We determine the hydrodynamic modes of the superfluid analog of a smectic-A phase in liquid crystals, i.e., a state in which both gauge invariance and translational invariance along a single direction are spontaneously broken. Such a superfluid smectic provides an idealized description of the incommensurate supersolid state realized in Bose-Einstein condensates with strong dipolar interactions as well as of the stripe phase in Bose gases with spin-orbit coupling. We show that the presence of a finite normal fluid density in the ground state of these systems gives rise to a well-defined second-sound type mode even at zero temperature. It replaces the diffusive permeation mode of a normal smectic phase and is directly connected with the classic description of supersolids by Andreev and Lifshitz in terms of a propagating defect mode. An analytic expression is derived for the two sound velocities that appear in the longitudinal excitation spectrum. It only depends on the low-energy parameters associated with the two independent broken symmetries, which are the effective layer compression modulus and the superfluid fraction., 20 pages

We establish that two-dimensional dipolar quantum gases admit a universal description, i.e., their thermodynamic properties are independent of details of the interaction at short distances. The only relevant parameters are the dipole length as well as the scattering length of the combined short-range plus dipolar interaction potential. We derive adiabatic relations that link the change in the thermodynamic potentials with respect to the scattering length and the dipole length to a generalized Tan contact parameter and a new dipolar contact, which involves an integral of a short-distance regularized pair distribution function. These two quantities determine the scale anomaly in the difference between pressure and energy density and also the internal energy in the presence of a harmonic confinement. For a weak transverse confinement, configurations with attractive interactions appear, which lead to a density-wave instability beyond a critical strength of the dipolar interaction. We show that this instability essentially coincides with the onset of a roton minimum in the excitation spectrum and may be understood in terms of a quantum analog of the Hansen-Verlet criterion for freezing of a classical fluid., 17 pages, 6 figures

Strongly correlated systems are often associated with an underlying quantum critical point which governs their behavior in the finite temperature phase diagram. Their thermodynamical and transport properties arise from critical fluctuations and follow universal scaling laws. Here, we develop a microscopic theory of thermal transport in the quantum critical regime expressed in terms of a thermal sum rule and an effective scattering time. We explicitly compute the characteristic scaling functions in a quantum critical model system, the unitary Fermi gas. Moreover, we derive an exact thermal sum rule for heat and energy currents and evaluate it numerically using the nonperturbative Luttinger-Ward approach. For the thermal scattering times we find a simple quantum critical scaling form. Together, the sum rule and the scattering time determine the heat conductivity, thermal diffusivity, Prandtl number and sound diffusivity from high temperatures down into the quantum critical regime. A gas junction In superconductors, electrons form a macroscopic wave function that has a definite phase. If two superconductors with different wave function phases are placed in contact with each other through an insulating link, a current will flow through this so-called Josephson's junction without any external voltage. Luick et al. and Kwon et al. observed an analogous phenomenon in a setup that involved two reservoirs of superfluid Fermi gases. Both groups measured the so-called current-phase relation: the dependence of the magnitude of the current on the relative phase. By tuning an external magnetic field, they were able to study how the interactions between fermions affected the nature of the superfluid state. Science , this issue p. 89 , p. 84

