Species distribution modeling is fundamental to biodiversity, evolution, conservation science, and the study of invasive species. Given environmental data and species distribution data, model selection techniques are frequently used to help identify relevant features. Existing studies aim to find the relevant features by selecting the best models using different criteria, and they deem the predictors in the best models as the relevant features. However, they mostly consider only a given model family, making them vulnerable to model family misspecification. To address this issue, this paper introduces the Bayesian information-theoretic minimum message length (MML) principle to species distribution model selection. In particular, we provide a framework that allows the message length of models from multiple model families to be calculated and compared, and by doing so, the model selection is both accurate and robust against model family misspecification and data aggregation. To find the relevant features efficiently, we further develop a novel search algorithm that does not require calculating the message length for all possible subsets of features. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms competing methods by selecting the best models on both artificial and real-world datasets. More specifically, there was one test on artificial data that all methods got wrong. On the other 10 tests on artificial data, the MML method got everything correct, but the alternative methods all failed on a variety of tests. Our real-world data pertained to two plant species from Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Compared to the alternative methods, for both the plant species, the MML method selects the simplest model while also having the overall best predictions.

Abstract Background Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex systemic autoimmune disease characterized by the presence of numerous autoantibodies. The interaction of infectious agents (viruses, bacteria and parasites) and a genetically susceptible host may be a key mechanism for SLE. Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread intracellular parasite that has been implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. However, the relationship between T. gondii infection and the increased risk of SLE in Chinese populations remains unclear. Methods The seroprevalence of T. gondii infection was assessed in 1771 serum samples collected from Chinese individuals (908 healthy controls and 863 SLE patients) from different regions of China using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum autoantibodies and clinical information were obtained and analysed. Results Our observations revealed a higher prevalence of anti-T. gondii antibodies (ATxA) immunoglobulin G (IgG) in serum samples from SLE patients (144/863, 16.7%) than in those from the healthy controls (53/917, 5.8%; P

IntroductionWater depth (WD) and snail abundance (SA) are two key factors affecting the growth of submersed aquatic plants in freshwater lake ecosystems. Changes in WD and SA drive changes in nutrients and other primary producers that may have direct or indirect effects on submersed plant growth, but which factor dominates the impact of both on aquatic plants has not been fully studied.MethodsTo investigate the dominant factors that influence aquatic plant growth in plateau lakes, a one-year field study was conducted to study the growth of three dominant submersed macrophyte (i.e., Vallisneria natans, Potamogeton maackianus, and Potamogeton lucens) in Erhai Lake.ResultsThe results show that, the biomass of the three dominant plants, P.maackianus, is the highest, followed by P.lucens, and V.natans is the lowest. Meanwhile, periphyton and snails attached to P.maackianus are also the highest. Furthermore, WD had a positive effect on the biomass of two submersed macrophyte species of canopy-type P.maackianus and P.lucens, while it had a negative effect on rosette-type V.natans. Snail directly inhibited periphyton attached on V.natans and thereby increasing the biomass of aquatic plants, but the effect of snails on the biomass of the other two aquatic plants is not through inhibition of periphyton attached to their plants.DiscussionThe dominant factors affecting the biomass of submersed macrophyte in Erhai Lake were determined, as well as the direct and indirect mechanisms of WD and snails on the biomass of dominant submersed macrophyte. Understanding the mechanisms that dominate aquatic plant change will have implications for lake management and restoration.

