Background: Etiology of chronic liver disease (CLD) has an impact on the profile of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in terms of infection acquisition, resistance pattern, and treatment outcome. Aims and Objectives: This study aimed to study infection acquisition, antibiotic resistance pattern, and treatment outcome in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) cirrhosis with SBP. Materials and Methods: This observational prospective study was carried out in Government Medical College; Srinagar: over a period of 2 years from 2017 onward. We did analysis of patients with NAFLDs cirrhosis. We studied infection acquisition, antibiotic resistance pattern, and treatment outcome in this group of patients. Results: Over 2-year period, 246 patients were enrolled. The mean age of patients was 57.09±13.90 years. Hepatitis B virus and NAFLD were the major etiological contributors to the burden of CLD amounting to 51.20% in Kashmir. SBP was present in 33/57 (57.90%) of NAFLD cirrhosis patients. Child-Turcotte-Pugh Class C was 63.60%. Patients with culture-positive SBP (CP-SBP) were 45.45%. In patients of SBP with etiology other than NAFLD, CP-SBP was 61% whereas culture-negative SBP was 38.77%. Conclusion: In our region, NAFLD is one of the leading contributors to CLD. In this study, the trend toward worse treatment outcome and mortality in the patients with NAFLD SBP was observed.

On October 7, 2021, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the Harnai (Baluchistan) region of Pakistan, causing several fatalities and injuries within the epicentral area. First-order tectonic deformation in this region is caused by the convergence of the Indian Plate with respect to the Eurasian Plate. The Katwaz Block hinders the motion of the Indian Plate, resulting in the formation of strike-slip faults. In this study, the P-wave first-motion polarity technique was used to determine the mainshock faulting style. Cyclic scanning of the polarity solutions was applied to determine the most suitable focal mechanism solution among the available solutions generated by the FOCMEC (focal mechanism) software. The nodal planes correspond to different faulting styles (i.e., thrust and strike-slip faulting). A nodal plane oriented in the NW-SE direction corresponded to a strike-slip mechanism, which was considered to be the fault plane. Tectonically, this earthquake was associated with the Harnai-Karahi strike-slip fault zone owing to the fault strike and direction of slip. The apparent stress drop, fault length, and moment magnitude of the Harnai earthquake were 35.4 bar, 6.1 km, and 5.9, respectively. A lower b-value for the Gutenberg-Richter law was observed prior to the earthquake. Higher α- than b-values (α > b) indicate that this earthquake was governed by large events as opposed to small-magnitude events. The Harnai sequence had a decay exponent close to unity, lasted for 145 days, and produced few aftershocks. The study will help the future hazard mitigation in the region.

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the protective effects of botulinum toxin-A (Botox-A) on spasticity and nociceptive pain in individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCIs). PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from inception to July 2023. The primary outcome of interest was spasticity and nociceptive pain. We pooled the available data using the generic inverse variance method, and we used a fixed-effect/random-effects model. We then calculated standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) to estimate the effect size. A total of fourteen studies meeting the inclusion criteria comprised two randomized controlled trials, five pre-post studies, and seven case reports. Across the various study designs, the majority of trials were assessed to have fair to high quality. The hepatobiliary system is vital for the biotransformation and disposition of endogenous molecules. Any impairment in the normal functioning of the hepatobiliary system leads to a spectrum of hepatobiliary diseases (HBDs), such as liver cirrhosis, fatty liver, biliary dyskinesia, gallbladder cancer, etc. Especially in pregnancy, HBD may result in increased maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Maternal HBD is a burden to the fetus’s growth, complicates fetal development, and risks the mother’s life. In fetal programming, the maternal mechanism is significantly disturbed by multiple factors (especially diet) that influence the development of the fetus and increase the frequency of metabolic diseases later in life. Additionally, maternal under-nutrition or over-nutrition (especially in high-fat, high-carbohydrate, or protein-rich diets) lead to dysregulation in gut hormones (CCK, GLP-1, etc.), microbiota metabolite production (SCFA, LPS, TMA, etc.), neurotransmitters (POMC, NPY, etc.), and hepatobiliary signaling (insulin resistance, TNF-a, SREBPs, etc.), which significantly impact fetal programming. Recently, biotherapeutics have provided a new horizon for treating HBD during fetal programming to save the lives of the mother and fetus. This review focuses on how maternal impaired hepatobiliary metabolic signaling leads to disease transmission to the fetus mediated through the gut–brain axis.

Objective: Web in the small intestine of children is not a commonly encountered entity. Due to partial obstruction, patients may present with varied symptoms and at different ages. The study objective was to share our experience over the web in Jejunum and Ileum regarding its presentation, management, and outcome. Study type, settings & duration: This retrospective descriptive case series was conducted at Medicare Hospital, Saidpur Road, Rawalpindi from January 2021 to December 2022. Methodology: This descriptive case series was experience at a pediatric surgery center over twelve years. All patients with the diagnosis of web in the small intestine were included. The demographic details, presentation, investigations, management, and postoperative course were noted. Data was analyzed by SPSS version 26. Results: Eleven patients with web in small intestine were included in this study. The mean age of the patients was 35.42±50.81 months, and six patients (54.5%) were male. All patients presented with features of intestinal obstruction. All patients underwent surgery. Per-operatively, the web was found in 4 patients (36.4%) in the jejunum, while in 7 patients (63.6%), it was in the ileum. The mean hospital stay of the patients was 15.54±8.74 days. Nine of our patients (81.8%) were discharged safely to home; however, two patients (18.2%) died. The web of jejunum was found to be significantly associated with higher ventilator requirements, anastomotic leakage, redo surgery required, time to start an oral feed and total hospital stay compared to Ileal web. Background: There is increasing emphasis on restoring the efficacy of existing antibiotics instead of developing new ones. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the role of Cremophor EL and Cremophor RH40 in the inhibition of efflux pumps in MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains. Methods: Efflux pump-active MDR strains of P. aeruginosa were identified and confirmed by flow cytometry. The identified efflux-active strains were further subjected to determination of the MIC of ciprofloxacin and the synergistic role of non-ionic surfactants (Cremophor EL and Cremophor RH40) along with ciprofloxacin. Results: Out of 30 samples, 6 strains displayed high efflux pump activity. Both Cremophor EL and Cremophor RH40 showed efflux pump inhibitory roles. A 4-fold reduction in the MIC values of ciprofloxacin was observed when Cremophor EL was used along with ciprofloxacin, while a 6-fold reduction was observed when Cremophor RH40 was used along with ciprofloxacin. Both compounds showed synergistic effects with ciprofloxacin, ticarcillin and meropenem when used in a 24-well plate efflux pump inhibitory assay. Conclusion: The inhibition of the efflux pump of MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa by non-ionic surfactants, namely, Cremophor RH40 and Cremophor EL, provided the best strategy to restore the efficacy of ciprofloxacin.

