Abstract. Background:. Breast cancer is ranked among the most prevalent malignancies in the Chinese female population. However, comprehensive reports detailing the latest epidemiological data and attributable disease burden have not been extensively documented. Methods:. In 2018, high-quality cancer surveillance data were recorded in 700 population-based cancer registries in China. We extracted data on female breast cancers (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision [ICD-10]: C50) and estimated the incidence and mortality in 2022 according to the baseline data and corresponding trends from 2010 to 2018. Pathological types were classified according to the ICD for Oncology, 3rd Edition codes. Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were calculated as the sum of the years of life lost (YLLs) and years lived with disability (YLDs). Results:. In 2022, approximately 357,200 new female breast cancer cases and 75,000 deaths occurred in China, accounting for 15.59% and 7.94% of total new cancer cases and deaths, respectively. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) was 33.04 per 100,000. When analyzed by pathological type, the ASIRs for papillary neoplasms, invasive breast carcinoma, rare and salivary gland-type tumors, and other types were 1.13, 29.79, 0.24, and 1.88 per 100,000, respectively. The age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) was 6.10 per 100,000. A total of 2,628,000 DALYs were found to be attributable to female breast cancer in China, comprising 2,278,300 YLLs and 349,700 YLDs. The ASIR, ASMR, and age-standardized rate (ASR) for DALYs in urban areas were consistently higher than those in rural areas. We observed a four-fold increase in the ASIR and ASR for DALYs and an eight-fold increase in the ASMR among females over 55 years compared with those aged under 55 years. Conclusion:. These data provide invaluable insights into the latest epidemiology of female breast cancer in China and highlight the urgency for disease prevention and control strategy formulation.

Background Obesity and severe knee osteoarthritis (KOA) lead to significant gait and muscle adaptations. However, the relationship between core muscle strength and the severity of KOA in obese patients remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the association between muscle strength adaptation and the severity of KOA in obese individuals. Methods We recruited 119 obese participants with unilateral KOA from January 2021 to December 2023, all classified with mild to moderate KOA grades. KOA severity was assessed using the Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), which categorized participants into two groups based on disease severity. Electromyographic data from the psoas, gluteus medius, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, rectus femoris, medial gastrocnemius, lateral gastrocnemius, tibialis anterior, and biceps femoris muscles were collected during isometric and dynamic knee extension. Results Significant differences were observed in all selected muscles between the affected knee joint and the contralateral side during both dynamic and isometric knee extensions. The difference in electromyographic data—including mean absolute value (MAV), root mean square (RMS), and center frequency (CF)—was significantly different across groups categorized by KOA severity. Notably, the MAV values of the vastus medialis, lateral gastrocnemius, and biceps femoris, as well as the CF values of the medial and lateral gastrocnemius, showed no significant differences in some instances during both dynamic and isometric extensions. Conclusion This study indicates that obese individuals with KOA exhibit lower muscle intensity and higher fatigability in comparison to the contralateral side during both isometric and dynamic knee extensions. Furthermore, significant reductions in muscle intensity were observed in the psoas, gluteus medius, vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, medial gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior muscles, correlating with the advanced severity of KOA.

In manufacturing, the position tracking accuracy and stability of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors are often challenged by uncertainties, especially in complex environments. Existing control methods struggle to balance fast response with high-precision tracking. To address this, we propose a Prescribed Performance Global Non-Singular Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control (PPGNFTSMC) method using a linear extended state observer (LESO). A smooth and bounded prescribed performance function is designed to ensure finite-time convergence while satisfying performance requirements such as overshoot and settling time. Based on this function, the system error is reconstructed to align the system response with predefined specifications. The reconstructed error is then used to design a global non-singular fast terminal sliding mode surface. A LESO is employed for real-time disturbance estimation, and the disturbance estimates, along with the sliding mode surface, are used to derive the control law for the position–speed integrated controller. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the comparison methods in transient response, tracking accuracy, and robustness across various signal types.

