In this work, we implemented an off-axis digital holographic microscopy (DHM) setup to study the behavior of liquid drops on nanostructured porous silicon (PS) membranes. When a liquid comes into contact with the PS structure, capillary action and surface tension give rise to imbibition of the liquid into the intricate volume of the pores. At the same time, the vapor field developed around the drop enhances liquid condensation and evaporation into and from the pores. The complex interplay between these phenomena (capillary driven internal flows, condensation, and evaporation) is not yet fully understood but the methods we propose can provide new insights. We demonstrate how DHM allows determining the filling fraction of the porous membrane around drying drops of water and isobutyl alcohol. The phase information obtained from registered holograms provides quantitative information that permits to reconstruct the filling fraction along the porous membrane and its evolution during the drying process. Additionally, relevant parameters such as speed and contact angle during retraction of the drops can be measured. These methods can be further extended to other porous materials, such as porous alumina, micro- and macro-PS, to develop better fluid-dynamic models for describing fluid behavior in highly confined structures. Porous composite battery electrode performance is influenced by a large number of manufacturing decisions. While it is common to evaluate only finished electrodes when making process adjustments, one must then make inferences about the fabrication process dynamics from static results, which makes process optimization very costly and time-consuming. To get information about the dynamics of the manufacturing processes of these composites, we have built a miniature coating and drying apparatus capable of fabricating lab-scale electrode laminates while operating within an X-ray beamline hutch. Using this tool, we have collected the first radiography image sequences of lab-scale battery electrode coatings in profile, taken throughout drying processes conducted under industrially relevant conditions. To assist with interpretation of these image sequences, we developed an automated image analysis program. Here, we discuss our observations of battery electrode slurry samples, including stratification and long-term fluid flow, and their relevance to composite electrode manufacturing.

Inkjet-printed micro-patterns on hydrophobic surfaces have promising applications in the fabrication of microscale devices such as organic thin-film transistors. The low wettability of the surface prevents the inkjet-printed droplets from spreading, connecting to each other, and forming a pattern. Consequently, it is challenging to form micro-patterns on surfaces with low wettability. Here, we propose a sequential printing and drying method to form micro-patterns and control their shape. The first set of droplets is inkjet-printed at a certain spacing and dried. The second set of droplets is printed between these dry anchors on the surface with low wettability. As a result, a stable bridge on the surface with low wettability forms. This printing method is extended to more complicated shapes such as triangles. By implementing an energy minimization technique, a simple model was devised to predict the shape of the inkjet-printed micro-patterns while confirming that their equilibrium shape is mainly governed by surface tension forces. The gradient descent method was utilized with parametric boundaries to emulate droplet pinning and wettability of the anchors and to prevent convergence issues from occurring in the simulations. AbstractTo optimize the drying process of bamboo bundles, this study investigates the heat and mass transfer behavior during the drying process by using temperature sensors to measure the temperature field at different positions and track the overall moisture content over time. Additionally, a heat transfer model is used to simulate and predict the drying process. The analysis of the experimental results indicates that the diameter of the bamboo bundles has a greater impact on the drying rate than the drying temperature. At the same temperature, the drying time significantly decreases as the temperature increases. Under drying conditions at 80 °C, the average drying rate constant is 0.072 for bamboo bundles with a diameter of 40 mm, whereas it is only 0.015 for bundles with a diameter of 100 mm. Using Newton’s law of cooling, the convective heat transfer coefficient calculation method was derived. The average convective heat transfer coefficients at 40, 60, and 80 °C were calculated to be 6.16 W/(m2 K), 7.14 W/(m2 K), and 7.22 W/(m2 K), respectively. A mathematical model was established for the temperature at the center of the bamboo bundles, the temperature of the drying medium, the diameter of the bamboo bundles, and the drying time. This model effectively simulates the temperature variation inside the bamboo bundles, and the temperature simulation data fits well with the measured values, with a standard error of less than 2.8 °C and a prediction error of less than 6.1%. This coupled model and method provide a theoretical basis for predicting and controlling the bamboo bundle drying process, reducing energy and time consumption in actual production. AbstractThe final particle moisture content of ceramic slurry spray drying affects the processing, product quality, and process energy consumption. While the real-time moisture content determination is very difficult for spray drying process due to nonlinear, severe lag, interference factors, and complexity of the systems, the high temperature, high humidity drying environment and short drying process. In current work, an improved moth optimization (IMFO) algorithm combined with backpropagation neural network (BPNN) was proposed to predict the moisture content of ceramic slurry particles during spray drying. The performance of the model is trained and tested. Results demonstrate that IMFO has better convergence ability and speed compared to other algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO) and gravitational search algorithm (GSA). The IMFO-BPNN model achieves a MAE of 0.0293, RMSE of 0.0383, and R2 value of 0.9113, outperforming the prediction performance of BPNN and MFO-BPNN models. The absolute error rate of the IMFO-BPNN model (0–5%) is lower compared to BPNN (5–10%) and MFO-BPNN model (>10%), showcasing superior accuracy in predicting moisture content. AbstractThe study investigates the drying behavior and desalination effectiveness of porous ceramic tiles made from fired clay materials like bricks or pottery on soil columns initially saturated with saline solution. Evaporation kinetics experiments compared the drying of saline soil with and without a ceramic tile. For soil without a ceramic cover, salt precipitation formed an efflorescent crust that initially (t ∼ 30 h) reduced the evaporation rate. However, with continued drying, the tensile stress caused cracks in the crust, allowing increased evaporation through the cracks (t > 200 h). When covered with a ceramic poultice, the saline solution was wicked into the porous ceramic by capillary action. Rapid salt efflorescence was observed on the ceramic surface. The ceramic layer initially reduced the soil evaporation rate due to pore clogging caused by salt precipitation. The pore structure characteristics of the ceramics significantly impacted their desalination performance. After an initial fast drying period controlled by evaporation, a reduced drying rate was observed as salt clogging effects became dominant, especially for the low porosity ceramic (t ∼20 h). The porous ceramic poultices could effectively extract salts from the soil, but their desalination efficiency depended critically on their pore structure properties. An industrial-based clay ceramic with large and more connected pores (porosity 0.33) was found to be around 62% more efficient in removing NaCl than a handmade pottery with small pores (porosity 0.18). The growing interest in cost-effective and high-performing perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has driven extensive research. However, the challenge lies in upscaling PSCs while maintaining high performance. This study focuses on achieving uniform and compact perovskite films without pinholes and interfacial voids during upscaling from small PSCs to large-area modules. Competition in nucleation at concavities with various angles on rough-textured substrates during the gas-pumping drying process, coupled with different drying rates across the expansive film, aggravates these issues. Consequently, substrate roughness notably influences the deposition window of compact large-area perovskite films. We propose a supersaturation regulation approach aimed at achieving compact deposition of high-quality perovskite films over large areas. This involves introducing a rapid drying strategy to induce a high-supersaturation state, thereby equalizing nucleation across diverse concavities. This breakthrough enables the production of perovskite photovoltaics with high efficiencies of 25.58, 21.86, and 20.62% with aperture areas of 0.06, 29, and 1160 square centimeters, respectively. It was precisely because LiNi 0. 