The Uranian moon Ariel exhibits a diversity of geologically young landforms, with a surface composition rich in CO _2 ice. The origin of CO _2 and other species, however, remains uncertain. We report observations of Ariel’s leading and trailing hemispheres, collected with NIRSpec (2.87–5.10 μ m) on the James Webb Space Telescope. These data shed new light on Ariel's spectral properties, revealing a double-lobed CO _2 ice scattering peak centered near 4.20 and 4.25 μ m, with the 4.25 μ m lobe possibly representing the largest CO _2 Fresnel peak yet observed in the solar system. A prominent 4.38 μ m ^13 CO _2 ice feature is also present, as is a 4.90 μ m band that results from ^12 CO _2 ice. The spectra reveal a 4.67 μ m ^12 CO ice band and a broad 4.02 μ m band that might result from carbonate minerals. The data confirm that features associated with CO _2 and CO are notably stronger on Ariel’s trailing hemisphere compared to its leading hemisphere. We compared the detected CO _2 features to synthetic spectra of CO _2 ice and mixtures of CO _2 with CO, H _2 O, and amorphous carbon, finding that CO _2 could be concentrated in deposits thicker than ∼10 mm on Ariel’s trailing hemisphere. Comparison to laboratory data indicates that CO is likely mixed with CO _2 . The evidence for thick CO _2 ice deposits and the possible presence of carbonates on both hemispheres suggests that some carbon oxides could be sourced from Ariel’s interior, with their surface distributions modified by charged particle bombardment, sublimation, and seasonal migration of CO and CO _2 from high to low latitudes.

There has been significant interest in using spin-waves or magnons for information processing, due to their low energy dissipation and short wavelength at terahertz frequencies, however, manipulating magnons can be challenging. Here, Kim et al show that magnons in Sr2IrO4 are extremely strain sensitive, with small applied strains leading to large variation in the magnon energy.

Abstract Background Reflexive responses to head–neck perturbations affect the injury risk in many different situations ranging from sports-related impact to car accident scenarios. Although several experiments have been conducted to investigate these head–neck responses to various perturbations, it is still unclear why and how individuals react differently and what the implications of these different responses across subjects on the potential injuries might be. Therefore, we see a need for both experimental data and biophysically valid computational Human Body Models with bio-inspired muscle control strategies to understand individual reflex responses better. Methods To address this issue, we conducted perturbation experiments of the head–neck complex and used this data to examine control strategies in a simulation model. In the experiments, which we call ’falling heads’ experiments, volunteers were placed in a supine and a prone position on a table with an additional trapdoor supporting the head. This trapdoor was suddenly released, leading to a free-fall movement of the head until reflexive responses of muscles stopped the downwards movement. Results We analysed the kinematic, neuronal and dynamic responses for all individuals and show their differences for separate age and sex groups. We show that these results can be used to validate two simple reflex controllers which are able to predict human biophysical movement and modulate the response necessary to represent a large variability of participants. Conclusions We present characteristic parameters such as joint stiffness, peak accelerations and latency times. Based on this data, we show that there is a large difference in the individual reflexive responses between participants. Furthermore, we show that the perturbation direction (supine vs. prone) significantly influences the measured kinematic quantities. Finally, ’falling heads’ experiments data are provided open-source to be used as a benchmark test to compare different muscle control strategies and to validate existing active Human Body Models directly.

Diffusion MRI classically uses gradient fields that vary linearly in space to encode the diffusion of water molecules in the signal magnitude by tempering its intensity. In spin ensembles, a presumably equal number of particles move in positive and negative direction, resulting in approximately zero change in net phase. Hence, in classical diffusion weighted MRI with a linear gradient field, the phase does not carry any information as the incoherent motion of the spins only impacts the magnitude of the signal. Conversely, when the linear gradient field is replaced with one that varies quadratically over space, the diffusion of water molecules in anisotropic media does give rise to a change in net phase and preserves large portion of the signal around the saddle point of the gradient field. In this work, the phase evolution of anisotropic fibre phantoms in the presence of quadratic gradient fields was studied in Monte Carlo simulations and diffusion MRI experiments. The simulations confirm the dependence of the phase change on the degree of anisotropy of the media and the diffusion weighting, as predicted by the derived analytic model. First MR experiments show a phase change depending on the diffusion time in an anisotropic synthetic fibre phantom, and approximately zero phase change for the experiment repeated in an isotropic agar phantom. As predicted by the analytic model, an increase of the diffusion time by approximately a factor of two leads to an increase of approximately a factor of two in the signal phase.

RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RDRs) are key players in the antiviral defence mediated by RNA silencing in plants. RDR6 is one of the major components of the process, regulating the infection of certain RNA viruses. To better clarify its function against DNA viruses, we analyzed the effect of RDR6 inactivation (RDR6i) in N. benthamiana plants on two phloem-limited begomoviruses, the bipartite Abutilon mosaic virus (AbMV) and the monopartite tomato yellow leaf curl Sardinia virus (TYLCSV). We observed exacerbated symptoms and DNA accumulation for the New World virus AbMV in RDR6i plants, varying with the plant growth temperature (ranging from 16 °C to 33 °C). However, for the TYLCSV of Old World origin, RDR6 depletion only affected symptom expression at elevated temperatures and to a minor extent; it did not affect the viral titre. The accumulation of viral siRNA differed between the two begomoviruses, being increased in RDR6i plants infected by AbMV but decreased in those infected by TYLCSV compared to wild-type plants. In situ hybridization revealed a 6.5-fold increase in the number of AbMV-infected nuclei in RDR6i plants but without egress from the phloem tissues. These results support the concept that begomoviruses adopt different strategies to counteract plant defences and that TYLCSV evades the functions exerted by RDR6 in this host.

The intonational realization of utterances is generally characterized by regional as well as inter- and intra-speaker variability in f0. Category boundaries thus remain “fuzzy” and it is non-trivial how the (continuous) acoustic space maps onto (discrete) pitch accent categories. We focus on three types of rising-falling contours, which differ in the alignment of L(ow) and H(igh) tones with respect to the stressed syllable. Most of the intonational systems on German have described two rising accent categories, e.g., L+H* and L*+H in the German ToBI system. L+H* has a high-pitched stressed syllable and a low leading tone aligned in the pre-tonic syllable; L*+H a low-pitched stressed syllable and a high trailing tone in the post-tonic syllable. There are indications for the existence of a third category which lies between these two categories, with both L and H aligned within the stressed syllable, henceforth termed (LH)*. In the present paper, we empirically investigate the distinctiveness of three rising-falling contours [L+H*, (LH)*, and L*+H, all with a subsequent low boundary tone] in German wh-questions. We employ an approach that addresses both the form and the function of the contours, also taking regional variation into account. In Experiment 1 (form), we used a delayed imitation paradigm to test whether Northern and Southern German speakers can imitate the three rising-falling contours in wh-questions as distinct contours. In Experiment 2 (function), we used a free association task to investigate whether listeners interpret the pragmatic meaning of the three contours differently. Imitation results showed that German speakers—both from the North and the South—reproduced the three contours. There was a small but significant effect of regional variety such that contours produced by speakers from the North were slightly more distinct than those by speakers from the South. In the association task, listeners from both varieties attributed distinct meanings to the (LH)* accent as opposed to the two ToBI accents L+H* and L*+H. Combined evidence from form and function suggests that three distinct contours can be found in the acoustic and perceptual space of German rising-falling contours.

Exoskeletons are powerful tools for aiding humans with pathological conditions, in dangerous environments or in manually exhausting tasks. Typically, they are designed for specific maximum scenarios without taking into account the diversity of tasks and the individuality of the user. To address this discrepancy, a framework was developed for personalizing an exoskeleton by scaling the components, especially the electrical machine, based on different simulated human muscle forces. The main idea was to scale a numerical arm model based on body mass and height to predict different movements representing both manual labor and daily activities. The predicted torques necessary to produce these movements were then used to generate a load/performance cycle for the power unit design. Considering these torques, main operation points of this load cycle were defined and a reference power unit was scaled and optimized. Therefore, a scalability model for an electrical machine is introduced. This individual adaptation and scaling of the power unit for different users leads to a better performance and a lighter design.

