ABSTRACTUrban green space (UGS) is important to the urban ecological environment. It has physical characteristics and social function characteristics and plays an important role in urban climate change, sustainable development goals (SDG) and residents’ health. However, existing researches mostly focus on the extraction of UGS physical features, neglecting the importance of UGS social functions, resulting in the unresolved problem of multi-type and fine-grained functional mapping of UGS. Therefore, based on natural language processing (NLP) and multi-source data fusion, this paper proposes a multi-type and fine-grained UGS function mapping method. First, the social functional standards of UGS have been re-established, with a total of 19 categories. Second, the semantic information in the POI data name text is extracted using the deep learning model, and the reclassification of the UGS type of POI data is realized. Then, combined with multi-source data, 18 types of UGS are extracted. Finally, combining multi-source data to extract urban road green spaces (GS), a fine-grained UGS functional map of Shanghai is created. The results show that the overall accuracy rate of the method is 93.6%, and the Kappa coefficient is 0.93, which proves that the method has good performance in large-scale spatial UGS classification.

ABSTRACTThe increasing availability of global observational data has sparked a demand for deep learning algorithms on spherical grids to enable intelligent analysis at a global scale. However, a spherical surface cannot be subdivided into completely identical grid cells through recursive division, and its nonuniformity and irregular deformations lead to uncertainties in the spherical convolutional neural network (SCNN). This paper proposes a multimetric evaluation method to assess the impact of the icosahedral diamond grid quality on the performance of the SCNN by introducing the random forest algorithm to establish nonlinear relationships between multiple grid quality metrics and the SCNN performance and using feature importance analysis to assign impact weights to each grid quality metric considering the SCNN performance. The results show an R2 score of 0.80 for the evaluation method, with four indicators having different weights: cell wall midpoint ratio (0.47), distance between grid points and neighbouring points (0.29), zone standardized compactness (0.13), and angle between a grid point and its two neighbours (0.11). The cell wall midpoint ratio indicator has the most significant impact on the SCNN performance among all grid indicators.

The United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address societal, economic and environmental sustainability issues. The efficiency of SDGs monitoring could be improved by essential variables (EVs), which can help to better deal with massive data, interdisciplinary knowledge and workloads. However, in practice, effectively combining EVs with SDGs monitoring remains challenging. In this paper, we proposed a refining method of essential SDGs variables (ESDGVs) to land degradation. Firstly, we selected northwest China as our experimental region and extracted a group of variables related to land degradation from SDG indicators based on the DPSIR framework. Next, we identify the essential ones using a combined qualitative and quantitative methods with the criteria of feasibility, spatialization, and relevance which considered the issues of data acquisition, monitoring scale, and closeness to the land degradation. Finally, we analysed the monitoring role of ESDGVs. Results show that, compared to conventional observations, ESDGVs facilitate the monitoring and evaluation of regional SDGs with reduced efforts. And both climate and human activities have a facilitating or inhibiting effect on land degradation processes. In the future, we hope to have more mature data sets and consider adding more SDG indicators for ESDGVs’ refinement.

The distribution and dynamic changes of regional or national population data with long time series are very important for regional planning, resource allocation, government decision-making, disaster assessment, ecological protection, and other sustainability research. However, the existing population datasets such as LandScan and WorldPop all provide data from 2000 with limited time series, while GHS-POP only utilizes land use data with limited accuracy. In view of the limited remote sensing images of long time series, it is necessary to combine existing multi-source remote sensing data for population spatialization research. In this research, we developed a nighttime light desaturation index (NTLDI). Through the cross-sensor calibration model based on an autoencoder convolutional neural network, the NTLDI was calibrated with the same period Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite Day/Night Band (VIIRS-DNB) data. Then, the geographically weighted regression method is used to determine the population density of China from 1990 to 2020 based on the long time series NTL. Furthermore, the change characteristics and the driving factors of China’s population spatial distribution are analyzed. The large-scale, long-term population spatialization results obtained in this study are of great significance in government planning and decision-making, disaster assessment, resource allocation, and other aspects.

