1. In situ digital testing method for quality assessment of soft soil improvement with polyurethane

Abstract: This study purposes an in situ testing method on quality assessment of soil improvement. Factual drilling data includes the spatial distribution and in situ strength of untreated and treated soil along three different drillholes measured by on-site drilling monitoring method. These factual drilling data can characterize the degree of soil improvement by penetration injection with permeable polyurethane. Result from on-site drilling monitoring shows that the linear zones represent constant drilling speeds shown in the plot of drill bit advancement vs. net drilling time, which indicates the spatial distributions of soil profile. The soil profile at the study site is composed of four layers, which includes fill, untreated silty clay, treated silty clay, and mucky soil. The results of soil profile are verified by the parallel site loggings. The constant drilling speeds profile the coring-resistant strength of drilled soils. By comparing with the untreated silty clay, the constant drilling speeds of the treated silty clay have been decreased by 13.0–62.8%. Two drilling-speed-based indices of 61.2% and 65.6% are proposed to assess the decreased average drilling speed and the increased in situ strength of treated silty clay. Laboratory tests, i.e. uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) test, have been performed with core sample to investigate and characterize in situ strength by comparing that with drilling speeds. Results show that the average predicted strengths of treated silty clay are 2.4–6.9 times higher than the average measured strength of untreated silty clay. The UCS-based indices of 374.5% and 344.2% verified the quality assessment (QA) results by this new in situ method. This method provides a cost-effective tool for quality assessment of soil improvement by utilizing the digital drilling data.

Abstract: We report on the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of net-proton cumulant ratios up to sixth order from s=200 GeV p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured ratios C4/C2, C5/C1, and C6/C2 decrease with increased charged-particle multiplicity and rapidity acceptance. Neither the Skellam baselines nor PYTHIA8 calculations account for the observed multiplicity dependence. In addition, the ratios C5/C1 and C6/C2 approach negative values in the highest-multiplicity events, which implies that thermalized QCD matter may be formed in p+p collisions.

Abstract: We report the first measurements of cumulants, up to 4th order, of deuteron number distributions and proton-deuteron correlations in Au+Au collisions recorded by the STAR experiment in phase-I of Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Deuteron cumulants, their ratios, and proton-deuteron mixed cumulants are presented for different collision centralities covering a range of center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=7.7 to 200 GeV. It is found that the cumulant ratios at lower collision energies favor a canonical ensemble over a grand canonical ensemble in thermal models. An anti-correlation between proton and deuteron multiplicity is observed across all collision energies and centralities, consistent with the expectation from global baryon number conservation. The UrQMD model coupled with a phase-space coalescence mechanism qualitatively reproduces the collision-energy dependence of cumulant ratios and proton-deuteron correlations.

4. Effects of aging state on the low-cycle fatigue properties of 2024 aluminum alloy

Abstract: To reveal the effects of aging state on the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) performance of 2024 Al alloy, LCF experiments were conducted on the 2024 Al alloy with three aging states (underaged (UA), peak-aging (PA) and overaged (OA)), respectively. It is found that under the total strain amplitude and plastic strain amplitude control, the Al alloy at UA and OA states exhibits higher LCF lives than that at PA state, respectively. For a more comprehensive evaluation, a hysteretic energy model with W0 as the fatigue damage capacity and β as the fatigue damage resisting exponent was used, which also shows the advantages of the OA states. This is because although the OA state has lower fatigue damage capacity W0 for the inferior strength-plasticity combination compared to the UA state, it has higher fatigue damage resistance exponent β because the obvious wavy slip manner of dislocations is conducive to strain homogenization, which is more important for increasing the fatigue life. Therefore, this study gives a comprehensive evaluation and revelation on the effects of aging state on the LCF properties of 2024 alloy.