We develop a microscopic model to describe the Josephson dynamics between two superfluid reservoirs of ultracold fermionic atoms which accounts for the dependence of the critical current on both the barrier height and the interaction strength along the crossover from BCS to BEC. Building on a previous study [F. Meier & W. Zwerger, Phys. Rev. A, 64 033610 (2001)] of weakly-interacting bosons, we derive analytic results for the Josephson critical current at zero temperature for homogeneous and trapped systems at arbitrary coupling. The critical current exhibits a maximum near the unitarity limit which arises from the competition between the increasing condensate fraction and a decrease of the chemical potential along the evolution from the BCS to the BEC limit. An open resonator fabricated in a two-dimensional electron gas is used to explore the transition from strongly invasive scanning gate microscopy to the perturbative regime of weak tip-induced potentials. With the help of numerical simulations that faithfully reproduce the main experimental findings, we quantify the extent of the perturbative regime in which the tip-induced conductance change is unambiguously determined by properties of the unperturbed system. The correspondence between the experimental and numerical results is established by analyzing the characteristic length scale and the amplitude modulation of the conductance change. In the perturbative regime, the former is shown to assume a disorder-dependent maximum value, while the latter linearly increases with the strength of a weak tip potential., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We discuss the quantum phase transition from a liquid to a gaseous ground state in a Bose fluid with increasing strength of the zero point motion. It is shown that in the zero pressure limit, the two different ground states are separated by a quantum tricritical point whose position is determined by a vanishing two-body scattering length. In the presence of a finite three-body scattering amplitude, the superfluid gas at this point exhibits sound modes whose velocity scales linearly with density while the compressibility diverges $\sim p^{-1/3}$ in the limit of vanishing pressure $p$. In the liquid regime of negative scattering lengths, it is shown that $N$-body bound states exist up to arbitrary $N$, consistent with a theorem by Seiringer. The asymptotic scaling $a_{-}(N)\sim N^{-1/2}$ of the scattering lengths where they appear from the continuum is determined from a finite size scaling analysis in the vicinity of the quantum tricritical point. We calculate the spectrum of three-body Efimov bound states near a Feshbach resonance within a model which accounts both for the finite range of interactions and the presence of background scattering. The latter may be due to direct interactions in an open channel or a second overlapping Feshbach resonance. It is found that background scattering gives rise to substantial changes in the trimer spectrum as a function of the detuning away from a Feshbach resonance, in particular in the regime where the background channel supports Efimov states on its own. Compared to the situation with negligible background scattering, the regime where van der Waals universality applies is shifted to larger values of the resonance strength if the background scattering length is positive. For negative background scattering lengths, in turn, van der Waals universality extends to even small values of the resonance strength parameter, consistent with experimental results on Efimov states in $^{39}$K. Within a simple model, we show that short-range three-body forces do not affect van der Waals universality significantly. Repulsive three-body forces may, however, explain the observed variation between around $-8$ and $-10$ of the ratio between the scattering length where the first Efimov trimer appears and the van der Waals length., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures; final version as published

We discuss the phase diagram and the universal scaling functions of attractive Fermi gases at finite imbalance. The existence of a quantum multicritical point for the unitary gas at vanishing chemical potential $\mu$ and effective magnetic field $h$, first discussed by Nikoli\'{c} and Sachdev, gives rise to three different phase diagrams, depending on whether the inverse scattering length $1/a$ is negative, positive or zero. Within a Luttinger-Ward formalism, the phase diagram and pressure of the unitary gas is calculated as a function of the dimensionless scaling variables $T/\mu$ and $h/\mu$. We discuss Bragg scattering on both Bose and Fermi gases with strong short-range interactions in the deep inelastic regime of large wave vector transfer q, where the dynamic structure factor is dominated by a resonance near the free-particle energy ℏω=ϵq=ℏ2q2/2m. Using a systematic short-distance expansion, the structure factor at high momentum is shown to exhibit a nontrivial dependence on frequency characterized by two separate scaling regimes. First, for frequencies that differ from the single-particle energy by terms of order O(q) (i.e., small deviations compared to the single-particle energy), the dynamic structure factor is described by the impulse approximation of Hohenberg and Platzman. Second, deviations of order O(q2) (i.e., of the same order or larger than the single-particle energy) are described by the operator product expansion, with a universal crossover connecting both regimes. The scaling is consistent with the leading asymptotics for a number of sum rules in the large momentum limit. Furthermore, we derive an exact expression for the shift and width of the single-particle peak at large momentum due to interactions, thus extending a result by Beliaev [J. Exp. Theor. Phys. 7, 299 (1958)] for the low-density Bose gas to arbitrary values of the scattering length a. The shift exhibits a maximum around qa≃1, which is connected with a maximum in the static structure factor due to strong short-range correlations. For Bose gases with moderate interaction strengths, the theoretically predicted shift is consistent with the value observed by Papp et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 135301 (2008)]. Finally, we develop a diagrammatic theory for the dynamic structure factor which accounts for the correlations beyond Bogoliubov theory. Increasing the spin imbalance in superconductors can spatially modulate the gap by forming Cooper pairs with finite momentum. For large imbalances compared to the Fermi energy, the inhomogeneous FFLO superconductor ultimately becomes a normal metal. There is mounting experimental evidence for this scenario in 2D organic superconductors in large in-plane magnetic fields; this is complemented by ongoing efforts to realize this scenario in coupled tubes of atomic Fermi gases with spin imbalance. Yet, a theory for the phase transition from a metal to an FFLO superconductor has not been developed so far and the universality class has remained unknown. Here we propose and analyze a spin imbalance driven quantum critical point between a 2D metal and an FFLO phase in anisotropic electron systems. We derive the effective action for electrons and bosonic FFLO pairs at this quantum phase transition. Using this action, we predict non-Fermi liquid behavior and the absence of quasi-particles at a discrete set of hot spots on the Fermi surfaces. This results in strange power-laws in thermodynamics and response functions, which are testable with existing experimental set-ups on 2D organic superconductors and may also serve as signatures of the elusive FFLO phase itself. The proposed universality class is distinct from previously known quantum critical metals and, because its critical fluctuations appear already in the pairing channel, a promising candidate for naked metallic quantum criticality over extended temperature ranges., Comment: 3+1 figures

