A modern cold triple-axis spectrometer to study quantum condensed matter systems is planned for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Here, we describe the conceptual principles and design of a secondary spectrometer using a multiplexed, prismatic analyzer system relying on graphite crystals and inspired by the successful implementation of the Continuous Angle Multiple Energy Analysis (CAMEA) spectrometers at the Paul Scherrer Institute. This project is currently known as MANTA for Multi-analyzer Neutron Triple-Axis. We report Monte-Carlo ray-tracing simulations on a simple but realistic sample scattering kernel to further illustrate the prismatic analyzer concept's workings, calibration, and performance. Then, we introduce a new statistical analysis approach based on the prismatic analyzer concept to improve the number of final energies measured on the spectrometer. This manuscript outlines a concept that would leverage the existing proton accelerator at the Spallation Neutron Source of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to enable transformative science via one world-class facility serving two missions: Single Event Effects (SEE) and Muon Spectroscopy ($\mu$SR). The $\mu$SR portion would deliver the world's highest flux and highest resolution pulsed muon beams for materials characterization purposes, with precision and capabilities well beyond comparable facilities. The SEE capabilities deliver neutron, proton and muon beams for aerospace industries that are facing an impending challenge to certify equipment for safe and reliable behavior under bombardment from atmospheric radiation originating from cosmic and solar rays. With negligible impact on the primary neutron scattering mission of the SNS, the proposed facility will have enormous benefit for science and industry alike. Quantum magnets admit more than one classical limit and $N$-level systems with strong single-ion anisotropy are expected to be described by a classical approximation based on SU($N$) coherent states. Here we test this hypothesis by modeling finite temperature inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data of the effective spin-one antiferromagnet \bfso{}. The measured dynamic structure factor is calculated with a generalized Landau-Lifshitz dynamics for SU($3$) spins. Unlike the traditional classical limit based on SU($2$) coherent states, the results obtained with classical SU($3$) spins are in good agreement with the measured temperature-dependent spectrum. The SU($3$) approach developed here provides a general framework to understand the broad class of materials comprising weakly coupled antiferromagnetic dimers, trimers, or tetramers, and magnets with strong single-ion anisotropy., Comment: 8 pages 4 figures

A quantum critical point in the single layer, hole-doped cuprate system La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (Nd-LSCO), near $x$ = 0.23 has been proposed as an organizing principle for understanding high temperature superconductivity. Our earlier neutron diffraction work on Nd-LSCO at optimal and high doping revealed static parallel spin stripes to exist out to the QCP and slightly beyond, at $x$ = 0.24 and 0.26. We examine more closely the parallel spin stripe order parameter in Nd-LSCO in both zero magnetic field and fields up to 8 T for H // c in these single crystals. In contrast to earlier studies at lower doping, we observe that H //c in excess of $\sim$ 2.5 T eliminates the incommensurate quasi-Bragg peaks associated with parallel spin stripes. But this elastic scattering is not destroyed by the field; rather it is transferred to commensurate {\textbf{Q} = 0} Bragg positions, implying that the spins participating in the spin stripes have been polarized. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements at high fields show an increase in the low energy, parallel spin stripe fluctuations and evidence for a spin gap, $\Delta_{spin}$= 3 $\pm$ 0.5 meV for Nd-LSCO with $x$ = 0.24. This is shown to be consistent with spin gap measurements as a function of superconducting T$_C$ over five different families of cuprate superconductors, which follow the approximate linear relation, $\Delta_{spin}$ = 3.5 k$_B$T$_C$.

For topological magnon spectra, determining and explaining the presence of a gap at a magnon crossing point is a key to characterize the topological properties of the system. An inelastic neutron scattering study of a single crystal is a powerful experimental technique that is widely employed to probe the magnetic excitation spectra of topological materials. Here, we show that when the scattering intensity rapidly disperses in the vicinity of a crossing point, such as a Dirac point, the apparent topological gap size is extremely sensitive to experimental conditions including sample mosaic, resolution, and momentum integration range. We demonstrate these effects using comprehensive neutron-scattering measurements of CrCl$_3$. Our measurements confirm the gapless nature of the Dirac magnon in CrCl$_3$, but also reveal an artificial, i.e. extrinsic, magnon gap unless the momentum integration range is carefully controlled. Our study provides an explanation of the apparent discrepancies between spectroscopic and first-principles estimates of Dirac magnon gap sizes, and provides guidelines for accurate spectroscopic measurement of topological magnon gaps., Comment: 6 pages and 4 figures