Background: Extrahepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO) is caused by occlusion and cavernomatous transformation of the portal vein. The EHPVO is well characterized in children. However, the same is not valid for adults. We aimed to evaluate the clinico-etiological profile along with the management of adult patients. Aims and Objectives: We evaluated the clinico-etiological profile along with the management and outcomes of adult patients presenting with EHPVO. Materials and Methods: In a descriptive, observational study, patients between ages 15 and 75 years diagnosed with EHPVO on ultrasonography abdomen were included in the study. Liver cirrhosis and malignancy were considered as an exclusion criterion. There was evaluation of clinical and imaging findings along with biochemical analysis, workup for thrombophilia, treatment given to the patients, and follow-up. Results: Out of total 109 patients enrolled in the study, the median age of patients was ±40.25. Main clinical features were dyspepsia, abdominal discomfort, and splenomegaly. Out of 109, 27.5% patients showed fatty liver and 5.5% had both splanchnic vein thrombosis and fatty liver. Idiopathic EHPVO in majority of patients (80%), adult EHPVO with polycythemia rubra vera in 7.33% patients, adult EHPVO with heterozygous MTHFR mutation in 7.33% patients, and adult EHPVO with antiphospholipid antibody in 3.66%. No mortality was seen in this 5-year observational study and majority of the patients, i.e., 96 (88.1%) did not require any treatment. Conclusion: Relatively benign nature of adult EHPVO was found in the selected group of patients. Majority of the cases in our study were idiopathic and few had positive thrombophilia profile.

Abstract Background The B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) protein regulates programmed cell death throughout the disease conditions by upholding apoptotic pathways. However, the mechanism by which it’s expressed in chondrocytes still needs to be studied in chondrocyte-related disorders. Additionally, exploring the potential therapeutic role of Chlorogenic acid (CGA) in confluence with Bcl-2 modulation is of significant interest. Methods In vivo and in vitro studies were performed according to our previous methodologies. The chondrocytes were cultured in specific growth media under standard conditions after expression verification of different microRNAs through high-throughput sequencing and verification of Bcl-2 involvement in tibial growth plates. The effect of Bcl-2 expression was investigated by transfecting chondrocytes with miR-460a, siRNA, and their negative controls alone or in combination with CGA. The RNA was extracted and subjected to a reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Western blot analysis and immunofluorescence assays were performed to visualize the intracellular localization of Bcl-2 and associated proteins related to apoptotic and inflammasome pathways. Moreover, apoptosis through flow cytometry was also performed to understand the modulation of concerning pathways. Results The suppression of Bcl-2 induced higher apoptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction, leading to IL-1β maturation and affecting the inflammasome during chondrocyte proliferation. Conversely, overexpression attenuated the activation, as evidenced by reduced caspase activity and IL-1β maturation. In parallel, CGA successfully reduced siRNA-induced apoptosis by decreasing Cytochrome C (Cyto C) release from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm, which in turn decreased Caspase-3 and Caspase-7 cleavage with Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax). Furthermore, siBcl-2 transfection and CGA therapy increased chondrocyte proliferation and survival. The CGA also showed a promising approach to maintaining chondrocyte viability by inhibiting siRNA-induced apoptosis. Conclusions Targeting Bcl-2-mediated regulation might be a possible treatment for chondrocyte-related conditions. Moreover, these results add knowledge of the complicated processes underlying chondrocyte function and the pathophysiology of related diseases, highlighting the significance of target specific therapies. This study sought to evaluate the influence of knowledge, attitude, and practices assessment on diabetes related to obesity in Pakistani society. Data was collected both through door to door and online survey approaches from 518 participants by using a pre-validated questionnaire. A total of 15.6% were underweight, 61.2% were normal weight, 17.2% were overweight and 5.8% were in obesity class I and 2.9% were classified as obesity class II. The co-occurrence of obesity and diabetes was 29% (n = 22) among diabetic individuals (n = 84). A majority of the residents (59.1%) were from cities. While 94% of the participants responded to what obesity was, 83.8% knew what diabetes was. Fast food, soft drinks, and mayonnaise were deemed to be healthy by 75.1% of the respondents. Obesity was viewed as a disease by 94.8%, a major health issue by 78.2%, and a weight-loss necessity by 44.6% of participants. Only 24.9% exercised every day, and 23.9% engaged in any physical activity daily. The majority of respondents (50.6%) never tried to lose weight and 23.2% ate junk food daily. Human communities that inhabit the political borders live a transitional life, which is due to several socio-political and geo-climatic factors. The current cross-cultural ethnomedicinal study was conducted at the highly elevated Pakistan-India borders of the Western Himalayas in order to address the medicinal flora and folk knowledge of Balti and Shina communities. Ethnobotanical field surveys were conducted from May 2021 to September 2022. We used semi-structured interviews in order to collect the ethnomedicinal data. The collected data was analyzed using the relative frequency of the citations, use value, and Venn diagrams. A total of 140 interviews were conducted, which comprised of 90 (64.28%) Baltis and 50 (35.71%) Shinas. The interviews recorded 60 medicinal plant species that belong to 56 genera and 35 families. Asteraceae (5 spp.), Lamiaceae (5 spp.), and Apiaceae (4 spp.) were the families that were the most represented. These medicinally valued plants were being used for 55 health issues that are related to different body systems. Delphinium brunonianum, Thymus linearis, Hymenolaena candollei, Corydalis adiantifolia, and Seriphidium brevifolium were medicinal taxa with maximum RFCs and UV. The Baltis have comparatively more ethnomedicinal knowledge than the Shinas. The Baltis commonly used 22 (36.66%) species, which 34 (56.66%) were exclusive to the Baltis and 4 (6.66%) to the Shinas. Both ethnic groups collectively hold significant ethnobotanical knowledge that demands the preservation of risked folk knowledge, which is due to uncertain border situations, outmigration, and permeating allopathic drugs.

Introduction: With the advent of COVID-19 pandemic there has been a rapid shift in the mode of delivering education. A swift transition from place-based offline classes to virtual online learning platforms has emerged during the pandemic. The present study explored the acceptance, perceptions and preferences of blended learning among medical undergraduate students. Methods: MBBS undergraduate students of second and final professional (Part I & II) phases from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU, Aligarh, UP were enrolled in the study. We studied acceptance, perception and preferences regarding blended mode of learning of MBBS students using online Google Form. Semi structured questionnaire was drafted by the research team, based on thorough and critical review of pertinent literature and other similar survey tools. Each item was discussed separately and changes were made where required. Then, it was transformed to an online form through Google Forms. Results: Out of a total of 432 students, more than 3/4th of students (78.2%) believed that combined approach would lead to improvement in learning. Around half (53.6%) of the female students were relying predominantly on offline learning compared to 37.0% of male students (p = 0.004). Flexible schedule and personal convenience was reported as the most common benefit of online learning while lack of interaction with peers and connectivity issues were found to be the major disadvantages. Conclusion: Majority of the students echoed a positive attitude towards blended mode of teaching and learning. Medical education is largely demonstration and application based for acquiring skills. Therefore, a combined approach where the theoretical aspect of the curriculum is made online, might offer a more convenient, flexible and effective alternative way of teaching and learning. A bibliometric analysis of 349 scholarly documents published on the topic plant nativity and endemism from 1991–2022 was carried out using the ‘bibliometrix’ tool, developed through the R programming language. The results revealed a significant increase in the number of publications on plant nativity and endemism research since 1991. Of the total of 349 documents that were analyzed, 38 are single authored documents, and the average number of documents per author is 0.278. Each document has received an average of 33.67 citations, with 3.18 citations per year per document. The relationship between the number of authors and the number of articles that they have published follows a power-law distribution. Based on Bradford’s law, only eight were found to be the core sources. Mexico, followed by the USA, has produced the highest number of documents on plant nativity and endemism. The present study suggests that it is necessary to categorize data on endemism by floristic provinces, not by political subdivisions. Synecological studies are also needed, since endemic plants exist within communities. Models that accurately predict levels of endemism on the basis of easily measurable environmental variables should be useful for the rapid identification of endemic-rich areas. Recognition of the importance of plant endemism and the implementation of conservation measures is crucial for preserving biodiversity hotspots. Both in situ and ex situ conservation efforts are essential for protecting endemic species and preventing their extinction. By integrating these approaches, we can contribute to the long-term conservation and management of endemic plant species.

