In the current study, the corrosion behavior of HSLA-65 steel was investigated in a simulated marine environment inoculated with P. aeruginosa. In the electrochemical measurements, the negative shift in OCP, lower values of corrosion potential, pitting potential, and increased corrosion current density of the HSLA-65 steel in the biotic medium signified its low corrosion resistance in the presence of P. aeruginosa. The observation of the surface morphology revealed biofilm formation on the steel surface in the P. aeruginosa-inoculated culture medium, which significantly accelerated the pitting corrosion of the steel. The pit observed on the steel surface in the biotic medium was about 3.9 times deeper than in the sterile medium. In addition, the weight loss of the steel in the biotic medium was about 2.4 times higher compared to that in the sterile medium. These findings suggest that the P. aeruginosa biofilm significantly accelerated the corrosion of HSLA-65 steel in the simulated marine environment.

A close relationship exists between the crystallographic characteristics of a bainitic matrix and formation of martensite/austenite (M/A) constituents. In this work, the isothermal transformation kinetics and crystallographic characteristics of low-carbon bainitic (LCB) steel were investigated to elucidate the formation mechanism of M/A constituents and twin-related V1/V2 variant pairs (Σ3 boundaries). The formation of M/A constituents depends on the bainitic transformation kinetics, which are influenced by the carbon concentration and isothermal temperature. An increase in the carbon concentration or transformation temperature promotes the formation of blocky M/A constituents by increasing the activation energy of the grain boundary and autocatalytic nucleation processes. In addition, increasing the carbon concentration or lowering the transformation temperature increases the strength of the austenite phase and promotes autocatalytic nucleation, thereby producing more twin-related V1/V2 variant pairs. Therefore, the increase in the carbon concentration increases the number of twin-related V1/V2 variant pairs while also causing the formation of blocky M/A constituents. To overcome this limitation, a novel heat treatment process design is proposed that can significantly eliminate blocky M/A constituents and generate high-density twin-related V1/V2 variant pairs.

Abstract Background Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) is a parasitic helminth that causes a globally prevalent neglected zoonotic disease, and worms at different developmental stages (muscle larvae, adult worms, newborn larvae) induce immune attack at different infection sites, causing serious harm to host health. Several innate immune cells release extracellular traps (ETs) to entrap and kill most pathogens that invade the body. In response, some unicellular pathogens have evolved a strategy to escape capture by ETs through the secretion of nucleases, but few related studies have investigated multicellular helminths. Results In the present study, we observed that ETs from neutrophils capture adult worms of T. spiralis, while ETs from macrophages trap muscle larvae and newborn larvae, and ETs had a killing effect on parasites in vitro. To defend against this immune attack, T. spiralis secretes plancitoxin-1, a DNase II-like protein, to degrade ETs and escape capture, which is essential for the survival of T. spiralis in the host. Conclusions In summary, these findings demonstrate that T. spiralis escapes ET-mediated capture by secreting deoxyribonuclease as a potential conserved immune evasion mechanism, and plancitoxin-1 could be used as a potential vaccine candidate.

The effect of different welding heat inputs on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the simulated coarse grained heat affected zone (CGHAZ) of high-strength wind power steel with yield strength of 500 MPa has been investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Charpy impact tests have demonstrated that there exists an optimum heat input of ∼20 kJ/cm that allows optimum impact toughness to be obtained for the CGHAZ. It was shown that this is related to the refined bainitic structure and the highest density of high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) with misorientation angle of more than 45°. In crystallographic visualization studies, it was shown that the weakest variant selection occurs for the bainite transformation in the optimal heat input, leading to the highest density of HAGBs with each Closed-packet group containing two or three Bain groups and showing a staggered arrangement structure. The contribution that can effectively deflect and prevent crack propagation during impact experiments has to come from the block boundary. However, it was also found that the center segregation induced by C and Mn reduces the low-temperature impact toughness of the core sample before and after simulated welding, and affects the fluctuations of impact toughness and fatigue performance of simulated CGHAZ. Mn segregation can have a genetic effect on the welding heat affected zone, inducing a lower temperature martensitic transformation, which in turn leads to a decrease in low-temperature toughness and fatigue crack arrest performance.

Peptide-functionalized hydrogel is one of commonly used biomaterials to introduce hydrogel-induced vessel regeneration. Despite many reports about the discoveries of high-active peptides (or ligands) for regeneration, the study on the conjugating methods for the hydrogel functionalization with peptides is limited. Here, we compared the vasculogenic efficacy of the peptide-functionalized hydrogels prepared by two commonly used conjugating methods, 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylamino propyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and Click methods, through cell models, organ-on-chips models, animal models, and RNA sequencing analysis. Two vascular-related cell types, the human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and the adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), have been cultured on the hydrogel surfaces prepared by EDC/Click methods. It showed that the hydrogels prepared by Click method supported the higher vasculogenic activities while the ones made by EDC method compromised the peptide activities on hydrogels. The vasculogenesis assays further revealed that hydrogels prepared by Click method promoted a better vascular network formation. In a critical ischemic hindlimb model, only the peptide-functionalized hydrogels prepared by Click method successfully salvaged the ischemic limb, significantly improved blood perfusion, and enhanced the functional recoveries (through gait analysis and animal behavior studies). RNA sequencing studies revealed that the hydrogels prepared by Click method significantly promoted the PI3K-AKT pathway activation compared to the hydrogels prepared by EDC method. All the results suggested that EDC method compromised the functions of the peptides, while Click method preserved the vascular regenerating capacities of the peptides on the hydrogels, illustrating the importance of the conjugating method during the preparation of the peptide-functionalized hydrogels.

Abstract Background Obesity is increasingly recognized as a grave public health concern globally. It is associated with prevalent diseases including coronary heart disease, fatty liver, type 2 diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Prior research has identified demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle, and genetic factors as contributors to obesity. Nevertheless, the influence of occupational risk factors on obesity among workers remains under-explored. Investigating risk factors specific to steelworkers is crucial for early detection, prediction, and effective intervention, thereby safeguarding their health. Methods This research utilized a cohort study examining health impacts on workers in an iron and steel company in Hebei Province, China. The study involved 5469 participants. By univariate analysis, multifactor analysis, and review of relevant literature, predictor variables were found. Three predictive models—XG Boost, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF)—were employed. Results Univariate analysis and cox proportional hazard regression modeling identified age, gender, smoking and drinking habits, dietary score, physical activity, shift work, exposure to high temperatures, occupational stress, and carbon monoxide exposure as key factors in the development of obesity in steelworkers. Test results indicated accuracies of 0.819, 0.868, and 0.872 for XG Boost, SVM, and RF respectively. Precision rates were 0.571, 0.696, and 0.765, while recall rates were 0.333, 0.592, and 0.481. The models achieved AUCs of 0.849, 0.908, and 0.912, with Brier scores of 0.128, 0.105, and 0.104, log losses of 0.409, 0.349, and 0.345, and calibration-in-the-large of 0.058, 0.054, and 0.051, respectively. Among these, the Random Forest model demonstrated superior performance. Conclusions The research indicates that obesity in steelworkers results from a combination of occupational and lifestyle factors. Of the models tested, the Random Forest model exhibited superior predictive ability, highlighting its significant practical application.

