The classical and quantum Hall effects are important subjects in condensed matter physics. The emergent 3D quantum Hall effects and nonlinear Hall effect have attracted considerable interest recently, with the former elevating the quantum Hall effect to a higher dimension and the latter extending the Hall effect to higher-order responses. In this perspective, we briefly introduce these two new members of the Hall family and discuss the open questions and future research directions.

Fundamental symmetry breaking and relativistic spin–orbit coupling give rise to fascinating phenomena in quantum materials. Of particular interest are the interfaces between ferromagnets and common s-wave superconductors, where the emergent spin-orbit fields support elusive spin-triplet superconductivity, crucial for superconducting spintronics and topologically-protected Majorana bound states. Here, we report the observation of large magnetoresistances at the interface between a quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe0.29TaS2 and a conventional s-wave superconductor NbN, which provides the possible experimental evidence for the spin-triplet Andreev reflection and induced spin-triplet superconductivity at ferromagnet/superconductor interface arising from Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The temperature, voltage, and interfacial barrier dependences of the magnetoresistance further support the induced spin-triplet superconductivity and spin-triplet Andreev reflection. This discovery, together with the impressive advances in two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnets, opens an important opportunity to design and probe superconducting interfaces with exotic properties., The interfaces between ferromagnets and superconductors receive many attentions due to emergent relativistic spin-orbit coupling. Here, the authors provide possible evidence for spin triplet Andreev reflection at the interface between a van der Waals ferromagnet Fe0.29TaS2 and a s-wave superconductor NbN.

The interplay between quenched disorder and critical behavior in quantum phase transitions is conceptually fascinating and of fundamental importance for understanding phase transitions. However, it is still unclear whether or not the quenched disorder influences the universality class of quantum phase transitions. More crucially, the absence of superconducting-metal transitions under in-plane magnetic fields in 2D superconductors imposes constraints on the universality of quantum criticality. Here, we observe the thickness-tuned universality class of superconductor-metal transition by changing the disorder strength in β - W films with varying thickness. The finite-size scaling uncovers the switch of universality class: quantum Griffiths singularity to multiple quantum criticality at a critical thickness of t c ⊥ 1 ~ 8 n m and then from multiple quantum criticality to single criticality at t c ⊥ 2 ~ 16 n m . Moreover, the superconducting-metal transition is observed for the first time under in-plane magnetic fields and the universality class is changed at t c ‖ ~ 8 n m . The observation of thickness-tuned universality class under both out-of-plane and in-plane magnetic fields provides broad information for the disorder effect on superconducting-metal transitions and quantum criticality.

The Weyl orbit refers to a new type of cyclotron orbit recently proposed in Weyl semimetals. This is a surface–bulk hybrid orbit that can be modulated by thickness and external fields. Recently, the Weyl orbit has been used to realize the 3D quantum Hall effect, and subsequent rapid progress in experiments promise a new understanding of higher-dimension quantum Hall physics. In this Perspective, we review the theoretical background and the current experimental status of the Weyl orbit, present the extension of Weyl orbit physics in realizing the 3D quantum Hall effect and further discuss the opportunities in tuning topological quantum states and realizing device applications provided by the concept of the Weyl orbit. The Weyl orbit is a type of cyclotron orbit that appears in topological semimetals. This Perspective discusses the Weyl orbit in the context of the 3D quantum Hall effect and provides an outlook on new phenomena that can arise from these states.

BackgroundPrevious studies confirmed that most neoantigens predicted by algorithms do not work in clinical practice, and experimental validations remain indispensable for confirming immunogenic neoantigens. In this study, we identified the potential neoantigens with tetramer staining, and established the Co-HA system, a single-plasmid system coexpressing patient human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and antigen, to detect the immunogenicity of neoantigens and verify new dominant hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) neoantigens.MethodsFirst, we enrolled 14 patients with HCC for next-generation sequencing for variation calling and predicting potential neoantigens. Then, the Co-HA system was established. To test the feasibility of the system, we constructed target cells coexpressing HLA-A*11:01 and the reportedKRASG12D neoantigen as well as specific T-cell receptor (TCR)-T cells. The specific cytotoxicity generated by this neoantigen was shown using the Co-HA system. Moreover, potential HCC-dominant neoantigens were screened out by tetramer staining and validated by the Co-HA system using methods including flow cytometry, enzyme-linked immunospot assay and ELISA. Finally, antitumor test in mouse mode and TCR sequencing were performed to further evaluate the dominant neoantigen.ResultsFirst, 2875 somatic mutations in 14 patients with HCC were identified. The main base substitutions were C>T/G>A transitions, and the main mutational signatures were 4, 1 and 16. The high-frequency mutated genes includedHMCN1,TTNandTP53. Then, 541 potential neoantigens were predicted. Importantly, 19 of the 23 potential neoantigens in tumor tissues also existed in portal vein tumor thrombi. Moreover, 37 predicted neoantigens restricted by HLA-A*11:01, HLA-A*24:02 or HLA-A*02:01 were performed by tetramer staining to screen out potential HCC-dominant neoantigens. HLA-A*24:02-restricted epitope 5'-FYAFSCYYDL-3' and HLA-A*02:01-restricted epitope 5'-WVWCMSPTI-3' demonstrated strong immunogenicity in HCC, as verified by the Co-HA system. Finally, the antitumor efficacy of 5'-FYAFSCYYDL-3'-specific T cells was verified in the B-NDG-B2mtm1Fcrntm1(mB2m)mouse and their specific TCRs were successfully identified.ConclusionWe found the dominant neoantigens with high immunogenicity in HCC, which were verified with the Co-HA system.

