Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a mycotoxin that is produced by various species of Fusarium and is ubiquitous in food and feed. At low concentrations, it can cause metabolic disorders in animals and humans and, at high concentrations, it can lead to pathological changes in the body. The impact of DON on human/animal health and animal productivity has thus attracted a great deal of attention around the world. DON causes severe damage to the intestine, including compromised intestinal barrier, mucosal damage, weakened immune function, and alterations in gut microbiota composition. These effects exacerbate intestinal infections and inflammation in livestock and poultry, posing adverse effects on overall health. Furthermore, research into biological methods for DON detoxification is a crucial avenue for future studies. This includes the utilization of adsorption, enzymatic degradation, and other biological approaches to mitigate DON’s impact, offering new strategies for prevention and treatment of DON-induced diseases. Future research will focus on identifying highly efficient detoxifying microorganisms or enzymes to reduce DON levels in food and feed, thereby mitigating its risks to both animals and human health.

Abstract Background Pien Tze Huang (PZH), a traditional Chinese medicine formulation, is recognized for its therapeutic effect on colitis and colorectal cancer. However, its protective role and underlying mechanism in colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) remain to be elucidated. Methods A CAC mouse model was established using AOM/DSS. Twenty mice were randomly divided into four groups (n = 5/group): Control, PZH, AOM/DSS, and AOM/DSS + PZH groups. Mice in the PZH and AOM/DSS + PZH group were orally administered PZH (250 mg/kg/d) from the first day of experiment, while the control and AOM/DSS group received an equivalent volume of distilled water. Parameters such as body weight, disease activity index (DAI), colon weight, colon length, colon histomorphology, intestinal tumor formation, serum concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines, proliferation and apoptosis in colon tissue were assessed. RNA sequencing was employed to identify the differentially expressed transcripts (DETs) in colonic tissues and related signaling pathways. Wnt/β-Catenin Pathway-Related genes in colon tissue were detected by QPCR and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results PZH significantly attenuated AOM/DSS-induced weight loss, DAI elevation, colonic weight gain, colon shortening, histological damage, and intestinal tumor formation in mice. PZH also notably decreased serum concentration of IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α. Furthermore, PZH inhibited cell proliferation and promote apoptosis in tumor tissues. RNA-seq and KEGG analysis revealed key pathways influenced by PZH, including Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. IHC staining confirmed that PZH suppressed the expression of β-catenin, cyclin D1 and c-Myc in colonic tissues. Conclusions PZH ameliorates AOM/DSS-induced CAC in mice by suppressing the activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Abstract In the geothermal development of hot dry rock (HDR), both the drilling of the wellbore and the heat exchange of the heat reservoir involve the effects of different cold and hot conditions on the high-temperature rock mass. The testing machine for rock mechanics was used to conduct a uniaxial compression test and carry out micro testing on the treated samples; furthermore, with the help of scanning electron microscopy the fracture mechanism of granite subjected to different temperatures and cooling methods was studied. The results show: (1) With the gradual increase in temperature, the compressive strength of granite under the two cooling methods gradually decreases. (2) The failure modes of the samples under the two cooling methods are mainly shear failure of the "Y" type. The degree of damage of the sample under water cooling is significantly greater than that under natural cooling. Electron micrographs could confirm these results. (3) It can be obtained by testing the mineral composition and element changes of granite at different temperatures. When the temperature reaches 600℃, its change is more pronounced. The results of this study can provide a theoretical reference for the failure of the wellbore and the degree of fracture of the thermal reservoir rock mass during geothermal development.

Context Ulcerative colitis has been clinically treated with Qing Hua Chang Yin (QHCY), a traditional Chinese medicine formula. However, its precise mechanisms in mitigating chronic colitis are largely uncharted.Objective To elucidate the therapeutic efficiency of QHCY on chronic colitis and explore its underlying molecular mechanisms.Materials and methods A total ion chromatogram fingerprint of QHCY was analysed. Chronic colitis was induced in male C57BL/6 mice using 2% dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) over 49 days. Mice were divided into control, DSS, DSS + QHCY (0.8, 1.6 and 3.2 g/kg/d dose, respectively) and DSS + mesalazine (0.2 g/kg/d) groups (n = 6). Mice were intragastrically administered QHCY or mesalazine for 49 days. The changes of disease activity index (DAI), colon length, colon histomorphology and serum pro-inflammatory factors in mice were observed. RNA sequencing was utilized to identify the differentially expressed transcripts (DETs) in colonic tissues and the associated signalling pathways. The expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related protein and NF-κB signalling pathway-related proteins in colonic tissues was detected by immunohistochemistry staining.Results Forty-seven compounds were identified in QHCY. Compared with the DSS group, QHCY significantly improved symptoms of chronic colitis like DAI increase, weight loss, colon shortening and histological damage. It notably reduced serum levels of IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α. QHCY suppressed the activation of PERK–ATF4–CHOP pathway of ER stress and NF-κB signalling pathways in colonic tissues.Discussion and conclusions The findings in this study provide novel insights into the potential of QHCY in treating chronic colitis patients.

Biogeographical barriers to gene flow are central to plant phylogeography. In East Asia, plant distribution is greatly influenced by two phylogeographic breaks, the Mekong-Salween Divide and Tanaka-Kaiyong Line, however, few studies have investigated how these barriers affect the genetic diversity of species that are distributed across both. Here we used 14 microsatellite loci and four chloroplast DNA fragments to examine genetic diversity and distribution patterns of 49 populations of Populus rotundifolia, a species that spans both the Mekong-Salween Divide and the Tanaka-Kaiyong Line in southwestern China. Demographic and migration hypotheses were tested using coalescent-based approaches. Limited historical gene flow was observed between the western and eastern groups of P. rotundifolia, but substantial flow occurred across both the Mekong-Salween Divide and Tanaka-Kaiyong Line, manifesting in clear admixture and high genetic diversity in the central group. Wind-borne pollen and seeds may have facilitated the dispersal of P. rotundifolia following prevalent northwest winds in the spring. We also found that the Hengduan Mountains, where multiple genetic barriers were detected, acted on the whole as a barrier between the western and eastern groups of P. rotundifolia. Ecological niche modeling suggested that P. rotundifolia has undergone range expansion since the last glacial maximum, and demographic reconstruction indicated an earlier population expansion around 600 Ka. The phylogeographic pattern of P. rotundifolia reflects the interplay of biological traits, wind patterns, barriers, niche differentiation, and Quaternary climate history. This study emphasizes the need for multiple lines of evidence in understanding the Quaternary evolution of plants in topographically complex areas.