Thermal conductivity (k), as an important thermal property of nuclear fuels, would be deteriorated due to fission products. Therefore, to investigate the effect of fission products on the thermal conductivity of nuclear fuels is essential. Two typical fission products: Xe and Kr with 0–2 % concentration are considered in this work. The lattice constants (L) of ThO2 increase due to fission products at all testing temperatures. The extent of increase in L due to Xe interstitials is the maximum. The fission products significantly reduce the thermal conductivity of ThO2. The extent of reduction in thermal conductivity of ThO2 by the defects follows the trend Xe (interstitials) > Xe (substitutional defects) > Kr (substitutional defects) > Kr (interstitials). Finally, the full-filled Xe/Kr bubble has a nearly identical thermal conductivity as an empty void or half-filled Xe/Kr bubble. The underlying reason may be that the thorium atoms have a lower mobility than uranium atoms. These calculated values can be used to predict the thermal properties of the irradiated ThO2.

Nuclear fuel performance would be deteriorated due to radiation defects. Therefore, investigating the effect of irradiation-induced defects on nuclear fuel properties is essential. Thermal conductivity is an important property of nuclear fuel. In this work, the influence of radiation defects on the thermal conductivity of ThO2 within 600–1500 K has been studied using molecular dynamics (MD) method. Three types of point defects have been investigated in the present work: Frenkel pairs, substitutional Xe and vacancies with concentrations from 0 to 1 %. The results indicate that these irradiation-induced point defects increase the lattice parameter (L) at all studied temperatures. The strength of the dependence of Xe atoms on L is the highest. The analytical models for pure ThO2 and defected ThO2 are developed and there is a good agreement between the MD derived results and the model. The thermal conductivity of ThO2 systems is decreased due to Frenkel pairs, substitutional Xe and vacancies. The thermal resistance to thermal conductivity due to three types of defects are different. The degree of reduction in thermal conductivity by Xe is the largest. The dependence of vacancy cluster size on thermal conductivity is analyzed. For the ThO2 system with 0.5 % porosity, the effect of vacancy cluster size on thermal conductivity is weak. For the ThO2 system with a fixed porosity of 2 %, there exists a critical cluster radius of about 0.6 nm, below which the thermal conductivity increases with the cluster size and above which the thermal conductivity almost remains unchanged. Finally, the thermal conductivity of the amorphous ThO2 is calculated and effects of the amorphous structure and Frenkel pairs on thermal conductivity are compared. The result shows that the thermal conductivity of ThO2 systems can be further degraded by the amorphous structure. All these results indicate irradiation-induced defects could degrade the thermal properties of ThO2 systems and should be considered seriously for estimation of radiation damages in nuclear fuels used in nuclear reactors.

Fe–Mn–xAl–C steel ingots have been fabricated by vacuum melting with Al compositions varied from x = 0 to 3 and 5 wt.%, respectively. After properly hot-forging and hot-rolling as well as solution heat treatments, impact toughness tests were carried out at 77 K using a standard full-size of Charpy impact V-notch configuration. It was found that the addition of Al element is more conducive to enhance the cryogenic toughness. The relationship between the cryogenic toughness and the Al composition has been revealed through detailed microstructural studies by electron back scatter diffraction and transmission-electron microscopy. The stack fault energy (SFE) increases with the increase of Al content at various temperature. The plastic deformation is dominated by deformation bands which are dominated by deformation twins (DTs) and ε-martensite at x = 0 and DTs at x = 3 and 5%, respectively. The DTs near fracture the notch-tip area increased in the order of the 0Al, 3Al, and 5Al steel. The DTs with high density, together with their contented dislocations, significantly contributed to the high cryogenic toughness of the studied high manganese steel with higher Al content. Banded ε-martensite will deterioration cryogenic toughness due to its large size compared to DTs at 0Al steel.

Abstract Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) represents a prevalent ailment, progressively surging within the ranks of coal mine laborers. The current study endeavors to elucidate the effects of dust exposure and smoking on COPD incidence amongst coal mine workers, while concurrently devising preventive strategies for this affliction. Method A nested case–control study was conducted encompassing 1,416 participants aged ≥ 18 years, spanning the duration from (2017–2018) until 2020. A meticulous matching process yielded a cohort of 708 COPD patients, each paired with a control subject, forming a harmonious 1:1 ratio. Multiple logistic regression analysis was employed to scrutinize the associations between smoking, dust exposure with COPD among coal workers. Results The COPD prevalence within the cohort of coal workers under investigation amounted to 22.66%, with an accompanying incidence density of 0.09/person-year. Following meticulous adjustment for confounding variables, it was discerned that cumulative dust exposure within the range of 47.19 ~ (OR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.05, 3.44), 101.27 ~ (OR: 1.99, 95% CI: 1.17, 3.39), as well as smoking indices of 72 ~ (OR: 1.85, 95% CI: 1.19, 2.88), 145 ~ (OR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.17, 2.61), 310 ~ (OR: 1.85, 95% CI: 1.23, 2.77) engender an escalated vulnerability to COPD among coal workers. Furthermore, interaction analysis discerned an absence of both multiplicative and additive interactions between dust exposure, smoking, and COPD occurrence amidst coal workers. Conclusion Dust exposure and smoking were unequivocally identified as precipitating risk factors for COPD incidence within the population of coal workers, albeit devoid of any discernible interaction between these two causal agents.

The discrete element method (DEM) is a vital numerical approach for analyzing the mechanical behavior of elastoplastic wet sand. However, parameter uncertainty persists within the mapping between constitutive relationships and inherent model parameters. We propose a Parameter calibration neural network based on Attention, Retention, and improved Transformer for Sequential data (PartsNet), which effectively captures the nonlinear mechanical behavior of wet sand and obtains the optimal parameter combination for the Edinburgh elasto-plastic adhesion constitutive model. Variational autoencoder-based principal component ordering is employed by PartsNet to reduce the high-dimensional dynamic response and extract critical parameters along with their weights. Gated recurrent units are combined with a novel sparse multi-head attention mechanism to process sequential data. The fusion information is delivered by residual multilayer perceptron, achieving the association between sequential response and model parameters. The errors in response data generated by calibrated parameters are quantified by PartsNet based on adaptive differentiation and Taylor expansion. Remarkable calibration capabilities are exhibited by PartsNet across six evaluation indicators, surpassing seven other deep learning approaches in the ablation test. The calibration accuracy of PartsNet reaches 91.29%, and MSE loss converges to 0.000934. The validation experiments and regression analysis confirmed the generalization capability of PartsNet in the calibration of wet sand. The improved sparse attention mechanism optimizes multi-head attention, resulting in a convergence speed of 21.25%. PartsNet contributes to modeling and simulating the precise mechanical properties of complex elastoplastic systems and offers valuable insights for diverse engineering applications.

Correlation between machined surface alterations and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of austenitic stainless steels is investigated. The machining-induced residual stress, roughness, micro-hardness and dislocation density were characterized and the surface/subsurface cracks were examined after SCC tests in boiling magnesium chloride solution. The results showed SCC crack initiation and early propagation were highly related to the machining-induced alterations. By establishing a quantitative relationship between the surface characteristics and surface crack density, the comprehensive impact of the residual stress, surface roughness as well as the dislocation density on SCC susceptibility is revealed. The predicted crack density is in good agreement with the measured data. As a result, the SCC susceptibility of the machined surface is described by the surface integrity properties.