It is hypothesized that the nonlinear muscle characteristic of biomechanical systems simplify control in the sense that the information the nervous system has to process is reduced through off-loading computation to the morphological structure. It has been proposed to quantify the required information with an information-entropy based approach, which evaluates the minimally required information to control a desired movement, i.e., control effort. The key idea is to compare the same movement but generated by different actuators, e.g., muscles and torque actuators, and determine which of the two morphologies requires less information to generate the same movement. In this work, for the first time, we apply this measure to numerical simulations of more complex human movements: point-to-point arm movements and walking. These models consider up to 24 control signals rendering the brute force approach of the previous implementation to search for the minimally required information futile. We therefore propose a novel algorithm based on the pattern search approach specifically designed to solve this constraint optimization problem. We apply this algorithm to numerical models, which include Hill-type muscle-tendon actuation as well as ideal torque sources acting directly on the joints. The controller for the point-to-point movements was obtained by deep reinforcement learning for muscle and torque actuators. Walking was controlled by proprioceptive neural feedback in the muscular system and a PD controller in the torque model. Results show that the neuromuscular models consistently require less information to successfully generate the movement than the torque-driven counterparts. These findings were consistent for all investigated controllers in our experiments, implying that this is a system property, not a controller property. The proposed algorithm to determine the control effort is more efficient than other standard optimization techniques and provided as open source.

Human arm movements are highly stereotypical under a large variety of experimental conditions. This is striking due to the high redundancy of the human musculoskeletal system, which in principle allows many possible trajectories toward a goal. Many researchers hypothesize that through evolution, learning, and adaption, the human system has developed optimal control strategies to select between these possibilities. Various optimality principles were proposed in the literature that reproduce human-like trajectories in certain conditions. However, these studies often focus on a single cost function and use simple torque-driven models of motion generation, which are not consistent with human muscle-actuated motion. The underlying structure of our human system, with the use of muscle dynamics in interaction with the control principles, might have a significant influence on what optimality principles best model human motion. To investigate this hypothesis, we consider a point-to-manifold reaching task that leaves the target underdetermined. Given hypothesized motion objectives, the control input is generated using Bayesian optimization, which is a machine learning based method that trades-off exploitation and exploration. Using numerical simulations with Hill-type muscles, we show that a combination of optimality principles best predicts human point-to-manifold reaching when accounting for the muscle dynamics.

