3. Text Difficulty in Extensive Reading: Reading Comprehension and Reading Motivation

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of the text difficulty of extensive reading materials on the reading comprehension and reading motivation of English as a foreign language (EFL) vocational high school students in Taiwan. Two experimental groups were assigned, on an individual basis, to read graded readers at either one level below ('i-1') or one level beyond ('i+1') their current level, while a control group followed their regular curriculum. The results showed that after treatment, the 'i-1' group improved their overall comprehension and the subset of literal comprehension. They also outperformed the 'i+1' group on the same measures. For reading motivation, the 'i+1' group's overall motivation was promoted. Both groups enhanced their reading engagement, while only the 'i-1' group inhibited reading avoidance. Moreover, the 'i+1' group outperformed the 'i-1' group in the perception of self-efficacy. Overall, the 'i-1' level yielded better effects on reading comprehension; the 'i+1' level, on reading motivation.

9. A Fast CA 19-9 Screening for Pancreatic Cancer Clinical Trials Utilizing AlGaN/GaN High Electron Mobility Transistors

Abstract

In the clinical trials, AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) biosensors were successfully investigated for the rapid detection of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) tumor markers. Our strategy involves using a normalized resistance change ratio, which helps to minimize uncertainties associated with material variances, chemical functionalization interferences, and device fabrication tolerances. Anchored at a “37 U/mL CA 19-9 baseline,” our approach significantly improves screening efficiency and reliability for both normal and cancerous concentrations. Validation was conducted using 35 clinical serum specimens obtained from both healthy individuals and cancer patients. Among these, 33 specimens exhibited the expected response to the standard value of 37 U/mL, resulting in an accuracy rate of 94%. Furthermore, we have included detection data for standard carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) to provide insights into future possibilities for chiplets that facilitate the simultaneous detection of multiple biomarkers, offering versatility and efficiency.

19. 18 A/1020 V p-GaN-gated HEMTs with Isosceles Trapezoidal-Shaped Multi-Finger Structure

Abstract

In this article, we investigate the effects of gate and drain field plates and isosceles trapezoidal-shaped multi-finger structures on the characteristics of high current p-GaN-gated high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs). By optimizing the lengths of gate and drain field plates, the p-GaN-gated HEMTs with 200 μm have a breakdown voltage of 1893 V, a specific on-resistance of 7.0 mΩ-cm2, and a Baliga figure of merit (BFOM) value of 511 MW cm−2. Using the optimized isosceles trapezoidal-shaped multi-finger metallization on the source and drain, the p-GaN-gated HEMT with a 100 mm gate width can reach a current of 2.3 A. Combining all the optimum parameters of field plates and isosceles trapezoidal-shaped multi-finger, the fabricated 600 mm p-GaN-gated HEMT exhibits an output current of 18 A, an on-resistance of 0.7 Ω, and a breakdown voltage of 1020 V. Furthermore, the device also exhibits good thermal stability at high temperatures. These results demonstrate the potential and advantages of p-GaN-gated HEMT for power applications.

Abstract

Silver fox is color variant of Vulpes vulpes. At present, there are few studies on phylogeny of Canidae and Caniformia. In this article, we determined and described the complete mitogenome of silver fox for the first time, which is 16,723 bp in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, one origin of replication on the light-strand (OL) and a putative control region (CR). The overall base composition is 31.4% A, 27.9% T, 26.0% C, 14.7% G, respectively, with a AT bias (59.3%). Ten protein-coding genes use the initiation codon ATG while ND2, ND3 and ND5 use ATA. Most of them have TAA as the stop codon, except ND2 uses TAG, Cytb uses AGA, and COX3, ND3, ND4 use an incomplete stop codon TA. The information is expected to provide useful molecular data for further taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of Canidae and Caniformia.

Abstract

Various sizes and morphologies of Au–Fe 3O 4 heterostructures including dumbbell-like nanoparticles (DBNPs) and flower-like nanoparticles (FLNPs) have been synthesized via thermal decomposition of iron–oleate complex in the presence of different sizes of Au seeds for MR imaging application. The size of Au seeds and the concentration of iron–oleate complex have been proved to be crucial parameters for controlling the morphology of Au–Fe 3O 4 heterostructures. The use of 5-nm Au seeds can only fabricate Au–Fe 3O 4 DBNPs, while both DBNPs and FLNPs are produced by using 10-nm Au NPs as the seeds. The obtained Au–Fe 3O 4 heterostructures are then modified with 8-arm PEG-amine and show a good phase transfer with satisfactory hydrodynamic size for further MR imaging application. The Au–Fe 3O 4 DBNPs with small Au seeds result in an increase in spin–spin relaxivity, and the r2 values are 125.5 ± 13.5, 118.3 ± 2.3, and 143.8 ± 3.2 mM −1 s −1 for 5-nm Au–Fe 3O 4 DBNPs, 10-nm Au–Fe 3O 4 DBNPs, and 10-nm Au–Fe 3O 4 FLNPs, respectively. The Au–Fe 3O 4 FLNPs shows an increased relaxivity when compared with that of Au–Fe 3O 4 DBNPs, presumably attributed to the magnetic coupling effect among Fe 3O 4 domains on the surface of Au seeds. Abstract

The phylogenetic and taxonomic position of the American minkNeovison visonhave long been unclear. In this paper, the complete mitogenome ofN. visonwas sequenced and characterized. The total length was 16,594 bp and typically consists of 37 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNAs, 22 tRNA, a large control region (CR) and a light-strand replication origin (OL). Gene contents, locations, and arrangements were identical to those of typical vertebrate. The overall base composition is 33.6%, 25.4%, 27.8% and 13.3% for A, C, T and G, respectively, with a moderate bias on AT content (61.4%).
