Abstract Background Prostate cancer (PCa) is highly prevalent among males worldwide. The investigation of exosomes in PCa has emerged as a dynamic and important research area. To visually depict the prominent research areas and evolutionary patterns of exosomes in PCa, we performed a comprehensive analysis via bibliometric methods. Methods Studies were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace, VOSviewers, and the R package “bibliometrix” were employed to analyze the relationships and collaborations among countries/regions, organizations, authors, journals, references, and keywords. Results Over the past 20 years (2003–2022), 995 literatures on exosomes in PCa have been collected. The findings indicate a consistent upward trend in annual publications with the United States being the leading contributor. Cancers is widely recognized as the most prominent journal in this area. In total, 5936 authors have contributed to these publications, with Alicia Llorente being the most prolific. The primary keywords associated with research hotspots include “liquid biopsy”, “identification”, “growth”, “microRNAs”, and “tumor-derived exosomes”. Conclusion Our analysis reveals that investigating the intrinsic mechanisms of exosomes in PCa pathogenesis and exploring the potential of exosomes as biomarkers of PCa constitute the principal focal points in this domain of research.

Abstract Green finance (GF) is recognized as a key driver of sustainable development. While existing studies have extensively discussed the relationship between GF and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), few have explored the coupling coordination relationship between GF and SDGs. In this paper, we use data from thirty Chinese provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions) from 2008–2021 to examine the degree of coupling coordination development (CCD) between GF and the SDGs systems using the CCD model. We find that most SDGs and their sub-goals exhibit a significant upward trend, except for SDG8, 14–16. GF presents a fluctuating upward trend, with a significant decline in 2010 and 2019. The CCDs between GF and SDGs and their sub-goals generally show an M-shaped upward trend in most regions, with most of them experiencing a synchronous decline in 2011–2012 and 2019. In the analysis of regional heterogeneity, the eastern region performs better in SDG8–9, the central region performs better in SDG3, 14–15, while the western region performs better in SDG7. This paper provides empirical evidence for a further in-depth understanding of the relationship between GF and SDGs, which can contribute to advancing GF development and the SDG process.

In situ vaccine (ISV) is a promising immunotherapeutic tactic due to its complete tumoral antigenic repertoire. However, its efficiency is limited by extrinsic inevitable immunosuppression and intrinsic immunogenicity scarcity. To break this plight, a tumor-activated and optically reinforced immunoscaffold (TURN) is exploited to trigger cancer immunoediting phases regression, thus levering potent systemic antitumor immune responses. Upon response to tumoral reactive oxygen species, TURN will first release RGX-104 to attenuate excessive immunosuppressive cells and cytokines, and thus immunosuppression falls and immunogenicity rises. Subsequently, intermittent laser irradiation-activated photothermal agents (PL) trigger abundant tumor antigens exposure, which causes immunogenicity springs and preliminary infiltration of T cells. Finally, CD137 agonists from TURN further promotes the proliferation, function, and survival of T cells for durable antitumor effects. Therefore, cancer immunoediting phases reverse and systemic antitumor immune responses occur. TURN achieves over 90 % tumor growth inhibition in both primary and secondary tumor lesions, induces potent systemic immune responses, and triggers superior long-term immune memory in vivo. Taken together, TURN provides a prospective sight for ISV from the perspective of immunoediting phases.

Abstract Accelerating efforts for the Sustainable Development Goals requires understanding their synergies and trade-offs at the national and sub-national levels, which will help identify the key hurdles and opportunities to prioritize them in an indivisible manner for a country. Here, we present the importance of the 17 goals through synergy and trade-off networks. Our results reveal that 19 provinces show the highest trade-offs in SDG13 (Combating Climate Change) or SDG5 (Gender Equality) consistent with the national level, with other 12 provinces varying. 24 provinces show the highest synergies in SDG1 (No Poverty) or SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) consistent with the national level, with the remaining 7 provinces varying. These common but differentiated SDG priorities reflect that to ensure a coordinated national response, China should pay more attention to the provincial situation, so that provincial governments can formulate more targeted policies in line with their own priorities towards accelerating sustainable development.

Abstract Geophysical inversion usually involves ill-posed problem. Regularization is the most commonly used method to mitigate this problem. There are many regularization parameter selection methods, among which the adaptive regularization method can automatically update parameters during iteration, reducing the difficulty of parameter selection. Therefore, it is widely used in linear inversion. However, there are very few studies on the use of adaptive regularization methods in stochastic optimization algorithms. The biggest difficulty is that in stochastic optimization algorithms, the search direction of any iteration is completely random. Data fitting term and stabilizing term vary in a wide range, making it difficult for traditional methods to work. In this paper, we consider the contributions of the data fitting term and the stabilizing term in the objective function and give an improved adaptive regularization method for very fast simulated annealing (VFSA) inversion for transient electromagnetic (TEM) data. The optimized method adjusts the two terms dynamically to make them in balance. We have designed several numerical experiments, and the experimental results demonstrate that the method in this paper not only accelerates the convergence, but also the inversion results are very little affected by the initial regularization parameter. Finally, we apply this method to field data, and the inversion results show very good agreements with nearby borehole data.

Abstract Large‐scale photovoltaic (PV) plants are growing rapidly in drylands because of the rich solar radiation and vast unutilized land. The transformation of landscapes in dryland has threatened local fragile vegetation. Existing studies have investigated the issue by field observations and satellite data, yet the spatial differences in vegetation changes due to dryland PV plants deployment and underlying driving mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, Landsat Normalized Difference Vegetation Index data were used to assess the vegetation changes disturbed by PV plants in China's drylands. We further identified environmental factors affecting vegetation changes based on random forest regression model. Our findings reveal the spatial heterogeneity in the impact of PV plants on vegetation dynamics—PV plant deployment promoted the growth of vegetation in the vast majority of arid and hyper‐arid drylands, while it tends to cause vegetation decline in the sub‐humid and semi‐arid drylands. The impact of PV plants on vegetation dynamics depends on local environmental conditions. We found that deploying PV plants in areas with sparse vegetation, low humidity, and long sunshine duration is more likely to promote vegetation restoration. The findings and data maps with highly detailed information can help guide solar energy operators in siting and ecological restoration to enhance techno–ecological synergies in the future.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a highly morbid complication in patients with diabetes mellitus, necessitating the development of innovative pharmaceuticals to address unmet medical needs. Sodium ion (Na+) is a well-established mediator for membrane potential and osmotic equilibrium. Recently, Na+ transporters have been identified as a functional regulator of regeneration. However, the role of Na+ in the intricate healing process of mammalian wounds remains elusive. Here, we found that the skin wounds in hyponatremic mice display a hard-to-heal phenotype. Na+ ionophores that were employed to increase intracellular Na+ content could facilitate keratinocyte proliferation and migration, and promote angiogenesis, exhibiting diverse biological activities. Among of them, monensin A emerges as a promising agent for accelerating the healing dynamics of skin wounds in diabetes. Mechanistically, the elevated mitochondrial Na+ decelerates inner mitochondrial membrane fluidity, instigating the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is identified as a critical effector on the monensin A-induced improvement of wound healing. Concurrently, Na+ ionophores replenish H+ to the mitochondrial matrix, causing an enhancement of mitochondrial energy metabolism to support productive wound healing programs. Our study unfolds a new role of Na+, which is a pivotal determinant in wound healing. Furthermore, it directs a roadmap for developing Na+ ionophores as innovative pharmaceuticals for treating chronic dermal wounds in diabetic patients.