Abstract: The differential cross section for Z0 production, measured as a function of the boson's transverse momentum (pT), provides important constraints on the evolution of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). The transverse single spin asymmetry (TSSA) of the Z0 is sensitive to one of the polarized TMDs, the Sivers function, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in p+p →W/Z+X from that which enters in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In this Letter, the STAR Collaboration reports the first measurement of the Z0/γ⁎ differential cross section as a function of its pT in p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 510 GeV, together with the Z0/γ⁎ total cross section. We also report the measurement of Z0/γ⁎ TSSA in transversely polarized p+p collisions at 510 GeV.

Abstract: We report results on an elastic cross section measurement in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=510 GeV, obtained with the Roman Pot setup of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elastic differential cross section is measured in the four-momentum transfer squared range 0.23≤−t≤0.67 GeV2. This is the only measurement of the proton-proton elastic cross section in this t range for collision energies above the Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) and below the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) colliders. We find that a constant slope B does not fit the data in the aforementioned t range, and we obtain a much better fit using a second-order polynomial for B(t). This is the first measurement below the LHC energies for which the non-constant behavior B(t) is observed. The t dependence of B is also determined using six subintervals of t in the STAR measured t range, and is in good agreement with the phenomenological models. The measured elastic differential cross section dσ/dt agrees well with the results obtained at s=540 GeV for proton–antiproton collisions by the UA4 experiment. We also determine that the integrated elastic cross section within the STAR t-range is σelfid=462.1±0.9(stat.)±1.1(syst.)±11.6(scale) μb.

7. Mechanical properties of three typical aluminum alloy strips prepared by twin-roll casting

Abstract: Twin-roll casting (TRC) is a near-net shape processing technology that has found widespread application across various series of Al alloys. In this study, the process-structure-property relationships of 2099, 3003, and 6082 Al alloy strips prepared by TRC and traditional rolling (TR) methods were investigated. It shows that the tensile strength and fatigue strength of 2099-TRC are lower than 2099-TR, which is attributed to the reduced solid solubility of copper (Cu) elements resulting from the precipitation of Cu-rich micron phases and the presence of microstructure inhomogeneities. While both 3003-TRC and 3003-TR materials exhibit similar yield and tensile strength, the occurrence of casting micro-void defects in 3003-TRC leads to an accelerated accumulation of fatigue damage, consequently diminishing its fatigue strength. Conversely, 6082-TRC demonstrates an enhanced fatigue strength relative to 6082-TR. This improvement is primarily linked to the higher yield strength and comparable fatigue resistance observed in the former. In light of these findings, the TRC process holds promise for enhancing the fatigue performance of 6xxx Al alloy strips with good elongation. However, for 2xxx and 3xxx alloy strips with comparatively lower elongation, the TRC process enhancements may be necessary to realize similar benefits. The insights gleaned from this study could offer valuable reference and guidance for optimizing both the TRC process itself and the fatigue performance of Al alloy strips.

Abstract: Density fluctuations near the QCD critical point can be probed via an intermittency analysis in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We report the first measurement of intermittency in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 7.7-200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The scaled factorial moments of identified charged hadrons are analyzed at mid-rapidity and within the transverse momentum phase space. We observe a power-law behavior of scaled factorial moments in Au+Au collisions and a decrease in the extracted scaling exponent (ν) from peripheral to central collisions. The ν is consistent with a constant for different collisions energies in the mid-central (10-40%) collisions. Moreover, the ν in the 0-5% most central Au+Au collisions exhibits a non-monotonic energy dependence that reaches a minimum around sNN = 27 GeV. The physics implications on the QCD phase structure are discussed.