We study the transition to fermion pair superfluidity in a mixture of interacting bosonic and fermionic atoms. The fermion interaction induced by the bosons and the dynamical screening of the condensate phonons due to fermions are included using the nonperturbative Hamiltonian flow equations. This article reviews recent experimental and theoretical progress on many-body phenomena in dilute, ultracold gases. Its focus are effects beyond standard weak-coupling descriptions, like the Mott-Hubbard-transition in optical lattices, strongly interacting gases in one and two dimensions or lowest Landau level physics in quasi two-dimensional gases in fast rotation. We present a theory for Raman scattering on 2D quantum antiferromagnets. The microscopic Fleury-Loudon Hamiltonian is expressed in terms of an effective $O(3)$ - model. Well within the N\'eel ordered phase, the Raman spectrum contains a two-magnon and a two-Higgs contribution, which are calculated diagramatically. The vertex functions for both the Higgs and magnon contributions are determined from a numerical solution of the corresponding Bethe-Salpeter equation. Due to the momentum dependence of the Raman vertex in the relevant $B_{1g}+E_{2g}$ symmetry, the contribution from the Higgs mode is strongly suppressed. Except for intermediate values of the Higgs mass, it does not show up as separate peak in the spectrum but gives rise to a broad continuum above the dominant contribution from two-magnon excitations. The latter give rise to a broad, asymmetric peak at $\omega\simeq 2.44\, J$, which is a result of magnon-magnon interactions mediated by the Higgs mode. The full Raman spectrum is determined completely by the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling $J$ and a dimensionless Higgs mass. Experimental Raman spectra of undoped cuprates turn out to be in very good agreement with the theory only with inclusion of the Higgs contribution. They thus provide a clear signature of the presence of a Higgs mode in spin one-half 2D quantum antiferromagnets., Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures

We investigate quantum effects in the mechanical properties of elastic beams on the nanoscale. Transverse quantum and thermal fluctuations and the nonlinear excitation energies are calculated for beams compressed in longitudinal direction. Near the Euler instability, the system is described by a one dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model where the order parameter is the amplitude of the buckling mode. We show that in single wall carbon nanotubes with lengths of order or smaller than 100 nm zero point fluctuations are accessible and discuss the possibility of observing macroscopic quantum coherence in nanobeams near the critical strain., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, uses epl.cls, submitted to Europhysics Letters, revised version