Abstract Background The global incidence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rapidly escalating, positioning it as a principal public health challenge with significant implications for population well-being. Given its status as a cornerstone of China's economic structure, the steel industry employs a substantial workforce, consequently bringing associated health issues under increasing scrutiny. Establishing a risk assessment model for NAFLD within steelworkers aids in disease risk stratification among this demographic, thereby facilitating early intervention measures to protect the health of this significant populace. Methods Use of cross-sectional studies. A total of 3328 steelworkers who underwent occupational health evaluations between January and September 2017 were included in this study. Hepatic steatosis was uniformly diagnosed via abdominal ultrasound. Influential factors were pinpointed using chi-square (χ2) tests and unconditional logistic regression analysis, with model inclusion variables identified by pertinent literature. Assessment models encompassing logistic regression, random forest, and XGBoost were constructed, and their effectiveness was juxtaposed in terms of accuracy, area under the curve (AUC), and F1 score. Subsequently, a scoring system for NAFLD risk was established, premised on the optimal model. Results The findings indicated that sex, overweight, obesity, hyperuricemia, dyslipidemia, occupational dust exposure, and ALT serve as risk factors for NAFLD in steelworkers, with corresponding odds ratios (OR, 95% confidence interval (CI)) of 0.672 (0.487–0.928), 4.971 (3.981–6.207), 16.887 (12.99–21.953), 2.124 (1.77–2.548), 2.315 (1.63–3.288), 1.254 (1.014–1.551), and 3.629 (2.705–4.869), respectively. The sensitivity of the three models was reported as 0.607, 0.680 and 0.564, respectively, while the precision was 0.708, 0.643, and 0.701, respectively. The AUC measurements were 0.839, 0.839, and 0.832, and the Brier scores were 0.150, 0.153, and 0.155, respectively. The F1 score results were 0.654, 0.661, and 0.625, with log loss measures at 0.460, 0.661, and 0.564, respectively. R 2 values were reported as 0.789, 0.771, and 0.778, respectively. Performance was comparable across all three models, with no significant differences observed. The NAFLD risk score system exhibited exceptional risk detection capabilities with an established cutoff value of 86. Conclusions The study identified sex, BMI, dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia, occupational dust exposure, and ALT as significant risk factors for NAFLD among steelworkers. The traditional logistic regression model proved equally effective as the random forest and XGBoost models in assessing NAFLD risk. The optimal cutoff value for risk assessment was determined to be 86. This study provides clinicians with a visually accessible risk stratification approach to gauge the propensity for NAFLD in steelworkers, thereby aiding early identification and intervention among those at risk.

A flash tempering process has been demonstrated for low-carbon low-alloy lath martensite, which includes heating the sample to 750 °C (Ac1: 752 °C), dwelling at 750 °C for 2 s, and quenching directly to room temperature. The high temperature accelerated the spread of the supersaturated carbon atoms in the lath martensite, activated the dislocation migrations and thus their combining and annihilation, and promoted the mass recrystallisation. The reduced dwelling time inhibited the coarsening of the martensitic laths and suppressed the growth of the recrystallized structures. The combination of higher temperature and the shorter dwelling period, so-called flash tempering, gives rise to the same microstructure and mechanical properties as those obtained by the conventional tempering process (i.e., dwelling at 600 °C for 1 h). The high efficient flash tempering, possessing significantly reduced energy and time consumptions, may have important consequence in industrialization of tempering process.

Urban traffic congestion has become an increasingly serious problem, and the transportation industry is gradually becoming a high-energy-consuming industry. Intelligent Transportation System (ITSs) that integrate technologies such as electronic sensing, data transmission, and intelligent control have emerged as a new approach to fundamentally solving transportation problems. As one of the cores of intelligent transportation systems, multi-vehicle formation technology has the advantage of promoting vehicle information interaction, improving vehicle mobility, and enhancing traffic conditions. Due to the high cost and risk of conducting multi-vehicle formation experiments using real vehicles, experimenting with intelligent vehicles has become a viable option. Based on the leader–follower formation strategy, this study designed an intelligent vehicle formation system using the Arduino platform. It utilizes infrared sensors, ultrasonic sensors, and photoelectric encoders to perceive information about the vehicle fleet and the road. Information is aggregated to the master vehicle through ZigBee communication modules. The controller of the master vehicle applies a PID algorithm, combined with a differential steering model, to solve the speed instructions for each vehicle in the fleet. Motion control instructions are then transmitted to each slave vehicle through ZigBee communication modules, enabling the automatic adjustment of the fleet’s traveling speed and spacing. Additionally, a Bluetooth app has been designed for users to monitor and control the movement status of the fleet dynamically in real time. Experimental verification has shown that this research effectively improves intelligent fleets’ capabilities in environmental perception, intelligent decision-making, collaborative control, and motion execution. It also enhances road traffic efficiency and safety, providing new ideas and methods for the development of autonomous driving technology.

The effect of pre-weld heat treatment on the microstructure and low-temperature impact toughness of the coarse-grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) after simulated welding was systematically investigated through the utilization of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD). The Charpy impact test validated the presence of an optimal pre-weld heat treatment condition, resulting in the highest impact toughness observed in the CGHAZ. Three temperatures for pre-weld heat treatment (690, 720 and 750 °C) were used to obtain three different matrices (Steel 1, Steel 2, Steel 3) for simulated welding. The optimal pre-weld heat treatment is 720 °C for 15 min followed by water quench. Microstructure characterization showed that there is an evident microstructure comprising bainite (B) in Steel 1 and Steel 2 after pre-weld heat treatment, while the addition of martensite (M) with the pre-weld heat treatment temperature exceeds Ac1 by almost 60 °C (Steel 3). These differences in microstructures obtained from pre-weld heat treatment influence the refinement of high-temperature austenite during subsequent simulated welding reheating processes, resulting in distinct microstructural characteristics in the CGHAZ. After the optimal pre-weld heat treatment, Steel 2 subjected to single-pass welding thermal simulation demonstrates a refined microstructure characterized by a high density of high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) within the CGHAZ, particularly evident in block boundaries. These boundaries effectively prevent the propagation of brittle cracks, thereby enhancing the impact toughness.

In recent studies, the tumourigenesis and development of endometrial carcinoma (EC) have been correlated significantly with redox. We aimed to develop and validate a redox-related prognostic model of patients with EC to predict the prognosis and the efficacy of immunotherapy. We downloaded gene expression profiles and clinical information of patients with EC from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Gene Ontology (GO) dataset. We identified two key differentially expressed redox genes (CYBA and SMPD3) by univariate Cox regression and utilised them to calculate the risk score of all samples. Based on the median of risk scores, we composed low-and high-risk groups and performed correlation analysis with immune cell infiltration and immune checkpoints. Finally, we constructed a nomogram of the prognostic model based on clinical factors and the risk score. We verified the predictive performance using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and calibration curves. CYBA and SMPD3 were significantly related to the prognosis of patients with EC and used to construct a risk model. There were significant differences in survival, immune cell infiltration and immune checkpoints between the low-and high-risk groups. The nomogram developed with clinical indicators and the risk scores was effective in predicting the prognosis of patients with EC. In this study, a prognostic model constructed based on two redox-related genes (CYBA and SMPD3) were proved to be independent prognostic factors of EC and associated with tumour immune microenvironment. The redox signature genes have the potential to predict the prognosis and the immunotherapy efficacy of patients with EC.

