- Abstract
This cross-sectional study, conducted on 4003 participants aged between 18 and 45, aims to contribute to orthorexia nervosa (ON) research by examining the relationship between ON, body image and nutritional adequacy. The Orthorexia Nervosa-11 scale (ORTO-11) and body perception scale were applied to individuals, and food consumption records were taken with a 24-hour dietary recall method. The study found that more individuals with orthorexia nervosa (ON) considered themselves overweight compared to non-ON individuals. Evaluating diet quality, the mean adequacy ratio was significantly higher in ON individuals. Nutrient adequacy ratios for total fiber, magnesium, zinc, thiamine, folic acid, and vitamin C were higher, while those for carbohydrate and iron were lower in ON individuals. Additionally, increasing the number of snacks, protein, and total fiber adequacy decreased the ORTO-11 score. Distorted body image perception may be a risk factor for ON, but healthy eating fixation does not lead to nutrient inadequacy unless it involves progressive food restriction. Background: Inaccurate body image perception could contribute to the adoption of unhealthy eating behaviors and physical inactivity. This study aimed to assess the physical activity, eating behaviors, and body image perception of university students. Methods: A total of 427 university students were recruited through convenience sampling for this cross-sectional study. The height and weight of the respondents were physically measured. Physical activity levels were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form. Eating behaviors, including cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, and emotional eating, were evaluated using the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-R21. Body image perception was measured using the Ma Figural Stimuli. Results: Most university students (72.6%) had accurate body image perceptions. There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in total physical activity between students with accurate and inaccurate body image perception. Males had significantly higher uncontrolled eating scores (p < 0.05) compared to females, while obese students exhibited significantly higher (p < 0.05) cognitive restraint and uncontrolled eating scores compared to underweight students. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of understanding body image perception among university students when designing physical activity interventions aimed at body weight management. Background: The increasing focus on healthy eating and achieving an ideal physique can lead to the development of disordered eating patterns, including orthorexia nervosa. The relationship between body image perception, self-esteem, and the risk of orthorexia nervosa is multifaceted, with negative body image and low self-esteem often acting as contributing factors. This study aimed to assess the risk of orthorexia nervosa and analyze body image perception among women engaged in strength training and dietetics students. Methods: The study was conducted using a Computer-Assisted Web Interview with 190 women aged 18 and older, divided into four groups: dietetics students engaged in strength training, dietetics students not engaged in strength training, non-dietetics women engaged in strength training, and non-dietetics women not engaged in strength training. The study utilized the Düsseldorf Orthorexia Scale to assess the risk of orthorexia nervosa and the Body-Esteem Scale to evaluate body image perception. Results: The highest orthorexia nervosa risk was observed in dietetics students who do not engage in a strength training group (60.9%), followed by dietetics students who engage in a strength training group (37.5%). In contrast, women who are not studying dietetics and do not engage in a strength training group exhibited the lowest orthorexia nervosa risk (13%), emphasizing the protective role of physical activity and reduced focus on nutritional rigidity. Regression analysis revealed that low appearance self-esteem (p = 0.011) and high social attribution (p = 0.043) significantly predicted higher orthorexia nervosa risk. Group affiliation also influenced orthorexia nervosa risk, with dietetics students showing higher Düsseldorf Orthorexia Scale scores. However, weight-related self-esteem (p = 0.082) did not significantly impact orthorexia nervosa scores. Conclusions: Dietetics education and physical activity independently and collectively affect orthorexia nervosa risk. Students in dietetics, particularly those not engaged in strength training, are at a higher risk due to the dual influence of academic pressures and heightened nutritional awareness. The findings underscore the need for interventions targeting body image perception, promoting flexible dietary approaches, and addressing external validation pressures to mitigate orthorexia nervosa risk in high-risk groups. Background: Body image disturbance has been associated with various health conditions and has the potential to trigger the development of unhealthy behaviors, including dysfunctional attitudes and eating behaviors, which may evolve into eating disorders. This study explores the relationship between body image variables—such as global self-worth, physical self-worth, and physical attractiveness—and the continuum of eating attitudes and behaviors. Methods: A canonical correlation analysis was performed to assess the multivariate relationship between attitudinal and perceptual variables and the continuum of eating behaviors, with a total of 113 cases analyzed. Results: The findings indicate that intuitive eating and a positive body image (including global self-worth and physical attractiveness) are most strongly associated with the functional end of the continuum, while disordered eating behaviors and body dissatisfaction are linked to the dysfunctional end. Conclusions: These results suggest that interventions targeting the emotional and attitudinal dimensions of body dissatisfaction, whether delivered in vivo or via virtual reality (e.g., weight exposure), may facilitate a shift toward healthier, more functional eating behaviors along the continuum. - Abstract
Background/Objectives: Adolescent obesity is highly likely to lead to adult obesity and is associated with dietary habits, subjective health, and body image perception. This study aimed to analyze the relationships between BMI, dietary habits, subjective health perception, and body image perception among Korean adolescents using data from the 18th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted in 2022 to explore strategies for reducing adolescent obesity rates. Methods: Data from 50,427 participants were analyzed, including BMI, seven lifestyle factors (intake frequencies of water, milk, fruit, soft drinks, vegetables, breakfast, and late-night snacks), and responses to one item each for subjective health perception and body image perception. Results: Higher intake frequencies of breakfast, fruits, soft drinks, and late-night snacks were associated with lower BMI (p < 0.001). However, among high school students, those with lower water and breakfast intake but higher soft drink and late-night snack intake exhibited an increasing trend in BMI. Subjective health perception and body image perception were interrelated, with subjective health perception influencing body image perception (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Addressing nutritional issues within schools, including improving school meals, regulating accessible products, and providing nutritional intake guidelines, is essential. Additionally, developing tailored health education programs to promote healthy body image perceptions is necessary. This study can serve as a foundational resource for analyzing adolescent health and developing strategies to improve health behaviors in changing environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

