Identifying Galactic PeVatrons (PeV particle accelerators) from ultrahigh-energy (UHE, >100 TeV) γ -ray sources plays a crucial role in revealing the origin of Galactic cosmic rays. The UHE source 1LHAASO J1857+0203u is suggested to be associated with HESS J1858+020, which may be attributed to the possible PeVatron candidate supernova remnant (SNR) G35.6−0.4 or H ii region G35.6−0.5. We perform detailed analysis on the very-high-energy and UHE γ -ray emissions toward this region with data from the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). 1LHAASO J1857+0203u is detected with a significance of 11.6 σ above 100 TeV, indicating the presence of a PeVatron. It has an extent of ∼0 $\mathop{.}\limits^{\unicode{x000B0}}$ 18 with a power-law (PL) spectral index of ∼2.5 at 1–25 TeV and pointlike emission with a PL spectral index of ∼3.2 above 25 TeV. Using archival CO and H i data, we identify some molecular and atomic clouds that may be associated with the TeV γ -ray emissions. Our modeling indicates that the TeV γ -ray emissions are unlikely to arise from clouds illuminated by the protons that escaped from SNR G35.6−0.4. In the scenario in which H ii region G35.6−0.5 could accelerate particles to the UHE band, the observed GeV–TeV γ -ray emission could be well explained by a hadronic model with a PL spectral index of ∼2.0 and cutoff energy of ∼450 TeV. However, an origin in an evolved pulsar wind nebula cannot be ruled out.

To investigate the perforating characteristics of Zr-based bulk metallic glass fragments against thin steel target, ballistic experiments were carried out to measure ballistic the limit velocities of fragments perforating against different thicknesses of targets. The fragments were driven by a 57 mm one-stage light gas gun to impact the thin steel target. The numerical model of Zr-based bulk metallic glass fragments perforating against thin steel target was established using Autodyn2D commercial software, and the perforating process and perforating mechanism were analyzed by numerical simulation. The semi-empirical model to predict the ballistic limit velocity was fitted. An energy model for calculating the residual velocity of a fragment was derived based on the conservation of energy. The theoretical results of the semi-empirical model and the energy model are in good agreement with experiment results and simulation results. And the energy model has good applicability without fitting the parameters for different target thicknesses.

Detection of low viral load samples has long been a challenge for African swine fever (ASF) prevention and control. This study aimed to compare the detection efficacy of droplet digital PCR(ddPCR) and quantitative PCR(qPCR) for African swine fever virus (ASFV) at different viral loads, with a focus on assessing the accuracy of ddPCR in detecting low viral load samples. The results revealed that ddPCR had a detection limit of 1.97 (95% CI 1.48 – 4.12) copies/reaction and was 18.99 times more sensitive than qPCR (detection limit: 37.42, 95% CI 29.56 – 69.87 copies/reaction). In the quantification of high, medium, and low viral load samples, ddPCR showed superior stability with lower intra- (2.06% – 7.58%) and inter-assay (3.83% – 7.50%) coefficients of variation than those of qPCR (intra-assay: 8.08%–29.86%; inter-assay: 9.27%–34.58%). Bland-Altman analysis indicated acceptable consistency between ddPCR and qPCR for high and medium viral load samples; however, discrepancies were observed for low viral load samples, where two samples (2/24, 8.33%) exhibited deviations beyond the acceptable range (−46.18 copies/reaction). Moreover, ddPCR demonstrated better performance in detecting ASFV in clinical samples from asymptomatic pigs and environmental samples, with qPCR showing false negative rates of 7.69% (2/26) and 27.27% (12/44), respectively. McNemar analysis revealed significant differences between the two methods (P = 0.000) for samples with a viral load