The recently proposed ambient signal-based load modeling approach offers an important and effective idea to study the time-varying and distributed characteristics of power loads. Meanwhile, it also brings new problems. Since the load model parameters of power loads can be obtained in real-time for each load bus, the numerous identified parameters make parameter application difficult. In order to obtain the parameters suitable for off-line applications, load model parameter selection (LMPS) is first introduced in this paper. Meanwhile, the convolution neural network (CNN) is adopted to achieve the selection purpose from the perspective of short-term voltage stability. To begin with, the field phasor measurement unit (PMU) data from China Southern Power Grid are obtained for load model parameter identification, and the identification results of different substations during different times indicate the necessity of LMPS. Meanwhile, the simulation case of Guangdong Power Grid shows the process of LMPS, and the results from the CNN-based LMPS confirm its effectiveness.

Gesture interaction via surface electromyography (sEMG) signal is a promising approach for advanced human-computer interaction systems. However, improving the performance of the myoelectric interface is challenging due to the domain shift caused by the signal’s inherent variability. To enhance the interface’s robustness, we propose a novel adaptive information fusion neural network (AIFNN) framework, which could effectively reduce the effects of multiple scenarios. Specifically, domain adversarial training is established to inhibit the shared network’s weights from exploiting domain-specific representation, thus allowing for the extraction of domain-invariant features. Effectively, classification loss, domain diversence loss and domain discrimination loss are employed, which improve classification performance while reduce distribution mismatches between the two domains. To simulate the application of myoelectric interface, experiments were carried out involving three scenarios (intra-session, inter-session and inter-subject scenarios). Ten non-disabled subjects were recruited to perform sixteen gestures for ten consecutive days. The experimental results indicated that the performance of AIFNN was better than two other state-of-the-art transfer learning approaches, namely fine-tuning (FT) and domain adversarial network (DANN). This study demonstrates the capability of AIFNN to maintain robustness over time and generalize across users in practical myoelectric interface implementations. These findings could serve as a foundation for future deployments.

Hydrogen energy plays an important role in clean energy system and is considered the core energy source for future technological development owing to its lightweight nature, high calorific value, and clean combustion products. The electrocatalytic conversion of water into hydrogen is considered a highly promising method. An electrocatalyst is indispensable in the electrocatalytic process, and finding an efficient electrocatalyst is essential. However, the current commercial electrocatalysts (such as Pt/C and Ru) are expensive; therefore, there is a need to find an inexpensive and efficient electrocatalyst with high stability, corrosion resistance, and high electrocatalytic efficiency. In this study, we developed a cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalyst by incorporating molybdenum into nickel sulfide (Ni3S2) and subsequently tailoring its structure to achieve a one-dimensional (1D) needle-like configuration. The hydrogen production efficiency of nickel sulfide was improved by changing the ratio of Mo doping. By analyzing the electrochemical performance of different Mo-doped catalysts, we found that the Ni3S2-Mo-0.1 electrocatalyst exhibited the best electrocatalytic effect in 1 M KOH; at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, it exhibited overpotentials of 120 and 279 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively; at a higher current density of 100 mA cm−2, the HER and OER overpotentials were 396 and 495 mV, respectively. Furthermore, this electrocatalyst can be used in a two-electrode water-splitting system. Finally, we thoroughly investigated the mechanism of the overall water splitting of this electrocatalyst, providing valuable insights for future hydrogen production via overall-water-splitting.

During minimal invasive surgery (MIS), the laparoscope only provides a single viewpoint to the surgeon, leaving a lack of 3D perception. Many works have been proposed to obtain depth and 3D reconstruction by designing a new optical structure or by depending on the camera pose and image sequences. Most of these works modify the structure of the conventional laparoscopes and cannot provide 3D reconstruction of different magnification views. In this study, we propose a laparoscopic system based on double liquid lenses, which provide doctors with variable magnification rates, near observation, and real-time monocular 3D reconstruction. Our system composes of an optical structure that can obtain auto magnification change and autofocus without any physically moving element, and a deep learning network based on the Depth from Defocus (DFD) method, trained to suit inconsistent camera intrinsic situations and estimate depth from images of different focal lengths. The optical structure is portable and can be mounted on conventional laparoscopes. The depth estimation network estimates depth in real-time from monocular images of different focal lengths and magnification rates. Experiments show that our system provides a 0.68-1.44x zoom rate and can estimate depth from different magnification rates at 6fps. Monocular 3D reconstruction reaches at least 6mm accuracy. The system also provides a clear view even under 1mm close working distance. Ex-vivo experiments and implementation on clinical images prove that our system provides doctors with a magnified clear view of the lesion, as well as quick monocular depth perception during laparoscopy, which help surgeons get better detection and size diagnosis of the abdomen during laparoscope surgeries.

This paper summarizes the music demixing (MDX) track of the Sound Demixing Challenge (SDX’23). We provide a summary of the challenge setup and introduce the task of robust music source separation (MSS), i.e., training MSS models in the presence of errors in the training data. We propose a formalization of the errors that can occur in the design of a training dataset for MSS systems and introduce two new datasets that simulate such errors: SDXDB23_LabelNoise and SDXDB23_Bleeding.1 We describe the methods that achieved the highest scores in the competition. Moreover, we present a direct comparison with the previous edition of the challenge (the Music Demixing Challenge 2021): the best performing system achieved an improvement of over 1.6dB in signal-to-distortion ratio over the winner of the previous competition, when evaluated on MDXDB21. Besides relying on the signal-to-distortion ratio as objective metric, we also performed a listening test with renowned producers and musicians to study the perceptual quality of the systems and report here the results. Finally, we provide our insights into the organization of the competition and our prospects for future editions.

Abstract. Background:. The presence of fibrosis is a criterion for subtype classification in the newly updated hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) guidelines. The present study aimed to summarize differences in clinical characteristics and prognosis of non-fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (NFHP) and fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (FHP) and explore factors associated with the presence of fibrosis. Methods:. In this prospective cohort study, patients diagnosed with HP through a multidisciplinary discussion were enrolled. Collected data included demographic and clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, and radiologic and histopathological features. Logistic regression analyses were performed to explore factors related to the presence of fibrosis. Results:. A total of 202 patients with HP were enrolled, including 87 (43.1%) NFHP patients and 115 (56.9%) FHP patients. Patients with FHP were older and more frequently presented with dyspnea, crackles, and digital clubbing than patients with NFHP. Serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen, carbohydrate antigen 125, carbohydrate antigen 153, gastrin-releasing peptide precursor, squamous cell carcinoma antigen, and antigen cytokeratin 21-1, and count of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) eosinophils were higher in the FHP group than in the NFHP group. Abstract Epigenetic reprogramming occurs during reproduction to reset the genome for early development. In flowering plants, mechanistic details of parental methylation remodeling in zygote remain elusive. Here we analyze allele-specific DNA methylation in rice hybrid zygotes and during early embryo development and show that paternal DNA methylation is predominantly remodeled to match maternal allelic levels upon fertilization, which persists after the first zygotic division. The DNA methylation remodeling pattern supports the predominantly maternal-biased gene expression during zygotic genome activation (ZGA) in rice. However, parental allelic-specific methylations are reestablished at the globular embryo stage and associate with allelic-specific histone modification patterns in hybrids. These results reveal that paternal DNA methylation is remodeled to match the maternal pattern during zygotic genome reprogramming and suggest existence of a chromatin memory allowing parental allelic-specific methylation to be maintained in the hybrid.

