Abstract Background Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is a potential pathogen usually detected in patients with gastrointestinal diseases. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a metabolic byproduct of SRB, was considered the main causative agent that disrupted the morphology and function of gut epithelial cells. Associated study also showed that flagellin from Desulfovibrio vulgaris (DVF), the representative bacterium of the Desulfovibrio genus, could exacerbate colitis due to the interaction of DVF and LRRC19, leading to the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. However, we still have limited understanding about the change of gut microbiota (GM) composition caused by overgrowth of SRB and its exacerbating effects on colitis. Results In this study, we transplanted D. vulgaris into the mice treated with or without DSS, and set a one-week recovery period to investigate the impact of D. vulgaris on the mice model. The outcomes showed that transplanted D. vulgaris into the normal mice could cause the gut inflammation, disrupt gut barrier and reduce the level of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Moreover, D. vulgaris also significantly augmented DSS-induced colitis by exacerbating the damage of gut barrier and the secretion of inflammatory cytokines, for instance, IL-1β, iNOS, and TNF-α. Furthermore, results also showed that D. vulgaris could markedly change GM composition, especially decrease the relative abundance of SCFAs-producing bacteria. Additionally, D. vulgaris significantly stimulated the growth of Akkermansia muciniphila probably via its metabolic byproduct, H2S, in vivo. Conclusions Collectively, this study indicated that transplantation of D. vulgaris could cause gut inflammation and aggravate the colitis induced by DSS.

The probiotic bacterium Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) holds significant promise for use in clinical and biological industries. However, the reliance on antibiotics to maintain plasmid-borne genes has overshadowed its benefits. In this study, we addressed this issue by engineering the endogenous cryptic plasmids pMUT1 and pMUT2. The non-essential elements were removed to create more stable derivatives pMUT1NR△ and pMUT2HBC△. Synthetic promoters by integrating binding motifs on sigma factors were further constructed and applied for expression of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron heparinase III and the biosynthesis of ectoine. Compared to traditional antibiotic-dependent expression systems, our newly constructed antibiotic-free expression systems offer considerable advantages for clinical and synthetic biology applications.

Abstract In the current prevalent complex electromagnetic (EM) environment, intelligent methods for versatile and integrated control of EM waves using compact devices are both essential and challenging. These varied wave control objectives can at times conflict with one another, such as the need for broad absorption to remain inconspicuous, while also requiring enhanced backward scattering for highly reliable tracing and secure communication. To address these sophisticated challenges, a microwave‐frequency reconfigurable tri‐mode metasurface (RTMM) is introduced. The proposed innovation enables three distinct operational modes: broadband low observation, enhanced EM wave tracing, and backscatter communication over a wide‐angle range by simple control of the PIN diodes embedded in each meta‐atom. The proof‐of‐concept demonstration of the fabricated prototype verified the switchable tri‐mode performance of the RTMM. This proposed RTMM can be adapted to various applications, including EM shielding, target detection, and secure communication in complex and threatening EM environments, paving the way for environmentally‐adaptive EM wave manipulation.

Abstract With technological advancements, radiotherapy (RT) has become an effective non-surgical treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), comprehensively improving the local control rate of patients with HCC. However, some patients with HCC still experience radio-resistance, cancer recurrence, and distant metastasis following RT. Our previous study has revealed that hexokinase 2 (HK2), a potent oncogene, was overexpressed in radio-resistant HCC cell lines; however, its role in HCC radio-resistance remains elusive. Here, we confirmed the upregulation of HK2 in HCC tissue, which is related to unfavorable prognosis in patients with HCC, and demonstrated that HK2 exerts a radio-resistant role by attenuating apoptosis and promoting proliferation in HCC cell lines. HK2 downregulation combined with ionizing radiation showed an excellent synergistic lethal effect. Mechanistically, HK2 alleviated ionizing radiation-mediated apoptosis by complexing with pro-apoptotic protein aminoacyl tRNA synthetase complex interacting multifunctional protein 2 (AIMP2) while enhancing its autophagic lysosomal-dependent degradation, thereby increasing radio-resistance of HCC. Pharmacologically, ketoconazole, an FDA-approved antifungal drug, served as an inhibitor of HK2 and synergistically enhanced the efficacy of RT. Our results indicated that HK2 played a vital role in radio-resistance and could be a potential therapeutic target for improving RT efficacy in HCC.