We discuss the superfluid (SF) to Mott-insulator transition of cold atoms in optical lattices recently observed by Greiner et al (2002 Nature 415 39). The fundamental properties of both phases and their experimental signatures ar ed iscussed carefully, including the limitations of the standard Gutzwiller approximation. It is shown that in a one-dimensional dilute Bose-gas with a strong transverse confinement (Tonks-gas), even an arbitrary weak optical lattice is able to induce a Mott-like state with crystalline order, provided the dimensionless interactio np arameter is larger than a critical value of order one. The SF–insulator transition of the Bose–Hubbard model in this case continuously evolves into a transition of the commensurate–incommensurate type with decreasing strength of the external optical lattice.

We discuss the properties of quasi-1D quantum gases of fermionic atoms using the Luttinger liquid theory, including the presence of an optical lattice and of a longitudinal trapping potential. We analyze in particular the nature and manifestations of spin-charge separation, where in the case of atoms ``spin'' and ``charge'' refers to two internal atomic states and the atomic mass density, respectively.

We study the detection of a BCS transition within a sample of Lithium--6 atoms confined in a harmonic trap. Using the local density approximation we calculate the pair correlation function in the normal and superfluid state at zero temperature. We show that the softening of the Fermi hole associated with a BCS transition leads to an observable increase in the intensity of off--resonant light scattered from the atomic cloud at small angles., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Europhysics Letters

Ferromagnets, such as those made of iron or nickel, are called itinerant because the electrons whose spins aligned to create the magnetic state are extended and are the same as the ones responsible for conduction. Ferromagnetism was a mystery for classical physics, and its explanation in terms of spin, exchange interactions, and repulsions between identical particles was a triumph of early quantum mechanics. However, it proved difficult to apply these early models to real ferromagnets in a quantitative way, both because the simple models neglect important features relevant in real materials and because theoretical tools to properly treat the strong correlation problem have only recently been developed. Fortunately, the simple models studied in the early days of quantum mechanics can also be applied to fermions other than electrons. On page 1521 of this issue, Jo et al. ( 1 ) provide evidence for an analog of ferromagnetism in an ultracold gas of neutral lithium-6 atoms. When repulsive interactions between these freely moving particles are sufficiently strong, a transition to ferromagnetic ordering is seen.

Using Griffiths and Lieb-Simon type inequalities, it is shown that the two-point function of ferromagnetic spin models with N components in one dimension decays like the interaction provided that N=1,2,3,4 and T > T_c.

The standard assumption in thermodynamics that a sufficiently slow change of external parameters will generate no entropy turns out to be wrong for low-dimensional, gapless systems. Its breakdown may be tested with ultracold gases.

We consider Fermions in two dimensions with an attractive interaction in the singlet d-wave channel of arbitrary strength. By means of a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation a statistical Ginzburg-Landau theory is derived, which describes the smooth crossover from a weak-coupling BCS superconductor to a condensate of composite Bosons. Adjusting the interaction strength to the observed slope of H_c2 at T_c in the optimally doped high-T_c compounds YBCO and BSCCO, we determine the associated values of the Ginzburg-Landau correlation length xi and the London penetration depth lambda. The resulting dimensionless ratio k_F xi(0) approx 5-8 and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa=lambda xi approx 90-100 agree well with the experimentally observed values. We calculate the average number of electrons on a metallic single-electron-box as a function of the gate voltage for arbitrary values of the tunneling conductance. In the vicinity of the plateaus the problem is equivalent to calculating the helicity modulus of a classical inverse square XY-model in one dimension. By a combination of perturbation theory, a two-loop renormalization group calculation and a Monte-Carlo simulation in the intermediate regime we provide a complete description of the smearing of the Coulomb staircase at zero temperature with increasing conductance., Comment: 4 pages revtex, 1 eps figure

