Automatic polarization controllers find broad applications in various fields, including optical communication, quantum optics, optical sensing, and biomedicine. Currently, the predominant integrated automatic polarization controllers employ either lithium niobate or silicon platforms. Devices based on lithium niobate platforms exhibit excellent performance; however, their fabrication complexity hinders widespread commercial deployment. In contrast, silicon-based integrated automatic polarization controllers benefit from complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor compatibility and reduced fabrication costs. Nevertheless, these silicon automatic polarization controllers suffer from low tracking speeds, peaking at merely 1.256 krad/s. In this study, we demonstrated a silicon high-speed automatic polarization controller, incorporating innovative thermal tuning units combined with a sophisticated control algorithm. The response time of these thermal tuning units has been markedly decreased to 3.2 µs. In addition, we have implemented a novel automatic polarization control algorithm, utilizing gradient descent techniques, on a field-programmable gate array control board. The synergy of the rapid thermal tuning unit and the advanced control algorithm has enabled us to attain an unprecedented polarization control speed of up to 20 krad/s, with this rate being solely limited by the capabilities of our characterization equipment. To our knowledge, this speed is the fastest yet reported for a silicon-based integrated automatic polarization control chip. The proposed device represents a significant breakthrough in the field of silicon-based automatic polarization controllers, paving the way for the future integration of additional polarization management devices. Such an advancement would mark a substantial leap in the realm of integrated photonics, bridging the gap between performance efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and technological integration.

Abstract Recent progress in two-dimensional ferroelectrics greatly expands the versatility and tunability in van der Waals heterostructure based electronics. However, the switching endurance issue that widely plagues conventional ferroelectrics in practical applications is hitherto unexplored for van der Waals layered ferroelectrics. Herein, we report the observation of unusual polarization fatigue behaviors in van der Waals layered CuInP2S6, which also possesses finite ionic conductivity at room temperature. The strong intertwinement of the short-range polarization switching and long-range ionic movement in conjunction with the van der Waals layered structure gives rise to unique morphological and polarization evolutions under repetitive electric cycles. With the help of concerted chemical, structural, lattice vibrational and dielectric analyses, we unravel the critical role of the synergy of ionic migration and surface oxidation on the anomalous polarization enhancement and the eventual polarization degradation. This work provides a general insight into the polarization fatigue characteristics in ionically-active van der Waals ferroelectrics and delivers potential solutions for the realization of fatigue-free capacitors.

The hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-mediated hypoxia signaling pathway influences oxygen homeostasis in aerobic organisms. This pathway is regulated by several other pathways. Elucidation of its regulation and the underlying mechanisms may provide insights into the strategies of adaptation and tolerance of organisms to hypoxia. In this study, we found that loss of ubiquitin-specific protease 3 (usp3) in zebrafish promotes hypoxia tolerance. Zebrafish usp3 specifically binds to hif-1αa and induces its proteasomal degradation, which is dependent on its deubiquitinase activity. This process leads to the suppression of hypoxia signaling under hypoxia. In addition, usp3 catalyzes the deubiquitination of K63-polyubiquitinated hif-1αa. Endogenous evidence indicated that mammalian USP3 behaves like zebrafish usp3 in regulating the activity of HIF-1α. These findings revealed a novel role for usp3 in influencing hypoxia signaling and showed that usp3-mediated HIF-1α degradation impairs hypoxia signaling, leading to a decrease in hypoxia tolerance.

The selection of targets with specific masses, including molecules, atoms, and clusters, has broad applications in spectrometry. As an ion mass-gate with a very high resolution, Bradbury–Nielsen Gates (BNGs) are widely used in the study of size-dependent effects of clusters. Here, wepresent a simple and low-cost method for fabricating high resolution BNGs using a printed circuit board and a 3D printed wire winding and transfer tool. It can produce a pitch of 400 µm with 25 µm diameter tungsten wires. The test results indicate that its resolution reaches more than 1500 when it couples with a homemade ultrafast voltage switch.