The efficient operation of power-electronic-based systems heavily relies on the reliability and longevity of battery-powered systems. An accurate prediction of the remaining useful life (RUL) of batteries is essential for their effective maintenance, reliability, and safety. However, traditional RUL prediction methods and deep learning-based approaches face challenges in managing battery degradation processes, such as achieving robust prediction performance, to ensure scalability and computational efficiency. There is a need to develop adaptable models that can generalize across different battery types that operate in diverse operational environments. To solve these issues, this research work proposes a TransRUL model to enhance battery RUL prediction. The proposed model incorporates advanced approaches of a time series transformer using a dual encoder with integration positional encoding and multi-head attention. This research utilized data collected by the Centre for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) on CS_2-type lithium-ion batteries that spanned four groups that used a sliding window technique to generate features and labels. The experimental results demonstrate that TransRUL obtained superior performance as compared with other methods in terms of the following evaluation metrics: mean absolute error (MAE), root-mean-squared error (RMSE), and R2 values. The efficient computational power of the TransRUL model will facilitate the real-time prediction of the RUL, which is vital for power-electronic-based appliances. This research highlights the potential of the TransRUL model, which significantly enhances the accuracy of battery RUL prediction and additionally improves the management and control of battery-based systems.

Accident rates in academic laboratories are increasing rapidly day to day. The incorporation of complex activities with the inclusion of modern technologies and human behavior during experiments often makes it difficult to manage health and safety risks. Failure modes and effect analysis (FMEA) is widely used risk assessment technique that consider (03) risk parameters which include severity (S), occurrence (O), and detection (D), and calculate a risk priority number (R.P.N), which facilitates in failure modes ranking. However, there are some shortcomings associated with this method. This study aims to propose a framework for prioritizing the health and safety risks (failure modes) in an experiment using a widely used Multi-criteria decision-making method, i.e., Fuzzy VIKOR supported by criteria objective weights determined using the Shannon entropy concept. The fuzzy VIKOR method is employed to rank the failure modes based on the maxi group utility and the minimum individual regret. In this study, an experiment related to preparing rock core samples is taken as an example for implementing the proposed technique. Core sample preparation is one of the most common and dangerous experiments in the petroleum industry. The performance of the experiment allows rock sample preparation of desired shape and size to be tested for its hydrocarbon producing potential. The final results indicate that applying the proposed method in a fuzzy environment can efficiently prioritize the experiment’s health and safety risks, which is further considered for the implementation of control measure prioritization. The proposed approach can be applied to other experiments with the same or different domains.

The invasion of species in new regions depends on multiple factors, especially, the prevailing environmental factors. The environmental conditions are essential to understand for planning effective management strategies related to invasive species. Little is known about Cannabis as an established invasive weed. We hypothesized that the successful establishment of this invading species is influenced by the environmental variables; however, some of them have a much stronger influence than the others. Quantitative ecological methods were adopted for sampling the habitats invaded by Cannabis sativa, in a total of 165 quadrats. Soil samples were collected for soil analyses from each of those quadrat. Ecological and statistical approaches including Structure Equation Modeling (SEM) procedures were applied to evaluate the impact of environmental factors, ecological interrelationships, and the resultant invasiveness of the C. sativa. Our findings indicate that elevation, temperature, humidity, anthropogenic pressure, physio-chemical prperties of soil and habitat degradation play significant roles in determining the distribution and abundance of C. sativa. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the parameters further clarifies that elevation is the most important driver in explaining the successful establishment of the invader species with a 30.1% variance. Structural equation modeling further confirms the significant role played by elevation, which not only directly affects the abundance of Cannabis but also indirectly influences other variables such as anthropogenic pressure, temperature, and humidity etc. However, the invasion of C. sativa is less affected by soil saturation pH, electrical conductivity, phosphorous, potassium, and CaCO3. Our study provides valuable scientific information that could be used for the early detection of invasive species at the early stage of invasion and in devising policies for their management and control.

Mineral coatings have the ability to tackle the most common degradation processes (wear and corrosion) in industries at amazing ‘quality to cost’ ratio, as compared to synthetic ceramics. In the current study, concentrated natural chromite with 55 wt.% Chromium oxide (Cr2O3) is deposited on steel substrate through High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) and Atmospheric plasma spray (APS) techniques. Effect of deposition processes and Cr2O3 enrichment on microstructure, hardness, tribological and electrochemical behavior of coatings is studied. Tribological tests were performed using pin-on-disc setup, coatings deposited with APS have shown excellent wear resistance behavior as compared to HVOF coating. Owing to the brittle nature of chromite coatings, they were worn by abrasive wear irrespective of the deposition process. Electrochemical behavior of coatings is evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5% NaCl solution. APS and HVOF coatings have exhibited very high protective efficiency of 93 and 88% respectively, against steel substrate. Equivalent electrical circuit (EEC) based on EIS results has also been conceptualized and verified with ZSimpWin analysis software. Established EEC has illustrated capacitive behavior due to the protective oxide nature of coatings. Despite having relatively higher porosities in APS coatings, they display an excellent potential for wear and corrosion resistant applications. Results revealed that hardness, compactness, tribological and corrosion performance of chromite coatings have been substantially improved due to higher Cr2O3 content.

Abstract In this study, we investigated whether zerumbone (ZBN), ellagic acid (ELA) and quercetin (QCT), the plant-derived components, can modulate the role of COX-3 or cytokines liable in arthritic disorder. Initially, the effect of ZBN, ELA, and QCT on inflammatory process was investigated using in-vitro models. This paper presents a novel robust output feedback control that simultaneously performs both stabilization and trajectory tracking for a class of underactuated nonholonomic systems despite model uncertainties, external disturbance, and the absence of velocity measurement. To solve this challenging problem, a generalized normal form has been successfully created by employing an input–output feedback linearization approach and a change in coordinates (diffeomorphism). This research mainly focuses on the stabilization problem of nonholonomic systems that can be transformed to a normal form and pose several challenges, including (i) a nontriangular normal form, (ii) the internal dynamics of the system are non-affine in control, and (iii) the zero dynamics of the system are not in minimum phase. The proposed scheme utilizes combined backstepping and sliding mode control (SMC) techniques. Furthermore, the full-order high gain observer (HGO) has been developed to estimate the derivative of output functions and internal dynamics. Then, full-order HGO and the backstepping SMC have been integrated to synthesize a robust output feedback controller. A differential-drive type (2,0) the wheeled mobile robot has been considered as an example to support the theoretical results. The simulation results demonstrate that the backstepping SMC exhibits robustness against bounded uncertainties.