The wheat scab caused by Fusarium graminearum (F. graminearum) has seriously affected the yield and quality of wheat in China. In this study, gallic acid (GA), a natural polyphenol, was used to synthesize three azole-modified gallic acid derivatives (AGAs1–3). The antifungal activity of GA and its derivatives against F. graminearum was studied through mycelial growth rate experiments and field efficacy experiments. The results of the mycelial growth rate test showed that the EC50 of AGAs–2 was 0.49 mg/mL, and that of AGAs–3 was 0.42 mg/mL. The biological activity of AGAs–3 on F. graminearum is significantly better than that of GA. The results of field efficacy tests showed that AGAs–2 and AGAs–3 significantly reduced the incidence rate and disease index of wheat scab, and the control effect reached 68.86% and 72.11%, respectively. In addition, preliminary investigation was performed on the possible interaction between AGAs–3 and F. graminearum using density functional theory (DFT). These results indicate that compound AGAs–3, because of its characteristic of imidazolium salts, has potential for use as a green and environmentally friendly plant-derived antifungal agent for plant pathogenic fungi.

Ongoing extensive research in the field of gut microbiota (GM) has highlighted the crucial role of gut-dwelling microbes in human health. These microbes possess 100 times more genes than the human genome and offer significant biochemical advantages to the host in nutrient and drug absorption, metabolism, and excretion. It is increasingly clear that GM modulates the efficacy and toxicity of drugs, especially those taken orally. In addition, intra-individual variability of GM has been shown to contribute to drug response biases for certain therapeutics. For instance, the efficacy of cyclophosphamide depends on the presence of Enterococcus hirae and Barnesiella intestinihominis in the host intestine. Conversely, the presence of inappropriate or unwanted gut bacteria can inactivate a drug. For example, dehydroxylase of Enterococcus faecalis and Eggerthella lenta A2 can metabolize L-dopa before it converts into the active form (dopamine) and crosses the blood–brain barrier to treat Parkinson’s disease patients. Moreover, GM is emerging as a new player in personalized medicine, and various methods are being developed to treat diseases by remodeling patients’ GM composition, such as prebiotic and probiotic interventions, microbiota transplants, and the introduction of synthetic GM. This review aims to highlight how the host’s GM can improve drug efficacy and discuss how an unwanted bug can cause the inactivation of medicine.

Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI) are caused by respiratory pathogens and range from asymptomatic infections to severe respiratory diseases. These diseases can be life threatening with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Under the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), little has been reported about the pathogen etiologies and epidemiology of patients suffering from ARTI of all age in Xiamen. Region-specific surveillance in individuals with ARTI of all ages was performed in Xiamen from January 2020 to October 2022. Here, we observed the epidemiological characteristics of thirteen pathogens within ARTI patients and further revealed the difference of that between upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) and lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). In total 56.36 % (2358/4184) of the ARTI patients were positive for at least one respiratory pathogen. Rhinovirus (RVs, 29.22 %), influenza A (FluA, 19.59 %), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV, 18.36 %), metapneumovirus (MPV, 13.91 %), and adenovirus (ADV, 10.31 %) were the five leading respiratory pathogens. Respiratory pathogens displayed age- and season-specific patterns, even between URTI and LRTI. Compared with other groups, a higher proportion of FluA (52.17 % and 68.75 %, respectively) infection was found in the adult group and the elder group, while the lower proportion of RVs (14.11 % and 11.11 %) infection was also observed in them. Although ARTI cases circulated throughout the year, RVs, FluB, and BoV peaked in autumn, and FluA circulated more in summer. Besides, the co-infectious rate was 8.7 % with the most common for RVs. Logistic regression analyses revealed the correlations between respiratory pathogens and disease types. These results are essential for replenishing epidemiological characteristics of common respiratory pathogens that caused ARTI in Xiamen during the epidemic of COVID-19, and a better understanding of it might optimize the local prevention and clinical control.