Abstract Background Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are a major global health problem, yet their crucial environmental risk factors are still unclear. We aimed to explore the associations between maternal periconceptional environmental exposures and all CHDs, isolated and multiple CHDs and CHDs subtypes. Method A case–control study including 675 infants with CHDs and 1545 healthy controls was conducted. Participating mothers who delivered in Guangzhou from October 2019 to November 2021 were recruited. To examine the independent associations between maternal periconceptional environmental exposure and offspring with CHDs, we calculated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using multivariable logistic regression model. Results Maternal exposure to living near main roads [adjusted OR (aOR) = 1.94, 95% CI = 1.06–3.56] and housing renovation (aOR = 1.94, 95% CI = 1.03–3.67) during the periconceptional period were positively related to a greater risk of all CHDs, similar results were also found in isolated CHDs rather than multiple CHDs. Additionally, living near main roads was positively associated with secundum atrial septal defect/patent foramen ovale (aOR = 2.65, 95% CI = 1.03–6.81) and housing renovation was strongly positively associated with ventricular septal defect (aOR = 5.08, 95% CI = 2.05–12.60). However, no association was observed between incense burning and family relationships and all CHDs, isolated and multiple CHDs and CHDs subtypes. Conclusion Living near main roads and housing renovation during the periconceptional period are significantly associated with the increased risks for all CHDs and isolated CHDs. Further study is needed to extend sample size to explore the effects of time and frequency of burning incense and family relationships on CHDs in offspring.

IntroductionMacrophytes are essential for maintaining the health of shallow lake ecosystems, however, the driving and responsive relationship between ecological factors (such as seasonal changes and nutrition, etc.) and plant communities is not yet clear.MethodsIn this study, we conducted seasonal surveys of macrophyte community composition in lakes with different nutrient states, aiming to understand the incidence relation between macrophyte community diversity, seasonal changes and environmental factors.ResultsAccording to the classification criteria of comprehensive nutritional index, there were significant differences in the trophic status of the three lakes. Among them, the Xihu Lake has reached mild eutrophication with a TLI value of 56.33, both Cibi Lake and Haixihai Lake are mesotrophic with TLI value of 36.03 and 33.48, respectively. The results of diversity analysis showed a significant negative correlation between α-diversity (include Species richness, Shannon-Wiener index, Simpson index and Pielou index) and lake nutrient status. Among them, Xihu Lake showed the lowest α-diversity in all seasons, Haixihai Lake exhibited the middle α-diversity, Cibi Lake indicated the highest α-diversity. Non-metric multidimensional ordination showed that there were obvious spatial structures differences among the macrophyte communities in the three lakes. Macrophyte community composition in the three lakes was more similar in summer and autumn, but there was a wider gap in spring and winter. The redundancy analysis indicated distinct differences between diversity index and ecological factors, the eigenvalues of Axis 1 and Axis 2 being, respectively, 36.13% and 8.15%. Environmental factors could explain 44.8% of the total variation in macrophyte communities structure. Among these, nitrogen, phosphorus, water transparency and water temperature contributed 50.2%, 3.5%, 3.8% and 27.5%, respectively.ConclusionsIn summary, the community structure of macrophytes in plateau shallow lakes is co-regulated by seasons and nutrients.

The effect of biodiversity on ecosystem productivity has been a controversial issue in ecological research. The species richness–productivity relationship is highly variable in natural ecosystems, with a positive relationship being one of the most commonly observed relationships. Previous regional studies from terrestrial ecosystems have demonstrated that environmental gradients can regulate the species richness–productivity relationship. However, how this relationship varies in freshwater ecosystems across spatial environment gradients remains unclear. In this study, we propose that the species richness–productivity relationship can be modulated by the water depth. Here, we surveyed the submerged macrophyte community structure by establishing 24 transects and 642 quadrats in Erhai Lake, Yunnan Plateau, China. Our findings highlight that the species richness–productivity relationship gradually changed from slightly positive to strongly positive as the environment became more light-limited with the increasing water depth, supporting the stress-gradient hypothesis. The results from this study provide new insights into the biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships and in managing lake macrophyte communities and productivity.