Addressing the issues of the sand cat swarm optimization algorithm (SCSO), such as its weak global search ability and tendency to fall into local optima, this paper proposes an improved strategy called the multi-strategy integrated sand cat swarm optimization algorithm (MSCSO). The MSCSO algorithm improves upon the SCSO in several ways. Firstly, it employs the good point set strategy instead of a random strategy for population initialization, effectively enhancing the uniformity and diversity of the population distribution. Secondly, a nonlinear adjustment strategy is introduced to dynamically adjust the search range of the sand cats during the exploration and exploitation phases, significantly increasing the likelihood of finding more high-quality solutions. Lastly, the algorithm integrates the early warning mechanism of the sparrow search algorithm, enabling the sand cats to escape from their original positions and rapidly move towards the optimal solution, thus avoiding local optima. Using 29 benchmark functions of 30, 50, and 100 dimensions from CEC 2017 as experimental subjects, this paper further evaluates the MSCSO algorithm through Wilcoxon rank-sum tests and Friedman’s test, verifying its global solid search ability and convergence performance. In practical engineering problems such as reducer and welded beam design, MSCSO also demonstrates superior performance compared to five other intelligent algorithms, showing a remarkable ability to approach the optimal solutions for these engineering problems.

Hypothesis: Nanocapsules, consisting of a solid shell and a liquid core, are an interesting class of materials with numerous applications and various methods of synthesis. One common method for synthesis of nanoparticles is flash nanoprecipitation. For a multicomponent system consisting of a liquid (n-hexadecane) and solid (polystyrene), we hypothesize that nanocapsules will form from droplets created by the turbulent mixing in the nanoprecipitation process. We anticipate n-hexadecane molecules should phase-separate more rapidly from the non-solvent, thus becoming the core, while the more slowly diffusing polystyrene forms the shell. Additionally, we predict that the amount of both n-hexadecane and polystyrene used in creating these nanocapsules will influence capsule size. Experiments: Using flash nanoprecipitation, we synthesized nanocapsules of a polystyrene shell and liquid core of n-hexadecane. We varied the concentrations of both polystyrene and n-hexadecane and characterized the resulting dispersions using dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy. Findings: Our experiments demonstrate that flash nanoprecipitation can be employed to create nanocapsules with radii ranging from 50 to 200 nm, with radii of the n-hexadecane cores between 35 and 175 nm and polystyrene shells with thickness ranging from 7 to 62 nm. We used various methods of analysis to confirm this core/shell morphology and applied a droplet model to explain the dependence of particle size on initial concentrations of n-hexadecane and polystyrene.

Abstract Introduction The GAP model was widely used as a simple risk “screening” method for patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Objectives We sought to validate the GAP model in Chinese patients with IPF to evaluate whether it can accurately predict the risk for mortality. Methods A total of 212 patients with IPF diagnosed at China‐Japan Friendship Hospital from 2015 to 2019 were enrolled. The latest follow‐up ended in September 2022. Cumulative mortality of each GAP stage was calculated and compared based on Fine‐Gray models for survival, and lung transplantation was treated as a competing risk. The performance of the model was evaluated in terms of both discrimination and calibration. Osteoporosis (OP) is an age-related disease of bone metabolism, characterized by bone mass loss and bone microarchitecture deterioration, the poor osteogenesis microenvironment of OP caused hardly repairing of the bone defects. As a dynamic process to fuel cellular renovation, autophagy has been proved to play a vital role in regulating cell differentiation and maintaining bone homeostasis. Traditional bone repairing biomaterials are hardly repairing the bone defects under OP pathological microenvironment. Therefore, it is essential to development novel biomaterials to improve osteoporotic osteogenesis. Compared to biochemical cues, biophysical cues exhibited more advantages in biocompatible and side effects. Herein, inspired by the importance of enhanced autophagic response in osteoporotic environment, we intend to utilize the micro-/nano-structured hydroxyapatite (mnHA) bioceramics as the mimic structure of natural bone tissue to regulate autophagic activity in ovariectomy bone mesenchymal stem cells (OVX-BMSCs), finally promote to bone regeneration in OP condition. The results indicated that mnHA bioceramics promoted cell adhesion and osteogenesis of OVX-BMSCs, and enhanced autophagy level in OVX-BMSCs. In the calvarial defects of OVX-rats, the mnHA scaffold acquired excellent bone repair effect. According to the current findings, regulating the level of autophagy could be a promising strategy for improve osteoporotic osteogenesis in the future.

Abstract Background The Fe (II)- and α-ketoglutarate-dependent AlkB family dioxygenases are implicated in nucleotide demethylation. AlkB homolog1 (ALKBH1) is shown to demethylate DNA adenine methylation (6mA) preferentially from single-stranded or unpaired DNA, while its demethylase activity and function in the chromatin context are unclear. Results Here, we find that loss-of-function of the rice ALKBH1 gene leads to increased 6mA in the R-loop regions of the genome but has a limited effect on the overall 6mA level. However, in the context of mixed tissues, rather than on individual loci, the ALKBH1 mutation or overexpression mainly affects the expression of genes with a specific combination of chromatin modifications in the body region marked with H3K4me3 and H3K27me3 but depleted of DNA CG methylation. In the similar context of mixed tissues, further analysis reveals that the ALKBH1 protein preferentially binds to genes marked by the chromatin signature and has a function to maintain a high H3K4me3/H3K27me3 ratio by impairing the binding of Polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2) to the targets, which is required for both the basal and stress-induced expression of the genes. Conclusion Our findings unravel a function of ALKBH1 to control the balance between the antagonistic histone methylations for gene activity and provide insight into the regulatory mechanism of PRC2-mediated H3K27me3 deposition within the gene body region.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a life-threatening opportunistic pathogen, particularly in pregnant women, infants, and the elderly. Currently, maternal vaccination is considered the most viable long-term option for preventing GBS mother-to-infant infection, and two polysaccharide conjugate vaccines utilizing CRM197 as a carrier protein have undergone clinical phase II trials. Surface immunogenic protein (Sip), present in all identified serotypes of GBS strains so far, is a protective surface protein of GBS. In this study, the type Ia capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of GBS was utilized as a model to develop candidate antigens for a polysaccharide conjugate vaccine by coupling it with the Sip of GBS and the traditional carrier protein CRM197. Serum analysis from immunized New Zealand rabbits and CD1 mice revealed that there was no significant difference in antibody titers between the Ia-Sip group and Ia-CRM197 group; however, both were significantly higher than those observed in the Ia polysaccharide group. Opsonophagocytosis and passive immune protection results using rabbit serum indicated no significant difference between the Ia-Sip and Ia-CRM197 groups, both outperforming the Ia polysaccharide group. Furthermore, serum from the Ia-Sip group had a cross-protective effect on multiple types of GBS strains. The challenge test results in CD1 mice demonstrated that the Ia-Sip group provided complete protection against lethal doses of bacteria and also showed cross-protection against type III strain. Our study demonstrates for the first time that Ia-Sip is immunogenic and provides serotype-independent protection in glycan conjugate vaccines, which also indicates Sip may serve as an excellent carrier protein for GBS glycan conjugate vaccines and provide cross-protection against multiple GBS strains.