Background: Forkhead transcription factor 3 (FOXP3) is a key molecule for the development of regulatory T cell. Recent studies showed that FOXP3 was also expressed in tumor cells. This study is designed to identify the expression of FOXP3 and its pathogenesis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Based on the tight-binding calculations on honeycomb lattice and photonic experimental visualization on artificial graphene (AG), we report the domain-wall-induced gapped topological kink states and topological corner states. In honeycomb lattice, domain walls (DWs) with gapless topological kink states could be induced either by sublattice symmetry breaking or by lattice deformation. We find that the coexistence of these two mechanisms will induce DWs with gapped topological kink states. Significantly, the intersection of these two types of DWs gives rise to topological corner state localized at the crossing point. Through the manipulation of the DWs, we show AG with honeycomb lattice structure not only a versatile platform supporting multiple topological corner modes in a controlled manner, but also possessing promising applications such as fabricating topological quantum dots composed of gapped topological kink states and topological corner states.

Exploring cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for gastric cancer growth, survival, self-renewal, and metastasis helps develop efficacious therapeutic strategies. In this study, the expression and function of zinc finger protein 852 (ZNF852) in human gastric cancer cell lines were characterized. ZNF852 was upregulated in gastric cancer cell lines relative to normal gastric epithelial cell line GES-1. When the ZNF852 gene was ablated in gastric cancer cell line MGC-803 using the CRISPR/Cas9-encoding lentivirus, the proliferation of MGC-803 was suppressed. ZNF852 deficiency also resulted in the inhibition of MGC-803 sphere formation, along with decreases in SRY-box 2 (SOX2), octamer-binding transcription factor 4 (OCT4), and Nanog homeobox (NANOG), suggesting that ZNF852 sustains self-renewal of MGC-803 cells. Furthermore, ZNF852 deficiency increased oxaliplatin-induced MGC-803 cell death, implying the role of ZNF852 in drug sensitivity. Subcutaneous infusion of MGC-803 cells into nude mice illustrated the same effects of ZNF852 on the proliferation and self-renewal of gastric cancer cells. Similar effects of ANF852 were also seen in gastric cancer cell line SNU-1. Interestingly, ZNF852 deficiency caused downregulation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) on gastric cancer cells. In summary, this study uncovers the positive regulatory role of ZNF852 in gastric cancer growth and maintenance. ZNF852 could be a potential therapeutic target for inhibiting gastric cancer initiation or progression.

An axion insulator is theoretically introduced to harbor unique surface states with half-integer Chern number $${{{{{{{\mathcal{C}}}}}}}}$$ C . Recently, experimental progress has been made in different candidate systems, while a unique Hall response to directly reflect the half-integer Chern number is still lacking to distinguish an axion state from other possible insulators. Here we show that the $${{{{{{{\mathcal{C}}}}}}}}=\frac{1}{2}$$ C = 1 2 axion state corresponds to a topological state with Chern number $${{{{{{{\mathcal{N}}}}}}}}=1$$ N = 1 in the Majorana basis. In proximity to an s − wave superconductor, a topological phase transition to an $${{{{{{{\mathcal{N}}}}}}}}=0$$ N = 0 phase takes place at critical superconducting pairing strength. Our theoretical analysis shows that a chiral Majorana hinge mode emerges at the boundary of $${{{{{{{\mathcal{N}}}}}}}}=1$$ N = 1 and $${{{{{{{\mathcal{N}}}}}}}}=0$$ N = 0 regions on the surface of an axion insulator. Furthermore, we propose a half-integer quantized thermal Hall conductance via a thermal transport measurement, which is a signature of the gapless chiral Majorana mode and thus confirms the $${{{{{{{\mathcal{C}}}}}}}}=\frac{1}{2}$$ C = 1 2 ($${{{{{{{\mathcal{N}}}}}}}}=1$$ N = 1 ) topological nature of an axion state. Our proposals help to theoretically comprehend and experimentally identify the axion insulator and may benefit the research of topological quantum computation.