Natural dyes are widely available and mainly extracted from natural plants with green, safe, and sustainable characteristics. This study used Cinnamomum camphora fruit peel as the raw material under the premise of minimizing chemical reagents and employed the microwave-extraction method to extract the dyes from C. camphora fruit peel. The dye extraction conditions were optimized using response surface software via the Box-Behnken model to formulate a response surface test protocol. The results showed that optimizing the experimental conditions by the response surface method was reliable. The optimal extraction condition was found to be material-liquid ratio 1:20 (g: mL), microwave time 90 s, and microwave power 420 W. It is of practical application value to improve the extraction quantity of C. camphora fruit dye. At the same time, the infrared spectrum and HPLC-MS analysis of Cinnamomum camphora fruit dye were analyzed, and the stability of the dye was tested.

Tea is an important cash crop worldwide, and its nutritional value has led to its high economic benefits. Tea anthracnose is a common disease of tea plants that seriously affects food safety and yield and has a far-reaching impact on the sustainable development of the tea industry. In this study, phenotypic analysis and pathogenicity analysis were performed on knockout and complement strains of HTF2—the transcriptional regulator of tea anthracnose homeobox—and the pathogenic mechanism of these strains was explored via RNA-seq. The MoHox1 gene sequence of the rice blast fungus was indexed, and the anthracnose genome was searched for CfHTF2. Evolutionary analysis recently reported the affinity of HTF2 for C. fructicola and C. higginsianum. The loss of CfHTF2 slowed the vegetative growth and spore-producing capacity of C. fructicola and weakened its resistance and pathogenesis to adverse conditions. The transcriptome sequencing of wild-type N425 and CfHTF2 deletion mutants was performed, and a total of 3144 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained, 1594 of which were upregulated and 1550 of which were downregulated. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses of DEGs mainly focused on signaling pathways such as the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. In conclusion, this study lays a foundation for further study of the pathogenic mechanism of tea anthracnose and provides a molecular basis for the analysis of the pathogenic molecular mechanism of CfHTF2.

Wood dyeing plays a crucial role in improving the aesthetic appeal of wood. To enhance the value of Chinese fir, this study used environmentally friendly mulberry pigment and ultrasonic technology to dye Chinese fir. A single-factor test was conducted to investigate the impact of ultrasonic power, dyeing temperature, dyeing time, and dye concentration on dye uptake and color difference. The results revealed that ultrasonic treatment significantly increased the dye uptake and color difference compared with conventional water bath dyeing methods. Based on the single-factor test, two indexes for the color fastness of washing and sun were added, and an orthogonal test was carried out. The range analysis results demonstrated that ultrasonic power had the greatest influence on dye uptake, while dye concentration showed the strongest impact on the color difference and color fastness in washing and sunlight. The dyeing process was optimized using the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method, with the optimum parameters determined as follows: ultrasonic power of 340 W, dyeing temperature of 90 °C, dyeing time of 5 h, and dye concentration of 10%. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that ultrasound increased wood permeability and created cracks, providing attachment sites for dye molecules. Infrared analysis indicated that ultrasonic action enhanced the degradation of wood components, transforming them into smaller molecular substances and increasing the accessibility of dyes to wood. X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that ultrasonic action reduced wood crystallinity, facilitating the entry of dye molecules into Chinese fir fibers. In this study, we proposed for the first time to dye fir wood with mulberry pigment and use ultrasonic-assisted dyeing to investigate the effect of dyeing factors on the dyeing rate, color difference, and color fastness, which provides a valuable reference for natural pigment dyeing of Chinese fir.

Environmental protection and governance have become a topic of global concern. Sustainable development and green development are the unshakable ideas of China’s social and economic development. Under this premise, the energy industry, as a pillar industry in China, has the disadvantages of high energy consumption and heavy pollution. Therefore, the quality of environmental information disclosure in energy industry needs to be improved urgently. This paper selects 66 samples from 22 energy companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets from 2018 to 2020 as the research object, establishes two potential variables and 13 observed variables of environmental awareness and environmental information disclosure respectively, and constructs structural equation model to study the impact of corporate environmental awareness on environmental information disclosure. The research shows that the environmental awareness of enterprises is positively related to the level of environmental information disclosure. The conclusion is helpful to improve the enthusiasm and consciousness of energy companies to disclose environmental information. A better role in supervising the quality of environmental information disclosure by the government, enterprises and the public can be played.