Abstract Preclinical ischemic stroke studies extensively utilize the intraluminal suture method of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo). General anesthesia administration is an essential step for MCAo, but anesthetic agents can lead to adverse effects causing death and making a considerable impact on inducing cerebral ischemia. The purpose of this study was to comparatively assess the effect of isoflurane and xylazine on transient cerebral ischemia in a mouse model of MCAo. Twenty animals were randomly divided into four groups: sham group (no MCAo), control group (MCAo under isoflurane, no agent till reperfusion), isoflurane group (MCAo under isoflurane continued till reperfusion), xylazine group (MCAo under isoflurane, and administration of xylazine till reperfusion). The survival rate, brain infarct volume, and neurologic deficits were studied to assess the effect of isoflurane and xylazine on the stroke model. Our results showed that the body weight showed statistically significant change before and 24 h after surgery in the control and Isoflurane groups, but no difference in the Xylazine group. Also, the survival rate, brain infarct volume, and neurologic deficits were slightly reduced in the isoflurane group at 24 h after reperfusion injury. However, the xylazine and control groups showed similar BIV and neurologic deficits. Interestingly, a high survival rate was observed in the xylazine group. Our results indicate that the modified method of inhalation anesthetics combined with xylazine can reduce the risk of mortality and develop a reproducible MCAo model with predictable brain ischemia. In addition, extended isoflurane anesthesia after MCAo is associated with the risk of mortality.

Microneedle (MN) patches overcome the drawbacks associated with parenteral route (risk of needle-prick injury, costly supervised administration, production of biohazardous waste) and deliver vaccines transcutaneously into general circulation. This study aimed to summarise three case studies relating to MN patch mediated vaccine delivery. Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG), tetanus toxoid (TT) and rabies vaccine loaded patches were prepared using sodium alginate (SA), polyvinyl pyrollidone (PVP)/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and PVP/hyaluronic acid (HA), respectively. MNs were evaluated for morphology, folding endurance, swelling and insertion ability. In-vivo immunogenic activity was assessed by recording several parameters e.g., immunoglobulin G (IgG), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), T-cell (CD4+ and CD8+) and rabies virus specific antibody count following MN patch application. MNs, displaying sharp tips and uniform surface, showed a folding endurance and swelling of ≥200 and ~70%, respectively indicating integrity and fluid uptake ability. MNs successfully penetrated into the skin simulant parafilm. MNs treated groups exhibited a significant increase in the IgG, IFN-γ, CD4+, CD8+, rabies virus specific antibody counts when compared to the control (untreated) groups and the results were comparable with standard intramuscular injection. Thus, MN patches can be used for transcutaneous vaccine delivery.

Abstract The detection of chemiluminescence from various radicals and molecules in a hydrocarbon flame can provide valuable information on the rate of local heat release, combustion stability, and combustion completeness. In this study, chemiluminescence from the combustion process is detected using a high-speed color camera within the broadband spectrum of visible light. Whereon, a novel hyperspectral reconstruction approach based on the physically plausible spectral reconstruction (PPSR) is employed to reconstruct the spectral chemiluminescence signals from 400 to 700 nm with a resolution of 10 nm to provide 31 different spectral channels. The reconstructed key chemiluminescence signals (e.g., CH*, CH2O*, C2*, and CO2*) from the color images are further analyzed to characterize the chemical kinetics and combustion processes under engine conditions. The spectral chemiluminescence evolution with engine crank angle is identified to comprehend the effect of H2 fraction on flame characteristics and combustion kinetics. Additionally, in this study, a detailed kinetic mechanism is adopted to deepen the theoretical understanding and describe the spectral chemiluminescence from H2/CH4 and H2/CH4/n-dodecane flames at relevant conditions for various species including OH*, CH*, C2*, and CO2*. The results indicate that the PPSR is an adequately reliable approach to reconstructing spectral wavelengths based on chemiluminescence signals from the color images, which can potentially provide qualitative information about the evolution of various species during combustion. Here, the reconstructed chemiluminescence images show less than 1% errors compared to the raw images in red, green, and blue channels. Furthermore, the reconstructed chemiluminescence trends of CH*, CH2O*, C2*, and CO2* show a good agreement with the detailed kinetics 0D simulation.

Since the Palaeozoic era, fire as a potent driver of environmental changes, has dramatically shaped the terrestrial ecosystems. Fire affects soil structure and composition, which in turn affects the floral diversity of an area. This research work aims to examine the impact of fire on vegetation and the physicochemical nature of the soil in fire-affected and fire-free sites across the Mahaban and the surrounding forests, Swabi District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Quadrat quantitative ecological techniques were used for vegetation sampling in fire-free and fire-affected sites. In total, 219 plant species belonging to 173 genera and 70 families were recorded. Among the 219 plant species, 173 species were recorded from fire-free sites and the remaining 122 species were from fire-affected sites. The incidence of fire results in elevated organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and lower calcium carbonate concentrations in the soil. The greatest species richness and evenness were observed across the fire-free sites. Our study concludes that the influence of edaphic and topographic factors on species richness varies between fire-affected and fire-free sites. Fire has significantly altered the nutrient availability in the studied region, and this is confirmed by soil analysis and vegetation research. It is suggested that further research in the field of fire ecology can produce valuable insights.

Purpose: This paper conducts a review of the different research carried out recently on the behavior of non-structural elements (NSEs) and the life cycle assessment (LCA) during an earthquake. It focuses on the study conducted recently and identifies the gaps and way forward for future work. Methods: A systematic literature review was carried out among the different research works. The proposed literature review includes (i) identifying the recent research work using the keywords in available search engines, (ii) studying different research papers and selecting the relevant papers only, and (iii) vulnerability and LCA for NSEs and their research gaps. Results and discussions: A summary is given of the importance and type of NSEs under earthquakes, including life cycle cost assessment for NSE, environment life cycle assessment (ELCA) and social life cycle assessment (SLCA) for different facilities and the embodied energies. Conclusions and recommendations: This paper highlights the problems associated with NSEs. For new constructions, modifications to improve the performance of NSEs, particularly infill walls are under research, however for old buildings, their location is also vital. Numerical methods are performed using different tools available; however, implementation is a big challenge to economize the life cycle and its impact on the community.