Abstract Background Radiotherapy (RT) is one of the major therapeutic approaches to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Ionizing radiation (IR) inducing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leads to a promising antitumor effect. However, the dysregulation of the redox system often causes radioresistance and impairs the efficacy of RT. Increasing evidence indicates that nuclear protein 1 (NUPR1) plays a critical role in redox reactions. In this study, we aim to explore the role of NUPR1 in maintaining ROS homeostasis and radioresistance in HCC. Methods The radioresistant role of NUPR1 was determined by colony formation assay, comet assay in vitro, and xenograft tumor models in vivo. Probes for ROS, apoptosis assay, and lipid peroxidation assay were used to investigate the functional effect of NUPR1 on ROS homeostasis and oxidative stress. RNA sequencing and co-immunoprecipitation assay were performed to clarify the mechanism of NUPR1 inhibiting the AhR/CYP signal axis. Finally, we analyzed clinical specimens to assess the predictive value of NUPR1 and AhR in the radiotherapeutic efficacy of HCC. Results We demonstrated that NUPR1 was upregulated in HCC tissues and verified that NUPR1 increased the radioresistance of HCC in vitro and in vivo. NUPR1 alleviated the generation of ROS and suppressed oxidative stress, including apoptosis and lipid peroxidation by downregulating cytochrome P450 (CYP) upon IR. ROS scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) and CYP inhibitor alizarin restored the viability of NUPR1-knockdown cells during IR. Mechanistically, the interaction between NUPR1 and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) promoted the degradation and decreased nuclear translation of AhR via the autophagy-lysosome pathway, followed by being incapable of CYP’s transcription. Furthermore, genetically and pharmacologically activating AhR abrogated the radioresistant role of NUPR1. Clinical data suggested that NUPR1 and AhR could serve as novel biomarkers for predicting the radiation response of HCC. Conclusions Our findings revealed the role of NUPR1 in regulating ROS homeostasis and oxidative stress via the AhR/CYP signal axis upon IR. Strategies targeting the NUPR1/AhR/CYP pathway may have important clinical applications for improving the radiotherapeutic efficacy of HCC.

Abstract Nuclear protein 1 (NUPR1) is a transcriptional coregulator that has been implicated in the development of various cancer types. In addition, de novo fatty acid synthesis plays a pivotal role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. However, little is currently known on the role of NUPR1 in hepatocellular carcinoma. In this study, bioinformatics analysis was conducted to analyze the expression level, prognosis value and enriched pathways of NUPR1 in Liver Hepatocellular Carcinoma (LIHC). We found that NUPR1 was significantly upregulated in human hepatocellular carcinoma cells compared with normal hepatocytes from LIHC patients in TCGA cohorts and our patients. Kaplan–Meier analysis and COX proportional hazard progression model showed that high expression of NUPR1 was correlated with a poor prognosis of LIHC patients. CCK-8, EdU and colony formation assays were performed to explore the effect of NUPR1 on the proliferation of HCC cells, then wound healing and transwell migration assays were performed to evaluate the effects of NUPR1 on cell migration. Furthermore, subcutaneous xenograft models were established to study tumor growth. Results showed that NUPR1 overexpression correlated with a highly proliferative and aggressive phenotype. In addition, NUPR1 knockdown significantly inhibited hepatocellular carcinoma cell proliferation and migration in vitro and hindered tumorigenesis in vivo. Mechanistically, endogenous NUPR1 could interact with sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 (SREBP1) and upregulated lipogenic gene expression of fatty acid synthase (FASN), resulting in the accumulation of lipid content. Moreover, pharmacological or genetic blockade of the NUPR1-SREBP1/FASN pathway enhanced anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo. Overall, we identified a novel function of NUPR1 in regulating hepatocellular carcinoma progression via modulation of SREBP1-mediated de novo lipogenesis. Targeting NUPR1-SREBP1/FASN pathway may be a therapeutic alternative for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Background As a principal cause of mortality and disability worldwide, stroke imposes considerable burdens on society and effects on the lives of patients, families, and communities. Owing to their growing global popularity, health-related applications (apps) offer a promising approach to stroke management but show a knowledge gap regarding mobile apps for stroke survivors. Methods This review was conducted across the Android and iOS app stores in September–December 2022 to identify and describe all apps targeting stroke survivors. Apps were included if they were designed for stroke management and contained at least one of the following components: medication taking, risk management, blood pressure management, and stroke rehabilitation. Apps were excluded if they were unrelated to health, not in Chinese or English, or the targeted users were healthcare professionals. The included apps were downloaded, and their functionalities were investigated. Results The initial search yielded 402 apps, with 115 eligible after title and description screening. Some apps were later excluded due to duplicates, registration problems, or installation failures. In total, 83 apps were included for full review and evaluated by three independent reviewers. Educational information was the most common function (36.1%), followed by rehabilitation guidance (34.9%), communication with healthcare providers (HCPs), and others (28.9%). The majority of these apps (50.6%) had only one functionality. A minority had contributions from an HCP or patients. Conclusion With the widespread accessibility and availability of smartphone apps across the mHealth landscape, an increasing number of apps targeting stroke survivors are being released. One of the most important findings is that the majority of the apps were not specifically geared toward older adults. Many of the currently available apps lack healthcare professionals’ and patients’ involvement in their development, and most offer limited functionality, thus requiring further attention to the development of customized apps.