Introduction This descriptive study examined the relationship between body image perception and smoking status among women aged 19–64 years in Korea, using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Methods This study is a secondary analysis of data gathered from the KNHANES between 2014 and 2020, encompassing 12515 women aged 19–64 years. The final study group consisted of 742 current smokers (CS), 132 hidden smokers (HS), and 11641 non-smokers (NS). Hidden smokers were defined as participants who reported being non-smokers but had urine cotinine levels >50 ng/mL. The participants were divided into three age categories: 19–29, 30–49, and 50–64 years. A multiple logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between body image perception and smoking status, by age group. Results Baseline statistics indicated that smokers (both CS and HS) generally had a lower socioeconomic status across all age groups. The highest rate of obesity perception was observed in the CS group, followed by the HS group, in both groups of women aged 19–29 and 30–49 years. However, only women aged 19–29 years in the CS group were more likely to perceive themselves as obese than those in the NS group (AOR=2.60; 95% CI: 1.49–4.52; p=0.001). Furthermore, factors such as current smoking status (AOR=2.32; 95% CI: 1.28–4.23; p=0.006), higher body mass index (AOR=2.95; 95% CI: 2.59–3.37; p more...

Aim: To determine the prevalence of body image accuracy/distortion in Brazilian men and women and to investigate sociodemographic and lifestyle-related factors, and the presence of chronic diseases associated with body image distortion. Methods: Data from 6,357 men and 7,657 women participating in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) were collected using a multidimensional questionnaire covering sociodemographic characteristics, health behaviors, heath conditions and body image perception. Results: Most participants (53.5% of the women and 54.7% of the men) were found to have an accurate self-perception of their body. When the factors associated with the perception of being heavier than reality were investigated, adopting weight loss measures and not being hypertensive proved protective against this distortion, both in women and men. Conversely, the perception of being lighter than reality was associated, in both women and men, with better education, being black or of mixed race, adopting weight loss measures and not being hypertensive or diabetic. Additional factors associated with underestimating weight were not consuming alcohol (only in women) and belonging to a lower social class (only in men). Conclusion: These findings may contribute to the implementation of public health policies and interventions to promote health and well-being in the Brazilian population. GOLDEN ratio , *HALLUX valgus , *BODY image , *YOUNG adults , *STATURE - Abstract
Purpose: Our study aimed to identify the presence and severity of hallux valgus deformity in young adults, using both by the Manchester classification and goniometry, to evaluate the Quadriceps angle (Q angle), and to examine the relationship between some anatomical parameters and body image perception. Materials and Methods: A total of 158 individuals aged 18-30 (111 females, 47 males) who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study were included. Demographic characteristics, Quadriceps angle, and hallux valgus angle were measured. Hallux valgus and Quadriceps angles were determined using a goniometer, while the Manchester scale was employed to evaluate the level of Hallux valgus deformity. The Golden Ratio for the lower extremity was calculated by taking the ratio of lower extremity length to leg length, and the body image perception score was determined. Results: Body weight, height and body mass index showed statistically significant differences in terms of gender, while age parameter did not show statistically significant difference between genders. Also, no significant difference in Quadriceps angle was observed between genders for both right and left sides, while a significant difference in Hallux valgus angle was noted. A high, positive, and significant relationship was found between Manchester classification and hallux valgus, while Golden ratio values did not significantly differ by gender. Additionally, body image perception scores were higher in males (162.60±25.45 points) than in females (153.51±25.89 points). Conclusion: Deviations from their normal values of the hallux valgus and quadriceps angle which affect the musculoskeletal system, may lead to some health problems, as well as difficulties in performing daily life activities, and concerns about aesthetics. Failure to fulfil one's normal functions or not to find oneself aesthetically insufficient will also make it likely that the body image perception will deteriorate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