Background Obstructive jaundice caused by primary duodenal lymphoma is a rare disease. Case presentation We reported a 59-year-old man who underwent endoscopic ultrasonography for obstructive jaundice and found a duodenal papilla tumor. Light microscopy revealed a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Immunohistochemical staining showed that the tumor was aggressive B-cell lymphoma. We carried out molecular targeted therapy combined with CHOP regimen chemotherapy. Conclusion Surgery plays an important role in resolving obstructive jaundice when accurate histological diagnosis cannot be made. After diagnosis, chemotherapy should play a central role in treatment.

Van der Waals magnets have emerged as a fertile ground for the exploration of highly tunable spin physics and spin-related technology. Two-dimensional (2D) magnons in van der Waals magnets are collective excitation of spins under strong confinement. Although considerable progress has been made in understanding 2D magnons, a crucial magnon device called the van der Waals magnon valve, in which the magnon signal can be completely and repeatedly turned on and off electrically, has yet to be realized. Here we demonstrate such magnon valves based on van der Waals antiferromagnetic insulator MnPS3. By applying DC electric current through the gate electrode, we show that the second harmonic thermal magnon (SHM) signal can be tuned from positive to negative. The guaranteed zero crossing during this tuning demonstrates a complete blocking of SHM transmission, arising from the nonlinear gate dependence of the non-equilibrium magnon density in the 2D spin channel. Using the switchable magnon valves we demonstrate a magnon-based inverter. These results illustrate the potential of van der Waals anti-ferromagnets for studying highly tunable spin-wave physics and for application in magnon-base circuitry in future information technology., 18 pages, 4 figures

Topological insulators (TIs) are an exciting discovery because of their robustness against disorder and interactions. Recently, second-order TIs have been attracting increasing attention, because they host topologically protected 1D hinge states in 3D or 0D corner states in 2D. A significantly critical issue is whether the second-order TIs also survive interactions, but it is still unexplored. We study the effects of weak Coulomb interactions on a 3D second-order TI, with the help of renormalization-group calculations. We find that the 3D second-order TIs are always unstable, suffering from two types of topological phase transitions. One is from second-order TI to TI, the other is to normal insulator. The first type is accompanied by emergent time-reversal and inversion symmetries and has a dynamical critical exponent $\ensuremath{\kappa}=1$. The second type does not have the emergent symmetries but has nonuniversal dynamical critical exponents $\ensuremath{\kappa}l1$. Our results may inspire more inspections on the stability of higher-order topological states of matter and related novel quantum criticalities.

Quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS) reveals the profound influence of quenched disorder on the quantum phase transitions, characterized by the divergence of the dynamical critical exponent at the boundary of the vortex glasslike phase, named as quantum Griffiths phase. However, in the absence of vortices, whether the QGS can exist under a parallel magnetic field remains a puzzle. Here, we study the magnetic field induced superconductor--metal transition in ultrathin crystalline ${\mathrm{PdTe}}_{2}$ films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Remarkably, the QGS emerges under both perpendicular and parallel magnetic field in four-monolayer ${\mathrm{PdTe}}_{2}$ films. The direct activated scaling analysis with a new irrelevant correction has been proposed, providing important evidence of QGS. With increasing film thickness to six monolayers, the QGS disappears under perpendicular field but persists under parallel field, and this discordance may originate from the differences in microscopic processes. Our work demonstrates the universality of parallel field induced QGS and can stimulate further investigations on novel quantum phase transitions under parallel magnetic field.

Recently, higher-order topological matter and 3D quantum Hall effects have attracted a great amount of attention. The Fermi-arc mechanism of the 3D quantum Hall effect proposed to exist in Weyl semimetals is characterized by the one-sided hinge states, which do not exist in all the previous quantum Hall systems, and more importantly, pose a realistic example of the higher-order topological matter. The experimental effort so far is in the Dirac semimetal Cd_{3}As_{2}, where, however, time-reversal symmetry leads to hinge states on both sides of the top and bottom surfaces, instead of the aspired one-sided hinge states. We propose that under a tilted magnetic field, the hinge states in Cd_{3}As_{2}-like Dirac semimetals can be one sided, highly tunable by field direction and Fermi energy, and robust against weak disorder. Furthermore, we propose a scanning tunneling Hall measurement to detect the one-sided hinge states. Our results will be insightful for exploring not only the quantum Hall effects beyond two dimensions, but also other higher-order topological insulators in the future.