Introduction: Trade networks of crude oil are susceptible to cascade of initial shocks that increase systemic trade risks and threaten energy security. This study introduces a novel method of modelling systemic trade risk of crude oil which is combined with a sentiment proxy from a network perspective.Method: We construct sentiment instability to evaluate the uncertainty of crude oil trade in a country and use the PageRank algorithm to measure supplier diversity from a network perspective instead of direct trade partners.Result: At the global level, we show that the distribution of systemic oil trade risk has an obvious heterogeneity and a significant negative correlation between systemic trade risk of crude oil and trade volume volatility. At the regional level, we compare the systemic trade risk of crude oil between China and America and systemic trade risks show strongly significant correlations with the price volatility in both China and America. Furthermore, the structure of trade network can effectively reduce the systemic risk in America while it increases the systemic trade risk in China.Discussion: Our results can give a reason for an irrational practice of Chinese crude oil imports which are “buying when the price is rising and not buying when the price is declining”.

Abstract Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has been widely used in food and supplemental products. In the last 20 years, extensive research has been conducted to investigate the medicinal prospects of jiaogulan, and in this regard, more than 200 compounds have been isolated with various medicinal properties such as anticancer, anti‐obesity, anti‐inflammation, and antioxidation. In respect of potential benefits, jiaogulan market is likely growing, and various food items comprised of jiaogulan (beverage, sport drinks, cola, beer, tea, bread, and noodles) have been commercialized in the United States of America, China, and other Asian countries. More recently, there has been growing interest in the prebiotic potential of jiaogulan, especially at the interface of the gut microbiota. This review focuses on the prebiotic and therapeutic aspects of saponins and polysaccharides of jiaogulan tea by summarizing the literature on cancer, obesity, antioxidant activity, and immune‐modulatory properties.

Abstract Since the discovery of wireless telegraphy in 1897, wireless communication via electromagnetic (EM) signals has become a standard solution to address increasing demand for information transfer in modern society. With the rapid growth of EM wave manipulation technique, programmable metasurface (PM) has emerged as a new type of wireless transmitter by directly modulating digital information without complex microwave components, thus providing an alternative to simplify the conventional wireless communication system. However, the challenges of improving information security and spectrum utilization still exist. Here, a dual‐band metasurface‐assisted wireless communication scheme is introduced to provide additional physical channels for the enhancement of information security. The information is divided into several parts and transmitted through different physical channels to accomplish information encryption, greatly reducing the possibility of eavesdropping. As the proof of concept, a dual‐channel and high‐security wireless communication system based on a 1‐bit PM is established to simultaneously transmit two different parts of a picture to two receivers. Experiments show that the transmitted picture can be successfully retrieved only if the received signals of different receivers are synthetized as predefined. The proposed scheme provides a new route of employing PM in information encryption and spectrum utilization of wireless communication.

Many sensitizers have not only photodynamic effects, but also sonodynamic effects. Therefore, the combination of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) using sensitizers for sono-photodynamic therapy (SPDT) provides alternative opportunities for clinical cancer therapy. Although significant advances have been made in synthesizing new sensitizers for SPDT, few of them are successfully applied in clinical settings. The anti-tumor effects of the sensitizers are restricted by the lack of tumor-targeting specificity, incapability in deep intratumoral delivery, and the deteriorating tumor microenvironment. The application of nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems (NDDSs) can solve the above shortcomings, thereby improving the SPDT efficacy. This review summarizes various sensitizers as sono/photosensitizers that can be further used in SPDT, and describes different strategies for enhancing tumor treatment by NDDSs, such as overcoming biological barriers, improving tumor-targeted delivery and intratumoral delivery, providing stimuli-responsive controlled-release characteristics, stimulating anti-tumor immunity, increasing oxygen supply, employing different therapeutic modalities, and combining diagnosis and treatment. The challenges and prospects for further development of intelligent sensitizers and translational NDDSs for SPDT are also discussed.