5 Mn 1. 5 O4 cathode material had many advantages, including high voltage, high power, no pollution, low cost, etc., that it became a research hotspot for lithium-ion cathode materials. Although LiNi 0. 5 Mn 1. 5 O4 has a three-dimensional Li + diffusion channel, there are still some problems that lead to capacity decay and reduced cycling stability, limiting its commercial application. In this paper, the LiNi 0. 5 Mn 1. 5 O4 cathode material was prepared by the freezing precipitation method. We studied the effects of different drying methods, such as blast drying, water bath drying and freeze-drying on the structure, morphology and electrochemical properties of LiNi 0. 5 Mn 1. 5 O4 cathode materials. The study found that the LiNi 0. 5 Mn 1. 5 O4 cathode material prepared by the precipitation-freeze-drying method had a complete crystal form, a stable structure and no LixNi 1 − x O impurity peak. The SEM image showed that the particles were smaller and had a smooth surface. The initial discharge-specific capacity at 0.1 C was 105.2 mAh⋅g − 1 . After 50 cycles, its specific discharge capacity was 99.4 mAh⋅g − 1 and the capacity retention rate was 94.5%. AbstractThis paper was conducted to model the drying kinetics of Capparis spinosa buds using dragonfly swarm optimized nonlinear regression and to compare the impact of drying treatments on their quality. Experiments included hot-air convective drying (HACD) from 40 to 120 °C, vacuum drying (VD) at 40, 60, and 80 °C, microwave drying (MD) ranging from 200 to 1000 W. Out of 30 models tested, the drying kinetics fitted best with Jena Das model in both HACD and VD and modified Midilli for MD. The comparison between the drying treatments used indicated that when taking into account the quality of the dried caper, VD at 80 °C was the most effective, resulting in a high-quality caper with a well-preserved color (ΔE = 7.47), high bioactives (TPC = 30.18mgGAE/gDW and TFC = 10.27 mg QE/gDW) and radical scavenging abilities (DPPH = 0.249 and ABTS = 4.448 mg/mL) at the expense of long duration (6h) and high specific energy consumption (50.667 kWh/kg). On the other hand, when considering the drying behavior MD ranked best with samples dried at 1000 W showing high diffusivities 2.04e−8 m2s−1 low energy consumption (MER 0.1216 kg/h), and short drying times (12 mn). Cinnamomum tamala or Indian bay leaf is a widely used spice in the Asian subcontinent. The aim of this study was to assess the contents and composition of essential oils and volatiles internal pool in C. tamala leaves obtained from different drying practices such as, sun drying, freeze drying, shade drying and simultaneous oven drying at 60°C and 40°C, when compared with market-available dry leaves. Out of five different practices tested, leaves when oven dried at 60°C performed best in terms of free-radical scavenging capacities, internal pool of volatile contents (257.25 ± 37.57 μg/g of dried leaf tissue) and yields of essential oils (0.25%). This was followed by freeze-dried leaves, which showed 0.2% essential oils yield. Among the natural drying, sun dried leaves exhibited high yield of essential oils (0.16%). Performance of shade dried leaves was shown to be lowest i.e. 0.11% essential oils yield but was comparable with the yield of market-available leaves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The growing world population necessitates the implementation of appropriate processing technologies for edible insects. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of distinct drying techniques, including convective drying at 70 °C (70CD) and 90 °C (90CD) and freeze-drying (FD), on the drying kinetics, physical characteristics (water activity, color), chemical characteristics (chemical composition, amino acid profile, oil properties, total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity, mineral composition, FTIR), and presence of hazards (allergens, microorganisms) of blanched yellow mealworm larvae. The freeze-drying process results in greater lightness and reduced moisture content and water activity. The study demonstrated that the freeze-dried insects exhibited lower contents of protein and essential amino acids as compared to the convective-dried insects. The lowest content of total polyphenols was found in the freeze-dried yellow mealworm larvae; however, the highest antioxidant activity was determined for those insects. Although the oil isolated from the freeze-dried insects exhibited the lowest acid and peroxide values, it proved to have the lowest PUFA content and oxidative stability. All the samples met the microbiological criteria for dried insects. The results of the study demonstrate that a high temperature during the CD method does not result in the anticipated undesirable changes. In the present study, the performance of a solar dryer supported by an indirect type wicked heat pipe was assessed. To transfer the heat from the solar collector to the drying chamber, a passive high thermal conductivity heat pipe was developed. At 1:30 pm, there was a 21 °C temperature difference between the drying chamber and the ambient air. The results indicated that after 12 hours of drying, the banana slices' moisture content dropped from 150 % d.b. to 11 % d.b. It is found that the average drying rates in Trays 1, 2, and 3 are the following: 0.1452, 0.1492, and 0.1613 kg water/kg dry matter/h. The effective moisture diffusivity ranged from 1×10−7 to 9.405×10−8 m2/s, whereas open sun drying had the lowest average effective moisture diffusivity of 3.87×10−07 m2/s. The estimated dryer efficiency was 26 %. Also the payback period of developed dryer was found to be 0.57 years. Global consumption of nori, a widely consumed commercial edible algal film, is predominant in Asian countries. As the demand for Asian cuisine rises in Brazil, there is a growing need to explore alternatives to importation, such as producing edible films using seaweeds from the Brazilian coast—specifically Ulva lactuca and Kappaphycus alvarezii. In this study, seaweed film formulations varied in concentrations, from 80% U. lactuca and 20% K. alvarezii to an equal proportion of 50% of each alga, heating at 90°C for 3 and 5 minutes. Results showed that the filmogenic suspensions had a pseudoplastic behavior, with viscosity decreasing as K. alvarezii concentration increased. The resistance of heated gels increased with higher K. alvarezii concentrations and prolonged heating times. Surface uniformity improved with elevated K. alvarezii concentration and extended heating time. As K. alvarezii concentration increased, films exhibited less intense coloration, heightened transparency, and increased solubility. Films with higher K. alvarezii content demonstrated greater tensile strength, albeit without an increase in elongation capacity. Sorption isotherms exhibited a characteristic Type II pattern, and modeling using the GAB model suggested stronger bonds in treatments with extended heating times. Despite the need for enhanced