Although atmospheric CO2 concentrations collected by satellites play a crucial role in understanding global greenhouse gases, the sparse geographic distribution greatly affects their widespread application. In this paper, a hybrid CNN and spatiotemporal Kriging (CNN-STK) model is proposed to generate a monthly spatiotemporal continuous XCO2 dataset over China at 0.25° grid-scale from 2015 to 2020, utilizing OCO-2 XCO2 and geographic covariates. The validations against observation samples, CAMS XCO2 and TCCON measurements indicate the CNN-STK model is effective, robust, and reliable with high accuracy (validation set metrics: R2 = 0.936, RMSE = 1.3 ppm, MAE = 0.946 ppm; compared with TCCON: R2 = 0.954, RMSE = 0.898 ppm and MAE = 0.741 ppm). The accuracy of CNN-STK XCO2 exhibits spatial inhomogeneity, with higher accuracy in northern China during spring, autumn, and winter and lower accuracy in northeast China during summer. XCO2 in low-value-clustering areas is notably influenced by biological activities. Moreover, relatively high uncertainties are observed in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Sichuan Basin. This study innovatively integrates deep learning with the geostatistical method, providing a stable and cost-effective approach for other countries and regions to obtain regional scales of atmospheric CO2 concentrations, thereby supporting policy formulation and actions to address climate change.

Assessing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 15.3.1, which refers to the proportion of degraded land to total land area, and analysing its status and drivers is essential for the development of policies to promote the early achievement of SDG target 15.3 of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN). In this study, Northeast China was selected as the study area, and the progress of indicator 15.3.1 was assessed based on the perspective of Net Primary Productivity (NPP) calculated by the CASA model. WorldPop population spatial distribution data were used as a proxy for human activities, combined with climate data to calculate the effects of changes in temperature, precipitation and population spatial distribution on vegetation NPP based on the partial correlation coefficient method and the Geodetector method. The results showed that 92.81% of the areas that passed the test of significance showed an increasing trend in vegetation NPP from 2000 to 2020. The vegetation NPP was affected by a combination of temperature, precipitation and population. The effects of temperature and precipitation on spatial differences in NPP for various vegetation types were significantly greater than those of population, but in high-density population zones, the effects of population on spatial differences in NPP were generally greater than those of temperature and precipitation. Precipitation was the main driver for spatial variation in NPP in deciduous broad-leaved forests, cultivated vegetation and thickets, while temperature was the main driver for spatial variation in NPP in evergreen coniferous forests. Generally, the warming and wetting trend in Northeast China contributed to the accumulation of NPP in cultivated vegetation, thickets, steppes and grasslands. The sensitivity of NPP to temperature and precipitation in deciduous broad-leaved and deciduous coniferous forests varied according to geographical location.

The Voronoi diagram on the Earth’s surface is a significant data model, characterized by natural proximity and dynamic stability, which has emerged as one of the most promising solutions for global spatial dynamic management and analysis. However, traditional algorithms for generating spherical raster Voronoi diagrams find it challenging to dynamically adjust the Voronoi diagram while maintaining precision and efficiency. The efficient and accurate construction of the spherical Voronoi diagram has become one of the bottleneck issues limiting its further large-scale application. To this end, this paper proposes a dynamic construction scheme for the spherical Voronoi diagram based on the QTM (Quaternary Triangular Mesh) system, with the aim of enabling efficient generation, local updates, and multi-scale visualization of the spherical Voronoi diagrams. In this paper, canonical ordering is introduced. Tailored for the properties of the spherical triangular grid, it constructs a unified and standardized sorting strategy for the dilation of the spherical grids. The construction and updating of the spherical Voronoi diagram are achieved through the ordered dilation of sites. Furthermore, the multi-scale visualization of the spherical Voronoi diagram is realized through the hierarchical structure of the QTM. The paper presents our algorithm intuitively through pseudocode, conducts comparative experiments on the feasibility and efficiency, and designs an experiment for the dynamic navigation and management of ocean-going vessels based on the global multi-resolution Voronoi diagram. The experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm effectively controls the error of the generation of the raster Voronoi diagram and has a significant efficiency advantage when processing dynamic environments.