CO2 emissions have posed numerous global challenges, leading to an increasing consensus on the need for carbon neutrality in future development. CO2 capture and energy storage technologies represent a critical step in the carbon neutrality journey. Calcium looping (CaL), a promising technology for both CO2 capture and energy storage, holds significant potential in future carbon neutral technology strategies. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the application of CaL in CO2 capture and thermochemical heat storage (TCHS) is offered to inform further advancements in this field. Firstly, a brief overview and analysis of the fundamental technical routes and principles underlying of CaL for CO2 capture and TCHS are provided. Then, the research progress in the development of CaL-integrated systems for CO2 capture and TCHS is subsequently reviewed, with the existing limitations and outlining future prospects for further development highlighted. Additionally, a comprehensive summary of the proposed improvements in the performance of calcium-based materials is presented, focusing on enhancing carbonation reactivity in the multiple cycles and improving sunlight absorption performance of calcium-based materials. Finally, based on the current status of CaL development, insights and perspectives on potential avenues for further technological advancement are offered. Solar-driven CaL is a promising avenue for future CaL development, calling for greater research efforts on optimizing relevant equipment and enhancing calcium-based materials for sunlight-driven CaL systems. In addition, the CO2 in-situ conversion in the calcination stage of CaL is also a great potential direction for technological evolution.

A self-consistent and precise method to determine the time-dependent radiative albedo, i.e., the ratio of the reemission flux to the incident flux, for an indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion Hohlraum wall material is proposed. A specially designed symmetrical triple-cavity gold Hohlraum is used to create approximately constant and near-equilibrium uniform radiation with a peak temperature of 160 eV. The incident flux at the secondary cavity waist is obtained from flux balance analysis and from the shock velocity of a standard sample. The results agree well owing to the symmetrical radiation in the secondary cavity. A self-consistent and precise time-dependent radiative albedo is deduced from the reliable reemission flux and the incident flux, and the result from the shock velocity is found to have a smaller uncertainty than that from the multi-angle flux balance analysis, and also to agree well with the result of a simulation using the HYADES opacity.

Ammonia oxidation is the rate-limiting step in nitrification and the key step in the nitrogen (N) cycle. Most soil nutrients and biological indicators are extremely sensitive to irrigation systems, from the perspective of improving soil fertility and soil ecological environment, the evaluation of different irrigation systems and suitability of selection, promote crop production and soil quality, study the influence of the soil microenvironment contribute to accurate evaluation of irrigation farmland soil health. Based on the amoA gene, the abundance and community diversity of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and their responses to soil physicochemical factors and enzyme activities were studied in semi-arid areas of Northeast China. The study consisted of three irrigation systems: flood irrigation (FP), shallow buried drip irrigation (DI), and mulched drip irrigation (MF). The results showed that DI and MF significantly increased the contents of alkaline hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN), nitrate nitrogen (NO3–-N), soil moisture, and the activities of ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) and hydroxylamine oxidase (HAO). Compared with FP, DI significantly increased the abundance of soil AOA and AOB, while MF significantly increased the abundance of soil AOB. Irrigation systems significantly affected the community composition of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM). Also, AN and soil moisture had the greatest influence on the community composition of AOA and AOB, respectively. The AOB community had better stability and stress resistance. Moreover, the symbiotic network of AOB in the three irrigation systems was more complex than that of AOA. Compared with FP, the AOA community under treatment DI had higher complexity and stability, maintaining the versatility and sustainability of the ecosystem, while the AOB community under treatment MF had higher transfer efficiency in terms of matter and energy. In conclusion, DI and MF were more conducive to the propagation of soil AOM in the semi-arid area of Northeast China, which can provide a scientific basis for rational irrigation and N regulation from the perspective of microbiology.

Abstract Sedimentary carbonates are known to be carried into the deep mantle by subducted slabs, and studies on mantle‐derived magmas have attempted to trace the recycled carbonate in their mantle source. However, the final depth of storage of recycled carbonate and the role of recycled carbonate in the partial melting of mantle remain controversial. Peralkaline‐carbonatite suites are considered to have been derived from a carbonated mantle source and are windows to evaluate carbon in the mantle. In this study, we report the Zn isotopic compositions of a peralkaline‐carbonatite suite from the Tarim Large Igneous Province (Tarim LIP). The peralkaline‐carbonatite suite has heavier δ66Zn than normal mantle with δ66Zn of 0.34–0.40 ‰ for nephelinite, 0.35–0.47 ‰ for aillikite, 0.51–0.55 ‰ for nepheline syenite, 0.58–0.67 ‰ for calciocarbonatite and 0.38–0.56 ‰ for magnesiocarbonatite. The heavy Zn isotopic compositions of the peralkaline‐carbonatite suite in the Wajilitag complex suggest the incorporation of recycled carbonate‐bearing materials into the deep mantle. We infer that the calciocarbonatite was produced by the initial partial melting of subducted MgSiO3/MgO + C‐bearing carbonated eclogite, whereas the magnesiocarbonatite, aillikite, and nephelinite are considered as reacted melts between carbonated eclogite‐derived melts and peridotite. The heavy Zn isotopic compositions of the nepheline syenite are attributed to fractional crystallization from nephelinite magma in the magma reservoir. Our study highlights the incorporation of carbonated eclogite as an important agent of recycled carbon in the deep mantle and interactions between carbonated eclogite‐derived melts and peridotite lead to the complex lithological heterogeneities in the peralkaline‐carbonatite suite in Tarim LIP.

Abstract Rapid growth in nanoparticles (NPs) as delivery systems holds vast promise to promote therapeutic approaches for cancer treatment. Presently, a diverse array of NPs with unique properties have been developed to overcome different challenges and to achieve sophisticated delivery routes for enhancement of a series of therapies. Inspiring advances have been achieved in the field of cancer therapy using NPs. In this review, we aim to summarize the up‐to‐date progression of NPs for addressing various challenges, and expect to elicit novel and potential opportunities alternatively. We first introduce different sorts of NP technologies, illustrate their mechanisms, and present their applications. Then, the achievements made by NPs to break obstacles in delivering cargoes to specific sites through particular routes are highlighted, including long‐circulation, tumor targeting, responsive release, and subcellular localization. We subsequently retrospect recent research of NPs in different cancer treatments from single therapy, like chemotherapy, to combination therapy, like chemoradiotherapy, and to integrative therapy. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of NPs in cancer therapy, and their potential impact on the field of oncology are discussed. We believe this review can offer a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities of NPs for cancer therapy.