Abstract: A decisive experimental test of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is considered one of the major scientific goals at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) towards understanding the nontrivial topological fluctuations of the Quantum Chromodynamics vacuum. In heavy-ion collisions, the CME is expected to result in a charge separation phenomenon across the reaction plane, whose strength could be strongly energy dependent. The previous CME searches have been focused on top RHIC energy collisions. In this Letter, we present a low energy search for the CME in Au+Au collisions at sNN=27 GeV. We measure elliptic flow scaled charge-dependent correlators relative to the event planes that are defined at both mid-rapidity |η|

Abstract: The linear and mode-coupled contributions to higher-order anisotropic flow are presented for Au+Au collisions at sNN = 27, 39, 54.4, and 200 GeV and compared to similar measurements for Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The coefficients and the flow harmonics' correlations, which characterize the linear and mode-coupled response to the lower-order anisotropies, indicate a beam energy dependence consistent with an influence from the specific shear viscosity (η/s). In contrast, the dimensionless coefficients, mode-coupled response coefficients, and normalized symmetric cumulants are approximately beam-energy independent, consistent with a significant role from initial-state effects. These measurements could provide unique supplemental constraints to (i) distinguish between different initial-state models and (ii) delineate the temperature (T) and baryon chemical potential (μB) dependence of the specific shear viscosity ηs(T,μB).

Abstract: Measurements of mass and Λ binding energy of Λ4H and Λ4He in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV are presented, with an aim to address the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) problem in hypernuclei systems with atomic number A = 4. The Λ binding energies are measured to be 2.22±0.06(stat.)±0.14(syst.) MeV and 2.38±0.13(stat.)±0.12(syst.) MeV for Λ4H and Λ4He, respectively. The measured Λ binding-energy difference is 0.16±0.14(stat.)±0.10(syst.) MeV for ground states. Combined with the γ-ray transition energies, the binding-energy difference for excited states is −0.16±0.14(stat.)±0.10(syst.) MeV, which is negative and comparable to the value of the ground states within uncertainties. Abstract: We report the first multi-differential measurements of strange hadrons of K−, ϕ and Ξ− yields as well as the ratios of ϕ/K− and ϕ/Ξ− in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV with the STAR experiment fixed target configuration at RHIC. The ϕ mesons and Ξ− hyperons are measured through hadronic decay channels, ϕ→K+K− and Ξ−→Λπ−. Collision centrality and rapidity dependence of the transverse momentum spectra for these strange hadrons are presented. The 4π yields and ratios are compared to thermal model and hadronic transport model predictions. At this collision energy, thermal model with grand canonical ensemble (GCE) under-predicts the ϕ/K− and ϕ/Ξ− ratios while the result of canonical ensemble (CE) calculations reproduce ϕ/K−, with the correlation length rc∼2.7 fm, and ϕ/Ξ−, rc∼4.2 fm, for the 0-10% central collisions. Hadronic transport models including high mass resonance decays could also describe the ratios. While thermal calculations with GCE work well for strangeness production in high energy collisions, the change to CE at 3 GeV implies a rather different medium property at high baryon density.

Abstract: In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, partonic collectivity is evidenced by the constituent quark number scaling of elliptic flow anisotropy for identified hadrons. A breaking of this scaling and dominance of baryonic interactions is found for identified hadron collective flow measurements in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions. In this paper, we report measurements of the first- and second-order azimuthal anisotropic parameters, v1 and v2, of light nuclei (d, t, 3He, 4He) produced in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at the STAR experiment. An atomic mass number scaling is found in the measured v1 slopes of light nuclei at mid-rapidity. For the measured v2 magnitude, a strong rapidity dependence is observed. Unlike v2 at higher collision energies, the v2 values at mid-rapidity for all light nuclei are negative and no scaling is observed with the atomic mass number. Calculations by the Jet AA Microscopic Transport Model (JAM), with baryonic mean-field plus nucleon coalescence, are in good agreement with our observations, implying baryonic interactions dominate the collective dynamics in 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Abstract: We report on the measurements of directed flow v1 and elliptic flow v2 for hadrons (π±, K±, KS0, p, ϕ, Λ and Ξ−) from Au+Au collisions at sNN=3GeV and v2 for (π±, K±, p and p‾) at 27 and 54.4GeV with the STAR experiment. While at the two higher energy midcentral collisions the number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling holds, at 3GeV the v2 at midrapidity is negative for all hadrons and the NCQ scaling is absent. In addition, the v1 slopes at midrapidity for almost all observed hadrons are found to be positive, implying dominant repulsive baryonic interactions. The features of negative v2 and positive v1 slope at 3GeV can be reproduced with a baryonic mean-field in transport model calculations. These results imply that the medium in such collisions is likely characterized by baryonic interactions.