The utilization of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing allows for fast and effective soil moisture content (SMC) monitoring. Scale conversion can obtain remote sensing images at multiple resolutions and offer the possibility of improving the estimation accuracy of SMC, which is crucial for precision agriculture. To explore the effect of upscaling conversion on SMC monitoring with UAV remote sensing, multispectral images and SMC data at different soil depths were acquired. The multispectral image with an original spatial resolution of 0.1 m was continuously upscaled to 6 m (with a step of 0.1 m and a total of 60 levels). The correlation coefficient method was adopted to determine the optimal scale, and spectral indices at the original and optimal scales were calculated. SMC inversion models at different depths were constructed at the original and optimal scales by multiple linear regression (MLR) and back propagation neural networks (BP), respectively. The results showed that the correlation of UAV multispectral data with SMC displayed a change in first enhancement and then fluctuating weakness with the increase of the upscaled levels. The optimal scale of UAV multispectral remote sensing for monitoring SMC at all soil depths was about 2 m. The BP models were significantly better than the MLR models. For example, in the SMC estimation at 0-20 cm, the RMSE of the BP model was reduced from 0.0110 to 0.0087 (20.9%). This study can provide theoretical and technical references for improving the accuracy of UAV multispectral remote sensing for SMC monitoring.

We aimed to verify the feasibility of using shear wave elastography (SWE) to quantify knee scars and the elastic modulus of scar tissues. Overall, 16 participants underwent SWE assessments and range-of-motion measurement and completed the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score. The inter-rater reliability for SWE in the suprapatellar bursa, below the patellar tendon, and in the medial and lateral trochlear groove remained within 0.861–0.907. The SWE values in the four regions increased with increasing knee angle, and significant differences were observed between the values for below the patellar tendon and the suprapatellar bursa at knee flexion angles of 60° and 90°. The SWE values of the medial and lateral trochlear groove at 30°, 60°, and 90° knee flexion were higher on the affected side. A negative correlation was observed between the SWE values for the lateral trochlear groove at 0°, 30°, and 60° and those for below the patellar tendon at 0° and the suprapatellar bursa at 30° with both active and passive knee extension. The suprapatellar bursa value at 60° exhibited a positive correlation with both knee flexion and passive knee flexion, whereas that of the suprapatellar bursa at 90° exhibited a positive correlation with both the range of motion and passive range of motion. SWE is a replicable and effective method for detecting scar strength in the knee joint.

Summary: An unprecedented strategy for preparing a series of sulfur ylides through electro-oxidative quinylation of sulfides in batch and continuous flow has been developed. Good to excellent yields were obtained with excellent functional group compatibility and good concentration tolerance under exogenous oxidant- and transition metal-free conditions. Advantageously, this electrosynthesis methodology was scalable with higher daily production and steady production was achieved attributing to the use of micro-flow cells.

Abstract Background Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is an important biofuel crop that may contribute to replacing petroleum fuels. However, slow seedling growth and soil salinization affect the growth and development of switchgrass. An increasing number of studies have shown that beneficial microorganisms promote plant growth and increase tolerance to salinity stress. However, the feasibility of inoculating switchgrass with Azorhizobium caulinodans ORS571 to enhance the growth and salt tolerance of its seedlings is unclear. Our previous study showed that A. caulinodans ORS571 could colonize wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and thereby promote its growth and development and regulate the gene expression levels of microRNAs (miRNAs). Results In this study, we systematically studied the impact of A. caulinodans ORS571 on switchgrass growth and development and the response to salinity stress; we also studied the underlying mechanisms during these biological processes. Inoculation with A. caulinodans ORS571 significantly alleviated the effect of salt stress on seedling growth. Under normal conditions, A. caulinodans ORS571 significantly increased fresh plant weight, chlorophyll a content, protein content, and peroxidase (POD) activity in switchgrass seedlings. Under salt stress, the fresh weight, dry weight, shoot and root lengths, and chlorophyll contents were all significantly increased, and some of these parameters even recovered to normal levels after inoculation with A. caulinodans ORS571. Soluble sugar and protein contents and POD and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were also significantly increased, contrary to the results for proline. Additionally, A. caulinodans ORS571 may alleviate salt stress by regulating miRNAs. Twelve selected miRNAs were all upregulated to different degrees under salt stress in switchgrass seedlings. However, the levels of miR169, miR171, miR319, miR393, miR535, and miR854 were decreased significantly after inoculation with A. caulinodans ORS571 under salt stress, in contrast to the expression level of miR399. Conclusion This study revealed that A. caulinodans ORS571 increased the salt tolerance of switchgrass seedlings by increasing their water content, photosynthetic efficiency, osmotic pressure maintenance, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging abilities and regulating miRNA expression. This work provides a new, creative idea for improving the salt tolerance of switchgrass seedlings.