Abstract Dyslipidemia is one of the known risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and its prevalence is increasing worldwide. At present, the study of dyslipidemia has gradually shifted from simple environmental or genetic factors to environment-gene interactions. In order to further explore the etiology and mechanism of dyslipidemia, we used occupational stress(OS) and LYPLAL1, APOC3 and SOD2 gene as research variables to explore their association with dyslipidemia.Here we used a case-control study to include Han workers from a coal mining enterprise in China to determine the association between study variables and dyslipidemia. Monofactor analysis showed that smoking, drinking, physical activity level, DASH diet score, sleep quality, BMI, hypertension, hyperuricemia, shift work, OS were significantly different between the two groups (P 0.05). Under specific circumstances, the liquefaction product of biomass polyol can be converted into hard polyurethane foam. In this study, the rigid foam material (RPUF) was created by reacting the liquefaction product of Salix psammophila with isocyanate. The mechanical properties, chemical structure, cell structure, and thermal stability of RPUF were characterized by mechanical properties tests, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The impact strength, compressive strength, and flexural strength of RPUF after hygrothermal treatment showed a downward trend. FTIR showed that the change of temperature and humidity did not affect the chemical structure of RPUF. SEM showed that the destruction of cell structure of RPUF was increased with the extension of time. TGA showed that the initial decomposition temperature of RPUF was reduced by periodic hydrothermal treatment, and the residual carbon rate decreased with the extension of treatment time.

Open innovation communities (OICs) have been expanding the scope of enterprises’ innovation activities, and their effective functioning hinges on the ongoing knowledge contributions from users. However, the research on the impact of contractual governance mechanisms on users’ knowledge-contribution behaviors has yet to be further explored. In this study, we provide a comprehensive definition of implicit contracts in OICs, clarify their dimensions, investigate their impact on users’ knowledge contribution, and explore how users’ network positions moderate these effects. Subsequently, we employ a questionnaire survey combined with web crawling to collect user data and empirically test the theoretical hypotheses. The results demonstrate that both user-user implicit contracts (i.e., user reciprocity, user trust, and user recognition) and user-community implicit contracts (i.e., community incentives, community trust, and community support) significantly and positively affect user knowledge contribution. Furthermore, users’ structural holes exert a significant positive moderating effect on these relationships. Notably, the moderating effect of network centrality is only significant in the influence of user-community implicit contracts, and not significant in the relationship between user-user implicit contracts and user knowledge contribution. The insights derived from this study offer valuable practical guidance for effectively operating and managing OICs.

Physics-informed DeepONet (PI_DeepONet) is utilized for the reconstruction task of structural displacement based on measured strain. For beam and plate structures, the PI_DeepONet is built by regularizing the strain–displacement relation and boundary conditions, referred to as geometric differential equations (GDEs) in this paper, and the training datasets are constructed by modeling strain functions with mean-zero Gaussian random fields. For the GDEs with more than one Neumann boundary condition, an algorithm is proposed to balance the interplay between different loss terms. The algorithm updates the weight of each loss term adaptively using the back-propagated gradient statistics during the training process. The trained network essentially serves as a solution operator of GDEs, which directly maps the strain function to the displacement function. We demonstrate the application of the proposed method in the displacement reconstruction of Euler–Bernoulli beams and Kirchhoff plates, without any paired strain–displacement observations. The PI_DeepONet exhibits remarkable precision in the displacement reconstruction, with the reconstructed results achieving a close proximity, surpassing 99%, to the finite element calculations.

The influence of centerline segregation on the low-temperature impact toughness of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of welded joints was studied by welding experiments on X70 steel plates rolled from continuous casting slabs with segregation grades of class 2 and class 3. The experimental results show that the impact toughness at HAZ from class 2 slab steel plate is more stable and has excellent low-temperature toughness than that of class 3 slab steel plate. The impact toughness of the HAZ of the class 3 slab steel plate is low to 100 J at −40 °C and has a severe fluctuation range (~150 J), and the delamination phenomenon is also observed in the fracture cross-section. The reason for this phenomenon is due to the enrichment of C and Mn elements in the centerline segregation zone. The formation of abnormal microstructure (martensite/bainite) in the segregation zone leads to stress concentration, which easily weakens the low-temperature toughness of the joint.

Soil moisture, as an important variable affecting water–heat exchange between land and atmosphere, is an important feedback to climate change. Soil moisture is of great concern in Northern China, where arable land is extensive, but water resources are distributed unevenly and extremely sensitive to climate change. Using measured soil moisture data collected by the China Meteorological Administration from 164 stations during 1980–2021, we explored the drivers of soil moisture variation by analyzing its spatiotemporal variability using linear regression, partial correlation analysis, and geostatistical methods. The results indicated that (1) soil moisture increased from northwest to southeast in Northern China, with the lowest soil moisture in the IM; (2) the overall trend of soil moisture in most regions decreased, especially in the arid northwest and northeast China. However, soil moisture in some regions began to increase gradually in recent years, such as in northwestern Xinjiang and the central-eastern part of IM; and (3) soil moisture in the whole region was negatively correlated with temperature and sunshine duration and positively correlated with precipitation and relative humidity. The results of the study can provide valuable guidance for timely agricultural irrigation and the adjustment of cropping structures, thereby ensuring agricultural production and food security.

This article uses scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) to study the effect of C and Mn segregation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of high-strength steel with 20 mm thickness used for wind power before and after simulated welding. A Gleeble-3500 (GTC, Dynamic Systems Inc., Poestenkill, NY, USA) was used to study the microstructure evolution of the simulated coarse-grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) of experimental steel under different welding heat inputs (10, 14, 20, 30 and 50 kJ/cm) and its relationship with low-temperature impact toughness (−60 °C). The results indicate that alloy element segregation, especially Mn segregation, significantly affects the impact toughness scatter of the steel matrix, as it induces the formation of low-temperature martensite or hard phase, such as M/A (martensite/austenite) constituent. In addition, segregation also reduces the low-temperature impact toughness of the simulated welding samples and increases the fluctuation range. For high-strength steel with yield strength higher than 460 MPa used for wind power generation, there is an optimal welding heat input (~20 kJ/cm), which enables the simulated coarse-grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) to obtain the highest impact toughness due to the formation of lath bainite (LB) and the finest crystallographic block units. Excessive or insufficient heat input can induce the formation of coarse granular bainite (GB) or lath martensite (LM), leading to a larger size of crystallographic block units, reducing the hindering effect of brittle crack propagation and deteriorating low-temperature impact toughness.