Abstract: Measurement by the STAR experiment at RHIC of the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects experienced by inclusive J/ψ at mid-rapidity in 0-100% p+Au collisions at sNN = 200 GeV is presented. Such effects are quantified utilizing the nuclear modification factor, RpAu, obtained by taking a ratio of J/ψ yield in p+Au collisions to that in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The differential J/ψ yield in both p+p and p+Au collisions is measured through the dimuon decay channel, taking advantage of the trigger capability provided by the Muon Telescope Detector in the RHIC 2015 run. Consequently, the J/ψ RpAu is derived within the transverse momentum (pT) range of 0 to 10 GeV/c. A suppression of approximately 30% is observed for pT

Abstract: Garlic (Allium sativum L.) and its constituents have been shown to modify rumen fermentation and improve growth performance. Garlic skin, a by-product of garlic processing, contains similar bioactive components as garlic bulb. This study aimed to investigate the effects of garlic skin supplementation on growth performance, ruminal microbes, and metabolites in ruminants. Twelve Hu lambs were randomly assigned to receive a basal diet (CON) or a basal diet supplemented with 80 g/kg DM of garlic skin (GAS). The experiment lasted for 10 weeks, with the first 2 weeks serving as the adaptation period. The results revealed that the average daily gain and volatile fatty acid concentration were higher (P 0.10) affect the α-diversity indices, including the Chao1 index, the abundance-based coverage estimator value, and the Shannon and Simpson indices. Abstract: Flow harmonics (vn) of the Fourier expansion for the azimuthal distributions of hadrons are commonly employed to quantify the azimuthal anisotropy of particle production relative to the collision symmetry planes. While lower order Fourier coefficients (v2 and v3) are more directly related to the corresponding eccentricities of the initial state, the higher-order flow harmonics (vn>3) can be induced by a mode-coupled response to the lower-order anisotropies, in addition to a linear response to the same-order anisotropies. These higher-order flow harmonics and their linear and mode-coupled contributions can be used to more precisely constrain the initial conditions and the transport properties of the medium in theoretical models. The multiparticle azimuthal cumulant method is used to measure the linear and mode-coupled contributions in the higher-order anisotropic flow, the mode-coupled response coefficients, and the correlations of the event plane angles for charged particles as functions of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy sNN= 200 GeV. The results are compared to similar LHC measurements as well as to several viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying initial conditions.