Abstract The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) systems initiate a revolution in genome editing, which have a significant potential for treating cancer. A significant amount of research has been conducted regarding genetic modification using CRISPR/Cas9 systems, and 33 clinical trials using ex vivo or in vivo CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing techniques have been carried out to treat cancer. Despite its potential advantages, the main obstacle to convert CRISPR/Cas9 technology into clinical genome editing applications is the safe and efficient transport of genetic material owing to various extra‐ and intracellular biological hurdles. We outline the characteristics of three forms of CRISPR/Cas9 cargos, plasmids, mRNA/sgRNA, and ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes in this review. The recent in vivo nanotechnology‐based delivery techniques for these three categories to treat cancer are then reviewed. In the end, we outline the prerequisites for effective and secure in vivo CRISPR/Cas9 delivery in clinical contexts and discuss challenges with current nanocarriers. This review offers a thorough overview of the CRISPR/Cas9 nano‐delivery system for the treatment of cancer, serving as a resource for the design and building of CRISPR/Cas9 delivery systems and offering fresh perspectives on the treatment of tumors.

Exosomes play a crucial role in facilitating intercellular communication within organisms. Emerging evidence indicates that a distinct variant of programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1), found on the surface of exosomes, may be responsible for orchestrating systemic immunosuppression that counteracts the efficacy of anti-programmed death-1 (PD-1) checkpoint therapy. Specifically, the presence of PD-L1 on exosomes enables them to selectively target PD-1 on the surface of CD8+ T cells, leading to T cell apoptosis and impeding T cell activation or proliferation. This mechanism allows tumor cells to evade immune pressure during the effector stage. Furthermore, the quantification of exosomal PD-L1 has the potential to serve as an indicator of the dynamic interplay between tumors and immune cells, thereby suggesting the promising utility of exosomes as biomarkers for both cancer diagnosis and PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor therapy. The emergence of exosomal PD-L1 inhibitors as a viable approach for anti-tumor treatment has garnered significant attention. Depleting exosomal PD-L1 may serve as an effective adjunct therapy to mitigate systemic immunosuppression. This review aims to elucidate recent insights into the role of exosomal PD-L1 in the field of immune oncology, emphasizing its potential as a diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic tool in lung cancer.

Multiple cancers have been associated with MYB-related protein B (MYBL2), its involvement in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) has yet to be demonstrated. Our study revealed a significant upregulation of MYBL2 in ccRCC tissues, correlating with clinicopathological features and patient prognosis. Increased MYBL2 expression promoted cell proliferation and suppressed apoptosis. RNA-seq analysis unveiled a reduction in smoothened (SMO) expression upon MYBL2 silencing. However, luciferase and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays demonstrated MYBL2's positive regulation of SMO expression by directly targeting the SMO promoter. Reintroduction of SMO expression in MYBL2-knocked down cells partially restored cell proliferation and mitigated apoptosis inhibition. Overall, these results indicate that MYBL2 facilitates ccRCC progression by enhancing SMO expression, suggesting its potential as an intriguing drug target for ccRCC therapy.

Summary: Wearable devices realize health monitoring, information transmission, etc. In this study, the human-friendliness, adaptability, reliability, and economy (HARE) principle for designing human energy harvesters is first proposed and then a biomechanical energy harvester (BMEH) is proposed to recover the knee negative energy to generate electricity. The proposed BMEH is mounted on the waist of the human body and connected to the ankles by ropes for driving. Double-rotor mechanism and half-wave rectification mechanism design effectively improves energy conversion efficiency with higher power output density for more stable power output. The experimental results demonstrate that the double-rotor mechanism increases the output power of the BMEH by 70% compared to the single magnet-rotor mechanism. And the output power density of BMEH reaches 0.07 W/kg at a speed of 7 km/h. Furthermore, the BMEH demonstrates the excitation mode detection accuracy of 99.8% based on the Gate Recurrent Unit deep learning model with optimal parameters.

Abstract Objectives Innate immunity plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA), which is characterized by synovial inflammation and condylar cartilage degradation. We are urged to investigate the impact of Resatorvid, a preventative drug that inhibits Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), on experimental inflammatory TMJOA pathology. Methods An intra-articular injection of complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) was used to induce an experimental inflammatory mouse TMJOA model, and TLR4 expression was identified by immunofluorescent labeling. Intraperitoneal injections of Resatorvid were administered to CFA-induced TMJOA mice, and the pathology of TMJOA animals with and without Resatorvid treatment was examined by H&E, Safranin-O/Fast Green, and TRAP staining, as well as micro-CT, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence. The impact of Resatorvid on chondrocyte pyroptosis and macrophage inflammation was further investigated using ATDC5 chondrocytes and RAW264.7 macrophages pretreated with relevant antagonists. Results CFA-induced TMJOA mice revealed remarkable synovial inflammation, together with a time course of cartilage degradation and bone destruction, with TLR4 elevated in the synovium and condylar cartilage. Prophylactic treatment with Resatorvid mitigated synovial inflammation, cartilage degeneration, and bone destruction in CFA-induced TMJOA mice and downregulated MyD88/NF-κB expression. Ex vivo studies demonstrated that Resatorvid treatment alleviated NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3)-mediated chondrocyte pyroptosis and degeneration and relieved macrophage inflammation by preventing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production through NLRP3 signaling. Conclusion Prophylactic treatment with Resatorvid alleviates TMJOA pathology by inhibiting chondrocyte pyroptosis and degeneration, as well as ROS-induced macrophage inflammation, through TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB/NLRP3.

Global CO2 concentration rapidly increases over the past few centuries, particularly in recent decades, and the greenhouse effect is sharply accelerated by the increase of CO2 emissions. CO2 emissions are mainly produced from fossil fuel combustion, in particular coal-fired power plants. Calcium looping, i.e. the carbonation/calcination cycles of CaO, is one of the most promising CO2 capture technologies for coal-fired power plant. At the same time, coal-fired power plants are also one of the main sources of NOx emissions. CO can be used as a reducing agent for NO due to its low cost and low toxicity. CaO is a suitable catalyst for NO reduction by CO. The combustion of biomass is used to provide the required energy for the decomposition of CaCO3 in the calciner. Few unburned char and CaO flow into the carbonator, where the unburned char reacts with O2 in the flue gas to generate CO. Thus, the simultaneous NO removal and CO2 capture in the carbonator of the calcium looping process can be realized. However, the reaction mechanism of the effect of CaO on NO removal by CO in the carbonation stage is unclear. The mechanism of NO reduction with CO catalyzed by CaO in the carbonation stage is investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The structural, adsorption, and reaction path parameters, including atomic layout, bond length, adsorption energy, and energy barrier of CO and NO molecules on the CaO (100) surface, are determined. The optimal adsorption sites of CO and NO molecules on the CaO (100) surface are O-top sites, and the adsorption energies are −0.35 and −0.79 eV, respectively. The CO and NO adsorption energies on the CaO (100) surface in the presence of CO2 are −0.36 and −0.20 eV, respectively. The co-adsorption of CO and NO molecules appears feasible on the CaO (100) surface, while CO2 exhibits obvious inhibition for the co-adsorption. The reaction path of NO reduction by CO on the CaO (100) surface undergoes two elementary reaction stages: CO2 formation and adsorption, and N2 generation. Finally, one N2 molecule and three \begin{document}${\rm{CO}}_3^{2-} $\end{document} ions are formed, with a total energy barrier of 11.08 eV. CO2 formation and adsorption (R→IM1→IM2) are the rate-determining steps of the whole reaction process.

