While bars are common in disk galaxies, their formation conditions are not well understood. We use N-body simulations to study the formation and evolution of a bar in isolated galaxies consisting of a stellar disk, a classical bulge, and a dark halo. We consider 24 galaxy models that are similar to the Milky Way but differ in the mass and compactness of the classical bulge and halo concentration. We find that the bar formation requires (QT,min /1.2)2 + (CMC/0.05)2 < 1, where QT,min and CMC refer to the minimum value of the Toomre stability parameter and the central mass concentration, respectively. Bars tend to be stronger and longer, and to rotate more slowly, in galaxies with a less massive and less compact bulge and halo. All bars formed in our models correspond to slow bars. A model with the bulge mass of ∼10%–20% of the disk under a concentrated halo produces a bar similar to that of the Milky Way. We conduct a systematic investigation of the microlensing data collected during the previous observation seasons for the purpose of reanalyzing anomalous lensing events with no suggested plausible models. We find that two anomalous lensing events OGLE-2018-BLG-0584 and KMT-2018-BLG-2119 cannot be explained with the usual models based on either a binary-lens single-source (2L1S) or a single-lens binary-source (1L2S) interpretation. We test the feasibility of explaining the light curves with more sophisticated models by adding an extra lens (3L1S model) or a source (2L2S model) component to the 2L1S lens-system configuration. We find that a 2L2S interpretation well explains the light curves of both events, for each of which there are a pair of solutions resulting from the close and wide degeneracy. For the event OGLE-2018-BLG-0584, the source is a binary composed of two K-type stars, and the lens is a binary composed of two M dwarfs. For KMT-2018-BLG-2119, the source is a binary composed of two dwarfs of G and K spectral types, and the lens is a binary composed of a low-mass M dwarf and a brown dwarf., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

The dynamical corotation torque arising from the deformation of the horseshoe orbits, along with the vortensity gradient in the background disk, is important for determining orbital migration rate and direction of low-mass planets. Previous two-dimensional studies predicted that the dynamical corotation torque is positive, decelerating the inward planet migration. In contrast, recent three-dimensional studies have shown that buoyancy resonance makes the dynamical corotation torque negative, accelerating the inward migration. In this paper, we study the dependence of the dynamical corotation torque on the thermal transport using three-dimensional simulations. We first show that our results are consistent with previous three-dimensional studies when the disk is fully adiabatic. In more realistic radiative disks, however, radiative diffusion suppresses the buoyancy resonance significantly, especially at high-altitude regions, and yields a positive dynamical corotation torque. This alleviates the issue of a rapid migration caused by the negative dynamical corotation torque in the adiabatic disks. Observations indicate that the star formation rate (SFR) of nuclear rings varies considerably with time and is sometimes asymmetric rather than being uniform across a ring. To understand what controls temporal and spatial distributions of ring star formation, we run semi-global, hydrodynamic simulations of nuclear rings subject to time-varying and/or asymmetric mass inflow rates. These controlled variations in the inflow lead to variations in the star formation, while the ring orbital period ($18\,{\rm Myr}$) and radius ($600\,{\rm pc}$) remain approximately constant. We find that both the mass inflow rate and supernova feedback affect the ring SFR. An oscillating inflow rate with period $\Delta \tau_\text{in}$ and amplitude 20 causes large-amplitude (a factor of $\gtrsim 5$), quasi-periodic variations of the SFR, when $\Delta \tau_\text{in} \gtrsim 50\,{\rm Myr}$. We find that the time-varying ISM weight and midplane pressure track each other closely, establishing an instantaneous vertical equilibrium. The measured time-varying depletion time is consistent with the prediction from self-regulation theory provided the time delay between star formation and supernova feedback is taken into account. The supernova feedback is responsible only for small-amplitude (a factor of $\sim 2$) fluctuations of the SFR with a timescale $\lesssim 40\,{\rm Myr}$. Asymmetry in the inflow rate does not necessarily lead to asymmetric star formation in nuclear rings. We investigate the gravitational microlensing event KMT-2019-BLG-1715, of which light curve shows two short-term anomalies from a caustic-crossing binary-lensing light curve: one with a large deviation and the other with a small deviation. We identify five pairs of solutions, in which the anomalies are explained by adding an extra lens or source component in addition to the base binary-lens model. We resolve the degeneracies by applying a method, in which the measured flux ratio between the first and second source stars is compared with the flux ratio deduced from the ratio of the source radii. Applying this method leaves a single pair of viable solutions, in both of which the major anomaly is generated by a planetary-mass third body of the lens, and the minor anomaly is generated by a faint second source. A Bayesian analysis indicates that the lens comprises three masses: a planet-mass object with $\sim 2.6~M_{\rm J}$ and binary stars of K and M dwarfs lying in the galactic disk. Nuclear rings are sites of intense star formation at the centers of barred galaxies. To understand what determines the structure and star formation rate (SFR; $\dot{M}_{\rm SF}$) of nuclear rings, we run semi-global, hydrodynamic simulations of nuclear rings subject to constant mass inflow rates $\dot{M}_{\rm in}$. We adopt the TIGRESS framework of Kim \& Ostriker to handle radiative heating and cooling, star formation, and related supernova (SN) feedback. We find that the SN feedback is never strong enough to destroy the ring or quench star formation everywhere in the ring. Under the constant $\dot{M}_{\rm in}$, the ring star formation is very steady and persistent, with the SFR exhibiting only mild temporal fluctuations. The ring SFR is tightly correlated with the inflow rate as $\dot{M}_{\rm SF}\approx 0.8\dot{M}_{\rm in}$, for a range of $\dot{M}_{\rm in}=0.125-8\,M_\odot\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$. Within the ring, vertical dynamical equilibrium is maintained, with the midplane pressure (powered by SN feedback) balancing the weight of the overlying gas. The SFR surface density is correlated nearly linearly with the midplane pressure, as predicted by the pressure-regulated, feedback-modulated star formation theory. Based on our results, we argue that the ring SFR is causally controlled by $\dot{M}_\text{in}$, while the ring gas mass adapts to the SFR to maintain the vertical dynamical equilibrium under the gravitational field arising from both gas and stars., 31 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Utilizing the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we present CS line maps in five rotational lines ($J_{\rm u}=7, 5, 4, 3, 2$) toward the circumnuclear disk (CND) and streamers of the Galactic Center. Our primary goal is to resolve the compact structures within the CND and the streamers, in order to understand the stability conditions of molecular cores in the vicinity of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) Sgr A*. Our data provide the first homogeneous high-resolution ($1.3'' = 0.05$ pc) observations aiming at resolving density and temperature structures. The CS clouds have sizes of $0.05-0.2$ pc with a broad range of velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{\rm FWHM}=5-40$ km s$^{-1}$). The CS clouds are a mixture of warm ($T_{\rm k}\ge 50-500$ K, n$_{\rm H_2}$=$10^{3-5}$ cm$^{-3}$) and cold gas ($T_{\rm k}\le 50$ K, n$_{\rm H_2}$=$10^{6-8}$ cm$^{-3}$). A stability analysis based on the unmagnetized virial theorem including tidal force shows that $84^{+16}_{-37}$ % of the total gas mass is tidally stable, which accounts for the majority of gas mass. Turbulence dominates the internal energy and thereby sets the threshold densities $10-100$ times higher than the tidal limit at distance $\ge 1.5$ pc to Sgr A*, and therefore, inhibits the clouds from collapsing to form stars near the SMBH. However, within the central $1.5$ pc, the tidal force overrides turbulence and the threshold densities for a gravitational collapse quickly grow to $\ge 10^{8}$ cm$^{-3}$., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