Objective Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral entrapment neuropathy, and endoscopic carpal tunnel release (ECTR) is one of the minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of CTS. Based on the shortcomings of ECTR, we designed the “Modified Soft Tissue Release Kit” to assist the endoscopic operation. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of endoscopic treatment of CTS using this kit. Methods This retrospective review included 57 patients (86 wrists) who underwent ECTR using the “Modified Soft Tissue Release Kit” at our department between January 2017 and August 2019. Three scale scores (i.e., Quick–Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand [QDASH]; Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire [BCTSQ]: symptom severity [BCTSQ‐SS] and functional status [BCTSQ‐FS]) were recorded to assess hand function and symptoms preoperatively, 1 month postoperatively, 3 months postoperatively, and at the last follow‐up. We also asked patients to answer a satisfaction question during follow‐up. Pre‐ and post‐operation scores were compared using paired Wilcoxon signed‐rank test. Spearman's rank‐order correlation was used to evaluate the relationship between scale scores and patient satisfaction. Results A total of 55 patients (83 wrists) were followed up, with an average follow‐up of 27.2 ± 9.3 months. The median preoperative QDASH score was 45.5; the scores at 1 month postoperatively, 3 months postoperatively, and the last follow‐up were 4.5, 0, and 0, respectively, with a significant decrease noted compared with the preoperative scores (P

Abstract Sustainable intensification needs to optimize irrigation and fertilization strategies while increasing crop yield. To enable more precision and effective agricultural management, a bi-level screening and bi-level optimization framework is proposed. Irrigation and fertilization dates are obtained by upper-level screening and upper-level optimization. Subsequently, due to the complexity of the problem, the lower-level optimization uses a data-driven evolutionary algorithm, which combines the fast non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), surrogate-assisted model of radial basis function and Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer to handle the expensive objective problem and produce a set of optimal solutions representing a trade-off between conflicting objectives. Then, the lower-level screening quickly finds better irrigation and fertilization strategies among thousands of solutions. Finally, the experiment produces a better irrigation and fertilization strategy, with water consumption reduced by 44%, nitrogen application reduced by 37%, and economic benefits increased by 7 to 8%.

Abstract The biologically inspired metaheuristic algorithm obtains the optimal solution by simulating the living habits or behavior characteristics of creatures in nature. It has been widely used in many fields. A new bio-inspired algorithm, Aphids Optimization Algorithm (AOA), is proposed in this paper. This algorithm simulates the foraging process of aphids with wings, including the generation of winged aphids, flight mood, and attack mood. Concurrently, the corresponding optimization models are presented according to the above phases. At the phase of the flight mood, according to the comprehensive influence of energy and the airflow, the individuals adaptively choose the flight mode to migrate; at the phase of attack mood, individuals use their sense of smell and vision to locate food sources for movement. Experiments on benchmark test functions and two classical engineering design problems, indicate that the desired AOA is more efficient than other metaheuristic algorithms.

IntroductionIn the past, various techniques have been used to improve motor imagery (MI), such as immersive virtual-reality (VR) and kinesthetic rehearsal. While electroencephalography (EEG) has been used to study the differences in brain activity between VR-based action observation and kinesthetic motor imagery (KMI), there has been no investigation into their combined effect. Prior research has demonstrated that VR-based action observation can enhance MI by providing both visual information and embodiment, which is the perception of oneself as part of the observed entity. Additionally, KMI has been found to produce similar brain activity to physically performing a task. Therefore, we hypothesized that utilizing VR to offer an immersive visual scenario for action observation while participants performed kinesthetic motor imagery would significantly improve cortical activity related to MI.MethodsIn this study, 15 participants (9 male, 6 female) performed kinesthetic motor imagery of three hand tasks (drinking, wrist flexion-extension, and grabbing) both with and without VR-based action observation.ResultsOur results indicate that combining VR-based action observation with KMI enhances brain rhythmic patterns and provides better task differentiation compared to KMI without action observation.DiscussionThese findings suggest that using VR-based action observation alongside kinesthetic motor imagery can improve motor imagery performance.

