In several cases, substations have become incapable of supporting faults due to short circuit levels increasing. Fault current limiters (FCLs) are a potential solution for this problem. Among several FCL topologies presented in the literature, the saturated Iron-Core Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SIC-SFCL) has shown promising results in real tests in substations. In this context, this paper presents the impacts of the different kinds of short circuits in the SIC-SFCL device. To reproduce various types of faults, the SIC-SFCL is modeled in a 3D framework considering both ferromagnetic and superconducting non-linearities. Moreover, the proposed 3D FEM model can couple the SIC-SFCL to the electric power system, also representing the electrical grid and the protection systems. For this investigation, the DC-biased superconducting coil's normalized current density and the iron cores' magnetic flux density are examined in light of the different short circuits. The simulations are compared with measurements in a bench prototype, showing a maximum error of 16.5~%. Furthermore, different short circuit types were investigated and compared, which is possible only using a 3D model. The highest limitation occurred in the phase-to-phase short circuit case. In the DC circuit of the SIC-SFCL, the highest transient period has happened in the single-phase short circuit. At last, the phase-to-phase fault presented the highest DC current during the transient.

Tubular Joints play quite a vital role in most marine structures. It is obvious that having full control about the capacity and strength of tubular joints would be very worthy to have good knowledge about the total performance of the structure. In recent years, the application of the finite element method has become very popular in the analyses of different types of welded circular tubular joints and many commercial and open-source FE systems have been profoundly involved in these regards. Most of these software shares so much in common that it is difficult to differentiate them. This study was performed to investigate and report the usefulness of the open-source software programs in implementing finite element modeling for design applications. In this regard, with aid of the open-source finite element package Code_Aster and its user-friendly interface Salome-Meca, the behavior of reinforced and unreinforced T-joint specimens subjected to axial brace load with different geometry and material property has been studied. In addition, different types of shell and solid finite elements with various mesh densities are considered in this research. In order to overlap the outcomes, the numerical results of this research are present in terms of load-ovalization curves along with the results of other references. Due to mesh sizes and the element types, 144 different simulations have been performed on 12 different specimens. The results show that Code_Aster can satisfactorily predict the nonlinear static behavior of reinforced and unreinforced joints under both tension and compression load. Hence, Code_Aster can be used as a reliable tool for the evaluation and analysis and design of complex offshore joints.

In distributed systems, the occurrence of an action can give information about the occurrence of other actions. This can be an unwanted situation when 'high' actions of the system need to be kept secret, while allowing users to observe 'low' actions. If it is possible to deduce information about occurrence of high actions by observing only low actions, then the system suffers from an unwanted information flow. 'Reveals' and 'excludes' relations were introduced for modelling and analysing such an information flow among actions of a distributed system that is modelled via Petri nets. In this paper, we provide a formal basis for computing reveals and excludes relations of 1-safe free-choice Petri nets. We introduce the 'maximal-step computation tree' to represent the behaviour of a distributed system under maximal-step semantics. We define a finite prefix of the tree called 'full prefix' and we show that it is adequate for analysing information flow by means of reveals and excludes relations.

Over the past years, a wide range of dental implants has been proposed. In general, the dentists may find the best solutions according to the specific needs of the patients. A variety of factors influences the level of osseointegration and, consequently, the anchorage of the implant to the bone. The stress transfer mechanism along the bone-implant interface depends upon the surface area of the bone-implant contact. Great efforts have been devoted to the design of 3D porous lattice structures with tailored architectural features in order to reduce the implant stiffness as well as to favour bone ingrowth, thus stabilizing the device. Accordingly, the aim of the current study was to provide further insight into the design criteria for dental implants. In particular, starting from a screw implant (Implant A), different concepts of dental implants were developed: i) Implants B1–B5, with lattice shell surrounding a solid core, without thread; ii) Implant C, with lattice structure; iii) Implant D as topography optimized implant. Finite element analysis on the several models of bone-implant provided interesting information in terms of stress distributions in cortical and trabecular bone. Some differences among the implants may be ascribed to the different design criteria.