With the aim of interpreting anomalous lensing events with no suggested models, we conducted a project of reinvestigating microlensing data in and before the 2019 season. In this work, we report a multi-planet system OGLE-2019-BLG-0468L found from the project. The light curve of the lensing event OGLE-2019-BLG-0468, which consists of three distinctive anomaly features, could not be explained by the usual binary-lens or binary-source interpretation. We find a solution explaining all anomaly features with a triple-lens interpretation, in which the lens is composed of two planets and their host, making the lens the fourth multi-planet system securely found by microlensing. The two planets have masses $\sim 3.4~M_{\rm J}$ and $\sim 10.2~M_{\rm J}$, and they are orbiting around a G-type star with a mass $\sim 0.9~M_\odot$ and a distance $\sim 4.4$ kpc. The host of the planets is most likely responsible for the light of the baseline object, although the possibility for the host to be a companion to the baseline object cannot be ruled out., Comment: 10 pages, 3 tables, 11 figures

Microlensing planets occurring on faint source stars can escape detection due to their weak signals. Occasionally, detections of such planets are not reported due to the difficulty of extracting high-profile scientific issues on the detected planets. For the solid demographic census of microlensing planetary systems based on a complete sample, we investigate the microlensing data obtained in the 2016 and 2017 seasons to search for planetary signals in faint-source lensing events. From this investigation, we find four unpublished microlensing planets including KMT-2016-BLG-2364Lb, KMT-2016-BLG-2397Lb, OGLE-2017-BLG-0604Lb, and OGLE-2017-BLG-1375Lb. We analyze the observed lensing light curves and determine their lensing parameters. From Bayesian analyses conducted with the constraints from the measured parameters, it is found that the masses of the hosts and planets are in the ranges $0.50\lesssim M_{\rm host}/M_\odot\lesssim 0.85$ and $0.5 \lesssim M_{\rm p}/M_{\rm J}\lesssim 13.2$, respectively, indicating that all planets are giant planets around host stars with subsolar masses. The lenses are located in the distance range of $3.8 \lesssim \dl/{\rm kpc}\lesssim 6.4$. It is found that the lenses of OGLE-2017-BLG-0604 and OGLE-2017-BLG-1375 are likely to be in the Galactic disk., 11 pages, 8 tables, 12 figures