It is shown that the Mott insulating and superfluid phases of bosons in an optical lattice may be distinguished by a non-local 'parity order parameter' which is directly accessible via single site resolution imaging. In one dimension, the lattice Bose model is dual to a classical interface roughening problem. We use known exact results from the latter to prove that the parity order parameter exhibits long range order in the Mott insulating phase, consistent with recent experiments by Endres et al. [Science 334, 200 (2011)]. In two spatial dimensions, the parity order parameter can be expressed in terms of an equal time Wilson loop of a non-trivial U(1) gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions which exhibits a transition between a Coulomb and a confining phase. The negative logarithm of the parity order parameter obeys a perimeter law in the Mott insulator and is enhanced by a logarithmic factor in the superfluid., Comment: published version

We use the operator product expansion to derive exact results for the momentum distribution and the static structure factor at high momentum for a jellium model of electrons in both two and three dimensions. It is shown that independent of the precise state of the Coulomb system and for arbitrary temperatures, the asymptotic behavior is a power law in the momentum, whose strength is determined by the contact value of the pair distribution function $g(0)$. The power-law tails are quantum effects which vanish in the classical limit $\hbar \to 0$. We provide an exact solution for the interplay between Bose-Einstein condensation and the Dicke-Hepp-Lieb self-organization transition of an ideal Bose gas trapped inside a single-mode optical cavity and subject to a transverse laser drive. Based on an effective action approach, we determine the full phase diagram at arbitrary temperature, which features a bi-critical point where the transitions cross. We calculate the dynamically generated band structure of the atoms and the associated supression of the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation in the phase with a spontaneous periodic density modulation. Moreover, we determine the evolution of the polariton spectrum due to the coupling of the cavity photons and the atomic field near the self-organization transition, which is quite different above or below the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature. At low temperatures, the critical value of the Dicke-Hepp-Lieb transition decreases with temperature and thus thermal fluctuations can enhance the tendency to a periodic arrangement of the atoms., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

We propose a framework for inducing strong optomechanical effects in a suspended carbon nanotube based on deformation potential (DP) exciton–phonon coupling. The excitons are confined using an inhomogeneous axial electric field which generates optically active quantum dots with a level spacing in the milli-electronvolt range and a characteristic size in the 10 nm range. A transverse field induces a tunable parametric coupling between the quantum dot and the flexural modes of the nanotube mediated by electron–phonon interactions. We derive the corresponding excitonic DPs and show that this interaction enables efficient optical ground-state cooling of the fundamental mode and could allow us to realize the strong and ultra-strong coupling regimes of the Jaynes–Cummings and Rabi models., New Journal of Physics, 14, ISSN:1367-2630

We consider mesoscopic fluctuations of the dipole moment and the electric polarizability of a disordered thin film in the diffusive regime. It is shown, that the requirement of a fixed particle number is crucial for obtaining finite fluctuations at low temperatures. For systems with sufficient disorder and a long screening length a spontaneous dipole moment should be observable with an atomic force microscope.

We derive universal relations for the radio-frequency (rf) spectroscopy of a two-dimensional Fermi gas consisting of two spin states with a resonant S-wave interaction. The rf transition rate has a high-frequency tail that is proportional to the contact and displays logarithmic scaling violations, decreasing asymptotically like $1/(\omega^2 \ln^2 \omega)$. Its coefficient is proportional to $\ln^2(a_{2D}'/a_{2D})$, where $a_{2D}$ and $a_{2D}'$ are the 2-dimensional scattering lengths associated with initial-state and final-state interactions. The clock shift is proportional to the contact and to $\ln(a_{2D}'/a_{2D})$. If $|\ln(a_{2D}'/a_{2D})| \gg 1$, the clock shift arises as a cancellation between much larger contributions proportional to $\ln^2(a_{2D}'/a_{2D})$ from bound-bound and bound-free rf transitions., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

Recent experiments have demonstrated that the numbern of additional electrons on a small metallic island is a staircase function of a continuous external chargenx for temperaturesT small compared to the single electron charging energyU. We show that the finite conductanceg of the tunnel barrier connecting the island to the external gate gives rise to quantum fluctuations inn which lead to a smearing of the staircase even at zero temperature. In the experimentally relevant case of wide junctions and in the limit of small conductanceg≪1 the slope ∂ /∂nx at the turning point between two plateaus saturates at a finite value of order 1/g asT→0 instead of diverging likeU/T as predicted with thermal fluctuations only. The experimentally observed broadening however is still much larger which is probably due to extrinsic effects.