Evaluating the ecological vulnerability of the northwestern region of Liaoning Province, a typical ecologically vulnerable area in China, and exploring its inherent patterns help formulate effective measures for ecological protection and restoration. Existing studies in this region have focused on the county, city, or provincial level, failing to capture the overall ecological vulnerability. Based on the “sensitivity-degradation” model framework, this study employed the Analytic Hierarchy Process, Principal Component Analysis, and geographical detector methods to evaluate the ecological vulnerability in the northwestern region of Liaoning Province from 2000 to 2022 and analyzed the possible driving factors. The results showed that, from 2000 to 2022, areas with moderate or higher vulnerability accounted for an average of 64.7% of the total area, while severely and extremely vulnerable areas accounted for 32.5%. These severely and extremely vulnerable areas are mainly distributed along both banks of the Liuhe River and in the northern part of Liaoning Province, where it adjoins the Horqin Sandy Land. From 2000 to 2022, the overall ecological vulnerability in the northwestern region of Liaoning Province showed a decreasing trend, with the proportion of severe vulnerability significantly decreasing from 35.6% to 8.6%. Vegetation and land use were the primary factors leading to long-term changes in ecological vulnerability. This research can also provide an example for the similar issues in other study areas.

Fine-scale population spatial distribution plays an important role in urban microcosmic research, influencing infrastructure placement, emergency evacuation management, business decisions, and urban planning. In the past, nighttime light (NTL) data were generally used to map the spatial distribution of the population at a large scale because of their low spatial resolution. The new generation of Luojia1-01 NTL data can be used for fine-scale social and economic analysis with its high spatial resolution and quantitative range. However, due to the geometry and background noise of the data themselves, the accuracy of the original NTL data is still low. Points-of-interest (POI) also can be used to map the population spatialization, but the indicative relationship between the POI and population is not clear, especially in rural and urban areas with different landscape structures. To solve the above-mentioned problems, this study proposes an improved nighttime light (INTL) index to better use the Luojia1-01 NTL data. Meanwhile, a zonal classification model based on INTL and impervious surface area is proposed to distinguish urban and rural areas. Compared with previous research and existing datasets, our result had the highest accuracy (R² = 0.86). This study explains that the INTL index is applicable to population spatialization research with the emergence of high-resolution and multispectral NTL satellite data. Moreover, the zonal classification model in this research can significantly improve the accuracy of population spatialization in rural areas. This study provides a possible way to use NTL and POI data in other social and economic spatialization research.

Rapid population growth has had a significant impact on society, economy and environment, which will challenge the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Spatially accurate and detailed population distribution data are essential for measuring the impact of population growth and tracking progress on the SDGs. However, most population data are evenly distributed within administrative units, which seriously lacks spatial details. There are scale differences between the population statistical data and geospatial data, which makes data analysis and needed research difficult. The disaggregation method is an effective way to obtain the spatial distribution of population with greater granularity. It can also transform the statistical population data from irregular administrative units into regular grids to characterize the spatial distribution of the population, and the original population count is preserved. This paper summarizes the research advances of population disaggregation in terms of methodology, ancillary data, and products and discusses the role of spatial disaggregation of population statistical data in monitoring and evaluating SDG indicators. Furthermore, future work is proposed from two perspectives: challenges with spatial disaggregation and disaggregated population as an Essential SDG Variable (ESDGV).