Abstract Spatiotemporal variation in community composition is of considerable interest in ecology. However, few studies have focused on seasonal variation patterns in taxonomic and functional community composition at the fine scale. As such, we conducted seasonal high‐density sampling of the submerged macrophyte community in Hongshan Bay of Erhai Lake in China and used the generalized dissimilarity model (GDM) to evaluate the effects of environmental factors and geographic distance on taxonomic and functional beta diversity as well as corresponding turnover and nestedness components. At the fine scale, taxonomic turnover and nestedness as well as functional turnover and nestedness showed comparable contributions to corresponding taxonomic and functional beta diversity, with different importance across seasons. All taxonomic and functional dissimilarity metrics showed seasonal variation. Of note, taxonomic beta diversity was highest in summer and lowest in winter, while functional beta diversity showed the opposite pattern. Taxonomic and functional turnover showed similar change patterns as taxonomic and functional beta diversity. Taxonomic nestedness was low in summer and high in winter. Functional nestedness was also lower in summer. These results suggest that under extreme environmental conditions, both turnover and nestedness can exist at the fine scale and seasonal community composition patterns in submerged macrophytes should be considered. Future investigations on community assembly mechanisms should pay greater attention to long‐term dynamic characteristics and functional information.

The impact of biodiversity on ecosystem functions and services remains a hot topic in ecology, especially under increasing biodiversity loss. Studies on the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning have identified two regulatory mechanisms: i.e., “niche complementarity” and “selection effect”. However, the relative importance of these mechanisms within communities and how they change along ecological gradients remain unclear. Moreover, most studies have focused on relatively stable ecosystems (e.g., forest, grassland), with limited attention paid to ecosystems with obvious seasonal changes, e.g., freshwater ecosystems. In this study we conducted a seasonal survey of submerged macrophyte communities to clarify the mechanisms of biodiversity on biomass productivity accounting for seasons and water depth. Our results showed that (1) seasonal variations of community indicators exhibited different trends along the water depth gradient. Biomass productivity showed high seasonal variation at intermediate depth while temporal beta diversity showed the opposite pattern. (2) Water depth not only inhibited biomass productivity directly but also indirectly by reducing species richness and enhancing temporal beta diversity. (3) The positive effect of species richness on biomass productivity was lower than the negative effect of evenness (path coefficients: 0.13 vs. 0.27), indicating that “selection effect” played a more important role in the relationship. (4) In shallow areas, the mechanism underlying the effects of biodiversity on biomass productivity was more from “selection effect”, whereas, in deep areas, the effects were related to both “niche complementarity” and “selection effect”. Our findings suggest that “niche complementarity” and “selection effect” are two complementary mechanisms underpinning the relationship between biodiversity and biomass productivity, and their relative importance varies with specific ecological gradients. Our results also provide a reference for studies on other freshwater organisms with analogous distribution patterns as submerged macrophytes with water depth. Scale dependence of the above relationship should be considered in future studies.

Trapanatans is one of the main species causing the swamping in the littoral zones of Erhai Lake. It commonly forms a dense canopy on the water surface in the growing season (June–September), which hampers the local water quality and habitat of submerged macrophytes, and releases nutrients to the water after death in autumn and winter, resulting in the deterioration of local water quality. At present, there are many and positive research studies on the short-term effects of harvesting water chestnut on water quality and aquatic plants, but long-term observation results are lacking. In response to the above problems, we studied responses of water quality and aquatic plant community to the removal of Trapa in littoral zone of a northern bay in Erhai from August 2014 to January 2017. This could be the first attempt to discover the long-term effects of floating-leaved vegetation management in the freshwater ecosystem. The results showed that the artificial removal of Trapa significantly improved the local water quality in the growing season, for example, the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), dissolved nitrogen (DN), total phosphorus (TP), and dissolved phosphorus (DP) in the non-Trapa zone (NTZ) were much lower than the concentrations of those in the adjacent Trapa zone (TZ). And the biomass of aquatic macrophyte community (BAMC) was significantly increased in the NTZ, up to the maximum value of about 21 kg/m2 in fresh weight. However, the diversity indexes of the community in the NTZ declined. Therefore, we suggested that although the removal of Trapa improved the water quality and increased the productivity of the submerged aquatic plant community, it reduced the species diversity of the aquatic plant community in the long run. This is another issue that we need to pay attention to in the later management in Erhai Lake.