(1) Background: Body image dissatisfaction has been commonly reported in adolescents with overweight/obesity and has been related to a lack of motivation to change lifestyle behaviors. Plus, a better perception of physical fitness has been related to a higher self-perception in physical aspect and social items in youths. (2) Methods: A total of 120 (59.2% males, mean age of 12.3 ± 0.9 years) middle-school adolescents participated in the present study. Anthropometric measurements were assessed following the standard procedures. Body weight perception and body image satisfaction were assessed using the Silhouette Figure Body Images Test. Self-perception profile, perceived physical fitness, and perceived difficulties in conducting physical tasks were assessed by using structured questionnaires. (3) Results: Overweight was present in 27.5% adolescents and obesity in 32.5%. A total of 89.7% of adolescents with obesity did not have a real perception of his/her weight status and 84.6% of adolescents with obesity were not satisfied with his/her body image. The self-perception of physical appearance, perceived difficulties in running, perceived overall fitness, and perceived speed/agility were lower in adolescents who were unsatisfied with their body image. Body image satisfaction was positively associated with the self-perception of physical appearance and overall fitness and negatively associated with perceived difficulties in running, independently of sex, age, and BMI. (4) Conclusions: Adolescents with obesity did not have a real perception of their weight status and were unsatisfied with their body image. The positive association between body satisfaction, a better perception of overall fitness, and less difficulties in conducting physical tasks suggests the protective role of the components of physical activity and health-related fitness on body acceptance in a critical period of life. Using the Chi-square tests and t -tests, the parameters were studied and correlations using Spearman's rank correlation were established. Results: Students with a higher BMI were at a greater risk of eating disorder (ED), higher concerns with body perception, and lowered self-esteem. Those with a higher risk of ED were associated with body dissatisfaction and lower self-esteem. Body image distortions were associated with low self-esteem. Conclusions: ED risk is associated with body dissatisfaction and lower self-esteem in medical students. Future studies are required to establish this relation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

Conclusion: These findings may contribute to the implementation of public health policies and interventions to promote health and well-being in the Brazilian population. more...

In the context of the Fashion Apparel Industry 4.0, a transformative evolution is directed towards the Online Apparel Mass Customization (OAMC) strategy, which provides efficient and personalized apparel product solutions to consumers. A critical challenge within this customization process is the determination of sizes. While existing research addresses comfort evaluation in relation to wearer and garment fit, little attention has been given to how garment fit influences the wearer’s body image, which is also an important purchase consideration. This study investigates the impact of garment fit on the wearer’s body scale perception using quantitative research design. A digital dataset of avatars, clothed in varying sizes of T-shirts, were created for the body scale perception experiment, and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model was developed to predict the effect of T-shirt fit on body image. With only a small number of garments and body measurements as inputs, the ANN model can accurately predict the body scales of the clothed persons. It was found that the effect of apparel fit on body image varies depending on the wearer’s gender, body size, and shape. This model can be applied to enhance the online garment shopping experience with respect to personalized body image enhancement. more...