Fe3-xGeTe2 is a layered magnetic van der Waals material of interest for both fundamental and applied research. Despite the observation of intriguing physical properties, open questions exist even on the basic features related to magnetism: is it a simple ferromagnet or are there antiferromagnetic regimes and are the moments local or itinerant. Here, we demonstrate that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations coexist with the ferromagnetism through comprehensive elastic and inelastic neutron scattering and thermodynamic measurements. Our realistic dynamical mean-field theory calculations reveal that the competing magnetic fluctuations are driven by an orbital selective Mott transition, where only the plane-perpendicular a1g orbital of the Fe(3d) manifold remains itinerant. Our results highlight the multi-orbital character in Fe3-xGeTe2 that supports a rare coexistence of local and itinerant physics within this material., Comment: 16 pages, 3 main figures

The workshop titled "US Muon Workshop 2021: A road map for a future Muon Facility" was held virtually on February 1-2, 2021. The workshop aimed to bring together world experts in muon spectroscopy ($\mu$SR) and other techniques along with interested stakeholders to evaluate the scientific need to construct a new $\mu$SR facility in the United States (US). The more than 200 participants highlighted several key scientific areas for $\mu$SR research, including quantum materials, hydrogen chemistry, and battery materials, and how each area could benefit from a new, high flux pulsed muon source. Experts also discussed aspects of the $\mu$SR technique, such as low-energy $mu$SR, novel software developments, and beam and detector technologies that could enable revolutionary advances in $\mu$SR at a next-generation facility. The workshop concluded with discussion of a concept being developed for a new $\mu$SR facility at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). That novel design concept was first envisioned by many of the same $\mu$SR experts at a workshop held previously at ORNL in 2016. The participants expressed that the current design had the potential to be a world-leading $\mu$SR facility, and strongly encouraged the principal investigators to continue their work in order to refine the concept and determine instrument parameters that would enable new scientific opportunities.

The interplay between strong electron correlation and band topology is at the forefront of condensed matter research. As a direct consequence of correlation, magnetism enriches topological phases and also has promising functional applications. However, the influence of topology on magnetism remains unclear, and the main research effort has been limited to ground state magnetic orders. Here we report a novel order above the magnetic transition temperature in magnetic Weyl semimetal (WSM) CeAlGe. Such order shows a number of anomalies in electrical and thermal transport, and neutron scattering measurements. We attribute this order to the coupling of Weyl fermions and magnetic fluctuations originating from a three-dimensional Seiberg-Witten monopole, which qualitatively agrees well with the observations. Our work reveals a prominent role topology may play in tailoring electron correlation beyond ground state ordering, and offers a new avenue to investigate emergent electronic properties in magnetic topological materials., Comment: Errors found in theoretical section of the paper

An ongoing challenge in the study of quantum materials, is to reveal and explain collective quantum effects in spin systems where interactions between different modes types are important. Here we approach this problem through a combined experimental and theoretical study of interacting transverse and longitudinal modes in an easy-plane quantum magnet near a continuous quantum phase transition. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Ba$_{2}$FeSi$_{2}O$_{7}$ reveal the emergence, decay, and renormalization of a longitudinal mode throughout the Brillouin zone. The decay of the longitudinal mode is particularly pronounced at the zone center. To account for the many-body effects of the interacting low-energy modes in anisotropic magnets, we generalize the standard spin-wave theory. The measured mode decay and renormalization is reproduced by including all one-loop corrections. We have experimentally demonstrated the first non-intrusive 1-GeV proton beam extraction for the generation of muons with a temporal structure optimized for Muon Spin Relaxation/Rotation/Resonance (MuSR) applications. The proton pulses are extracted based on the laser neutralization of 1 GeV hydrogen ion (H-) beam in the high energy beam transport of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator. The maximum flux of the extracted proton beam accounts for only 0.2% of the total proton beam used for neutron production, a marked difference from the 20% reduction at other co-located muon and neutron facilities, and thus the proposed method will result in negligible impact on the SNS operation. This paper describes the development of a fiber/solid-state hybrid laser system that has high flexibility of pulse structure and output power, initial experiments on laser neutralization of H- beam and separation of H0 beam from the existing SNS accelerator beam line, conversion of H0 to proton at the SNS linac dump, and measurement results of 30 ns/50 kHz proton pulses. This system conclusively demonstrates the feasibility of laser-based proton beam extraction to power a world-leading MuSR facility at the SNS.