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data have significant potential for soil moisture monitoring because of their high spatial resolution and independence from cloud coverage. However, it is challenging to retrieve soil moisture from SAR data over vegetated areas, as vegetation significantly affects backscattered radar signals. Auxiliary vegetation information obtained from optical images, such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the leaf area index (LAI), is commonly used to correct vegetation effects. However, it is generally difficult to obtain SAR and optical data in the same area simultaneously, because of the discrepancies in satellite coverage and the effects of cloud coverage. This study focuses on whether vegetation descriptors obtained directly from radar data at L-band can adequately parameterize the semi-empirical backscattering water cloud model (WCM) to support soil moisture retrieval. Four vegetation descriptors (three based on radar images and one based on optical images), were chosen to assess the parameterization and calibration of the WCM and the retrieval accuracy of soil moisture. The results showed that the vegetation descriptor of backscattering at VH polarization outperformed the other three vegetation descriptors (NDVI-derived vegetation water content, radar vegetation index, and the ratio of cross-polarization to VV polarization) in the investigation of four crop types (canola, corn, bean, and wheat) based on the Soil Moisture Active Passive Validation Experiment in 2012 (SMAPVEX12) in Canada. For the vegetation descriptor of VH, the overall accuracy of retrieved soil moisture was promising by separating into two growth stages, with unbiased root mean squared errors of 0.056, 0.053, 0.098, and 0.079 cm3/cm3 for canola, corn, bean, and wheat, respectively. The results also confirmed that variations in vegetation growth affect the accuracy of soil moisture retrieval. In addition, the retrieval performance was undermined when the vegetation changed dramatically, leading to variations or uncertainty in the vegetation structure. This study provides new insights into soil moisture retrieval methods with active L-band microwave observations.

In the present study, the total concentrations of three cyclic methylsiloxanes (ΣCMSs), including octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6), in surface water and sediment samples of five main rivers draining into the Bohai Sea were in the range of 1.62–1.39 × 103 ng/L and 1.92–1.69 × 103 ng/g dw, respectively. Riverine input had great influence on the coastal distribution of siloxanes in the Bohai Sea. The concentrations of ΣCMSs in coastal sediments farthest away (40–50 Km) from the estuaries were only 4–33% of those close to the estuaries. But surprisingly, compared with those in coastal sediments (1.03–1.44 × 103 ng/g dw), the concentrations of CMSs (1.56–2.67 × 103 ng/g dw) in some deep-sea sediments were higher, and certain positive correlation existed between sediment ΣCMSs in this area with the total petroleum hydrocarbons concentration (R2 = 0.92, p

DGGS (Discrete Global Grid System) has many subdivision models and coding methods. Due to the lack of underlying consistency of different DGGS codes, most of them are converted through longitude–latitude, which greatly reduces the interoperability efficiency of different DGGS data and has become one of the bottlenecks in efficient integration of multi-source DGGS data. Therefore, a direct mapping method from one grid code to another (Grid to Grid, GtoG) for multi-type DGGSs is proposed based on three classical DGGSs (triangular, diamond and hexagonal grids) and two commonly used filling curves (Hilbert curve and Z-curve). The mutual conversion rules of different grids expressing spatial point, line and surface data are constructed. Then, the above method is extended to the spherical icosahedral grid framework, and three different region coding mapping rule tables of the basic inside cells, boundary cells and vertex cells are designed. Finally, the experimental results show that, compared with the longitude–latitude conversion method, the average conversion efficiency of spatial point, line and surface data is increased by 2–4 orders of magnitude. This new method greatly improves the interoperability efficiency and provides a feasible solution for the efficient integration of multi-source DGGS data.

Spectral mixing models for minerals can be complex, and choosing the right unmixing model is indispensable to ensure the accuracy of spectral unmixing. Continuum removal (CR) and natural log operation have the potential to eliminate nonlinear effects in spectral mixing, and have already been used in nonlinear spectral unmixing applications. In this study, the newly proposed log and CR (LCR) model and four other spectral unmixing models for mineral analysis (the linear model, CR model, natural log model, and simplified Hapke model) were summarized and applied to both laboratory mineral powder spectra and hyperspectral data of Cuprite, Nevada, USA. This paper summarizes the concept of mixing reflectance reconstruction (MRR), along with a comprehensive method to determine accuracy based on MRR results, which can be performed in different dimensions, such as spatial dimension and spectral dimension. The LCR model performed the best in both laboratory experiments and image data analysis, indicating its strong potential for practical application. The level of atmospheric correction’s influence on unmixing accuracy varied for different spectral unmixing models, among which LCR model also had the best performance.