Abstract Recent concurrent processes of vegetation greening and reduced resilience (the capacity to recover from disturbances) worldwide have brought many uncertainties into sustainable ecosystems in the future. However, little is known about the conditions and extent to which greening affects resilience changes. Here we assess both vegetation dynamics and resilience in China’s Loess Plateau from 2000 to 2020 using satellite-based vegetation data and an early warning indicator. Our results reveal an overall greening trend in vegetated areas, while resilience shifted from gains to losses at a breakpoint in 2010. Vegetation greening generally contributed to resilience gains, whereas increased temperature and precipitation variability contributed to the resilience loss observed in 2011–2020. These findings provide empirical evidence that vegetation greening does not necessarily correspond to an increase in resilience. We therefore recommend integrating resilience indicators into ecological restoration and conservation efforts to gain a more comprehensive understanding of vegetation states and support effective ecosystem stewardship.

Abstract Objective Leukodystrophies are a diverse group of rare inherited disorders that affect the white matter of the central nervous system with a wide phenotypic spectrum. We aimed to characterize the clinical and genetic features of leukodystrophies in a central‐southern Chinese cohort. Methods A cohort of 16 Chinese probands with leukodystrophy was recruited and performed genetic analysis by targeted panels or whole‐exome sequencing. Further functional analysis of identified mutations in the colony stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) gene was explored. Results A total of eight pathogenic variants (3 novel, 5 documented) were identified in genes including AARS2, ABCD1, CSF1R, and GALC. Common symptoms of leukodystrophy such as cognitive decline, behavioral symptoms, bradykinesia, and spasticity were observed in mutation carriers as well as other rare features (e.g., seizure, dysarthric, and vision impairment). Overexpressing CSF1R mutants p.M875I and p.F971Sfs*7 in vitro showed pronounced cleavage CSF1R and suppressed protein expression, respectively, and reduced transcripts of both mutants were observed. CSF1 treatment revealed deficient and suppressed CSF1R phospho‐activation with the mutants. In contrast to the plasma membrane and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) localized wild‐type CSF1R, M875I mutant showed much less membrane association and greater detainment in the ER, whereas F971Sfs*7 mutation led to aberrant non‐ER localization. Both mutations caused suppressed cell viability, which was partially resulted from deficient/suppressed CSF1R‐ERK signaling. Interpretation In summary, our findings expand the mutation spectrum of these genes in leukodystrophies. Supported by in vitro validation of the pathogenicity of heterozygous CSF1R mutations, our data also provide insights into the pathogenic mechanisms of CSF1R‐related leukodystrophy.

A dynamic impact test was performed on as-rolled AZ31 alloys with gradient microstructure under various strains. The microstructural evolution and mechanical properties were systematically investigated. As the strain rate gradually increased, an increasing number of twins were formed, facilitating dynamic recrystallization (DRX), and the mechanical properties were also gradually improved. The microstructure became heterogeneous at higher strain rates, but the peak stress decreased. The impact process resulted in a significantly higher performance due to microstructural refinement, work hardening by dislocations, and precipitates. In addition, both the adiabatic shear band and the adjacent crack experienced a temperature rise that exceeded the recrystallization temperature of the alloys. This observation also explains the presence of ultrafine recrystallized grains within the adiabatic shear band and the appearance of molten metal around the crack.

Abstract Terrestrial ecosystems can exhibit various behaviors in response to climate change and human activities. Nonlinear and abrupt shifts in ecosystems are particularly important as they indicate substantial modifications in ecosystem structure and function, posing a threat to the provision of ecosystem services. Here we distinguish between linear, curvilinear, and abrupt shifts in ecosystem productivity from 2000 to 2020 in China's Loess Plateau. We utilize spatial Random Forest models to analyze the driving factors behind these change patterns. Our findings indicate that 84.1% of the ecosystems experienced a positive change in plant productivity, while a small proportion (2.5%) exhibited a negative change. Abrupt shifts are prevalent in both positive and negative changes in ecosystem productivity, with negative changes often manifesting as abrupt shifts (79.3%). Negative changes in plant productivity, particularly the negative abrupt shifts, are primarily associated with human activities characterized by increased nighttime light and urbanization. Land conversion to forest is linked to a curvilinear trajectory in plant productivity, characterized by nonlinear changes with acceleration. Higher water availability and a wetter environment are more likely to promote positive changes in plant productivity. Moderate warming trends contribute to abrupt positive changes in plant productivity, while high warming trends are associated with increased negative abrupt and curvilinear changes. We highlight the importance of accounting for diverse change behaviors in ecosystems for the development of targeted conservation and restoration measures.

As the major component in the cell wall of brown algae, alginates are degradable by alginate lyases via β-elimination. Alginate lyases can be categorized into various polysaccharide lyase (PL) families, and PL7 family alginate lyases are the largest group and can be divided into six subfamilies. However, the major difference among different PL7 subfamilies is not fully understood. In this work, a marine alginate lyase, VaAly2, from Vibrio alginolyticus ATCC 17749 belonging to the PL7_5 subfamily was identified and characterized. It displayed comparatively high alginolytic activities toward different alginate substrates and functions as a bifunctional lyase. Molecular docking and biochemical analysis suggested that VaAly2 not only contains a key catalyzing motif (HQY) conserved in the PL7 family but also exhibits some specific characters limited in the PL7_5 subfamily members, such as the key residues and a long loop1 structure around the active center. Our work provides insight into a loop structure around the center site which plays an important role in the activity and substrate binding of alginate lyases belonging to the PL7_5 subfamily.

