A cosmic no-hair theorem for all initially contracting, spatially homogeneous, orthogonal Bianchi Cosmologies is derived - which shows that all such Universes asymptote to a spatially flat, isotropic Universe with the inclusion of a shear viscous stress. This establishes a new mechanism of isotropisation in a contracting Universe, which does not take recourse to an ekpyrosis-like mechanism using an effective ultra-stiff equation of state fluid, that is, one in which the pressure is much greater than the energy density., 9 pages

What if Big Bang was hot from its very inception? This is possible in a bimetric theory where the source of fluctuations is thermal, requiring the model to live on a critical boundary in the space of parameters and can be realized when an anti-DBI brane moves within an $EAdS_2 \times E_3$ geometry. This setup renders the model unique, with sharp predictions for the scalar spectral index and its running. We investigate the non-Gaussian signatures of this thermal bimetric model, or "bi-thermal" for short. We adapt the standard calculation of non-Gaussianities for $P(X,\phi)$ models to the thermal nature of the model, emphasising how the bi-thermal peculiarities affect the calculation and alter results. This leads to precise predictions for the shape and amplitude of the three-point function of the bi-thermal model (at tree-level): $f^{\rm local} _{\rm NL} = -3/2$ and $f^{\rm equil} _{\rm NL} = -2 + 4 \sqrt{3}\pi/9 \simeq 0.4$. We also discover a new shape of flattened non-gaussianity $\propto (k_1+k_2-k_3)^{-3/2} +$ permutations, which is expected due to the excited thermal initial conditions. We study the detailed process by which slow contraction smooths and flattens the universe using an improved numerical relativity code that accepts initial conditions with non-perturbative deviations from homogeneity and isotropy along two independent spatial directions. Contrary to common descriptions of the early universe, we find that the geometry first rapidly converges to an inhomogeneous, spatially-curved and anisotropic ultralocal state in which all spatial gradient contributions to the equations of motion decrease as an exponential in time to negligible values. This is followed by a second stage in which the geometry converges to a homogeneous, spatially flat and isotropic spacetime. The separate-universe approach provides an effective description of cosmological perturbations at large scales, where the universe can be described by an ensemble of independent, locally homogeneous and isotropic patches. By reducing the phase space to homogeneous and isotropic degrees of freedom, it greatly simplifies the analysis of large-scale fluctuations. It is also a prerequisite for the stochastic-inflation formalism. In this work, we formulate the separate-universe approach in the Hamiltonian formalism, which allows us to analyse the full phase-space structure of the perturbations. Such a phase-space description is indeed required in dynamical regimes which do not benefit from a background attractor, as well as to investigate quantum properties of cosmological perturbations. We find that the separate-universe approach always succeeds in reproducing the same phase-space dynamics for homogeneous and isotropic degrees of freedom as the full cosmological perturbation theory, provided that the wavelength of the modes under consideration are larger than some lower bound that we derive. In dieser Arbeit studieren wir das ekpyrotische Szenario, welches ein kosmologisches Modell des frühen Universums ist. Dieses Modell erklärt mit Hilfe einer kontrahierenden ekpyrotischen Phase die "Anfangsbedingungen" des Universums. Das bedeutet, dass der konventionelle "Urknall" durch einem Rückprall ersetzt wird. In dieser Arbeit versuchen wir Unstimmigkeiten zwischen den Vorhersagen der ekpyrotischen Modelle und den Messungen der Kosmologischen Hintergrundstrahlung des Planck Satelliten zu lösen. Den Planck Messungen zufolge sind die ursprünglichen adiabatischen Fluktuationen fast skaleninvariant und gaußverteilt. In this model the ``initial conditions'' of the universe are determined by a contracting ekpyrotic phase, which means that the conventional ``Big Bang'' is replaced by a bounce. The following thesis addresses the tension between ekpyrotic predictions and the observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation by the Planck team. According to the Planck data, the primordial curvature fluctuations are nearly scale-invariant and Gaussian. However, during ekpyrosis, the fluctuations have typically sizable non-Gaussian signatures. In this thesis, we propose two approaches in order to resolve the tension with observations. In the non-minimal entropic mechanism, nearly scale-invariant entropy perturbations are created due to a non-minimal kinetic coupling between two scalar fields. We will show that the non-Gaussian corrections during ekpyrosis are precisely zero leading to overall small non-Gaussian signatures after the conversion process from entropy perturbations to curvature perturbations. In the following, we will consider a kinetic conversion phase, which takes place after a non-singular bounce. Due to the growth of entropy perturbations during the bounce phase, the possibly large non-Gaussian corrections created during the ekpyrotic phase become suppressed during the bounce. The last part of this thesis addresses a major problem of the inflationary paradigm: Due to large adiabatic fluctuations, slow-roll eternal inflation creates infinitely many physically distinct pocket universes. We propose a model in the framework of scalar-tensor theories, which conflated ideas of both inflation and ekpyrosis. During conflation, the universe undergoes accelerated expansion, but there are no large adiabatic fluctuations like during ekpyrosis resulting in the absence of slow-roll eternal inflation.