We propose a general scheme to manipulate fundamental and harmonic frequencies simultaneously in a nonlinear fashion based on time-varying polarization-converting programmable metasurface. Co-polarization and cross-polarization reflection can be switched dynamically at an operating frequency of 2.4 GHz by loading metasurface with PIN (p-i-n) diodes. As a result, by adjusting a duty cycle and frequency of square-wave-type time-varying signals used for time-varying modulation, energy distribution and frequency shift in the frequency domain can be manipulated. To verify this, we fabricated a sample and conducted experiments, and the results agreed well with the theoretical prediction, confirming the design principle. Furthermore, we propose a wireless communication system based on binary amplitude-shift keying as an example of its practical application. The proposed one eliminates the need for complex device components on the emitter because the information is directly modulated onto the metasurface, greatly simplifying the traditional system. The proposed system can achieve a maximum transmission data rate of up to 625 kbps in experiments. The proposed metasurface paves a new way for time-varying manipulation of microwave and can have potential in real-world applications, such as next-generation communication and high-resolution imaging.

The East China Sea (ECS) is featured by the broad continental shelf, huge terrigenous sediment input and striking river-sea interaction during the Quaternary. Despite the numerous studies, mostly on the delta, coastal and inner shelf areas, the late Quaternary stratigraphy and sedimentary environment on the mid-outer ECS shelf were poorly documented. In particular, it is still controversial in issues such as the recognition of marine transgression deposits in the interglacial period and the occurrence and ages of deposits in the glacial period. This study presents new data of high-resolution seismic reflection profiles and collective evidences from lithology, microfossil assemblages and geochronology of borehole SFK-1 on the ECS outer shelf, aiming to revisit the sedimentary stratigraphic evolution and environmental changes since the Marine Isotopic Stage 5 (MIS 5). Sixty-one ages were obtained by radiocarbon and Optical Stimulation Luminescence (OSL), providing robust constraints on the chronostratigraphy. Three marine regression/transgression cycles were identified, which primarily constrained the sedimentary environmental evolution over the past 100 kyrs. Although the strong river-sea interaction accompanied with sea level fluctuations characterized the late Quaternary depositional environment on the shelf, this study clearly identified the stratigraphic boundaries between MIS 1 and MIS 5, and confirmed the tide-influenced fluvial deposition formed during the Last Glacial Maximum on the outer shelf. We infer that tidal forcing significantly superimposed its influence on sea level change and thus formed the most striking feature on the late Quaternary stratigraphy of the open ECS shelf. With the combination of a large number of absolute depositional ages with high-resolution core records, the major findings of this study may allow better understanding of the Quaternary sedimentary evolution and river-sea interaction on open shelves dominated by siliciclastic sedimentation.

Currently, colorectal cancer is still the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality, and the incidence is rising. It is a long time since the researchers used cancer cell lines and animals as the study subject. However, these models possess various limitations to reflect the cancer progression in the human body. Organoids have more clinical significance than cell lines, and they also bridge the gap between animal models and humans. Patient-derived organoids are three-dimensional cultures that simulate the tumor characteristics in vivo and recapitulate tumor cell heterogeneity. Therefore, the emergence of colorectal cancer organoids provides an unprecedented opportunity for colorectal cancer research. It retains the molecular and cellular composition of the original tumor and has a high degree of homology and complexity with patient tissues. Patient-derived colorectal cancer organoids, as personalized tumor organoids, can more accurately simulate colorectal cancer patients’ occurrence, development, metastasis, and predict drug response in colorectal cancer patients. Colorectal cancer organoids show great potential for application, especially preclinical drug screening and prediction of patient response to selected treatment options. Here, we reviewed the application of colorectal cancer organoids in disease model construction, basic biological research, organoid biobank construction, drug screening and personalized medicine, drug development, drug toxicity and safety, and regenerative medicine. In addition, we also displayed the current limitations and challenges of organoids and discussed the future development direction of organoids in combination with other technologies. Finally, we summarized and analyzed the current clinical trial research of organoids, especially the clinical trials of colorectal cancer organoids. We hoped to lay a solid foundation for organoids used in colorectal cancer research.