The improvement of overall uniformity and smoothness of spherical icosahedral grids, the basic framework of atmospheric models, is a key to reducing simulation errors. However, most of the existing grid optimization methods have optimized grid from different aspects and not improved overall uniformity and smoothness of grid at the same time, directly affecting the accuracy and stability of numerical simulation. Although a well-defined grid with more than 12 points cannot be constructed on a sphere, the area uniformity and the interval uniformity of the spherical grid can be traded off to enhance extremely the overall grid uniformity and smoothness. To solve this problem, an overall uniformity and smoothness optimization method of the spherical icosahedral grid is proposed based on the optimal transformation theory. The spherical cell decomposition method has been introduced to iteratively update the grid to minimize the spherical transportation cost, achieving an overall optimization of the spherical icosahedral grid. Experiments on the four optimized grids (the spring dynamics optimized grid, the Heikes and Randall optimized grid, the spherical centroidal Voronoi tessellations optimized grid and XU optimized grid) demonstrate that the grid area uniformity of our method has been raised by 22.60% of SPRG grid, −1.30% of HR grid, 38.30% of SCVT grid and 38.20% of XU grid, and the grid interval uniformity has been improved by 2.50% of SPRG grid, 2.80% of HR grid, 11.10% of SCVT grid and 11.00% of XU grid. Although the grid uniformity of the proposed method is similar with the HR grid, the smoothness of grid deformation has been enhanced by 79.32% of grid area and 24.07% of grid length. To some extent, the proposed method may be viewed as a novel optimization approach of the spherical icosahedral grid which can improve grid overall uniformity and smoothness of grid deformation.

Grottoes, with caves and statues, are an important part of immovable heritage. Statues in a particular grotto setting are often similar in geometric form and artistic style, and identifying the similarity between these statues can help provide important references for value recognition, condition assessment, repair, and the virtual restoration of statues. Traditionally, such reference information mainly depended on expert empirical judgment, which is highly subjective, lacks quantitative analysis, and cannot provide effective scientific support for the virtual restoration of grotto statues. This paper presents a similarity index based approach for identifying similarities between grotto statues by studying 11 small Buddhist statues carved on the 18th cave in the Yungang Grottoes, located in Datong, China. The similarity index is determined according to the hash values calculated based on the pHash method using the orthophoto images of Buddhist statues to identify similar statues. Similar feature points between the identified statues are then matched using the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) operator to support the repair and reconstruction of damaged statues. The experimental results show that the variation of similarity index values confirms the visual inspection of the statues’ appearance in the orthophotos. The additional analysis of three-dimensional (3D) point clouds also confirms that the similarity index based approach is accurate in the initial screening of similar grotto statues.

Although a Discrete Global Grid (DGG) is uniform in its initial subdivision, its geometric deformation increases with the level of subdivisions. The Goodchild Criteria are often used to evaluate the quality of DGGs. However, some indicators in these criteria are mutually incompatible and overlap. If the criteria are used directly, the evaluation of the DGGs is inaccurate or unreliable. In this paper, we calculated and analyzed the correlation between the evaluation indicators of the DGG and reconstructed a quality evaluation system of DGGs with independent indicators. Firstly, we classified the Goodchild Criteria into quantitative and qualitative indicators. Then, we calculated the correlation among the quantitative indicators and extracted the independent evaluation factors and related weights of the observed values by factor analysis. After eliminating or merging the incompatible and overlapping quantitative indicators and performing a logical reasoning of the qualitative indicators, we reconstructed a comprehensive evaluation system with independent indicators. Finally, taking the Quaternary Triangular Mesh (QTM) model as an example, we verified the independence of the indicators and the feasibility of the evaluation system. The new indicator system ensures the reliability of the evaluation of DGGs in many fields.

