Auxin regulates many aspects of plant development and behavior, including the initiation of new outgrowth, patterning of vascular systems, control of branching, and responses to the environment. Computational models have complemented experimental studies of these processes. We review these models from two perspectives. First, we consider cellular and tissue-level models of interaction between auxin and its transporters in shoots. These models form a coherent body of results exploring different hypotheses pertinent to the patterning of new outgrowth and vascular strands. Second, we consider models operating at the level of plant organs and entire plants. We highlight techniques used to reduce the complexity of these models, which provide a path to capturing the essence of studied phenomena while running simulations efficiently.

Auxin signaling regulates growth and developmental processes in plants. The core of nuclear auxin signaling relies on just three components: TIR1/AFBs, Aux/IAAs, and ARFs. Each component is itself made up of several domains, all of which contribute to the regulation of auxin signaling. Studies of the structural aspects of these three core signaling components have deepened our understanding of auxin signaling dynamics and regulation. In addition to the structured domains of these components, intrinsically disordered regions within the proteins also impact auxin signaling outcomes. New research is beginning to uncover the role intrinsic disorder plays in auxin-regulated degradation and subcellular localization. Structured and intrinsically disordered domains affect auxin perception, protein degradation dynamics, and DNA binding. Taken together, subtle differences within the domains and motifs of each class of auxin signaling component affect signaling outcomes and specificity.

Occurrence of biogenic amines in fresh fish and fishery products constitute a significant safety concern. Ingestion of histamine is identified as the causative agent of several food poisoning incidences on an annual basis. In addition, cadaverine, putrescine and tyramine have been recognized as potentiators of histamine poisoning. Accumulation of biogenic amines in fresh fish and fishery products has been mainly attributed to growth of bacteria possessing amino acid decarboxylase activity, which is facilitated by lack of hygienic conditions and strict temperature control during their storage. To this end, the effectiveness of traditional and modern approaches to control biogenic amine accumulation has been in the epicenter of intensive study. The aim of the present review article is to update and integrate current knowledge regarding the biogenic amine content of fresh fish and fishery products as well as the capacity of traditional and emerging control strategies.

Although zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have bright prospects in wide fields like gas storage/separation, catalysis and medicine, etc., their large-scale applications are bottlenecked by the absence of their low-cost commercial production technique. Here, we report an unconventional method suitable for environmentally friendly and low-cost mass-production of ZIFs. In this method, taking the synthesis of ZIF-8 as an example, ZnO was used instead of Zn(NO3)2 in traditional solvent synthesis methods and CO2 was introduced to dissolve ZnO in aqueous solution of 2-methylimidazole (HMeim) and form water soluble salt ([ZnMeim]+[MeimCOO]-) at room temperature. Then, by removing CO2 through heating or vacuuming, Meim-ions are produced and instantaneously assemble with [ZnMeim]+s to generate ZIF-8 without any by-product. Due to the absence of strong acid anions (such as NO3− and Cl− et al.) in solution, the washing of filter cake required in the conventional approaches could be omitted and the filtrate containing only water and HMeim could be reused completely. This method is really green as no waste gas or liquid generates because CO2 and water could be recycled perfectly. It overcomes almost all bottlenecks occurred in commercial production of ZIF-8 when using traditional methods. A pilot plant was established for mass-production of ZIF-8 and hundreds kilograms of ZIF-8 was produced, which indicates that the new method is not only environmentally friendly but also low cost and commercial accessibility. It is expected that the new method would open an avenue for commercial applications of ZIFs.

There are many photovoltaic (PV) applications where lighter weight and/or bendable PV power would be beneficial. This includes the curved surfaces of buildings, buildings with weight limitations, boats, automobiles, or other portable applications. In many of these cases, the bending will be only a single occurrence at installation or the amount of bending, even if repeated, is not dramatic. This allows for crystalline silicon modules to be used. For flexible applications, the dominant material for the frontsheet is polyethylene tetrafluoroethylene (PETFE). As a fluoropolymer it resists soiling, is UV stable, and PETFE is a more mechanically durable fluoropolymer. However, in the interests of keeping costs down, less expensive alternative polymers are desirable. In this study, highly accelerated ultraviolet light and heat stresses are applied to candidate materials and the degradation kinetics are determined to provide information to evaluate their suitability for use in a PV application.

Soils containing organic matter exhibit low shear strength and high compressibility. Lime stabilisation has been shown to improve the engineering properties of clayey soils. An attempt was made to study the effect of organic matter (starch and peat) on the shear strength of lime-stabilised clayey soils subjected to longer curing periods (up to 180 days). Most studies have reported the strength behaviour of lime-stabilised organic soils up to 60 days. Vane shear tests were carried out on artificially prepared organic soil mixtures treated with 6% lime after different curing periods (0, 7, 30, 60, 90 and 180 days). The results indicate that the improving effect of lime is deteriorated in the presence of organic matter as the curing period increases. It was observed that, for lime-stabilised clayey soils containing organic matter, the strength seemed to increase up to 30 days, after which it ceased. The strength reduction in lime-stabilised clayey soils containing organic matter depended on the pH and functional groups present in the soil. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of cured samples was also carried out to examine the microstructural changes responsible for the strength change in lime-stabilised clayey soils.

The loading strategy of cocatalysts affects its activity exerting and atom utilization. Here, a novel strategy for loading precious metal (Pt) cocatalysts by means of ultrathin N-doped carbon layer is reported. The strategy is based on a pyrolysis process of predesigned N-containing polymers and Pt complexes on hard-template surface, during which Pt can be reduced by carbon from pyrolysis at high temperatures. Finally, the hollow TiO2 composite with stable and dispersed Pt on its inner surface was prepared. It shows an ultrahigh photocatalytic H2 production activity as high as 25.7 mmol h−1 g−1 with methanol as sacrificial regent, and displays an apparent quantum yield as 13.2%. The improved photocatalytic activity and stability can be attributed to the highly dispersed and ultrafine Pt nanoparticles, enhanced interaction between Pt-species and carbon support, fast photo-excited electron transport from the high graphitization degree of NC layers, ample oxygen vacancies/defects, as well as the manipulated local charge distribution of Pt/NC-layer configuration. Additionally, the universality of the proposed strategy was demonstrated by replacing metal sources (such as, Ru and Pd). This work presented a promising strategy for the design and development of novel photocatalysts, which shows a broad application prospect.