Spiral arms greatly affect gas flows and star formation in disk galaxies. We use local three-dimensional simulations of the vertically-stratified, self-gravitating, differentially-rotating, interstellar medium (ISM) subject to a stellar spiral potential to study the effects of spiral arms on star formation and formation of arm spurs/feathers. We adopt the TIGRESS framework of Kim & Ostriker (2017) to handle radiative heating and cooling, star formation, and ensuing supernova (SN) feedback. We find that more than 90% of star formation takes place in spiral arms, but the global star formation rate (SFR) in models with spiral arms is enhanced by less than a factor of 2 compared to the no-arm counterpart. This results from a quasi-linear relationship between the SFR surface density Sigma_SFR and the gas surface density Sigma, and supports the picture that spiral arms do not trigger star formation but rather concentrate star-forming regions. Correlated SN feedback produces gaseous spurs/feathers downstream from arms in both magnetized and unmagnetized models. These spurs/feathers are short-lived and have magnetic fields parallel to their length, in contrast to the longer-lived features with perpendicular magnetic fields induced by gravitational instability. SN feedback drives the turbulent component of magnetic fields, with the total magnetic field strength sublinearly proportional to Sigma. The total midplane pressure varies by a factor of ~10 between arm and interarm regions but agrees locally with the total vertical ISM weight, while Sigma_SFR is locally consistent with the prediction of pressure-regulated, feedback-modulated theory., Accepted for publication in the ApJ

A fraction of dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster contain disk features like bars and spiral arms. Using $N$-body simulations, we investigate the effects of tidal forces on the formation of such disk features in disk dwarf galaxies resembling VCC856. We consider 8 Cluster-Galaxy models in which disk dwarf galaxies with differing pericenter distance and spin orientation experience the tidal gravitational force of a Virgo-like NFW halo, and additional 8 Galaxy-Galaxy models in which two dwarf galaxies undergo tidal interactions with different strength. We find that the cluster tidal effect is moderate due to the small galaxy size, making the bars form earlier by $\sim1$--$1.5\Gyr$ compared to the cases in isolation. While the galactic halos significantly lose their mass within the virial radius due to the cluster tidal force, the mass of the stellar disks is nearly unchanged, suggesting that the inner regions of a disk-halo system is secured from the tidal force. The tidal forcing from either the cluster potential or a companion galaxy triggers the formation of two-armed spirals at early time before a bar develops. The tidally-driven arms decay and wind with time, suggesting that they are kinematic density waves. In terms of the strength and pitch angle, the faint arms in VCC856 are best matched with the arms in a marginally unstable galaxy produced by a distant tidal encounter with its neighbor $\sim0.85\Gyr$ ago., Accepted for publication in the ApJ

We present CS(7-6) line maps toward the central parsec of the Galactic Center (GC), conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The primary goal is to find and characterize the gas structure in the inner cavity of the circumnuclear disk (CND) in high resolution (1.3"=0.05 pc). Our large field-of-view mosaic maps -- combining interferometric and single-dish data that recover extended emission - provide a first homogeneous look to resolve and link the molecular streamers in the CND with the neutral nuclear filaments newly detected within the central cavity of the CND. We find that the nuclear filaments are rotating with Keplerian velocities in a nearly face-on orbit with an inclination angle of ~10-20 degree (radius, 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted in ApJL

We aim to find missing microlensing planets hidden in the unanalyzed lensing events of previous survey data. For this purpose, we conduct a systematic inspection of high-magnification microlensing events, with peak magnifications $A_{\rm peak}\gtrsim 30$, in the data collected from high-cadence surveys in and before the 2018 season. From this investigation, we identify an anomaly in the lensing light curve of the event KMT-2018-BLG-1025. The analysis of the light curve indicates that the anomaly is caused by a very low mass-ratio companion to the lens. We identify three degenerate solutions, in which the ambiguity between a pair of solutions (solutions B) is caused by the previously known close--wide degeneracy, and the degeneracy between these and the other solution (solution A) is a new type that has not been reported before. The estimated mass ratio between the planet and host is $q\sim 0.8\times 10^{-4}$ for the solution A and $q\sim 1.6\times 10^{-4}$ for the solutions B. From the Bayesian analysis conducted with measured observables, we estimate that the masses of the planet and host and the distance to the lens are $(M_{\rm p}, M_{\rm h}, D_{\rm L})\sim (6.1~M_\oplus, 0.22~M_\odot, 6.7~{\rm kpc})$ for the solution A and $\sim (4.4~M_\oplus, 0.08~M_\odot, 7.5~{\rm kpc})$ for the solutions B. The planet mass is in the category of a super-Earth regardless of the solutions, making the planet the eleventh super-Earth planet, with masses lying between those of Earth and the Solar system's ice giants, discovered by microlensing., 10 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