Abstract: We report results on the total and elastic cross sections in proton-proton collisions at s=200 GeV obtained with the Roman Pot setup of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elastic differential cross section was measured in the squared four-momentum transfer range 0.045≤−t≤0.135 GeV2. The value of the exponential slope parameter B of the elastic differential cross section dσ/dt∼e−Bt in the measured −t range was found to be B=14.32±0.09(stat.)−0.28+0.13(syst.) GeV−2. The total cross section σtot, obtained from extrapolation of the dσ/dt to the optical point at −t=0, is σtot=54.67±0.21(stat.)−1.38+1.28(syst.) mb. We also present the values of the elastic cross section σel=10.85±0.03(stat.)−0.41+0.49(syst.) mb, the elastic cross section integrated within the STAR t-range σeldet=4.05±0.01(stat.)−0.17+0.18(syst.) mb, and the inelastic cross section σinel=43.82±0.21(stat.)−1.44+1.37(syst.) mb. The results are compared with the world data.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and performance of Arndt-endobronchial blocker (Arndt) combined with laryngeal mask airway (LMA) compared with left-sided double-lumen endobronchial tube (L-DLT) in morbidly obese patients in one-lung ventilation (OLV). In a prospective, randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial, 80 morbidly obese patients (ASA I-III, aged 20–70) undergoing general anesthesia for elective thoracic surgeries were randomly allocated into groups Arndt (n=40) and L-DLT (n=40). In group Arndt, a LMA™ Proseal was placed followed by an Arndt-endobronchial blocker. In group L-DLT, patients were intubated with a left-sided double-lumen endotracheal tube. Primary endpoints were the airway establishment, ease of insertion, oxygenation, lung collapse and surgical field exposure. Results showed similar ease of airway establishment and tube/device insertion between the two groups. Abstract: Seizures are the most common clinical presentation of severe hypoglycemia, usually as a side effect of insulin treatment for juvenile onset type 1 diabetes mellitus and advanced type 2 diabetes. We used the mouse thick hippocampal slice preparation to study the pathophysiology of hypoglycemia-induced seizures and the effects of severe glucose depletion on the isolated hippocampal rhythms from the CA3 circuitry. Methods and results: Dropping the glucose perfusate concentration from the standard 10 mM to 1 mM produced epileptiform activity in 14/16 of the slices. Seizure-like events (SLEs) originated in the CA3 region and then spread into the CA1 region. Following the SLE, a spreading-depression (SD)-like event occurred (12/16 slices) with irreversible synaptic failure in the CA1 region (8/12 slices). CA3 SD-like events followed ~30 s after the SD-like event in the CA1 region. Less commonly, SD-like events originated in the CA3 region (4/12). Additionally, prior to the onset of the SLE in the CA3 area, there was decreased GABA correlated baseline SPW activity (bSPW), while there was increased large-amplitude sharp wave (LASW) activity, thought to originate from synchronous pyramidal cell firing. CA3 pyramidal cells displayed progressive tonic depolarization prior to the seizure which was resistant to synaptic transmission blockade. The initiation of hypoglycemic seizures and SD was prevented by AMPA/kainate or NMDA receptor blockade. Conclusions: Severe glucose depletion induces rapid changes initiated in the intrinsic CA3 rhythms of the hippocampus including depressed inhibition and enhanced excitation, which may underlie the mechanisms of seizure generation and delayed spreading depression.

Abstract: Purpose Solder bumps for chip interconnections are downsizing from current approximately 100 µm to the expected 1 µm in future. As a result, the Cu-Ni cross-interaction in Cu/Solder/Ni solder joints will be more complicated and then strongly influence the growth of the intermetallic compounds (IMCs). Thus, it is critical to understand the fundamental aspects of interfacial reaction in micro solder joints. This paper aims to reveal the effect mechanism of reflow temperature and solder size on the interfacial reaction in Cu/Solder/Ni solder joints. Design/methodology/approach The Cu-Ni cross-interaction in the Cu/Sn/Ni micro solder joints with 50 and 100 µm solder sizes at 250°C and 300°C were observed, respectively. The line-type interconnects were soaked in silicone oil, and the temperature of the line-type interconnects was 250 ± 3°C and 300 ± 3°C, which were monitored by a fine K-type thermocouple, and followed by an isothermal aging process at various times. After aging, the specimens were removed from the silicone oil and cooled in the air to room temperature. Findings The major interfacial reaction product on both interfaces was (Cu,Ni)6Sn5, and the asymmetric growth of (Cu,Ni)6Sn5, evidenced by the thickness of (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 IMCs at the Sn/Ni interface was always larger than that at the Sn/Cu interface, resulted from the directional migration of Cu atoms toward the Sn/Ni interface under Cu concentration gradient. The morphology of (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 IMC at Sn/Cu interface was columnlike at 250°C, and which changed from columnlike to scallop with large aspect ratio at 300°C, while that at Sn/Ni interface gradually evolved from needlelike to the mixture of needlelike and layered at 250°C, and which evolved from needlelike to scallop with large aspect ratio at 300°C. The evolution of morphology of (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 is attributed to the content of Ni. Furthermore, the results indicate that the Cu-Ni cross-interaction was stronger with small solder size and relatively low temperature in the Cu/Sn/Ni micro solder joints. Originality/value The asymmetric growth of (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 in the Cu/Sn/Ni micro solder joints, evidenced by the thickness of (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 IMCs at the Sn/Ni interface, was always larger than that at the Sn/Cu interface. 26. Comparative study on solid-solid interfacial reaction and bonding property of Sn-Ag-Cu/Ni-P joints by laser and reflow soldering