Water level plays a crucial role in the function and social services of lakes. Studies on historical changes in water level and its eco-social function can give insights into future water conservation and management. In this study, interannual and seasonal changes in the water level of Erhai Lake were analyzed from 1952 to 2019 to explore water level responses to human activities and climate change. The time series was divided into three distinct periods, i.e., 1952–1971, 1972–2003, and 2004–2019. Results showed that the water level and fluctuation amplitude differed among the different time periods, i.e., 1965.8 and 1.3 m (1952–1971), 1964.4 and 1.9 m (1972–2003), and 1965.2 and 1.2 m (1972–2003), respectively. The construction and operation of a hydroelectric power plant along the outlet river significantly decreased the water level and increased fluctuation amplitude in the 1972–2003 period. Since 2004, due to the implementation of local government water level management laws for Erhai Lake, the water level has remained relatively high, with moderate fluctuation amplitude. In addition, compared to the increase in water level amplitude in response to increased wet season (May–October) precipitation in the 1952–1971 period, response sensitivity increased in the 1972–2003 period, but became non-significant in the 2004–2019 period. In regard to the multi-timescale relationship between water level and precipitation, precipitation decreased by 89 mm in the 2004–2019 period compared with that from 1952 to 1971, and artificial water-level regulation resulted in a time-lag of 2, 3–3.5, and 4 months between water level and precipitation during the 1952–1971, 1972–2003, and 2004–2019 periods, respectively. The eco-social aspects of changes in water level are discussed below, and water level regulation from an ecological perspective is recommended to gain economic returns in the future.

The hollow slabs strengthened by ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC) composite beam show many advantages over traditional reinforcement methods. In this paper, full-scale model load tests were carried out on an nonstrengthened prestressed concrete hollow slab and an UHPC-strengthened prestressed concrete hollow slab, comparing the load deflection, crack width, bearing capacity, deformation resistance, and self-vibration frequency of the two. Static loading experimental results indicate that UHPC enhances the overall performance of prestressed concrete hollow slabs by decreasing deflection and crack width and improving bearing capacity. The strengthening effects of UHPC on a prestressed concrete hollow slab’s flexural behavior are also discussed, such as deflection, crack width, bearing capacity, deformation resistance, self-vibration frequency, flexural behavior, and cracking load. Deflection and crack width under a load of 800 kN decreased by 45.8% and 56.3%, respectively, and the initial self-vibration frequency, ultimate bearing capacity, and cracking load increased 19.2%, 21.4%, and 50%, respectively. The plane assumption can be made generally throughout the overall test process while using UHPC strengthening, which significantly constrains crack width and improves stiffness and deformation capacity. The UHPC layer and the prestressed concrete hollow slab were connected by shear studs to produce a good composite action between them, and the bending performance and bearing capacity of the whole structure were clearly improved. In addition to experiments, a validated numerical model is developed to verify the flexural performance of hollow slab strengthened by UHPC.