The numerical modeling of magnetic materials in simulators is a difficult task, above all in real devices with specific excitation. The aim of this work is to compare the accuracy of scalar and vector Preisach models in a well know test benchmark: the TEAM 32 problem. The availability of measured data for this benchmark test and the simple geometry allow us to build hysteresis models and to test them in a 2D finite element analysis (FEA) scheme. The specific numerical formulation of each hysteresis model implemented is described, including the technique for the numerical identification of parameters starting from measured data. The comparison among the models is done in terms of accuracy, but also in terms of easy implementation in the FEA scheme and of computational cost.

Fiber Reinforced Elastomeric Isolators (FREIs) have been proposed as an alternative to Steel Reinforced Elastomeric Isolators (SREIs) and several studies have highlighted the advantages of this technology over conventional devices. When FREIs are unbonded to the top and bottom substructure, the bearings exhibit softening under imposed lateral deformations with or without instability depending on the aspect ratio of the device. Research studies available in literature have focused on the response of rectangular bearings when loaded in shear along their base. Very little is known on the lateral response of these devices under bidirectional shear loading. This study aims to assess the response of rectangular FREIs under combined axial and bidirectional shear loads and to show the effects of (i) the secondary shape factor of the bearing, of (ii) the axial pressure, of (iii) the horizontal loading direction on the stability of these devices. As result of a large set of analyses, stability domains have been derived which take into account all of the variables listed above. Based on the results of this work, simple to use design considerations can be derived. Results of this study contribute towards the real implementation of this technology particularly in developing regions of the world.

Composite sandwich panels with honeycomb, corrugated, tetrahedral, trapezoidal, 3D periodic and hybrid lattice cores have long been studied for their use in various industrial fields. In this study, several numerical analyses were conducted in ANSYS APDL environment in order to analyze the effect of a novel bi-directional corrugated core configuration on the flexural performance of a CFRP sandwich panel. In particular, the sandwich core is obtained by repeating a regular unit cell in two different directions to form a three-dimensional lattice structure. In order to determine the optimal values of the geometrical parameters of the core unit cell and to evaluate how the layout of the composite laminate could affect the mechanical performances of the structure, a numerical study was conducted by using the Group Search Optimizer (GSO) algorithm, a metaheuristic animal-inspired optimization algorithm used to solve various real-world problems. The obtained results show that the GSO algorithm is very effective to optimize the main geometrical parameters of the composite sandwich panel with the novel bi-directional corrugated core. More generally, the implemented procedure provides an open framework to solve complex optimization problems that are very difficult to solve using exact methods, making the GSO algorithm particularly attractive for many industrial applications.

Background: The treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is today commonly treated by inserting a stent-graft by the endovascular route, without resorting to open surgery. However, some clinical cases do not allow this less invasive approach, meaning that the stent-graft cannot be inserted and open surgery is used. Methods: In the study, we propose a fluid–structure interaction (FSI) analysis of an aneurysmatic aorta that could not be treated with Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR). The vessel is reconstructed through segmentation from CT scans and subsequently modeled on CAD software to create the surface and thickness of the vessel itself. Subsequently, we proceeded to carry out Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and FSI simulation. We propose a computational study on a vessel geometry that is faithful to reality and customized. Results: Hemodynamic variable results of the carried out simulations indicate that low velocity and consequently very low WSS areas located in aneurysmal site are no longer found when conventional or patient-specific grafts are inserted. The wall stress distribution of aorta FEM analysis enabled the identification of the area at risk of failure, that is, in the posterior part of the aneurysm (∼ (Formula presented.) Pa), while FSI analysis of the patient-specific graft led to a uniform von Mises stresses distribution (∼ (Formula presented.) Pa), except for the junctions where peak stress occurred. Conclusion: The importance of this study is to highlight the benefits of the personalized stent/graft. As the authors expected, the study shows the numerous benefits of the customized stent/graft in terms of blood flow trend and wall stress compared to a traditional stent/graft by supporting the tendency to want to shift the target towards customized stents/grafts, also in the vascular surgery sector.