The finite element numerical simulation results of deep pit deformation are greatly influenced by soil layer parameters, which are crucial in determining the accuracy of deformation prediction results. This study employs the orthogonal experimental design to determine the combinations of various soil layer parameters in deep pits. Displacement values at specific measurement points were calculated using PLAXIS 3D under these varying parameter combinations to generate training samples. The nonlinear mapping ability of the Back Propagation (BP) neural network and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) were used for sample global optimization. Combining these with actual onsite measurements, we inversely calculate soil layer parameter values to update the input parameters for PLAXIS 3D. This allows us to conduct dynamic deformation prediction studies throughout the entire excavation process of deep pits. The results indicate that the use of the PSO-BP neural network for inverting soil layer parameters effectively enhances the convergence speed of the BP neural network model and avoids the issue of easily falling into local optimal solutions. The use of PLAXIS 3D to simulate the excavation process of the pit accurately reflects the dynamic changes in the displacement of the retaining structure, and the numerical simulation results show good agreement with the measured values. By updating the model parameters in real-time and calculating the pile displacement under different working conditions, the absolute errors between the measured and simulated values of pile top vertical displacement and pile body maximum horizontal displacement can be effectively reduced. This suggests that inverting soil layer parameters using measured values from working conditions is a feasible method for dynamically predicting the excavation process of the pit. The research results have some reference value for the selection of soil layer parameters in similar areas.

Abstract Atmospheric nitrous acid (HONO) chemistry is of critical importance to air quality during polluted haze events, especially in China. However, current air quality models (such as WRF-CHEM, WRF-CMAQ, Box-MCM) generally underestimate the concentration of HONO, leading to a lack of fundamental understanding of haze pollution. Here, by combining field observations during haze events in Beijing and modeling results, we developed the new parameterization scheme for heterogeneous nitrogen dioxide (NO2) reaction on aerosol surfaces with the synergistic effects of relative humidity and ammonia, which has not been considered in existing air quality models. Including NO2 heterogeneous reactions into modeling significantly improves the estimation accuracy of HONO and OH levels, with the contribution reaching up to 91% and 78% during pollution episodes. The OH derived by HONO can partly explain high concentrations of particulate matter. Together, our work provides a new approach to illustrate the formation of HONO, OH, and haze with the consideration of heterogeneous NO2 → HONO chemistry.

Background: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been reported as an emerging treatment regimen for fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), with a paucity of solid evidence. Accordingly, a systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to address the effectiveness of HBOT on FMS. Methods: We searched the Cochrane Database, EMBASE, Medline, PubMed, Clinicaltrials.gov, and PsycINFO, and the reference sections of original studies and systematic reviews from inception to May 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the treatment of FMS with HBOT were included. Outcome measures included pain, Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), Tender Points Count (TPC), and side effects. Results: Four RCTs, with 163 participants, were included for analysis. Pooled results showed that HBOT could benefit FMS with significant improvement at the end of treatment, including FIQ (SMD = −1.57, 95% CI −2.34 to −0.80) and TPC (SMD = −2.50, 95% CI −3.96 to −1.05). However, there was no significant effect on pain (SMD = −1.68, 95% CI, −4.47 to 1.11). Meanwhile, HBOT significantly increased the incidence of side effects (RR = 24.97, 95% CI 3.75 to 166.47). Conclusions: Collectively, emerging evidence from RCTs indicates that HBOT can benefit FMS patients in FIQ and TPC throughout the observation time phrases. Although HBOT has some side effects, it does not cause serious adverse consequences.

In China, gastric cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related death, after lung cancer. At present, the morbidity and mortality rates of gastric cancer are increasing, and targeted therapy for gastric cancer has become a research hotspot. Herein, we report a patient with multiple metastases from advanced gastric cancer. After identifying MET gene amplification, initial treatment induced regression of the tumor. However, in later stages, due to the overexpression or mutation of HER-2, KRAS, TP53, and other genes, the targeted drug therapy became ineffective, and the disease progressed rapidly, leading to the death of the patient.

IntroductionNondestructive detection of thin-skinned fruit bruising is one of the main challenges in the automated grading of post-harvest fruit. The structured-illumination reflectance imaging (SIRI) is an emerging optical technique with the potential for detection of bruises.MethodsThis study presented the pioneering application of low-cost visible-LED SIRI for detecting early subcutaneous bruises in ‘Korla’ pears. Three types of bruising degrees (mild, moderate and severe) and ten sets of spatial frequencies (50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450 and 500 cycles m-1) were analyzed. By evaluation of contrast index (CI) values, 150 cycles m-1 was determined as the optimal spatial frequency. The sinusoidal pattern images were demodulated to get the DC, AC, and RT images without any stripe information. Based on AC and RT images, texture features were extracted and the LS-SVM, PLS-DA and KNN classification models combined the optimized features were developed for the detection of ‘Korla’ pears with varying degrees of bruising.Results and discussionIt was found that RT images consistently outperformed AC images regardless of type of model, and LS-SVM model exhibited the highest detection accuracy and stability. Across mild, moderate, severe and mixed bruises, the LS-SVM model with RT images achieved classification accuracies of 98.6%, 98.9%, 98.5%, and 98.8%, respectively. This study showed that visible-LED SIRI technique could effectively detect early bruising of ‘Korla’ pears, providing a valuable reference for using low-cost visible LED SIRI to detect fruit damage.