ObjectivesEpidemiological studies suggested a potential connection between education and autoimmune disorders. This study investigated the possible cause-and-effect relationship using a Mendelian randomization approach.MethodsWe explored the causality between four education traits (n = 257,841~1,131,881) and 22 autoimmune diseases. The mediating role of smoking (632,802 individuals), BMI (681,275 individuals), alcohol (335,394 individuals), and income (397,751 individuals) was also investigated. Transcriptome-wide association study (TWAS) and enriched signaling pathways analysis were used to investigate the underlying biological mechanisms.ResultsEspecially, higher cognitive performance was protective for psoriasis (odds ratio (OR) = 0.69, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.60-0.79, p = 6.12×10-8), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (OR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.67-0.83, p = 4.62×10-6), and hypothyroidism (OR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.77-0.90, p = 9.82×10-6). Higher levels of educational attainment decreased risks of psoriasis (OR = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.52-0.72, p = 1.12×10-9), RA (OR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.59-0.79, p = 1.56×10-7), and hypothyroidism (OR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.72-0.88, p = 5.00×10-6). The completion of highest-level math class genetically downregulates the incidence of psoriasis (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.58-0.76, p = 2.47×10-9), RA (OR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.63-0.81, p = 5.28×10-8), and hypothyroidism (OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.79-0.92, p = 8.88×10-5). Higher self-reported math ability showed protective effects on Crohn’s disease (CD) (OR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.55-0.81, p = 4.96×10-5), RA (OR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.67-0.87, p = 5.21×10-5), and psoriasis (OR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.65-0.88, p = 4.08×10-4). Protein modification and localization, response to arsenic-containing substances may participate in the genetic association of cognitive performance on UC, RA, psoriasis, and hypothyroidism. According to mediation analyses, BMI, smoking, and income served as significant mediators in the causal connection between educational traits and autoimmune diseases.ConclusionHigher levels of education-related factors have a protective effect on the risk of several autoimmune disorders. Reducing smoking and BMI and promoting income equality can mitigate health risks associated with low education levels.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts paly critical roles in regulating cancer cell biological properties by intricate and dynamic communication networks. But the mechanism of CAFs in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is not clear. In our study, we identified CAFs and malignant cells from the integrated scRNA-seq datasets and establish a CAF-derived communication signature based on the highly activated regulons ETS1 and MEF2C. We stratified the ccRCC TME into two molecular subtypes with distinct prognoses, immune cell infiltration landscapes, and immune-related characteristics. The model derived from signature demonstrated high accuracy and robustness in predicting prognosis and ICIs therapy responses. Subsequently, the SLC38A5 of the model was found upregulated in CAFs and was related to decreased survival probabilities, inflamed TME, and upregulated inhibitory checkpoints. SLC38A5 inhibition could attenuate the pro-tumoral abilities of CAFs in terms of proliferation, migration, and invasion. Mechanically, CCL5 could restore these properties induced by SLC38A5 inhibition. In conclusion, our communication signature and its derived model enabled a more precise selection of ccRCC patients who were potential beneficiaries of ICIs. Besides, the SLC38A5-CCL5 axis may serve as a promising target for ccRCC treatment.

Abstract The social–ecological trap is an emerging concept that describes situations in which self‐reinforcing social and ecological feedbacks maintain or push a social–ecological system towards an undesirable state and threaten the sustainability of human societies. Understanding a system's feedback loops and identifying the leading factors of such traps is essential to develop effective management strategies to warn, avoid and escape traps. To better understand the dynamics of social–ecological traps, we developed a quantitative diagnostic framework that combines the social–ecological network approach and composite system state index. We demonstrated the effectiveness of the framework by examining the rural social–ecological evolution in China's Loess Plateau (LP) from 1949 to 2020, an area once faced with severe social–ecological challenges such as soil erosion, land degradation and poverty. Our analysis identified three stages of trap dynamics in LP: locked in the trap (1949–1981), reacting to the trap (1981–2003) and escaping the trap (2003–2020). In the first stage, LP was locked into an undesirable trajectory where reinforcing feedback occurs between rapid population growth, limited livelihood opportunities, excessive reliance on agriculture and severe soil erosion. Our results also found that the LP has made significant progress in escaping this social–ecological trap during the 21st century through ecological restoration practices and socioeconomic development. Similar social–ecological traps are also observed in many other regions of the world, particularly in developing countries. Our analysis recommends three pathways for addressing social–ecological traps in the LP: (1) promoting urbanization and livelihood diversity, (2) implementing site‐specific engineering measures (e.g. terraces and check dams in the LP) and (3) investing in ecological restoration programs. Escaping the trap is not the end of the story, but could be an early stage of another trap. Policymakers and managers should keep assessing and monitoring the policy practices and outcomes to avoid entering new trap situations. Abstract Some triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients evaluated as Miller-Payne 4 with ypN0 after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) who have better prognoses should avoid escalation of therapy. We aim to identify these patients by evaluating pretherapeutic spatial distributions of immunophenotypes. Our retrospective study in patients with TNBC assessed as Miller-Payne grade 4/5 with ypN0 showed that Miller-Payne 4 with ypN0 group had poorer 5-year disease-free survival (DFS, 63.8% vs. 83.0%, p = 0.003) and the 5-year overall survival (OS, 71.0% vs. 85.5%, p = 0.007) than Miller-Payne 5 with ypN0 group. High TILs were significantly associated with better DFS and OS in patients with Miller-Payne 4 and ypN0 (both p = 0.016). Spatially, detected by multiplexed ion beam imaging by the time of flight combined with proteomics, tumors assessed as Miller-Payne 4 and ypN0 with good prognosis exhibited an inflamed phenotype, with dominant CD8+ T cells on tumor center, few scattered CD68+ myeloid-derived cells far away from T cells, and deposit of increased activated molecules of lymphocyte. While those with poor prognoses presented excluded phenotypes, with few CD8+ T cells restricted to invasive margins and a high density of CD14+CD68+CD11c+ myeloid cells. A good classifier model based on 29 spatial immunophenotypes was established by the random forest algorithm (AUC = 0.975), for identifying patients with Miller-Payne 4 and ypN0 who had favorable prognoses. We also observed similar signatures in patients with Miller-Payne 5 and ypN0. Taken together, spatial immunophenotypes may assess the prognosis in TNBC patients with Miller-Payne 4 and ypN0 after NACT.

Abstract PLAGL2 is upregulated in various tumors, including bladder cancer (BCa). However, the mechanisms underlying the tumorigenic effects of PLAGL2 in BCa remain unclear. In our study, we proved that PLAGL2 was overexpressed in BCa tissues and correlated with decreased survival. Functionally, PLAGL2 deficiency significantly suppressed the proliferation and metastasis of BCa cells in vitro and in vivo. RNA sequencing, qRT‒PCR, immunoblotting, immunofluorescence staining, luciferase reporter, and ChIP assays revealed that overexpressed PLAGL2 disrupted the Hippo pathway and increased YAP1/TAZ activity by transactivating RACGAP1. Further investigations demonstrated that PLAGL2 activated YAP1/TAZ signaling via RACGAP1-mediated RhoA activation. Importantly, the RhoA inhibitor simvastatin or the YAP1/TAZ inhibitor verteporfin abrogated the proproliferative and prometastatic effects of BCa enhanced by PLAGL2. These findings suggest that PLAGL2 promotes BCa progression via RACGAP1/RhoA GTPase/YAP1 signaling. Hence, the core nodes of signaling may be promising therapeutic targets for BCa.

Electroencephalography (EEG)-based emotion recognition is increasingly pivotal in the realm of affective brain–computer interfaces. In this paper, we propose TSANN-TG (temporal–spatial attention neural network with a task-specific graph), a novel neural network architecture tailored for enhancing feature extraction and effectively integrating temporal–spatial features. TSANN-TG comprises three primary components: a node-feature-encoding-and-adjacency-matrices-construction block, a graph-aggregation block, and a graph-feature-fusion-and-classification block. Leveraging the distinct temporal scales of features from EEG signals, TSANN-TG incorporates attention mechanisms for efficient feature extraction. By constructing task-specific adjacency matrices, the graph convolutional network with an attention mechanism captures the dynamic changes in dependency information between EEG channels. Additionally, TSANN-TG emphasizes feature integration at multiple levels, leading to improved performance in emotion-recognition tasks. Our proposed TSANN-TG is applied to both our FTEHD dataset and the publicly available DEAP dataset. Comparative experiments and ablation studies highlight the excellent recognition results achieved. Compared to the baseline algorithms, TSANN-TG demonstrates significant enhancements in accuracy and F1 score on the two benchmark datasets for four types of cognitive tasks. These results underscore the significant potential of the TSANN-TG method to advance EEG-based emotion recognition.