This work proposes a numerical methodology for the calculation of currents and voltages induced on underground pipelines by nearby overhead power lines. A previously developed quasi-3D methodology is extended, allowing the investigation of nonparallel routings of the pipelines with respect to the power lines. The proposed technique is based on a discretization of the pipeline path into several segments parallel to the power line. The section of the corridor corresponding to each pipeline segment is regarded as an electrical multi-port component, whose electrical parameters are extracted via finite element 2D analysis. Then, the obtained components are integrated into a network embodying the physical characteristics of the whole corridor. In this way, the circuital analysis is used to extend the capabilities of a standard two-dimensional field analysis. The proposed methodology is employed to simulate a pipeline running parallel to a power line for a distance of 12km. Afterwards, several nonparallel configurations – consisting of crossings between a pipeline and a power line – are assessed. The physical consequences of the crossing are discussed and a convergence study is performed to investigate the optimal pipeline subdivision procedure to be adopted for a set of different crossing angles.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-03-01 The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of shrinking and no shrinking dental filling materials combination in posterior restorations under the combined effects of polymerization shrinkage and occlusal load by means of 3D Finite Elements Analysis. Six computer-generated and restored class I or class II cavities models of a lower molar were designed in the CAD software and evaluated according to the cavity and restorative procedure. Different shrinking and no shrinking adhesive materials combination with diverse Young’s modulus were considered. A food bolus was modeled on the occlusal surface replicating the chewing load using static linear analyses Polymerization shrinkage was simulated for the shrinking different restorative materials. The maximum principal stress was selected as analysis criteria. All models exhibited higher stresses along the dentine restoration interfaces with different magnitude and a similar stress trend along enamel restoration interface. Stress values up to 22 MPa and 19 MPa were recorded in the enamel and restoration, respectively. The use of elastic not shrinking material layer in combination with bulk fill composite reduced the stress magnitude in dentine and enamel to replace dental tissues. Class I and class II posterior cavities adhesively restored with shrinking filling material’s combination showed the most unfavorable stress concentrations and the multilayer technique is a promising restorative alternative in posterior adhesive restorations when deep dentin and enamel volumes are missing. The Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) is a project of an experimental tokamak reactor developed in Italy, in the framework of the European Fusion Roadmap. This work presents the magnetic and the structural assessment of the performance of the DTT central solenoid. The CS is the core magnet of the poloidal system and generates the magnetic flux needed to induce the plasma current. This magnet is composed of a stack of six layer-wound independently energized modules, comprised of Nb3Sn Cable-in-Conduit Conductors. To optimize the amount of superconductive material, each module is divided into two submodules. The inner- most submodule operates in a range of about 8/13.5 T, while the outer one at 6/8.5 T. The objective of the design process is to obtain a coil that is capable of providing the required magnetic performance while being structurally compliant. To address this problem, an analytical assessment has been carried out and a thoroughly parametric Finite Element Model (FEM) has been implemented.

The paper is related to the assessment of collapse mechanisms of historic masonry structures suffering settlements induced by ground movements. Two numerical strategies are adopted in order to study the influence of the settled zone on the cracking of masonry buildings: a discrete rigid block model and a continuous homogenized model. The first approach provides an estimate of the collapse load and failure pattern of masonry based on the lower bound theorem of limit analysis. The second approach is formulated in the framework of multi-surface plasticity and implemented in a FE code for the path-following non-linear analysis of masonry wall described as continuous anisotropic plate. Several settlement configurations, of masonry walls under moving ground support are investigated and the corresponding failure patterns resulting from the analysis are obtained resulting in local or global failure modes. The results of the two modeling formulations are compared and discussed in order to highlight the features of the two different approaches in the prediction of settlement-induced damage.