The UN’s 2030 Agenda defined 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In order to ensure the implementation of this global agenda, the UN proposed a systematic follow-up and review through indicator-based tracking and reporting of the progress with statistical and geospatial information toward SDGs at national, regional, and global levels. This has posed many technical and institutional challenges. Although international communities have devoted great attention to this hot topic, most of their work has focused on the conceptual design and preliminary testing. There are very few good practices for a comprehensive measurement and assessment of progress toward SDGs with the integration of statistical and geospatial information at national or local levels. This paper presents the methodology and results of a pioneer project which measured the progress toward SDGs at a local level in China (i.e., Deqing County) by integrating statistical and geospatial information. In this study, a number of technical/institutional issues have been tackled, such as the adoption of appropriate indicators at a local level, availability and acquisition of reliable data sets, and spatiotemporal analysis with a geographical perspective, interaction between SDGs and cross-sector coordination. The major conclusions are (a) the comprehensive progress toward SDGs in Deqing can be most appropriately measured and assessed by integrating geospatial and statistical information; (b) Deqing has made significant economic and social advances while maintaining a good ecological environment over the past few years. The results were released at the first United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress as a good practice and a live example to stimulate discussions.

Quantitative assessments and dynamic monitoring of indicators based on fine-scale population data are necessary to support the implementation of the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda and to comprehensively achieve its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, most population data are collected by administrative units, and it is difficult to reflect true distribution and uniformity in space. To solve this problem, based on fine building information, a geospatial disaggregation method of population data for supporting SDG assessments is presented in this paper. First, Deqing County in China, which was divided into residential areas and nonresidential areas according to the idea of dasymetric mapping, was selected as the study area. Then, the town administrative areas were taken as control units, building area and number of floors were used as weighting factors to establish the disaggregation model, and population data with a resolution of 30 m in Deqing County in 2016 were obtained. After analyzing the statistical population of 160 villages and the disaggregation results, we found that the global average accuracy was 87.08%. Finally, by using the disaggregation population data, indicators 3.8.1, 4.a.1, and 9.1.1 were selected to conduct an accessibility analysis and a buffer analysis in a quantitative assessment of the SDGs. The results showed that the SDG measurement and assessment results based on the disaggregated population data were more accurate and effective than the results obtained using the traditional method.

Stains, as one of most common degradations of paper cultural relics, not only affect paintings’ appearance, but sometimes even cover the text, patterns, and colors contained in the relics. Virtual restorations based on common red−green−blue images (RGB) which remove the degradations and then fill the lacuna regions with the image’s known parts with the inpainting technology could produce a visually plausible result. However, due to the lack of information inside the degradations, they always yield inconsistent structures when stains cover several color materials. To effectively remove the stains and restore the covered original contents of Chinese paintings, a novel method based on Poisson editing is proposed by exploiting the information inside the degradations of selected three feature bands as the auxiliary information to guide the restoration since the selected feature bands captured fewer stains and could expose the covered information. To make the Poisson editing suitable for stain removal, the feature bands were also exploited to search for the optimal patch for the pixels in the stain region, and the searched patch was used to construct the color constraint on the original Poisson editing to ensure the restoration of the original color of paintings. Specifically, this method mainly consists of two steps: feature band selection from hyperspectral data by establishing rules and reconstruction of stain contaminated regions of RGB image with color constrained Poisson editing. Four Chinese paintings (‘Fishing’, ‘Crane and Banana’, ‘the Hui Nationality Painting’, and ‘Lotus Pond and Wild Goose’) with different color materials were used to test the performance of the proposed method. Visual results show that this method can effectively remove or dilute the stains while restoring a painting’s original colors. By comparing values of restored pixels with nonstained pixels (reference of their same color materials), images processed by the proposed method had the lowest average root mean square error (RMSE), normalized absolute error (NAE), and average differences (AD), which indicates that it is an effective method to restore the stains of Chinese paintings.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on individual human behaviour, making it a prominent research topic in recent years. However, most studies have focused on mobility, with limited attention given to changes in residents’ activities patterns. Furthermore, changes in these patterns at a finer spatiotemporal scale remain understudied. To fill this gap, we analysed and compared changes in residents’ activities across different streets and time slots from three perspectives – human activity intensity (HAI), population distribution, and daily activity patterns – using high-spatiotemporal-resolution Baidu heat map data. First, we tracked daily variations in HAI for each street across different time slots from the lockdown period to the post-pandemic era. On this basis, we calculated the changes in HAI and population distribution and inferred daily activity patterns. Our results revealed that HAI trends were similar across all streets, but relative changes varied across streets and different time slots. Moreover, the pattern of population distribution changed, with a shift from the central area to the surrounding regions. Additionally, daily activities transitioned from leisure and work activities to residential activities, with more pronounced changes in the forenoon and afternoon slots. These findings provide scientific evidence for guiding targeted urban management.