We run self-consistent simulations of Milky Way-sized, isolated disk galaxies to study formation and evolution of a stellar bar as well as a nuclear ring in the presence of gas. We consider two sets of models with cold or warm disks that differ in the radial velocity dispersions, and vary the gas fraction $f_{\rm gas}$ by fixing the total disk mass. A bar forms earlier and more strongly in the cold disks with larger $f_{\rm gas}$, while gas progressively delays the bar formation in the warm disks . The bar formation enhances a central mass concentration which in turn makes the bar decay temporarily, after which it regrows in size and strength, eventually becoming stronger in models with smaller $f_{\rm gas}$. Although all bars rotate fast in the beginning, they rapidly turn to slow rotators. In our models, only the gas-free, warm disk undergoes rapid buckling instability, while other disks thicken more gradually via vertical heating. The gas driven inward by the bar potential readily forms a star-forming nuclear ring. The ring is very small when it first forms and grows in size over time. The ring star formation rate is episodic and bursty due to feedback, and well correlated with the mass inflow rate to the ring. Some expanding shells produced by star formation feedback are sheared out in the bar regions and collide with dust lanes to appear as filamentary interbar spurs. The bars and nuclear rings formed in our simulations have properties similar to those in the Milky Way.

Using a suite of radiation hydrodynamic simulations of star cluster formation in turbulent clouds, we study the escape fraction of ionizing (Lyman continuum) and non-ionizing (FUV) radiation for a wide range of cloud masses and sizes. The escape fraction increases as H II regions evolve and reaches unity within a few dynamical times. The cumulative escape fraction before the onset of the first supernova explosion is in the range 0.05-0.58; this is lower for higher initial cloud surface density, and higher for less massive and more compact clouds due to rapid destruction. Once H II regions break out of their local environment, both ionizing and non-ionizing photons escape from clouds through fully ionized, low-density sightlines. Consequently, dust becomes the dominant absorber of ionizing radiation at late times and the escape fraction of non-ionizing radiation is only slightly larger than that of ionizing radiation. The escape fraction is determined primarily by the mean $\langle \tau\rangle$ and width $\sigma$ of the optical-depth distribution in the large-scale cloud, increasing for smaller $\langle \tau\rangle$ and/or larger $\sigma$. The escape fraction exceeds (sometimes by three orders of magnitude) the naive estimate $e^{-\langle \tau\rangle}$ due to non-zero $\sigma$ induced by turbulence. We present two simple methods to estimate, within $\sim20\%$, the escape fraction of non-ionizing radiation using the observed dust optical depth in clouds projected on the plane of sky. We present the analysis of a very high-magnification ($A\sim 900$) microlensing event KMT-2019-BLG-1953. A single-lens single-source (1L1S) model appears to approximately delineate the observed light curve, but the residuals from the model exhibit small but obvious deviations in the peak region. A binary lens (2L1S) model with a mass ratio $q\sim 2\times 10^{-3}$ improves the fits by $\Delta\chi^2=181.8$, indicating that the lens possesses a planetary companion. From additional modeling by introducing an extra planetary lens component (3L1S model) and an extra source companion (2L2S model), it is found that the residuals from the 2L1S model further diminish, but claiming these interpretations is difficult due to the weak signals with $\Delta\chi^2=16.0$ and $13.5$ for the 3L1S and 2L2L models, respectively. From a Bayesian analysis, we estimate that the host of the planets has a mass of $M_{\rm host}=0.31^{+0.37}_{-0.17}~M_\odot$ and that the planetary system is located at a distance of $D_{\rm L}=7.04^{+1.10}_{-1.33}~{\rm kpc}$ toward the Galactic center. The mass of the securely detected planet is $M_{\rm p}=0.64^{+0.76}_{-0.35}~M_{\rm J}$. The signal of the potential second planet could have been confirmed if the peak of the light curve had been more densely observed by followup observations, and thus the event illustrates the need for intensive followup observations for very high-magnification events even in the current generation of high-cadence surveys., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We present the analysis of the microlensing event OGLE-2016-BLG-1227. The light curve of this short-duration event appears to be a single-lens event affected by severe finite-source effects. Analysis of the light curve based on single-lens single-source (1L1S) modeling yields very small values of the event timescale, $t_{\rm E}\sim 3.5$ days, and the angular Einstein radius, $\theta_{\rm E}\sim 0.009$ mas, making the lens a candidate of a free-floating planet. Close inspection reveals that the 1L1S solution leaves small residuals with amplitude $\Delta I\lesssim 0.03$ mag. We find that the residuals are explained by the existence of an additional widely-separated heavier lens component, indicating that the lens is a wide-separation planetary system rather than a free-floating planet. From Bayesian analysis, it is estimated that the planet has a mass of $M_{\rm p} = 0.79^{+1.30}_{-0.39} M_{\rm J}$ and it is orbiting a low-mass host star with a mass of $M_{\rm host}=0.10^{+0.17}_{-0.05} M_\odot$ located with a projected separation of $a_\perp=3.4^{+2.1}_{-1.0}$ au. The planetary system is located in the Galactic bulge with a line-of-sight separation from the source star of $D_{\rm LS}=1.21^{+0.96}_{-0.63}$ kpc. The event shows that there are a range of deviations in the signatures of host stars for apparently isolated planetary lensing events and that it is possible to identify a host even when a deviation is subtle., Comment: 8 figures, 4 tables

