PurposeThe aim of this study is to explore the status of contemporary ethnic entrepreneurship studies in 1999‐2008 in order to map the intellectual structure of ethnic entrepreneurship research and to provide insights for future research in this field.Design/methodology/approachThis study collected citation data from SSCI, resulting in a data set of 403 journal articles and 18,656 cited references. Then using co‐citation analysis, this study identified the core research themes in the ethnic entrepreneurship literature in 1999‐2008.FindingsThe results showed that contemporary ethnic entrepreneurship studies clustered around a few key research themes and their research foci have shifted from research on enclave economies, ethnic enterprises, and social embeddedness to research on immigrant entrepreneurs, immigrant networks, and transnational entrepreneurs.Research limitations/implicationsWith the qualification of citation and co‐citation analysis, this study profiles the changing paradigms of contemporary ethnic entrepreneurship studies and traces the development of ethnic entrepreneurship research, and thus provides important insights on future ethnic entrepreneurship research, including transnational entrepreneurs, theory refinement and theory development on ethnic entrepreneurship, as well as ethnic culture and entrepreneurship. Limitations of using SSCI data are also discussed.Originality/valueThe intellectual structure of ethnic entrepreneurship literature has received relatively little attention in spite that a large number of studies have been done in this field. This study provides researchers with a new way of profiling key themes and their relationships in ethnic entrepreneurship, which will help the academia and practitioners better understand contemporary ethnic entrepreneurship studies.

The purpose of this study is to identify the evolution of the intellectual structure of strategic management studies and to propose a theory of an invisible network of knowledge. By analyzing 303,402 citations of 4,616 articles published in SCI and SSCI journals in the strategic management field from year 2003 to year 2012, this study maps the intellectual structure of strategic management studies. This article dwells upon the wide spreading social tags of website applications. By so called "crowd wisdom", the tag cloud analysis reveals the preliminary investigation from a social network viewpoint, provides researchers with profiles of strategic management related subjects and theories, and sheds light on future directions of studies. The contribution of this study is to provide important insights and implications of current and future research paradigms for both management scholars and practitioners. Index Terms—C o-citation

In this article, we aimed to investigate the dynamics of higher education texts from 2002 to 2011 by identifying the most frequently cited references, the highest cited authors, and the correlations among the co-citations. Citation and Co-Citation analyses were used to examine 1,941 cited journal articles from 41,001 publications published in SCI and SSCI databases. We juxtaposed the status of citations between two periods of 2002-2006 and 2007-2011. Results showed research trends changed significantly. Some generative reflections, methodological limitations, future research recommendations were discussed as well.

This article examines the literature of international ethnic entrepreneurship research and explores its historical development over the past four decades. With citation data from Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), including 627 journal articles and 25,731 cited references, we conducted a co-citation analysis to explore the intellectual structure of international ethnic entrepreneurship studies. The results show that international ethnic entrepreneurship studies focus on Chinese ethnic entrepreneurs, followed by Cubans, Koreans and blacks. The results also show that contemporary international ethnic entrepreneurship studies have shifted their foci from exploring ethnic-immigrant enclaves to studying immigrant business and self-employment as well as social embeddedness in ethnic business over the past four decades. This study thus identifies the knowledge essentials of ethnic entrepreneurship research and profiles the most influential journals, publications and scholars and their relationships in this field. The results of this study also provide a useful tool for researchers to access the literature of international ethnic entrepreneurship research.

This study explores the research paradigms of contemporary business ethics research in 2001–2008. With citation data from the top two business ethics journals included in the Social Sciences Citation Index, this study conducts citation and co-citation analysis to identify the most important publications, scholars, and research themes in the business ethics area and then maps the intellectual structure of business ethics studies between 2001 and 2008. The results show that current business ethics studies cluster around four major research themes, including morality and social contract theory, ethical decision making, corporate social responsibility, and stakeholder theory. This study helps profile the invisible network of knowledge production in business ethics and provides important insights on current research paradigms of business ethics studies.

To explore the intellectual structure of mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) research in the last decade, this study identified the most important publications and the most influential scholars as well as the correlations among these scholar’s publications. In this study, bibliometric, social network analysis techniques are used to investigate the intellectual pillars of the MANET literature. By analyzing 41,001 citations of 1,941 articles published in SCI and SSCI journal in MANET area between 2001 and 2010, this study maps a knowledge network of MANET studies. The results of the mapping can help identify the research direction of MANET research and provide a valuable tool for researchers to access the literature in this area.

China's economy and technology have experienced astounding growth in the last two decades. The OECD 2005 reports show that China has overtaken the USA to become the world's largest exporter of information and communications technology goods. In order to assess the progress China has made in technology development, this study examines the inventive activities in China and the pattern of international collaborations between China and other major industrialized countries or regions. This study analyzes the patent data from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) focusing on joint patent application between China and the eight most inventive OECD countries and two Asian economic entities (South Korea and Taiwan). The results reveal increasing collaborations in inventive activities between China and other major inventive countries over the past decade, and suggest that China's technology capability may have begun to boom along with its fast economic growth.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to map the intellectual structure of conflict management studies and to investigate the key themes, concepts, and their relationships of conflict management literature in the past decade.Design/methodology/approachCitation and co‐citation analysis and social network analysis were used to trace the development path of conflict management research. The data were collected by searching the SSCI databases, based on 556 journal articles which were published between 1997 and 2006, and their cited references were analyzed and profiled.FindingsThe paper shows that conflict management literature focuses on three key themes: workplace conflict and conflict management styles, cultural differences in conflict management, and conflict management in practice. In addition, research on group conflict and work performance has gained momentum in recent years.Originality/valueThe intellectual structure of conflict management literature has received little attention in spite that a large number of studies have been done on conflict management. This paper will expose researchers to a new way of profiling key themes and their relationships in conflict management area, which will help academia and practitioners understand better contemporary conflict management studies.