MODIS (MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) aerosol products are the most widely used satellite retrieved aerosol optic depth (AOD) products, which compensate for the spatial lack of ground-based sun photometer observations. The newly released Collection 6 (C6) aerosol products have some improvements compared to the Collection 5.1 (C5.1) products with optimized algorithms and newly revised upstream products. Additionally, a three-kilometer resolution AOD product was added in the C6 product. In this study, the accuracies and regional applicability of long-term (2001–2015) different MODIS C5.1 and C6 aerosol products in China were evaluated against the 16 AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) observations with observations over more than three years. The overall analysis indicates that the C6 DT (Dark Target) 10 km products slightly improved the retrieval accuracies, with about 3% more data falling within the Expected Error (EE) envelope. However, for Deep Blue (DB) products, the C6 algorithm significantly improved the accuracy over all of China, and increased the successful retrieval number by extending retrieval coverages. Regional analysis demonstrated that the C6 DT 10 km product did not perform well in East China, with only 33.5% of retrievals falling within the EE envelope. For the DB product, the C6 algorithm significantly increased the number successfully retrieved, and was more accurate in all four regions in China. The validation of the DT 3 km product suggests large differences existed between the Terra and Aqua results. The accuracy of the Aqua DT 3 km product is obviously higher than that of the Terra DT 3 km product. The results of the study suggest that proper AOD products need to be considered when evaluating aerosol loading situations in different regions in China.

A global multi-resolution image data model and a feasible solution for its seamless management and archiving remain a challenging vision. The traditional methods of the raster pixel data structure based on the idea of map projections are effective to support local or small-scale areas. However, if this structure is applied to large-scale or whole global image archiving, some significant drawbacks are unavoidable, such as data discontinuity (or overlapping), geometric distortions, etc. To overcome these deficiencies, in this paper the Quaternary Triangular Mesh (QTM) (Dutton, 1989), as a continuous, hierarchal quadtree data structure with uniform grids on a sphere, is proposed for global-scale seamless image archiving. First, the mapping relation between raster image pixels and QTM pixels is approached based on the QTM subdivision and Quaternary coding scheme (Bartholdi & Goldsman, 2001), and a corresponding algorithm of QTM pixel grey level calculation is also developed. Then, the storage structure of global-scale image archiving based on QTM pixels is presented in detail. In the end, an experiment is described using the 1km resolution NOAA data for China, comparing the differences in pixel grey levels between original image pixels and QTM pixels. The result indicates that the QTM pixel data structure can keep global-scale images seamless, and the accuracy of transformation from the imaging pixel to the QTM pixel is a loss of less than 2 grey levels for 94.5% of all pixels, the loss from 2 to 4 is 1.9%, the loss from 4 to 10 is 2%, and the rest is 1.6%. The results are good and acceptable.