Abstract: In this study, children with vitamin B12 deficiency anemia (V-B12DA) and control subjects were evaluated for erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase enzyme activities, glutathione, malondialdehyde, serum total sialic acid, total antioxidant status, cobalt, chromium, copper, selenium, vanadium, zinc, iron, lead, magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphorus levels, and the associations of these variables were assessed. The study included 50 children with V-B12DA and 50 control subjects. It was found that the V-B12DA group was significantly lower than the control group, with regard to the mean±the standard error of the mean levels of cobalt (0.089±0.009; 0.058±0.0063 μmol/L, p12 (427.20±21.45; 157.08±3.96 pg/mL, p12DA, significantly linear correlations were observed between cobalt – vitamin B12 (r=0.334; p=0.025), vanadium – MCV (r=0.315; p=0.017), vitamin B12 – MCV (r=−0.297; p=0.026). The findings of the study indicated that the levels of cobalt, vanadium significantly associated with traditional vitamin B12-deficiency parameters. Vitamin B12 and MCV should be measured together with cobalt, vanadium for monitoring the vitamin B12 deficiency anemia.

Chemotherapy can result in toxic side effects in the brain. Intake of marine-based omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), alter brain fatty acids, potentially improving brain function. However, it is unclear if alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the plant-based n-3, affects brain PUFAs during chemotherapy. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of dietary ALA, EPA and DHA, with high or low sucrose, on brain PUFAs in a mouse model of chemotherapy. Secondarily, the use of liver PUFAs as surrogate measures of brain PUFAs was examined. Lipid peroxidation (4-HNE) and neurotrophic markers (BDNF) were assessed. Female C57Bl/6 mice (n = 90) were randomized to 1 of 5 diets (high EPA + DHA/high or low sucrose, high ALA/high or low sucrose, or control with no EPA + DHA/low ALA/low sucrose) and injected with doxorubicin-based chemotherapy or saline. Brain EPA and DHA were greater (p < 0.0001) with high EPA + DHA diets, regardless of sucrose; there were no significant differences in brain PUFAs between high ALA diets and control. Chemotherapy-treated mice had higher brain and liver DHA (p < 0.05) and lower brain and liver linoleic acid (p < 0.0001). Brain n-3 and n-6 PUFAs were strongly correlated with liver n-3 (r = 0.8214, p < 0.0001) and n-6 PUFAs (r = 0.7568, p < 0.0001). BDNF was correlated with brain total PUFAs (r = 0.36; p < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary ALA in proportions approximately two times greater than consumed by humans did not appreciably increase brain n-3 PUFAs compared to low ALA intake. Liver PUFAs may be a useful surrogate marker of brain PUFAs in this mouse model.

Although we develop influenza immunity from an early age, it is insufficient to prevent future infection with antigenically novel strains. One proposed way to generate long-term protective immunity against a broad range of influenza virus strains is to boost responses to the conserved epitopes on the hemagglutinin, the major surface glycoprotein on the influenza virus. Influenza-specific humoral immunity comprises a large fraction of the overall immune memory in humans, and it has been long recognized that preexisting immunity to influenza shapes the response to subsequent influenza infections and vaccinations. However, the mechanisms by which preexisting immunity modulates the response to influenza vaccination are still not completely understood. Using a set of mathematical models, we explore several hypotheses that may contribute to diminished boosting of antibodies to conserved epitopes after repeated vaccinations.

In this study, CO₂ conversion to acetate and CH₄ was achieved in a flow-through laboratory-scale microbial electrosynthesis (MES) cell composed of a 3D conductive polylactic acid (cPLA) lattice cathode with electrodeposited metal electrocatalyst coatings. The MES cell with a bare cPLA cathode showed the poorest performance with the lowest H₂ and CH₄ production rates and low Coulombic efficiency. This was ascribed to a poor electrocatalytic activity of cPLA towards H₂ production and high electrode resistivity. When the cPLA electrode was modified with metal coatings, the CH₄, acetate and H₂ production rate increased significantly, with the following trend: cPLA < Ni < NiFe < NiFeMn. The better performance of the metal-coated cPLA in terms of CH₄ production was attributed to the lower electrical resistance, enhanced H₂ production and enhanced electron transfer between the cathode and the biofilm. At the cell potential of 2.8 V, the best-performing NiFeMn cPLA cathode showed stable production of CH₄ (50 ± 6 mL d⁻¹), acetate (185 ± 27 mg d⁻¹), and H₂ (545 ± 175 mL d⁻¹) at close to 100% Coulombic efficiency.

Auxin is a crucial growth regulator that governs plant development and responses to environmental perturbations. It functions at the heart of many developmental processes, from embryogenesis to organ senescence, and is key to plant interactions with the environment, including responses to biotic and abiotic stimuli. As remarkable as auxin is, it does not act alone, but rather solicits the help of, or is solicited by, other endogenous signals, including the plant hormones abscisic acid, brassinosteroids, cytokinins, ethylene, gibberellic acid, jasmonates, salicylic acid, and strigolactones. The interactions between auxin and other hormones occur at multiple levels: hormones regulate one another's synthesis, transport, and/or response; hormone-specific transcriptional regulators for different pathways physically interact and/or converge on common target genes; etc. However, our understanding of this crosstalk is still fragmentary, with only a few pieces of the gigantic puzzle firmly established. In this review, we provide a glimpse into the complexity of hormone interactions that involve auxin, underscoring how patchy our current understanding is.