flexibility, the results indicate potential applications in snacks or as alternatives to nori. Notably, these films were produced solely with seaweeds and water, aligning with Nori's minimalistic approach. Treatments with a concentration of 60% U. lactuca and 40% K. alvarezii proved to be the most promising. Bulk density is among the fundamental properties for defining quality attributes of dehydrated foods. Mathematical models offer elegant tools for predicting bulk density and therefore optimizing dehydration processes. In this contribution, three machine learning techniques, namely extreme learning machine (ELM), support vector machine (SVM), and evolutionary polynomial regression (EPR), were assessed for predicting bulk density. Comprehensive experimental data including eight variables (product, initial moisture content, initial bulk density, pretreatment, technology, temperature, pressure, and microwave power) from 191 datasets were used to feed the models. All possible combinations of input variables were examined with ELM to obtain the optimum models involving three to eight input variables. The latter were ranked from one to eight according to their impact on the performance of the models in predicting bulk density. The results showed that the product and drying technology are the essential variables for predicting bulk density. The minimum impact on predictions was observed for pretreatment and power. The initial moisture content was shown to be relevant for predicting the bulk density of freeze-dried products. In addition, the best models obtained by ELM were examined and compared with SVM and EPR models. The SVM showed the highest accuracy, but the EPR had the best performance when both the accuracy and simplicity of the models were considered simultaneously. The developed equations can be used as tools for predicting bulk density and exploited in optimizing dehydration processes without needing costly, time-consuming, and energy-demanding experiments. As a result of increasing energy demand, seeking eco-friendly and sustainable energy resources increases the interest in renewable energy, specifically solar energy. In this study, a novel photovoltaic–thermal solar dryer system with double-pass solar air collectors and nano-enhanced absorber surface was developed, and its performance was experimentally investigated. Initially, a double-pass solar dryer (DPSD) with an absorber surface of flexible aluminum ducts coated with black matte paint was produced. Then, a double-pass solar dryer (NDPSD) consisting of flexible aluminum ducts coated with graphene and black paint was designed. These two systems were experimentally and simultaneously examined, and parameters such as energy and exergy efficiency, drying rate, and moisture ratio, which are the performance indicators of solar air collectors and the drying process, were analyzed. The sustainability parameters were also considered as a part of the analysis. The mean thermal efficiency of the solar air collectors for DPSD and NDPSD was calculated as 57.23 and 73.36%, respectively, where the airflow rates were measured as 0.024 and 0.017 kg/s. Furthermore, under the same airflow rate conditions, while the mean exergy efficiency of the collector was 27.77% for NDPSD, it was calculated as 16.64% for DPSD. Moreover, exergy efficiencies of the drying chamber varied between 27.35% and 82.20% for NDPSD and between 21.03 and 81.25% for DPSD, under the airflow rates of 0.012–0.016 kg/s conditions, respectively. BACKGROUND: Bulgur, a whole wheat product, has attracted attention in the world in recent years because of its wide usage possibility in different meals. The basic ingredients in bulgur production are wheat and water. The influence of water composition on bulgur quality has not been investigated. Iron in water can cause discolouration in foods by oxidizing and reacting with phenolic compounds and also by hardening the structure of the foods. Therefore, in the present study, the effects of the iron content of water on the quality of bulgur were examined. RESULTS: The effect of the amount of iron in water on bulgur quality was carried out and examined using water containing iron at three different levels (0, 1 and 2 ppm). Using water containing 2 ppm iron in bulgur production caused a decrease in the L* value and an increase in the YI (i.e. yellowness index), thus negatively affecting the colour of the bulgur. In bulgur prepared with water containing 2 ppm iron, the antioxidant activity was also dramatically reduced. CONCLUSION: The iron content in the water used in bulgur production did not have a negative effect on bulgur quality up to 2 ppm. The protein, ash, phenolic and mineral amounts and textural characteristics of bulgur were not affected by the concentration of iron in the water. As a result, high iron concentration in cooking water negatively affects bulgur's colour and antioxidant activity. The drying agroindustrial products is used to preserve the sensory and nutritional quality and to reduce the biological activity, preventing deterioration and loss of commercial value. The objective was to study the mathematical modeling Guava bark drying to obtain flour and to determine and evaluate the effective diffusion coefficient, get the activation energy and the thermodynamic properties in drying temperatures of 45, 55, 65 and 75 °C. The experiment was conducted Instituto Federal Goiano - Campus Rio Verde, the guava was purchased in local shops in the city of Rio Verde Goiás, in the commercial maturity. Among the analyzed models, Midilli was the best to represent the drying phenomenon. The effective diffusion coefficient increased with increasing temperature and the activation energy for liquid diffusion drying was 37,207kJ mol-1. Solar drying systems are becoming a popular alternative to traditional energy-based drying systems for agricultural products due to their effectiveness and reduced fuel consumption. Although the efficiency of solar drying systems has been thoroughly investigated, their sustainability has not been studied enough. This study aims to fill that gap by conducting a life-cycle assessment of two new solar drying systems built in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. The environmental implications of an innovative cylindrical solar-assisted drying system and a phase-change material-based solar drying system were evaluated using cradle-to-gate life-cycle analysis. The study uses the ReCiPe 2016 endpoints (H) technique to calculate various aspects such as midpoint, endpoint, single score, normalization result, and network diagram for phase-change material-based solar drying and cylindrical solar-assisted drying. Results show that phase-change material-based solar drying has an average of 40% more impact on the environment than cylindrical solar-assisted drying, with a high impact found in human non-carcinogenic toxicity, mainly due to the production of phase-change materials. However, cylindrical solar-assisted drying system crossover phase-change material based solar drying in terms of its impact on human carcinogenic toxicity and fossil resource scarcity. The contribution to global warming of phase-change material-based solar drying is 13.7% more than that of cylindrical solar-assisted drying. The endpoint characterization indicates that phase-change material-based solar drying exceeds in terms of human health (40%) and ecosystem (37.04%), whereas cylindrical solar-assisted drying surpasses phase-change material-based solar drying in terms of impacts on resources, at 14%. The early drying in phase-change material-based solar drying makes up for its higher impact than that in cylindrical solar-assisted drying, which takes 3 hours longer to dry. In the field of convective drying, several models have been proposed by different research groups, both theoretical and empirical. However, research on theoretical mathematical models has been superficial and needs to be extended. Empirical models present difficulties in their implementation in other research. It is suggested that further research should focus on obtaining models adaptable to different