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the location of transverse carpal ligament (TCL) transection on the biomechanical property of the carpal arch structure. It was hypothesized that carpal tunnel release would lead to an increase of the carpal arch compliance (CAC) in a location-dependent manner.MethodsA pseudo-3D finite element model of the volar carpal arch at the distal carpal tunnel was used to simulate arch area change under different intratunnel pressures (0–72 mmHg) after TCL transection at different locations along the transverse direction of the TCL.ResultsThe CAC of the intact carpal arch was 0.092 mm2/mmHg, and the simulated transections ranging from 8 mm ulnarly to 8 mm radially from the center point of the TCL led to increased CACs that were 2.6–3.7 times of that of the intact carpal arch. The CACs after radial transections were greater than those ulnarly transected carpal arches.ConclusionThe TCL transection in the radial region was biomechanically favorable in reducing carpal tunnel constraint for median nerve decompression.

Ankle sprain is a frequent type of sports injury leading to lateral ligament injury. The anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) is a primary ligamentous stabilizer of the ankle joint and typically the most vulnerable ligament injured in a lateral ankle sprain (LAS). This study aimed to quantitively investigate the effect of the thickness and elastic modulus of ATFL on anterior ankle joint stiffness (AAJS) by developing nine subject-specific finite element (FE) models under acute injury, chronic injury, and control conditions of ATFL. A 120 N forward force was applied at the posterior calcaneus leading to an anterior translation of the calcaneus and talus to simulate the anterior drawer test (ADT). In the results, the ratio of the forward force to the talar displacement was used to assess the AAJS, which increased by 5.85% in the acute group and decreased by 19.78% in the chronic group, compared to those of the control group. An empirical equation described the relationship between AAJS, thickness, and elastic modulus (R-square 0.98). The equation proposed in this study provided an approach to quantify AAJS and revealed the effect of the thickness and the elastic modulus of ATFL on ankle stability, which may shed light on the potential diagnosis of lateral ligament injury.

Objectives: Deep tissue injury is a common form of pressure ulcers in muscle tissues under bony prominences caused by sustained pressure or shear, which has a great impact on patients with restricted mobility such as spinal cord injury. Frequent spasms in spinal cord injury patients featured by muscle stiffening may be one of the factors leading to deep tissue injury. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the gluteal muscle shear modulus and intramuscular compressive/shear stress/strain. Methods: A semi-3D finite element model of the human buttock was established using COMSOL software and the acquired biomechanical data were analyzed through Pearson correlation and Spearman correlation. Results: Results showed that the compressive stress, strain energy density, and average von Mises stress increased with the increase of the gluteal muscle shear modulus. Conclusion: These results may indicate muscle stiffening caused by muscle spasms could lead to higher deep tissue injury development risk as well as shed light on effective treatments for relieving muscular sclerosis mechanically.

PurposeThis study aimed to assess the usability of a virtual reality-assisted sensorimotor activation (VRSMA) apparatus for individual digit rehabilitation. The study had two main objectives: Firstly, to collect preliminary data on the expectations and preferences of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) regarding virtual reality (VR) and an apparatus-assisted therapy for their affected digits. Secondly, to evaluate the usability of the VRSMA apparatus that was developed.MethodsThe VRSMA system consists of an apparatus that provides sensory and motor stimulation via a vibratory motor and pressure sensor attached to a button, and a virtual reality-based visual cue provided by texts overlaid on top of a 3D model of a hand. The study involved 10 CTS patients who completed five blocks of VRSMA with their affected hand, with each block corresponding to the five digits. The patients were asked to complete a user expectations questionnaire before experiencing the VRSMA, and a user evaluation questionnaire after completing the VRSMA. Expectations for VRSMA were obtained from the questionnaire results using a House of Quality (HoQ) analysis.ResultsIn the survey for expectations, participants rated certain attributes as important for a rehabilitation device for CTS, with mean ratings above 4 for attributes such as ease of use, ease of understanding, motivation, and improvement of hand function based on clinical evidence. The level of immersion and an interesting rehabilitation regime received lower ratings, with mean ratings above 3.5. The survey evaluating VRSMA showed that the current prototype was overall satisfactory with a mean rating of 3.9 out of 5. Based on the HoQ matrix, the highest priority for development of the VRSMA was to enhance device comfort and usage time. This was followed by the need to perform more clinical studies to provide evidence of the efficacy of the VRSMA. Other technical characteristics, such as VRSMA content and device reliability, had lower priority scores.ConclusionThe current study presents a potential for an individual digit sensorimotor rehabilitation device that is well-liked by CTS patients.