Background: There has been increasing interest in the concept that exposure to environmental chemicals may be contributing factors to epidemics of diabetes mellitus (DM). Triclocarban and triclosan (TCs) are synthetic antibacterial chemicals that are widely used in personal care products. Studies have shown that TCs are endocrine disruptors that alter metabolic conditions. However, it remains unclear whether exposure to TCs is a risk factor for impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Objective: We explored the hypothesis that TCs exposure is associated with an increased risk of IGT and T2DM. Method: To test our hypothesis, we analyzed the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cross-sectional data from 2013 to 2014. IGT and T2DM were diagnosed based on an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and the WHO standards. The levels of urinary TCs were measured using an HPLC-MS/MS method that NHANES investigators developed. The association between urinary TCs status and IGT and T2DM was examined separately in men and women using multivariable logistic regression models adjusted for age, race, BMI, education, ratio of family income to poverty, smoking, exercise and hypertension. Results: Nine hundred US participants (429 men and 471 women) were included in the analysis, of whom 242 (26.89%) were diagnosed with T2DM and 117 (13.00%) had IGT. Among women, there was a significant positive association between triclocarban, but not triclosan exposure and T2DM (OR: 1.79, 95% CI: 1.05, 2.05) after adjusting for potential confounding factors. Among men, no significant association between TCs exposure and IGT or T2DM was observed. Conclusions: Triclocarban exposure may increase the risk of T2DM in the women, although additional studies are needed to confirm the results of this study and to investigate the underlying mechanisms. Data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled O2−–V5+ charge transfer band, chemical bond parameters and R/O of Eu3+ doped Ca(VO3)2 and Ca3(VO4)2: A comparable study[ing Li, Yu Pan, Wenjun Wang, Zihao Wen, Xuanxi Leng, Qi Wang, Liqun Zhou, Haibing Xu, Qinghua Xia, Li Liu, Hongping Xian, Xiaoguang Liu]. The data present the fitting results of the broad excitation spectra of Ca(VO3)2:1%Eu and Ca3(VO4)2:1%Eu using the Gaussian model, the O/R values using the experimental PL emission results. The data compares the optimized cell parameters for Ca(VO3)2: 1%Eu and Ca3(VO4)2:1%Eu through the CASTEP geometry optimization with their initial cell parameters.

A case-control study was used to explore the association between the methylation status in the promoter regions of the cGAS, MAVS, and TRAF3 genes and the diseases of cervical precancerous lesions (CPL) and cervical cancer (CC) in a Southern Chinese population, and to further explore their interaction effects with high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) infection and environmental factors in these diseases. The study protocol was approved by the ethics committee of The First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University, and this study was performed in 97 healthy controls, 75 patients with CPL and 33 patients with CC, while each participant has read and signed the informed consent forms before enrolment. The promoter methylation status genes were detected from the bisulfite-treated DNA by the bisulfite sequencing PCR (BSP) technique, which was carried out using MethPrimer. The cGAS, MAVS, and TRAF3 promoter methylation levels in CPL (CPLcGAS = 35.40%, CPLMAVS = 24.26%, and CPLTRAF3 = 96.76%) were significantly higher than those in the control (ControlcGAS = 31.87%, ControlMAVS = 21.16%, and ControlTRAF3 = 96.26%, PcGAS< 0.001, PMAVS< 0.001, and PTRAF3 = 0.001); however, there was no significant differences between the CC and control. In the logistic regression model with adjusted covariates, compared with the individuals whose cGAS methylation levels were less than or equal to 31.87%, the women with the levels more than 31.87% increased the risk of CPL by 2.49 times (ORa = 2.49, 95% CI = 1.31-4.75, Pa = 0.006). The women with MAVS methylation levels above 21.16% were 1.97 times more likely to have CPL than the those with the levels less than 21.16% (ORa = 1.97, 95% CI = 1.06–3.69, Pa = 0.033). A synergistic interaction was found between hrHPV and gene promoter methylation levels of cGAS and MAVS in CPL; however, no potential interaction was observed in CC. The promoter methylation levels in cGAS, MAVS, and TRAF3 genes are higher in CPL than in control, indicating that hypermethylation might be an early event in the progression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). The interaction between the promoter methylation levels in cGAS and MAVS genes and hrHPV infection might play a role in the development of CPL.