Hemagglutinins (HAs) are the receptor-binding and membrane fusion glycoproteins of influenza viruses. They recognize sialic acid-containing, cell-surface glycoconjugates as receptors but have limited affinity for them, and, as a consequence, virus attachment to cells requires their interaction with several virus HAs. Receptor-bound virus is transferred into endosomes where membrane fusion by HAs is activated at pH between 5 and 6.5, depending on the strain of virus. Fusion activity requires extensive rearrangements in HA conformation that include extrusion of a buried "fusion peptide" to connect with the endosomal membrane, form a bridge to the virus membrane, and eventually bring both membranes close together. In this review, we give an overview of the structures of the 16 genetically and antigenically distinct subtypes of influenza A HA in relation to these two functions in virus replication and in relation to recognition of HA by antibodies that neutralize infection.

Charge transport at the molecular scale builds the cornerstone of molecularelectronics (ME), a novel paradigm aiming at the realization of nanoscaleelectronics via tailored molecular functionalities. Biomolecular electronics,lying at the borderline between physics, chemistry and biology, can be con-sidered as a sub-field of ME. In particular, the potential applications of DNAoligomers either as template or as active device element in ME have stronglydrawn the attention of both experimentalist and theoreticians in the past years.While exploiting the self-assembling and self-recognition properties of DNAbased molecular systems is meanwhile a well-established field, the poten-tial of such biomolecules as active devices is much less clear mainly due tothe poorly understood charge conduction mechanisms. One key componentin any theoretical description of charge migration in biomolecular systems,and hence in DNA oligomers, is the inclusion of conformational fluctuationsand their coupling to the transport process. The treatment of such a problemaffords to consider dynamical effects in a non-perturbative way in contrastto, e.g., conventional bulk materials. Here we present an overview of recentwork aiming at combining molecular dynamic simulations and electronicstructure calculations with charge transport in coarse-grained effective model Hamiltonians. This hybrid methodology provides a common theoretical start-ing point to treat charge transfer/transport in strongly structurally fluctuatingmolecular-scale physical systems.

The aggregation of amyloid peptides is closely related to the pathogenesisof degenerative diseases. More and more evidence implies that the protofibrillar intermediates rather than the mature amyloid fibrils are the toxicspecies related to the membrane disruption. In this work we found that theself-assembling intermediates of Aβ33-42 during early aggregation are ableto break down the liposome. During the process of amyloid peptide (Aβ33-42)intermediate binding to liposome, the β-sheet secondary structure of peptidetook change on the molecular level which was characterized by circulardichroism (CD) spectra. The small micelles were formed due to the disruptionof amyloid peptide, and further to grow into big irregular complexes withfurther incubation, which is characterized by the assay of disrupting liposomemembrane and atomic force microscopy (AFM). This founding paved the wayto understand the interactions between the amyloid peptide and membranes,and support the amyloid peptide nanostructure formed in the early stage ofaggregation has good affinity with membrane.

The phenomena that results on supramolecular aggregations of bimetallic[Pt2L4] and [AuL2] are reviewed. Supramolecular [AuL2]n (n = 2,3) wereobserved in some cases in solution as a result of Au(I)···Au(I) aurophilicinteractions, which also direct the assembly of oligomeric structures in crys-tal phase. Analogously, Pt(II)···Pt(II) attraction accounts for the assembly of[Pt2L4]nsupramolecules which can result on 1D semiconductive arrangementsin crystal phase and direct the formation of 1D nanofibres on surfaces. Finally,oxidation of [Pt2L4] to [Pt2L4I]n produces highly conductive polymers thatcan reversibly assemble/disassemble into [Pt2L4] and [Pt2L4I2]. Such out-standing ability results on an unprecedented processability that enables MMXpolymers for technological applications as molecular wires.

Polymer bonded explosives (PBXs) have high energy density, excellent mechanical properties and better thermal stability. In this study, droplet microfluidic technology was used to successfully prepare HMX/TATB microspheres. The effects of different binder types and binder concentrations on the morphology of the microspheres were studied, and results proved that NC/GAP (1:4) provides particles a regular spherical morphology and good dispersion. Subsequently, the influence of the concentration of the dispersed phase and the flow rate of the continuous phase on the particle size distribution of the microspheres was fully studied. The microspheres had narrow particle size distribution and high spherical shape. Under optimized process conditions, HMX/TATB microspheres were prepared and compared with the physical mixtures. The X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, flow properties, bulk density, and mechanical sensitivity of the samples were also studied. Results showed that the crystal form of the microspheres remains unchanged, and the binder maintains good compatibility with explosives. In addition, the fluidity, bulk density, real density and safety performance of the microspheres are remarkably better than the physical mixture. This study provides a new method for preparing PBX with narrow particle size distribution, high spherical shape, excellent dispersion and high bulk density.

Background G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) transduce external stimuli into the cell by G proteins via an allosteric mechanism. Agonist binding to the receptor stimulates GDP/GTP exchange within the heterotrimeric G protein complex, whereas recent structures of GPCR–G protein complexes revealed that the H5, S1 and S2 domains of Gα are involved in binding the active receptor, earlier studies showed that a short peptide analog derived from the C-terminus (H5) of the G protein transducin (Gt) is sufficient to stabilize rhodopsin in an active form. Methods We have used Molecular Dynamics simulations along with biological evaluation by means of radio-ligand binding assay to study the interactions between Gαi-derived peptide (G-peptide) and the µ-opioid receptor (µOR). Results Here, we show that a Gαi-derived peptide of 12 amino acids binds the µ-opioid receptor and acts as an allosteric modulator. The Gαi-derived peptide increases µOR affinity for its agonist morphine in a dose-dependent way. Conclusions These results indicate that the GPCR–Gα peptide interaction observed so far for only rhodopsin can be extrapolated to µOR. In addition, we show that the C-terminal peptide of the Gαi subunit is sufficient to stabilize the active conformation of the receptor. Our approach opens the possibility to investigate the GPCR–G protein interface with peptide modification.

Synthesis of the C19-truncated maltepolide E has been accomplished via a diene–ene RCM strategy without damage to the C11–C14 alkenyl epoxy unit. Upon release of the C17-OH group, it attacked at the C14 position with double bond migration and epoxide ring-opening to furnish the C19-truncated maltepolide A and B as proposed for the biosynthesis of maltepolides. Preliminary cytotoxicity data of the synthesized C19-truncated maltepolides against L929 mouse fibroblast cell line suggest irrelevance of the vinyl epoxide and importance of the conjugated dienyl keto unit for the observed anticancer activity.

