The article argues that International Relations, and especially those approaches that are informed by the epistemological and methodological premises of reflexivity, would benefit from a more diversified range of comparative methodologies other than those deriving from the work of J.S. Mill and more recent developments within the neopositivist canon. While discussions of methodology in International Relations have become open to a diversity of approaches in recent years, scholars have often been less prone to formulate explicit methodological guidance, especially in the form of practical guidance for alternative comparative research designs. Building on but further developing existing work on reflexivity and methodology, the article thus aims to open up methodological possibilities for reflexive IR by delineating three comparative strategies: defamiliarizing discursive comparison, contrapuntal comparison, and vernacular comparison. Each of the strategies is explained with reference to its theoretical and methodological background in existing scholarship, two key stages for its practical application, as well as examples. A 65-year old farmer and forestry worker in Quebec's Eastern Townships, John Buzzell, kept a diary from March 1916 until December 1918. Although in the third year he lived in the urban setting of Paris, Ontario, it is a typical example of a rural work diary, recording the weather, listing details of his workday, and describing family's and neighbours' activities and health. Such journals furnish social historians with rich detail about rural life but little about the emotions and sensibilities of their authors. This research note proposes and uses two systematic practices, or tools, for addressing the well-known analytic difficulty of recognizing the non-dit and extracting emotion from rural work diaries. Focusing on literary and physical conventions of composition and structured comparison, these two practices can unpack emotions such as sorrow, pride, pleasure, nostalgia, anxiety, and loneliness and help lift the veil of discretion about public and family affairs. Many other kinds of journals or memoirs similarly contain little explicit expression of emotion, and the two tools described in this research note may open more sources and archives, as well as lowering the risk of selecting on the dependent variable, choosing for the study of emotions only diaries that include their unmediated expression. • Two comparable high-temperature heat pumps at different scales are investigated. • Both heat pumps show similar COP trend lines depending on the temperature lift. • Differences in heat losses and heat transfer are related to volume-to-surface ratios. • Experimental data for a water-cooled compressor show promising results. • Analysis of over 200 data points shows the possibility of upscaling laboratory results. High-temperature heat pumps (HTHP) are crucial for decarbonizing district heating and industry. Hence, a reliable performance estimation considering effects of scaling is of interest for cost-efficient system integration. This study compares two laboratory HTHPs with the same refrigerant R1233zd(E). These systems have a similar plant design but a capacity scale factor of 3.2. The aim is to evaluate scale effects and make general valid statements about the challenges of upscaling laboratory test results. The analyses show that it is essential to distinguish between design effects like temperature differences at the pinch point or different heat exchanger surfaces and scale effects like relative heat losses and efficiencies of components and the system. At the component level, large surface reserves in the heat exchangers lead to 3–5 K smaller approach temperature differences in the lower capacity HTHP. At the system level, the relative heat losses are about 15 % higher than in the system with a larger capacity. The coefficient of performance of both HTHPs shows a similar trend as a function of the temperature lift from the heat source to the sink. The current work offers a detailed comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of microgrids concerning the developments of photovoltaic (PV) production installed near the shore and those installed offshore. As demand for renewable energy increases, integrating offshore and marine photovoltaic systems offers a promising approach to increase energy production while minimizing land use. This study explores the inherent advantages of offshore photovoltaic systems, including higher energy production due to the cooling effect of water, reduced reliance on land, and the ability to tap into sustained marine solar resources. On the other hand, this paper also addresses challenges associated with these systems, such as: B. Increased installation complexity, vulnerability to harsh ocean conditions, and potential impacts on marine ecosystems. The results in this paper show good performance for both offshore and floating PV systems, except that the offshore PV system excels over the other system by 3.13% in energy production. Moreover, the difference in the annual efficiency of the two PV systems reached 0.55%. These values are considered low because both systems are installed in water, given that both systems benefit from lower temperature and solar irradiation values. Nevertheless, these two systems equally present their own unique challenges including, but not limited to, operational and maintenance cost increase, effect on marine ecology and the technical hindrances on installation and grid interconnectivity. The aim of this review is to disentangle the achievements made regarding the current state of the art in floating photovoltaic technologies. When dealing with performance metrics, two solutions are examined in order to demonstrate the feasibility of providing the energy needs in an ecological way.