The first source catalog of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) reported the detection of a very high energy gamma-ray source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915. This Letter presents a further detailed study of the spectral and temporal behavior of this pointlike source. The best-fit position of the TeV source (R.A. = 185.°05 ± 0.°04, decl. = 29.°25 ± 0.°03) is compatible with NGC 4278 within ∼0.°03. Variation analysis shows an indication of variability on a timescale of a few months in the TeV band, which is consistent with low-frequency observations. Based on these observations, we report the detection of TeV γ -ray emissions from this low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. The observation by LHAASO's Water Cherenkov Detector Array during the active period has a significance level of 8.8 σ with a best-fit photon spectral index Γ = 2.56 ± 0.14 and a flux f _1–10 TeV = (7.0 ± 1.1 _sta ± 0.35 _syst ) × 10 ^−13 photons cm ^−2 s ^−1 , or approximately 5% of the Crab Nebula. The discovery of VHE gamma-ray emission from NGC 4278 indicates that compact, weak radio jets can efficiently accelerate particles and emit TeV photons.

The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitter established by observations with ground-based gamma-ray detectors. Here we report the long-term monitoring of M87 from 2021 to 2024 with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). M87 has been detected by LHAASO with a statistical significance ∼ 9 σ . The observed energy spectrum extends to 20 TeV, with a possible hardening at ∼20 TeV and then a clear softening at higher energies. Assuming that the intrinsic spectrum is described by a single power law up to 20 TeV, a tight upper bound on the extragalactic background light intensity is obtained. A strong VHE flare lasting 8 days, with a rise time of ${\tau }_{r}^{\mathrm{rise}}=1.05\pm 0.49$ days and decay time of ${\tau }_{d}^{\mathrm{decay}}=2.17\pm 0.58$ days, was found in early 2022. A possible GeV flare is seen also in Fermi Large Area Telescope data during the VHE flare period. The variability time as short as 1 day seen in the LHAASO data suggests a compact emission region with a size of ∼3 × 10 ^15 δ cm ( δ being the Doppler factor of the emitting region), corresponding to a few Schwarzschild radii of the central supermassive black hole in M87. The continuous monitoring of the source reveals a duty cycle of ∼1% for VHE flares with a flux above 10 ^−11 erg cm ^−2 s ^−1 .

We present the first catalog of very-high-energy and ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory. The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array from 2021 March to 2022 September and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array from 2020 January to 2022 September. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering decl. from −20° to 80°. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than 2° and a significance of detection at >5 σ . Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ( E > 100 TeV) emission at >4 σ significance level. We provide the position, extension, and spectral characteristics of all the sources in this catalog.

The interplay between superconductivity and magnetism is an important subject in condensed matter physics. EuFe _2 As _2 -based iron pnictides could offer an interesting plateau to study their relationship that has attracted considerable attention. So far, two magnetic phase transitions were observed in EuFe _2 As _2 -based crystal, which were deemed to originate from the itinerant Fe moments (~190 K) and the localized Eu ^2+ moments (~19 K), respectively. Here, we systematically studied the heat capacity for the EuFe _2 (As $ _{1-x}$ P _x ) _2 crystals with x = 0.21 (optimally doped) and x = 0.29 (overdoped). We have found two new magnetic orders in the superconducting state (ranging from 0.4 to 1.2 K) in the optimally doped crystal. As more P was introduced into the As site, one of the magnetic orders becomes absent in the overdoped crystal. Additionally, we observed strong field and orientation dependence in heat capacity. The present findings in EuFe _2 (As $ _{1-x}$ P _x ) _2 have detected the new low-temperature magnetic orders, which may originate from the localized Eu ^2+ spins order or the spin reorientation.

Abstract The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. Finally, the test facilities, the test methods and results of SiPMs in the cameras are reported here.

Heat accumulation is a critical problem in continuous multi-layer laser aided additive manufacturing (LAAM) process, resulting in inhomogeneous mechanical properties and non-uniformity in the deposited height which can deteriorate the deposition process. This work presents a new integrated finite element (FE) simulation and machine learning approach to select a multi-layer laser infill toolpath planning strategy for fabricating quadrilateral parts to minimise localised heat accumulation during the deposition process. After one layer deposition simulation, the approach employs a Temperature-Pattern Recurrent Neural Networks (TP-RNN) model to predict the temperature field after the next layer deposition for each of the candidate infill toolpaths, and a process parameters inspired thermal field evaluation method to select the best candidate toolpath. The approach would significantly improve the computational efficiency of the laser infill toolpath planning, which was validated by improving the flatness of the 20-layer cube deposition samples with two dimensions (20 mm × 20 mm and 30 mm × 30 mm).