Nanofinishing is the process by which ultrafine dispersion of nanomaterials is applied to a textile for the development of functionalities. The utilization of nanometal oxides as antimicrobial agents have shown a substantial antimicrobial property in cotton. In the present study, previously synthesized powder containing ZnO nanoflowers (ZnO NFs) was characterized for morphology, surface composition, roughness, and charge using Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), Atomic force microscopy(AFM) and Zeta potential. Optical properties of crystalline ZnO were determined by Photoluminescence (PL), Diffused reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS), and bandgap energy determination. Highly crystalline, ZnO NFs bearing crystal defects and high surface charge were loaded onto the pristine cotton by a dip coating method using Triton X-100 as dispersant and iSys MTX fabric binder. The pristine cotton fabric of 125 g/m2 was nano finished by loading 20,42 and 58 µg/cm2 (1–3 dip cycles) ZnO NFs respectively. The loading of ZnO NFs onto the surface of cotton fabric was confirmed by SEM and used for antibacterial activity against E. coli as a photocatalytic reactor. The prepared samples were irradiated with a UV lamp of λmax = 254 nm (15 min, 30 min, 45 min) and D65 artificial sunlight (60 min, 120 min, 180 min) to investigate their photocatalytic activity against pathogenic E. coli using modified Breed Smear’s method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of ZnO NFs@ cotton were determined as 19.53 µg/ml and 39.06 µg/ml respectively after exposure to UV light. After exposure to sunlight MIC and MBC observed were higher i.e. 156.25 µg/ml and 312.5 µg/ml respectively showing lesser activity in sunlight as compared to ionizing UV radiations. To verify the photocatalytic activity, hydroxyl radicals generated by ZnO NFs@ cotton were also determinedtime-resolved PL on exposure to a UV lamp and D65 artificial sunlight. This nano-finished cotton is a promising candidate to be used as a medical textile with high antibacterial activity even after 20 washing cycles with only a 5% decrease in efficiency.

Around the globe, natural reserves are depleting consistently. In this undeniable situation, it has become essential to find out substitute resources for the ingredients of cement concrete. To encounter this issue, the present study aims to utilize electronic waste (e-waste) as a substitute source of natural aggregates in the production of concrete. In this experimental-based investigation, shredded e-waste is utilized as a partial replacement of coarse aggregate (CA) in concrete with a constant volume replacement of 30% to study the mechanical, durability, and microstructural features. However, to cope with the poor mechanical efficiency, and brittleness of e-waste concrete, polypropylene fibers (PPF) were utilized in concrete. The testing results show that the mechanical efficiency of concrete was reduced by the replacement of natural CA with e-waste aggregate. Fibrous materials have a better impact on the mechanical efficiency of e-waste concrete. The incorporation of 0.5% dosage of PPF, as by volume fraction, in concrete, resulted in an increment in flexural strength and splitting tensile strength (STS) values of about 42% and 78%, respectively. However, the permeability-based durability parameters (sorptivity coefficient, chloride penetration, and porosity) are inversely influenced by an enhanced dosage of PPF. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the incorporation of PPF resulted in improved microstructure while the incorporation of e-waste aggregates led to a weak internal matrix. The significance of this research work is the reduction of elevated consumption of natural resources in concrete production accompanied by the improvement in the efficiency of e-waste aggregate concrete by the incorporation of a suitable dosage of fiber reinforcement to make it more practical and sustainable.

Abstract Vegetation structures and dynamics are the result of interactions between abiotic and biotic factors in an ecosystem. The present study was designed to investigate vegetation structure and species diversity along various environmental variables in the Yakhtangay Hills of the Hindu-Himalayan Mountain Pakistan, by using multivariate statistical analysis. Quadrat quantitative method was used for the sampling of vegetation. PC-ORD version 5 software was used to classify the vegetation into different plants communities using cluster analysis. The results of regression analysis among various edaphic variables shows that soil organic matter, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, CaCO3 and moisture contents shows a significant positive correlation with species abundance, while the soil pH has inverse relationship with plant species abundance. Similarly, species richness increases with increase in soil organic matter, CaCO3 and moisture contents, while decrease with increase in soil pH, total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity (p < 0.05). The vegetation was classified into four major plant communities and their respective indicators were identified using indicator species analysis. Indicator species analysis reflects the indicators of the study area are mostly the indicators to the Himalayan or moist temperate ecosystem. These indicators could be considered for micro-habitat conservation and respective ecosystem management plans not only in the study area but also in other region with similar sort of environmental conditions.

This study focuses on the numerical illustration of bubble growth and addresses the inherent interface deformation problem associated with phase change in the Volume of Fluid (VOF) interface tracking method. To avoid the interface deformation, this study proposes a cell alternation algorithm that could simulate bubble growth with a sharp interface. The proposed algorithm identifies two types of cells near the vicinity of the interface, which include the primary-interface-cell and small-interface-cell. This algorithm computes mass transfer associated with a phase change at the primary interface cell and relocates it to a nearby cell full of vapor. The predictive accuracy of the proposed method is assessed with a one-dimensional Stefan phase change problem. In the case of the Stefan phase change problem, the results of simulations agree well with the results of the theoretical solution, and the predictive accuracy increases as the grid are refined. In addition, the proposed method is verified with two engineering problems which include bubble growth on a constant temperature surface and bubble growth in a microchannel. The simulation results show a good agreement with the results of the experiment in terms of bubble growth rate, bubble shape, and other parameters associated with experiment. Also, an insight into the temperature and velocity fields is provided in simulation which cannot be achieved directly through experiment.

Due to the aromatase enzyme’s involvement in estrogen biosynthesis, aromatase inhibitors have emerged as the preferred treatment for postmenopausal women with ER+ breast cancer. Using computational chemistry tools, we investigate how the human placental aromatase cytochrome P450 interacts with various phorbols with distinct chains at C-12, C-13, and C-20, as well as the well-known aromatase inhibitors anastrozole, exemestane, and letrozole. To identify phorbol-aromatase interactions, we performed a protein–ligand docking using the structures of our ligands and proteins using the Flare software (version 2.0, Cresset Software, Litlington, UK). These preliminary findings show that the phorbols considered (P-12,13-diAcPh, P-12,13-diiBu, P-12AcPh-13iBu, P-12Ang-13iBu, P-20Ac-12AcPh-13iBu and P-20Ac-12Ang-13iBu) had the highest binding energies in comparison with the commercially available aromatase inhibitors (anastrozole, letrozole, exemestane) used in this study. A subset of the previously described binding residues of testosterone (TST), the endogenous ligand, were also found to be responsible for the phorbol diesters’ binding to the aromatase enzyme, as demonstrated by the findings. This further suggests that the phorbol diesters can bind efficiently to CYP19A1 and may be able to alter its activity because they had higher binding energies than the commercially available drugs.

Abstract This work is used to design a novel robust optimization control law augmented with Robust Generalized Dynamic Inversion (RGDI) for continuous varying perturbations in the Twin Rotor MIMO System (TRMS). The perturbations like coupling effect, un-known states, gyroscopic disturbance torque, parametric uncertainties and parametric disturbances are considered as unwanted signal which should be optimized by an efficient controller. The variable structured systems like the TRMS (prototype) have great focus due to its high computational cost with a higher order non-linear behavior. The RGDI based controller designed to remove nonlinear dynamics as well as to avoid singularity issue with the augmentation of stability based mathematical operations (lyapunov stability analysis, controllability and observability matrices ) in the presence of considered perturbations during implementation. In this paper, we develop estimation of state deviation calculation between control angles and desired angles known as Euclidean error norm. The next step was to design RGDI based controller [Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and $${H_\infty }$$ H ∞ optimization] to minimize considered perturbations as well as the computational cost. The sharp (rapid) chattering phenomena in RGDI based SMC reduce the actuators performance that goes towards the failure of actuators. While the RGDI based $${H_\infty }$$ H ∞ optimization overcome the computational cost and minimizes $${H_\infty }$$ H ∞ norm that’s guaranteeing the robust stability as well as robust performance. The robustness of the optimization control technique validated by taking its worst case via MATLAB-Simulation. A real-time implementation applied to evaluate the worth of novel dynamic approach.