Cysticercosis pisiformis, a highly prevalent parasitic disease worldwide, causes significant economic losses in the rabbit breeding industry. Previous investigations have identified a novel microRNA, designated as novel-miR1, within the serum of rabbit infected with Cysticercus pisiformis. In the present study, we found that C. pisiformis-derived novel-miR1 was released into the rabbit serum via exosomes. Through computational analysis using TargetScan, miRanda, and PITA, a total of 634 target genes of novel-miR1 were predicted. To elucidate the functional role of novel-miR1, a dual-luciferase reporter assay was utilized and demonstrated that novel-miR1 targets rabbit Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2). Rabbit peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLCs) were transfected with novel-miR1 mimic and mimic NC, and the in vitro experiments confirmed that novel-miR1 suppressed the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 through the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathway. In vivo experiments demonstrated that novel-miR1 was significantly upregulated during the 1–3 months following infection with C. pisiformis in rabbits. Notably, this upregulation coincided with a downregulation of TLR2, P65, pP65, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in PBLCs. Collectively, these results indicate that the novel-miR1 derived from C. pisiformis inhibited the rabbits’ immune response by suppressing the NF-κB-mediated immune response. This immune modulation facilitates parasite invasion, survival, and establishment of a persistent infection.

Abstract Transforming growth factor β‐induced factor homeobox 1 (TGIF1) reportedly promotes the pathological processes of various malignant tumors. However, few studies have investigated the role of TGIF1 in gliomas. We aimed to explore the relationship between TGIF1 expression and the clinical characteristics of patients with glioma, including their overall survival. A total of thousands transcriptome datapoints were downloaded from public databases to determine the correlations between TGIF1 and various clinicopathological features using the Wilcoxon or Kruskal–Wallis tests. The Kaplan–Meier and Cox statistical methods were used to explore the prognostic significance of TGIF1. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was used to indirectly identify the pathological mechanisms modulated by TGIF1, and compounds that inhibit its expression were determined using a connectivity map (CMap). TGIF1 was significantly overexpressed in gliomas and was correlated with unfavorable prognostic factors and shorter overall survival. Cox analysis confirmed that TGIF1 expression was a significant predictor of poor prognosis in patients with glioma. GSEA revealed that the signaling pathways associated with TGIF1 expression in glioma included extracellular matrix receptor‐ and cell cycle‐modulating proteins. CMap analysis showed that the small molecules scriptaid, torasemide, dexpropranolol, ipratropium bromide, and harmine were potential negative regulators of TGIF1. Finally, in vitro experiments demonstrated that knockdown of TGIF1 significantly inhibited the proliferation and invasion of glioma cell. Taken together, our study, which is the first to comprehensively analyze TGIF1 in gliomas, revealed it to be a novel oncogene in terms of its association with this disease. As such, TGIF1 may be a potential therapeutic target for individualized treatment of patients with glioma.

Low quality (Q) factor is often the limiting factor for high performance carbon nanotube (CNT) resonators. The most commonly used approach to enhance the Q factor of CNTs is to reduce/eliminate the intrinsic defects. Herein, we show surprisingly that hole defects of suitable size and position are able to enhance the Q factor of CNT, which strongly contradicts to the common notion that the presence of defects promote intrinsic dissipation via defects dissipation. By analyzing the strain distribution, we find that such abnormal enhancement in Q factor of defected CNT originates from a coupling competition mechanism between the atomic mismatch around defected atoms and the thermoelastic damping. Although the presence of holes will introduce an additional defect dissipation source, suitable holes are capable of reducing the energy dissipation arisen from the thermoelastic damping, through changing the spatial strain field of defected CNT. This coupling competition mechanism provides a new route for designing high performance CNT resonators via defects engineering.

The interfacial energies between a eutectic Ga–In–Sn liquid alloy and single nanoscopic asperities of SiOx, Au, and PtSi have been determined in the temperature range between room temperature and 90 °C by atomic force spectroscopy. For all asperities used here, we find that the interfacial tension of the eutectic Ga–In–Sn liquid alloy is smaller than its free surface energy by a factor of two (for SiOx) to eight (for PtSi). Any significant oxide growth upon heating studied was not detected here, and the measured interfacial energies strongly depend on the chemistry of the asperities. We also observe a weak increase of the interfacial energy as a function of the temperature, which can be explained by the reactivity between SiOx and Ga and the occurrence of chemical segregation at the liquid alloy surface.

Abstract Background Occupational exposure may be associated with an increased risk of developing hyperuricemia. This study sheds lights on the association between occupational exposure and hyperuricemia in steelworkers. Method A nested case–control study was conducted within a cohort of workers in steel companies to explore the association between occupational exposure and hyperuricemia. The case group consisted of a total of 641 cases of hyperuricemia identified during the study period, while 641 non-hyperuricemia subjects with the same age and gender distribution were randomly selected from the cohort as the control group. Results The incidence rate of hyperuricemia among workers in the steel company was 17.30%, with an incidence density of 81.32/1,000 person-years. In comparison to the reference group, the risks of developing hyperuricemia for steelworkers undergoing ever shifts, current shifts, heat exposure, and dust exposure were 2.18 times, 1.81 times, 1.58 times and 1.34 times higher respectively. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were 1.87(1.12–3.13) and 2.02(1.21–3.37) for the cumulative number of days of night work at 0–1,972.80 and ≥ 1,972.80 (days), respectively. Compared to the group with the cumulative heat exposure of 0 (°C/year), the ORs (95% CI) for the risk of developing hyperuricemia in the groups with the cumulative heat exposure of 0–567.83 and ≥ 567.83 (°C/year) were 1.50(1.02–2.22) and 1.64(1.11–2.43), respectively. The OR (95% CI) for the risk of developing hyperuricemia was 1.56(1.05–2.32) at the cumulative dust exposure of ≥ 30.02 (mg/m3/year) compared to that at the cumulative dust exposure of 0 (mg/m3/year). Furthermore, there was a multiplicative interaction between heat exposure and dust exposure in the development of hyperuricemia. Conclusion Shift work, heat, and dust are independent risk factors for the development of hyperuricemia in steelworkers. Additionally, there is a multiplicative interaction between heat exposure and dust exposure in the development of hyperuricemia. Interventions for shift work, heat and dust may help to reduce the incidence rate of hyperuricemia and improve the health of steelworkers.