Cyclic mechanical stimulation could lead to subsequent biomechanical and biological effects on cells. Viscoelastic cells could deform or show energy dissipation with hysteresis behavior in response to external cyclic compression. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cyclic compression on a single viscoelastic myoblast through a confocal–based cell–specific finite element model, including cell membrane tensile strain and damaged elements. Sinusoidal compression was applied to the apical surface of the myoblast (cell membrane) with compressive stress of 500 ​± ​500 ​Pa (with stress offset at 500 ​Pa and amplitude of 500 ​Pa) at 0 ​Hz (static compression of 500 ​Pa), 0.25 ​Hz, 0.5 ​Hz, 0.75 ​Hz, 1 ​Hz, 5 ​Hz, and 10 ​Hz. Results showed that the ratio of average tensile strain integral in all cell membrane elements over a certain period of time (T) to that duration (T) (MAS index) decreased under cyclic compression compared to that of static compression in the short term (within 4 ​s). Furthermore, compared to static compression, the percentage of damaged elements of cell membrane under cyclic compression decreased assuming a 3% cell membrane tensile strain damage threshold. The optimal cyclic compression frequency 0.25 ​Hz led to the largest difference of MAS index under cyclic compression and static compression. These results may provide support for the application of cyclic compressive stimulation in the prevention of cell damage.

Abstract Background Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common peripheral vestibular disorders leading to balance difficulties and increased fall risks. This study aims to investigate the walking stability of BPPV patients in clinical settings and propose a machine-learning-based classification method for determining the severity of gait disturbances of BPPV. Methods Twenty-seven BPPV outpatients and twenty-seven healthy subjects completed level walking trials at self-preferred speed in clinical settings while wearing two accelerometers on the head and lower trunk, respectively. Temporo-spatial variables and six walking stability related variables [root mean square (RMS), harmonic ratio (HR), gait variability, step/stride regularity, and gait symmetry] derived from the acceleration signals were analyzed. A support vector machine model (SVM) based on the gait variables of BPPV patients were developed to differentiate patients from healthy controls and classify the handicapping effects of dizziness imposed by BPPV. Results The results showed that BPPV patients employed a conservative gait and significantly reduced walking stability compared to the healthy controls. Significant different mediolateral HR at the lower trunk and anteroposterior step regularity at the head were found in BPPV patients among mild, moderate, and severe DHI (dizziness handicap inventory) subgroups. SVM classification achieved promising accuracies with area under the curve (AUC) of 0.78, 0.83, 0.85 and 0.96 respectively for differentiating patients from healthy controls and classifying the three stages of DHI subgroups. Study results suggest that the proposed gait analysis that is based on the coupling of wearable accelerometers and machine learning provides an objective approach for assessing gait disturbances and handicapping effects of dizziness imposed by BPPV.