Denitrification is a key process in soil available nitrogen (N) loss. However, the effects of different water-saving irrigation systems on soil N components and denitrifying bacterial communities are still unclear. In this study, quantitative fluorescence PCR and Illumina MiSeq sequencing were used to investigate the effects of three main irrigation systems, conventional flooding irrigation (FP), shallow buried drip irrigation (DI), and mulched drip irrigation (MF), on the abundance, community composition, and diversity of soil nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria in the semi-arid area of Northeast China, and to clarify the driving factors of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacterial community variations. The results showed that, compared with FP, MF significantly increased soil moisture, alkaline hydrolyzed nitrogen (AHN), nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N), non-acid hydrolyzed nitrogen (AIN), and amino sugar nitrogen (ASN), but significantly decreased the contents of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and acid hydrolyzed ammonium nitrogen (AN). The irrigation system changed the relative abundance of the dominant genera of denitrifying bacteria, DI and MF significantly increased nitrate reductase (NR) and nitrite reductase (NiR) activities, and MF significantly increased the diversity of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria but significantly decreased the richness. The community structure of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria was significantly different among the three irrigation systems. NO3−-N was the main driving factor affecting the community structure of nirS-type denitrifying bacteria, and moisture significantly affected the community structure of nirK-type denitrifying bacteria. DI and MF significantly increased the abundance of nirK- and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria and also increased the abundance ratio of nirS/nirK genes. Therefore, although DI and MF significantly increased the abundance of denitrifying microorganisms, they did not lead to an increase in the N2O emission potential.

Abstract Background The relationship between the radiological lymph node (rLN) size and survival outcome in node‐negative rectal cancer is still uncertain. In this study, we aimed to explore the role of enlarged rLN in predicting the survival of node‐negative rectal cancers. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the records of 722 node‐negative rectal cancer who underwent curative resection. Factors associated with DFS (disease‐free survival) and CSS (cancer‐specific survival) were assessed with univariate and multivariate analysis. Survival analysis was performed according to presence with or without enlarged rLN. Combining rLN with NLR as a new index‐inflammation immune score (IIS) for predicting survival. Comparing different models to assess the predictive powers. Results A total of 119 patients had tumor recurrence and 73 patients died due to cancer. Patients with enlarged rLN (≥5 mm) was significantly associated with better DFS (HR:0.517, 95%CI:0.339–0.787, p = 0.002) and CSS (HR:0.43, 95%CI:0.242–0.763, p = 0.004). The risk factors of recurrence were rLN, neutrophil‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR), CEA level, and distance from the anal verge. Complex sustainability issues in the Anthropocene, with rapid globalization and global environmental changes, are increasingly interlinked between not only nearby systems but also distant systems. Tobler’s first law of geography (TFL) states “near things are more related than distant things”. Evidence suggests that TFL is not infallible for sustainability issues. Recently, the integrated framework of metacoupling (MCF; human-nature interactions within as well as between adjacent and distant systems) has been applied to analyze the interactions between nearby and distant coupled human and natural systems simultaneously. However, previous work has been scattered and fragmented. It is crucial to understand the extent to which TFL and MCF apply across pressing issues in sustainability. Therefore, we reviewed and synthesized sustainability literature that used TFL and MCF across seven major topics: land change, species migration, tourism, trade, agricultural development, conservation, and governance. Results indicate MCF had a much broader applicability than TFL for these topics. The literature using MCF generally did not or likely did not obey TFL, especially in trade, governance, and agricultural development. In the TFL literature, most topics obeyed TFL, except for species migration and trade. The findings suggest the need to rethink and further test TFL’s relevance to sustainability issues, and highlight the potential of MCF to address complex interactions between both adjacent and distant systems across the world for global sustainability.

ObjectiveBacterial culture and drug sensitivity testing have been the gold standard for confirming community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) infection in breast abscess with a long history. However, these tests may delay treatment and increase the risk of nosocomial infections. To handle and improve this critical situation, this study aimed to explore biomarkers that could facilitate the rapid diagnosis of CA-MRSA infection.MethodsThis study for the first time applied label-free quantitative proteomics and non-targeted metabonomics to identify potential differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) in breast abscess infected with CA-MRSA compared to methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA). The two omics data were integrated and analyzed using bioinformatics, and the results were validated using Parallel Reaction Monitoring (PRM). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to evaluate the predictive efficiency of the identified biomarkers for diagnosing CA-MRSA infection.ResultsAfter using the above-mentioned strategies, 109 DEPs were identified, out of which 86 were upregulated and 23 were downregulated. Additionally, a total of 61 and 26 DEMs were initially screened in the positive and negative ion modes, respectively. A conjoint analysis indicated that the amino acid metabolism, glycosphingolipid biosynthesis, and glycerophospholipid metabolism pathways were co-enriched by the upstream DEPs and downstream DEMs, which may be involved in structuring the related network of CA-MRSA infection. Furthermore, three significant DEMs, namely, indole-3-acetic acid, L-(−)-methionine, and D-sedoheptulose 7-phosphate, displayed good discriminative abilities in early identification of CA-MRSA infection in ROC analysis.ConclusionAs there is limited high-quality evidence and multiple omics research in this field, the explored candidate biomarkers and pathways may provide new insights into the early diagnosis and drug resistance mechanisms of CA-MRSA infection in Chinese women.

Unraveling the complexity of the 17 interacting sustainable development goals (SDGs) is crucial for their achievement. Empirically revealing the dimensions of the SDGs helps generalize the dominant features of SDGs and better understand their drivers. Here, using a database of 166 countries’ progress toward achieving each individual SDG, we found that about 70% of the variability of national SDG performance can be captured by three dimensions: socioeconomic development at the expense of resource and climate, the environment, and development at the expense of equality. Moreover, these dimensions are mainly affected by the economy; as gross domestic product (GDP) per capita increases, the first dimension increases monotonically, the environment dimension decreases and then increases, and the inequality dimension increases and then decreases. Our findings indicate a dim prospect of eventually achieving all SDGs because of the conflicts between economic growth and resource and climate goals under the current development paradigm, highlighting the importance of sustainable transformation.

The first laser–plasma interaction experiment using lasers of eight beams grouped into one octad has been conducted on the Shenguang Octopus facility. Although each beam intensity is below its individual threshold for stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBS), collective behaviors are excited to enhance the octad SBS. In particular, when two-color/cone lasers with wavelength separation 0.3 nm are used, the backward SBS reflectivities show novel behavior in which beams of longer wavelength achieve higher SBS gain. This property of SBS can be attributed to the rotation of the wave vectors of common ion acoustic waves due to the competition of detunings between geometrical angle and wavelength separation. This mechanism is confirmed using massively parallel supercomputer simulations with the three-dimensional laser–plasma interaction code LAP3D.