This paper reports on a numerical study into the crack-dependent behaviour of a steel-plate girder bridge strengthened with carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer sheets. Progressive cracking, which represented fatigue-induced damage, was simulated from up to 10% of the girder depth. Finite-element analysis was used to evaluate the performance of the control, damaged and strengthened cases subject to standard US highway fatigue loading. The efficacy of polymer strengthening was also examined from a strength perspective, using the load factor rating method and the load and resistance factor rating method. Localised fatigue cracking caused a stress concentration along the girder and its progression rate was related to the degree of web fracture. The damage of the tensile flange was more influential in reducing the flexural capacity of the girder relative to damage of the web. The strengthening decreased the stress ranges, thereby increasing the fatigue life of the girder, and enhanced the maximum average daily traffic capacity. Reliability modelling indicated a transition in failure rates before and after 3% cracking in the girder, supporting the extended functional time resulting from strengthening.

To better understand the benzene alkylation with chloroaluminate ionic liquids (ILs) as catalyst, the interfacial properties between the benzene/butene binary reactants and chloroaluminate ILs with varying cation alky chain length and different anions were investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results indicate that ILs can obviously improve the interfacial width, solubility and diffusion of reactants compared to H2SO4. The longer alkyl chains of cations present a density enrichment at the interface and protrude into the binary reactants phase. Furthermore, the ILs consisting of 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium cations ([Omim]+) and the stronger acidity heptachlorodialuminateanions ([Al2Cl7]–) are more beneficial to promote the interfacial width and facilitate the dissolution and diffusion of benzene in both the IL bulk and the interfacial region in comparison to the ones with shorter alkyl chains cations and weaker acidity anions. The information gives us a better guideline for the design of ILs for benzene alkylation.

Statement of problem Denture stomatitis and other oral infections are prevalent in denture wearers and can be treated effectively with an antimicrobial agent such as a silver nanoparticle-based polymer. However, the physical properties of the denture should not be adversely affected by the addition. Purpose The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis of in vitro studies was to analyze the effects of a silver nanoparticle-based antimicrobial resin on the properties of polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA)–based denture resin. Material and methods Full-length English language articles reporting silver nanoparticle-based PMMA resin were included in the review, with no limitation on the year till May 2020. Scopus, Web of Sciences, and PubMed databases were accessed for the literature survey. The review was formulated based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and used the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines and risk of bias Cochrane tool for quality assessment. A meta-analysis of flexural strength was performed by using a random-effects model at a 95% confidence interval. The other properties were analyzed descriptively. Results Silver nanoparticle reinforcement caused considerable differences in the inherent physical material properties of PMMA. Conclusions An antimicrobial polymer nanocomposite formulation can either negatively affect or bring no improvement to the physical properties of denture resin.

Abstract. Carotenoid intake is associated with low mortality and cancer risks; data on non-provitamin carotenoid intake is limited especially in Asians. We aimed to estimate carotenoid intake in Japanese adult women. Carotenoid content database comprises 196 food items, including 39 fruits, 87 vegetables and mushrooms, and 11 seaweeds, and was established using data from the literature and analyses of foods available in Japan. We surveyed the intake of these foods in Japanese women aged 21–56 years (n=109). Total intake of 7 carotenoids (mean±SD [range]) was 7,450±3,840 (1,160–21,300) μg/day; α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene, and fucoxanthin represented 4.3%, 23%, 3.4%, 15%, 2.0%, 39%, and 13% of total intake, respectively. Lutein intake was 1,132±686 (294–3,490) μg/day; its best sources were spinach, cucumber, chicken egg, green onion, and Chinese chives, representing 51% of total intake. Lutein can be obtained from a variety of sources. Thus, lutein intake levels did not vary widely among individuals and very few individuals consumed insufficient levels of lutein. Intake of zeaxanthin, lycopene, and fucoxanthin was 149±93 (2–479), 2,890±2,970 (0–17,100), and 980±1,230 (0–5,660) μg/day, respectively. Their intake required rich sources including chicken egg for zeaxanthin (52%); tomato products for lycopene (98%), and wakame seaweed for fucoxanthin (76%). The carotenoid content database including all food items consumed in Japan will be helpful for further investigations on carotenoid intake and its health benefits.

Tomato is one of the most important vegetable crops in the world and is a model plant used to study the ripening of climacteric fleshy fruit. During the ripening process of tomato fruit, flavor and aroma metabolites, color, texture and plant hormones undergo significant changes. However, low temperatures delayed the ripening process of tomato fruit, inhibiting flavor compounds and ethylene production. Metabolomics and transcriptomics analyses of tomato fruit stored under low temperature (LT, 5°C) and room temperature (RT, 25°C) were carried out to investigate the effects of storage temperature on the physiological changes in tomato fruit after harvest. The results of transcriptomics changes revealed that the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in tomato fruit ripening, including several kinds of transcription factors (TFs) (TCP, WRKY, MYB and bZIP), enzymes involved in cell wall metabolism [beta-galactosidase (β-GAL), pectinesterase (PE) and pectate lyase (PL), cellulose and cellulose synthase (CESA)], enzymes associated with fruit flavor and aroma [acetyltransferase (AT), malic enzyme (ME), lipoxygenase(LOX), aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and hexokinase (HK)], genes associated with heat stress protein 70 and genes involved in the production of plant hormones such as Ethylene responsive factor 1 (ERF1), Auxin/indoleacetic acids protein (AUX/IAA), gibberellin regulated protein. Based on the above results, we constructed a regulatory network model of the effects of different temperatures during the fruit ripening process. According to the analysis of the metabolomics results, it was found that the contents of many metabolites in tomato fruit were greatly affected by storage temperature, including, organic acids (L-tartaric acid, a-hydroxyisobutyric acid and 4-acetamidobutyric acid), sugars (melezitose, beta-D-lactose, D-sedoheptulose 7-phosphate, 2-deoxyribose 1-phosphate and raffinose) and phenols (coniferin, curcumin and feruloylputrescine). This study revealed the effects of storage temperature on postharvest tomato fruit and provided a basis for further understanding of the molecular biology and biochemistry of fruit ripening.