The aims of the current study were twofold: (1) to identify factors that distinguish men who commit sadistic sexual aggression from those who do not; and (2) to investigate the developmental trajectories leading to sexual sadism. The study sample was composed of 206 men who had committed sexual aggression against women (69 men who had committed sadistic sexual aggression; 137 men who had committed nonsadistic sexual aggression), all of whom were incarcerated in Quebec (Canada). The Severe Sexual Sadism Scale (SESAS), an empirically validated instrument, was used to characterize the participants. Bivariate (χ2) analyses were performed. Our results revealed that men who had committed sadistic sexual aggression against women differed from others in several respects, notably developmental (e.g., emotional and physical abuse), psychological (e.g., avoidant and narcissistic personality profiles), sexological (e.g., deviant sexual fantasies), and criminological (e.g., a structured modus operandi, use of a weapon, anal penetration). Structural equation modeling analysis identified a developmental trajectory leading to the commission of sadistic sexual aggression. Le présent article propose une plongée dans l’univers de la phraséologie, vers une vision contrastive qui tente de faire sortir la réflexion dans ce domaine des sentiers battus et de permettre l’émergence de nouveaux moyens dans l’analyse des faits phraséologiques impliquant différentes dimensions : lexicale, syntaxique, morphosyntaxique, sémantique, etc. Cette réflexion linguistique comparative bilingue français-arabe porte sur des éléments phraséologiques, à savoir les locutions verbales. Notre but est de dégager les spécificités et caractéristiques linguistiques de ces locutions en arabe pour mettre en évidence certains aspects contrastifs avec le français, sachant que les deux langues – apparemment aussi éloignées l’une de l’autre – renferment bien des similitudes.

Dans cet article, nous comparons les différences lexicales de quatre variétés Teke (Ɛtyɛɛ, ilaalɛ, Ityɔɔ et Iyaa), parlées dans les départements de la Bouenza et de la Lékoumou. L’objectif est de constituer ces parlers en groupes afin de déterminer les degrés de différences lexicales qu’il y a entre ces groupes. Au total, cinq types de comparaisons sont effectués pour aboutir à la répartition des parlers en groupes. La constitution des groupes, dans les quatre premières comparaisons, est organisée de manière suivante : trois parlers dans le G1 et un parler dans le G2. Dans la cinquième comparaison, les deux groupes possèdent chacun deux parlers (G1 = Ɛtyɛɛ et Ityɔɔ, et G2 = Ilaalɛ et Iyaa). C’est dans cette dernière où l’on remarque un taux de différences lexicales plus élevé par rapport aux quatre premières. L’écart lexical entre ces deux groupes est de 9,23%, un pourcentage qui marque la distance lexicale entre le groupe Ɛtyɛɛ - Ityɔɔ, et le groupe Ilaalɛ et Iyaa.

Through a comparison between the two translations 0/Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), Françoise Brodsky's Une femme noire (Le Castor astral, 1993) and Sika Fakambi's Mais leurs yeux dardaient sur Dieu (Zulma, 2018), this article aims at assessing how each translator renders the black vernacular of the novel, as well as the opposition between Standard English and the "dialect" which turns the narration into a double-voiced text. An anthropologist and a folklorist, Hurston transposes in her novel the African American Vernacular English (AAVE) which she analyses as a linguist in "Characteristics of Negro Expression" (1934). If according to Brodsky, the translator must "invent" a language, Fakambi mixes several varieties of languages, keeping at times the original language, to render the text's aurality/orality, so as to "estrange the French language". Une synthèse panoramique des catégories de plateformes didactiques a été dressée afin de comprendre les enjeux de cette nouvelle méthode d’enseignement à distance. L’impersonnel est peut-être l’un des phénomènes les plus intéressants et les plus complexes de la théorie syntaxique. Dans le présent article, notre but est de délimiter la spécificité de l’impersonnel, de circonscrire sa forme et ses éventuelles variations, et de relever les points convergents et divergents de cette structure asubjectale dans deux langues, le français et l’arabe, élargissant ainsi notre perspective vers une problématique d’ordre plus général dans la description des langues, et qui se poserait plus précisément à l’arabe, langue réputée non munie de cette forme. Nous étaierons une réflexion à la fois intralinguistique et interlinguistique qui nous permettrait de formuler quelques hypothèses, d'entrevoir les différences et les éventuelles ressemblances entre les deux langues.