Abstract Metasurface retroreflectors, which scatter the incident electromagnetic wave back to incoming direction, have received significant attention due to their compelling advantages of low profile and light weight compared with conventional bulky retroreflection devices. However, the current metasurface retroreflectors still have limitations in wide‐angle and omnidirectional operations. This work proposes a high‐efficiency, wide‐angle, reconfigurable, and omnidirectional retroreflector composed of spin‐locked phase gradient metasurface with a thickness of only 5.2 mm or 0.07 operating wavelength. The reflection phase of constituent meta‐atoms can be controlled dynamically and continuously by altering their orientation states through individually addressing each mechanically rotational meta‐atom, whereas the reflection handedness is kept the same as incidence. Therefore, adaptive and arbitrary momentum can be imparted to the incident wave, providing high‐efficiency retroreflection over a wide continuous range from −47° to 47°. Moreover, such high‐performance retroreflection is extended to omnidirectional level, enabling great degrees of freedom that are unavailable by previous researches. As a proof of concept, a retroreflective metasurface is fabricated and experimentally demonstrated at microwave frequencies. The proposed thin thickness, high efficiency, and reconfigurable metasurface retroreflector can be extended to other frequencies that may offer an untapped platform toward reconfigurable spin‐based retroreflection devices for electromagnetic signal processing.

Metallothionein (MT) is a multifunctional inducible protein in animals, plants, and microorganisms. MT is rich in cysteine residues (10−30%), can combine with metal ions, has a low molecular weight, and plays an essential biological role in various stages of the growth and development of organisms. Due to its strong ability to bind metal ions and scavenge free radicals, metallothionein has been used in medicine, health care, and other areas. Zinc is essential for plant growth, but excessive zinc (Zn) is bound to poison plants, and cadmium (Cd) is a significant environmental pollutant. A high concentration of cadmium can significantly affect the growth and development of plants and even lead to plant death. In this study, the human metallothionein gene HsMT1L under the control of the CaMV 35S constitutive promoter was transformed into tobacco, and the tolerance and accumulation capacity of transgenic tobacco plants to Zn and Cd were explored. The results showed that the high-level expression of HsMT1L in tobacco could significantly enhance the accumulation of Zn2+ and Cd2+ in both the aboveground parts and the roots compared to wild-type tobacco plants and conferred a greater tolerance to Zn and Cd in transgenic tobacco. Subcellular localization showed that HsMT1L was localized to the nucleus and cytoplasm in the tobacco. Our study suggests that HsMT1L can be used for the phytoremediation of soil for heavy metal removal.

Phytochelatins (PCs) are class III metallothioneins in plants. They are low molecular-weight polypeptides rich in cysteine residues which can bind to metal ions and affect the physiological metabolism in plants. Unlike other types of metallothioneins, PCs are not the product of gene coding but are synthesized by phytochelatin synthase (PCS) based on glutathione (GSH). The chemical formula of phytochelatin is a mixture of (γ-Glu-Cys)n-Gly (n = 2–11) and is influenced by many factors during synthesis. Phytochelatin-like (PCL) is a gene-encoded peptide (Met-(α-Glu-Cys)11-Gly) designed by our laboratory whose amino acid sequence mimics that of a natural phytochelatin. This study investigated how PCL expression in transgenic plants affects resistance to Cd and Cd accumulation. Under Cd2+ stress, transgenic plants were proven to perform significantly better than the wild-type (WT), regarding morphological traits and antioxidant abilities, but accumulated Cd to higher levels, notably in the roots. Fluorescence microscopy showed that PCL localized in the cytoplasm and nucleus.