Uncertain or inaccurate parameters in sea ice models influence seasonal predictions and climate change projections in terms of both mean and trend. We explore the feasibility and benefits of applying an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) to estimate parameters in the Los Alamos sea ice model (CICE). Parameter estimation (PE) is applied to the highly influential dry snow grain radius and combined with state estimation in a series of perfect model observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs). Allowing the parameter to vary in space improves performance along the sea ice edge but degrades in the central Arctic compared to requiring the parameter to be uniform everywhere, suggesting that spatially varying parameters will likely improve PE performance at local scales and should be considered with caution. We compare experiments with both PE and state estimation to experiments with only the latter and have found that the benefits of PE mostly occur after the data assimilation period, when no observations are available to assimilate (i.e., the forecast period), which suggests PE's relevance for improving seasonal predictions of Arctic sea ice.

Aluminum (Al) alloys have a multitude of applications, notably in the automotive, aerospace and coating industries, yet they exhibit significantly lower mechanical strength than conventional steels. Nanotwins drastically improve mechanical strength while retaining ductility. However, the high SFE of Al largely prevents twinning. Here, we synthesize Al-Zr alloy films containing an abundance of incoherent twin boundaries and 9R phases. These alloys exhibit an extended solid solubility of Zr, retaining a columnar nanotwinned structure across all compositions. These films reach a hardness up to 4.2 GPa with 10 at% Zr and demonstrate the capacity for producing strong Al alloys with nanotwins.

Contact imaging based on MeV energy laser accelerated protons is studied in this paper. First, we show that both external structures and the internal organs of ants can be distinguished with micrometer spatial resolution by proton radiography. Then, we systematically study several specific influence factors and their coupled effects on the spatial resolution of proton radiography, i.e., the accumulated shot number, the proton irradiation dose, the different types of detectors, and the incident proton energy, using two specially designed resolution calibration targets. Under our experimental conditions with MeV protons, the best resolution obtained with the radiochromic film is 20 μm, and that with the solid-state nuclear-track detector (CR39) is 10 μm. In the end, we propose an image deblurring algorithm that uses deconvolution to eliminate the blurring caused by the nonzero spatial extent of the source and multiple Coulomb scattering. This work studies the comprehensive factors of laser accelerated proton radiography with resolution calibration targets and presents incremental additions to previous work on proton radiography.

In the Sikhote-Alin and Changbai Mountains of the Amur River region, earthworms of genus Drawida inhabit the northern boundary of their natural habitat. They are represented by the epigeic and anecic life-forms, three steady colour morphs and eight valid species, yet the genetic lineages of 11 have yet to be described. Based on mt-COI gene fragment sequence data, epigeic and anecic earthworms are shown to differ from one another at the interspecific level. Polymorphism and genetic intraspecific diversity are an obligatory sign for a species in the refuge even at the boundary of its distribution where this species occupies new ecological niches. The original habitats of the ancient Drawida black morph were within the Paleo-Amur River basin in the Late Neogene. Today, the meadow-swampy drawidas protrude far north along the Amur River floodplain up to the border of the last freezing in this region in comparison to the forest earthworms. However, at similar northern latitudes such as the Kuril Islands and the Sakhalin, Drawida are absent, because the soil on these islands during the last Ice Age was permafrost. The black epigeic drawidas only live in the floodplain meadows. The grey and brown morphs of the anecic species live in same forest biotopes, where they inhabit different soil horizons.