In this paper bio-tissue, mathematical modeling serves as a central repository to interface design, simulation and tissue fabrication. Finite element computer analyses will be used to study the role of local tissue mechanics on endochondral ossification patterns, skeletal morphology and mandible thickness distributions using single and multi-phase continuum material representations of clinical cases of patients implanted with the traditional protocols. New protocols will be hypothesized for the use of the new biologically techno-structured hybrid materials.

Metastatic lesions compromise the mechanical integrity of vertebrae, increasing the fracture risk. Screw fixation is usually performed to guarantee spinal stability and prevent dramatic fracture events. Accordingly, predicting the overall mechanical response in such conditions is critical to planning and optimizing surgical treatment. This work proposes an image-based finite element computational approach describing the mechanical behavior of a patient-specific instrumented metastatic vertebra by assessing the effect of lesion size, location, type, and shape on the fracture load and fracture patterns under physiological loading conditions. A specific constitutive model for metastasis is integrated to account for the effect of the diseased tissue on the bone material properties. Computational results demonstrate that size, location, and type of metastasis significantly affect the overall vertebral mechanical response and suggest a better way to account for these parameters in estimating the fracture risk. Combining multiple osteolytic lesions to account for the irregular shape of the overall metastatic tissue does not significantly affect the vertebra fracture load. In addition, the combination of loading mode and metastasis type is shown for the first time as a critical modeling parameter in determining fracture risk. The proposed computational approach moves toward defining a clinically integrated tool to improve the management of metastatic vertebrae and quantitatively evaluate fracture risk.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) of the meniscus is a gel-like water solution of proteoglycans embedding bundles of collagen fibers mainly oriented circumferentially. Collagen fibers significantly contribute to meniscal mechanics, however little is known about their mechanical properties. The objective of this study was to propose a constitutive model for collagen fibers embedded in the ECM of the meniscus and to characterize the tissue's pertinent mechanical properties. It was hypothesized that a linear fiber reinforced viscoelastic constitutive model is suitable to describe meniscal mechanical behavior in shear. It was further hypothesized that the mechanical properties governing the model depend on the tissue's composition. Frequency sweep tests were conducted on eight porcine meniscal specimens. A first cohort of experimental data resulted from tissue specimens where collagen fibers oriented parallel with respect to the shear plane were used. This was done to eliminate the contribution of collagen fibers from the mechanical response and characterize the mechanical properties of the ECM. A second cohort with fibers orthogonally oriented with respect to the shear plane that were used to determine the elastic properties of the collagen fibers via inverse finite element analysis. Our testing protocol revealed that tissue ECM mechanical behavior could be described by a generalized Maxwell model with 3 relaxation times. The inverse finite element analysis suggested that collagen fibers can be modeled as linear elastic elements having an average elastic modulus of 287.5 ± 62.6 MPa. Magnitudes of the mechanical parameters governing the ECM and fibers were negatively related to tissue water content.

A full-arch implant-supported prosthesis 3D model was created with different distal implant angulations and cantilever arms (30° with 10-mm cantilever; 45° with 10-mm cantilever and 45° with 6-mm cantilever) and framework materials (Cobalt–chrome [CoCr alloy], Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal [Y-TZP] and polyetheretherketone [PEEK]). Each solid was imported to computer-aided engineering software, and tetrahedral elements formed the mesh. Material properties were assigned to each solid with isotropic and homogeneous behavior. The contacts were considered bonded. A vertical load of 200 N was applied in the distal region of the cantilever arm, and stress was evaluated in Von Misses (σVM) for prosthesis components and the Maximum (σMAX) and Minimum (σMIN) Principal Stresses for the bone. Distal implants angled in 45° with a 10-mm cantilever arm showed the highest stress concentration for all structures with higher stress magnitudes when the PEEK framework was considered. However, distal implants angled in 45° with a 6-mm cantilever arm showed promising mechanical responses with the lowest stress peaks. For the All-on-4 concept, a 45° distal implants angulation is only beneficial if it is possible to reduce the cantilever’s length; otherwise, the use of 30° should be considered. Comparing with PEEK, the YTZP and CoCr concentrated stress in the framework structure, reducing the stress in the prosthetic screw. Objectives of the study were to investigate biomechanical properties of severely compromised premolars restored with composite restorations using finite element analysis (FEA), and in vitro fracture resistance test. A 3-D model of an endodontically treated premolar was created in Solidworks. Different composite restorations were modelled (direct restoration-DR; endo-crown-EC; post, core, and crown-C) with two different supporting tissues: periodontal ligament/alveolar bone (B), and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Models were two-point axially loaded occlusally (850 N). Von Mises stresses and strains were calculated. The same groups were further tested for static fracture resistance in vitro (n = 5, 6.0 mm-diameter ball indenter, vertical load). Fracture resistance data were statistically analyzed (p p = 0.307). More conservative restorations seem a feasible alternative for endodontically treated premolars to conventional post-core-crown.