Due to regional development impacts, existing traffic analysis zones may be rezoned. Apportioning data to new traffic analysis zones is essential to ensure data analysis consistency and comparability. The traditional method uses area to apportion data. This study introduces six methods in apportioning trip data, including the traditional method (M1); the residential land use counted method (M2); the population counted at the dissemination area (DA) level method (M3); the integrated method using both residential land use and the population in DAs (M4); the population counted at the dissemination block (DB) level method (M5); and the integrated method using both residential land use and the population in DBs (M6). These methods are demonstrated in the case of Toronto, Canada using trip data from 2001 and 2016. Results from the six methods are compared and analyzed using mapping, Getis‐Ord Gi* hot‐spot analysis, and the Wilcoxon signed‐rank test. Our findings show that the traditional method and the population counted in DAs method are significantly different (p < 0.05) from the residential land use counted method and the integrated method using both residential land use and the population in DAs and the integrated method using both residential land use and the population in DBs. These results provide references for selecting appropriate apportionment methods, which is the basis for transportation planning and policymaking. Key Messages: Six apportionment methods for assigning trip data to rezoned traffic analysis zones were examined using the trip data of Toronto from 2001 and 2016.The apportionment results from the six methods were compared using hot‐spot analysis and the Wilcoxon signed‐rank test.The results of comparisons provide references for the choices of methods in apportioning trip data. A comparison between the (former) Institutes for Information Science at the Universities of Düsseldorf and Graz, based on research performance for a period of ten years shows how much the evaluators can influence the results. When choosing "suitable" indicators, it is possible – depending on the desired result – to rank the favored institute first. Introduction : La pandémie de COVID-19 en cours n'a pas épargné le Burkina Faso qui a enregistré ses premiers cas depuis le 09 mars 2020. Objectifs : Comparer les manifestations cliniques observées chez les patients positifs au COVID-19 versus patients négatifs à la COVID-19. Méthodes : Il s'agit d'une étude transversale analytique qui s'est déroulée du 05 avril 2020 au 04 mai 2020. Étaient inclus tous les patients présentant des signes évocateurs de COVID-19 reçus dans la zone d'accueil et de tri des patients suspects du CHU Yalgado Ouédraogo. Les définitions des cas sont celles de l'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS). La confirmation du diagnostic a été faite au laboratoire grâce à la RT-PCR. Résultats : En un mois d'activité au niveau de la zone de tri du CHU Yalgado Ouédraogo, 151 cas suspects de COVID-19 ont été reçus. Le test de la COVID-19 a été positif chez 14 cas, soit un taux de positivité de 9%. La majorité des patients (13/14) soit 93% souffrant de COVID-19 provenaient de la ville de Ouagadougou contre (93/137) soit 68% des patients négatifs au COVID-19 (p=0,003). Sur le plan clinique, une fièvre avec une température supérieure à 38°C était retrouvée chez (4 /14)28,5% des patients COVID+ contre (47/76)62% des patients COVID- (p=0,013) ; une détresse respiratoire était présente chez (4/14) 28% des patients COVID+ contre (11/122) 9% des patients COVID- (p=0,02) ; quatorze pourcent (2/14) des patients COVID+ avaient des algies diffuses contre 2% (3/128) des patients COVID- (p=0,04) ; une Spo2 < 95% était retrouvée chez 21% (3/14) des patients COVID+ contre 72% (36/50) chez les patients COVID- (p=0,0005). Conclusion : La COVID-19 devrait être évoquée chez tout patient qui présente des algies diffuses, une détresse respiratoire avec ou sans fièvre.

Taking as a starting point the Rainer Warning’s study on Flaubert, this article analyses the specific procedures that allow for the ironic coexistence of romantic discourse and realistic discourse in Madame Bovary. Here we focus on a particularly complex fragment of the novel –its intricacy due to the wealth of narrative voices and stylistic resources– to describe, on the one hand, the hiatuses that in the text mark an interruption of romantic discourse and the shift to realistic discourse, and, on the other, the dilogical confluence of voices where both discourses overlap. However, we conclude that such dichotomies can only exist on a theoretical frame. All mechanisms induce the reader to focus on language, produc-ing a distancing effect and “levelling” the text. Sur la base de l’étude de Rainer Warning sur Flaubert, cet article analyse les pro-cédés qui permettent la coexistence ironique du discours réaliste et du discours romantique dans Madame Bovary. En nous appuyant sur un fragment du roman particulièrement complexe par sa richesse vocale et stylistique, nous examinons deux types de dichotomies: les hiatus du texte qui signalent l’interruption du discours romantique et l’introduction du discours réaliste, d’une part; d’autre part, la confluence dilogique de voix qui comporte une superposition des deux discours. Nous concluons cependant que cette double dichotomie ne peut exister que sur un plan théorique. Dans la mesure où tous les mécanismes étudiés focalisent l’attention du lecteur sur le langage, ils provoquent un effet de distanciation et contribuent au « nivellement » du texte.

The aim of the paper is to compare the safety awareness and preparation of children and adolescents for an extraordinary event, with an emphasis on fire protection. The Fire Prevention Programme in Poland is a unique preventive and educational initiative developed by a team of fire and rescue experts in Poznan. These experts have worked with colleagues in the UK for many years and have benefited from their experience with similar programmes that have produced measurable results in improving the safety of local communities. The priority of the pre-school fire prevention programme in Hungary is to contribute to the active learning of the surrounding world of children, to the formation of safe lifestyles. In the Czech Republic, the preventive programme "Education of children in the field of fire protection and protection of the population" is implemented to a good level. There is absolute inadequacy and out-dated study materials in the area in the Slovak Republic. There is no separate subject dealing with emergencies. This article offers a comparative study of everyday sexual ethics among Dutch Sunni Muslim and evangelical Christian young adults, both those born into religious families and those converted later in life. In European public debates, the sexual values of observant Christians and – especially – observant Muslims, are commonly understood to deviate from progressive norms. Particularly for Muslims, this has become a ground for questioning their belonging to the moral nation. Our ethnographic analysis complicates these conventional representations, which are partly reflected in quantitative survey research. We argue that the sexual ethics of the young Muslims and Christians we studied are multi-layered, situational, and dialogical. Discussing the convergences and divergences between these groups, we point to a paradox: while Muslims tend to be set apart as sexually 'other', the young Christians we worked with – and to a lesser extent the converted Muslims – put strikingly more effort into distinguishing themselves from, and criticising, dominant sexual norms.