Introduction: There has been limited research conducted on the identifications/methodological approaches of using plant species as indicators of the presence of economically, important mineral resources. Objectives: This study set out to answer the following questions (1) Do specific plant species and species assemblages indicate the presence of mineral deposits? and (2) if yes, then what sort of ecological, experimental, and statistical procedures could be employed to identify such indicators? Methods: Keeping in mind these questions, the vegetation of subtropical mineral mines sites in northern Pakistan were evaluated using Indicator Species Analysis (ISA), Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Results: A total of 105 plant species belonging to 95 genera and 43 families were recorded from the three mining regions. CA and TWCA classified all the stations and plants into three major mining zones, corresponding to the presence of marble, coal, and chromite, based on Jaccard distance and Ward’s linkage methods. This comprehended the following indicator species: Ficus carica, Isodon rugosus and Ajuga parviflora (marble indicators); Olea ferruginea, Gymnosporia royleana and Dicliptera bupleuroides (coal indicators); and Acacia nilotica, Rhazya stricta and Aristida adscensionis (chromite indicators) based on calculated Indicator Values (IV). These indicators were reconfirmed by CCA and SEM analysis. Conclusion: It was concluded that ISA is one of the best techniques for the identification/selection of plant indicator species, followed by reconfirmation via CCA and SEM analysis. In addition to establishing a robust approach to identifying plant indicator species, our results could have application in mineral prospecting and detection.

Objective: To determine the mean length of hospital stay of term and late preterm infants with transient tachypnea of the newborn treated with intravenous Furosemide compared to the Control Group. Study Design: Quasi-experimental study. Place and Duration of Study: Combined Military Hospital, Kharian, from Apr to Oct 2016. Methodology: All term and late preterm infants with transient tachypnea of new-borns were included in the study. One Group was given IV Furosemide, and the other was taken as control. Two doses of Furosemide were administered IV at 1 mg/kg 12 hours apart. The Control Group were given normal saline 01 ml/kg as a placebo 12 hours apart. Results: It was found that the duration of tachypnea in the Study-Group was less than that of the Control-Group (49.4±7.4 h vs 76.7±4.5h, p-value

This review analyzes methods for controlling plant viral infection. The high harmfulness of viral diseases and the peculiarities of viral pathogenesis impose special requirements regarding developing methods to prevent phytoviruses. The control of viral infection is complicated by the rapid evolution, variability of viruses, and the peculiarities of their pathogenesis. Viral infection in plants is a complex interdependent process. The creation of transgenic varieties has caused much hope in the fight against viral pathogens. The disadvantages of genetically engineered approaches include the fact that the resistance gained is often highly specific and short-lived, and there are bans in many countries on the use of transgenic varieties. Modern prevention methods, diagnosis, and recovery of planting material are at the forefront of the fight against viral infection. The main techniques used for the healing of virus-infected plants include the apical meristem method, which is combined with thermotherapy and chemotherapy. These methods represent a single biotechnological complex method of plant recovery from viruses in vitro culture. It widely uses this method for obtaining non-virus planting material for various crops. The disadvantages of the tissue culture-based method of health improvement include the possibility of self-clonal variations resulting from the long-term cultivation of plants under in vitro conditions. The possibilities of increasing plant resistance by stimulating their immune system have expanded, which results from the in-depth study of the molecular and genetic bases of plant resistance toward viruses and the investigation of the mechanisms of induction of protective reactions in the plant organism. The existing methods of phytovirus control are ambiguous and require additional research. Further study of the genetic, biochemical, and physiological features of viral pathogenesis and the development of a strategy to increase plant resistance to viruses will allow a new level of phytovirus infection control to be reached.

Heavy metal concentrations exceeding permissible limits threaten human life, plant life, and all other life forms. Different natural and anthropogenic activities emit toxic heavy metals in the soil, air, and water. Plants consume toxic heavy metals from their roots and foliar part inside the plant. Heavy metals may interfere with various aspects of the plants, such as biochemistry, bio-molecules, and physiological processes, which usually translate into morphological and anatomical changes. They use various strategies to deal with the toxic effects of heavy metal contamination. Some of these strategies include restricting heavy metals to the cell wall, vascular sequestration, and synthesis of various biochemical compounds, such as phyto-chelators and organic acids, to bind the free moving heavy metal ions so that the toxic effects are minimized. This review focuses on several aspects of genetics, molecular, and cell signaling levels, which integrate to produce a coordinated response to heavy metal toxicity and interpret the exact strategies behind the tolerance of heavy metals stress. It is suggested that various aspects of some model plant species must be thoroughly studied to comprehend the approaches of heavy metal tolerance to put that knowledge into practical use.

This research work focuses on a Near-Infra-Red (NIR) finger-images-based multimodal biometric system based on Finger Texture and Finger Vein biometrics. The individual results of the biometric characteristics are fused using a fuzzy system, and the final identification result is achieved. Experiments are performed for three different databases, i.e., the Near-Infra-Red Hand Images (NIRHI), Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU) and University of Twente Finger Vein Pattern (UTFVP) databases. First, the Finger Texture biometric employs an efficient texture feature extracting algorithm, i.e., Linear Binary Pattern. Then, the classification is performed using Support Vector Machine, a proven machine learning classification algorithm. Second, the transfer learning of pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is performed for the Finger Vein biometric, employing two approaches. The three selected CNNs are AlexNet, VGG16 and VGG19. In Approach 1, before feeding the images for the training of the CNN, the necessary preprocessing of NIR images is performed. In Approach 2, before the pre-processing step, image intensity optimization is also employed to regularize the image intensity. NIRHI outperforms HKPU and UTFVP for both of the modalities of focus, in a unimodal setup as well as in a multimodal one. The proposed multimodal biometric system demonstrates a better overall identification accuracy of 99.62% in comparison with 99.51% and 99.50% reported in the recent state-of-the-art systems.

Thorax disease is a life-threatening disease caused by bacterial infections that occur in the lungs. It could be deadly if not treated at the right time, so early diagnosis of thoracic diseases is vital. The suggested study can assist radiologists in more swiftly diagnosing thorax disorders and in the rapid airport screening of patients with a thorax disease, such as pneumonia. This paper focuses on automatically detecting and localizing thorax disease using chest X-ray images. It provides accurate detection and localization using DenseNet-121 which is foundation of our proposed framework, called Z-Net. The proposed framework utilizes the weighted cross-entropy loss function (W-CEL) that manages class imbalance issue in the ChestX-ray14 dataset, which helped in achieving the highest performance as compared to the previous models. The 112,120 images contained in the ChestX-ray14 dataset (60,412 images are normal, and the rest contain thorax diseases) were preprocessed and then trained for classification and localization. This work uses computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system that supports development of highly accurate and precise computer-aided systems. We aim to develop a CAD system using a deep learning approach. Our quantitative results show high AUC scores in comparison with the latest research works. The proposed approach achieved the highest mean AUC score of 85.8%. This is the highest accuracy documented in the literature for any related model.