We present the analysis of a binary microlensing event KMT-2016-BLG-2052, for which the lensing-induced brightening of the source star lasted for 2 seasons. We determine the lens mass from the combined measurements of the microlens parallax $\pie$ and angular Einstein radius $\thetae$. The measured mass indicates that the lens is a binary composed of M dwarfs with masses of $M_1\sim 0.34~M_\odot$ and $M_2\sim 0.17~M_\odot$. The measured relative lens-source proper motion of $\mu\sim 3.9~{\rm mas}~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ is smaller than $\sim 5~{\rm mas}~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ of typical Galactic lensing events, while the estimated angular Einstein radius of $\thetae\sim 1.2~{\rm mas}$ is substantially greater than the typical value of $\sim 0.5~{\rm mas}$. Therefore, it turns out that the long time scale of the event is caused by the combination of the slow $\mu$ and large $\thetae$ rather than the heavy mass of the lens. From the simulation of Galactic lensing events with very long time scales ($t_{\rm E}\gtrsim 100$ days), we find that the probabilities that long time-scale events are produced by lenses with masses $\geq 1.0~M_\odot$ and $\geq 3.0~M_\odot$ are $\sim 19\%$ and 2.6\%, respectively, indicating that events produced by heavy lenses comprise a minor fraction of long time-scale events. The results indicate that it is essential to determine lens masses by measuring both $\pie$ and $\thetae$ in order to firmly identify heavy stellar remnants such as neutron stars and black holes., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

Gravitational interactions between a protoplanetary disk and its embedded planet is one of the formation mechanisms of gaps and rings found in recent ALMA observations. To quantify the gap properties measured in not only surface density but also rotational velocity profiles, we run two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of protoplanetary disks by varying three parameters: the mass ratio $q$ of a planet to a central star, the ratio of the disk scale height $h_p$ to the orbital radius $r_p$ of the planet, and the viscosity parameter $\alpha$. We find the gap depth $\delta_\Sigma$ in the gas surface density depends on a single dimensionless parameter $K\equiv q^2(h_p/r_p)^{-5}\alpha^{-1}$ as $\delta_\Sigma = (1 + 0.046K)^{-1}$, consistent with the previous results of Kanagawa et al. (2015a). The gap depth $\delta_V$ in the rotational velocity is given by $\delta_V= 0.007 (h_p/r_p) K^{1.38}/(1 +0.06K^{1.03})$. The gap width, in both surface density and rotational velocity, has a minimum of about $4.7 h_p$ when the planet mass $M_p$ is around the disk thermal mass $M_{\text{th}}$, while it increases in a power-law fashion as $M_p/M_{\text{th}}$ increases or decrease from unity. Such a minimum in the gap width arises because spirals from sub-thermal planets have to propagate before they shock the disk gas and open a gap. We present the analysis of the binary-lens microlensing event OGLE-2017-BLG-0537. The light curve of the event exhibits two strong caustic-crossing spikes among which the second caustic crossing was resolved by high-cadence surveys. It is found that the lens components with a mass ratio $\sim 0.5$ are separated in projection by $\sim 1.3\thetae$, where $\thetae$ is the angular Einstein radius. Analysis of the caustic-crossing part yields $\thetae=1.77\pm 0.16$~mas and a lens-source relative proper motion of $\mu =12.4\pm 1.1~{\rm mas}~{\rm yr}^{-1}$. The measured $\mu$ is the third highest value among the events with measured proper motions and $\sim 3$ times higher than the value of typical Galactic bulge events, making the event a strong candidate for follow-up observations to directly image the lens by separating it from the source. From the angular Einstein radius combined with the microlens parallax, it is estimated that the lens is composed of two main-sequence stars with masses $M_1\sim 0.4~M_\odot$ and $M_2\sim 0.2~M_\odot$ located at a distance of $D_{\rm L}\sim 1.2$~kpc. However, the physical lens parameters are not very secure due to the weak microlens-parallax signal, and thus we cross check the parameters by conducting a Bayesian analysis based on the measured Einstein radius and event timescale combined with the blending constraint. From this, we find that the physical parameters estimated from the Bayesian analysis are consistent with those based on the measured microlens parallax. Resolving the lens from the source can be done in about 5 years from high-resolution follow-up observations and this will provide a rare opportunity to test and refine the microlensing model., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure, 2 tables