ObjectivesLoss of body weight is often seen in pancreatic cancer and also predicts poor prognosis. Thus, maintaining muscle mass is an essential treatment goal. The primary aim was to investigate whether progressive resistance training impacts muscle and adipose tissue compartments. Furthermore, the effect of body composition on overall survival (OS) was investigated.MethodsIn the randomized SUPPORT-study, 65 patients were assigned to 6-month resistance training (2x/week) or a usual care control group. As secondary endpoint, muscle strength of the upper and lower extremities was assessed before and after the intervention period. Routine CT scans were assessed on lumbar L3/4 level for quantification of total-fat-area, visceral-fat-area, subcutaneous-fat-area, intramuscular-fat-area, visceral-to-subcutaneous fat ratio (VFR), muscle-area (MA), muscle-density and skeletal-muscle-index (SMI). OS data were retrieved.ResultsOf 65 patients, 53 had suitable CT scans at baseline and 28 completed the intervention period with suitable CT scans. There were no significant effects observed of resistance training on body composition (p>0.05; effect sizes ω2p ConclusionThere is anabolic potential in patients with resectable pancreatic cancer. A progressive resistance training may help patients to maintain their muscle mass and avoid muscle depletion. CT-quantified muscle mass at the level of L3/4 showed a good correlation to muscle strength. Therefore, maintaining muscle mass and muscle strength through structured resistance training could help patients to maintain their physical functioning. Cachexia and sarcopenia are associated with poor outcome and increased chemotherapy-induced toxicity in lung cancer patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate different dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) on the blood biochemical parameters, nitrogen balances and crude metabolizable energy of swine in the initial phase. Sixteen barrows were used, averaging 27.95 kg of initial weight, allotted individually in metabolic cages in a randomized blocks design with four treatments (DEB of 160, 208, 257 and 305 mEq/kg) and 4 replicates. The blood biochemical parameters analyzed were chloride, potassium, sodium and urea in blood. Urine pH was also evaluated, and the parameters evaluated in nitrogen (N) balance were N intake, fecal N, N excreted in urine, absorbed N, N retention, retained N/absorbed N and total excretion of N. The gross energy digestibility and metabolizibility coefficients were determined, and the respectives values of digestible and metabolizable energy. The values of urinary pH increased (P < 0.01) linearly with increasing levels of DEB, ranging from 6.90 to 8.03. The results for chloride, potassium and nitrogen balances of variables and gross energy were similar (P > 0.05) between the evaluated DEB. A linear increase (P < 0.01) was also observed for sodium concentrations in blood serum due to the increase of DEB, with values of 2.91, 3.03, 3.27 and 3.18 g/l, respectively for the different treatments. Urea levels in blood serum increased linearly (P < 0.01), with values of 26.21, 28.64, 34.32 and 32.89 mg/dl. It was concluded that increasing the dietary electrolyte balance, from 160 to 305 mEq/kg resulted in higher concentrations of urea and sodium in blood serum, and higher pH values in the urine of swine in the initial phase.Objetivou-se com esse trabalho avaliar diferentes balanços eletrolíticos das dietas (BED) sobre os parâmetros bioquímicos sanguíneos, balanços de nitrogênio e a metabolizabilidade da energia bruta, de suínos na fase inicial. Foram utilizados 16 suínos, machos castrados, com peso inicial de 27,95 kg, distribuídos individualmente em gaiolas metabólicas, em um delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso com quatro tratamentos (BED de 160, 208, 257 e 305 mEq/kg) e quatro repetições. Os parâmetros bioquímicos sanguíneos avaliados foram cloretos, potássio, sódio e uréia no soro. O pH da urina também foi avaliado, e as variáveis utilizadas no balanço de nitrogênio (N) foram o N ingerido, N excretado nas fezes, N excretado na urina, N absorvido, N retido, N retido/N absorvido e excreção total de N. Foram determinados os coeficientes de digestibilidade e metabolizabilidade da energia bruta e seus respectivos valores de energia digestível e metabolizável. Os valores de pH urinário aumentaram (P < 0,01) linearmente em função dos níveis crescentes do BED, variando de 6,90 a 8,03. Os resultados obtidos para cloretos, potássio e as variáveis dos balanços de nitrogênio e da energia bruta foram semelhantes (P > 0,05) entre os BED avaliados. Houve aumento linear (P < 0,01) na concentração de sódio no soro sanguíneo em função do aumento do BED, com valores de 2,91; 3,03; 3,27 e 3,18 g/l, respectivamente para os diferentes tratamentos. Os níveis de uréia no soro sanguíneo aumentaram linearmente (P < 0,01), apresentando valores de 26,21; 28,64; 34,32 e 32,89 mg/dl. Concluiu-se que o aumento do balanço eletrolítico da dieta, de 160 a 305 mEq/kg, proporcionou maiores concentrações de uréia e sódio do soro sanguíneo, e maiores valores de pH na urina de suínos na fase inicial.

We have developed a semi-automatic selection procedure for DNA aptamers. Employing a robotic workstation for magnetic particle handling, this method allows for a fast, reproducible, and parallelized selection of DNA aptamers. The selection protocol is designed to provide high flexibility and versatility in terms of choice of buffers and reagents, as well as stringency of selection. Using this procedure, we have successfully isolated ligand-specific, high-affinity DNA aptamers.

We have used atomic layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy to synthesize coherently lattice-matched thin films of the high-temperature superconductor DyBa2Cu3O7-x with minimal defect density. A systematic set of x-ray reciprocal-space maps reveals tetragonal and orthorhombic structures with different twinning patterns and elucidates their evolution with the thickness, the oxygenation state, and the epitaxial relationship with the substrate. We also show that films with more pronounced orthorhombicity exhibit lower normal-state resistivities and higher superconducting transition temperatures. These findings provide guidance for the synthesis of optimized superconducting hetero-structures and devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