Abstract: Purpose Laser soldering has attracted attention as an alternative soldering process for microsoldering due to its localized and noncontact heating, a rapid rise and fall in temperature, fluxless and easy automation compared to reflow soldering. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu/Ni-P joints after laser and reflow soldering and isothermal aging were compared and analyzed. Findings In the as-soldered Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu/Ni-P joints, a small granular and loose (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 intermetallic compound (IMC) structure was formed by laser soldering regardless of the laser energy, and a long and needlelike (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 IMC structure was generated by reflow soldering. During aging at 150°C, the growth rate of the IMC layer was faster by laser soldering than by reflow soldering. The shear strength of as-soldered joints for reflow soldering was similar to that of laser soldering with 7.5 mJ, which sharply decreased from 0 to 100 h for both cases and then was maintained at a similar level with increasing aging time. Originality/value Laser soldering with certain energy is effective for reducing the thickness of IMCs, and ensuring the mechanical property of the joints was similar to reflow soldering.

Abstract: A general rule of strength and plasticity is proposed for three typical wrought Al alloys (2xxx, 6xxx, and 7xxx) subjected to different aging times. Investigations of the work-hardening processes and dislocation configurations in tensile and compressive testing reveal that this general rule arises because there is a common mechanism for these three kinds of wrought alloys whereby the tendency for cross-slip increases monotonously with aging time. By analyzing the strain hardening exponent and the stacking fault energy, it is demonstrated that the change in the dislocation slip mode is attributed mainly to the formation of second phases rather than to the matrix composition. Accordingly, a new work-hardening model is proposed for wrought Al alloys containing second phases and this explains the interaction between dislocations and second phases and other relevant experimental phenomena. This study is therefore beneficial for quantitatively investigating and optimizing the strength and plasticity of wrought aluminum alloys.

Abstract: The high cost and low efficiency of fatigue tests are bottleneck problem for the anti-fatigue design of metallic materials. For this problem, a theoretical fatigue model is proposed in this study, the possible applications have also been discussed. Specific results would be introduced in two serial papers, in which the first paper focuses on the model building and the applications on fatigue strength prediction; the second paper put emphasis on the influencing factors of the model parameters and the applications on fatigue strength improvement. In this first paper, a theoretical model is proposed considering both the strength and plastic restrictions of fatigue strength. As the model builds up a brief relationship among yield strength (Y), tensile strength (T) and fatigue strength (F), it is named as the Y-T-F model. Through the verification with fatigue strength data covering various kinds of metallic materials and loading conditions, this Y-T-F model exhibits both generality and accuracy. With the Y-T-F model, the efficient fatigue strength prediction could be conducted by brief linear fitting and calculation, just through yield strength, tensile strength and several known fatigue strength data. Moreover, through its deduced Y-F model, the analytical formula of fatigue strength continuously changing with materials strengthening can be obtained, as well as the maximum value of fatigue strength and corresponding critical yield strength. In summary, the Y-T-F model would be useful for reducing the fatigue tests, thus providing new possibilities on the efficient anti-fatigue design and selection of metallic materials.

