Ski tourism's popularity is driving a rise in the number of ski resorts. This study aims to present the impact of ski infrastructure on soil erosion processes in the example from a small catchment in the Gubałowskie Foothills in southern Poland, where landscape changes before (since 1879) and after the construction of the ski station (2007) are presented. The analyses of changes in flow accumulation, slope morphometry, and drainage ditches were conducted in the test area. Quantitative analyses were performed using repeated DEMs derived from aerial LiDAR survey and detailed geodetic measurements, complemented by geomorphological mapping done in the field. The study has revealed that the ski infrastructure has not only directly transformed the hillslope by flattening and constructing escarpments (up to 3 m high) but has also created alternating patterns of erosion and accumulation. In the test area, the drainage ditch was poorly designed. It was filled with materials (0.1–0.5 m), and two new outlets formed. The escarpment of the analyzed ski run has been diminished by 0.5 m. An alluvial fan (0.1–0.22 m thick) has developed on the flattened surface below the escarpment with drainage ditch outlets. This fan is eroded by subsurface flow that creates a piping system. The gully below the alluvial fan has retreated upslope, accelerated by subsurface erosion. This study enables the presentation of hillslope adjustments and processes in response to the new conditions caused by ski infrastructure. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) errors tend to be spatially correlated, inevitably affecting DEM-based topographic change detection. Traditional topographic change detection methods often ignore the spatial distribution of the DEM error. This paper aims to develop a workflow that considers the spatial autocorrelation of the error in topographic change detection. Firstly, the DEM of Difference (DoD) is obtained from two-period DEMs, and the Monte Carlo method is employed to evaluate the Spatially Distributed Errors (SDE) in DEMs. Secondly, DoD errors are calculated by propagation based on spatially distributed DEM errors. At the same time, its spatial distribution is quantified using the semi-variance function. Finally, topographic changes (erosion, deposition, and net changes) are calculated based on the spatial distribution analysis and significance detection. The results in two small catchments indicate that DEM errors are spatially correlated, increasing the volume calculation errors. However, using Standard Deviation of Errors (SDE) instead of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) can effectively reduce the sensitivity of the detection results in the significance threshold. When the significance threshold increases from 68% to 95%, the observations loss using the spatially distributed error is 4.67% −6.92% lower than that using the RMSE. The level of detection has little impact on the net topographic change and significantly influences gross erosion and deposition. In particular, the use of level of detection can effectively reduce the misclassification of erosion or deposition in stable topography areas. The proposed method can be effectively utilized in various applications like surface deformation monitoring, erosion monitoring, and sediment transport assessment.

Topographic change detection is increasingly being used to identify and monitor landslides and other geohazards in support of risk-informed decision-making. Expanding change detection from site specific to regional scales enables increasingly proactive asset management and contributes to improving the resilience of infrastructure to extreme events. It is widely known that change detection precision can be improved by applying three-dimensional algorithms, such as iterative closest point (ICP) and M3C2, directly to raw point clouds. However, this also increases the computational requirements compared to alternatives such as digital elevation model differencing. This study presents a novel graphics processing unit (GPU)-based implementation of the ICP-M3C2 workflow to address this limitation. In the proposed algorithm, point cloud data segments are automatically queued and served to the working GPU, which efficiently performs point cloud processing operations, while the central processing unit (CPU) performs data management operations in parallel. The developed method is estimated to be up to 54 times faster than CPU-based versions of the same algorithm. In this study, we present how the workflow has been applied to six regional-scale landslide identification and monitoring case studies in which landslides are causing the disruption of pipelines, highways, and rail corridors. Although sandy islands in arid environments are vital protection sites for endemic species, they face constant natural and anthropogenic hazards, such as storm surge impacts and the occasional presence of off-road vehicles. Monitoring the sedimentary dune-beach displacement and balance is essential because sediment transportation usually does not depend on external sources, such as rivers. The latest generation of geomatic applications may be relevant to understanding coastal vulnerability due to their ability to acquire and process spatial data at unprecedented scales. The objective of this study was to analyze the sedimentary dynamics of a distinctive dune corridor on Altamura Island in the Gulf of California, Mexico. We compared three ultra-high spatial resolution digital surface models (DSMs) with geomorphic change detection (DoD), covering the 1150 m coastal stretch. We used light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data and analyzed changes in the coastline with the semi-automatic CoastSat tool. Although the orthomosaics and the DSM collected in April, June, and October 2021 show different conditions in sediment distribution along the beach-dune interface, depending on the direction and intensity of the wind, the two DoDs showed a constant sediment distribution balance of ~13 M m3 between April and June and June and October. LiDAR data along the 40-km length of the sandy island indicate that the entire island could present a similar sedimentation pattern between the dune and beach interface. The CoastSat data indicate a constant accretion of 125 m in the beach-ocean interface between 2015 and 2022. This study demonstrates that the sediment balance between the dune and the beach on arid sandy islands is vital for conserving their shoreline and all associated coastal ecosystems.