Random forwarding networks play a significant role in solving security and load balancing problems. As a random quantity easily obtained by both sender and receiver, the end-to-end delay of random forwarding networks can be utilized as an effective random source for cryptography-related applications. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model of Random forwarding networks and give the calculation method of end-to-end delay distribution. In exploring the upper limit of the randomness of end-to-end delay, we find that the end-to-end delay collision of different forwarding routes is the main reason for the decrease of end-to-end delay randomness. Some of these collisions can be optimized by better network deployment, while others are caused by some interesting network topology, which is unavoidable. For further analysis, we propose an algorithm to calculate the inevitable collision in random forwarding networks skillfully by using Symbol Matrix, and we give the optimal node forwarding strategy with the maximum randomness of the end-to-end delay for a given number of middle forwarding nodes and forwarding times. Finally, we introduce a specific application of generating symmetric keys by using the randomness of the end-to-end delay.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the cortical activity and digit classification performance during tactile imagery (TI) of a vibratory stimulus at the index, middle, and thumb digits within the left hand in healthy individuals. Furthermore, the cortical activities and classification performance of the compound TI were compared with similar compound motor imagery (MI) with the same digits as TI in the same subjects. Methods: Twelve healthy right-handed adults with no history of upper limb injury, musculoskeletal condition, or neurological disorder participated in the study. The study evaluated the event-related desynchronization (ERD) response and brain–computer interface (BCI) classification performance on discriminating between the digits in the left-hand during the imagery of vibrotactile stimuli to either the index, middle, or thumb finger pads for TI and while performing a motor activity with the same digits for MI. A supervised machine learning technique was applied to discriminate between the digits within the same given limb for both imagery conditions. Results: Both TI and MI exhibited similar patterns of ERD in the alpha and beta bands at the index, middle, and thumb digits within the left hand. While TI had significantly lower ERD for all three digits in both bands, the classification performance of TI-based BCI (77.74 ± 6.98%) was found to be similar to the MI-based BCI (78.36 ± 5.38%). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that compound tactile imagery can be a viable alternative to MI for BCI classification. The study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of TI in BCI applications, and future research can build on this work to explore the potential of TI-based BCI for motor rehabilitation and the control of external devices.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the three dimensional (3D) femoral head displacement in patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and Crowe classification. Methods Retrospectively, CT scans of 60 DDH patients and 55 healthy demography-matched healthy control subjects were analyzed. Using the anterior pelvic plane a pelvic anatomic coordinate system was established. The center coordinates of the femoral heads of both the DDH patients and control subjects were quantified relative to the pelvic coordinate system and were mapped proportionally to a representative normal pelvis for comparison. Background: Owing to the compressive nature of the neuropathy, patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) have prolonged distal motor latency (DML), sensory nerve latency (SNL), median nerve swelling and restricted median nerve mobility. The purpose of this study was to noninvasively augment carpal tunnel space using radioulnar wrist compression (RWC) and evaluate its effects on median nerve pathological properties in patients with CTS. It was hypothesized that the RWC intervention would reduce the median nerve DML, SNL and cross-sectional area (CSA) and enhance longitudinal median nerve mobility in patients. with CTS. Methods: Eleven patients diagnosed with CTS participated in this study. A portable RWC intervention splint was developed to apply 10 N of compressive force across the wrist. Three daily sessions of RWC were performed over 4 weeks of intervention (15 min per session, 45 min per day, 7 days per week). Each 15-min session consisted of three 5-min blocks of RWC, with a 1-min rest in between consecutive blocks. Patients were evaluated at Week 0 (baseline), Week 2 (mid-intervention) and Week 4 (end of intervention). Summary: Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of proteins mediates the assembly of biomolecular condensates involved in physiological and pathological processes. Identifying the minimalistic building blocks and the sequence determinant of protein phase separation is an urgent need but remains challenging partially due to lack of methodologies to characterize the phase behavior. Here, we demonstrate computational tools to efficiently quantify the microscopic fluidity of liquid condensates and the temperature-dependent phase diagram of peptides. We comprehensively explore the LLPS abilities of all 400 dipeptide combinations of coded amino acids and observe the occurrences of spontaneous LLPS in three categories of dipeptides. Our predictions are validated by turbidity assays and differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy. We demonstrate that dipeptides, minimal but complete, possess multivalent interactions sufficient for LLPS, suggesting LLPS is a general property of peptides and proteins, independent of their sequence length. This study paves the way for the prediction and characterization of peptide phase behavior at the molecular level.

We discuss an algorithm for the autoregression (AR) model as a typical time-series model. By analyzing the structure of the AR model, we highlight the shortcomings of traditional algorithms for model parameter estimation and propose an approach to overcome the shortcomings of traditional solutions for the AR model. The errors-in-variables (EIV) model is used to solve an existing problem. There is an obvious difference between the AR model and a traditional model. For the AR model, one observation datum appears repeatedly; hence, the residual of one observation datum is not unique. Furthermore, in theory, the optimal estimation of model parameters cannot be obtained by current solutions. Based on an analysis of the AR model, we focus on how to obtain the optimal estimation when the observation data of the AR model are contaminated by outliers. The median function is used to establish a modified solution for the AR model based on the institute of geodesy & geophysics, Chinese academy of sciences (IGG) weight function by comparison with current algorithms for the robust estimation of the EIV model. We propose an iterative algorithm based on median function. Finally, we apply two numerical instances to compare the proposed algorithm with traditional algorithms and draw conclusions from results of the instances.