The axion is a hypothetical but experimentally undetected particle. Recently, the antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has been predicted to host the axion insulator, but the experimental evidence remains elusive. Specifically, the axion insulator is believed to carry "half-quantized" chiral currents running antiparallel on its top and bottom surfaces. However, it is challenging to measure precisely the half-quantization. Here, we propose a nonlocal surface transport device, in which the axion insulator can be distinguished from normal insulators without a precise measurement of the half-quantization. More importantly, we show that the nonlocal surface transport, as a qualitative measurement, is robust in realistic situations when the gapless side surfaces and disorder come to play. Moreover, thick electrodes can be used in the device of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ thick films, enhancing the feasibility of the surface measurements. Conventional power system stabilizer (CPSS) is used to damp low frequency oscillations (LFO) of interarea power system. But CPSS can't damp effectively LFO when there are big disturbances, such as three phase short circuit fault and changes between system structure & parameters. This paper proposes a novel adaptive PSS using reinforcement learning (RL) which has strong robustness to external perturbation. The Actor-Critic (AC) reinforcement learning is an important RL method. The Actor network can output a control signal and the Critic network is used to evaluate the control performance of Actor network. RBF neural network has better convergence than BP network. So the Actor network and Critic network are implemented by RBF network. The gradient descent method is used to tune RBF network weights online, so the presented RL-PSS has the adaptability to damp LFO invariable operation conditions. Simulation experiments have verified that the RL-PSS has better effectiveness and robustness than the CPSS.

We have previously identified that PPPDE1 is a deubiquitinase (DUB) belonging to a cysteine isopeptidase family. Here we sought to explore the biological significance of PPPDE1 in hepatocellular carcinoma and its underlying molecular mechanism. In the present study, we found that amplification and overexpression of PPPDE1 were associated with poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We also demonstrated that knocking down of PPPDE1 could significantly block the clonal growth and tumorigenicity of human HCC cells, which revealed a critical role for PPPDE1 in HCC development. Furthermore, we proved that PPPDE1 is a key modulator of p53 protein level and its down stream apoptosis pathway. Taken together, these results suggested that PPPDE1 is a putative HCC driver gene and extensive studies should be conducted in the future to investigate the role of PPPDE1 in HCC and other tumors.

We present a detailed study of the Bose-Hubbard model in a $p$-band triangular lattice by focusing on the evolution of orbital order across the superfluid-Mott insulator transition. Two distinct phases are found in the superfluid regime. One of these phases adiabatically connects the weak interacting limit. This phase is characterized by the intertwining of axial $p_\pm=p_x \pm ip_y$ and in-plane $p_\theta=\cos\theta p_x+\sin\theta p_y$ orbital orders, which break the time-reversal symmetry and lattice symmetries simultaneously. In addition, the calculated Bogoliubov excitation spectrum gaps the original Dirac points in the single-particle spectrum but exhibits emergent Dirac points. The other superfluid phase in close proximity to the Mott insulator with unit boson filling shows a detwined in-plane ferro-orbital order. Finally, an orbital exchange model is constructed for the Mott insulator phase. Its classical ground state has an emergent SO$(2)$ rotational symmetry in the in-plane orbital space and therefore enjoys an infinite degeneracy, which is ultimately lifted by the orbital fluctuation via the order by disorder mechanism. Our systematic analysis suggests that the in-plane ferro-orbital order in the Mott insulator phase agrees with and likely evolves from the latter superfluid phase., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Metal-insulator transitions driven by magnetic fields have been extensively studied in 2D, but a 3D theory is still lacking. Motivated by recent experiments, we develop a scaling theory for the metal-insulator transitions in the strong-magnetic-field quantum limit of a 3D system. By using a renormalization-group calculation to treat electron-electron interactions, electron-phonon interactions, and disorder on the same footing, we obtain the critical exponent that characterizes the scaling relations of the resistivity to temperature and magnetic field. By comparing the critical exponent with those in a recent experiment [F. Tang et al., Nature (London) 569, 537 (2019)], we conclude that the insulating ground state was not only a charge-density wave driven by electron-phonon interactions but also coexisting with strong electron-electron interactions and backscattering disorder. We also propose a current-scaling experiment for further verification. The recent experimental observations of the quantum Hall effect in three-dimensional (3D) topological semimetals have attracted great attention, but there are still debates on its origin. We systematically study the dependence of the quantum Hall effect in topological semimetals on the thickness, Fermi energy, and growth direction, taking into account the contributions from the Fermi-arc surface states, confinement-induced bulk subbands, and helical side-surface edge states. In particular, we focus on the intensively studied Dirac semimetal ${\mathrm{Cd}}_{3}{\mathrm{As}}_{2}$ and its slabs grown along experimentally accessible directions, including [001], [110], and [112]. We reveal an ignored mechanism from the Zeeman splitting of the helical edge states, which along with Fermi-arc 3D quantum Hall effect, may give a nonmonotonic dependence of the Hall conductance plateaus on the magnetic field in the most experimentally studied [112] direction slab. Our results will be insightful for exploring the quantum Hall effects beyond two dimensions.

