2. Measurement and Analysis of an Online Content Voting Network: A Case Study of Digg

Abstract

Emergence of online content voting networks allows users to share and rate content including social news, photos and videos. The basic idea behind online content voting networks is that aggregate user activities (e.g., submitting and rating content) makes high-quality content thrive through the unprecedented scale, high dynamics and divergent quality of user generated content (UGC). To better understand the nature and impact of online content voting networks, we have analyzed Digg, a popular online social news aggregator and rating website. Based on a large amount of data collected, we provide an in-depth study of Digg. In particular, we study structural properties of Digg social network, impact of social network properties on user digging activities and vice versa, distribution of user diggs, content promotion, and information filtering. We also provide insight into design of content promotion algorithms and recommendation-assisted content discovery. Abstract

In this study, sustainable engineered cementitious composites (ECC) exhibiting high tensile strength as well as high tensile strain capacity were successfully developed by incorporating polyethylene (PE) fiber, local recycled fine aggregate (RFA), and limestone calcined clay cement (LC3). The improvement in tensile strength and tensile ductility was attributed to the self-cementing properties of RFA as well as the pozzolanic reaction between calcined clay and cement. Carbonate aluminates were also generated owing to the reaction between calcium carbonate in limestone and the aluminates in both calcined clay and cement. The bond strength between fiber and matrix was also enhanced. At the age of 150 days, the tensile stress-strain curves of ECC containing LC3 and RFA shifted from a bilinear model to a trilinear model, and the hydrophobic PE fiber exhibited hydrophilic bonding performance when embedded in RFA-LC3-ECC matrix, which could be explained by the densified cementitious matrix as well as the refined pore structure of ECC. Moreover, the substitution of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) by LC3 resulted in energy consumption and equivalent CO2 emission reduction ratios of 13.61% and 30.34%, respectively, when the replacement ratio of LC3 is 35%. Therefore, PE fiber-reinforced RFA-LC3-ECC demonstrates excellent mechanical performance as well as considerable environmental benefits.

Abstract

The Gnutella with Efficient Search (GES) is presented by combining techniques from information retrieval (IR) algorithms, such as Vector Space Model (VSM) and relevance ranking algorithms, and peer-to-peer (P2P) computing to enhance search performance in terms of search efficiency and quality of search results. The results have shown that GES is efficient and even outperforms the centralized node clustering system SETS.

Abstract

Byline: Yingwu Zhu One hurdle to using peer-to-peer (P2P) networks as anonymising networks is churn. Node churn makes anonymous paths fragile and short-lived: failures of a relay node disrupt the path, resulting in message loss and communication failures. To make anonymous routing resilient to node failures, we take two steps: 1) we use a simple yet powerful idea based on message redundancy by erasure coding and path redundancy to mask node failures; 2) we base mix choices of a path on node lifetime prediction and choose stable nodes as relay nodes, thereby prolonging single path durability. We present an allocation of erasure-coded message segments among multiple paths that provides a guideline on how to maximise routing resilience upon different node availabilities in real-world systems. Via detailed simulations, we compare routing resilience of our approach and existing anonymity protocols, showing that our approach greatly improves routing resilience while consuming modest bandwidth.

40. Evaluating Mesh-based P2P Video-on-Demand Systems.

Abstract

Three stakeholders come into play in peer-to-peer (P2P) video-on-demand (VoD), namely peers/viewers, content providers and ISPs. Different design choices have been proposed to improve quality of user experience, to bring down content server bandwidth cost and to reduce ISP-unfriendly traffic. However, it is unclear whether the ability of these design choices to meet interests of one stakeholder comes at the expense of their ability to satisfy the other stakeholders. Yet, another question remains open for two different types of mesh-based P2P VoD protocols: How well do the regular P2P VoD protocol and the network coding-based P2P VoD protocol perform compared to each other? In this paper, we present a simple performance versus cost framework (PCF) to evaluate impact of different design choices. Via detailed PCF-based simulations, we compare the two P2P VoD protocols and show that the two protocols each has its own territory on which it excels at efficiency. 44. ENHANCING SEARCH PERFORMANCE IN PEER-TO-PEER NETWORKS

Abstract

In the past years, peer-to-peer (P2P) computing has attracted tremendous attention from both user and research communities. A large body of research work has been focusing on P2P search. There are two important factors driving research interests into P2P search. First, the trend of information proliferation eagerly calls for a scalable information infrastructure capable of indexing and searching rich content such as HTML, music and image files. A recent study has shown that 93% of information produced worldwide is in digital form. The volume of data added each year is over one terabytes and is expected to grow exponentially. Such huge amount of information poses many challenges for existing search systems. Second, compared to centralized search systems, P2P search systems are particularly attractive and promising due to their scalability, availability, low cost, easy of deployment, and data freshness. In this thesis, we combine techniques from information retrieval (IR) and P2P computing to tackle the issue of how to improve P2P search performance in terms of search efficiency and quality of search results. We have designed and experimentally evaluated two P2P search frameworks on distributed hash tables (DHTs) and unstructured P2P networks such as Gnutella. The results have shown that our proposed solutions can make search very efficient and improve quality of search results.