Since the end of the Little Ice Age (LIA, ~1830), the accelerated glaciers' shrinkage along mid-latitude high mountain areas promoted a quick readjustment of geomorphological processes with the onset of the paraglacial dynamic, making proglacial areas among the most sensitive Earth's landscapes to ongoing climate change. A potentially useful remote-sensing method for investigating such dynamic areas is the DEM (Digital Elevation Model) of Difference (DoD) technique, which quantifies volumetric changes in a territory between successive topographic surveys. After a detailed geomorphological analysis and comparison with historical maps of the Martello Valley (central Italian Alps), we applied the DoD for reconstructing post-LIA deglaciation dynamics and reported on the surface effects of freshly-onset paraglacial processes. The head of the valley is still glacierized, with three main ice bodies resulting from the huge reduction of a single glacier present at the apogee of the LIA. Aftermath: the glaciers lose 60% of their initial surface area, largely modifying local landforms and expanding the surface of the proglacial areas. The DoD analysis of the 2006–2015 timeframe (based on registered DEM derived from LiDAR—Light Detection and Ranging—data) highlights deep surface elevation changes ranging from +38 ± 4.01 m along the foot of rock walls, where gravitative processes increased their intensity, to −47 ± 4.01 m where the melting of buried ice caused collapses of the proglacial surface. This approach permits estimating the volume of sediments mobilized and reworked by paraglacial processes. Here, in less than 10 years, −23,675 ± 1165 m3 of sediment were removed along the proglacial area and transported down valley, highlighting the dynamicity of proglacial areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Open-Source Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is fundamental data of the geoscientific community. However, the variation of its accuracy with land cover type and topography has not been thoroughly studied. This study evaluates the accuracy of five globally covered and open-accessed DEM products (TanDEM-X90 m, SRTEM, NASADEM, ASTER GDEM, and AW3D30) in the mountain area using ICESat/GLAS data as the GCPs. The robust evaluation indicators were utilized to compare the five DEMs' accuracy and explore the relationship between these errors and slope, aspect, landcover types, and vegetation coverage, thereby revealing the consistency differences in DEM quality under different geographical feature conditions. The Taguchi method is introduced to quantify the impact of these surface characteristics on DEM errors. The results show that the slope is the main factor affecting the accuracy of DEM products, accounting for about 90%, 81%, 85%, 83%, and 65% for TanDEM-X90, SRTM, NASADEM, ASTER GDEM, and AW3D30, respectively. TanDEM-X90 has the highest accuracy in very flat areas (slope < 2°), NASADEM and SRTM have the greatest accuracy in flat areas (2 ≤ slope < 5°), while AW3D30 accuracy is the best in other cases and shows the best consistency on slopes. This study makes a new attempt to quantify the factors affecting the accuracy of DEM, and the results can guide the selection of open-source DEMs in related geoscience research. South Manitou Island, part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in northern Lake Michigan, is a post-glacial lacustrine landscape with substantial geomorphic changes including landslides, shoreline and bluff retreat, and sand dune movement. These changes involve interrelated processes, and are influenced to different extents by lake level, climate change, and land use patterns, among other factors. The utility of DEM of Difference (DoD) and other terrain analyses were investigated as a means of understanding interrelated geomorphologic changes and processes across multiple decades and at multiple scales. A 1m DEM was developed from 1955 historical aerial imagery using Structure from Motion Multi-View Stereo (SfM-MVS) and compared to a 2016 lidar-based DEM to quantify change. Landslides, shoreline erosion, bluff retreat, and sand dune movement were investigated throughout South Manitou Island. While the DoD indicates net loss or gain, interpretation of change must take into consideration the SfM-MVS source of the historical DEM. In the case of landslides, where additional understanding may be gleaned through review of the timing of lake high- and lowstands together with DoD values. Landscape-scale findings quantified cumulative feedbacks between interrelated processes. Multi-temporal repeat monitoring of flood-vulnerable rivers is crucial due to rapid alteration of morphological properties of in-channel landforms. Besides, the characteristics of the river crossing bridges may deteriorate due to flood induced scouring around bridge piles or due to flood loads. Thus, in this study high-resolution topography of the study region was acquired during two consecutive years by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based surveys using Structure-from-Motion (SfM) processing. Following the extraction of digital elevation models (DEM), repeat data that were obtained at each UAV survey were compared using Geomorphic Change Detection (GCD) to calculate volumes of deposition and erosion via DEM of difference (DoD) algorithm. Thus, detailed high-resolution maps of the river channels can be rapidly and efficiently generated by low cost UAV based measurement methods in order for continuous tracking of stream channel morphology for the rivers sensitive to floods.

