Abstract

Water-soluble components have significant contribution to the oxidative potential (OP) of atmospheric fine particles, while our understanding of their relationship is still limited. In this study, the water-soluble OP levels in wintertime PM2.5 in the south and north of Beijing, representing the difference in sources, were measured with dithiothreitol (DTT) assay. The volume normalized DTT (DTTv) in the north (3.5 ± 1.2 nmol min-1 m-3) was comparable to that in the south (3.9 ± 0.9 nmol min-1 m-3), while the mass normalized DTT (DTTm) in the north (65.3 ± 27.6 pmol min-1 μg-3) was almost twice that in the south (36.1 ± 14.5 pmol min-1 μg-3). In both the south and north of Beijing, DTTv was better correlated with soluble elements instead of total elements. In the north, soluble elements (mainly Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, As, Cd and Pb) and water-soluble organic compounds, especially light-absorbing compounds (also known as brown carbon), had positive correlations with DTTv. However, in the south, the DTTv was mainly related to soluble As, Fe and Pb. The sources of DTTv were further resolved using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. Traffic-related emissions (39.1 %) and biomass burning (25.2 %) were the main sources of DTTv in the south, and traffic-related emissions (> 50 %) contributed the most of DTTv in the north. Our results indicate that vehicle emission was the important contributor to OP in Beijing ambient PM2.5 and suggest that more study is needed to understand the intrinsic relationship between OP and light absorbing organic compounds. 31. The Development of a Novel Headspace O 2 Concentration Measurement Sensor for Vials.

Abstract

In the process of manufacture and transportation, vials are prone to breakage and cracks. Oxygen (O2) in the air entering vials can lead to the deterioration of medicine and a reduction in pesticide effects, threatening the life of patients. Therefore, accurate measurement of the headspace O2 concentration for vials is crucial to ensure pharmaceutical quality. In this invited paper, a novel headspace oxygen concentration measurement (HOCM) sensor for vials was developed based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). First, a long–optical–path multi–pass cell was designed by optimizing the original system. Moreover, vials with different O2 concentrations (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%) were measured with this optimized system in order to study the relationship between the leakage coefficient and O2 concentration; the root mean square error of the fitting was 0.13. Moreover, the measurement accuracy indicates that the novel HOCM sensor achieved an average percentage error of 1.9%. Sealed vials with different leakage holes (4, 6, 8, and 10 mm) were prepared to investigate the variation in the headspace O2 concentration with time. The results show that the novel HOCM sensor is non-invasive and has a fast response and high accuracy, with prospects in applications for online quality supervision and management of production lines. Abstract

In order to expand the possibility of better applicability, spheroid particles are adopted to replace the traditional spherical particle assumption in the modeling of multi-wavelength light extinction method. The extinction coefficient and extinction spectrum are then calculated at different axial ratios based on the generalized Mie theory. Combining extinction spectrum with regularized inversion algorithm, the effect of particle shape on particle size characterization in multi-wavelength extinction method is discussed in detail. The results show that in the visible light range, for submicron particles with a refractive index of 1.33, inversed particle sizes are compared with the sphere, which yields the equivalent volume spheroid in axial ratio of 1-3 particle size inversion error within 10%, while, when the ratio is above 3, the relative deviation may reach about 50%. It can be seen that for particles of equal volume, the spheroidal shape exerts a great influence on the particle size measurement of the multi-wavelength extinction method, and the assumption of spheroidal particle is more suitable for the cases of axial ratio within 3.