It has been argued that oscillatory features from spectator fields in the primordial power spectrum could be a probe of alternatives to inflation. In this work, we soften this claim by showing that the frequency and amplitude dependence of the patterns appearing in these scenarios could be mimicked by field interactions during inflation. The degeneracy of the frequency holds for the n-point correlation functions, while the degeneracy of the amplitude is broken at the level of non-gaussianities. The Starobinsky model, considered in the framework of the Palatini formalism, in contrast to the metric formulation, does not provide us with a model for inflation, due to the absence of a propagating scalar degree of freedom that can play the role of the inflaton. In the present article we study the Palatini formulation of the Starobinsky model coupled, in general nonminimally, to scalar fields and analyze its inflationary behavior. We consider scalars, minimally or nonminimally coupled to the Starobinsky model, such as a quadratic model, the induced gravity model or the standard Higgs-like inflation model and analyze the corresponding modifications favorable to inflation. In addition we examine the case of a classically scale-invariant model driven by the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. In the slow-roll approximation, we analyze the inflationary predictions of these models and compare them to the latest constraints from the Planck collaboration. In this paper we skim the true phenomenological requirements behind the concept of inflationary squeezing. We argue that all that is required is that at horizon re-entry the fluctuations form standing waves with the correct temporal phase (specifically, sine waves). We quantify this requirement and relate it to the initial conditions fed into the radiation dominated epoch by whatever phase of the Universe produced the fluctuations. The only relevant quantity turns out to be the degree of suppression of the momentum, $p$, of the fluctuations, $y$, which we measure by $\sigma\sim \omega^2 |y|^2/|p|^2$. Even though $\sigma$ equals the squeezing parameter, $s$, in the case of inflation and bimetric varying speed of light scenarios, this is not true in general, specifically in some bouncing Universe models. It is also not necessary to produce a large $\sigma$ at the end of the primordial phase: it is enough that $\sigma$ be not too small. This is the case with scenarios based on modified dispersion relations (MDR) emulating the dispersion relations of Horava-Lifshitz theory, which produce $\sigma\sim 1$, enough to comply with the observational requirements. We investigate cosmological models described by a scalar field with an exponential potential, and apply the stochastic formalism, which allows us to study how quantum field fluctuations give rise to stochastic noise. This modifies the classical dynamics of the scalar field at large scales, above a coarse-graining scale. In particular we explore how quantum field fluctuations perturb the equation of state on large scales which can lead to a quantum instability of the classical collapse solution below the Planck scale in the case of a pressureless collapse., Comment: 1 figure, 3 tables. We study the evolution of gravitational waves for non-singular cosmological solutions within the framework of Born-Infeld inspired gravity theories, with special emphasis on the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld theory. We review the existence of two types of non-singular cosmologies, namely bouncing and asymptotically Minkowski solutions, from a perspective that makes their features more apparent. We study in detail the propagation of gravitational waves near these non-singular solutions and carefully discuss the origin and severity of the instabilities and strong coupling problems that appear. We also investigate the role of the adiabatic sound speed of the matter sector in the regularisation of the gravitational waves evolution. We extend our analysis to more general Born-Infeld inspired theories where analogous solutions are found. As a general conclusion, we obtain that the bouncing solutions are generally more prone to instabilities, while the asymptotically Minkowski solutions can be rendered stable, making them appealing models for the early universe., 13 pages, 4 figures, an error in the section of elementary symmetric polynomials is now corrected