Introduction: Systematic evaluations focusing on the perception of body image and social support in relation to quality of life (QoL) outcomes in patients radical cystectomy (RC) with urinary diversion (UD) are currently lacking. This study investigated the relationship between body image perception, social support, and QoL in bladder cancer patients who underwent RC with UD. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using validated general oncology tools to assess QoL in relation to newly implemented tools assessing body image perception and social support. Body image perception was assessed with the Self-Image Scale, and social support was assessed using the Illness-Specific Social Support Scale. Logistic regression models were used to analyze factors associated with QoL and body image, respectively. Results: The survey revealed a significant association of body image perception with QoL, as well as social support with body image perception. This is the first study to systematically evaluate these psychosocial factors in the context of QoL for RC patients, highlighting their critical role in patient-reported outcomes. Conclusion: Body image perception and social support are important psychosociological factors that affect QoL of bladder cancer patients post-RC. Targeted psychosocial interventions could be promising for improving QoL patients post-RC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

- Abstract
This study was conducted on 5 March 2024, by the Universidad Europea de Madrid. This study aims to explore how body image perceptions influence health behaviors and mental and physical health outcomes among a specific group of 605 young adults aged 20 to 35 engaged in strength training regimes. To measure these perceptions, the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) was employed, an advanced tool that assesses multiple dimensions of body image through its subscales, including feelings of physical attractiveness, investment in one's appearance, and satisfaction with different body areas. Participants were segmented into two groups based on a median split of their self-reported body image. The survey assessed a diverse array of variables, including demographic details, physiological data, resistance training routines, and psychological attributes. In this revision, we consistently use the term 'dietary habits' to ensure clear and uniform language when discussing eating patterns. Notable differences were observed in dietary habits and exercise engagement, influenced significantly by body image perceptions. Negative body image was linked to less healthy dietary habits, diminished physical activity, and worse psychological outcomes, such as increased anxiety and depression. Conversely, a positive body image was associated with healthier dietary habits, more frequent physical activity, and better psychological health. The findings suggest that interventions aimed at improving body image could be crucial for enhancing overall health within this specific demographic. Due to the non-representative nature of the study group, conclusions are cautiously presented as applicable only to similar populations engaged in strength training. This study underscores the need for holistic strategies that encourage positive body image to improve both physical and psychological health outcomes in young adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

Simple Summary: Cancer stands as a leading cause of death globally and remains a significant threat to public health in developed nations. With an anticipated rise in cancer cases, the number of survivors is also expected to increase, many of whom grapple with distorted body image perception. Addressing the common poor quality of life among cancer patients and survivors necessitates monitoring emotions and body perception to mitigate psychological burdens. Given the strain on healthcare resources, exploring automated screening methods for cancer patients is crucial. This article proposes leveraging Natural Language Processing for monitoring body image perception in enterally fed patients with head and neck or upper gastrointestinal tract cancers, offering potential advancements in care delivery and patient support within oncology settings. Background: Psycho-oncology care has emerged as a significant concern in contemporary oncology practice, given its profound impact on patient psychological well-being. Patients undergoing treatment for head–neck or upper gastrointestinal tract cancers often experience complex emotional and psychological challenges, necessitating specialized support and intervention. Traditional approaches to psycho-oncological care may be limited in their ability to comprehensively assess and address patients' needs. Therefore, exploring innovative methodologies, such as leveraging natural language processing (NLP) elements, is crucial to enhancing the effectiveness of psycho-oncological interventions. Methods: In this study, we developed a method utilizing natural language processing (NLP) elements to augment psycho-oncological care for patients with head–neck or upper gastrointestinal tract cancers. The method aimed to facilitate vocabulary, sentiment, and intensity analysis of five basic emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, and fear), as well as to explore potential areas of difficulty such as body image, pain, and self-esteem. We conducted research involving 50 patients across three treatment stages. Results: Our method facilitated the identification of characteristic features at each treatment stage, aiding in the tailoring of appropriate therapies to individual patient needs. The results offer insights valuable to psychologists and psychiatrists for expedited diagnosis and intervention, potentially influencing therapy outcomes. Additionally, the data may inform treatment decisions by addressing patient-specific concerns. Furthermore, our method holds promise for optimizing the allocation of psychological care resources, particularly at the initial stages of patient contact. Limitations: The main problem in the research was the fairly wide age range of participants, which explains the potential diversity of vocabulary. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study demonstrates the potential utility of integrating natural language processing (NLP) elements into psycho-oncological care for patients with head–neck or upper gastrointestinal tract cancers. The developed method offers a novel approach to comprehensively assessing patients' emotional states and areas of difficulty, thereby facilitating tailored interventions and treatment planning. These findings underscore the importance of continued research and innovation in psycho-oncology to enhance patient care and outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