Recently, the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ has attracted great attention. It has an out-of-plane antiferromagnetic order, which is believed to open a sizable energy gap in the surface states. This gap, however, was not always observable in the latest angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments. To address this issue, we analytically derive an effective model for the two-dimensional (2D) surface states by starting from a three-dimensional (3D) Hamiltonian for bulk ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ and taking into account the spatial profile of the bulk magnetization. Our calculations suggest that the diminished surface gap may be caused by a much smaller and more localized intralayer ferromagnetic order. In addition, we calculate the spatial distribution and penetration depth of the surface states, which indicates that the surface states are mainly embedded in the first two septuple layers from the terminating surface. From our analytical results, the influence of the bulk parameters on the surface states can be found explicitly. Furthermore, we derive a $\mathbf{k}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}\mathbf{p}$ model for ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ thin films and show the oscillation of the Chern number between odd and even septuple layers. Our results will be helpful for the ongoing explorations of the ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{x}{\mathrm{Te}}_{y}$ family.

We study the in-plane critical magnetic field of two-dimensional Ising superconducting systems and propose the microscopic calculation for these disordered two-dimensional superconducting systems with or without inversion symmetry. Protected by certain specific spin-orbit interaction which polarizes the electron spin to the out-of-plane direction, the in-plane critical fields largely surpass the Pauli limit and show remarkable upturn in the zero-temperature limit. The impurity scattering and Rashba spin-orbit interaction, treated on equal footing in the microscopic framework, both weaken the critical field but in qualitatively different manners. The microscopic theory is consistent with recent experimental results in stanene and Pb superconducting ultrathin films.

We perform magnetotransport and microwave (MW) photovoltage (PV) measurements in bulk tantalum arsenide (TaAs) crystal with $c$-(001) crystalline surface at low temperature ($T$). Two sets of quantum oscillations from different topological Weyl electron pockets are found in magnetoresistance and PV. Similar to the magnetoresistance, PV oscillates with the density of states around the Fermi level. Our observation qualitatively countenances a model which holds that the PV oscillations originate from nonequilibrium chiral Weyl fermions. Moreover, as a probe for detecting local electron states, PV is proved to be more sensitive than magnetoresistances. Microwave photovoltaic effect provides an effective method to explore topological electron structure and novel quantum phases in three-dimensional Weyl systems.

Regulatory factor X-5 (RFX5) represents a key transcription regulator of MHCII gene expression in the immune system. This study aims to explore the molecular mechanisms and biological significance of RFX5. Firstly, by analyzing ENCODE chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-seq in HepG2 and TCGA RNA-seq data, we discovered lysine-specific demethylase 4A (KDM4A), also named JMJD2A, to be a major downstream target gene of RFX5. Moreover, RFX5 was verified to bind directly to the KDM4A’s promoter region and sequentially promoted its transcription determined by the ChIP-PCR assay and luciferase assay. In addition, RFX5-dependent regulation of KDM4A was demonstrated in HCC. Compared with adjacent non-tumor tissues, the expression levels of KDM4A were significantly raised in HCC tumor tissues. Notably, elevated levels of KDM4A were strongly correlated with HCC patient prognosis. Functionally, KDM4A overexpression largely rescued the growth inhibitory effects of RFX5 deletion, highlighting KDM4A as a downstream effector of RFX5. Mechanistically, the RFX5-KDM4A pathway promoted the progression of the cell cycle from G0/G1 to S phase and was protective against cell apoptosis through regulation of p53 and its downstream genes in HCC. In conclusion, RFX5 could promote HCC progression via transcriptionally activating KDM4A expression.