BackgroundNumerous studies and research papers have provided evidence suggesting that tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS) play a crucial role in combating and suppressing tumor growth and progression. Despite the wealth of information on the significance of TLS in various types of cancer, their prognostic value in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers remains uncertain. Therefore, this meta-analysis investigated the prognostic value of TLS in GI cancers.MethodsWe searched Web of science, Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane Library for studies that met the requirements as of May 1, 2023, and the hazard ratio (HR) and the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were included in the analysis. The bioinformatics analysis results based on the TCGA database are used to supplement our research.ResultsThe meta-analysis included 32 studies involving 5778 patients. The results of comprehensive analysis showed that TLS-High is associated with prolonged OS (HR=0.525,95%CI:0.447-0.616 (P < 0.001), RFS (HR=0.546,95%CI:0.461-0.647, P < 0.001), DFS (HR=0.519,95%CI:0.417-0.646, P < 0.001) and PFS (HR=0.588,95%CI:0.406-0.852, P=0.005) in GI cancer. Among the patients who received immunotherapy, TLS-High is associated with significantly prolonged OS (HR=0.475, 95%CI:0.282-0.799, P=0.005) and PFS(HR=0.576, 95%CI:0.381-0.871, P=0.009). It is worth noting that subgroup analysis showed that there was no significant relationship between TLS and OS(HR=0.775, 95%CI:0.570-1.053,P=0.103) in CRC. And when Present is used as the cut-off criteria of TLS, there is no significant correlation between TLS and OS (HR=0.850, 95%CI:0.721-1.002, P=0.053)in HCC.ConclusionTLS is a significant predictor of the prognosis of GI cancers and has the potential to become a prognostic biomarker of immunotherapy-related patients.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/#recordDetails, identifier CRD42023443562.

Abstract Backgrounds We aimed to test whether the prediction of presurgical metabolic syndrome for postsurgical survival outcomes of gastric cancer hinges upon cigarette smoking status. Methods This study is a part of the ongoing Fujian prospective investigation of cancer (FIESTA) study. Patients with gastric cancer received radical resection of primary gastric cancer between January 2000 and December 2010, with the latest follow‐up ended in December 2015. The 1:1 propensity score matching analysis was adopted to balance confounders between smokers and never‐smokers. Effect‐size estimates are expressed as hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Model performance was evaluated using the Hosmer and Lemeshow test and 10‐fold cross‐validated area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). Statistical analyses were completed with SAS software (v9.4). Results Total 2779 patients with gastric cancer were analyzed, including 2223 smokers and 556 never‐smokers. Median follow‐up time was 45.6 months. Cigarette smoking was not associated with postsurgical survival differences. Self-concept clarity is considered a crucial indicator of mental health. Although several studies have examined the correlation between self-concept clarity and loneliness, few studies have investigated the underlying mechanism. Based on the evolutionary theory of loneliness and social penetration theory, this cross-sectional study focused on cognitive and behavioral factors in interpersonal communication situations, aiming to explore the relationship between self-concept clarity and loneliness as well as its internal mechanism. An online questionnaire survey comprised 1145 college students in China to assess their self-concept clarity, fear of negative evaluation, self-disclosure, and loneliness. After controlling for demographic variables, the results showed that self-concept clarity was not only able to directly and negatively predict loneliness but also indirectly predict loneliness through the independent mediating effects of fear of negative evaluation and self-disclosure, as well as the chain-mediating effect of fear of negative evaluation to self-disclosure. This study provides important implications for cognitive and behavioral intervention strategies to alleviate people’s loneliness and improve their mental health.

By adopting a systematic literature and science mapping review, this paper aims to explore the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on organizational justice and project performance. A total of 47 bibliographic records from the Scopus database were analyzed. The results revealed the annual publication trends of research articles and relevant peer-reviewed journals in the studied domain. It was found that while AI technology has made significant progress in several fields, its application areas in project management and organizational justice are still relatively low. Moreover, it objectively discussed the co-occurrence analysis of keywords, co-authors, countries/regions, and documents in the fields, revealing the current research topics. The main research topics include the (1) AI’s influence on organizational justice, decision analysis, and digital transformation, (2) fostering organizational justice and AI’s role in enhancing project performance, and (3) improving organizational performance approaches. Furthermore, this paper proposed research gaps and future research directions, including (1) advancing business intelligence strategies, (2) unlocking AI technology potential on organizational justice and project performance, (3) the adaption of cultural, diversity, environmental, and social factors, (4) the impact of AI on complex and challenging leadership styles, and (5) developing a comprehensive understanding of the agile framework. The findings of this paper could contribute to a better understanding of how AI shapes project/construction management and organizational justice, providing practical solutions for innovative development for researchers and policymakers.

ABSTRACT Psychrobacter is an important bacterial genus that is widespread in Antarctic and marine environments. However, to date, only two complete Psychrobacter phage sequences have been deposited in the NCBI database. Here, the novel Psychrobacter phage vB_PmaS_Y8A, infecting Psychrobacter HM08A, was isolated from sewage in the Qingdao area, China. The morphology of vB_PmaS_Y8A was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, revealing an icosahedral head and long tail. The genomic sequence of vB_PmaS_Y8A is linear, double-stranded DNA with a length of 40,226 bp and 44.1% G+C content, and encodes 69 putative open reading frames. Two auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) were identified, encoding phosphoadenosine phosphosulfate reductase and MarR protein. The first AMG uses thioredoxin as an electron donor for the reduction of phosphoadenosine phosphosulfate to phosphoadenosine phosphate. MarR regulates multiple antibiotic resistance mechanisms in Escherichia coli and is rarely found in viruses. No tRNA genes were identified and no lysogeny-related feature genes were detected. However, many similar open reading frames (ORFs) were found in the host genome, which may indicate that Y8A also has a lysogenic stage. Phylogenetic analysis based on the amino acid sequences of whole genomes and comparative genomic analysis indicate that vB_PmaS_Y8A contains a novel genomic architecture similar only to that of Psychrobacter phage pOW20-A, although at a low similarity. vB_PmaS_Y8A represents a new family-level virus cluster with 22 metagenomic assembled viral genomes, here named Minviridae. IMPORTANCE Although Psychrobacter is a well-known and important bacterial genus that is widespread in Antarctic and marine environments, genetic characterization of its phages is still rare. This study describes a novel Psychrobacter phage containing an uncharacterized antibiotic resistance gene and representing a new virus family, Minviridae. The characterization provided here will bolster current understanding of genomes, diversity, evolution, and phage-host interactions in Psychrobacter populations.

Summary: In the context of industry 4.0, automatic sorting is becoming prevalent in production lines. Herein, we developed a bionic sensing system to achieve real-time object recognition. The system consists of 9 single-layer triboelectric nanogenerators (SL-TENGs) as touch sensors and 3 comb-shaped TENGs (CS-TENGs) as bending sensors, with a sensitivity of 110 V/kPa and stable output after 20,000 press cycles. These sensors were attached to a manipulator composed of three soft actuators, serving as soft robotic fingers. An enhanced electrical output of these sensors was achieved successfully, demonstrating their feasibility in detecting grasping location, contact pressure, and bending curvature. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) with 98.96% accuracy extracted information from the sensors, enabling the manipulator to serve as an intelligent sensing system with multi-modality perception ability. This robotic manipulator successfully integrated TENG-based self-powered sensors, soft actuators, and artificial intelligence, demonstrating the potential for future digital twin applications, particularly in automatic component sorting.