The present investigation evaluated the effect of the combination of different dental filling materials in Class I cavities under occlusal loading using three-dimensional finite elements analysis (FEA). Six computer-generated and restored models of a lower molar were created in the CAD software and compared according to the biomechanical response during chewing load condition. Two adhesively bonded bulk restorative materials [bulk-fill resin composite (BF) or Alkasite (Alk)] were evaluated with or without the presence of a base material below (flowable resin composite or glass ionomer cement). A food bolus was placed on the occlusal surface mimicking the compressive occlusal load (600 N) during the static linear analysis. The maximum principal stress (tensile) was calculated as stress criteria in enamel, dentin and restoration. All models showed high stresses along the enamel/restoration margin with a similar stress trend for models restored with the same upper-layer material. Stress values up to 12.04 MPa (Alk) or up to 11.12 MPa (BF) were recorded at the enamel margins. The use of flexible polymeric or ionic base material in combination with bulk-fill resin composite or Alk did not reduce the stress magnitude in dentine and enamel. Class I cavities adhesively restored with bulk-fill resin composite showed lighter stress concentration as well as Alk. Therefore, adhesively bonded Alk restoration showed a promising mechanical behavior when used with different base materials or as a bulk restoration for posterior Class I cavity.

Nominal stresses have been used for a long time for the assessment of fatigue resistance of welded joints, however, this approach has strong limitations since the definition of the nominal stress may be subjective for complex welded details and/or complex loading. On the other hand, the hot-spot stress approach has been proposed to overcome these limitations considering the structural geometrical discontinuities. However, the hot-spot stress methods also present certain limitations, and the present study aims at evaluating the available numerical and analytical hot-spot stress methods proposed by DNVGL (2016) and IIW (2014). The particular case of an offshore tubular KT joint has been considered herein and discretized in two planes. It has been studied numerically using the ABAQUS software coupled with the hot-spot stress extrapolation methods described in IIW (2014) and DNVGL (2016). The influence of the weld geometry has been considered and evaluated. In addition to the numerical method, the present study has also considered the analytical approach proposed in DNVGL (2016) derived from the combination of Efthymiou solutions for the stress concentration factor with the method of superposition of stresses. The numerical models according to IIW (2014) have been found to be more conservative when compared with the mesh-size methods proposed by DNVGL (2016), both in numerical modelling without the weld or with weld. For the numerical models with weld cord, the mean values of normalized difference index obtained for all braces together, as a result of comparing numerical results with analytical solutions, are lower, when compared with results obtained from the numerical models without weld cord.