We will perform a detailed study of the matter-ekpyrotic bouncing scenario in Loop Quantum Cosmology using the methods of the dynamical systems theory. We will show that when the background is driven by a single scalar field, at very late times, in the contracting phase, all orbits depict a matter dominated Universe, which evolves to an ekpyrotic phase. After the bounce the Universe enters in the expanding phase, where the orbits leave the ekpyrotic regime going to a kination (also named deflationary) regime. Moreover, this scenario supports the production of heavy massive particles conformally coupled with gravity, which reheats the universe at temperatures compatible with the nucleosynthesis bounds and also the production of massless particles non-conformally coupled with gravity leading to very high reheating temperatures but ensuring the nucleosynthesis success. Dealing with cosmological perturbations, these background dynamics produce a nearly scale invariant power spectrum for the modes that leave the Hubble radius, in the contracting phase, when the Universe is quasi-matter dominated, whose spectral index and corresponding running is compatible with the recent experimental data obtained by PLANCK's team., Comment: 39 pages, 19 figures. We review matter bounce scenarios where the matter content is dark matter and dark energy. These cosmologies predict a nearly scale-invariant power spectrum with a slightly red tilt for scalar perturbations and a small tensor-to-scalar ratio. Importantly, these models predict a positive running of the scalar index, contrary to the predictions of the simplest inflationary and ekpyrotic models, and hence could potentially be falsified by future observations. In dieser Arbeit untersuchen wir kosmologische Modelle des frühen Universums, insbesondere alternative Modelle zur Inflationstheorie. Im ersten Teil leiten wir mithilfe des kovarianten Formalismus die Bewegunsgleichungen für zwei Skalarfelder mit nicht-kanonischem Feldraum bis zur dritten Ordnung in der Störtheorie her. Diese Gleichungen können dazu verwendet werden, Vorhersagen für die Bi- und Trispektren von Multi-Feldmodellen zu treffen, z.B. nicht-minimale ekpyrotische Modelle. In diesen Modellen werden zuerst aufgrund der nicht-minimalen kinetischen Kopplung zwischen den beiden Skalarfeldern nahezu skaleninvariante Entropiefluktuationen erzeugt, die dann anschließend in adiabatische Fluktuationen umgewandelt werden. Das Bi- sowie das Trispektrum der Entropiefluktuationen ist genau null während der ekpyrotischen Phase. Damit die Amplitude der adiabatischen Fluktuationen und das Bispektrum kompatibel mit derzeitigen Messungen sind, muss der Umwandlungsprozess effizient sein, was zu einem signifikanten, negativen Trispektrum-Parameter führt. Als zweite Alternative zur Inflation konstruieren wir ein neues kosmologisches Modell, das im Rahmen der Skalar-Tensor-Gravitationstheorien Elemente der Inflation mit Elementen des ekpyrotischen Modells verbindet. Während einer Phase der Konflation expandiert das Universum beschleunigt, jedoch mit negativer potentieller Energie. Skalare und tensorielle Fluktuationen werden nicht verstärkt – die ewige Inflation und die damit einhergehenden Unendlichkeiten werden vermieden. Wir zeigen außerdem, wie Dichtefluktuationen in Übereinstimmung mit aktuellen Beobachtungen erzeugt werden können, indem wir mithilfe eines zweiten Skalarfeldes den entropischen Mechanismus einsetzen. Beide Modelle unterscheiden sich von “slow-roll” Inflationstheorien basierend auf einem Skalarfeld darin, dass keine primordialen Gravitationswellen produziert werden und sie folglich mit den aktuellen Daten des PLANCK-Satelliten übereinstimmen. In this thesis we explore cosmological models of the early universe, in particular alternatives to the theory of inflation. In the first part of this thesis, we derive the evolution equations for two scalar fields with non-canonical field space metric up to third order in perturbation theory, employing the covariant formalism. These equations can be used to derive predictions for local bi- and trispectra of multi-field cosmological models, e.g. in non-minimal ekpyrotic models. In these models, nearly scale-invariant entropy perturbations are generated first due to a non-minimal kinetic coupling between two scalar fields, and subsequently converted into curvature perturbations. Remarkably, the entropy perturbations have vanishing bi- and trispectra during the ekpyrotic phase. However, in order to obtain a large enough amplitude and small enough bispectrum of the curvature perturbations, as seen in current measurements, the conversion process must be very efficient, leading to a significant, negative trispectrum parameter. As a second alternative to inflation, we construct a new kind of cosmological model that conflates inflation and ekpyrosis in the framework of scalar-tensor theories of gravity. During a phase of conflation, the universe undergoes accelerated expansion, but with negative potential energy. A distinguishing feature of the model is that it does not amplify adiabatic scalar and tensor fluctuations, and in particular does not lead to eternal inflation and the associated infinities. We also show how density fluctuations in accordance with current observations may be generated by adding a second scalar field to the model and making use of the entropic mechanism. The distinguishing observational feature of both models compared to single-field slow-roll inflation is an absence of primordial gravitational waves, in agreement with current data from the PLANCK satellite.