species and environmental conditions. The aim of this work was to analyse the current state of research on the drying process and mass transfer. It is concluded that drying is a mathematically complex process that must be modelled with differentiated equations in two stages: constant drying rate stage and decreasing drying rate stage. The modelling of the constant drying phase can be based on the convective mass transfer equation, although the prediction of the coefficient with analogies to heat transfer has deviations in biomass. Modelling of the variable rate drying phase should focus on the variation of water diffusivity in porous materials or vapour permeability as a function of material moisture and temperature. A database of homogenised equations particularised for each material needs to be generated to predict drying rates and times under predetermined convection conditions. AbstractDrying is an important step in the postharvest processing of agricultural products, as it allows the product to be preserved by reducing water activity to safe values, which stops microorganism growth and enzymatic reactions. In this context, the objective of this study was to assess how various drying temperatures, combined with ultrasonic pretreatment, affect drying rates and essential oil production. Assays were conducted according to a Central Composite Rotational Design, considering two factors with the following intervals: duration of the ultrasonic bath from 0 to 40 min, drying air temperature from 40 to 70 °C. The optimization was carried out using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation and its constituents were identified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Histochemical analyses of fresh tubers were performed. The Midilli model was the one that best described the drying kinetics of Cyperus rotundus in all treatments. The drying time of C. rotundus tubers was dependent only on temperature (decreasing linear effect), it was possible to describe the variation in drying time as a function of temperature. It was not possible to adjust a model for ultrasonic bath time or drying temperature that would optimize both essential oil yield and the drying time of C. rotundus tubers. However, in this study, shorter drying times were observed compared to previous studies on C. rotundus tubers drying in the shade at room temperature. A total of 29 chemical constituents have been identified in the essential oil extracted from C. rotundus tubers, of which the majority are: 3,4-dimethyl-3-cyclohexen-1-carboxaldehyde (19.23%); caryophyllene oxide (17.63%); and α-cyperone (9.54%). AbstractThe primary heat transfer source in the conventional multi-cylinder drying of paper and board is conduction. Conduction is facilitated by high-tension contact with steam-heated cylinders, while convective drying, the main mass transfer source, operates as heated air flows over the article web in the pockets. This conduction process occurs at elevated temperatures and contact pressures to ensure effective contact between the wet paper web and the heated cylinders. The contact pressures and temperatures of the hot surface significantly influence the conductive drying characteristics. This research paper presents an experimental study that involves designing a simple lab-scale setup with in-situ and continuous sensing capabilities for various commercially available grades of paper and board. Embedded thermocouples measure the temperatures of the heated platen and the sheet, allowing the collection of flux data to determine heat transfer characteristics. The goal of this study is to ascertain the instantaneous contact coefficients for different basis weights as a function of moisture content. Ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi L.) is considered a valuable spice and medicinal herb. In this study, the essential oil content and composition of the aerial parts of ajowan were investigated under different drying treatments (sun, shade, oven at 45 °C, oven at 65 °C, microwave, and freeze drying). Moreover, the phenolic content, flavonoid content, and antioxidant capacity of samples were also assessed. Fresh samples produced the highest essential oil content (1.05%), followed by those treated under sun (0.7%) and shade drying (0.95%). Based on gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), thirty compounds were determined in which thymol (34.84–83.1%), carvacrol (0.15–32.36%), p-cymene (0.09–13.66%), and γ-terpinene (3.12–22.58%) were the most abundant. Among the drying methods, freeze drying revealed the highest thymol content, followed by drying in a 45 °C oven. The highest TPC (total phenolic content) and TFC (total flavonoid content) were obtained in the fresh sample (38.23 mg TAE g−1 dry weight (DW)) and in the sample oven-dried at 45 °C (7.3 mg QE g−1 DW), respectively. Based on the HPLC results, caffeic acid (18.04–21.32 mg/100 gDW) and ferulic acid (13.102–19.436 mg/100 g DW) were the most abundant phenolic acids, while among flavonoids, rutin constituted the highest amount (10.26–19.88 mg/100 gDW). Salt particles generated by aerosol generator are commonly used in air filtration test. As a common phenomenon, the number of generated particles increases with the salt concentration in the atomization solution. Thus far, the dependence of the particle number on the concentration of the atomization solution is not fully understood. In this study, two hypotheses were proposed to explain this phenomenon: i) a single droplet generates multiple solid particles, and the generated particle number is influenced by the salt concentration, and ii) the original droplet number increases with an increase in the salt concentration of the atomization solution. By observing the particle formation process of the levitated millimeter-scale NaCl droplet, one droplet was found to generate one particle in free air. However, whether these results are applicable to micrometer-scale droplets remains to be determined. In situ measurements were performed to detect the size distributions of the original droplets generated by the atomization solutions with various salt concentrations. A more concentrated atomization solution induced a higher number of original droplets. Particle formation patterns of droplets on glass substrates and filaments were demonstrated. Traditional observation methods for droplet drying are unsuitable for studying the particle formation of atomized droplets because of the large difference in droplet size and the existence of external forces. An innovative experimental study is presented to improve the performance of solar collectors designed for solar drying systems, focusing on the use of recycled aluminum can waste and the development of the air solar collector. The latter's absorber is made up of 10 cans with a diameter of 65 mm, a length of 160 mm and a thickness of 0.3 mm, forming a cylindrical finned pipe. Several collector configurations under identical weather conditions, including four collectors with different rows of rods (4, 8, 12–14 rows) and a single collector, were analyzed and compared. The thermal performance of this new collector model was assessed on the basis of solar fluxes and collector inlet and outlet temperatures, collected during the month of September 2021. Experimental results revealed that this collector can increase the outlet temperature of air from 32°C up to 130°C, in the case of a 14-row collector. The study also showed that, at low flow rates, the can-equipped collector achieves an efficiency of 54% for the case of a 14-row collector, compared with 34% for the simple case, representing a 20% improvement over the single case. This study explores the potential of olive leaves, long integral to Mediterranean traditional medicine, as a rich source of valuable compounds. The challenge lies in their considerable water content, hindering these compounds' full valorization. Four drying methods (air-drying, oven-drying, freeze-drying and solar-drying) were investigated for their impact on nutrient and bioactive compound content in the leaves of four olive varieties ("Arbequina", "Koroneiki", "Menara" and "Picholine Marocaine") cultivated in Morocco. In their fresh state, "Picholine Marocaine" exhibited the highest protein levels (6.11%), "Arbequina" had the highest phenolic content (20.18 mg gallic acid equivalents/g fresh weight (FW)), and "Koroneiki" and "Menara" were highest in flavonoids (3.28 mg quercetin equivalents/g FW). Specific drying methods proved optimal for different varieties. Oven-drying at 60 °C and 70 °C effectively preserved protein, while phenolic content varied with drying conditions. Air-drying and freeze-drying demonstrated effectiveness for flavonoids. In addition, an analytical approach using high-performance liquid chromatography and diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) was applied to investigate the effects of the different drying methods on the bioactive fraction of the analyzed samples. The results showed qualitative and quantitative differences depending on both the variety and the drying method used. A total of 11 phenolic compounds were tentatively identified, with oleuropein being the most abundant in all the samples analyzed. The freeze-dried samples showed the highest content of oleuropein in the varieties "Arbequina" and "Picholine Marocaine" compared to the other methods analyzed. In contrast, "Koroneiki" and "Menara" had higher oleuropein content when air dried. This study aims to maximize the post-harvest quality of Moutan Cortex and reduce energy consumption. Radio frequency vacuum (RFV) technology was used to dehydrate Moutan Cortex in this study to investigate the effects of different drying temperatures, plate spacing, and vacuum degree on the drying kinetics, physicochemical quality, and microstructure of Moutan Cortex. The results showed that RFV drying shortened the dehydration time of the Moutan Cortex by 10.71–28.57% and increased the drying rate by 15.79–54.39% compared to hot-air drying. The best color (∆E = 6.08 ± 0.28, BI = 26.97 ± 0.98) and relatively high retention of polysaccharides, total phenolics, total flavonoids, antioxidant properties, paeonol, gallic acid, paeoniflorin, and benzoylpaeoniflorin contents were observed in the dried products of Moutan Cortex at a drying temperature of 50 °C, spacing of 90 mm, and vacuum of 0.025 MPa. Analyzing the microstructure, it was found that RFV drying could effectively inhibit the shrinkage and collapse of the cellular structure, and a regular and loose honeycomb pore structure appeared inside the samples, which contributed to the rapid migration of the internal moisture. To provide food supply chains, reduce losses from various crops after the harvesting process, and also to preserve vegetable and fruit crops purchased for consumption from rotting and not being wasted. The drying process is one of the most appropriate ways to solve such problems. In this research, several simple thermal modeling methods were proposed to perform the drying process through open sun drying (OSD) under forced pressure (FGD) and natural convection (NGD). This study was conducted at the King Faisal University Training and Research Station (25.4° latitude). North, longitude 49.6° east, height 142 meters above sea level). The thermal performance analysis of the models was evaluated by calculating the amount of solar radiation, air temperature, product temperature, moisture evaporation rate, and wind speed. The results obtained showed that drying inside the greenhouse is the best alternative to drying under direct sunlight, so that the maximum temperatures were obtained, ranging between 55 to 52 in FGD and 40-45 inside NGD. Also, the heat transfer coefficient was highest in the amount of moisture removed from the product, reaching its maximum. The weight of the product was reduced to 83%, 80 and 73%, in GFD, NGD and OSD, respectively Accordingly, it was found that drying gave the highest expected results, and the temperature of the product ranged between 9.25 to 14.36 and 4.93 to 10.32, and the correlation coefficient ranged between 0.95-0.52 and 0.95. -0.89 at OSD and NGD respectively. Moisture evaporation from the product is 28.92-2.77 at NGD and moisture evaporation exerted for FGD is 31.35 and the correlation coefficient for the product at FGD ranges from 0.93-0.84. The product and greenhouse temperature range are between 0.99-0.96. The moisture evaporation rate indicating that the values obtained were well matched. The article is devoted to the study of the process of removing moisture from capillary-porous materials by its dispersion during the collapse of cylindrically-shaped cavitation bubbles formed in the capillaries of the material under ultrasonic exposure. A model has been proposed and developed that made it possible to explain the mechanism of dispersion during realization of the life cycle of a bubble in a capillary — slow growth, rapid expansion with deformation, and subsequent collapse. The range of sound pressure levels at which dispersion begins (from 150 dB) to the level at which bubbles reach the size of the capillary and the increase in the drying efficiency stops (170 dB) has been determined theoretically. It was also shown that for maximum efficiency in moisture removal, the size of the dehydrated sample must correspond to the ultrasonic wavelength in air. The mechanism of ultrasonic dispersion of liquid during drying has been confirmed experimentally and it has been established that to reduce the drying time by more than 40%, exposure with a level in the range of 165–170 dB is necessary, and the dried materials must be placed in the form of particles or layers having dimensions or thicknesses corresponding to the ultrasonic wave length. The practical implementation of ultrasonic drying using the example of food products (red beets) confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism and ensured a reduction in drying time by 1.9 times on reducing energy demand by 1.6 times. Citrus peels are rich in flavonoids, and some valuable flavonoids with health benefits, such as polymethoxyflavones (PMFs), are found almost exclusively in citrus peels. While the peels usually regarded as by-product, leading to source waste. As a traditional method, drying is helpful to increase added-value of peels which can be used as medicine. However, the variations in variety and quantity of flavonoids during drying processes of citrus peel remain unknown. In this study, Guanxi honey pomelo peel investigated the effect of different drying methods on flavonoids content in citrus peels. Five drying techniques, namely, freeze-drying (FD) and hot air drying (HAD) at 30 °C, 50 °C, 70 °C and 90 °C were used employed for drying the pomelo peels and HPLC-Q-TOF-MS analysis identified 39 flavonoids changes in flavonoids across samples. FD proved to better preserve most glycosidic flavonoids. Flavonoid aglycones could be better preserved in samples of HAD at 30 ℃, 50 ℃ HAD and 90 ℃ HAD. Specifically, HAD at 30 ℃ and 50 ℃ HAD is beneficial for obtaining more valued polymethoxyflavones such as 5-hydroxy-6,7,4′-trimethoxyflavone, 5,7,8,4′-tetramethoxyflavone and 3,5,6,7,8,3′,4′-heptamethoxyflavone. The 90℃ HAD resulted in the highest content of naringenin and 5,7,8,4′-tetramethoxyflavanone. This study demonstrated the transformation characteristics of flavonoids in pomelo peel under varying drying conditions, providing benefits for comprehensive utilization of pomelo peel in extracting valued-added flavonoids. In the production of cast aluminum automotive parts, cores made of sand and binders are often used to create the complex features that cannot be formed by the mold, such as internal passages. Core binders can be grouped into two different categories: organic and inorganic, depending on the binder system used. Conventional organic binders use petroleum-based materials that are sources of harmful gases. In contrast, inorganic binders such as sodium silicates (water glass) are environmentally friendly. The fabrication of inorganic cores requires a drying step that involves thermal dehydration (using hot box and hot air injection) and chemical reactions (polymerization) to give the sand core the necessary strength to withstand