Abstract

The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. The results of such surveys will be presented to the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF) and the Nomenclature Committee

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) performed via a lateral approach as a means of stabilising diaphyseal humeral fractures in dogs and cats. Materials and Methods: Clinical data including surgical technique and implants utilised were recorded. Post-operative humeral length and alignment were compared to the intact contralateral humerus. Post-operative complications, time to union and functional outcomes were recorded. Results: Fractures sustained by seven dogs and four cats were included. A plate-rod construct was used in all fractures. The mean ± SD absolute discrepancies in frontal and sagittal plane alignment were 1.9° ± 1.3° and 4.3° ± 1.5°, respectively. The mean ± SD relative discrepancy in humeral length was 2.7% ± 3.9%. Post-operative complications occurred in four animals, with three of these animals requiring revision procedures. Time to union, as assessed via serial radiographs, was available in six animals; three of these animals had uncomplicated fracture healing, with a mean ± SD time to union of 82 ± 49 days. The remaining three animals, which all underwent revision procedures, had a mean ± SD time to union of 185 ± 93 days. Clinical significance: This case series documents that MIPO performed via a lateral approach consistently yielded acceptable post-operative reduction and alignment of diaphyseal humeral fractures, ascribed in part to the physiologic positioning of the fractured limb during surgery. Abstract

Salinity is one of the major environmental factors limiting plant growth and development. Two cultivars (the native “Gansu,” GS; and the imported “Italian,” IT) of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.) were exposed to two neutral salts (NaCl and Na2SO4) and two alkaline salts (Na2CO3 and NaHCO3) at concentrations ranging from 0-300 mM. After seven days seed germination rates and radicle and hypocotyl lengths were compared. Exposure only to 50 mM neutral salts did not affect significantly relative germination rates compared to control (0 mM). In contrast, higher concentrations of neutral salts and alkaline salts significantly inhibited germination rates and reduced radicle and hypocotyl lengths. Although the two cultivars were visually similar in appearance and had similar patterns in response to saline and alkaline stresses, GS had relatively higher threshold germination concentration compared to IT, and the radicles and hypocotyls of seedlings grown under NaCl and Na2SO4 were longer than for IT, indicating that GS is more salt-tolerant. Under neutral salt stress, the recovery germination percentage increased with higher salt concentration. However, under alkaline salt stress, the recovery germination percentage sharply decreased with increasing salt concentration. These results suggest that the damage caused by alkaline salts is more severe than those caused by neutral salts. Abstract

Resistance saturation as a function of current density, stripe length, stripe width, and temperature is investigated for a two-level structure with Ti/AlCu/Ti/TiN stripes and interlevel W stud vias. A simple model based on first principles is presented, which relates the maximum fractional resistance change to the current density and stripe length. Experimental results for stripe lengths of 30, 50, 70, and 100 μm are in good agreement with the model predictions. Estimated void sizes based on the resistance saturation data are consistent with the actual void sizes determined from scanning electron microscopy analysis. A weak temperature dependence is found for 0.33 μm-wide samples in the range 170–250°C, while a strong width dependence is observed between 0.33 and 1.50 μm- wide samples. The width dependence is qualitatively explained in terms of a relaxed bulk modulus that depends on the aspect ratio of the interconnect lines. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

In view of the nature of heterogeneous reaction of many materials processes, great attention has been paid to the reaction interfaces. Very often, the interfacial tension is given the foremost importance in the study of interfaces in general and slag-metal reactions in particular. As an example, the dependence of entrainment of ladle slag into liquid steel on interfacial tension has been the topic of many researchers. In the present work, the interface between liquid silicon and CaO-SiO2 slag and the interfacial reaction between silicon and graphite were studied experimentally to gain an insight into the impacts of chemical driving force and interfacial tension on the interfacial phenomena. The results strongly suggested that the chemical driving force could play dominating role in determining the interface, while the interfacial tension would only become important when the slag and metal were reaching equilibrium. Based on the experimental findings, the kinetics of the slag-metal reaction was discussed. Also, the possibility of the entrainment of ladle slag as a source of nonmetallic inclusions was evaluated. Abstract