The quantum Hall effect (QHE) is broadly studied in the films of semiconductors, conductors, topological insulators, and topological semimetals. Wedge-shaped samples, guaranteeing the uniform properties of materials, bring obscure characteristics connected to the sample geometry. Here we study the QHE in wedge-shaped samples by using a simple electron gas model. We find that the Hall resistance shows anomalous behaviors: the Hall plateau value shifts when measuring from different lateral terminals, the Hall resistances in positive and negative magnetic fields are not equal, and the Hall resistance depends on the direction of the tilted magnetic field. In addition, the longitudinal resistance also has anomalous characteristics in wedge-shaped samples. These results are very similar to the QHE based on the Weyl orbits observed in a recent experiment, although they are different in origin. These anomalous behaviors in the trivial wedge-shaped sample originate from the spatial redistribution of Landau levels; that is, the edge state can follow an equal-thickness path in the bulk.

In this Letter, we study an Anderson-localization-induced quantized transport in disordered Chern insulators (CIs). By investigating the disordered CIs with a step potential, we find that the chiral interface states emerge along the interfaces of the step potential, and the energy range for such quantized transport can be manipulated through the potential strength. Furthermore, numerical simulations on cases with a multi-step potential demonstrate that such chiral state can be spatially shifted by varying the Fermi energy, and the energy window for quantized transport is greatly enlarged. Experimentally, such chiral interface states can be realized by imposing transverse electric field, in which the energy window for quantized transport is much broader than the intrinsic band gap of the corresponding CI. These phenomena are quite universal for disordered CIs due to the direct phase transition between the CI and the normal insulator., 20 pages, 20 figures

Background Forkhead transcription factor 3 (FOXP3) is a key molecule for the development of regulatory T cell. Recent studies showed that FOXP3 was also expressed in tumor cells. This study is designed to identify the expression of FOXP3 and its pathogenesis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods Through immunohistochemistry, RNA extraction and Real-Time Quantitative PCR, western blot analysis, transwell cell migration assay and invasion assays, and in vivo experiment, we detected FOXP3 expression in HCC and analyzed the expression of tumor metastasis-related genes in HCC cells using female BALB/c-Nude mice. Results The results showed that FOXP3 was expressed in partial HCC tissues samples and cell lines. The distant metastasis rate was remarkably higher in the FOXP3 positive HCCs than that in the negative group. The positive rate of FOXP3 expression in the metastatic HCC was higher than that in primary HCC, and the expression level of FOXP3 was found to increase as the enhancement in the metastatic potential of the cell lines. Furthermore, in HCC cell lines, FOXP3 overexpression can promote the cell metastasis and invasion by regulating MMP-1. The in vivo experiment showed that the proliferation ability of HepG2 cells in nude mice increased significantly after FOXP3 was overexpressed, and the incidence rate of lung metastasis in MHCC97L cells was significantly deceased after knocking down the FOXP3 expression. Conclusions Our findings support that partial HCC tissues and cell lines expressing FOXP3 can promote the metastasis by regulating MMP-1.

Majorana zero modes (MZMs)---bearing potential applications for topological quantum computing---are verified in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) fermion systems, including semiconductor nanowires, magnetic atomic chains, and planar Josephson junctions. However, the existence of multibands in these systems makes the MZMs fragile to the influence of disorder. Moreover, in practical perspective, the proximity induced superconductivity may be difficult and restricted for 1D systems. Here, we propose a flexible route to realize MZMs through 1D topological kink states by engineering a 2D electron gas with antidot lattices in which both the aforementioned issues can be avoided owing to the robustness of kink states and the intrinsically attainable superconductivity in high-dimensional systems. The MZMs are verified to be quite robust against disorders and the bending of kink states and can be conveniently tuned by varying the Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength. Our proposal provides an experimental feasible platform for MZMs with systematic manipulability and assembleability based on the present techniques in a 2D electron gas system.

We investigate the 3D quantum Hall effect in Weyl semimetals and elucidate a global picture of the edge states. The edge states hosting 3D quantum Hall effect are combinations of Fermi arcs and chiral Landau bands dispersing along the magnetic field direction. The Hall conductance, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{xz}^{H}$ [see Fig. 4], shows quantized plateaus with the variance of the magnetic field when the Fermi level is at the Weyl node. However, the chiral Landau bands can change the spatial distribution of the edge states, especially under a tilted magnetic field, and the resulting edge states lead to distinctive Hall transport phenomena. A tilted magnetic field contributes an intrinsic value to ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{xz}^{H}$ and such an intrinsic value is determined by the tilting angle $\ensuremath{\theta}$ between the magnetic field and the $y$ axis [see Fig. 1(c)]. Particularly, even if the perpendicular magnetic field is fixed, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{xz}^{H}$ will change its sign with an abrupt spatial shift of the edge states when $\ensuremath{\theta}$ exceeds a critical angle ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{c}$. Our work uncovers the novel edge-state nature of the 3D quantum Hall effect in Weyl semimetals.