Utilizing James Clark Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) 850 $\mu$m SCUPOL dust polarization data, we investigate the configuration of the magnetic ($B$) field in the circumnuclear disk (CND) of the Galactic Center (GC). The SCUPOL data show a highly improved polarization coverage and resolution compared to earlier 100 $\mu$m observations. The 850 $\mu$m data have a resolution and coverage similar to previous 350 $\mu$m polarimetry data. However, with a proper sampling on a 10$"$ grid, we find the 850 $\mu$m data trace the morphological structures of the CND substantially better. Furthermore, because the 850 $\mu$m trace the field deeper into the material near Sgr A*, they represent the highest resolution submillimeter probe to date of the CND magnetic field. The observed $B$-field morphology is well described by a self-similar axisymmetric disk model where the radial infall velocity is one quarter of the rotational velocity. A detailed comparison with higher-resolution interferometric maps from the Submillimeter Array further reveals that the $B$-field aligns with the neutral gas streamers connecting to the CND. Moreover, the innermost observed $B$-field structure also appears to trace and align with the mini-spiral located inside the CND. This suggests that there is one underlying $B$-field structure that is connecting the CND with its streamers and the inner mini-spiral. An estimate of $\beta_{\rm Plasma} \lesssim 1-$based on the global B-field morphology that constrains the azimuthal-to-vertical field strength ratio of around 40 combined with a measurement of the azimuthal velocity--indicates that the B-field appears dynamically significant towards the CND and also onwards to the inner mini-spiral., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figure, accepted for publication in ApJ

Mass measurements of gravitational microlenses require one to determine the microlens parallax $\pie$, but precise $\pie$ measurement, in many cases, is hampered due to the subtlety of the microlens-parallax signal combined with the difficulty of distinguishing the signal from those induced by other higher-order effects. In this work, we present the analysis of the binary-lens event OGLE-2017-BLG-0329, for which $\pie$ is measured with a dramatically improved precision using additional data from space-based $Spitzer$ observations. We find that while the parallax model based on the ground-based data cannot be distinguished from a zero-$\pie$ model at 2$\sigma$ level, the addition of the $Spitzer$ data enables us to identify 2 classes of solutions, each composed of a pair of solutions according to the well-known ecliptic degeneracy. It is found that the space-based data reduce the measurement uncertainties of the north and east components of the microlens-parallax vector $\pivec_{\rm E}$ by factors $\sim 18$ and $\sim 4$, respectively. With the measured microlens parallax combined with the angular Einstein radius measured from the resolved caustic crossings, we find that the lens is composed of a binary with components masses of either $(M_1,M_2)\sim (1.1,0.8)\ M_\odot$ or $\sim (0.4,0.3)\ M_\odot$ according to the two solution classes. The first solution is significantly favored but the second cannot be securely ruled out based on the microlensing data alone. UV radiation feedback from young massive stars plays a key role in the evolution of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) by photoevaporating and ejecting the surrounding gas. We conduct a suite of radiation hydrodynamic simulations of star cluster formation in marginally-bound, turbulent GMCs, focusing on the effects of photoionization and radiation pressure on regulating the net star formation efficiency (SFE) and cloud lifetime. We find that the net SFE depends primarily on the initial gas surface density, $\Sigma_0$, such that the SFE increases from 4% to 51% as $\Sigma_0$ increases from $13\,M_{\odot}\,{\rm pc}^{-2}$ to $1300\,M_{\odot}\,{\rm pc}^{-2}$. Cloud destruction occurs within $2$-$10\,{\rm Myr}$ after the onset of radiation feedback, or within $0.6$-$4.1$ freefall times (increasing with $\Sigma_0$). Photoevaporation dominates the mass loss in massive, low surface-density clouds, but because most photons are absorbed in an ionization-bounded Str\"{o}mgren volume the photoevaporated gas fraction is proportional to the square root of the SFE. The measured momentum injection due to thermal and radiation pressure forces is proportional to $\Sigma_0^{-0.74}$, and the ejection of neutrals substantially contributes to the disruption of low-mass and/or high-surface density clouds. We present semi-analytic models for cloud dispersal mediated by photoevaporation and by dynamical mass ejection, and show that the predicted net SFE and mass loss efficiencies are consistent with the results of our numerical simulations., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. 26 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables. We present an implementation of an adaptive ray tracing (ART) module in the Athena hydrodynamics code that accurately and efficiently handles the radiative transfer involving multiple point sources on a three-dimensional Cartesian grid. We adopt a recently proposed parallel algorithm that uses non-blocking, asynchronous MPI communications to accelerate transport of rays across the computational domain. We validate our implementation through several standard test problems including the propagation of radiation in vacuum and the expansions of various types of HII regions. Additionally, scaling tests show that the cost of a full ray trace per source remains comparable to that of the hydrodynamics update on up to $\sim 10^3$ processors. To demonstrate application of our ART implementation, we perform a simulation of star cluster formation in a marginally bound, turbulent cloud, finding that its star formation efficiency is $12\%$ when both radiation pressure forces and photoionization by UV radiation are treated. We directly compare the radiation forces computed from the ART scheme with that from the M1 closure relation. Although the ART and M1 schemes yield similar results on large scales, the latter is unable to resolve the radiation field accurately near individual point sources., 20 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a new face-on map of dense neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas in the outer Galaxy. Our map has been produced from the Leiden/Argentine/Bonn (LAB) HI 21-cm line all-sky survey by finding intensity maxima along every line of sight and then by projecting them on the Galactic plane. The resulting face-on map strikingly reveals the complex spiral structure beyond the solar circle, which is characterized by a mixture of distinct long arcs of HI concentrations and numerous 'interarm' features. The comparison with more conventional spiral tracers confirms the nature of those long arc structures as spiral arms. Our map shows that the HI spiral structure in the outer Galaxy is well described by a four-arm spiral model (pitch angle of 12 deg) with some deviations, and gives a new insight into identifying HI features associated with individual arms., 24 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in PASP