the constraints developed during core storage and the casting process. This drying step increases the duration of the process and affects the production line. This study evaluated different thin layer drying models to understand the drying behavior of sand cores in the inorganic process that uses both hot air and warm box. The Page model was found to best describe the drying kinetics based on experimental measurements on a rectangular core. The sorption properties of the core were determined by characterizing the desorption isotherms at three different temperatures. Sawn-timber drying is the wood industry's most time- and energy-consuming process. This process can be more efficient than the conventional method by elevating the dry-bulb temperature to above 100 °C in a high-temperature drying (HTD) process, which for some species shortens the drying process by up to 50% without deteriorating the quality. Comprehending the complex correlation between the wood drying physics at high temperatures and the anatomical features of the specific species, along with its mechanical and physical properties, is crucial, as it limited its application from being broadly implemented in industry and the necessity of generalizing this method for wood species. The present study has been conducted to comprehensively review and tackle the challenges of applying this method on various species and the consequences, such as high moisture content gradients resulting in stress residual, unevenness, and color changes. Energy, environment, and economic (3E) assessments of HTD were evaluated. The accelerated drying process in HTD reduces heat losses and air leaks, resulting in higher energy efficiency than the conventional methods. Furthermore, it was proved to be 20% economically in the long term. Confliction in reported studies, such as HTD's effect on permeability and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, was raised, highlighting the importance of further studies for generalizing this method to adapt appropriate drying schedules, focusing on Scandinavian species by referring to previous industrial trials. Fresh Oudemansiella raphanipies are rich in protein and prone to deterioration during natural storage. Hot air drying is typically used to extend shelf life. However, some O. raphanipies may not dry during the actual drying process because of different placements, which can adversely affect the entire product. To detect dryness, we introduced ORD-Net, a model based on RGB images captured using a smartphone camera. Incorporating residual hybrid dilated convolution and efficient channel attention modules, ORD-Net outperforms mainstream algorithms, achieving high accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and a Matthews coefficient of 85.3, 82.2, 91.2, 86.5%, and 0.709, respectively. Additionally, experiments on various CPUs confirm its adaptability for industrial use, with AMD Ryzen CPUs performing optimally with an average processing time of 0.67 s for a single target. This study proposes a convenient and cost-effective identification method that can effectively determine the drying status of O. raphanipies, thus laying the foundation for the high-throughput identification of the drying conditions of postharvest O. raphanipies. This research examined the response of flax-fiber-reinforced composites (FFRCs) to simulated outdoor conditions involving repeated exposure to salt fog and drying. The study investigated the effect of cycles on the toughness of the FFRCs. To achieve this, the composites were exposed to humidity (salt fog) for 10 days, followed by 18 days of drying in cycles. A total of up to 3 cycles, each lasting 4 weeks, were conducted over a 12-week period. Throughout this process, changes in the material's weight, water absorption, and mechanical properties were monitored by water uptake and three-point bending tests. The findings revealed the significant impact of these humid–dry cycles on the mechanical response of the FFRCs. When exposed to humid environments without drying, the composite's toughness increased significantly, due to a weakening effect more pronounced for stiffness, with strength reductions of about 20%. Drying and sanitising equipment has been very common in industrial plants since the pandemic. These are devices that consume significant amounts of energy. The best solution is to use a drying chamber equipped with a heat pump, which allows partial recovery of the energy. In the design of the drying chamber, the drying time is important, which depends both on the parameters of the heat pump itself, and the geometry and airflow of the drying chamber. The geometry and airflow supply should be arranged to ensure a uniform distribution of velocity throughout the drying area. For this purpose, the use of CFD simulations has been proposed. A model was developed in ANSYS/FLUENT where all model parameters, including the optimal mesh density, turbulence models, etc., were determined. The model was verified on the experimental results of the basic design of the chamber. Then an innovative design was proposed that was modelled and optimised in terms of the distribution of the inlet's perforation. The final design was made, and, at the same time, the simulation's results were verified by measuring the velocity of airflow in the new design. Sea cucumbers, members of the echinoderm class Holothuroidea, are marine invertebrates with ecological significance and substantial commercial value. With approximately 1700 species, these organisms contribute to marine ecosystems through nutrient cycling and face various threats, including overfishing and habitat loss. Despite their importance, they are extensively exploited for diverse applications, from seafood to pharmaceuticals. This study investigates sea cucumbers' nutritional profile and bioactive elements, emphasizing their role as sources of essential compounds with potential health benefits. The demand for sea cucumbers, especially in dried form, is significant, prompting exploration into various drying techniques. Examining the global trade in sea cucumbers highlights their economic importance and the conservation challenges they face. Conservation efforts, such as awareness campaigns and international collaboration, are evaluated as essential steps in combating illicit trade and promoting the sustainable stewardship of sea cucumber populations. Practical Application: Around 1700 species of sea cucumbers were identified as vital ecological scavengers in the Holothuroidea class. High commercial value due to their health benefits, particularly their demonstrated inhibitory effect against various types of cancer. The aim of this study was to optimize drying conditions during ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration and subsequent microwave drying of red beetroot using the Box-Behnken design. For this purpose, ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration was performed at different ultrasonic powers (50, 75, and 100 W), sonication times (20, 40, and 60 min), and salt concentrations (0%, 15%, and 30%). The subsequent drying procedures were conducted with 231, 518, and 805 W microwave power. The best condition was selected as 5.15% salt concentration, 20 min sonication time, 50 W ultrasonic power, and 716.45 W microwave power. The responses obtained under optimum conditions were determined as 68.06%, 9.54 mg GAE/g dm, 28.23, 42.66, and 3.08 for DPPH• % inhibition, total phenolic content, L *, a *, and b * values, respectively. While favorable impacts on color were detected for the applied pretreatments, the DPPH• scavenging activities of the dried beetroot were determined to be more significant after ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration. Furthermore, the drying kinetics of beetroot were evaluated according to the Midilli et al. model. When the fit to the model was investigated, it was compatible at R 2 > 0.90 level. As a result, the ultrasonic-assisted osmotic dehydration pretreatment performed before the microwave drying method preserved the quality characteristics of beetroot samples and was successfully