Abstract: Aims: Previous research demonstrated that applying Bacillus amyloliquefaciens to cotton seeds promotes growth, alters root architecture and alleviates salt stress of cotton seedlings. This research was undertaken to further study the genetic responses elicited in cotton seedlings by this growth promoting bacterium. Methods and Results: GeneChip microarrays and RT‐qPCR were used to detect changes in gene expression in seedling roots inoculated with B. amyloliquefaciens. Roots were stained with 3′3‐diaminobenzidine and phloroglucinol‐HCl to determine whether treated seedlings had a greater accumulation of reactive oxygen species and lignin. Two hundred and fifty‐two transcripts were differentially expressed in inoculated cotton seedling roots; 139 transcripts were up‐regulated and 113 were down‐regulated. Some up‐regulated transcripts were related to nitrate assimilation, cell growth, hormones, transport, transcription factors and antioxidants. Five genes identified to be up‐regulated using microarrays were determined to be up‐regulated using RT‐qPCR. Inoculated cotton seedling roots had a greater accumulation of reactive oxygen species and lignin. Conclusions: The differential expression of genes associated with diverse functions supports that B. amyloliquefaciens elicits a complex genetic response in seedling roots. Abstract

The solubility of nitrogen in ladle slag was determined at 1873K under controlled nitrogen and oxygen potentials. Gas- slag equilibrium experiments were conducted using molybdenum and graphite crucibles. In the absence of carbon, the nitrogen solubility was very low. The presence of carbon greatly increased the nitrogen solubility in the slag. Low levels of cyanide was detected by wet chemistry, with considerable uncertainty. Cyanide was ruled out as the main reason for the large increase of nitrogen in the presence of pure carbon. Abstract

Abstract: Aims: This study was conducted to investigate indigenous seed endophyte effects on browntop millet seedling development. We report that seed‐inhabiting bacterial endophytes are responsible for promoting seedling development, including stimulation of root hair formation, increasing root and shoot length growth and increasing photosynthetic pigment content of seedlings. Bacterial endophytes also improved resistance of seedlings to disease. Methods and Results: A total of four endophytic bacteria were isolated from surface‐sterilized seeds and identified by 16S rDNA sequencing as Curtobacterium sp. (M1), Microbacterium sp. (M2), Methylobacterium sp. (M3) and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (M4). Removal of bacteria with streptomycin treatment from the seeds compromised seedling growth and development. When endophytes were reinoculated onto seeds, seedlings recovered normal development. Strains M3 and M4 were found to be most potent in promoting growth of seedlings. Bacteria were found to produce auxin, solubilize phosphate and inhibit fungal pathogens. Significant protection of seedlings from Fusarium infection was found using strain M4 in microcosm assays. The antifungal lipopeptide genes for surfactin and iturin were detected in M4; culture extracts of M4 showed a positive drop collapse result for surfactins. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that browntop millet seeds vector indigenous endophytes that are responsible for modulation of seedling development and protection of seedlings from fungal disease. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study is significant and original in that it is the first report of seed‐inhabiting endophytes of browntop millet that influence seedling development and function in defence against soilborne pathogens. 41. Aeroelastic behavior of low aspect ratio metal and composite blades

Abstract

The aeroelastic stability of titanium and composite blades of low aspect ratio is examined over a range of design parameters, using a Rayleigh-Ritz formulation. The blade modes include a plate-type mode to account for chordwise bending. Chordwise flexibility is found to have a significant effect on the unstalled supersonic flutter of low aspect ratio blades, and also on the stability of tip sections of shrouded fan blades. For blades with a thickness of less than approximately four percent of chord, the chordwise, second bending, and first torsion branches are all unstable at moderately high supersonic Mach numbers. For composite blades, the important structural coupling between bending and torsion cannot be modeled properly unless chordwise bending is accounted for. Typically, aft fiber sweep produces beneficial bending-torsion coupling that is stabilizing, whereas forward fiber sweep has the opposite effect. By using crossed-ply laminate configurations, critical aeroelastic modes can be stabilized.