Global warming significantly impacts sediment dynamics in glaciated catchments, affecting water resource operations, water quality, recreational activities, and ecological systems. The propagation of climate-change-induced geomorphic changes and the catchment's sediment yield are moderated by sediment connectivity, defined as the degree to which a geomorphic system facilitates sediment transfer. Quantifying functional sediment connectivity at the catchment scale remains a challenge. To address this, we propose a novel approach combining graph theory with the morphological method. This approach is exemplified through a detailed case study of a 2022 thunderstorm event in the Grastal valley, Tyrol, Austria. First, a graph of potential sediment cascades is constructed using a geomorphological map, a digital elevation model and a flow routing algorithm. A short-term Digital Elevation Model of Difference (DoD) from consecutive ALS surveys is then used to infer sediment fluxes and calculate the Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR) for each landform. The primary sediment mobilising processes were debris flows and fluvial erosion, with a significant proportion of debris flow material being deposited on slopes, not reaching the fluvial corridor. Strong fluvial erosion was observed in the proglacial area, but the propagation of these geomorphic changes is halted by an alluvial fan and a lake. Most landforms can be clearly categorised as connecting or disconnecting features based on their SDR. In total, a maximum of 12 % of mobilised sediments exited the catchment. Our findings demonstrate that (i) short-term, catchment-wide DoDs are valuable for assessing functional connectivity at an event temporal scale, (ii) using landforms as fundamental spatial units allows for the identification and in-depth analysis of critical sediment sinks and sources, and (iii) graph analysis facilitates the catchment-wide calculation of sediment delivery ratios between meaningful fundamental units and the delineation of significant sediment cascades. • The morphological method was used to infer sediment fluxes of a 2022 debris flow event • Functional connectivity was assessed at catchment scale using graph theory with landforms as fundamental units • Most landforms could be clearly classified as connecting or disconnecting features • The fluvial system had high sediment delivery ratios, indicating supply limitation • Important disconnecting features were talus slopes, an alluvial fan and a lake at the margin of the proglacial area [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

However, unlike airborne LiDAR data, which is usually provided as classified and contains a class of ground points, raw TLS data include all of the points of the scanned space within the specified scanner range. In effect, utilizing the latter data to estimate the volume of the resource by the differential analysis of digital elevation models (DEMs) requires the data to be specially prepared, i.e., separating from the point cloud only the data that represent the relevant class. In the case of natural resources, e.g., mineral resources, the class is represented by ground points. This paper presents the results that were obtained by differential analysis of high resolution DEMs (DEM of difference (DoD) method) using TLS data that were processed both manually (operator noise removal) and with the use of the automatic Cloth Simulation Filter (CSF) algorithm. Three different time pairs of DoD data were analyzed for a potential gravel-cobble deposit area of 45,444 m2, which was located at the bottom of the mouth section of the Scott River in south-east Svalbard. It was found that the applied method of ground point classification had very little influence on the errors in the range of estimating volumetric parameters of the mineral resources and measurement uncertainty. Moreover, it was shown that the point cloud density had an influence on the CSF filtering efficiency and spatial distribution of errors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hillslope rill/interrill erosion has been investigated from the perspective of runoff transport of sediment. Recent advances in terrestrial laser scanning can provide high-resolution elevation data up to centimeter levels, and temporal digital elevation models (DEMs) enabled the detection and quantification of sediment redistribution. Erosion and deposition are spatially heterogeneous across hillslopes, and the choice of resolution is critical when using a DEM to study the spatial pattern of the processes. This study investigates the influence of grid size on the sediment change calculation and rill network delineation based on two surveys using a terrestrial laser scanner on a hillslope with well-developed rills in 2014 and 2015. Temporal DEMs were used to quantify elevation changes and used to delineate rill networks. We produced DEM pairs of incremental grid sizes (1-cm, 2-cm, 5-cm, 8-cm, 10-cm, 15-cm, 20-cm, and 30-cm) for DEM difference and rill network delineation. We used the 1-cm DEM as the reference to compare the results produced from other DEMs. Our results suggest that erosion mainly occurs on the rill sidewalls, and deposition on the rill floors, with patches of erosion/deposition within the interrill areas. Both the area and volume of detectable change decrease as the grid size increases, while the area and volume of erosion are less sensitive compared to those of deposition. The total length and number of rills decrease with the increased grid size, whereas the average length of rills increases. The mean offset between delineated rill network and the reference increases with larger grid sizes. In contrast to the erosion and deposition detected within rills, minor changes are detected on the interrill areas, indicating that either no topographic changes occurred or the changes were too small to be detected on the interill areas by our finest 1-cm DEMs. We recommend to use the finest possible grid size that can be achieved for future studies.