Metal thiophosphates have recently received increasing research interest, thanks to their diversity in regard to metal cation occupation within the P–S scaffold, which produces a broad array of functional properties. Among them, In4/3P2S6 belongs to a special case as regards the ordering of metal cations and vacancy sites, whose physical properties remain largely unexplored, especially in the atomically thin limit. In this work, we undertake a comprehensive investigation on the thickness-dependent optical and vibrational properties of In4/3P2S6 from the bulk scale down to a few-layer flakes. Both optical birefringence and anisotropic photoelectric response are observed, which are closely linked to the monoclinic symmetry of the crystal lattice. The vanishing of Raman, absorption, and photoluminescence intensities at about three to four layers signifies the enhanced structural disorder and lattice incoherence when approaching the monolayer limit. Before reaching this critical thickness, phonon softening due to weakened interlayer coupling and bandgap widening due to quantum confinement are accompanied by thickness reduction. These findings shed light on a general understanding of the finite size effect on the physical properties of metal thiophosphates and deliver possible device applications by exploiting the property of optical anisotropy.

Cronobacter sakazakii is a common foodborne pathogen, and the mortality rate of its infection is as high as 40–80%. SdiA acts as a quorum sensing regulator in many foodborne pathogens, but its role in C. sakazakii remains unclear. Here, we further determined the effect of the sdiA gene in C. sakazakii pathogenicity. The SdiA gene in C. sakazakii was knocked out by gene editing technology, and the biological characteristics of the ΔsdiA mutant of C. sakazakii were studied, followed by transcriptome analysis to elucidate its effects. The results suggested that SdiA gene enhanced the drug resistance of C. sakazakii but diminished its motility, adhesion and biofilm formation ability and had no effect on its growth. Transcriptome analysis showed that the ΔsdiA upregulated the expression levels of D-galactose operon genes (including dgoR, dgoK, dgoA, dgoD and dgoT) and flagella-related genes (FliA and FliC) in C. sakazakii and downregulated the expression levels of related genes in the type VI secretion system (VasK gene was downregulated by 1.53-fold) and ABC transport system (downregulated by 1.5-fold), indicating that SdiA gene was related to the physiological metabolism of C. sakazakii. The results were useful for clarifying the pathogenic mechanism of C. sakazakii and provide a theoretical basis for controlling bacterial infection.

Enteromorpha, as a waste from marine pollution, brings great pressure to environmental governance every year, especially for China. Under the premise of a shortage of industrial materials, taking appropriate measures can turn waste into wealth, which will benefit us a lot. In this work, a bio-based reinforcing-type flame retardant based on Enteromorpha is designed. The designed Enteromorpha-based flame retardant system (AEG) mainly focuses on the reinforcing and flame retardant effects on ethylene-propylene-diene tripolymer (EPDM). For the AEG system, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) serves as both the acid source and the gas source; the simple hybrid material (GN) produced by loading graphene (GE) and Enteromorpha (EN) using tannic acid (TA) as a regulator serves as an acid source and a carbonizing source. The results show that when 40 phr AEG is added, the LOI of EPDM/AEG40 reaches 32.5% and the UL-94 reaches the V-0 level. The PHRR and THR values of EPDM/AEG40 are 325.9 kW/m2 and 117.6 MJ/m2, respectively, with decrements of 67.3% and 29.7%, respectively, compared with the results of neat EPDM composite. Especially, the TSP and TSR values of EPDM/AEG40 are reduced from 15.2 m2 of neat EPDM to 9.9 m2 with a decrement of 34.9% and reduced from 1715.2 m2/m2 of neat EPDM to 1124.5 m2/m2 with a decrement of 34.4%, indicating that AEG is effective in flame retardancy and smoke suppression. Meanwhile, the tensile strength and tear strength of EPDM/AEG composites are much higher than neat EPDM, therefore, with the future development of innovate reinforcing-type flame-retardant Enteromorpha, the application of Enteromorpha in the polymer flame-retardant field will surely usher in bright development.

Inert passivation can significantly enhance the upconversion intensity of lanthanide ion doped nanocrystals, especially in the heavily doped cases. In this paper, we revealed that, besides the well-known enhancement of intensity, the inert shell can also influence the upconversion color of Er3+/Yb3+ heavily doped nanocrystals in two opposite directions. The mechanisms of the effects of inert shell passivation are discussed based on the spectroscopic observations. The quantum yields of upconversion nanocrystals were estimated for the core-only and core–shell nanocrystals. This work provides guidelines for designing upconversion nanomaterials with bright emission and desired color and thus can further help them to be applied in multichannel imaging, display devices, and phototherapy.