A fraction of early-type dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster have a disk component and even possess disk features such as bar, lens, and spiral arms. In this study, we construct 15 galaxy models that resemble VCC856, considered to be an infalling progenitor of disk dwarf galaxies, within observational error ranges, and use $N$-body simulations to study their long-term dynamical evolution in isolation as well as the formation of bar in them. We find that dwarf disk galaxies readily form bars unless they have an excessively concentrated halo or a hot disk. This suggests that infalling dwarf disk galaxies are intrinsically unstable to bar formation, even without any external perturbation, accounting for a population of barred dwarf galaxies in the outskirts of the Virgo cluster. The bars form earlier and stronger in galaxies with a lower fraction of counter-streaming motions, lower halo concentration, lower velocity anisotropy, and thinner disk. Similarly to normal disk galaxies, dwarf disk galaxies also undergo recurrent buckling instabilities. The first buckling instability tends to shorten the bar and to thicken the disk, and drives a dynamical transition in the bar pattern speed as well as mass inflow rate. In nine models, the bars regrow after the mild first buckling instability due to the efficient transfer of disk angular momentum to the halo, and are subject to recurrent buckling instabilities to turn into X-shaped bulges.

The interaction between a supermassive black hole (SMBH) and the surrounding material is of primary importance in modern astrophysics. The detection of the molecular 2-pc circumnuclear disk (CND) immediately around the Milky Way SMBH, SgrA*, provides an unique opportunity to study SMBH accretion at sub-parsec scales. Our new wide-field CS(2-1) map toward the Galactic center (GC) reveals multiple dense molecular streamers originated from the ambient clouds 20-pc further out, and connecting to the central 2 parsecs of the CND. These dense gas streamers appear to carry gas directly toward the nuclear region and might be captured by the central potential. Our phase-plot analysis indicates that these streamers show a signature of rotation and inward radial motion with progressively higher velocities as the gas approaches the CND and finally ends up co-rotating with the CND. Our results might suggest a possible mechanism of gas feeding the CND from 20 pc around 2 pc in the GC. In this paper, we discuss the morphology and the kinematics of these streamers. As the nearest observable Galactic nucleus, this feeding process may have implications for understanding the processes in extragalactic nuclei., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures. Barred galaxies contain substructures such as a pair of dust lanes and nuclear rings, with the latter being sites of intense star formation. We study the substructure formation as well as star formation in nuclear rings using numerical simulations. We find that nuclear rings form not by the Lindblad resonances, as previously thought, but by the centrifugal barrier that inflowing gas along dust lanes cannot overcome. This predicts a smaller ring in a more strongly barred galaxy, consistent with observations. Star formation rate (SFR) in a nuclear ring is determined primarily by the mass inflow rate to the ring. In our models, the SFR typically shows a short strong burst associated with the rapid gas infall and stays very small for the rest of the evolution. When the SFR is low, ages of young star clusters exhibit an azimuthal gradient along the ring since star formation takes place mostly near the contact points between the dust lanes and the nuclear ring. When the SFR is large, on the other hand, star formation is widely distributed throughout the whole length of the ring, with no apparent age gradient of star clusters. Since observed ring star formation appears long-lived with episodic bursts, our results suggest that the bar region should be replenished continually with fresh gas from outside.