We study the conductance of a single particle on a ring subject to an arbitrary dc electric field, which is generated by a linearly in time increasing magnetic flux. The full quantum mechanical time development is calculated numerically by splitting the dynamics into independent consecutive Zener tunneling transitions and free motion on the ring. The Zener transitions occur near the avoided crossings of the bandstructure which arises from the adiabatic eigenstates as a function of flux in the presence of a static scattering potential. To account for the necessary dissipation the particle is coupled to an appropriate oscillator bath which is adjusted to give a strictly linear current-voltage characteristic for arbitrary voltage and temperature in the absence of scattering. Taking a single δ-function scatterer we find that the dissipative coupling eliminates the localization in energy space found previously and leads to a well defined resistive steady state. The scattering introduces reproducible fluctuations around the average Ohmic behavior which are caused by coherent backscattering. Their magnitude depends on the strength of the scattering potential and decays slowly for large voltages. The associated correlation energy is determined by the uncertainty of the eigenstates due to the dissipative bath coupling. Thermal averaging leads to a decrease of the conductance fluctuations proportional to T−1.

There has been great excitement about the recent experimental and theoretical progress in elucidating the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover in ultracold Fermi gases. Prior to these cold atom experiments, all known, and reasonably well understood, superconductors and superfluids were firmly in one of the two limits. Either they were well described by the celebrated BCS theory of pairing in Fermi systems, or they could be understood in terms of the BEC of bosons, with repulsive interactions. For the first time, the ultracold Fermi gases exhibited behavior that, with the turn of a knob, could be made to span the entire range from BCS to BEC. While such a crossover had been theoretically predicted, its actual realization in the laboratory was a major advance [1, 2], and led to intense investigation of the properties of the very strongly interacting, unitary regime that lies right in the middle of the crossover. We now understand that the unitary Fermi gas has remarkable universal properties, arising from scale invariance, and has connections with fields as diverse as nuclear physics and string theory.

In this chapter we discuss the BCS–BEC crossover in one-dimensional Fermi gases. We present exact results using the Bethe Ansatz as well as numerical calculations of the correlation functions and the complete phase diagram. In a balanced gas, a continuous crossover occurs from a BCS-type fermionic superfluid to a BEC of pairs that are described by the Lieb-Liniger model. In the case of a finite imbalance, superfluidity persists in the form of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state with finite-momentum pairs on the weak coupling side. For strong attractive interactions, it is replaced by a Bose-Fermi mixture. The perspectives to observe an FFLO-state with ultracold fermions in a harmonic trap are discussed.

We discuss quantum fluctuations of the interface between a superfluid and a Mott-insulating state of ultracold atoms in a trap. The fluctuations of the boundary are due to a new type of surface modes, whose spectrum is similar (but not identical) to classical capillary waves. The corresponding quantum capillary length sets the scale for the penetration of the superfluid into the Mott-insulating regime by the proximity effect and may be on the order of several lattice spacings. It determines the typical magnitude of the interface width due to quantum fluctuations, which may be inferred from single site imaging of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice., published version + two additional references

We derive exact relations that connect the universal $C/k^4$-decay of the momentum distribution at large $k$ with both thermodynamic properties and correlation functions of two-component Fermi gases in one dimension with contact interactions. The relations are analogous to those obtained by Tan in the three-dimensional case and are derived from an operator product expansion of the one- and two-particle density matrix. They extend earlier results by Olshanii and Dunjko [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 090401 (2003)] for the bosonic Lieb-Liniger gas. As an application, we calculate the pair distribution function at short distances and the dimensionless contact in the limit of infinite repulsion. The ground state energy approaches a universal constant in this limit, a behavior that also holds in the three-dimensional case. We realize and study a strongly interacting two-component atomic Fermi gas confined to two dimensions in an optical lattice. Using radio-frequency spectroscopy we measure the interaction energy of the strongly interacting gas. We observe the confinement-induced Feshbach resonance and find the existence of confinement-induced molecules in very good agreement with theoretical predictions., 4 pages, 4 figures