Abstract. Chronic, systemic inflammation, which is associated with obesity and numerous other diseases, impairs iron status by increasing hepcidin concentration. Inflammation also decreases the concentration of transferrin, the main iron transport protein and a negative acute phase protein, which is indirectly assessed by measuring total iron binding capacity (TIBC). However, the contribution of diet-induced inflammation has not been studied. Data from two studies, namely Diet and Inflammation and Selenium and Inflammation Studies (total n=98) were used to assess the associations among Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) scores derived from three-day dietary records, body mass index (BMI=weight[kg]/height[m]2), inflammatory and hematological markers among young adults with normal-weight, overweight or obesity. Subjects’ diets were also categorized as less inflammatory diets (LID) and inflammatory diets (ID) using cluster analysis. Independent t-test and regression analyses were used to assess associations in the data. Intakes of iron, proteins, fat, fiber, and calories were higher in the LID group compared to the ID group (p0.05). Higher DII score was associated with increasing CRP (β+SE=0.23+0.07, p=0.002) and lower TIBC (β+SE=−8.46+3.44, p=0.02), independent of BMI category. The LID diet was associated with higher TIBC (β+SE=29.87+10.75, p=0.007) compared to the ID diet. In conclusion, inflammatory diets may impair iron status by reducing the iron binding capacity of transferrin.

Recently, functional molecules such as Polydopamine (PDA), Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and heparin have been widely studied in the field of surface modification of magnesium (Mg) alloy stents for better degradation behavior and biocompatibility, but their further application is limited by undesirable anticoagulant function, uncontrollable degradation and easy bleeding, respectively. Regarding to this consideration, a magnesium Fluoride/Polydopamine/Sulphonated hyaluronic acid (MgF2/PDA/S-HA) composite coating was successfully prepared by applying S-HA with sulfur content of 9.71 wt% on the surface of ZE21B alloy in this study. The results showed that the composite coating with a unique mesh structure not only inherited the anticoagulant effect of sulfonic acid group and the excellent cyto-compatibility of S-HA with high sulfur content, but also significantly improved the corrosion performance of ZE21B alloy. These results indicate a great application potential of the composite coating in the field of cardiovascular biomaterials.

Adsorptive removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater is very important, and the key is the development of efficient sorbents. In this work, oxygenated alkynyl carbon materials (OACMs) were synthesized via mechanochemical reaction of CaC2 and a carbonate (CaCO3, Na2CO3, or NaHCO3) at ambient temperature. The resultant OACMs are micro mesoporous carbon nanomaterials with high specific area (>648 m2 g−1), highly crosslinked texture, and rich alkynyl and oxygenated groups. The OACMs exhibit excellent Hg(II) adsorption due to the soft acid-soft base interaction between alkynyl and Hg(II), and OACM-3 derived from CaC2 and NaHCO3 has the saturated Hg(II) adsorbance of 483.9 mg g−1 along with good selectivity and recyclability. The adsorption is mainly chemisorption following the Langmuir mode. OACM-3 also shows high adsorbance for other heavy metal ions, e.g. 256.6 mg g−1 for Pb(II), 232.4 mg g−1 for Zn(II), and 198.7 mg g−1 for Cu(II). This work expands the mechnochemical reaction of CaC2 with carbonates and possibly other oxyanionic salts, provides a new synthesis approach for functional alkynyl carbon materials with excellent adsorption performance for heavy metal ions, as well as a feasible approach for CO2 resource utilization.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are nanoporous crystalline polymers with densely conjugated structures. This work discovers that imine-linked COFs exhibit remarkable photodegradation efficiency to azo dyes dissolved in water. Visible light generates different types of radicals from COFs, and superoxide radicals break N N bonds in dye molecules, resulting in 100% degradation of azo dyes within 1 h. In contrast, these dyes cannot be degraded by conventionally used photocatalysts, for example, TiO2. Importantly, the COF photocatalysts can be recovered from the dye solutions and re-used to degrade azo dyes for multiple times without loss of degradation efficiency. This work provides an efficient strategy to degrade synthetic dyes, and we expect that COFs with designable structures may use as new photocatalysts for other important applications.

Riverine transport of nutrients and carbon from inland waters to the coastal and finally the open ocean alters marine primary production (PP) and carbon (C) uptake regionally and globally. So far, this process has not been fully represented and evaluated in the state-of-the-art Earth system models. Here we assess changes in marine PP and C uptake projected under the Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 climate scenario using the Norwegian Earth system model, with four riverine transport configurations for nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, silicon, and iron), carbon, and total alkalinity: deactivated, fixed at a recent-past level, coupled to simulated freshwater runoff, and following four plausible future scenarios. The inclusion of riverine nutrients and carbon at the 1970 level improves the simulated contemporary spatial distribution of annual mean PP and air–sea CO2 fluxes relative to observations, especially on the continental margins (5.4 % reduction in root mean square error (RMSE) for PP) and in the North Atlantic region (7.4 % reduction in RMSE for C uptake). While the riverine nutrients and C input is kept constant, its impact on projected PP and C uptake is expressed differently in the future period from the historical period. Riverine nutrient inputs lessen nutrient limitation under future warmer conditions as stratification increases and thus lessen the projected decline in PP by up to 0.66 ± 0.02 Pg C yr−1 (29.5 %) globally, when comparing the 1950–1999 with the 2050–2099 period. The riverine impact on projected C uptake depends on the balance between the net effect of riverine-nutrient-induced C uptake and riverine-C-induced CO2 outgassing. In the two idealized riverine configurations the riverine inputs result in a weak net C sink of 0.03–0.04 ± 0.01 Pg C yr−1, while in the more plausible riverine configurations the riverine inputs cause a net C source of 0.11 ± 0.03 Pg C yr−1. It implies that the effect of increased riverine C may be larger than the effect of nutrient inputs in the future on the projections of ocean C uptake, while in the historical period increased nutrient inputs are considered the largest driver. The results are subject to model limitations related to resolution and process representations that potentially cause underestimation of impacts. High-resolution global or regional models with an adequate representation of physical and biogeochemical shelf processes should be used to assess the impact of future riverine scenarios more accurately.