We present a comprehensive neutron scattering study of the breathing pyrochlore magnet LiGaCr4S8. We observe an unconventional magnetic excitation spectrum with a separation of high and low-energy spin dynamics in the correlated paramagnetic regime above a spin-freezing transition at 12(2) K. By fitting to magnetic diffuse-scattering data, we parameterize the spin Hamiltonian. We find that interactions are ferromagnetic within the large and small tetrahedra of the breathing pyrochlore lattice, but antiferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions are also essential to explain our data, in qualitative agreement with density-functional theory predictions [Ghoshet al.,npj Quantum Mater.4, 63 (2019)]. We explain the origin of geometrical frustration in LiGaCr4S8 interms of net antiferromagnetic coupling between emergent tetrahedral spin clusters that occupy a face-centered lattice. Our results provide insight into the emergence of frustration in the presence of strong further-neighbor couplings, and a blueprint for the determination of magnetic interactions in classical spin liquids., Comment: Supplemental information available upon request

We used transport and inelastic neutron scattering to study the optimally phosphorus-doped BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_2$ superconductor ($T_c = 30$ K). In the normal state, we find that the previously reported linear temperature dependence of the resistivity below room temperature extends to $\sim$ 500 K. Our analysis of the temperature and energy ($E=\hbar\omega$) dependence of spin dynamical susceptibility at the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering wave vector $\chi^{\prime\prime}({\bf Q}_{\rm AF},\omega)$ reveal an $\omega / T$ scaling within $1.1

In this article we present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectra of the heavy-fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$. Measurements as a function of both excitation energy and temperature allow us to disentangle a variety of spectral features, revealing the evolution of the low energy electronic structure across the hidden order transition. Already above the hidden order transition our measurements reveal the existence of weakly dispersive states below the Fermi level that exhibit a large scattering rate. Upon entering the hidden order phase, these states transform into a coherent heavy fermion liquid that hybridizes with the conduction bands., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Replacing a magnetic atom by a spinless atom in a heavy fermion compound generates a quantum state often referred to as a 'Kondo-hole'. No experimental imaging has been achieved of the atomic-scale electronic structure of a Kondo-hole, or of their destructive impact (Lawrence JM, et al. (1996) Kondo hole behavior in Ce0. 97La0. 03Pd3. Phys Rev B 53:12559-12562; Bauer ED, et al. (2011) Electronic inhomogeneity in a Kondo lattice. Proc Natl Acad Sci. 108:6857-6861) on the hybridization process between conduction and localized electrons which generates the heavy fermion state. Here we report visualization of the electronic structure at Kondo-holes created by substituting spinless Thorium atoms for magnetic Uranium atoms in the heavy-fermion system URu2Si2. At each Thorium atom, an electronic bound state is observed. Moreover, surrounding each Thorium atom we find the unusual modulations of hybridization strength recently predicted to occur at Kondo-holes (Figgins J, Morr DK (2011) Defects in heavy-fermion materials: unveiling strong correlations in real space. Then, by introducing the 'hybridization gapmap' technique to heavy fermion studies, we discover intense nanoscale heterogeneity of hybridization due to a combination of the randomness of Kondo-hole sites and the long-range nature of the hybridization oscillations. Within a Kondo lattice, the strong hybridization between electrons localized in real space (r-space) and those delocalized in momentum-space (k-space) generates exotic electronic states called 'heavy fermions'. In URu2Si2 these effects begin at temperatures around 55K but they are suddenly altered by an unidentified electronic phase transition at To = 17.5 K. Whether this is conventional ordering of the k-space states, or a change in the hybridization of the r-space states at each U atom, is unknown. Here we use spectroscopic imaging scanning tunnelling microscopy (SI-STM) to image the evolution of URuSi2 electronic structure simultaneously in r-space and k-space. Above To, the 'Fano lattice' electronic structure predicted for Kondo screening of a magnetic lattice is revealed. Below To, a partial energy gap without any associated density-wave signatures emerges from this Fano lattice. Heavy-quasiparticle interference imaging within this gap reveals its cause as the rapid splitting below To of a light k-space band into two new heavy fermion bands. Thus, the URu2Si2 'hidden order' state emerges directly from the Fano lattice electronic structure and exhibits characteristics, not of a conventional density wave, but of sudden alterations in both the hybridization at each U atom and the associated heavy fermion states., Comment: Main Article + Supplementary Information