Objective: To evaluate the potential association between the genetic variants in miRNA processing genes (RAN, XPO5, DICER1, and TARBP2) and susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its vascular complications, as well as to further investigate their interaction with environmental factors in type 2 diabetes.Methods: We conducted a case-control study in genotyping of five polymorphic loci, including RAN rs14035, XPO5 rs11077, DICER1 rs13078, DICER1 rs3742330, and TARBP2 rs784567, in miRNA processing genes to explore the risk factors for T2DM and diabetic vascular complications. Haplotype analyses, interactions of gene-gene and interactions of gene-environment were performed too.Results: We identified a 36% decreased risk of developing T2DM in individuals with the minor A allele in DICER1 rs13078 (OR: 0.64; 95%CI: 0.42–0.95; P: 0.026). The AA haplotype in DICER1 was also associated with a protective effect on T2DM compared with the AT haplotype (OR: 0.63; 95%CI: 0.42–0.94; P-value: 0.023). T2DM patients with the TT+TC genotype at RAN rs14035 had a 1.89-fold higher risk of developing macrovascular complications than patients with the CC genotype (OR: 1.89; 95%CI: 1.04–3.45; P-value: 0.037). We also identified two three-factor interaction models. One is a three-factor [DICER1 rs13078, body mass index (BMI), and triglyceride (TG)] interaction model for T2DM (OR: 5.93; 95%CI: 1.25–28.26; P = 0.025). Another three-factor [RAN rs14035, hypertension (HP), and duration of T2DM (DOD)] interaction model was found for macrovascular complications of T2DM (OR = 41.60, 95%CI = 11.75–147.35, P < 0.001).Conclusion: Our study provides new evidence that two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the miRNA processing genes, DICER1 and RAN, and their interactions with certain environmental factors might contribute to the risk of T2DM and its vascular complications in the southern Chinese population.

Objective: To explore the association between the methylation levels in the promoter regions of the NLRP3, AIM2, and ASC genes and T2DM and its vascular complications in a Southern Han Chinese population and further analyze their interaction and mediating effects with environmental factors in T2DM.Methods: A case-control study was used to determine the association between population characteristics, the methylation level in the promoter region of the NLRP3, AIM2, and ASC genes and T2DM and vascular complications. A mediating effect among genes-environment-T2DM and the interaction of gene-gene or gene-environment factors was explored.Results: In the logistic regression model with adjusted covariants, healthy people with lower total methylation levels in the AIM2 promoter region exhibited a 2.29-fold [OR: 2.29 (1.28~6.66), P = 0.011] increased risk of developing T2DM compared with higher-methylation individuals. Dengue is an arthropod-borne infectious disease caused by dengue virus (DENV) infection and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Approximately 50–100 million people are infected with DENV each year, resulting in a high economic burden on both governments and individuals. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize information regarding the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and serotype distribution and risk factors for global dengue outbreaks occurring from 1990 to 2015. We searched the PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases through December 2016 using the term “dengue outbreak.” In total, 3,853 studies were identified, of which 243 studies describing 262 dengue outbreaks met our inclusion criteria. The majority of outbreak-associated dengue cases were reported in the Western Pacific Region, particularly after the year 2010; these cases were primarily identified in China, Singapore and Malaysia. The pooled mean age of dengue-infected individuals was 30.1 years; of the included patients, 54.5% were male, 23.2% had DHF, 62.0% had secondary infections, and 1.3% died. The mean age of dengue patients reported after 2010 was older than that of patients reported before 2010 (34.0 vs. 27.2 years); however, the proportions of patients who had DHF, had secondary infections and died significantly decreased after 2010. Fever, malaise, headache, and asthenia were the most frequently reported clinical symptoms and signs among dengue patients. In addition, among the identified clinical symptoms and signs, positive tourniquet test (OR = 4.86), ascites (OR = 13.91) and shock (OR = 308.09) were identified as the best predictors of dengue infection, DHF and mortality, respectively (both P < 0.05). The main risk factors for dengue infection, DHF and mortality were living with uncovered water container (OR = 1.65), suffering from hypotension (OR = 6.18) and suffering from diabetes mellitus (OR = 2.53), respectively (all P < 0.05). The serotype distribution varied with time and across WHO regions. Overall, co-infections were reported in 47.7% of the evaluated outbreaks, and the highest pooled mortality rate (2.0%) was identified in DENV-2 dominated outbreaks. Our study emphasizes the necessity of implementing programs focused on targeted prevention, early identification, and effective treatment.