The study was aimed at divulging an eco-friendly antimicrobial finish on 100 % silk woven fabric. The leaves’ extract of Azadirachata indica, Butea monosperma and Litche chinensis were used as the development of eco-friendly antimicrobial finish. The antimicrobial property and comfort related property were checked before and after applying antimicrobial finish. In comfort related property absorbency & air permeability were checked. The ASTEM E2149 Shake Flask method was used to check antimicrobial finish and AATCC method was used for checking fabric property. One way ANOVA statistical test was applied for analysis of results. The FTIR and SEM results showed the presences of finish on fabrics. In comfort related property, absorbency and air permeability was increased. The results showed that antimicrobial finish made 100% reduction against microorganism up to 25 washes which can be used in making reusable masks fight against COVID- 19.

Diarrhea is a severe bovine disease, globally prevalent in farm animals with a decrease in milk production and a low fertility rate. Cryptosporidium spp. are important zoonotic agents of bovine diarrhea. Piezoelectric materials that can effectively convert natural mechanical energy into electrical energy without time and space constraints have been widely applied for energy harvesting and conversion. The piezocomposites with high piezoelectricity and flexibility have shown great promise for renewable electric energy generation that can power implantable and wearable electronics. This minireview aims to summarize the recent progress of the piezocomposites with different composite structures, as well as the role of the theoretical understandings and designs in the development of new piezoelectric nanogenerator materials. Thereinto, the most common composite structural types (0-3, 1-3, and 3-3) have been discussed systematically. Several strategies for high output performance of piezocomposites are also proposed on the basis of current experimental and simulation results. Finally, the review concludes with perspectives on the future design of flexible piezoelectric nanocomposites for energy harvesters.

Women entrepreneurs are significant contributors to the economic development of any country and their role becomes more vital in improving the economic condition of developing countries. This highlights the important role of women-owned small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and their entrepreneurial success. Therefore, the current study extends the entrepreneurship literature by examining the effects of factors like personality traits (PT), motivation and commitment (MC), availability of financial resources (AFR), and government support (GS) on entrepreneurial success (ES) of women-owned SMEs. Using a purposive sampling technique data from 255 women-owned SMEs were collected. A multi-analytical approach was employed to analyze the data. The Structural equation modeling (SEM) results indicated that PT, MC, AFR, and GS have a direct effect of ES whereas MC also mediated the link between PT and ES, and the results reveal that in presence of MC the effects of PT on ES become more significant. SEM results revealed that PT and AFR are the most important factors related to entrepreneurial success. On the contrary, ANN analysis revealed that “motivation and commitment” is the most influencing factor. These findings can guide business practitioners and policymakers in the envisioned strategy formulation to encourage women entrepreneurs who can contribute to their country’s sustainable economic growth.

A high amount of CO2 causes numerous health effects, including headaches, restlessness, difficulty in breathing, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, asphyxia, and dizziness. This issue of increasing atmospheric CO2 can only be solved via above-ground and below-ground carbon sequestration (CS). This study was designed to determine the relationship between CS with the crown area (CA), diameter at breast height (DBH), height (H), species richness (SR), and elevation in different forest types of Pakistan with the following specific objectives: (1) to quantify the direct and indirect relationship of carbon sequestration with CA, DBH, H, and SR in various natural forest types and (2) to evaluate the effect of elevation on the trees functional traits and resultant CS. We used the linear structural equation model (SEM) for each conceptual model. Our results confirmed that the highest CS potential was recorded for dry temperate conifer forests (DTCF) i.e., 52.67%, followed by moist temperate mix forests (MTMF) and sub-tropical broad-leaved forests (STBLF). The SEM further described the carbon sequestration variation, i.e., 57, 32, 19, and 16% under the influence of CA (β = 0.90 and P-value < 0.001), H (β = 0.13 and p-value = 0.05), DBH (β = 0.07 and p-value = 0.005), and SR (β = −0.55 and p-value = 0.001), respectively. The individual direct effect of SR on carbon sequestration has been negative and significant. At the same time, the separate effect of CA, DBH, and H had a positive and significant effect on carbon sequestration. The remaining 20% of CS variations are indirectly influenced by elevation. This means that elevation affects carbon sequestration indirectly through CA, DBH, H, and SR, i.e., β = 0.133 and P-value < 0.166, followed by β = 0.531 and P-value < 0.001, β = 0.007 and P-value < 0.399, and β = −0.32 and P-value < 0.001, respectively. It is concluded that abiotic factors mainly determined carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems along with the elevation gradients in Pakistan. Quantifying the role of various forest types in carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction leads to improved air quality, which positively impacts human health. This is an imperative and novel study that links the dynamics of the biosphere and atmosphere.

Staphylococcus aureus is recognized as commensal as well as opportunistic pathogen of humans and animals. Methicillin resistant strain of S. aureus (MRSA) has emerged as a major pathogen in hospitals, community and veterinary settings that compromises the public health and livestock production. MRSA basically emerged from MSSA after acquiring SCCmec element through gene transfer containing mecA gene responsible for encoding PBP-2α. This protein renders the MRSA resistant to most of the β-lactam antibiotics. Due to the continuous increasing prevalence and transmission of MRSA in hospitals, community and veterinary settings posing a major threat to public health. Furthermore, high pathogenicity of MRSA due to a number of virulence factors produced by S. aureus along with antibiotic resistance help to breach the immunity of host and responsible for causing severe infections in humans and animals. The clinical manifestations of MRSA consist of skin and soft tissues infection to bacteremia, septicemia, toxic shock, and scalded skin syndrome. Moreover, due to the increasing resistance of MRSA to number of antibiotics, there is need to approach alternatives ways to overcome economic as well as human losses. This review is going to discuss various aspects of MRSA starting from emergence, transmission, epidemiology, pathophysiology, disease patterns in hosts, novel treatment, and control strategies.

With increased interest in 6G (6th Generation) cellular networks that can support intelligently small-cell communication will result in effective device-to-device (D2D) communication. High throughput requirement in 5G/6G cellular technology requires each device to act as intelligent transmission relays. Inclusion of such intelligence relays and support of quantum computing at D2D may compromise existing security mechanisms and may lead towards primitive attacks such as impersonation attack, rouge device attack, replay attack, MITM attack, and DoS attack. Thus, an effective yet lightweight security scheme is required that can support existing low computation devices and can address the challenges that 5G/6G poses. This paper proposes a Lightweight ECC (elliptic curve cryptography)-based Multifactor Authentication Protocol (LEMAP) for miniaturized mobile devices. LEMAP is the extension of our previous published work TLwS (trust-based lightweight security scheme) which utilizes ECC with Elgamal for achieving lightweight security protocol, confidentiality, integrity, and non-repudiation. Multi-factor Authentication is based on OTP (Biometrics, random number), timestamp, challenge, and password. This scheme has mitigated the above-mentioned attacks with significantly lower computation cost, communication cost, and authentication overhead. We have proven the correctness of the scheme using widely accepted Burrows-Abadi-Needham (BAN) logic and analyzed the performance of the scheme by using a simulator. The security analysis of the scheme has been conducted using the Discrete Logarithm Problem to verify any quantum attack possibility. The proposed scheme works well for 5G/6G cellular networks for single and multihop scenarios.