BackgroundThe current oil production determines oil workers’ occupational noise exposure. Without effective protection, noise will affect various aspects of worker’s body functions, including acting on the adrenal cortex system and resulting in renal function damage. ObjectiveTo evaluate the associations of noise exposure and its cumulative exposure level with renal function impairment of oil workers. MethodsOil workers from a collective medical examination in a hospital were selected as the study subjects. In accordance with the national standard Measurement of Physical Agents in the Workplace Part 8: Noise (GBZ/T 189.8—2007), noise exposure was measured three times at the oil workers' work site, and their average value was calculated to obtain the cumulative noise exposure (CNE). A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect general information such as socio-demographic characteristics, family history, lifestyles, and occupational history. All blood biochemical indicators were measured in the fasting state. Renal function impairment was judged based on the glomerular filtration rate. The relationship between CNE and renal function was analyzed using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) for workers with noise exposure. ResultsA total of 2 917 subjects were included in the study and their prevalence of renal function impairment was 14.2%. The univariate analysis results suggested statistically significant differences in the prevalence of renal function impairment among the oil workers grouped by having hypertension or not, gender, age, marital status, marital status, smoking, and alcohol consumption (P＜0.05); the prevalence of renal impairment was significantly higher in those with abnormal values of uric acid, total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, and fasting glucose than in those with normal values (P＜0.05); the oil workers with noise exposure [n=1565, 53.7%, equivalent sound level ≥80 dB(A)] showed a higher prevalence of renal function impairment than those without (P＜0.05). The results of multiple logistic regression analysis showed that being female (OR=2.811, 95%CI: 1.960-4.030), age at 31 years and above (OR31-40=3.502, 95%CI: 1.402-8.751; OR41-50=4.255, 95%CI: 1.759-10.291; OR≥51=7.179, 95%CI: 2.864-17.996), showing abnormal uric acid (OR=5.932, 95%CI: 4.486-7.843), having hypertension (OR=1.593, 95%CI: 1.230-2.063), alcohol consumption (OR=2.648, 95%CI: 1.346-5.212), and smoking (OR=1.816, 95%CI: 1.133-2.911) had higher risks of developing renal function impairment; besides, those exposed to noise had 1.351 times (95%CI: 1.073-1.702) higher risks of developing renal function impairment than non-exposed individuals. Noise-exposed oil workers in the renal impairment group had higher noise exposure intensity and CNE compared to the noise-exposed oil workers in the normal renal function group (P＜0.05), and the workers had an increased risk of renal function impairment when the CNE was >95.85 dB(A)·year versus CNE ≤ 95.85 dB(A)·year (OR=2.583, 95%CI: 1.956-3.411). ConclusionExposure to noise, higher noise exposure intensity, and higher level of CNE may be associated with developing renal function impairment in oil workers. Oil workers with CNE above 95.85 dB(A)·year are at an increased risk of renal impairment.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is one of the most serious diseases affecting human health today, and current research is focusing on gut flora. There is a correlation between intestinal flora imbalance and lung cancer, but the specific mechanism is not clear. Based on the “lung and large intestine being interior-exteriorly related” and the “lung-intestinal axis” theory. Here, based on the theoretical comparisons of Chinese and western medicine, we summarized the regulation of intestinal flora in NSCLC by active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese herbal compounds and their intervention effects, which is conducive to providing new strategies and ideas for clinical prevention and treatment of NSCLC.

More and more cars are installing urea selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to solve the problem of exhaust emissions, which often operates at high temperatures in the exhaust system and is prone to failure of the exhaust pipe due to high-temperature oxidation. And niobium containing ferritic stainless steel has been widely used in the manufacturing of automotive exhaust pipes. In order to extend the service life of ferrite stainless steel exhaust pipes, niobium plays a crucial role as an added alloying element. The solid solution and precipitation of niobium in ferritic stainless steel will give ferritic stainless steel more excellent high temperature resistance. The precipitation of Nb can change the organizational structure in steel and refine the grains. However, if the content is not properly controlled, large particles of (Nb, Ti) C will precipitate, which will reduce the high temperature oxidation resistance. In this paper, the high temperature oxidation behavior of two kinds of ferritic stainless steels with different Nb content at 700 °C, 800 °C and 900 °C was studied. The microstructure of the oxide film on the surface of the material, the thickness of the oxide layer on the cross section, the distribution of chemical composition, the existence form and distribution of Nb element were analyzed by SEM, EDS, XRD and TEM. The results show that the higher the niobium content, the better the high temperature oxidation resistance, and the higher the temperature, the more obvious the high temperature oxidation resistance of niobium. This is because the high Nb content steel is easy to precipitate NbN and other Nb-containing precipitates at the grain boundary, which is helpful to the high temperature resistance. In the case of less Nb content, its ability to generate (Nb, Ti) C precipitates and coarsen at high temperatures reduces its high-temperature resistance.

A novel YOLOv5 network is presented in this paper to quantify the degree of defects in continuously cast billets. The proposed network addresses the challenges posed by noise or dirty spots and different defect sizes in the images of these billets. The CBAM-YOLOv5 network integrates the channel and spatial attention of the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) with the C3 layer of the YOLOv5 network structure to better fuse channel and spatial information, with focus on the defect target, and improve the network’s detection capability, particularly for different levels of segregation. As a result, the feature pyramid is improved. The feature map obtained after the fourth down-sampling of the backbone network is fed into the feature pyramid through CBAM to improve the perceptual field of the target and reduce information loss during the fusion process. Finally, a self-built dataset of continuously cast billets collected from different sources is used, and several experiments are conducted using this database. The experimental results show that the average accuracy (mAP) of the network is 93.7%, which can achieve intelligent rating.

In recent years, quantitative methods have been increasingly used in interlanguage studies, but these studies have mostly focused on the micro level with an emphasis on certain syntactic structures, rather than the macro where interlanguage is perceived as a whole. There remains a paucity of quantitative studies on interlanguage from the typological perspective. With the majority of the studies focused on the written interlanguage, there is also a lack of sufficient research on its spoken modality. Based on a syntactically annotated corpus and using the quantitative linguistic metric of dependency direction, we have investigated the typological changes in the Chinese interlanguage in both written and spoken modalities. The findings are as follows: (1) the typological features of interlanguage vary across modalities at both macro and micro levels; (2) dependency direction is proved to be an inappropriate indicator to measure the general typological characteristics of interlanguage development due to its failure to reflect the changes in the spoken modality; (3) both macro and micro perspectives taken into consideration, typological errors in the interlanguage is more likely to occur in the spoken modality than in the written one, in which learners may be restricted by greater time pressure and cognitive load in utterance. These factors may affect the distribution of dependency direction in the oral modality, and may be the reason why it is not appropriate to use dependency direction as a measure of changes in mediated language typological features in the oral modality. It is expected that our study will bring insight into second language research with more objective and holistic evidence.

Anisakidosis is a food-borne parasitic disease (FBPD) caused by the third-stage larvae of the family Anisakidae. Therefore, it is important to develop a simple, rapid and equipment-free detection method for anisakids in fish samples or seafood since current methods are time-consuming and require complex instruments. In this study, a recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA)-based method was established for the first time to detect anisakids by targeting the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. The detection results were visualized by including SYBR Green I (SG) in the method. The sensitivity of RPA-SG assay was 102 copies per reaction of recombinant plasmid (within 20 min at 37°C), similar to quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). The assay had high specificity for detecting anisakids against other related parasites and host fish. In addition, the assay was further used to detect fresh marine fish contaminated with anisakids and it showed high precision. These results indicate that the novel RPA-SG assay suitable for visual detection of anisakids in the field and food safety control.

Summary: Liquid metals are increasingly applied in drug delivery, in vivo imaging, and biosensing. Herein, we describe a surface modification strategy, where cell membrane is introduced to encapsulate gallium (Ga) particles. We detail preparation steps of Ga microparticles by sonication, followed by Ga microparticles coating with purified tumor cell membranes and morphological assessment using TEM and cryo-TEM. We further describe cell uptake and establishment of tumor-bearing mouse models and steps to assess in vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo antitumor cryotherapy.For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Wang et al. Modifications of micro/nanostructure and photoelectric properties under swift ion irradiation (645 MeV Xe35+) of KTaO3 crystal with varying electronic energy losses (7.2–31.4 keV/nm) and ion velocities (0.18–5.00 MeV/u) have been studied by combining experimental and calculated approaches. The i-TS calculations combined with molecular dynamics simulations are compared with the experimental observations, revealing the inner track fine structures from individual spherical defects to continuous ion tracks with core–shell morphologies, and a quantitative relationship, including the melting (0.42 eV/atom), damage (0.75 eV/atom), and amorphous (1.71 eV/atom) thresholds, is established to successfully predict the inner disorder/amorphous proportions and track damage morphologies. The surface nanostructures of nanohillocks (isolated or partial overlaps) and nanopits (serious overlaps) directly depend on the combined action of the deposited potential and kinetic energies of incident ions, which induce local melting and sublimation in the near-surface region. Owing to the decreased recombination and the increased separation efficiency between electrons and holes, the higher photogenerated charge carrier mobility enhanced the photocurrent effect, further optimizing the photoconductivity performance in Xe35+-irradiated KTaO3. Therefore, controlled defect engineering using the ion irradiation technique, as an effective strategy, could design tailored nanostructure systems and regulate photoelectric properties, further promoting the development of novel technological applications.