Summary: The transcription factor SHOX2 gene is critical in regulating gene expression and the development of tumors, but its biological role in prostate cancer (PCa) remains unclear. In this study, we found that SHOX2 expression was significantly raised in PCa tissues and was associated with clinicopathological features as well as disease-free survival (DFS) of PCa patients. Phenotypic tests showed that the absence of SHOX2 inhibited PCa growth and invasion, while SHOX2 overexpression promoted these effects. Mechanistically, SHOX2 was found to activate the transcription of nephronophthisis type 4 (NPHP4), a gene located downstream of SHOX2. Further analysis revealed that SHOX2 could potentially interfere with the Hippo-YAP signaling pathway through NPHP4 activation, facilitating the oncogenic behavior of PCa cells. These findings highlight SHOX2 as an oncogene in PCa and provide a basis for developing potential therapeutic approaches against this disease.

Adsorptive removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater is very important, and the key is the development of efficient sorbents. In this work, oxygenated alkynyl carbon materials (OACMs) were synthesized via mechanochemical reaction of CaC2 and a carbonate (CaCO3, Na2CO3, or NaHCO3) at ambient temperature. The resultant OACMs are micro mesoporous carbon nanomaterials with high specific area (>648 m2 g−1), highly crosslinked texture, and rich alkynyl and oxygenated groups. The OACMs exhibit excellent Hg(II) adsorption due to the soft acid-soft base interaction between alkynyl and Hg(II), and OACM-3 derived from CaC2 and NaHCO3 has the saturated Hg(II) adsorbance of 483.9 mg g−1 along with good selectivity and recyclability. The adsorption is mainly chemisorption following the Langmuir mode. OACM-3 also shows high adsorbance for other heavy metal ions, e.g. 256.6 mg g−1 for Pb(II), 232.4 mg g−1 for Zn(II), and 198.7 mg g−1 for Cu(II). This work expands the mechnochemical reaction of CaC2 with carbonates and possibly other oxyanionic salts, provides a new synthesis approach for functional alkynyl carbon materials with excellent adsorption performance for heavy metal ions, as well as a feasible approach for CO2 resource utilization.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), a natural common inorganic material with good biocompatibility, low toxicity, pH sensitivity, and low cost, has a widespread use in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. In recent years, an increasing number of CaCO3-based nano-drug delivery systems have been developed. CaCO3 as a drug carrier and the utilization of CaCO3 as an efficient Ca2+ and CO2 donor have played a critical role in tumor diagnosis and treatment and have been explored in increasing depth and breadth. Starting from the CaCO3-based nano-drug delivery system, this paper systematically reviews the preparation of CaCO3 nanoparticles and the mechanisms of CaCO3-based therapeutic effects in the internal and external tumor environments and summarizes the latest advances in the application of CaCO3-based nano-drug delivery systems in tumor therapy. In view of the good biocompatibility and in vivo therapeutic mechanisms, they are expected to become an advancing biomedicine in the field of tumor diagnosis and treatment.

It is beneficial to calibrate the period–Wesenheit–metallicity relation (PWZR) of Delta Cephei stars (DCEPs), i.e., classical Cepheids, using accurate parallaxes of associated open clusters (OCs) from Gaia data release 3 (DR3). To this aim, we obtain a total of 43 OC–DCEPs (including 33 fundamental mode, 9 first overtone mode, and 1 multimode DCEPs) and calibrate the PWZR as ${W}_{G}=(-3.356\pm 0.033)(\mathrm{log}P-1)+(-5.947\pm 0.025)$ + (−0.285 ± 0.064)[Fe/H]. The concurrently obtained residual parallax offset in OCs, zp = −4 ± 5 μ as, demonstrates the adequacy of the parallax corrections within the magnitude range of OC member stars. By comparing the field DCEPs’ DR3 parallaxes with their photometric parallaxes derived by our PWZR, we estimated the residual parallax offset in field DCEPs as zp = −15 ± 3 μ as. Using our PWZR, we estimate the distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud to be 18.482 ± 0.040 mag, which aligns well with the most accurate published value obtained through geometric methods.

We identify a molecular bubble, and study the star formation and its feedback in the S Mon region, using multiple molecular lines, young stellar objects (YSOs), and infrared data. We revisit the distance to S Mon, ∼722 ± 9 pc, using Gaia Data Release 3 parallaxes of the associated Class II YSOs. The bubble may be mainly driven by a massive binary system (namely 15 Mon), the primary of which is an O7V-type star. An outflow is detected in the shell of the bubble, suggesting ongoing star formation activities in the vicinity of the bubble. The total wind energy of the massive binary star is 3 orders of magnitude higher than the sum of the observed turbulent energy in the molecular gas and the kinetic energy of the bubble, indicating that stellar winds help to maintain the turbulence in the S Mon region and drive the bubble. We conclude that the stellar winds of massive stars have an impact on their surrounding environment.

Emotions play a crucial role in human life and affect mental health. Understanding the neural patterns associated with emotions is essential. Previous studies carried out some exploration of the neural features of emotions, but most have designed experiments in two-dimensional (2D) environments, which differs from real-life scenarios. To create a more real environment, this study investigated emotion-related brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG) microstate analysis in a virtual reality (VR) environment. We recruited 42 healthy volunteers to participate in our study. We explored the dynamic features of different emotions, and four characteristic microstates were analyzed. In the alpha band, microstate A exhibited a higher occurrence in both negative and positive emotions than in neutral emotions. Microstate C exhibited a prolonged duration of negative emotions compared to positive emotions, and a higher occurrence was observed in both microstates C and D during positive emotions. Notably, a unique transition pair was observed between microstates B and C during positive emotions, whereas a unique transition pair was observed between microstates A and D during negative emotions. This study emphasizes the potential of integrating virtual reality (VR) and EEG to facilitate experimental design. Furthermore, this study enhances our comprehension of neural activities during various emotional states.

Considering the high incidence of accidents at tunnel construction sites, using robots to replace humans in hazardous tasks can effectively safeguard their lives. However, most robots currently used in this field require manual control and lack autonomous obstacle avoidance capability. To address these issues, we propose a lightweight model based on an improved version of YOLOv5 for obstacle detection. Firstly, to enhance detection speed and reduce computational load, we modify the backbone network to the lightweight Shufflenet v2. Secondly, we introduce a coordinate attention mechanism to enhance the network’s ability to learn feature representations. Subsequently, we replace the neck convolution block with GSConv to improve the model’s efficiency. Finally, we modify the model’s upsampling method to further enhance detection accuracy. Through comparative experiments on the model, the results demonstrate that our approach achieves an approximately 37% increase in detection speed with a minimal accuracy reduction of 1.5%. The frame rate has improved by about 54%, the parameter count has decreased by approximately 74%, and the model size has decreased by 2.5 MB. The experimental results indicate that our method can reduce hardware requirements for the model, striking a balance between detection speed and accuracy.

IntroductionElectroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities are seen in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with characteristic features of cognitive impairment. The most common findings of EEG features in AD and MCI patients are increased relative power of slow oscillations (delta and theta rhythms) and decreased relative power of fast oscillations (alpha, beta and gamma rhythms). However, impairments in cognitive processes in AD and MCI are not sufficiently reflected by brain oscillatory activity in a particular frequency band. MCI patients are at high risk of progressing to AD. Cross-frequency coupling (CFC), which refers to coupling between different frequency bands, is a crucial tool for comprehending changes in brain oscillations and cognitive performance. CFC features exhibit some specificity in patients with AD and MCI, but a comparison between CFC features in individuals with these disorders is still lacking. The aim of this study was to explore changes in CFC properties in MCI and AD and to explore the relationship between CFC properties and multiple types of cognitive functional performance.MethodsWe recorded resting-state EEG (rsEEG) signals in 46 MCI patients, 43 AD patients, and 43 cognitively healthy controls (HCs) and analyzed the changes in CFC as well as the relationship between CFC and scores on clinical tests of cognitive function.Results and discussionMultiple couplings between low-frequency oscillations and high-frequency oscillations were found to be significantly enhanced in AD patients compared to those of HCs and MCI, while delta-gamma as well as theta-gamma couplings in the right temporal and parietal lobes were significantly enhanced in MCI patients compared to HCs. Moreover, theta-gamma coupling in the right temporal lobe tended to be stronger in MCI patients than in HCs, and it was stronger in AD than in MCI. Multiple CFC properties were found to correlate significantly with various cognitive domains, especially the memory function domain. Overall, these findings suggest that AD and MCI patients must use more neural resources to maintain a resting brain state and that alterations in theta-gamma coupling in the temporal lobe become progressively obvious during disease progression and are likely to be a valuable indicator of MCI and AD pathology.

For over 50 years, various ion beam facilities have been utilized to simulate the irradiation effect of neutrons on relevant nuclear materials. However, due to the limitation of single ion beam irradiation, the injection of H2+ and He+ into the sample coaxially is necessary to observe the synergy of hydrogen and helium displacement damage. This study presents a beam line design that is capable of separating ions with different charge mass ratios, screening out unwanted particles, and finally combining the separated beams again. Through this design, H+, H2+, and He+ beams can be completely separated with an axis deviation of less than 0.5 mm after beam combination. Furthermore, the proportion of H2+ and He+ can be adjusted by regulating the inlet air of the ion source, down to the accuracy of a single ion. An accelerating tube is employed to adjust the energy of implanted ions within 10–50 keV. This device also has the capability to efficiently transmit a single type of ion while filtering out extraneous ions (such as O+ beam). The fine-beam optical design not only makes it easy to adjust beam parameters but also eliminates the need for a high-precision power supply. The goal of this work is to have an analytical tool to understand the effect of each electromagnetic component on the ion trajectories.

The sorption-enhanced steam gasification of biomass (SEBSG) is considered a prospective thermo-chemical technology for high-purity H2 production with in-situ CO2 capture. Fundamental concepts and operating conditions of SEBSG technology were summarized in this review. Considerable industrial demonstration units have been conducted on pilot scales for large-scale availability of the SEBSG process. The influence of process parameters such as reaction temperature, Steam/Biomass (S/B) ratio, feedstock characteristics, cyclic CO2 capture capacity of CaO-based sorbents, and catalysis, were critically reviewed to provide theoretical recommendations for industrial operation. Bifunctional materials that have high catalytic activity and CO2 capture activity are crucial for ensuring high H2 production in the SEBSG. The application of density functional theory (DFT) and reactive force field molecular dynamic (ReaxFF MD) simulations on microcosmic reaction mechanisms in the SEBSG process, such as pyrolysis, WGS and reforming reactions, and CO2 capture of CaO-based materials are comprehensively overviewed. Several research gaps, like the exploitation of more efficient and low-cost bifunctional material, integrated process economics and revelation of well-rounded mechanisms, need to be filled for the following large-scale industrial applications.

Many leading countries are boosting renewables, especially solar energy, as a major way to mitigate future energy crises and climate change. Particularly, in China, the number and scale of photovoltaic (PV) power stations have grown unprecedentedly in the last decade. There is an urgent need to monitor the PV power development in order to accurately estimate national renewable potentials and understand the ecological impacts. However, there are few efforts towards providing spatially explicit and time-series datasets of PV development at the regional and national scales. To fill the gap, this study proposes an integrated remote sensing approach for PV power stations mapping by combining image segmentation and object-based classification (ISOC) techniques. We took five northwestern provinces of China as an illustration and produced 30-m medium-resolution PV power station distribution maps from 2007 to 2019. Our analysis shows that the total area of PV power stations in the five provinces increased to 722 km 2 in 2019, with producer, user and overall accuracies of 86%, 100% and 93%. Of the 309 PV station clusters (hereafter, PV parks), the top 7% largest ones account for 61% of the total area of PV power stations, indicating that PV power stations in the Northwest tend to be developed in the form of large-scale centralized PV parks. The land used for PV power stations was mainly converted from four land cover types: Gobi Desert, sandy land, sparse grassland, and moderate grassland. The central government policy on facilitating clean energy played a major role in driving the rapid expansion of PV parks across the country. The methodology and results of this study will help policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to develop corresponding industrial standards and environmental regulations to mitigate the potential environmental impacts, and promote more sustainable development of solar energy in China and beyond.

BackgroundDisulfidptosis is a recently discovered form of cell death. However, its biological mechanisms in bladder cancer (BCa) are yet to be understood.MethodsDisulfidptosis-related clusters were identified by consensus clustering. A disulfidptosis-related gene (DRG) prognostic model was established and verified in various datasets. A series of experiments including qRT-PCR, immunoblotting, IHC, CCK-8, EdU, wound-healing, transwell, dual-luciferase reporter, and ChIP assays were used to study the biological functions.ResultsWe identified two DRG clusters, which exhibited distinct clinicopathological features, prognosis, and tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) landscapes. A DRG prognostic model with ten features (DCBLD2, JAM3, CSPG4, SCEL, GOLGA8A, CNTN1, APLP1, PTPRR, POU5F1, CTSE) was established and verified in several external datasets in terms of prognosis and immunotherapy response prediction. BCa patients with high DRG scores may be characterized by declined survival, inflamed TIME, and elevated tumor mutation burden. Besides, the correlation between DRG score and immune checkpoint genes and chemoradiotherapy-related genes indicated the implication of the model in personalized therapy. Furthermore, random survival forest analysis was performed to select the top important features within the model: POU5F1 and CTSE. qRT-PCR, immunoblotting, and immunohistochemistry assays showed the enhanced expression of CTSE in BCa tumor tissues. A series of phenotypic assays revealed the oncogenetic roles of CTSE in BCa cells. Mechanically, POU5F1 can transactivate CTSE, promoting BCa cell proliferation and metastasis.ConclusionsOur study highlighted the disulfidptosis in the regulation of tumor progression, sensitivity to therapy, and survival of BCa patients. POU5F1 and CTSE may be potential therapeutic targets for the clinical treatment of BCa.