We numerically demonstrate that the topological corner states residing in the corners of higher-order topological insulator possess non-Abelian braiding properties. Such topological corner states are Dirac fermionic modes other than Majorana zero-modes. We claim that Dirac fermionic modes protected by nontrivial topology also support non-Abelian braiding. An analytical description on such non-Abelian braiding is conducted based on the vortex-induced Dirac-type fermionic modes. The braiding operator for Dirac fermionic modes is also analytically derivated and compared with the Majorana zero-modes. Experimentally, such non-Abelian braiding operation on Dirac fermionic modes is proposed to be testified through topological electric circuit., 6 pages, 3 figues

We show that Floquet engineering with circularly polarized light (CPL) can selectively split the valley degeneracy of a twisted multilayer graphene (TMG), and thus generate a controlled valley-polarized Floquet Chern flat band with a tunable large Chern number. It offers a feasible optical way to manipulate the valley degree of freedom in moir\'e flat bands, and hence opens new opportunities to study the valleytronics of moir\'e flat band systems. We thus expect that many of the valley-related properties of TMG, e.g., orbital ferromagnetism, can be switched by CPL with proper doping. We reveal a Chern number hierarchy rule for the Floquet flat bands in a generic $(M+N)$-layer TMG. We also illustrate that the CPL effects on TMG strongly rely on the stacking chirality, which is a unique feature of TMG. All these phenomena could be tested in the twisted double bilayer graphene systems, which is the simplest example of TMG and has already been realized in experiments.

Superconductivity has been one of the most fascinating quantum states of matter for over several decades. Among the superconducting materials, LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface is of particularly interest since superconductivity exists between two insulating materials, which provides it with various unique applications compared with bulk superconductors and makes it a suitable platform to study the quantum Hall effect, charge density wave, superconductivity and magnetism in one device. Therefore, a lot of efforts have been made to search new superconducting oxide interface states with higher superconducting critical temperature (TC). Recently, a superconducting state with TC ~ 2 K has been found at the interface between a ferromagnetic insulator EuO and a band insulator (111)-KTaO3. Here, we report the experimental investigation of the superconductor-metal quantum phase transition of the EuO/KTaO3 interface. Around the transition, a divergence of the dynamical critical exponent is observed, which supports the quantum Griffiths singularity in the EuO/KTaO3 interface. The quantum Griffiths singularity could be attributed to large rare superconducting regions and quenched disorders at the interface. In this work, we predict a hinged quantum spin-Hall (HQSH) effect featured by a pair of helical hinge modes in antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (TI) multilayers. This pair of helical hinge modes are localized on the hinges of the top and bottom surfaces of the AFM TI multilayers. Unlike the conventional QSH effect, the HQSH effect survives the breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) and thus represents a different kind of topological phenomenon. The helical hinge modes are sustainable to inelastic scattering and TRS-breaking disorder, which can be observed in macroscopic samples. We show that this HQSH effect can be understood as a three-dimensional generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and its topology is characterized by the spin Chern number. At last, we propose that the HQSH effect can be realized in newly found intrinsic AFM TI materials (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ or magnetic-doped TI multilayers by current experimental setups., 6 pages, 4 figures

We study the energy spectrum of Weyl fermions in a topological semimetal in the presence of a central charged impurity. When the strength of the charge exceeds a critical value, an infinite family of quasibound states appear that show characteristic signatures of discrete scale invariance. The invariance is broken by the presence of screening or a finite mass. If these terms are small enough the quasibound states still exist, but there can be perturbations of the shallowest quasibound states. These special quasibound states manifest themselves in the local density of states as well as the relative phase, which can be observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Such effects that are usually associated with the relativistic quantum electrodynamics of strong fields become observable in topological materials.

Besides the giant peak of the nonlocal resistance $R_{NL}$, an anomalous negative value of $R_{NL}$ has been observed in graphene systems, while its formation mechanism is not quite understood yet. In this work, utilizing the non-equilibrium Green's function method, we calculate the local-current flow in an H-shaped non-interacting graphene system locating in the ballistic regime. Similar to the previous conclusions made from the viscous regime, the numerical results show that a local-current vortex appears between the nonlocal measuring terminals, which induces a backflow current and a remarkable negative voltage drop at the probe. Specifically, the stronger the vortex exhibits, the more negative $R_{NL}$ manifests. Besides, a spin-orbital coupling is added as an additional tool to study this exotic vortex, which is not a driving force for the arising vortex at all. Moreover, a breakdown of the nonlocal Wiedemann-Franz law is obtained in this ballistic system, and two experimental criteria are further provided to confirm the existence of this exotic vortex. Notably, a discussion is made that the vortex actually originates from the collision between the flowing current and the boundaries, due to the long electron mean free path and the consequent ballistic transport caused by the specific linear spectrum of graphene., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

