disease with a pathogen (Erwinia tracheiphila) that is transmitted by striped and spotted cucumber beetles (Acalymma vittatum and Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi, respectively). Registered organic insecticides lack effectiveness, and host plant resistance is rare in commercial cultivars of many cucurbit crops. Row covers are widely used as barriers to minimize pest access, but the spunbonded polypropylene fabric covering traditional low tunnels must be removed at bloom to prevent overheating and facilitate pollination, thereby exposing the crop for the rest of the season. “Mesotunnels”—nylon mesh fabric covering 3.5-ft-high hoops—provide more space than low tunnels and mitigate overheating. In field experiments at Iowa State University (Ames, IA, USA) during 2016–18, two variations of mesotunnels—full-season tunnels [with purchased bumble bees (Bombus impatiens) added for pollination] and part-season tunnels (with covers removed for 2 weeks during bloom to provide pollinator access)—were compared with low tunnels and a noncovered treatment for organic ‘Athena’ muskmelon (Cucumis melo) production. Based on scouting results, full-season mesotunnels required no insecticides and part-season mesotunnels averaged 0.6 spray per season compared with 1.0 and 5.0 sprays per season for the low-tunnel and noncovered treatments, respectively. Incidence of pest and disease damage was zero for the full-season mesotunnels, 5% to 22% for the part-season mesotunnels, and 37% to 70% for both of the other treatments. Marketable yield for the full-season mesotunnel treatment exceeded the noncovered treatment significantly each year, and mean marketable yields were greater numerically than for the other treatments. Both mesotunnel treatments had a marketable yield that averaged more than twice that of the noncovered treatment in each year. Economic analysis (partial budget and cost-efficiency ratio) indicated that mesotunnels were likely to be more profitable in Iowa, USA, than either the low-tunnel or noncovered systems, but also that the year-to-year differential among treatments in profitability could be substantial. Additional experiments are needed to evaluate the efficacy of these integrated pest management practices and their profitability at spatial scales representative of commercial farms.

Abstract Background Dog Bone™ button fixation is frequently used to treat acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) dislocation. However, various studies have reported complications after fixation. Objective To investigate the effect of the coracoid bone tunnel location on the treatment of ACJ dislocation through single-tunnel coracoclavicular (CC) ligament fixation with the Dog Bone™ button. Methods Six cadaveric shoulders were used. Each specimen was subjected to five testing conditions in the following order: (1) normal ACJ (Gn); (2) acromioclavicular and CC ligaments were removed (G0); (3) CC ligament reconstruction was performed using the Dog Bone™ technique, and the coracoid bone tunnel was at the center of the coracoid base (G1); (4) reconstruction was performed at 5 mm distal from the G1 site, along the axis of the coracoid (G2); (5) reconstruction was performed at 10 mm distal from the G1 site, along the axis of the coracoid (G3). The angles of pronation and supination of the clavicle under the same load (30 N) were measured. Next, a finite element (FE) model was created using computed tomography (CT) images of the normal shoulder. Model 1 (M1), model 2 (M2), and model 3 (M3) correspond to G1, G2, and G3, respectively. A force of 70 N was applied as a vertical upward load to the distal clavicle. Subsequently, the von Mises stress, the strain LE along the FiberWire, and the displacement nephogram of the three models were obtained. Results After single-tunnel CC ligament fixation using the Dog Bone™ technique, the clavicle in the G2 group (20.50 (19.50, 21.25) °, 20.00 (18.75, 21.25) °) had the best rotational stability. The peak von Mises stress, the strain LE along the FiberWire, and the maximum displacement were smaller in M2 than in M1 and M3. Conclusions When the coracoid bone tunnel was located 5 mm anterior to the center of the coracoid base (along the axis of the coracoid), the clavicle showed greater rotational stability.