Graphene/silicon hybrid photodetector operating at communication wavelength has attracted enormous attention recently due to its potential to realize bandwidth larger than 100 GHz. However, the responsivity is intrinsically limited by the low absorption from the atomic-thick graphene monolayer, which imposes significant obstacles towards its practical application. Although plasmonic structures has been widely applied to enhance the responsivity, it may induce the metallic absorption thus limit the responsivity lower than 0.6 A/W. Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has been reported to hold the ability to dramatically enhance the optical absorption due to the unique twist-angle-dependent van Hove singularities. In this article, we present a design of a silicon/TBG hybrid photodetector with a responsivity higher than 1 A/W and bandwidth exceeding 100 GHz. The enhanced responsivity is achieved by tuning the twisted angle of TBG to increase the absorption within the 1550 nm as well as utilizing the silicon slot waveguide to boost the mode overlap with TBG. The fabrication process of proposed design is also discussed demonstrating the advantages of low fabrication complexity. The proposed silicon/TBG photodetector could not only exhibit superior performance compared to previously reported silicon/monolayer graphene photodetector, but also pave the way for the practical application of graphene-based silicon optoelectronic devices.

Feed efficiency (FE) traits in pigs are of utmost economic importance. Genetic improvement of FE related traits in pigs might significantly reduce production cost and energy consumption. Hence, our study aimed at identifying SNPs and candidate genes associated with FE related traits, including feed conversion ratio (FCR), average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and residual feed intake (RFI). A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed for the four FE related traits in 296 Landrace pigs genotyped with PorcineSNP50 BeadChip. Two different single-trait methods, single SNP linear model GWAS (LM-GWAS) and single-step GWAS (ssGWAS), were implemented. Our results showed that the two methods showed high consistency with respect to SNP identification. A total of 32 common significant SNPs associated with the four FE related traits were identified. Bioinformatics analysis revealed eight common QTL regions, of which three QTL regions related to ADFI and RFI traits were overlapped. Gene ontology analysis revealed six common candidate genes (PRELID2, GPER1, PDX1, TEX2, PLCL2, ICAM2) relevant for the four FE related traits. These genes are involved in the processes of fat synthesis and decomposition, lipid transport process, insulin metabolism, among others. Our results provide, new insights into the genetic mechanisms and candidate function genes of FE related traits in pigs. However, further investigations to validate these results are warranted.

To date, the mechanisms of Er3+ upconversion luminescence via 980 and 1530 nm excitation have been extensively investigated; however, based on discussions, they either suffer from the lack of convincing evidence or require elaborated and time-consuming numerical simulations. In this work, the steady-state and time-resolved upconversion luminescence data of Er3+-doped NaYF4 were measured; we therefore investigated the upconversion mechanisms of Er3+ on the basis of the spectroscopic observations and the simplified rate equation modeling. This work provides a relatively simple strategy to reveal the UCL mechanisms of Er3+ upon excitation with various wavelengths, which may also be used in other lanthanide ion-doped systems.

The cytosolic RNA and DNA sensors initiate type I interferon signaling when binding to RNA or DNA. To effectively protect the host against virus infection and concomitantly avoid excessive interferonopathy at resting states, these sensors must be tightly regulated. However, the key molecular mechanisms regulating these sensors’ activation remain elusive. Here, we identify PRMT3, a type I protein arginine methyltransferase, as a negative regulator of cytosolic RNA and DNA sensors. PRMT3 interacts with RIG-I, MDA5, and cGAS and catalyzes asymmetric dimethylation of R730 on RIG-I, R822 on MDA5, and R111 on cGAS. These modifications reduce RNA-binding ability of RIG-I and MDA5 as well as DNA-binding ability and oligomerization of cGAS, leading to the inhibition of downstream type I interferon production. Furthermore, mice with loss of one copy of Prmt3 or in vivo treatment of the PRMT3 inhibitor, SGC707, are more resistant to RNA and DNA virus infection. Our findings reveal an essential role of PRMT3 in the regulation of antiviral innate immunity and give insights into the molecular regulation of cytosolic RNA and DNA sensors’ activation.