Rapid advances in wearable sensing technology have demonstrated unprecedented opportunities for artificial intelligence. In comparison with the traditional hand‐held electrolarynx, a wearable and intelligent artificial throat with sound‐sensing ability is a more comfortable and versatile method to assist disabled people with communication. Herein, a piezoresistive sensor with a novel configuration is demonstrated, which consists of polystyrene (PS) spheres as microstructures sandwiched between silver nanowires and reduced graphene oxide layers. In fact, changes in the device's conducting patterns are obtained by spay‐coating the various weight ratios and sizes of the PS microspheres, which is a fast and convenient way to establish microstructures for improving sensitivity. The wearable artificial throat device also exhibits high sensitivity, fast response time, and ultralow intensity level detection. Moreover, the device's excellent mechanical–electrical performance allows it to detect subtle throat vibrations that can be converted into controllable sounds. In this case, an intelligent artificial throat is achieved by combining a deep learning algorithm with a highly flexible piezoresistive sensor to successfully recognize five different words (help, sick, patient, doctor, and COVID) with an accuracy exceeding 96%. Herein, new opportunities in voice control as well as other human‐machine interface applications are opened.

Pseudoalteromonas is a ubiquitous and abundant genus of marine bacteria commonly associated with algae. In this study, a novel siphoviral-morphological bacteriophage, vB_PhoS_XC, was isolated from the coastal seawaters of Qingdao (China) during a bloom of the Ulva prolifera (U. prolifera) green tide. The morphology of this phage (icosahedron head 51 ± 1 nm in diameter; a tail length of 86 ± 1 nm) was characterized through transmission electron microscope. The biological properties of this virus showed a short latent period (45 minutes), a large burst size (241 virions per cell) and a relatively wide range of temperatures/pH level tolerance (-20°C to 45°C and pH 4 to pH 10, respectively). The vB_PhoS_XC has a 46,490-bp double-stranded DNA genome with a G+C content of 40.0%, and encodes 72 open reading frames (ORFs). Thirty-five of these ORFs were assigned into known functions based on BLAST-based algorithm against NR database of GenBank. In addition, eco-genomic analysis provides the evidence of vB_PhoS_XC accompanied by bloom of U. prolifera, and confirmed the high expression of two phosphatase-metabolism-related auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs). This study provides new insights into the functional and ecological roles of the Pseudoalteromonas phage vB_PhoS_XC, shedding light on the virological study approach combined with traditional isolation and meta-omics data.

Abstract. Background:. Patients with pneumoconiosis have an elevated risk of contracting pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and need particular attention. However, extensive population-based studies on the prevalence of PTB in patients with pneumoconiosis have not been reported in China since 1992. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of PTB in patients with pneumoconiosis based on its social determinants and risk factors in China. Methods:. Based on the Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) framework, data were obtained from a questionnaire survey of patients with pneumoconiosis from China's 27 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) from December 2017 to June 2021. By chi-square and multivariate logistic regression analyses, the epidemiological characteristics of PTB in the patients were identified based on its prevalence and odds ratio (OR) and associated social determinants and risk factors. The population attributable fractions (PAFs) of significant risk factors were also calculated. Results:. The prevalence of PTB in patients with pneumoconiosis (n = 10,137) was 7.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 7.0–8.0%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that risk factors included in-hospital exposure to patients with PTB (OR = 3.30, 95% CI: 2.77–3.93), clinically diagnosed cases (OR = 3.25, 95% CI: 2.42–4.34), and northeastern regions (OR = 2.41, 95% CI: 1.76–3.31). In addition, lack of work-related injury insurance (WRII), being born in a rural area, being unemployed, living in western regions, household exposure to patients with PTB, smoking, being underweight, complications of pulmonary bullae or pneumothorax, hospitalization history, and former drinkers among the rural patients were also statistically significant risk factors. Being born in a rural area, lack of WRII and in-hospital exposure to patients with PTB had higher PAFs, which were 13.2% (95% CI: 7.9–18.5%), 12.5% (95% CI: 8.3–16.7%), and 11.6% (95% CI: 8.8–14.3%), respectively. Conclusion:. The prevalence of PTB in pneumoconiosis remains high in China; it is basically in line with the CSDH models and has its characteristics.

Abstract Background Recent years, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is thought to be a disease of alveoli as well as small airways. This study aimed to demonstrate the clinical feature, predictor, and prognosis of small airway dysfunction (SAD) in Chinese patients with IPF. Methods We enrolled 416 patients with IPF who hospitalized in Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital from 2000 to 2014 in this study, and the follow-up ended at December 2016. We collected demographic information, clinical examination results, spirometry results, HRCT results, and blood gas results during the study. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the predictor for SAD. The COX proportional hazard model was used to analysis the prognosis effect of SAD. Results Among all the participants, 165 (39.66%) patients had SAD. FEV1 (% predicted) and FEV3/FVC were significantly associated with SAD in patients with IPF. IPF patients with lower FEV1 (% predicted, OR 30.04, 95% CI 9.61–93.90) and FEV3/FVC (OR 77.76, 95% CI 15.44–391.63) had increased risk for SAD. Patients with SAD were associated with significantly increased risk of mortality in patients with IPF (HR 1.73, 95% CI 1.02–2.92), as well as in IPF patients without other pulmonary comorbidities (COPD, emphysema, and asthma). Conclusions Spirometry-defined SAD was like 40% in patients with IPF. Lower FEV1 (% predicted) and FEV3/FVC were main predictors for SAD. IPF patients with SAD showed poorer prognosis.

IntroductionVibrio is an important bacterial genus containing many pathogenic species. Although more and more Vibrio phages were isolated, the genome, ecology and evolution of Vibrio phages and their roles in bacteriophage therapy, have not been fully revealed.MethodsNovel Vibrio phage vB_ValR_NF infecting Vibrio alginolyticus was isolated from the coastal waters of Qingdao during the Ulva prolifera blooms, Characterization and genomic feature of phage vB_ValR_NF has been analysed using phage isolation, sequencing and metagenome method.Results and DiscussionPhage vB_ValR_NF has a siphoviral morphology (icosahedral head 114±1 nm in diameter; a tail length of 231±1 nm), a short latent period (30 minutes) and a large burst size (113 virions per cell), and the thermal/pH stability study showed that phage vB_ValR_NF was highly tolerant to a range of pHs (4-12) and temperatures (-20 - 45 °C), respectively. Host range analysis suggests that phage vB_ValR_NF not only has a high inhibitory ability against the host strain V. alginolyticus, but also can infect 7 other Vibrio strains. In addition, the phage vB_ValR_NF has a double-stranded 44, 507 bp DNA genome, with 43.10 % GC content and 75 open reading frames. Three auxiliary metabolic genes associated with aldehyde dehydrogenase, serine/threonine protein phosphatase and calcineurin-like phosphoesterase were predicted, might help the host V. alginolyticus occupy the survival advantage, thus improving the survival chance of phage vB_ValR_NF under harsh conditions. This point can be supported by the higher abundance of phage vB_ValR_NF during the U. prolifera blooms than in other marine environments. Further phylogenetic and genomic analysis shows that the viral group represented by Vibrio phage vB_ValR_NF is different from other well-defined reference viruses, and can be classified into a new family, named Ruirongviridae. In general, as a new marine phage infecting V. alginolyticus, phage vB_ValR_NF provides basic information for further molecular research on phage–host interactions and evolution, and may unravel a novel insight into changes in the community structure of organisms during the U. prolifera blooms. At the same time, its high tolerance to extreme conditions and excellent bactericidal ability will become important reference factors when evaluating the potential of phage vB_ValR_NF in bacteriophage therapy in the future.