Context Adolescence is a critical developmental stage in which increasing concerns about body image (BI) coincide with the consolidation of dietary habits (DHs). Multiple studies have sought robust associations between BI and DHs to prevent unhealthy behaviors. Objective The aim of this systematic review was to examine the available literature on the association between BI perception (BIP) and/or satisfaction (BIS) and DHs in adolescents. Data Sources A search was carried out of 5 electronic databases (PubMed, SciELO, Cochrane, Embase, and PsycInfo) using a combination of keywords (and synonyms) related to adolescence, BI, and diet. Data Extraction Data screening, extraction, and quality assessment were performed independently by 2 investigators using the PRISMA and AXIS guidelines. Data Analysis Of 2496 articles screened, 30 articles, published in English or Spanish, that evaluated the relationship between BI and DHs in adolescents aged between 10 years and 18 years, were included. A relationship between accurate BI perception in adolescents and healthy DHs was reported in 5 articles (16.2%). A relationship between overestimation of body weight in adolescents and healthy DHs was reported in 4 articles (13.3%). A relationship between underestimation of body weight and unhealthy DHs was reported in 8 articles (26.7%). In addition, 4 articles (13.3%) reported a relationship between BIS and healthy DHs. The desire to gain weight was associated with unhealthy DHs in 3 (10%) of the articles, while the desire to lose weight was related to healthy DHs in 3 (10%) of the articles and to unhealthy DHs in 3 (10%) other articles. There were also gender differences in the relationship between BIP or BIS and DHs. Conclusion Adolescents who underestimate their body weight tend to report less healthy DHs than body weight overestimators. Adolescents unsatisfied with their BI and with a drive for thinness frequently engage in DHs linked to losing weight. Systematic Review Registration PROSPERO registration no. CRD42020184625. Plain English Summary: Eating disorders significantly impact the current and future health and quality of life of affected persons, their caregivers, and society. Young people are persistently flooded with social media conceptualizations of what beauty should look like. The current study explored the relationship between how we perceive our body, perceived stress, maladaptive eating behaviours and quality of life among female medical students (n=777). Measurements included those measuring perceived body shape and body image, quality of life, eating attitudes, and self-esteem. We found that a preoccupation with weight and food, crash diets, fasting, binge eating, and purging behaviours was related to how we perceived our body shape, our quality of life and self-esteem among the study participants. This is important for female medical students and healthcare professionals because it enables them to identify students at risk of eating disorders and assist them in obtaining timely medical help, thus promoting early prevention. A study conducted on female undergraduate medical students in Bengaluru found a high prevalence of body image dissatisfaction (BID) among the participants. The study revealed that factors such as gender disparities, body dysmorphic disorder, and societal pressure to be thin contributed to the high rates of BID. The findings suggest a need for increased awareness and interventions to address body image issues among medical students, as their attitudes towards their own bodies can impact their patients' health and behaviors. However, it is important to note that the study primarily focused on female students from a single college, so the results may not be applicable to all medical students. Simple Summary: Psychological assessment of a cancer patient is a challenge due to the difficulty of the issues raised and, additionally, the lack of a sufficient number of psycho-oncologists. The article proposes a minimally invasive automatic method of this assessment using a note prepared by the patient about his body image. The proposed method allows you to determine the general attitude, the intensity of the five basic emotions (happiness, fear, sadness, anger, disgust), and potential areas of difficulty in terms of: body image, self-esteem, and acceptance of the environment. The combination of the attributes of patient's condition determined by the method can indicate the direction of support for the patient, relatives, direct medical personnel, and psycho-oncologists. Background: Head and neck cancers (H&NCs) constitute a significant part of all cancer cases. H&NC patients experience unintentional weight loss, poor nutritional status, or speech disorders. Medical interventions affect appearance and interfere with patients' self-perception of their bodies. Psychological consultations are not affordable due to limited time. Methods: We used NLP to analyze the basic emotion intensity, sentiment about one's body, characteristic vocabulary, and potential areas of difficulty in free notes. The emotion intensity research uses the extended NAWL dictionary developed using word embedding. The sentiment analysis used a hybrid approach: a sentiment dictionary and a deep recursive network. The part-of-speech tagging and domain rules defined by a psycho-oncologist determine the distinct language traits. Potential areas of difficulty were analyzed using the dictionaries method with word polarity to define a given area and the presentation of a note using bag-of-words. Here, we applied the LSA method using SVD to reduce dimensionality. A total of 50 cancer patients requiring enteral nutrition participated in the study. Results: The results confirmed the complexity of emotions in patients with H&NC in relation to their body image. A negative attitude towards body image was detected in most of the patients. The method presented in the study appeared to be effective in assessing body image perception disturbances, but it cannot be used as the sole indicator of body image perception issues. Limitations: The main problem in the research was the fairly wide age range of participants, which explains the potential diversity of vocabulary. Conclusions: The combination of the attributes of a patient's condition, possible to determine using the method for a specific patient, can indicate the direction of support for the patient, relatives, direct medical personnel, and psycho-oncologists. Introduction: Body image is the perception and attitude one holds toward one’s own body, especially, but not exclusively, one’s physical appearance. The promotion of positive body image improves people’s quality of life and behaviors related to health. Social factors, sociocultural influences, media pressure, and the pursuit of an ideal body, associated with accomplishments and happiness are among the causes of changes in the perception of body image, leading to dissatisfaction. There is very less literature on these topics among males and also medical students. Objectives: To assess body image perception and the influence of sociocultural factors on it and self-esteem among undergraduate students of a medical college. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 192 undergraduate medical students of a medical college from June 2021 to September 2021 using a predesigned pretested self-administered questionnaire in English. Results: Out of 200 students included in the study the mean age of study subjects was 19.78 ± 1.39 years, of which,107(56%) were males and 85(44%) were females. The 192 students were classified as Underweight (27(14%)), Normal weight (78(41%)), Overweight (43(22%)) and Obese I (44(23%)) according to Asian WHO BMI classification. BISS scores (which measure body image satisfaction) were the median of the six items after reverse-scoring the three positive-to-negative items which were found to be 5.5(4-7) and 53% of students showed body image dissatisfaction. 33% (63 students) of students have thin/low body fat internalization and about 77(40%) have muscular/athletic internalization.54(28%) students mostly agree about family pressure to attain the ideal appearance, 53(28%) feel pressure from peers and 75(39%) mostly agree with influence of media to attain ideal appearance. Out of the 192 students,124(64%) showed normal self-esteem, 63(33%) with low self-esteem, and 5(3%) with high self-esteem as per Rosenberg’s self-esteem score. A statistically significant association was found between BMI and body image perception and also between Body image perception with sociocultural attitudes toward the appearance and self-esteem of students. Conclusion: Body image dissatisfaction affects young students. In this study, about 53% of the students showed body image dissatisfaction. This perception of self has mainly been influenced by media (39%), family pressure (28%), and peer pressure (28%). Also, 33% of the students have low esteem with a significant association between Body image perception and self-esteem. more...