We show that the visibility in interference experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates is directly related to the condensate fraction. The probability distribution of the contrast over many runs of an interference experiment thus gives the full counting statistics of the condensed atom number. For two-dimensional Bose gases, we discuss the universal behavior of the probability distribution in the superfluid regime and provide analytical expressions for the distributions for both homogeneous and harmonically trapped samples. They are non-Gaussian and unimodal with a variance that is directly related to the superfluid density. In general, the visibility is a self-averaging observable only in the presence of long range phase coherence. Close to the transition temperature, the visibility distribution reflects the universal order parameter distribution in the vicinity of the critical point.

We compute the shear viscosity of the unitary Fermi gas above the superfluid transition temperature, using a diagrammatic technique that starts from the exact Kubo formula. The formalism obeys a Ward identity associated with scale invariance which guarantees that the bulk viscosity vanishes identically. For the shear viscosity, vertex corrections and the associated Aslamazov-Larkin contributions are shown to be crucial to reproduce the full Boltzmann equation result in the high-temperature, low fugacity limit. The frequency dependent shear viscosity $\eta(\omega)$ exhibits a Drude-like transport peak and a power-law tail at large frequencies which is proportional to the Tan contact. The weight in the transport peak is given by the equilibrium pressure, in agreement with a sum rule due to Taylor and Randeria. Near the superfluid transition the peak width is of the order of $0.5 T_F$, thus invalidating a quasiparticle description. The ratio $\eta/s$ between the static shear viscosity and the entropy density exhibits a minimum near the superfluid transition temperature whose value is larger than the string theory bound $\hbar/(4\pi k_B)$ by a factor of about seven., Comment: 34 pages, 9 figures; final form (contains new derivation of sum rule), accepted for publication in Annals of Physics

We present a numerical study of the one-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover of a spin-imbalanced Fermi gas. The crossover is described by the Bose-Fermi resonance model in a real space representation. Our main interest is in the behavior of the pair correlations, which, in the BCS limit, are of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type, while in the Bose-Einstein condensate limit, a superfluid of diatomic molecules forms that exhibits quasi-condensation at zero momentum. We use the density matrix renormalization group method to compute the phase diagram as a function of the detuning of the molecular level and the polarization. As a main result, we show that FFLO-like correlations disappear well below full polarization close to the resonance. The critical polarization depends on both the detuning and the filling.

Starting from a model of free Fermions in two dimensions with an arbitrary strong effective interaction, we derive a Ginzburg-Landau theory describing the crossover from BCS-superconductivity to Bose-condensation. We find a smooth crossover from the standard BCS-limit to a Gross-Pitaevski type equation for the order parameter in a Bose superfluid. The mean field transition temperature exhibits a maximum at a coupling strength, where the behaviour crosses over from BCS to Bose like with corres- ponding values of 2A,/Tc = 5 which are characteristic for high Tc superconductors.

We present a calculation of the spectral functions and the associated rf response of ultracold fermionic atoms near a Feshbach resonance. The single particle spectra are peaked at energies that can be modeled by a modified BCS dispersion. However, even at very low temperatures their width is comparable to their energy, except for a small region around the dispersion minimum. The structure of the excitation spectrum of the unitary gas at infinite scattering length agrees with recent momentum-resolved rf spectra near the critical temperature. A detailed comparison is made with momentum integrated, locally resolved rf spectra of the unitary gas at arbitrary temperatures and shows very good agreement between theory and experiment. The pair size defined from the width of these spectra is found to coincide with that obtained from the leading gradient corrections to the effective field theory of the superfluid., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, revtex 4, references updated