Chitosan (CS) is a natural and biopolymer that are suitable biomedical properties such as; biocompatibility, non-toxicity, biodegradability and bioactive polymer that’s reason with a very large application (fabrication of biomedical scaffolds, implants). Some of the biocompatible thermoplastic polymers (PLA, PEEK, PLGA, PE, PP, PMMA, PET and etc.) are most widely used in biomedical field as per their properties from last two decades. Poly-vinyl chloride (PVC) thermoplastic polymer are most widely used in medical field but there are some limitations of their uses. For enhancement of PVC thermoplastic polymers properties sometimes add some bioactive and biocompatible fillers or other bioactive thermoplastic polymers. Abstract In recent years, there has been a surge in interest in developing new polymeric materials with high performance and low cost. With increased environmental awareness, research has focused on eco-friendly materials, with terms like “renewable,” “recyclable,” “sustainable,” and “biodegradable” becoming important features of the materials, Polymer blends can provide products with a wider range of useful qualities than single polymer equivalents. In this study, Polymer blend films were prepared using dextrin at different compositions of (PVA- PMMA-PAAm) by solvent casting method. The prepared blend films were flexible and transparent and characterized using was examined by scanning electron microscopy to examine the surface morphology of the samples that show the good distribution of starch in the blend, while FT-IR was used to identify the active groups, which refer to the interaction among the materials. Also, we have studied the optical properties and recording the absorption spectrum with a visible ultraviolet spectrophotometer. Absorption spectra were recorded in the wavelength range of 200–1100 nm. The absorbance and optical conductivity were increased by dextrin additive, while the transmittance and energy gap decreased. Based on the overall results, the prepared films can be used in drug delivery and optical devices.

Nowadays, environmental sustainability is the responsible of engineering community for which the usage of waste or recycling is essential towards ecological sustainability, for which green materials are considered widely in all sectors. Because of the significance of characteristic filler supported composites in the advancement of lightweight materials, this research exploration centers around utilizing biodegradable garbage such as used tea dust powder reduces the impact of environmental pollution. In this study, effect of organic residue, tea dust is effectively recycled/utilized for fabricating polymer composite to find its suitability in engineering applications. Epoxy polymer is considered as matrix material and different volume fractions of used tea dust powders (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 vol%) are used as reinforcement. Hand-layup approach is adopted for fabricating the polymer composite and the samples are tested for their mechanical properties viz., impact, flexural and tensile strength. Based on the mechanical strength the best combination is found to be 40% vol. in epoxy matrix; higher addition than 40% reduces the strength due to lower bonding between the powders and matrix.

A particular attention should be paid to isolation, characterization, and assessment of bioactive flavonoids, especially for anti-arthritic activity. The slurry of adsorbent (silica gel; 60–120 lattice) was blended in n-hexane to form a uniform slurry, and this was then employed as a fixed-stage adsorbent. Butanolic solution (10 g) was dissolved in the minimum volume of butanol, and then adsorbed on silica gel (60–120 mesh) while still wet. The wet powder was then dried, and the separated liquid phase was collected and applied to the column to try to isolate possible phytoconstituents. A whole plate full of fractions was monitored simultaneously on a TLC plate with a mixture of chloroform:methanol:water (68:30:02) as the solvent system. Six fractions (F1-F6) were generated after the colours of F1 and F2 were mixed next to each other, and after Rf was discovered in F3. A separate group of six animals was created for the survey, which was made up of five treatment groups and one control group. It was concluded that yellow crystalline solid luteolin was obtained as a result, with the Shinoda test confirming that it was a flavonoid. Acid pretreatment is one of the most widely used fractionation processes for lignocellulosic biomass. In this study, effect of mineral acids (SA, HA, and NA) on recovery of reducing sugar from coconut coir was studied. The independent variables such as reaction time (X1, min) and concentration of acid (X2, % w/w) were optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for maximum yield of reducing sugar. In this study, 10% w/v of coir was pretreated under various conditions of X1 and X2 by maintaining a constant temperature (121oC). A maximum reducing sugar yield greater than 55% was observed for acid pretreatment.

The prosthetic socket base material must have exhibited good mechanical properties. An experimental investigation about the behavior of different fibers reinforced laminated composite materials were done. This work has been done on seven laminated composites which were prepared by the Vacuum bagging technique from Polyester resin as a bonding matrix and reinforced with (Jute, Glass, Carbon, Perlon) fibers. Laminated specimens were characterized by mechanical tensile tests such as (Tensile Strength, Young’s Modulus, Elongation Percentage) and physical test (density) to measure specific strength and specific modulus. SEM test also had been studied for different laminated composite. The results of experimental work showed that the mechanical properties were changed with the type and number of reinforcing layers. So, the results showed that the best laminated composite specimens have three layers of Jute with four layers of Carbon fiber. Where tensile strength and modulus of elasticity reach (162 MPa. and 3.60 GPa.) respectively. And specific strength and specific modulus reach to (134 MPa.cm3/gm–2.544 GPa.cm3/gm). The smoothness of the fractured surface will increase, indicating a brittle to semi-ductile transformation, according to SEM results.

Recent advances in nanotechnology have witnessed tremendous progress concerning nanofiber synthesis and practical applications. Electrospinning is a simple, versatile, and cost-effective technology that relies on electrostatic repulsions between surface charges to continuously fabricate various scalable assemblies from a wide range of raw materials (polymers, ceramics, nanoparticles, carbon nanomaterials, gels, etc.) with diameters down to macro-nano scale. Nanofibers prepared by electrospinning possess remarkable large and specific surface area to volume ratio, interconnected and tunable structures, diverse morphologies, physio-chemical and mechanical properties. In this paper, Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers with different concentrations and under constant electrospinning conditions have been prepared and characterized. The increase of the PVDF polymeric concentration improved the morphological structure of the PVDF nanofibers due to the enhanced molecular chain entanglement which allows the stretching and elongation of the fibers during the electrospinning process. At higher PVDF concentration, the fiber diameters become thinner and beadless nanofiber mats are obtained. Finally, the potential practical applications of electrospun PVDF nanofibers are addressed in this paper.