However, LiDAR-derived DEMs are mostly available only as post-event surveys. The technique is relatively recent, and local or national authorities only started widespread surveys in the last decade. Therefore, it is of a certain interest to analyse the effectiveness of DEMs derived from technical cartography to produce reliable volumetric estimates related to large landslides. This study evaluates the use of a multi-source DEM of Difference (DoD) analysis for the investigation of a large landslide –Le Laste–, which occurred on November 12, 2014 on Mount Antelao (eastern Italian Alps). The landslide initiated as a 365,000 m3 rockslide close to the summit of the mountain and transformed into a debris avalanche during its runout. The comparison of pre- and post-event DEMs allowed for the identification and quantification of erosion and deposition areas, and for the estimation of landslide volume. A sound back-analysis of the landslide with the 3D numerical model DAN3D was based on this comparison and on seismic records of the event. These seismic records proved to be remarkably useful, as they allowed for the calibration of the simulated landslide velocity. This ensured the reliability of the model notwithstanding the topographic datasets, intrinsic uncertainties. We found that using a pre-event DEM derived from technical cartography tends to slightly overestimate the volume with respect to the use of the more accurate LiDAR-derived DEM. In recent years, the landslide risk around Mt. Antelao has been increasing alongside the ever-growing population and human activities in the area. Sediment accumulations produced by the Le Laste landslide significantly amplified the debris flow hazard by providing new sediment sources. Therefore, it is crucial to delineate the distribution of this material to enable an adequate debris flow hazard assessment. The material properties derived from the back-analysis of the Le Laste landslide can be used to simulate the runout of possible future events, and to generate reliable hazard zone maps, which are necessary for effective risk mitigation.

In the Johnsbach Valley (Austria), a medium size non-glaciated torrent catchment, enormous amounts of sediment have been made available due to the brittle dolomite bedrock. This occurs mainly in the Zwischenmäuerstrecke (ZMS) (English translation: “reach between the walls”) and presents a major challenge to local river management. Within a renaturation project, which followed several decades of disturbance (flood protection and gravel mining) in the ZMS, it is of particular importance to understand where the sediments come from and the transport pathways through the system to prepare future forecasts. In the present study, we investigate the recent sediment cascade in a comprehensive analysis of the ZMS that was achieved by means of airborne laser scanning campaigns in 2010 and 2015. The current bedload yield at the outlet was measured using an integrative bedload monitoring system. Historical data from 1954 was used to illustrate the effects of the mining period on the former sediment routing. Finally, we evaluated the expected sediment transport rates in the near future. The results show that from the hillslopes sediments are mainly transported via the active side trenches to the main channel (~7000 m 3  yr −1 ). The sediment transport in the Johnsbach River consists mainly in relocating the periodically occurring sediment entries of the side trenches. The bedload transport rates at the outlet sum up to annual bedload yields of 2000 m 3  yr −1 to almost 12,000 m 3  yr −1 during the observation period. Especially those areas inside the side trenches that were heavily affected by gravel mining (excavated amount of sediment during the mining period: ~25,000 m 3  yr −1 ) are now accumulating sediment since the end of this period (~8000 m 3  yr −1 ). Future scenarios will depend heavily on the progress in the mining affected side channels. The impacts of this period are continuously being reworked and a natural sediment flow will adjust in the near future. The sediment input into the Johnsbach River will rise significantly and could lead to a doubling in the annual sediment yield at the outlet compared to now. In particular, the reaches along the Johnsbach River following the confluences with the mining affected side trenches are already showing morphological changes due to the recently imported sediments. In the last decade increasing popularity of winter tourism in mountain areas in Poland influenced development of ski infrastructure. This type of human activity may induce changes in mountain relief. The purpose of the study was to quantify ongoing change patterns via: (i) a determination of spatial and quantitative changes in catchment covered by new ski runs, (ii) a determination of the effect of new ski runs on the rejuvenation of relief in valleys adjacent to ski runs, (iii) an identification of changes in the surface runoff pattern before and after the construction of ski runs. The research was carried out in the Remiaszów catchment on two ski runs (southern Poland). Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data from 2013 and 2016 were also used in the study along with Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) data from 2015. LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) point clouds were interpolated to create multi-temporal DEMs and then these DEMs were used to derive DoDs. These were used to identify erosion and accumulation zones. The Convergence Index (CI) was used to determine the direction of surface runoff. The largest changes in relief were observed in areas with ski runs, with ski run E lowering an average of 0.07 m (±0.03 m), and ski run N an average of 0.12 m (±0.03 m). The entire area lowered about 0.02 m. The construction of new ski runs resulted in a rejuvenation of denudation valleys located in the vicinity of existing ski runs. Valley incisions reaching 1.5 m (±0.15 m) were observed. Both the convergence and divergence zones for surface runoff were identified, which made it possible to show changes in the geometry of flow direction. The identification of these sites may help forecast erosion and deposition zones. In general, this may make it easier to identify areas substantially susceptible to relief change. A first assessment of the TanDEM-X DEMs over Brazilian territory is presented through a comparison with SRTM, ASTER GDEM and ALOS AW3D30 DEMs in seven study areas with distinct geomorphological contexts, vegetation coverage, and land use. Visual analysis and elevation histograms point to a finer effective spatial (i.e., horizontal) resolution of TanDEM-X compared to SRTM and ASTER GDEM. In areas of open vegetation, TanDEM-X lower elevations indicate a deeper penetration of the radar signal. DEMs of differences (DoDs) allowed the identification of issues inherent to the production methods of the analyzed DEMs, such as mast oscillations in SRTM data and mismatch between adjacent scenes in ASTER GDEM and ALOS AW3D30. A systematic difference in elevations between TanDEM-X 12 m, TanDEM-X 30 m, and SRTM was observed in the steep slopes of the coastal ranges, related to the moving-window process used to resample the 12 m data to a 30 m pixel size. It is strongly recommended to produce a DoD with SRTM before using ASTER GDEM or ALOS AW3D30 in any analysis, to evaluate if the area of interest is affected by these problems. The DoDs also highlighted changes in land use in the time span between the acquisition of SRTM (2000) and TanDEM-X (2013) data, whether by natural causes or by human interference in the environment. The results show a high level of detail and consistency for TanDEM-X data, indicate that the effective horizontal resolution of SRTM is coarser than the nominal 30 m, and highlight the errors in ASTER GDEM and ALOS AW3D30 due to mismatch between adjacent scenes in the photogrammetric process. Mining typically involves extensive areas where environmental monitoring is spatially sporadic. New remote sensing techniques and platforms such as Structure from Motion (SfM) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may offer one solution for more comprehensive and spatially continuous measurements. We conducted UAV campaigns in three consecutive summers (2015-2017) at a sub-Arctic mining site where production was temporarily suspended. The aim was to monitor a 0.5 km2 tailings impoundment and measure potential subsidence of tailings. SfM photogrammetry was used to produce yearly topographical models of the tailings surface, which allowed the amount of surface displacement between years to be tracked. Ground checkpoints surveyed in stable areas of the impoundment were utilized in assessing the vertical accuracy of the models. Observed surface displacements were linked to a combination of erosion, tailings settlement, and possible compaction of the peat layer underlying the tailings. The accuracy obtained indicated that UAV-assisted monitoring of tailings impoundments is sufficiently accurate for supporting impoundment management operations and for tracking surface displacements in the decimeter range. Seafloors of unconsolidated sediment are highly dynamic features; eroding or accumulating under the action of tides, waves and currents. Assessing which areas of the seafloor experienced change and measuring the corresponding volumes involved provide insights into these important active sedimentation processes. Computing the difference between Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) obtained from repeat Multibeam Echosounders (MBES) surveys has become a common technique to identify these areas, but the uncertainty in these datasets considerably affects the estimation of the volumes displaced. The two main techniques used to take into account uncertainty in volume estimations are the limitation of calculations to areas experiencing a change in depth beyond a chosen threshold, and the computation of volumetric confidence intervals. However, these techniques are still in their infancy and, as a result, are often crude, seldom used or poorly understood. In this article, we explored a number of possible methodological advances to address this issue, including: (1) using the uncertainty information