Background: Malnutrition is a global problem affecting all, irrespective of age and race. However, countries in Africa are disproportionately affected due to endemic poverty and war. The problem of malnutrition is worsened by the high burden of the human immunodeficiency virus in the region, which also significantly alters the body image of people affected. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the nutritional status and body image perception among people living with human immunodeficiency virus in a tertiary center in Southwest Nigeria. Materials and Methods: A total of 258 participants were recruited for this descriptive cross-sectional study conducted between March and July 2022 using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire and analyzed using IBM® SPSS version 23. Chi-square test was used to assess for associations between sociodemographic characteristics and the outcome variables, while kappa statistic was used to measure agreement between participants’ actual and perceived nutritional status. Results: The mean age of respondents was 44.6 ± 11 years. A Close to half (48.1%) of the respondents had normal body mass index, while 17.1% and 6.6% were obese and underweight, respectively. Most respondents (72.9%) perceived their body image as “just right,” with another 14.3% perceiving theirs as “too thin.” Of most respondents, 78.3% were satisfied with their perceived body image. Conclusion: Most of the respondents in this study had positive body image perception; however, a sizable proportion suffers from overweight and obesity, which may increase their risk of cardiovascular events. Consequently, clinic managers should encourage routine nutritional assessment and education for early detection and prevention of overnutrition in all antiretroviral therapy clinics. more...