We consider cosmological dynamics in the theory of gravity with the scalar field possessing the nonminimal kinetic coupling to curvature given as κGμνφ,μφ,ν, and the Higgs-like potential . Using the dynamical system method, we analyze stationary points, their stability, and all possible asymptotical regimes of the model under consideration. We show that the Higgs field with the kinetic coupling provides an existence of accelerated regimes of the Universe evolution. There are three possible cosmological scenarios with acceleration: (i) The late-time de Sitter epoch when the Hubble parameter tends to the constant value, as t , while the scalar field tends to zero, 0φ(t) , so that the Higgs potential reaches its local maximum . (ii) The Big Rip when H(t)∼(t∗-t)-1 and φ(t)∼(t∗-t)-2 as t t∗. (iii) The Little Rip when H(t)∼ t1/2 and φ(t)∼ t1/4 as t . Also, we derive modified slow-roll conditions for the Higgs field and demonstrate that they lead to the Little Rip scenario.

We consider the matter bounce scenario in F(T) gravity and Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) for phenomenological potentials that at early times provide a nearly matter dominated Universe in the contracting phase, having a reheating mechanism in the expanding or contracting phase, i.e., being able to release the energy of the scalar field creating particles that thermalize in order to match with the hot Friedmann Universe, and finally at late times leading to the current cosmic acceleration. For these potentials, numerically solving the dynamical perturbation equations we have seen that, for the particular F(T) model that we will name teleparallel version of LQC, and whose modified Friedmann equation coincides with the corresponding one in holonomy corrected LQC when one deals with the flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) geometry, the corresponding equations obtained from the well-know perturbed equations in F(T) gravity lead to theoretical results that fit well with current observational data. More precisely, in this teleparallel version of LQC there is a set of solutions which leads to theoretical results that match correctly with last BICEP2 data, and there is another set whose theoretical results fit well with Planck's experimental data. On the other hand, in the standard holonomy corrected LQC, using the perturbed equations obtained replacing the Ashtekar connection by a suitable sinus function and inserting some counter-terms in order to preserve the algebra of constrains, the theoretical value of the tensor/scalar ratio is smaller than in the teleparallel version, which means that there is always a set of solutions that matches with Planck's data, but for some potentials BICEP2 experimental results disfavours holonomy corrected LQC.

We generalize the ultraviolet sector of gravitation via a Born-Infeld action using lessons from massive gravity. The theory contains all of the elementary symmetric polynomials and is treated in the Palatini formalism. We show how the connection can be solved algebraically to be the Levi-Civita connection of an effective metric. The non-linearity of the algebraic equations yields several branches, one of which always reduces to General Relativity at low curvatures. We explore in detail a {\it minimal} version of the theory, for which we study solutions in the presence of a perfect fluid with special attention to the cosmological evolution. In vacuum we recover Ricci-flat solutions, but also an additional physical solution corresponding to an Einstein space. The existence of two physical branches remains for non-vacuum solutions and, in addition, the branch that connects to the Einstein space in vacuum is not very sensitive to the specific value of the energy density. For the branch that connects to the General Relativity limit we generically find three behaviours for the Hubble function depending on the equation of state of the fluid, namely: either there is a maximum value for the energy density that connects continuously with vacuum, or the energy density can be arbitrarily large but the Hubble function saturates and remains constant at high energy densities, or the energy density is unbounded and the Hubble function grows faster than in General Relativity. The second case is particularly interesting because it could offer an interesting inflationary epoch even in the presence of a dust component. Although inflation is a natural candidate to generate the lengths of coherence of magnetic fields needed to explain current observations, it needs to break conformal invariance of electromagnetism to obtain significant magnetic amplitudes. Of the simplest realizations are the kinetically-coupled theories $f^2(\phi)F_{\mu\nu}F^{\mu\nu}$ (or $IFF$ theories). However, these are known to suffer from electric fields backreaction or the strong coupling problem. In this work we shall confirm that such class of theories are problematic to support magnetogenesis during inflationary cosmology. On the contrary, we show that a bouncing cosmology with a contracting phase dominated by an equation of state with $p>-\rho/3$ can support magnetogenesis, evading the {backreaction/strong-coupling problem}. Finally, we study safe magnetogenesis in a particular bouncing model with an ekpyrotic-like contracting