Towards environmental sustainability and reducing the environmental degradation new materials are to be identified for usage in commercial and medical fields. Biodegradable polymers are the solution to that which reduces the effect of harmful polymers on environmental pollution. Polylactic acid (PLA) is the most broadly utilized ecological polymer but their limitations such as low glass transition temperature makes it unsuitable for high temperature applications and has low thermal stability and impact resistance than other polymers. In order to improve these properties reinforcements are done to improve their mechanical, thermal, wear and corrosion behavior thereby making it suitable for wider applications in automotive and biomedical applications. In this paper, an extensive review is being carried out to study the different fabrication methods, various reinforcements added to improve the mechanical performance of the various PLA based composites.

The aim of this study is to provide a review on silanized composite performance when exposed in a complex wet aqueous environment and the role of titanium coupling agent as a more stable and reinforcement material in the construction of dental composites. Silanes are considered as the most dominant materials used for surface modification of the filler added to the polymer material in dental applications. Due to the presence of silica in the silane structure, so, the silane coupling agent were considered to be more effective in modifying materials which are consisting of silica because of the similarity in their ordered structure. Silanes are relatively characterized by dehydration inside the oral aqueous environment. On the other hand, titanate coupling agents are effective in serving at a wet environment, because its ability to react with the positive proton available on the surface of the filler (H+). TCAs are superior in performance in comparison to silane by creating a strong internal bonding between the filler and polymer matrix, and having a significant effect on the dispersion and resolving of particles agglomeration and good hydrolytic stability inside the mouth. This paper presents a comparative study between the effects of silane coupling agents against the TCAs performance in oral environment.

This research explores a segment of the mechanical, thermal & physical characteristics of a polymer polypropylene (PP) mixture including low density polyethylene (LDPE). There were mixing syntheses (pure PP, 25 LDPE/75PP, 50LDPE/50PP, 75LDPE/25LDPE, pure PP) that were examined. As outcome, the expansion of LDPE to PP has decreased, with improved thickness, elasticity, bending efficiency, versatile modulus and hardness. In a (25LDPE/75PP) arrangement the prevailing elasticity was achieved while the (50LDPE/50PP) synthesis was attributed to ideal bent efficiency. High density polyethylene (HDPE) blowing in different proportions PP/polyethylene (PEs) can remove sorting course employed during even recycling course. PP has interesting features like outstanding process ability &tolerance to chemicals. Inadequate versatility, however, limits its usage in specific applications. Mixing PP with relative PEs may enhance its versatility. Universal kinetics of PP crystallization have been affected greatly by the existence of PEs of various structures of the ramifications. Existence of LDPE reduced overall summation ratio while HDPE increased the process of crystallization. No negative effect was observed in the studied parameter range on mechanical performance and the related crystallinity.

A novel medicinal plant (GotuKola) based proton conducting polymer electrolytes (synthetic polymer (PVA)/ medicinal plant Cenetella Asiatica (CA)/ NH4I) were prepared and characterized via Solution Casting Technique for construction of Proton (H+) ion battery. Their structural, thermal, vibrational and electrical properties were characterized by XRD, DSC, FTIR and AC impedance analysis. The increase in amorphous nature/ decrease in crystalline nature of the prepared polymer membranes have been confirmed by X – ray diffraction analysis. The low Tg value of the maximumionic conducting (σ) polymer membrane was characterized by DSC analysis. Vibrational spectra of prepared polymer membranes were characterized by FTIR analysis. From the AC impedance analysis, 1 g PVA: 400 mg CA: 300 mg NH4I has the highest ionic (H+) conductivity as 2.11 × 10−3 Scm−1at ambient temperature. The electrochemical stability window of the highest ionic conductivity (σ) polymer membrane is 3.29 V. All the acquired outcomes recommend that PVA/ Centella Asiatica/ NH4I based polymer electrolytes are suitable materials for electrochemical device applications (battery, fuel cell and gas sensors etc). The highest ionic conductivity (σ) membrane has been used to construct the primary proton (H+) ion battery. From the fabrication of primary proton ion (H+) battery, the open-circuit voltage is found to be 1.9 V.

A non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process was used to fabricate a series of sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) membranes blending with different concentrations of SBA-15-g-PSPA with the applications in the ultrafiltration (UF) process. SBA-15 was modified with 3-methacrylate-propyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) to form SBA-15-g-MPS. It was further modified with the charge tailorable polymer chains by reacting with 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt. The nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed and finger-like channels were developed within the membrane. The adding of surface modified SBA-15-g-PSPA nanoparticles has significantly improved membrane water permeability, hydrophilicity, and antifouling properties. The pure water fluxes of the composite SPES membranes were significantly higher than the pristine SPES membrane. For the membrane containing 5% (mass) of SBA-15-g-PSPA (MSSPA5), the pure water flux was increased dramatically to 402.15 L∙m–2∙h–1, which is ∼ 1.5 times that of MSSPA0 (268.0 L∙m–2∙h–1). The high flux rate was achieved with 3% (mass) of SBA-15 nanoparticles with retained high rejection ratio 98% for natural organic matter. The results indicate that the fashioned composite membrane comprising SBA-15-g-PSPA nanoparticles have a promising future in ultrafiltration applications.

Polybrominated diphenyl ether has become a widespread environmental pollutant in aquatic environments. BDE-209, a prominent PBDEs found in the environment and wildlife, has been proven to cause oxidative stress, immune damage and endocrine system disorders in fish. However, the effects of BDE-209 on the intestinal health of fish remain unclear. This research aimed to determine the effects of BDE-209 on the growth performance, digestive enzymes activities and intestinal microbiota of common carp. After 60-day exposure, the growth performance of common carp were remarkably decreased (P 0.05). Overall, exposure to BDE-209 could alter the intestinal microbiota of common carp, which may affect their growth and threaten their health.