COVID-19 infection has caused increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. Several strategies have been adopted around the world to prevent its spread. Italy underwent a long lockdown for face-to-face educational activities, which were replaced with online classes. This longitudinal study aimed to analyze the effects of COVID-19 prevention measures on physical growth and body image perception in a sample of Italian adolescents who experienced the pandemic-induced lockdown in 2020. In particular, we wished to ascertain how lifestyle changes had affected their growth rates and health. Special attention was paid to increases in adiposity indicators (BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio) and weight caused by reduced physical activity, and consequent possible dissatisfaction with body image. We assessed the impact of school closures by comparing the annual growth rate and body image perception changes of adolescents (n = 60; age = 11.3 ± 0.4 years) who experienced this isolation with those in the following years who did not experience these restrictions (n = 68; age = 11.4 ± 0.3 years). As a consequence of the lockdown, our results indicate a greater annual growth rate in weight and other indices of adiposity (p < 0.05). As the virus is continuing to evolve and propagate, larger population studies can verify and confirm our findings. In promoting health policy to prevent the ongoing prevalence of obesity in adolescents, an accurate assessment of whether the increase in obesity rates during the pandemic is to be considered a temporary trend is highly recommended. The positive association between body satisfaction, a better perception of overall fitness, and less difficulties in conducting physical tasks suggests the protective role of the components of physical activity and health-related fitness on body acceptance in a critical period of life. more...

Background: Women may experience sensations of increased weight and reduced attractiveness during pregnancy. This study aimed to evaluate the body-image perception and self-esteem of pregnant women in Saudi Arabia. Methods: We conducted a national cross-sectional survey among 651 Saudi pregnant women, from April to June 2023. The Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES) and the Body Image Questionnaire were used to assess self-esteem and body image satisfaction, respectively. The correlation between body image satisfaction and self-esteem was analyzed using Pearson’s correlation. Mean comparison tests (t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA)) were also used. Additionally, linear regression was utilized to analyze factors associated with each construct. Results: A strong positive correlation (r = 0.597) was observed between body satisfaction (mean score: 67 out of 95 [standard deviation (SD) = 12.04]) and self-esteem (mean score: 30.8 out of 40 [SD = 4.93]). Socioeconomic factors such as level of education and income, as well as smoking, and psychological and medical comorbidities, showed variable levels of association body image satisfaction and self-esteem. Moreover, self-esteem was found to be higher during respondents’ early weeks of pregnancy. The presence of psychological or medical comorbidity was independently associated with both body image and self-esteem, whereas education was found to be associated solely with self-esteem. Another model showed an independent positive relationship between body image and self-esteem. Conclusions: The current nationwide study showed a strong correlation between body satisfaction and self-esteem among pregnant Saudi women, with both scores being reasonably maintained. Initiatives aimed at smoking cessation and vigilant monitoring of pregnant women at risk for psychological and medical issues are essential to support their well-being. Furthermore, the need for exploring further culturally relevant factors is highlighted. more...

Body image (BI) is a multidimensional construct that refers to one's perceptions of and attitudes toward one's own physical characteristics. Adolescence is a critical developmental stage in which concerns about BI increase. Therefore, the present cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate body image and aesthetic body shape standards in a sample of middle school students living in China. The researchers gathered demographic information, as well as height and weight data, for their study. They used a body silhouette to assess body image perception and body shape aesthetics and calculated two indexes: BIP, which measures the accuracy of self-perception and the estimation of bodily dimensions, and BIS, which indicates the difference between an individual's perceived and ideal body images. A total of 1585 students in three grades at two middle schools were included in the study (759 = female, mean age = 13.67 ± 0.90; 839 = male, mean age = 13.70 ± 0.90). The results showed that the BIP bias rate of middle school students was 55.7%, and the BI dissatisfaction rate was 81.0%. Females tended to overestimate their body shape and desire to be thinner compared to males. Students with a higher BMI grading were more prone to underestimating their body shape and aspiring to be thinner. Furthermore, 8.6% of students chose underweight as the ideal body type for boys, while 22.6% chose underweight as the ideal body type for girls. In conclusion, there are significant gender differences in the aesthetic standards of body shape, and adolescents believe that for women, a thin body shape is beautiful. Background: Body image is an essential aspect of young girls' self-definition and individual identity and is influenced by multitude of factors including cultural, social, cognitive, affective, and biological. In recent times, excessive concern about the body image has been reported and the prevalence of body image dissatisfaction (BID) has increased among adolescent and young girls. Objectives: The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of BID, its pattern and the factors associated with it among female undergraduate students and also to assess the level of concern about their body image. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 180 female undergraduate students using a contour drawing rating scale and a body shape questionnaire to assess BID and its pattern, and the level of concern about body image, respectively. Binary logistic regression was applied to identify the factors determining body image perception. Results: The prevalence of body mage dissatisfaction was 76.7% with overweight and obesity, and media influences being significantly associated with it. Nutritional status, mother's educational status, and media influences were the determinants. Body shape concerns were found among 30.6% of the participants out of which 7.3% reported marked to moderate concerns. Conclusions: Our findings highlighted a higher prevalence of perceived dissatisfaction with the body image and also that it is not simply the outcome of sociocultural pressure to conform to a certain body type but is the result of a complex interaction between individual differences in actual body mass and preference for a thin body ideal. more...