phase. The gravitational dynamics and cosmological implications of three classes of recently introduced multi-scale spacetimes (with, respectively, ordinary, weighted and q-derivatives) are discussed. These spacetimes are non-Riemannian: the metric structure is accompanied by an independent measure-differential structure with the characteristics of a multi-fractal, namely, different dimensionality at different scales and, at ultra-short distances, a discrete symmetry known as discrete scale invariance. Under this minimal paradigm, five general features arise: (a) the big-bang singularity can be replaced by a finite bounce, (b) the cosmological constant problem is reinterpreted, since accelerating phases can be mimicked by the change of geometry with the time scale, without invoking a slowly rolling scalar field, (c) the discreteness of geometry at Planckian scales can leave an observable imprint of logarithmic oscillations in cosmological spectra and (d) give rise to an alternative mechanism to inflation or (e) to a fully analytic model of cyclic mild inflation, where near scale invariance of the perturbation spectrum can be produced without strong acceleration. Various properties of the models and exact dynamical solutions are discussed. We investigate models in which the inflaton emerges as a composite field of a four dimensional, strongly interacting and nonsupersymmetric gauge theory featuring purely fermionic matter. We show that it is possible to obtain successful inflation via non-minimal coupling to gravity, and that the underlying dynamics is preferred to be near conformal. We show that the same gaugino condensate which is introduced to stabilize the dilaton breaks supersymmetry. We present a simple generalisation of the $\Lambda$CDM model which on the one hand reaches very good agreement with the present day experimental data and provides an internal inflationary mechanism on the other hand. It is based on Palatini modified gravity with quadratic Starobinsky term and generalized Chaplygin gas as a matter source providing, besides a current accelerated expansion, the epoch of endogenous inflation driven by type III freeze singularity. It follows from our statistical analysis that astronomical data favors negative value of the parameter coupling quadratic term into Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian and as a consequence the bounce instead of initial Big-Bang singularity is preferred., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, typos corrected; version accepted by JCAP

We present a setup that provides a partial UV-completion of the ghost inflation model up to a scale which can be almost as high as the Planck mass. This is achieved by coupling the inflaton to the Lorentz-violating sector described by the Einstein-aether theory or its khronometric version. Compared to previous works on ghost inflation our setup allows to go beyond the study of small perturbations and include the background dynamics in a unified framework. In the specific regime when the expansion of the Universe is dominated by the kinetic energy of the inflaton we find that the model predicts rather high tensor-to-scalar ratio r ~ 0.02 $\div$ 0.2 and non-Gaussianity of equilateral type with f_NL in the range from -50 to -5., Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure; the predicted range of observables explicitly indicated in the abstract, footnote on the BICEP2 results added; version to be published in JCAP

Several recent studies have considered the implications for astrophysics and cosmology of some possible nonclassical properties of spacetime at the Planck scale. The new effects, such as a Planck-scale-modified energy-momentum (dispersion) relation, are often inferred from the analysis of some quantum versions of Minkowski spacetime, and therefore the relevant estimates depend heavily on the assumption that there could not be significant interplay between Planck-scale and curvature effects. We here scrutinize this assumption, using as guidance a quantum version of de Sitter spacetime with known Inonu-Wigner contraction to a quantum Minkowski spacetime. And we show that, contrary to common (but unsupported) beliefs, the interplay between Planck-scale and curvature effects can be significant. Within our illustrative example, in the Minkowski limit the quantum-geometry deformation parameter is indeed given by the Planck scale, while in the de Sitter picture the parameter of quantization of geometry depends both on the Planck scale and the curvature scalar. For the much-studied case of Planck-scale effects that intervene in the observation of gamma-ray bursts we can estimate the implications of "quantum spacetime curvature" within robust simplifying assumptions. For cosmology at the present stage of the development of the relevant mathematics one cannot go beyond semiheuristic reasoning, and we here propose a candidate approximate description of a quantum FRW geometry, obtained by patching together pieces (with different spacetime curvature) of our quantum de Sitter. This semiheuristic picture, in spite of its limitations, provides rather robust evidence that in the early Universe the interplay between Planck-scale and curvature effects could have been particularly significant., Comment: 26 pages.