applied. The present paper successfully employs a modified sol-gel method to synthesize TiO 2 –SiO 2 nanocomposites. By incorporating a hygrometer and energy monitoring devices, we achieved real-time monitoring of the drying process and optimized temperature control. Energy consumption during the drying process was observed, revealing that higher temperatures result in shorter drying times. The lowest energy consumption was recorded at 80 °C, while the optimal temperature, obtained from the conversion of the optimization diagram, occurred at 77 °C. Characterization was performed using different tools such as XRD, FT-IR analysis, XPS, FE-SEM-EDS, and HRTEM to determine the size and distribution of elements, crystal structure, and chemical bonds. Furthermore, an anti-bacterial test was conducted, revealing that the nanocomposite exhibited superior antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Meeting the required standards, the TiO 2 –SiO 2 nanocomposite produced by this method shows the potential to create a cleaner and more efficient environment in medical and industrial applications. Summary: Preserving food products from oxidation improves their quality and stability. This study compares the effects of storage on L‐theanine, caffeine, moisture content and antioxidant activity of spray‐dried and freeze‐dried white tea infusions. The antioxidant activities of both dried infusions were restored over a 60‐day storage. On Day 60, the L‐theanine and caffeine levels of the freeze‐dried samples were respectively 1.45 ± 0.03 mg mL−1 and 2.23 ± 0.04 mg mL−1 compared with 1.16 ± 0.03 mg mL−1 and 1.97 ± 0.01 mg mL−1 on Day 0. In the spray‐dried samples, the L‐theanine was 0.32 ± 0.01 mg mL−1 on Day 60 and 0.36 ± 0.02 mg mL−1 on Day 0, while caffeine remained unchanged. Regarding undried/control samples, L‐theanine and caffeine declined from respectively 0.29 ± 0.0004 mg mL−1 and 0.33 ± 0.01 mg mL−1 on Day 0 to 0.2 ± 0.001 mg mL−1 and 0.26 ± 0.02 mg mL−1 on Day 60, associated with a decrease in DPPH activity from 75.87% (Day 0) to 15.34% (Day 60). Freeze‐drying and spray‐drying tea infusions yielded functional products with stable antioxidant activity and moisture. Both drying techniques are reliable for preserving tea preparations. Summary: Total carotenoid amounts of rocket samples were established between 120.56 μg g−1 (fresh) and 130.06 μg g−1 (microwave). In addition, total phenol and flavonoid results of rockets dried in microwave and oven were found between 655.53 (oven) and 1790.96 mg GAE/100 g (fresh) to 254.03 (oven) and 1668.83 mg/100 g (fresh), respectively. The protein amounts of rockets were determined between 11.00% (microwave) and 11.60% (oven). P and K values of fresh and dried rockets were found between 3148.36 (oven) and 3752.33 mg kg−1 (fresh) to 39 363.75 (microwave) and 36 883.41 mg/kg (fw), respectively. Also, Ca and Mg results of fresh and dried‐rockets were found between 26 739.33 (microwave) and 29 534.48 mg kg−1 (fresh) to 3125.32 (microwave) and 3431.70 mg kg−1 (fresh), respectively. Drying walnuts in conventional drying bins can result in uneven drying reducing quality and shelf life. Improved designs for drying bins are needed, but direct testing of new configurations of drying bins is expensive and time-consuming, so there is a need for a more rapid and less expensive method to investigate drying bin designs. An alternative method to direct testing of bins is computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, which can be performed rapidly. CDF modeling could provide researchers with valuable information about airflow through drying walnuts that is impractical to obtain by direct measurement. The CFD modeling method based on permeability previously employed to model airflow through drying in-shell peanuts in a drying trailer was successfully applied to modeling airflow through drying in-shell walnuts in drying bins. The results of the CFD model were validated by finding airflow patterns from the CFD analysis that corresponded to those determined from direct measurements. After validating model results, researchers investigated modifying the design of conventional stadium-style drying bins by adding multiple vented end air tubes of various lengths that extended up into the drying walnuts from the floor of the bin. CFD modeling provided researchers with a way to visualize and quantify airflow passing up through walnuts in the modified bin design and then compare it to airflow passing up through walnuts in an unmodified bin design. Study results indicated that airflow quickly slowed in the modified bin design as air moved away from the ends of the air tubes and airflow between the air tubes was slower when compared to airflow in bins without air tubes. The addition of the air tubes to walnut drying bins while producing small areas of faster airflow did not appreciably increase the overall rate of airflow or result in a more even distribution of airflow. The CFD model analysis indicated that the addition of multiple air tubes that released air from end caps at various levels in the drying walnuts would not be expected to enhance walnut drying. The shelf life of green chillies is very low due to high-water activity (aw = 0.90 ± 0.01). Balancing aw and moisture content is crucial for maintaining freshness, quality and extending shelf life of green chillies. To attain microbial and biochemical stability, the aw should be reduced to 0.6 and 0.3, respectively. Hence, a controlled drying process was introduced. The 0.6 aw (62 ℃/360 min + 35 ℃/60 min) and 0.3 aw (75 ℃/600 min + 40 ℃/240 min) green chillies improved bioactives retention, colour and texture; but could not completely prevent the growth of microorganisms. Therefore, post-drying, a decontamination process i.e., pulsed light (PL) treatment of 0.53 to 2.59 Jcm−2 (1.7–2.1 kV/120–360 s) was employed. Along with microbial decontamination and enzyme inactivation, PL preserved better physicochemical characteristics in 0.6 and 0.3 aw than 0.9 (fresh) green chillies. While, there is 89.8%, 89.0%, 88.8%, and 93.3% retention of phenolics, antioxidants, flavonoids, and capsaicinoids, respectively, in 0.3 aw green chillies at PL fluence of 2.59 J cm−2 fluence. Alongside, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, and chlorophyll showed 30%, 19%, and 26% loss, respectively, in 0.6 aw green chillies at 2.59 J cm−2. Drying followed by PL treatment ensured that the green chillies were safe for consumption, and met regulatory standards while maintaining their quality attributes. Multispectral imaging (MSI) is an emerging technique that ranges from light spectrum of UV–NIR (405–970 nm) used for rapid determination of phenolic contents. The current study focuses on the determination of total phenolic content (TPC) in a fast and non‐invasive way in hot‐air dehydrated Lentinus edodes. The spectral information of MSI has been combined with various chemometrics like partial least squares (PLS), back propagation neural networks (BPNN), and least squares‐support vector machines (LS‐SVM) for the quantitative prediction of phenolic contents. Fresh mushrooms possessed 1.49 and 1.73 GAE g kg−1 TPC in processed samples at 10% moisture content. Comparing models, PLS acquired significant Rp with a lower RMSEP of 0.9980 and 0.1039 and was considered an outstanding algorithm, followed by LS‐SVM of 0.9777 and 0.1417 coefficient of determination and error of prediction data set, respectively. It is concluded that MSI spectroscopy produces highly significant results to determine functional food properties in a rapid and non‐destructive way. The present study will provide a strong platform for the fast online determination of phenolic profile of agricultural commodities. Practical applications: Utilization of spectroscopy for non‐destructive detection of phenolic contents is defined through the combination of chemometrics with spectra of multispectral imaging system and emphasizes control processing of postharvest horticulture produces. Transient heat conduction and mass transfer have many applications in industry such as heating, cooling, cooking, quenching of steels, freezing, and