Patent application encompasses valuable information about inventive activities. This study examines the pattern of international collaboration across countries in inventive activities using the information about inventors and assignees as defined by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This study first develops a series of indices and then uses the patent information from the USPTO databases on the fields of inventors and assignees to evaluate these indices, with the data from the eight most inventive OECD countries and two Asian economic entities (South Korea and Taiwan) for a span of 1980–2005. The results reveal a pattern of increasing collaboration in inventive activities across the world over the past two decades, which may suggest that the world has begun to embrace the inceptive stage of “Techno-globalism.”

The knowledge network associated with the young and emerging field of International Entrepreneurship is defined through a Bolean search progression of key words on the SSCI data bases from 1992 to 2000. The knowledge network of an applied field portrays, and usually follows, the actual developmental path of its corresponding field. Some 287 articles document the early emergence of International Entrepreneureship as a field of scholarly inquiry. When a field is young and in need of theoretical foundations, the knowledge networks of other fields may provide for those early needs. This is the case of International Entrepreneurship. The rich theoretical foundations of the two fields of International Business and Entrepreneureship, among others, have nourished and accelerated the internationalization process of entrepreneurship. A detailed analysis of 7,651 citations contained in the contributions of the 287 documents reported here traces International Entrepreneurship's rich, yet young, developmental path. This analysis reveals a wealth of information, for example the lists of highly-cited books, articles, authors and their affiliated institutions presented here.

To map the intellectual structure of human resource management studies in the past decade, this study investigated the most important publications and the most influential scholars as well as the correlations among these documents by analyzing 33,132 citations of 1,267 articles published by SSCI journals in human resource management area between 1996 and 2005. This study further mapped the invisible network of knowledge of human resource management using co-citation analysis. Such a mapping can help identify the paradigm shift of human resource management research, and provide a valuable tool for researchers to access the literature in this area.

Summary form only given. This paper is a summary version of a broader study which its domain of inquiry is the interphase between the fields of management of technology and organizational behavior. It is motivated by the impact of an organization on the ultimate outcome of a given technology evolving, or managed, within that organizational context. However, the paper does not study this subject directly. Instead, it looks at the antecedents and constituent foundations of the emerging interdisciplinary sub-field of the contemporary interdisciplinary study of organization and technology.

Summary form only given. The main theme inherent in this paper is that technological capabilities are not fully understood and remain understudied as a field of inquiry. As a proxy measure of such capabilities, a family of related patents may be viewed as the revealed manifestation of technological capabilities (RTC) at micro level. Patent databases have stored a wealth of publicly-held and verified knowledge. Obviously, this type of publicly-accessible and -protected indicators can be used to detect intellectual/technological capital in competitive environments. No individual, company, or country should ignore this invaluable competitive information in its research frontier. Before investing in a search for, and inclusion of, for example, tacit knowledge, embedded knowledge, embodied knowledge and so on, one must start with this verified knowledge. Moreover, it would be waste of time and effort, if such indicators of revealed technological capability knowledge are not cost-effectively data-mined prior to any large-scale research. Therefore, no patent or patent study should be ignored by any competitor with related ideas, as any patent can then act as the hidden "root system" for supporting the further growth of a "tree" and its new branches. When the full grown tree becomes visible, it is to late. Therefore, the data-mining or text-mining (and their further refined versions) should be utilized to reveal the existence of knowledge about any technological opportunities and/or research frontiers, however rudimentary prior to any related undertaking. This paper provides a methodology and examples for such an approach.

To map the intellectual structure of Technology Management research in this century, this study identified the most important publications and the most influential scholars as well as the correlations among these scholar’s publications. This paper presents a comparative study of the technological development paths and the technological profiles of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in two Asian newly industrialised countries - South Korea and Taiwan - in comparison with six advanced industrialised countries as well as a list of selected highly-populated nations. Using US patent statistics as technology indicators, the quantitative and comparative analysis of this paper shows that South Korea and Taiwan have achieved a level of technological capabilities that rival those of the advanced countries. They have achieved this through a reliance on generating and accumulating innovative and technological capabilities of their own as opposed to transferring them from other countries. The analysis also shows that the industrial structure has played a major, but different, role in these countries. In South Korea, these capabilities are concentrated in a small number of relatively larger firms (i.e. the Korean chaebols). In contrast, they are spread across a large number of relatively smaller firms in Taiwan (i.e. Taiwanese innovative SMEs). The relative technological success of Taiwan is therefore attributable to innovative activity of her SMEs.