Image matting is a fundamental technique used to extract a fine foreground image from a given image by estimating the opacity values of each pixel. It is one of the key techniques in image processing and has a wide range of applications in practical scenarios, such as in image and video editing. Deep learning has demonstrated outstanding performance in various image processing tasks, making it a popular research topic. In recent years, image matting methods based on deep learning have gained significant attention due to their superior performance. Therefore, this article presents a comprehensive overview of the deep learning-based image matting algorithms that have been proposed in recent years. This paper initially introduces frequently used datasets and their production methods, along with the basic principles of traditional image matting techniques. We then analyze deep learning-based matting algorithms in detail and introduce commonly used image matting evaluation metrics. Additionally, this paper discusses the application scenarios of image matting, conducts experiments to illustrate the limitations of current image matting methods, and outlines potential future research directions in this field. Overall, this paper can serve as a valuable reference for researchers that are interested in image matting.

Abstract Long‐term variation in the population density of introduced honey bees (Apis mellifera) has been shown to be associated with variations in floral traits in alpine lotus (Saussurea nigrescens). However, it remains to be determined whether a high density of honey bees affects the abundance of nectariferous plants and the species richness and abundance of native bumble bees. We predicted that a high density of introduced honey bees lasting three decades would decrease the species richness and abundance of native bumble bees but increase the abundance of honey bee host plant species. Here, field experiments were conducted to examine the diversity of nectariferous plants and native bumble bees along the typical gradients of honey bee density (high density of honey bees close to the apiary and low density of honey bees distant from the apiary). We investigated nectariferous plant abundance, floral and seed traits, and bumble bee species richness and abundance at sites with either high or low honey bee densities in an alpine meadow. Our results demonstrate that an increased population of introduced honey bees is associated with increased host plant abundance and flower/capitulum number per plant but decreased nectar volume per flower, seed mass, and species richness and abundance of native bumble bees. The bumble bee visitation rate was positively correlated with nectar volume per flower at sites close to and far from apiaries. The honey bee visitation rate was positively correlated with flower/capitulum number per plant at sites close to apiaries and nectar volume per flower at sites far from apiaries. Seed mass was negatively correlated with nectariferous plant abundance. Our findings show that introduced honey bees decrease the species richness and abundance of native bumble bees, attributed to an evolutionarily decrease in nectar resources among honey bee host plant species, but increase the abundance of nectariferous plants, attributed to the production of many small seeds by plants. This suggests that long‐term high‐density beekeeping affects the biodiversity of honey bee host plants and native bumble bees. Our results provide new insights into the mechanisms of maintaining the biodiversity of nectariferous plants and native bumble bees.

Xiaolei Liu, Yayan Feng, et al. report an annotated draft reference genome of the non-encapsulated Trichinella pseudospiralis, and perform comparative multi-omics analyses with encapsulated T. spiralis. Overexpression of TP12446, a key excretory/secretory gene, in a mouse C2C12 skeletal muscle cell line could induce inhibition of myotube formation and differentiation. These results provide insight into the mechanism of nurse cell formation and immunoevasion, as well as the identification of potential pharmacological and diagnostic targets for trichinellosis.

The formation of a canopy gap results in changes to the microenvironment which, in turn, affect litter decomposition and nutrient release. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects in differently sized gaps and non-gaps remain poorly understood. To address this gap in knowledge, we selected three large gaps (above 150 m2), three medium gaps (50–100 m2), three small gaps (30–50 m2), and three non-gaps with basically the same site conditions. We then used the litter bag method to investigate leaf and branch litter decomposition over a year in a Castanopsis kawakamii natural forest with the aim of characterizing the litter mass remaining and the nutrient release in canopy gaps and non-gaps. Our results revealed that the remaining litter mass of leaf and branch litter was lower in medium gaps compared to other gaps, and leaf litter decomposed faster than branch litter. Environmental factors were identified as the primary drivers of total carbon and nitrogen release during litter decomposition. Gap size (canopy openness), taxonomic Margalef index, the Brillouin index of soil microbes, soil total nitrogen content, soil pH value, and average air temperature were identified as the main factors driving carbon and nitrogen release from branch litter. In the late decomposition stage, the taxonomic Pielou index, soil total potassium content, soil water content, and average relative air humidity were the main drivers of nutrient release from branch litter. The soil water content and average relative air humidity were also found to be the main factors affecting the nutrient release from leaf litter throughout the different stages of decomposition. Overall, our study highlights the impact of canopy gaps on microenvironmental variation, taxonomic community diversity, and soil microbial functional diversity and how these factors ultimately influence litter decomposition and nutrient release. Our findings provide an important foundation for further research into soil nutrient cycling in subtropical natural forests.

FeCrAl is regarded as one of the most promising cladding materials for accident-tolerant fuel at nuclear fission reactors due to its comprehensive properties of inherent corrosion resistance, excellent irradiation resistance, high-temperature oxidation resistance, and stress corrosion cracking resistance. In this work, the irradiation response of FeCrAl irradiated by 2.4 MeV He2+ ions with a fluence of 1.1 × 1016 cm−2 at room temperature was studied using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and nanoindentation. The characterization results of structural and mechanical properties showed that only black-dot defects exist in irradiated FeCrAl samples, and that the hardness of the irradiated samples was 11.5% higher than that of the unirradiated samples. Similar to other types of radiation defects, black-dot defects acted as fixed defect obstacles and hindered the movement of slip dislocations moving under the applied load, resulting in a significant increase in the hardness of FeCrAl. Importantly, this work points out that irradiation-induced black-dot defects can significantly affect the mechanical properties of materials, and that their contribution to radiation hardening cannot be ignored.

The Chinese Visceral Adiposity Index (CVAI) is an indicator of visceral adiposity dysfunction used to evaluate the metabolic health of the Chinese population. Steelworkers are more likely to be obese due to their exposure to special occupational factors, and have a higher prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis (CAS). This study aimed to analyze the special relationship between CVAI and CAS among steelworkers. A total of 4075 subjects from a northern steel company were involved in the cross-sectional study. Four logistic regression models were developed to analyze the correlation between CVAI and CAS. In addition, the restricted cubic spline was applied to fit the dose–response association between CVAI and CAS risk. In the study, the prevalence of CAS was approximately 25.94%. After adjustment for potential confounders, we observed a positive correlation between CVAI and CAS risk. Compared to the first CVAI quartile, the effect value odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI in the second, third, and fourth CVAI quartile were 1.523 (1.159–2.000), 2.708 (2.076–3.533), and 4.101 (3.131–5.372), respectively. Additionally, this positive correlation was stable in all subgroups except for female. Furthermore, we also found a non-linear relationship between CVAI and CAS risk (p nonlinear < 0.05). Notably, CVAI could increase the risk of CAS when higher than 106. In conclusion, our study showed that CVAI might be a reliable indicator to identify high-risk populations of CAS among steelworkers.