The quantized thermal Hall effect is an important probe for detecting chiral topological order and revealing the nature of chiral gapless edge states. The standard Kubo formula approach for the thermal Hall conductance $\kappa_{xy}$ based on the linear-response theory faces difficulties in practical application due to the lack of a reliable numerical method for calculating dynamical quantities in microscopic models at finite temperature. In this work, we propose an approach for calculating $\kappa_{xy}$ in two-dimensional lattice models displaying chiral topological order. Our approach targets at the edge current localized at the boundary which involves only thermal averages of local operators in equilibrium, thus drastically lowering the barrier for the calculation of $\kappa_{xy}$. We use the chiral $p$-wave superconductor (with and without disorder) and the Hofstadter model as benchmark examples to illustrate several sources of finite-size effects, and we suggest the infinite (or sufficiently long) strip as the best geometry for carrying out numerical simulations., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, published version

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third most lethal cancer worldwide. The lack of effective biomarkers for the early detection of HCC results in unsatisfactory curative treatments. Here, metabolite biomarkers were identified and validated for HCC diagnosis. A total of 1,448 subjects, including healthy controls and patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection, liver cirrhosis, and HCC, were recruited from multiple centers in China. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomics methods were used to characterize the subjects' serum metabolic profiles and to screen and validate the HCC biomarkers. A serum metabolite biomarker panel including phenylalanyl-tryptophan and glycocholate was defined. This panel had a higher diagnostic performance than did α-fetoprotein (AFP) in differentiating HCC from a high-risk population of cirrhosis, such as an area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve of 0.930, 0.892, and 0.807 for the panel versus 0.657, 0.725, and 0.650 for AFP in the discovery set, test set, and cohort 1 of the validation set, respectively. In the nested case-control study, this panel had high sensitivity (range 80.0%-70.3%) to detect preclinical HCC, and its combination with AFP provided better risk prediction of preclinical HCC before clinical diagnosis. Besides, this panel showed a larger area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve than did AFP (0.866 versus 0.682) to distinguish small HCC, and 80.6% of the AFP false-negative patients with HCC were correctly diagnosed using this panel in the test set, which was corroborated by the validation set. The specificity and biological relevance of the identified biomarkers were further evaluated using sera from another two cancers and HCC tissue specimens, respectively. Conclusion: The discovered and validated serum metabolite biomarker panel exhibits good diagnostic performance for the early detection of HCC from at-risk populations. (Hepatology 2018;67:662-675).

Background Cocoon abdomen is a relatively rare abdominal disease characterized by the total or partial encasement of the small intestinal by a dense fibro-collagenous membrane. Case presentation We reported an unusual case of idiopathic cocoon abdomen with congenital colon malrotation. Laparotomy and sac release were performed on the patient. The patient was no recurrence 6 months after operation. A literature review was also performed. Conclusion Preoperative diagnosis of abdominal cocoon is difficult. A careful history, physical examination and appropriate radiology may be helpful in making a definitive diagnosis. If conservative treatment can’t relieve symptoms effectively, surgery is currently considered to be important in the management of this disease.

Both innate and adaptive immune system play important roles in the onset and progression of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). However, the significance of natural killer (NK) cells for IBDs remains unclear. To understand the biology of colonic lamina propria natural killer (LPNK) cells in IBDs, we characterized LPNK cell metabolism in a murine acute colitis model. C57BL/6J mice were fed with 3% dextran sulfate sodium to establish the acute colitis model. Colonic LPNK cells were isolated from mice through flow cytometry. The expression of metabolic genes in LPNK cells was analyzed by transcriptome sequencing and quantitative RT-PCR. Glucose uptake, Seahorse assay, and ATP assay were conducted to assess the metabolic status of LPNK cells. Phos-flow assay was performed to evaluate cell signaling pathways in LPNK cells. In vitro stimulation and cytotoxicity assay were conducted to measure the function of LPNK cells. In acute colitis, LPNK cells upregulated the expression of genes related to glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation (oxphos), and enhanced glucose uptake capability. Intracellular ATP production, glycolysis and oxphos in LPNK cells were also promoted in acute colitis. mTORC1 signaling was essential for the metabolic reprogramming in LPNK cells in acute colitis. Although LPNK cells of diseased mice exhibited equivalent cytokine profile to normal LPNK cells upon stimulation with phorbol ester or IL-2, LPNK cells of diseased mice were more cytotoxic to target cells than normal LPNK cells. LPNK cells undergo metabolic reprogramming which might be a response to upcoming microbial infection in acute colitis.