Understanding the molecular basis of cancer initiation and progression is critical in developing effective treatment strategies. Recently, mutations in genes encoding histone proteins that drive oncogenesis have been identified, converting these essential proteins into “oncohistones”. Understanding how oncohistone mutants, which are commonly single missense mutations, subvert the normal function of histones to drive oncogenesis requires defining the functional consequences of such changes. Histones genes are present in multiple copies in the human genome with 15 genes encoding histone H3 isoforms, the histone for which the majority of oncohistone variants have been analyzed thus far. With so many wildtype histone proteins being expressed simultaneously within the oncohistone, it can be difficult to decipher the precise mechanistic consequences of the mutant protein. In contrast to humans, budding and fission yeast contain only two or three histone H3 genes, respectively. Furthermore, yeast histones share ~90% sequence identity with human H3 protein. Its genetic simplicity and evolutionary conservation make yeast an excellent model for characterizing oncohistones. The power of genetic approaches can also be exploited in yeast models to define cellular signaling pathways that could serve as actionable therapeutic targets. In this review, we focus on the value of yeast models to serve as a discovery tool that can provide mechanistic insights and inform subsequent translational studies in humans.

Spoofing interference is one of the most emerging threats to the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS); therefore, the research on anti-spoofing technology is of great significance to improving the security of GNSS. For single spoofing source interference, all the spoofing signals are broadcast from the same antenna. When the receiver is in motion, the pseudo-range of spoofing signals changes nonlinearly, while the difference between any two pseudo-ranges changes linearly. Authentic signals do not have this characteristic. On this basis, an anti-spoofing method is proposed by jointly monitoring the linearity of the pseudo-range difference (PRD) sequence and pseudo-range sum (PRS) sequence, which transforms the spoofing detection problem into the sequence linearity detection problem. In this paper, the model of PRD and PRS is derived, the hypothesis based on the linearity of PRD sequence and PRS sequence is given, and the detection performance of the method is evaluated. This method uses the sum of squares of errors (SSE) of linear fitting of the PRD sequence and PRS sequence to construct detection statistics, and has low computational complexity. Simulation results show that this method can effectively detect spoofing interference and distinguish spoofing signals from authentic signals.

Drug delivery nanosystems (DDnS) is widely developed recently. Gelatin is a high-potential biomaterial originated from natural resources for anticancer DDnS, which can effectively improve the utilization of anticancer drugs and reduce side effects. The hydrophilic, amphoteric behavior and sol-gel transition of gelatin can be used to fulfill various requirements of anticancer DDnS. Additionally, the high number of multifunctional groups on the surface of gelatin provides the possibility of crosslinking and further modifications. In this review, we focus on the properties of gelatin and briefly elaborate the correlation between the properties and anticancer DDnS. Furthermore, we discuss the applications of gelatin-based DDnS in various cancer treatments. Overall, we have summarized the excellent properties of gelatin and correlated with DDnS to provide a manual for the design of gelatin-based materials for DDnS.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the most common injuries in forensic medicine, the identification of which is of particular importance in forensic practice. To reveal the circumstances and trends of TBI in the forensic field, we used the Web of Science (WoS) database for comprehensive retrieval. We made a metrological analysis of 1,089 papers in the past 50 years (1972–2021). The United States and Germany have the most forensic research on TBI. Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) has been the focus of attention for many years, and much effort has been devoted to its diagnosis in forensic pathology. Infants and children are the subgroups of most concern, especially in infant and child abuse cases. Research on identifying shaken baby syndrome has received increasing attention in recent years. Overall, our study provides a comprehensive list and analysis of the articles regarding TBI in legal medicine, which may shed light on recognizing the trends and research hotspots in this field.

By using a Gaussian process prior and a location-scale mixture representation of the asymmetric Laplace distribution, we develop a Bayesian analysis for the composite quantile single-index regression model. The posterior distributions for the unknown parameters are derived, and the Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithms are also given. The proposed method is illustrated by three simulation examples and a real dataset.

ObjectiveUric acid to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR), the ratio of uric acid to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, is a newly proposed marker of metabolic abnormalities. There are few previous studies directly investigating the relationship between UHR and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), especially in short stature populations, however, short stature children and adolescents are more likely to have metabolic disorders. This research aimed to investigate the relationship between the UHR and ALT in children and adolescents with short stature.MethodsIn this cross-sectional analysis, the clinical data of 1,510 children with height below −2 SD who were evaluated at the Department of Endocrinology, Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical University from 1 March 2013 to 31 December 2021, were selected. Anthropometric and biochemical indicators were measured. The relationship between UHR and ALT was analysed.ResultsThe univariate analysis results showed that UHR was positively associated with ALT (β = 0.43, P < 0.0001). Furthermore, after adjusting for possible confounding factors, a non-linear relationship was detected between UHR and ALT through smooth curve fitting, and the inflection point of UHR was 10.93% after multivariate piecewise linear regression analysis. ALT increased with UHR elevation when the UHR was greater than 10.93% (β = 0.69, 95% CI 0.39, 0.98; P < 0.0001). However, we did not observe a significant relationship when the UHR was less than 10.93% (P = 0.9229).ConclusionOur study demonstrated that in Chinese children and adolescents with short stature, UHR may be associated with the regulation of ALT levels, and this relationship merits further investigation.

Abstract Background The present study aimed 1) to examine the effects of epidemic-related job stressors, perceived social support and organizational support on the burnout and well-being of Chinese healthcare workers in the period of COVID-19 regular epidemic prevention and control and 2) to investigate the moderating effects of social support and organizational support on the relationship between job stressors and burnout and well-being within the theoretical framework of the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model. Methods A sample of healthcare workers (N = 3477) from 22 hospitals in Beijing, China participated in the cross-sectional investigation in October 2020 and reported epidemic-related job stressors, perceived social support, organizational support, burnout, anxiety and depression symptoms. Results 1) Medical doctors, females, people aged from 30 to 50, and those who worked in the second line during the pandemic reported higher scores of psychological symptoms and burnout in the period of regular epidemic prevention and control; 2) Epidemic-related job stressors positively predicted burnout, anxiety, and depression among healthcare workers; 3) Perceived social support and organizational support were negatively related to reported burnout, anxiety and depression symptoms; 4) Social support reduced the adverse effects of epidemic-related job stressors on anxiety and depression but enhanced the association between stressors and burnout; 5) Organizational support mitigated the adverse effects of epidemic-related job stressors on depression. Conclusion The results shed light on preventing burnout and enhancing the psychological well-being of healthcare workers under epidemic prevention and control measures by reducing epidemic-related job stressors and strengthening personal and organizational support systems.