Oldenlandia hedyotidea (DC.) Hand.-Mazz (OH), also known as sweet tea, is a valuable functional food with medicinal properties and is used for the treatment of cold, cough, gastroenteritis, heatstroke, herpes zoster, and rheumatoid arthritis. The phytochemicals in plant-based foods are responsible for the occurrence of these diseases to some extent. However, there is a scarcity of information on the chemical components of OH. We, therefore, aimed to investigate the phytochemical components of OH using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS) and UHPLC triple time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Triple-TOF-MS). The main component of the OH extract, asperulosidic acid, was additionally quantified using UHPLC with ultraviolet detection (UHPLC-UV). The anticancer activity of the OH extract was assessed by a cell proliferation assay and a scratch assay using an esophageal cancer cell line. Ten compounds were tentatively identified in the aqueous extract of OH, including five iridoids, two anthraquinones, and one phenolic acid. The content of asperulosidic acid in the aqueous extract of OH was approximately 42 μg ml−1, and the extract exerted definite in vitro anticancer effects. The results can be used for quality control and assessment of the OH extract, which can serve as a promising source of functional ingredients for potential use in the food and drug industries.

Quercetin 3-O-sophoroside (Q3OS) was isolated and identified from Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Linn. (HRS) for the first time. Although Q3OS is common glycosides, its therapeutic potential and mechanism of action against Alzheimer’s disease (AD) have rarely been reported.The results demonstrated that Q3OS treatment effectively ameliorated learning and memory impairment in mice with scopolamine (SCOP)-induced cognitive dysfunction by using the Morris water maze test. Nissl staining results revealed that Q3OS administration blocked neuronal loss in the hippocampal CA1 region. Immunohistochemistry and western blot results also indicated that Q3OS reversed the SCOP-induced decrease in ChAT expression, increase in AChE expression, and decrease in ACh.These findings suggested that Q3OS from HRS could be potentially used to prevent and treat AD, by exerting neuroprotective effects and these effects could be in response to its modification of the cholinergic system function. HRS can be potentially used as a neuroprotective nutrient in the prevention of AD.

The dynamic responses of a linear primary structure coupled with a nonlinear energy sink (NES) are investigated under harmonic excitation in the 1 : 1 resonance regime. In civil engineering, initial conditions are usually zero or approximately zero. Therefore, in this study, only these conditions are considered. The strongly modulated response (SMR), whose occurrence is conditional, is the precondition for effective target energy transfer (TET) in this system. Therefore, this study aims to determine the parameter range in which the SMR can occur. The platform phenomenon and other related phenomena are observed while analyzing slow-varying equations. An excitation amplitude interval during which the SMR can occur is obtained, and an approximate analytical solution of the optimal nonlinear stiffness is found. The numerical results show that the NES based on the optimal stiffness performs better in terms of control performance.

In the present study, we used CaCO3 nanoparticles (CCNPs) as carriers to assess the physicochemical characteristics and antibacterial effect of gentamicin sulfate (GS)-loaded CCNPs (CGPs). The results indicated that CCNPs had relatively regular chain-like structure, and the size of the crystallites was around 62.5 nm. FT-IR analysis indicated that the GS could effectively load onto CCNPs. Meanwhile, the dosage of CCNPs would affect the drug loading and entrapment efficiency of GS. CCNPs could prolong the release of GS, and the complete release of GS from CCNPs was extended up to 24 h. Additionally, CCNPs could obviously increase the antibacterial effect of GS. The zeta potential analysis and microscopic investigations indicated that the adsorbed CCNPs could increase the damage level of bacterial cell wall and enhance the permeability of cell membranes, leading to increased bacterial death.

Nano-Mg(OH)2, with low biological toxicity, is an ideal nano-carrier for insecticidal protein to improve the bioactivity. In this work, the adsorption features of insecticidal protein by nano-Mg(OH)2 have been studied. The adsorption capacity could reach as high as 136 mg g−1, and the adsorption isotherm had been fitted with Langmuir and Freundlich models. Moreover, the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-first or -second order rate model, and the adsorption was spontaneous and an exothermic process. However, high temperatures are not suitable for adsorption, which implies that the temperature would be a critical factor during the adsorption process. In addition, FT-IR confirmed that the protein was adsorbed on the nano-Mg(OH)2, zeta potential analysis suggested that insecticidal protein was loaded onto the nano-Mg(OH)2 not by electrostatic adsorption but maybe by intermolecular forces, and circular dichroism spectroscopy of Cry11Aa protein before and after loading with nano-Mg(OH)2 was changed. The study applied the adsorption information between Cry11Aa and nano-Mg(OH)2, which would be useful in the practical application of nano-Mg(OH)2 as a nano-carrier.