convective drying of vegetables or fruits. A novel, interactive, and fast MATLAB application, named MULTITHMT, is improved to solve multidimensional transient heat and mass transfer problems. Exact solutions are obtained for infinite rectangular bars, short cylinders, rectangular prisms, and spherical geometries. Instantaneous temperature and moisture content at any location in the objects are obtained and temperature and moisture content at the final time are displayed in two- and three-dimensional graphics. Quenching of steel for rectangle bars and cooking of cylindrical or rectangular prism-shaped meat are represented for transient heat transfer. Cooling of spherical commercial bronze and iron is also investigated. For transient mass transfer, convective drying of rectangular prunes, bananas of short cylinders, and spherical cornelian cherries with different operational conditions is calculated. Drying of cubes with the same shape and different moisture diffusivities is investigated. MULTITHMT is the only program that uses exact solutions to calculate multidimensional heat and mass transfer problems in the available literature. It is also the only application that can calculate the target time with a given temperature or moisture content for any specific location in the studied multidimensional objects. This application can be used for educational purposes in several engineering departments and industrial applications where transient heat and mass transfer processes are needed. The main objective of this study is to analyze the drying kinetics of Citrus medica by using the freeze-drying method at various thicknesses (3, 5, and 7 mm) and cabin pressures (0.008, 0.010, and 0.012 mbar). Additionally, the study aims to evaluate the efficacy of an artificial neural network (ANN) in estimating crucial parameters like dimensionless mass loss ratio (MR), moisture content, and drying rate. Feedforward multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network architecture was employed to model the freeze-drying process of Citrus medica. The ANN architecture was trained using a dataset covering various drying conditions and product characteristics. The training process, including hyperparameter optimization, is detailed and the performance of the ANN is evaluated using robust metrics such as RMSE and R2. As a result of comparing the experimental MR with the predicted MR of the ANN modeling created by considering various product thicknesses and cabin pressures, the R2 was found to be 0.998 and the RMSE was 0.010574. Additionally, color change, water activity, and effective moisture diffusivity were examined in this study. As a result of the experiments, the color change in freeze-dried Citrus medica fruits was between 6.9 ± 0.2 and 21.0 ± 0.6, water activity was between 0.4086 ± 0.0104 and 0.5925 ± 0.0064, effective moisture diffusivity was between 4.19 × 10 − 11 and 21.4 × 10 − 11 , respectively. In freeze-drying experiments conducted at various cabin pressures, it was observed that increasing the slice thickness of Citrus medica fruit resulted in longer drying times, higher water activity, greater color changes, and increased effective moisture diffusivity. By applying the experimental data to mathematical models and an ANN, the optimal process conditions were determined. Featured Application: Consumers are becoming more conscious of how their eating habits influence their health, and they are more inclined to incorporate fruits and vegetables into their regular meals. In addition, they are exploring for novel raw materials with potential health benefits. Kiwiberry fruits include bioactive components such as vitamin C, carotenoids, chlorophylls, anthocyanins and phenolic acids, which contribute to their antioxidant activity. They also include lots of dietary fiber. However, they are seasonal and have a short shelf life. As a result, it is essential to adopt processing methods that ensure their availability at all times. To do this, they can be processed into a variety of products, including jams, juices, dry snacks and food powders, which can be used as components in a variety of other food and pharmaceutical items. The kiwiberry is an interesting source of bioactive compounds (micronutrients, polyphenols vitamins and pectins) and enzyme actinidine but has limited durability. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of shelf temperature (10 °C, 25 °C and 40 °C) during freeze drying on the foam-mat kiwiberry pulp drying process and the quality of the obtained material based on analyses such as moisture content, water activity, hygroscopicity, solubility, microstructure and spectral measurement using the FTIR method. The use of higher shelf temperatures during freeze drying positively influenced the drying process, reducing its duration by up to 40.7%. The shelf temperature caused changes in the dry matter content (97.2–99.6%), water activity (0.159–0.221), structure and hygroscopic properties (1.41–4.41 g water/100 g d.m.) of the kiwiberry foam mats. Foam-mat drying at 40 °C exhibited a significantly lower water activity, total porosity and hygroscopicity, providing properties favorable for good microbiological and functional stability during storage. Furthermore, this temperature applied during freeze drying resulted in an increase in the solubility of the obtained material, which indicates its possible use in the matrix of other food products. Drying process has been employed since ancient times to preserve agricultural products by reducing the moisture content. Solar dryer is one of the most commonly used dryers due to its availability, reliability, and environmentally friendly nature. It is practical in rural areas since solar dryer can be fabricated with a simple design. Despite its potential, designing a long-term, feasible solar dryer is challenging without a good understanding of its performance parameters, such as energy, exergy, economic, environmental (4E) aspect, and its impact on product quality. Therefore, many attempts have been dedicated to conducting these analyses. Nonetheless, the information obtained is only one-dimensional, and they do not reflect the actual behaviour of a solar dryer. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive and critical review of the additional 3E parameters, namely energoeconomic, exergoeconomic, and enviroeconomic. Moreover, the effect of solar drying on product quality parameters (Q) will be discussed. Furthermore, a new idea to perform energy, exergy, environmental, economic, energoeconomic, exergoeconomic, and enviroeconomic (7E) and quality analysis (7E + Q) is proposed and outlined to improve the operability of the solar dryer. Polymeric fibers are often used as a drying additive for refractory castables because they can increase their permeability, reducing the risk of pressurization that is believed to trigger explosive spalling. Despite the potential of synthetic polymers to be engineered and obtain desired properties, the required parameters for inducing permeability enhancement remain unclear. This inhibits the development of novel designed drying additives and improvement of the numerical models. This work investigates the effect of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) and cellulose fibers on the water transport in refractory castables through rapid neutron tomography, enabling the in situ visualization of the water distribution, the drying front advance and the size, intensity and duration of moisture accumulation. PE and cellulose fibers accelerate drying fronts earlier than PP, in which PE exhibits larger moisture accumulation, residual moisture behind its drying front and a slower drying rate at higher temperatures despite the early water removal initiation. In contrast, cellulose emerged as a better candidate, due to a swelling–shrinkage based mechanism. The neutron tomography observations unveil the dynamic and intricate effect of fibers in the permeability, emphasizing that safer industrial processes require a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms to develop better fibers and accurate numerical models.