The effect of carbon content in the base metals of high-strength steel on the microstructure and impact toughness of simulated welding focusing on a coarse-grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) at different heat inputs was systematically investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD). The Charpy impact test confirmed that there was an optimal heat input, which caused the CGHAZ to obtain the highest impact toughness. The optimal heat input is ~20 kJ/cm and remains unchanged with an increase in carbon content from 0.04 to 0.12 wt.%. However, the impact toughness of the CGHAZ decreases with the increase in carbon content at each heat input. Microstructure characterization showed that a CGHAZ with 0.04 wt.% carbon gradually changed from lath bainite (LB) to granular bainite (GB) with an increase in heat input, while it changed from lath martensite (LM) to LB and then to GB for a CGHAZ with 0.12 wt.% carbon. Although the density of high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) obtained at 20 kJ/cm in the high-carbon sample is higher than that of the low-carbon sample, its impact toughness is lower, which is related to the parallel structure of the lath bundles and the morphology the austenite penetration.

Development and safe application of nuclear energy depend on the performance of the structural materials. Mechanical property degradation of irradiated metals has been confirmed to be closely related with the interactions between dislocations and radiation defects. To understand the underlying interaction mechanism at atomic scale is significant for development of radiation resistant materials in future. In this work, three different kinetic mechanisms have been suggested by simulating the interactions between a 1/2[111] screw dislocation line and 1/2 〈111〉 interstitial dislocation loops with different orientations in the body-centered cubic (BCC) iron system. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicate that formation of a helical turn configuration, cross-slip movement, and diffusion of screw segments on loop core during pinning and unpinning process are primary features related to three new interaction mechanisms. Detailed analysis suggests that for a given screw dislocation line, the specific Burgers vector of a 1/2 〈111〉 interstitial dislocation loop and its size determine the dominated mechanism for a line-loop interaction. It is also found that the critical stress for a screw dislocation to cross a 1/2 〈111〉 dislocation loop is varied due to the interactions involved in these new mechanisms. All these results provide new insights into the evolution of microstructure in irradiated BCC iron.

Purpose The noninvasive monitoring of mild hyperthermia or thermal ablation is important to guarantee therapeutic safety and efficacy. The potential of ultrasound B-mode image texture features in monitoring temperature or coagulation zones studied in this article. Materials and methods The experiments carried out on eighteen in vitro porcine liver samples heated from 20°C to 60°C in the water bath. The ultrasound radiofrequency signal at different temperature collected to reconstruct B-mode ultrasound images. The texture features based on gray level histogram (GLH), gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), and gray level-gradient co-occurrence matrix (GGCM) extracted, respectively. Accordingly, we analyze the correlations between these texture features and temperature based on the experiment results. Results The results showed that five texture feature parameters closely related to temperature, including mean gray scale of GLH, homogeneity of GLCM, hybrid entropy, inverse difference moment, and correlation of GGCM. Some of these feature parameters have correlation coefficients larger than 0.9 within the temperature range of 20°C to 60°C. Conclusions The above-mentioned five feature parameters expected to apply for noninvasive monitoring of MH or TA.

Abstract Trichinellosis, which is caused by Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis), is a serious zoonosis. Pigs play an important role in the transmission of human trichinellosis. Characterizing the immune response to T. spiralis infection is key to elucidating host–parasite interactions. However, most studies on the immune response to T. spiralis infection have employed murine models. In this study, we investigated the immune response to T. spiralis infection in pigs. The results showed that the average numbers of larvae per gram (lpg) for the 100-muscle larvae (ML), 1000-ML, and 10 000-ML groups were 1.502, 35.947, and 398.811, respectively. The percentages of CD3+ T cells, B cells, CD4+ T cells, Treg cells, and Th17 cells were elevated in the infection groups compared to the control animals. In contrast, CD8+ T cell percentages were reduced after infection in the low-dose group. The number of neutrophils was increased at 3–17 days post-infection (dpi). Th1 cytokine IL-2 levels were significantly decreased at 7 dpi, and Th2 cytokine IL-4 levels were significantly elevated at 3 dpi. Treg cytokine IL-10 levels were significantly elevated between 7 dpi and 30 dpi. Th17 cytokine IL-17A levels were significantly increased beginning at 11 dpi. These results confirmed that pigs infected with T. spiralis predominantly induced Th2 and Treg immune responses, which suppress the Th1 immune responses. This study provides novel insights into the immune response of pigs infected with T. spiralis.

Abstract Background Clonorchiasis, caused by Clonorchis sinensis (C. sinensis) infection, is a serious food-borne zoonotic disease that is often asymptomatic or shows only mild symptoms, which leads to delayed treatment and chronic clonorchiasis and results in various complications, such as cholelithiasis, cholangitis, cholecystitis and cholangiocarcinoma. However, acute shock caused by C. sinensis infection has not been reported. Here, for the first time, we describe a fatal case of acute shock caused by C. sinensis infection. Case presentation A patient with a history of eating raw or undercooked freshwater fish was hospitalized with acute shock caused by severe abdominal pain. Physical examination suggested acute abdomen with severe abdominal pain and rigidity. Computed tomography (CT) detection indicated acute cholecystitis and cholelithiasis. After cholecystectomy, several liver flukes were found in the drainage tube. Furthermore, morphological analysis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) identified the pathogen as C. sinensis. The liver gradually restored normal function after anthelmintic therapy with praziquantel. Conclusions In this fatal case, C. sinensis infection was the cause of acute shock, which is rarely found in the clinic environment. This report aims to increase awareness of the hazards and complications related to clonorchiasis. The PCR diagnosis method used in this report might be helpful in reducing the misdiagnosis of clonorchiasis and unnecessary cholecystectomy.

The meta-analysis was performed to assess the prevalence of T. spiralis in domestic pigs in China. The potential studies from seven databases (Pubmed, Web of science, Scopus, Google Scholar, CNKI, Wanfang, CBM) were searched. I2, Cochran’s Q statistic and the funnel plot and Egger’s test were used to assess heterogeneity and publication bias, respectively. In this study, a total of 179 articles were captured in the initially screened. Of these, we finally obtained 39 significant articles (including 43 studies involving in 551,097 pigs) for the final analysis. We calculated using a random-effects model, and we found the overall infection rate was 0.04 (95% CI 0.03–0.06). The highest prevalence region was Guangxi. The funnel plot and Egger’s test showed no publication bias in our meta-analysis. In addition, this high heterogeneity index was suggestive of potential variations which could be due to regions, quality scores, detection methods, publication years, or samplings. These results indicated that T. spiralis were still prevalent in some areas in China. This highlights the need for an increased focus on implementing affordable, appropriate control programs to reduce economic losses and T. spiralis infection in domestic pigs in China.