Introduction: Stunkard’s figure rating scale is a widely used tool to assess weight status and, more recently, body image perception in people with obesity. However, large population-based studies on Europeans linking this scale’s silhouettes with measured BMI values are lacking. Therefore, we used measured weight and height data from the Swedish Obese Subjects (SOS) reference cohort to assign a mean BMI to each of the 9 Stunkard Scale silhouettes and to define silhouette cutoff values for categorizing people with obesity and overweight. Methods: A total of 1,128 participants from the SOS reference cohort were included (54% females, BMI = 25.2 [ranging from 17.6 to 45.4] ±3.8 kg/m2, and age = 50 [ranging from 36 to 62] ±7 years [means ± standard deviation]). Patients estimated their own body size by choosing a silhouette of the Stunkard Scale. A mean BMI, based on measured weight and height, was assigned to each male and female silhouette of the Stunkard Scale. Measured BMI values were compared with BMI values calculated by simple linear regression analysis. ROC analysis was used to test accuracy of discrimination and the Youden index to assess optimal cutoff. Results: Figure ratings and BMI were strongly correlated in men, r (518) = 0.76, p < 0.001 and women, r (606) = 0.80, p < 0.001. Silhouette selection significantly predicted BMI values in men, β = 16.03, t (518) = 25.30, p < 0.001, and women, β = 12.06, t (606) = 32.98, p < 0.001, and explained a significant proportion of variance in BMI values in men, R2 = 0.55, F (1, 518) = 639.98, p < 0.001, and women, R2 = 0.64, F (1, 606) = 1,087.88, p < 0.001. ROC curve analyses resulted in an optimal cutoff value of 6 for identifying people with obesity and 5 for overweight. Conclusion: Stunkard’s figure rating scale can be used with confidence to assess weight status. Silhouette selection accurately classifies subjects as overweight or obese. more...

Objective: In this study, we assessed college students' eating behaviors and determined the association between their eating behaviors and body image perception (feelings about body, shape, and weight). Methods: We surveyed college students (N = 184) enrolled at least parttime and actively living on campus during the 2019-2020 academic year. We used 4 validated surveys (EDE-Q, NEMS-P, SATAQ-3 and SATAQ-4) to collect all data. Two trained facilitators aided students in completing the surveys in the campus's nutrition lab. We used weighted linear regression to assess the association between eating behaviors (frequency of fruit, vegetables, candy, and chips consumption available in dorm rooms, and meal consumption frequency at restaurants) (independent variables) and body image perception (dependent variable). We also calculated odds ratios. Results: We found statistically significant associations between students reducing their consumption of available fruit, vegetables, candy, soda, and chips in their dorm rooms to control weight and shape, choosing meals more frequently at fast-food versus sit-down restaurants, and unhappiness with weight and shape. Conclusion: Our results may assist college campus personnel in providing students with the necessary skills to develop better eating habits and improved body image. Students with a positive body image and a healthy relationship with food are more likely to have better mental and physical health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

BACKGROUND: The term intuitive eating is a new concept that has emerged in recent years. It is a way of eating that is based on responding to the body's natural signals of hunger and satiety. OBJECTIVE: The study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between intuitive eating and eating disorders and body image perception in young adult women. METHODS: The study was conducted with 400 women aged 19–35 years. The data were collected with the Figure Rating Scale, the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2), and the Eating Attitude Test-26. RESULTS: The mean body mass index was significantly higher in individuals who misperceived their body image. While 51.4% of the participants with normal eating behavior had appropriate body image perception, 38.8% of the participants with abnormal eating behavior had appropriate body image perception. The IES-2 total score was significantly lower in women with abnormal eating behavior and overweight/obese women. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings showed that intuitive eating is negatively associated with abnormal eating behavior and obesity in young adult women and that women with low intuitive eating inclinations misperceived their body image.