Engineering practice shows that the deformation of the slide-resistant pile may be transferred to the adjacent bridge foundation on an inclined slope, which can compromise the safety of the entire bridge. However, this phenomenon has rarely been considered in the past. To reveal the deformation transfer mechanism between the slide-resistant pile and the adjacent structures, a full-scale field test was performed on a high and steep slope located in a section of a certain railway. A numerical analysis model was constructed to simulate the field test and validate its parameters. Moreover, parametric analysis was also conducted to examine the influence of the pile length, pile diameter, and arrangement of the pile foundation. The results show that the bridge pile foundation is simultaneously affected by the “load transfer effect” caused by the slide-resistant pile and “traction effect” of the sliding slope. With the distance between the pile foundation and the slide-resistant pile increasing, the dominant factor affecting the deformation mode of the pile body is switched from the “load transfer effect” to the “traction effect.” Furthermore, a critical embedment depth exists for the bridge pile foundation built on a high and steep slope, which varies at different locations along the inclined stratum. In addition, using a pile arrangement with a larger pile diameter and lower number of piles is more beneficial for controlling the horizontal displacement of the bridge foundation. The results of the research provide a reference for the safety control of the engineering on the high and steep slope.

Aluminum (Al) alloys have been widely used in the transportation industry. However, most high-strength Al alloys to date have limited mechanical strength, on the order of a few hundred MPa, which is much lower than the flow stress of high-strength steels. In this study, we show the fabrication of nanocrystalline Al alloys with high-density growth twins enabled by a few atomic percent of Co solute. In situ uniaxial compression tests show that the flow stress of Al–Co solid solution alloys exceeds 1.5 GPa, while good work hardening capability is maintained. This study provides a new perspective on the design of high-strength Al alloys for various applications.

Salsola laricifolia, a typical C3-C4 intermediate desert plant, is an important for understanding gene evolution and mechanisms for drought resistance. The reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is a preferred choice for gene expression studies, but it requires stable reference genes for normalization. Therefore, we tested the expression stability of five candidate reference genes in S. laricifolia: EF1α (elongation factor 1-α), ACT (actin), GAPDH (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase), TUB (tubulin), and 18S (18S ribosomal RNA). The expressions were tested in different tissues and under five stresses caused by abscisic acid (ABA), NaCl, NaHCO3, darkness, and osmotic stress (polyethylene glycol 6000, PEG). Four commonly used software programs (geNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper, and RefFinder) were used. The results show the following most stable reference genes: GAPDH for ABA and dark treatments; EF1a for NaCl, PEG; and all samples; TUB for NaHCO3; and 18S for the controls. The ACT was not ranked first in any group, and was the least stable reference gene under the dark, NaHCO3, and PEG. Moreover, pairwise analysis by the geNorm algorithm shows that two best reference genes were 18S and EF1a for the controls, GAPDH, and 18S for the ABA and dark treatments, EF1a and TUB for the NaCl treatment, TUB and 18S for the NaHCO3 treatment, EF1a and GAPDH for the PEG treatment, and EF1a and 18S for all samples. The reference genes for RT-qPCR in S. laricifolia identified in our study will facilitate future work on targeted gene expression.

Mn-Zn ferrites doped with different Sm2O3, Gd2O3, Ce2O3 or Y2O3 were prepared by traditional ceramic technology using industrial pre-sintered powders. A small amount of Sm2O3, Gd2O3, Ce2O3 or Y2O3 can significantly improve the microstructure and magnetic properties. The single spinel phase structure can be maintained with the doping amount up to 0.07 wt.%. A refined grain structure and uniform grain size distribution can be obtained by doping. For all rare earth oxides, a small amount of doping can significantly increase the permeability and reduce the coercivity and magnetic core loss. The optimized doping amount for Sm2O3 or Gd2O3 is 0.01 wt.%, while for Ce2O3 or Y2O3 is 0.03 wt.%. A further increase of the doping content will lead to reduced soft magnetic properties. The ferrite sample with 0.01 wt.% Sm2O3 exhibits the good magnetic properties with permeability, loss, and coercivity of 2586, 316 W/kg, and 24A/m, respectively, at 200 mT and 100 kHz. The present results indicate that rare earth doping can be suggested to be one of the effective ways to improve the performance of soft ferrites.