The present investigation intends to investigate the performance of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) included Reclaim Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) binder prepared with Novolac (phenol–formaldehyde solid resin)polymer. In order to assess the mechanical properties and performance of HMA with various RAP contents, several laboratory tests such as Marshall tests, indirect tensile strength testing, moisture damage evaluation, creep compliance test, and wheel track test was performed. The substitution was conducted in two stages: the first stage includes replacing the coarse aggregate with RAP up to 40percent with an increment of 10percent and the second stage includes the substitution of fine aggregate with the same percentages. The PMB binder was prepared by testing several mixes with various percentages of Novolac and its cross-linking agent (Hexamine). The findings of experimental work showed that the use of PMB binder significantly improves the mechanical properties and performance of HMA. Also, it shows that the substitution of coarse aggregate with RAP produces a substantial improvement in mechanical properties and performance of HMA compared with the substitution of fine aggregate or with control mix.

Effectively presenting epitopes on immunogens, in order to raise conformationally selective antibodies through active immunization, is a central problem in treating protein misfolding diseases, particularly neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease. We seek to selectively target conformations enriched in toxic, oligomeric propagating species while sparing the healthy forms of the protein that are often more abundant. To this end, we computationally modelled scaffolded epitopes in cyclic peptides by inserting/deleting a variable number of flanking glycines (“glycindels”), to best mimic a misfolding-specific conformation of an epitope of α-synuclein enriched in the oligomer ensemble, as characterized by a region most readily disordered and solvent-exposed in a stressed, partially denatured protofibril. We screen and rank the cyclic peptide scaffolds of α-synuclein in silico based on their ensemble overlap properties with the fibril, oligomer-model, and isolated monomer ensembles. We present experimental data of seeded aggregation that supports nucleation rates consistent with computationally predicted cyclic peptide conformational similarity. We also introduce a method for screening against structured off-pathway targets in the human proteome, by selecting scaffolds with minimal conformational similarity between their epitope and the same solvent-exposed primary sequence in structured human proteins. Different cyclic peptide scaffolds with variable numbers of glycines are predicted computationally to have markedly different conformational ensembles. Ensemble comparison and overlap was quantified by the Jensen-Shannon Divergence, and a new measure introduced here—the embedding depth, which determines the extent to which a given ensemble is subsumed by another ensemble, and which may be a more useful measure in developing immunogens that confer conformational-selectivity to an antibody.Graphical TOC Entry

The stock of shale gas in the Shahezi shale reservoir in the Changling fault depression, Songliao Basin, is believed to be worth exploring. In-depth study on the pore structure and fractal characterization of organic matter (OM) can help better understand the pore system of shale reservoir, which has implications for the exploration of lacustrine shale. To demonstrate the nanoscale pore structure and irregularity of the isolated OM, we collected a large number of samples and then conducted a series of laboratory experiments, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] adsorption experiments to determine the pore structure parameters and reveal their heterogeneity according to Frenkel-Halsey-Hill theory. As suggested by the experimental results, the pore size distribution curve of the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] exhibits similar pore peaks, whereas the trends of change in bulk shale and isolated OM samples are basically paralleled. The pore volume of the isolated OM ranges between 0.034 and [Formula: see text], which is approximately 0.90–3.06 times that of bulk shale samples. As for the fractal dimensions [Formula: see text] (2.594 on average) and [Formula: see text] (2.657 on average) of bulk shale, they are larger as compared with isolated OM, indicating that inorganic minerals can make a significant difference in the heterogeneity of shale pores. The fractal dimensions ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) of bulk shales indicate a close correlation with the parameters of pore structure, whereas there is no significant correlation observed between the dimensions of isolated OM and its parameters. In addition, thermal maturity and solid bitumen have only limited impact on the OM pore structure of isolated OM samples. Then, we conducted further research to reveal that the insoluble OM macerals derived from terrestrial higher plants can be used to explain the difference in pore structure and heterogeneity between isolated OM samples. Therefore, we arrived at the conclusion that the composition of macerals depends on the exact pore structure and fractal characteristics of isolated OM samples with similarity in thermal maturity.

The phenomenon of desertification has a negative impact on the national economy of any country and may usually be obtained for many reasons such as the removal of agricultural land, depletion of soil, overgrazing, methods of poor irrigation, high temperature, and the lack of rainfall. The following paper tackles solving the problem of the lack of rainfall through the use of chemical methods such as preparing sodium polyacrylate and improving its properties by means of adding bentonite and thus obtaining a new and improved water absorption compound. The study concludes that the suitable range of bentonite ratio that is between (0 - 20 wt %) ensures water absorption from 1340 gg - 1 to 1500gg – 1 and thus the researcher confirms that the cross-linked of the compound will not be changed and the absorption of water will be higher. The presence of bentonite with polymer at a perfect percentage contributes to the reorganization of the distribution of the granular size of the polymer sodium polyacrylate—a matter that is reflected on the growing of its ability to absorb water and thus becoming a suitable compound in the treatment of desertification.

Trypsin is an ancient protease best known as a digestive enzyme in animals, and traditionally believed to be absent in plants and protists. However, our recent studies have revealed its wide presence and important roles in marine phytoplankton. Here, to gain a better understanding on the importance of trypsin in phytoplankton, we further surveyed the distribution, diversity, evolution and potential ecological roles of trypsin in global ocean phytoplankton. Our analysis indicated that trypsin is widely distributed both taxonomically and geographically in marine phytoplankton. Furthermore, by systematic comparative analyses we found that algal trypsin could be classified into two subfamilies (trypsin I and trypsin II) and exhibited highly duplicated and diversified during evolution. We also observed markedly different domain sequences and organizations between and within the subfamilies, suggesting potential neofunctionalization. Diatoms contain both subfamilies of trypsin, with higher numbers of genes and more environment-responsive expression of trypsin than other lineages. The duplication and subsequent neofunctionalization of the trypsin family may be important in diatoms for adapting to dynamical environmental conditions, contributing to diatoms' dominance in the coastal oceans. This work advances our knowledge on the distribution and neofunctionalization of this ancient enzyme and creates a new window of research on phytoplankton biology.