Abstract: In the first paper, a Y-T-F model was proposed based on the restrictions of both strength and plasticity; the corresponding applications on the fatigue strength prediction have also been discussed. In this second paper, the emphasis will be put on the issues of fatigue strength improvement. Based on the primary form of the Y-T-F model, the parameters are further analyzed and quantified, to clarify the influences of various factors on fatigue strength. Firstly, the damage capacity C is proved to be sensitive to the elastic modulus E, which could change with the alloying components and nano-scaled grain boundaries; the increase of E would lead to the increasing C, thus increase the fatigue strength. Secondly, the microstructure characteristic coefficient a, as well as the yield strength σy and tensile strength σb in the crack initiation region could be influenced by the processing mode, grain size and microstructure uniformity of materials; the change of microstructure characteristics would affect the changing tendency of tensile strength--fatigue strength relation via varying the values of a, σy and σb. Thirdly, the damage weight coefficient ω is found to be a reflection of the fatigue strength declination induced by defects; the defect dimension D, the defect shape correlated stress concentration coefficient Kt, as well as the strengthening level of matrix materials σb are all corresponding factors. Quantified correlations between the above parameters and corresponding factors are comprehensively built up, hence obtaining the influences of either a single factor or multiple factors on fatigue strength. This further developed Y-T-F model would be helpful to clarify the direction of fatigue strength improvement, and contribute to the anti-fatigue design optimization of metallic materials.

Abstract: A /2 screw dislocation is commonly dissociated into two /6 Shockley partial dislocations on {111} planes in face-centered cubic metals. As the two partials are not purely screw, different mechanisms of cross-slip could take place, depending on the stacking fault energy, applied stress and temperature. It is crucial to classify the mechanisms of cross-slip because each mechanism possesses its own reaction path with a special activation process. In this work, molecular dynamics simulations have been performed systematically to explore the cross-slip mechanism under different stresses and temperatures in three different metals Ag, Cu and Ni that have different stacking fault energies of 17.8, 44.4 and 126.8 mJ/m2, respectively. In Ag and Cu with low stacking fault energy, it is observed that the cross-slip mechanism of screw dislocations changes from the Fleischer obtuse angle (FLOA), to the Friedel-Escaig (FE), and then to the FL acute angle (FLAA) at low temperatures, with increasing the applied stress. However, when the temperature increases, the FE mechanism gradually becomes dominant, while the FLAA only occurs at the high stress region. In particular, the FLOA has not been observed in Ni because of its high stacking fault energy.

Abstract: The variation of stacking fault energy (SFE) in a number of binary Cu alloys is predicted through considering the Suzuki segregation by the full potential linearly augmented plane wave (FPLAPW) method. The calculated results show that some solute atoms (Mg, Al, Si, Zn, Ga, Ge, Cd, Sn, and Pb), which prefer to form the Suzuki segregation, may decrease the value of SFE; while the others (Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zr, Ag, and Au), which do not cause the Suzuki segregation may not decrease the SFE. Furthermore, it is interesting to find that the former alloying elements are located on the right of Cu group while the latter on the left of Cu group in the periodic table of elements. The intrinsic reasons for the new findings can be traced down to the valences electronic structure of solute and Cu atoms, i.e., the similarity of valence electronic structure between solute and Cu atoms increases the value of SFE, while the difference decreases the value of SFE.

Abstract: Nanostructured metals and alloys are generally strong but lack strain hardening due to enhanced grain boundary diffusion and sliding. Here, equal nanograined (ENG) and gradient nanograined (GNG) layered Cu/Ta architectures were acquired by introducing a hard and stable “artificial” interphase boundary zone (IBZ). The ENG architecture produced uniform plastic strain reaching 70% and high yield strength exceeding 1 GPa, which is attributed to the constraint effect of the tough IBZ on dislocation slip mediated co-deformation. The GNG architecture exhibited a remarkable linear strain hardening with hardening exponent of 1 due to the strong strain partitioning between soft and hard layers. The dominant deformation mechanism of the GNG nanocomposite evolves from partial dislocation emission to dislocation accumulation at interface with increasing strain based on the results from experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. This finding demonstrates that heterostructure with “artificial” IBZ may offer an alternative approach to design strong and tough materials.