Coagulation and sedimentation process is one of the most popular processes in drinking water treatment. Hydrodynamic breakage has a significant impact on the evolution of floc characteristics and the efficiency of turbidity removal. In this work, the effects of hydrodynamic breakage on floc size, fractal dimension, and floc morphology were investigated with an in-situ recognition system. The experiments were conducted in a continuous flocculation and sedimentation reactor equipped with perforated plates to provide different hydrodynamic breakage conditions. The experimental results indicated that the hydrodynamic conditions significantly influenced the floc destabilization and restructuring processes. A low hydrodynamic shear force provided by P1 led to the increase of both bigger sized flocs but accompanied with small particles (0–10 μm). Excessive velocity gradient provided by P3 produced smaller and looser flocs. An appropriate velocity gradient (i.e., the flow velocity through the perforated plate P2 at 18.9 × 10−3m s−1) was conducive for the formation of larger and more compact structures, with higher average floc size and fractal dimension. This flocculation condition in turn resulted in effective improvements in the turbidity removal efficiency. Floc evolution models were described based on the mechanism of the breakage and restructuring process. HIGHLIGHTS Hydrodynamic effects on flocs properties were revealed in a flocculation and sedimentation reactor.; Evolutions of flocs was recorded by an in-situ recognition system.; Moderate breakage (G = 69 s−1) promoted the generation of larger flocs.; Moderate breakage helped to increase the settleability of flocs.;

Ultrasonic scanning is the most commonly used method for detecting breast cancer. Traditional breast ultrasound mainly relies on manual examination, which requires doctors with rich clinical experience. The scanning path planning of the robot for breast ultrasound examination based on binocular vision and non-uniform rational B-Splines (NURBS) is proposed in this paper to solve the limitations of traditional examination methods. First, breast images are acquired by the binocular camera. The depth information of the images is obtained through stereo matching, and the 3D point cloud reconstruction of the breast model is completed. Second, the spatial index algorithm based on the K-dimension tree (Kd-tree) and uniform sampling method are selected to denoise and down-sample the point cloud model to complete the preliminary optimization of the model. The point cloud information for the scanning path is extracted according to the method of point cloud extraction and the principle of normal vector calculation. Then, the interpolation optimization of the scanning path based on the NURBS curve is completed. The optimized scanning path is transformed into the robot motion path. Finally, the robot motion is simulated and analyzed, and the experimental results show that the rationality of robot operation and the smoothness of robot motion meet the requirements of path planning defined in this paper. The error analysis experiment shows that the path planned by this method can ensure the efficiency and accuracy of ultrasound examination.

Ten Candida species strains were isolated from the first known fatal case of rhinofacial and rhino–orbital–cerebral candidiasis. Among them, five strains of Candida parapsilosis complex were isolated during the early stage of hospitalization, while five strains of Candida tropicalis were isolated in the later stages of the disease. Using whole-genome sequencing, we distinguished the five strains of C. parapsilosis complex as four Candida metapsilosis strains and one Candida parapsilosis strain. Antifungal susceptibility testing showed that the five strains of C. parapsilosis complex were susceptible to all antifungal drugs, while five C. tropicalis strains had high minimum inhibitory concentrations to azoles, whereas antifungal-drug resistance gene analysis revealed the causes of azole resistance in such strains. For the first time, we analyzed the microevolutionary characteristics of pathogenic fungi in human hosts and inferred the infection time and parallel evolution of C. tropicalis strains. Molecular clock analysis revealed that azole-resistant C. tropicalis infection occurred during the first round of therapy, followed by divergence via parallel evolution in vivo. The presence/absence variations indicated a potential decrease in the virulence of genomes in strains isolated following antifungal drug treatment, despite the absence of observed clinical improvement in the conditions of the patient. These results suggest that genomic analysis could serve as an auxiliary tool in guiding clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Objective: primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune disease, of which the most common complication is interstitial lung disease (ILD). This study aimed to analyze the clinical value of Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and carbohydrate antigen 153(CA153) in patients with pSS complicated with ILD (pSS-ILD), given that only few studies have evaluated this. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Serum KL-6 levels (U/mL) were measured using chemiluminescence immunoassay, and concentrations of serum tumor markers were determined using the immunofluorescence method in 64 cases of pSS-ILD (pSS-ILD group), 23 cases without ILD (non-ILD group), and 45 healthy controls. The correlation between KL-6 and tumor markers as well as lung function was analyzed, and the factors that were associated with pSS-ILD were screened. Results: The serum KL-6 was more abnormally increased in patients with pSS-ILD, and the serum KL-6, CEA, carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125), and CA153 levels were significantly higher in the pSS-ILD group than in the non-ILD and healthy control groups (p < 0.05). KL-6, CEA, and CA153 were negatively correlated with forced vital capacity (FVC%), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1%), total lung capacity (TLC%), and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO%) (all p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic analysis showed that KL-6 was an independent factor associated with pSS-ILD. Conclusions: In conclusion, we evaluated the association between clinical values of KL-6, tumor markers, and pSS-ILD, and found that KL-6 and tumor markers such as CEA, CA153, and CA125 in patients with pSS-ILD were higher than in patients with non-ILD, and KL-6 was more abnormally increased and significantly associated with ILD development in patients with pSS.

Flexible sensors for hand gesture recognition and human–machine interface (HMI) applications have witnessed tremendous advancements during the last decades. Current state‐of‐the‐art sensors placed on fingers or embedded into gloves are incapable of fully capturing all hand gestures and are often uncomfortable for the wearer. Herein, a flake‐sphere hybrid structure of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) doped with polystyrene (PS) spheres is fabricated to construct the highly sensitive, fast response, and flexible piezoresistive sensor array, which is ultralight in the weight of only 2.8 g and possesses the remarkable curved‐surface conformability. The flexible wrist‐worn device with a five‐sensing array is used to measure pressure distribution around the wrist for accurate and comfortable hand gesture recognition. The intelligent wristband is able to classify 12 hand gestures with 96.33% accuracy for five participants using a machine learning algorithm. To showcase our wristband, a real‐time system is developed to control a robotic hand via the classification results, which further demonstrates the potential of this work for HMI applications.