An improved cycle-slip repair model is proposed for BDS triple-frequency undifferenced observations. Two extra-wide-lane code-phase combinations and one additional geometry-free (GF) carrier-phase combination are employed. To ensure the GF phase combination follows a normal distribution, the residual ionospheric variation of the GF phase combination is corrected in real-time using the previous observation sequence without cycle slip. The integer least squares principle, based on the least-squares ambiguity decorrelation adjustment, is used to solve the fixed value of cycle slip. The corresponding covariance matrix of floating cycle-slip estimations used for construction is updated in real time to improve the fixed efficiency of cycle slip. Moreover, for reliable repair of cycle slip for triple-frequency observations, the critical ratio value between the second-best and best cycle-slip candidates for different residual ionosphere accuracies and different repair success rates are given based on large amounts of simulated data. Lastly, a set of active ionosphere and low-sampling-rate real data was used for evaluation and analysis of the algorithm. Results showed the success rate of cycle-slip repair is 99.997%, even under active ionosphere conditions, with low satellite elevation and low sampling rate. Unfortunately, one cycle-slip group (1, 1, 1) of the C14 satellite was not detected successfully and repaired correctly because of insensitivity to the GF phase combination under bad observation conditions.

Both extrinsic and intrinsic tissues contribute to tendon repair, but the origin and molecular functions of extrinsic tissues in tendon repair are not fully understood. Here we show that tendon sheath cells harbor stem/progenitor cell properties and contribute to tendon repair by activating Hedgehog signaling. We found that Osteocalcin (Bglap) can be used as an adult tendon-sheath-specific marker in mice. Lineage tracing experiments show that Bglap-expressing cells in adult sheath tissues possess clonogenic and multipotent properties comparable to those of stem/progenitor cells isolated from tendon fibers. Transplantation of sheath tissues improves tendon repair. Mechanistically, Hh signaling in sheath tissues is necessary and sufficient to promote the proliferation of Mkx-expressing cells in sheath tissues, and its action is mediated through TGFβ/Smad3 signaling. Furthermore, co-localization of GLI1+ and MKX+ cells is also found in human tendinopathy specimens. Our work reveals the molecular function of Hh signaling in extrinsic sheath tissues for tendon repair.

This paper analyzes the convergence time and the root mean square (RMS) error of single frequency (SF) precise point positioning (PPP) in the ionospheric-constrained (TIC1) and troposphere- and ionospheric-constrained (TIC2) conditions, when the stations are at a low latitude, mid-latitude, and high latitude area during the period of a magnetic storm (MS) and a non-magnetic storm (NMS). In this paper, 375 IGS (international global navigation satellite system (GNSS) service) stations were selected from all over the world for 30 days in September 2017. The 24 hour daily observations were split for each station into 8 data sets of 3 hours each, so that a total of 90,000 tests were carried out. After statistical analysis, it was concluded that: during the MS period, the percentage of TIC2 shortened compared to the TIC1 convergence time, and it was by at least 3.9%, 3.0%, and 9.3% when the station was at global, low latitude, and high latitude areas, respectively. According to the statistical analysis, during the NMS period the convergence time was shortened about at least 12.8%, 11.0%, and 30.0% with respect to the stations in the MS period at global, low, and high latitude areas, respectively. If the station was located in the mid-latitude region, the convergence time was not shortened in some modes. The ionospheric activity in the mid-latitude region was less than that in the low-latitude region, while there were more stations in the mid-latitude region, and the precision of the global ionospheric maps (GIMs) and zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) products were also slightly higher. Overall, TIC1 and TIC2 have a greater impact on convergence time, but have less impact on positioning accuracy, and only have a greater impact in different environments during the MS and NMS periods.

Arterial baroreceptors are mechanical sensors that detect blood pressure changes. It has long been suggested that the two arterial baroreceptors, aortic and carotid baroreceptors, have different pressure sensitivities. However, there is no consensus as to which of the arterial baroreceptors are more sensitive to changes in blood pressure. In the present study, we employed independent methods to compare the pressure sensitivity of the two arterial baroreceptors. Firstly, pressure-activated action potential firing was measured by whole-cell current clamp with a high-speed pressure clamp system in primary cultured baroreceptor neurons. The results show that aortic depressor neurons possessed a higher percentage of mechano-sensitive neurons. Furthermore, aortic baroreceptor neurons show a lower pressure threshold than that of carotid baroreceptor neurons. Secondly, uniaxial stretching of baroreceptor neurons, that mimics the forces exerted on blood vessels, elicited a larger increase in intracellular Ca2+ rise in aortic baroreceptor neurons than in carotid baroreceptor neurons. Thirdly, the pressure-induced action potential firing in the aortic depressor nerve recorded in vivo was also higher. The present study therefore provides for a basic physiological understanding on the pressure sensitivity of the two baroreceptor neurons and suggests that aortic baroreceptors have a higher pressure sensitivity than carotid baroreceptors.