Abstract: The presence of a gradient layer with an increased maximum microhardness and extended thickness is extremely attractive because it can enhance the service performances for surface-strengthened metallic materials. In this research, Cu-Al alloys with different Al contents and microstructures were processed by surface spinning strengthening (3S) and studies were conducted to examine the gradient microstructure and microhardness distributions of the 3S Cu-Al alloys. The experimental results show that each group of the 3S Cu-Al alloys having the same Al content has approximately the same maximum microhardness at the topmost surface layer and the maximum microhardness increases with an increase in the Al content. In addition, the thickness of the gradient layer in the 3S Cu-Al alloys increases with a decrease of yield strength and an increase in the work-hardening exponent, respectively. The relationship between the maximum microhardness and chemical composition which determines the Young's modulus and plastic deformation mode, and the relationship between the thickness of the gradient layer and the microstructure which governs the strength and work-hardening capacity, were both investigated. It is found that the maximum microhardness of the gradient layer depends mainly on the chemical composition; whereas the thickness of the gradient layer depends primarily on both the strength and work-hardening capacity which are closely related to the microstructure. By combining the compositional design and microstructure optimization of the materials, and improving the surface strengthening intensity, a gradient layer of the surface-strengthened materials with an enhanced maximum microhardness and an extended thickness may be achieved.

Abstract: The trade-off relation between the strength and the electrical conductivity has been a long-standing dilemma in metallic materials. In the study, three key principles, i.e. elongated grains, sharp texture and nano-scale precipitates, were presented for preparing Al wire with high strength and high electrical conductivity based on the specially designed experiments for breaking the mutually exclusive relation between the strength and the electrical conductivity. The results show that the elongated grains could lead to a higher electrical conductivity in Al wire without sacrificing the strength; while, the sharp texture can efficiently strengthen the Al wire without influencing the electrical conductivity. Furthermore, nano-scale precipitates with proper size can simultaneously improve the strength and electrical conductivity of Al alloy wire. Under the guidance of the above three key principles, Al wires with high strength and high conductivity were prepared.

Abstract: In this work, the tensile and bending yield strengths of 304 stainless steel and H62 brass are effectively enhanced by surface spinning strengthening (3S) that can introduce a strengthening layer with gradient microstructure on the samples. The results show that the two metals exhibit distinct grain refinement in the top layer as well as severe grain deformation in the subsurface layer with obvious gradient characteristics. For the tensile yield strength, it increases from 336 MPa to 372 MPa for 304 stainless steel, and 280 MPa–294 MPa for H62 brass, respectively. For the bending yield strength, it increases from 581 MPa to 667 MPa for 304 stainless steel, and 496 MPa–523 MPa for H62 brass, respectively. A two-phase (soft and hard phases) structure for the surface strengthened metals is proposed to analyze the enhancement of the tensile yield strength, and the enhancement of tensile yield strength is determined by the maximum microhardness and the thickness of the hardened layer. The enhancement of bending yield strength may be attributed to the maximum microhardness and the corresponding nano-scale grains in the topmost layer. Based on the results above, the tensile and bending yield strengths can be improved and optimized by constructing the gradient microstructure with different grain refinement and microhardness distributions.

Abstract: As high-strength aluminum alloy for traction beam of high-speed rail, the fatigue strength of A7N01 aluminum alloy is particularly critical for its industrial application. In order to improve the fatigue strength of this aluminum alloy, three kinds of A7N01 aluminum alloy with different Si content were selected. The result indicates that, with the increase of Si element content, the fatigue strength is enhanced monotonously and meanwhile the dispersivity of S-N curves is largely reduced. Analyses of microstructure and the error of strength and hardness all indicate that the microstructure homogeneity of the alloy is improved when increasing the Si content, which is proved to be the main reason for the enhanced fatigue strength and reduced fatigue life dispersivity. Besides, it is found that the discontinuous distribution of the grain boundary precipitates due to the increase of Si content also contributes to the improved fatigue property.