Abstract Objective The use of benchtop metabolic profiling technology based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was evaluated in a small cohort of cats with a view to applying this as a viable and rapid metabolic tool to support clinical decision making. Results Urinary metabolites were analysed from four subjects consisting of two healthy controls and two chronic kidney disease (CKD) IRIS stage 2 cases. The study identified 15 metabolites in cats with CKD that were different from the controls. Among them were acetate, creatinine, citrate, taurine, glycine, serine and threonine. Benchtop NMR technology is capable of distinguishing between chronic kidney disease case and control samples in a pilot feline cohort based on metabolic profile. We offer perspectives on the further development of this pilot work and the potential of the technology, when combined with sample databases and computational intelligence techniques to offer a clinical decision support tool not only for cases of renal disease but other metabolic conditions in the future.

Abstract Electronic beam steering is an essential feature of state-of-the-art radar systems. Conventional phased array (PA) radars with fixed carrier frequencies are well-known for electronically steering their beam with high directivity. However, the resulting beampattern is angle-dependent but range-independent. Recently, a new electronic beam steering concept, referred to as frequency diverse array (FDA) radar, has attracted increasing attention due to its unique range-angle dependent beampattern. More importantly, the FDA radar employs a small frequency increment across the array elements to achieve beam steering as a function of angle, range, and time. In this paper, we review the development of the FDA radar since its inception in 2006. Since the frequency offset attaches great importance in FDAs to determine the beampattern shape, initially much of the research and development were focused on designing the optimal frequency offsets for improved beampattern synthesis. Specifically, we analyze characteristics of the FDA beampattern synthesis using various frequency offsets. In addition to analyzing the FDA beampattern characteristics, this study also focuses on the neglected propagation process of the transmitted signals in the early FDA literature, and discuss the time-variant perspective of FDA beampatterns. Furthermore, FDA can also play a significant role in wireless communications, owing to its potential advantages over the conventional PAs. Therefore, we highlight its potential applications in wireless communication systems. Numerical simulations are implemented to illustrate the FDA beampattern characteristics with various frequency offset functions.

The demand for renewable energy sources is gradually escalating due to the spontaneously growing population and global economic development. The access to fossil fuels is gradually declining due to the limited available reserves. Hence, renewable energy resources, technology choice, and energy policy are always being revised due to the modernization of society. Meanwhile, the liquid energy sources such as methyl ester from locally produced vegetable oils are readily accepted by many countries globally, although it is currently being blended (up to 20%) with diesel. Oxides of nitrogen are the most substantial emissions from diesel engines produced due to high combustion temperature. The addition of alcohol in the fuel reduces the NOxformation since alcohols have high latent heat of evaporation. The present study’s primary purpose is to investigate the effect of different alcohol types on engine performance and emission characteristics. For this purpose, seven test fuels and neat diesel were used. The test fuels P20 (20% palm biodiesel with 70% neat diesel and 10% alcohol on a volume basis), D70P20E10, D70P20Pr10, D70P20B10, D70P20Pe10, D70P20H10 were prepared and tested on a single-cylinder, 4-stroke, DI-diesel engine at different speeds at 100 % load. The P20E10 ternary fuel blend illustrated the most practical combination of all the bioethanol-based blends, which considerably improves the BTE, BSFC and reduces NOxformation at high speed compared to other types of alcoholic fuel blends. Also, the P20E10 fuel blend improved the cloud point of neat diesel.

The water microbial contamination is very common and different techniques are in practice for the decontamination purpose. The advance oxidation processes are being employed to mortify pathogens polluting drinking water. Heterogeneous photocatalysis under sunlight irradiation is a cost effective and remarkably proficient method for water purification. Zinc Oxide (ZnO) is a biocompatible material that has promising photo–oxidant activity. In this study, ZnO has been synthesized using Aloe vera (Av) extract assisted with hydrothermal approach. The nano disc structure of ZnO was characterized by XRD SEM, TEM, AFM, EDX, and FTIR techniques. The optical properties of ZnO@Av NDs (nano discs) evaluated by DRS and PL revealed their sunlight harvesting capability, as the calculated band gap value was 2.8 eV. The surface area and surface charge were measured by BET (5.34 m2g-1) and Zeta potential (+7.46 mV). The antibacterial activity of ZnO@Av NDs was studied against Salmonella typhimurium as a function of various process variables i.e., photocatalyst loading, sunlight exposure time, and bacterial inoculum size. The bactericidal reaction parameters were optimized statistically by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) on exposure to direct sunlight (average solar flux was 650 KWh/m2) at pH 7. As optimized conditions, 100 μL initial inoculum concentration of S. typhimurium was treated with 60 μg/mL of ZnO@Av NDs suspension under sunlight irradiation of 5 h, antibacterial index obtained was 6.8. The MIC and MBC for ZnO@Av NDs against S. typhimurium were 50 μL and 100 μL, respectively. It has been observed that ZnO@Av NDs lower the optical density of water that contains S. typhimurium. The photocatalytic purification of water using ZnO@Av NDs is safe and cost-effective method under sunlight irradiation, which could possibly be employed for the wastewater purification.

This study assessed the floristic composition, biological spectrum, and phytogeographical elements of the Bin Dara western boundary of Pakistan. The flora consisted of 140 plant species belonging to 47 families. The most dominant family was Poaceae (with 14 species), followed by Asteraceae (11 species). The biological spectrum showed the therophytes (71 species, 50.71%) as the dominant life form class, followed by mega-phanerophytes (27 species, 19.28%), nano-phanerophytes (15 species, 10.71%), geophytes (10 species, 7.14%), chamaephytes (9 species, 6.42%), and hemi-cryptophytes (8 species, 5.71%). Leaf size classes comprised of nanophylls (48 species, 34.28%), microphylls (32 species, 22.85%), mesophylls (22 species, 15.71%), macrophylls (17 species, 12.14%), leptophylls (12 species, 8.57), megaphylls (8 species, 5.75%), and aphyllous (1 species, 0.71%). Cosmopolitan was the most prominent form of phytogeographic elements (with 17 species, 12.14%), followed by pantropical and Euro-Siberian Mediterranean Irano-Turanian (14 species, 10%) each. The pluriregional represented (13 species, 9.28%), Holarctic and Mediterranean Irano-Turanian (10 species, 7.14%), Irano-Turanian and Western Himalayan (9 species, 6.42%) each. It is recommended that further study is needed to map the vegetation, its indicators, and rare species that face a huge threat of endangerment.