Nuclear rings at centers of barred galaxies exhibit strong star formation activities. They are thought to undergo gravitational instability when sufficiently massive. We approximate them as rigidly-rotating isothermal objects and investigate their gravitational instability. Using a self-consistent field method, we first construct their equilibrium sequences specified by two parameters: alpha corresponding to the thermal energy relative to gravitational potential energy, and R_B measuring the ellipticity or ring thickness. Unlike in the incompressible case, not all values of R_B yield an isothermal equilibrium, and the range of R_B for such equilibria shrinks with decreasing alpha. The density distributions in the meridional plane are steeper for smaller alpha, and well approximated by those of infinite cylinders for slender rings. We also calculate the dispersion relations of nonaxisymmetric modes in rigidly-rotating slender rings with angular frequency Omega_0 and central density rho_max. Rings with smaller alpha are found more unstable with a larger unstable range of the azimuthal mode number. The instability is completely suppressed by rotation when Omega_0 exceeds the critical value. The critical angular frequency is found to be almost constant at ~ 0.7 sqrt(G*rho_c) for alpha > 0.01 and increases rapidly for smaller alpha. We use three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the nonlinear gravitational responses of gas to, and the resulting drag forces on, very massive perturbers moving on circular orbits. This work extends our previous studies that explored the cases of low-mass perturbers on circular orbits and massive perturbers on straight-line trajectories. The background medium is assumed to be non-rotating, adiabatic with index 5/3, and uniform with density rho0 and sound speed a0. We model the gravitating perturber using a Plummer sphere with mass Mp and softening radius rs in a uniform circular motion at speed Vp and orbital radius Rp, and run various models with differing R=rs/Rp, Mach=Vp/a0, and B=G*Mp/(a0^2*Rp). A quasi-steady density wake of a supersonic model consists of a hydrostatic envelope surrounding the perturber, an upstream bow shock, and a trailing low-density region. The continuous change in the direction of the perturber motion makes the detached shock distance reduced compared to the linear-trajectory cases, while the orbit-averaged gravity of the perturber gathers the gas toward the center of the orbit, modifying the background preshock density to rho1=(1 + 0.46B)*rho0 depending weakly on Mach. For sufficiently massive perturbers, the presence of a hydrostatic envelope makes the drag force smaller than the prediction of the linear perturbation theory, resulting in F = 4*pi*rho1*(G*Mp/Vp)^2 * (0.7/etaB) for etaB = B/(Mach^2 -1) > 0.1; the drag force for low-mass perturbers with etaB < 0.1 agrees well with the linear prediction. The nonlinear drag force becomes independent of R as long as R < etaB/2, which places an upper limit on the perturber size for accurate evaluation of the drag force in numerical simulations., Accepted for publication in the ApJ

Galactic disks consist of both stars and gas. The stars gravitationally influence the gas either in disks at large or within spiral arms, leading to the formation of giant clouds and turbulence driving in the gas. In featureless disks as in flocculent galaxies, swing amplification operating in a combined star-gas disk is efficient to form bound condensations and feed a significant level of random gas motions. This occurs when the gaseous Toomre parameter is less than 1.4 for the stellar parameters similar to the solar neighbourhood conditions. In disks with spiral features, on the other hand, spiral-arm spurs and associated giant clouds develop as a consequence of magneto-Jeans instability in which magnetic tension counterbalances the stabilizing Coriolis force. Spiral shocks are inherently unstable when the vertical dimension is taken into account, exhibiting flapping motions of the shock front. This naturally converts the kinetic energy in galaxy rotation into random kinetic energy of the gas. The resulting turbulent motions are supersonic and persist despite strong shock dissipation. Thermal instability occurring in gas flows across spiral arms prompts phases transitions that produce a significant fraction of thermally-unstable, intermediate-temperature gas in the postshock expansion zones.

In many astrophysical situations, as in the coalescence of supermassive black hole pairs at gas rich galactic nuclei, the dynamical friction experienced by an object is a combination of its own wake as well as the wakes of its companions. Using a semi-analytic approach, we investigate the composite wake due to, and the resulting drag forces on, double perturbers that are placed at the opposite sides of the orbital center and move on a circular orbit in a uniform gaseous medium. The circular orbit makes the wake of each perturber asymmetric, creating an overdense tail at the trailing side. The tail not only drags the perturber backward but it also exerts a positive torque on the companion. For equal-mass perturbers, the positive torque created by the companion wake is, on average, a fraction ~40-50% of the negative torque created by its own wake, but this fraction may be even larger for perturbers moving subsonically. This suggests that the orbital decay of a perturber in a double system, especially in the subsonic regime, can take considerably longer than in isolation.