provided by the MBES data processing algorithm CUBE, (2) adapting fluvial geomorphology techniques for volume calculations using spatially variable thresholds and (3) volumetric histograms. The nearshore seabed off Warrnambool harbour – located in the highly energetic southwest Victorian coast, Australia – was used as a test site. Four consecutive MBES surveys were carried out over a four-months period. The difference between consecutive DEMs revealed an area near the beach experiencing large sediment transfers – mostly erosion – and an area of reef experiencing increasing deposition from the advance of a nearby sediment sheet. The volumes of sediment displaced in these two areas were calculated using the techniques described above, both traditionally and using the suggested improvements. We compared the results and discussed the applicability of the new methodological improvements. We found that the spatially variable uncertainty derived from the CUBE algorithm provided the best results (i.e. smaller confidence intervals), but that similar results can be obtained using as a fixed uncertainty value derived from a reference area under a number of operational conditions. ABSTRACT Earthflow-type landslides are persistent natural hazards having deep socio-economic and environmental consequences. They have significantly contributed to the geomorphic evolution of mountainous slopes in Europe since the Late Glacial. An understanding of their complex kinematics is crucial to better constrain the processes governing their occurrence and mobility. In this work we explored the possibility to quantify displacement vectors on a spatially distributed basis and to quantify volumetric transfer at the slope scale with regard to a large flow-type landslide located in the northern Apennines of Italy. For this purpose we applied digital image correlation (DIC) and digital elevation model differencing (DEMoD) techniques to multi-temporal airborne LiDAR surveys of 2006, 2007 and 2009. The DIC was applied to greyscale slope gradient maps retrieved after precise co-registration of LiDAR surveys. Thereby, movement patterns over various sectors of the landslide were reconstructed and quantified, most notably up to 20 m in the head zone, up to 51 m in the lower main track, and up to about 27 m at the landslide toe. The DEMoD analysis revealed significant mass transfer from the source to the tracks and toe zone, with the upper flow tracks acting as temporal storage of large amounts of material. The mass balance indicated that significant amounts of advancing landslide debris were eroded by a local stream. An integrated analysis of DEMoD and DIC results allowed for a discussion of governing processes, such as the transition from slide to flow, the influence of underlying topography on earthflow mobility, and the role of undrained loading as a mechanism of toe zone reactivation. In conclusion, the successful application of DIC and DEMoD to the case study underlines the added value of high-resolution DEMs in the analysis of earthflow kinematics toward a better understanding of their role in the geomorphic evolution of slopes. Sheet erosion is common on agricultural lands, and understanding the dynamics of the erosive process as well as the quantification of soil loss is important for both soil scientists and managers. However, measuring rates of soil loss from sheet erosion has proved difficult due to requiring the detection of relatively small surface changes over extended areas. Consequently, such measurements have relied on the use of erosion plots, which have limited spatial coverage and have high operating costs. For measuring the larger erosion rates characteristic of rill and gully erosion, structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry has been demonstrated to be a valuable tool. Here, we demonstrate the first direct validation of UAV-SfM measurements of sheet erosion using sediment collection data collected from erosion plots. Three erosion plots (12 m × 4 m) located at Lavras, Brazil, with bare soil exposed to natural rainfall from which event sediment and runoff was monitored, were mapped during two hydrological years (2016 and 2017), using a UAV equipped with a RGB camera. DEMs of difference (DoD) were calculated to detect spatial changes in the soil surface topography over time and to quantify the volumes of sediments lost or gained. Precision maps were generated to enable precision estimates for both DEMs to be propagated into the DoD as spatially variable vertical uncertainties. The point clouds generated from SfM gave mean errors of ~2.4 mm horizontally (xy) and ~1.9 mm vertically (z) on control and independent check points, and the level of detection (LoD) along the plots ranged from 1.4 mm to 7.4 mm. The soil loss values obtained by SfM were significantly (p < 0.001) correlated (r2 = 95.55%) with those derived from the sediment collection. These results open up the possibility to use SfM for erosion studies where channelized erosion is not the principal mechanism, offering a cost-effective method for gaining new insights into sheet, and interrill, erosion processes.