The ‘baraccato’ system is a typical building technique for masonry structures with clever earthquake resilient features, used for the reconstruction of historical city centers in Europe and especially in the South of Italy after some seismic events occurred in the 18th–19th centuries. An atypical and very innovative ‘baraccato’ system was realized in the Ischia Island at the end of the 19th century, when it was characterized by masonry walls encaged in iron frames other than timber elements. The paper presents the results of extensive numerical analyses on the behavior of such iron-framed masonry walls, with reference to both slender and squat geometrical configurations. The analyses are mainly focused on the assessment of: a) the more appropriate modeling strategies for simulating the connection between the iron frames and the masonry walls, b) the contribution of the iron frames on the overall nonlinear behavior of the masonry walls by means of push-over analyses. To achieve these goals, two models and corresponding software are used and compared for the numerical analyses, i.e. DIANA for the finite element model (FEM) and 3DMacro for the discrete macro-element model (DMEM).

In the mid-1980s, several metaheuristic methods began to be developed for solving a very large class of computational problems with the aim of obtaining more robust and efficient procedures. Among them, many metaheuristic methods use bio-inspired intelligent algorithms. In recent years, these methods are becoming increasingly important and they can be used in various subject areas for solving complex problems. Firefly Algorithm is a nature-inspired optimization algorithm proposed by Yang to solve multimodal optimization problems. In particular, the method is inspired by the nature of fireflies to emit a light signal to attract other individuals of this species. In this work, a numerical study for solving a structural problem using the Firefly Algorithm as optimization method is conducted. In particular, the implementation of the Firefly Algorithm in several input files realized in the ANSYS Parametric Design Language has allowed the definition of the optimal stacking sequence and the laminate thickness of a composite gear housing used to enclose the components of a mechanical reducer.

Since the beginning of their production, pneumatic tires have experienced tremendous improvements in structure and materials, becoming the dominant design in the world tires market. Nevertheless, relying upon pressurized air, they are affected by maintenance and security issues that can lead to fatal accidents. Therefore, tire-makers are investigating new tire designs, called Airless or Non-Pneumatic, with the aim of removing air-related problems. The research about such tires is still at an early stage, especially if compared to the one conducted on the pneumatic ones. In this paper, the development of a methodology capable of studying the mechanical behavior of a Non-Pneumatic Tire (NPT) by means of experimental data and numerical approach is illustrated. The experimental activities consisted of a scanner acquisition of the NPT and a footprint analysis for the calculation of the radial stiffness and contact patch pressure distribution. Moreover, the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique was applied to carry out a more specific study about the spoke’s deformation. From the acquired 3D model, a calculation of the NPT vertical deflection with finite element analysis (FEA) was performed—validating the model and then submitting it to a steady state analysis—that allows the simulation of a steady state rolling tire with the possibility to replicate different values of slip ratio. The results of the experimental activities are in good agreement with the ones obtained with FEA, further validating the developed methodology.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-11-01 Evidence regarding the effect of the onlay preparation design for different CAD/CAM restorative materials considering the preservation of cusps is lacking. Molars were 3D-modeled in four preparation designs for onlay restoration: Traditional design with functional cusp coverage (TFC), non-retentive design with functional cusp coverage (NFC), traditional design with non-functional cusp coverage (TNFC) and non-retentive design with non-functional cusp coverage (NNFC). The restorations were simulated with two CAD/CAM restorative materials: LD—lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD) and RC—resin composite (GrandioBloc). A 100 N axial load was applied to the occlusal surface, simulating the centric contact point. Von Mises (VM) and maximum principal (Pmax) stress were evaluated for restorations, cement layer and dental substrate. The non-retentive preparation design reduced the stress concentration in the tooth structure in comparison to the conventional retentive design. For LD onlays, the stress distribution on the restoration intaglio surface showed that the preparation design, as well as the prepared cusp, influenced the stress magnitude. The non-retentive preparation design provided better load distribution in both restorative materials and more advantageous for molar structure. The resin composite restoration on thenon-functional cusp is recommended when the functional cusp is preserved in order to associate conservative dentistry and low-stress magnitude. A faulty dynamical interaction between a machine and a foundation can lead to unexpected and dangerous failures, impacting human lives and the environment. Some machines, as reciprocating compressors, have a low rotation speed, this can lead to dangerous frequency for the foundation blocks. For this reason, a careful analysis shall be done during the design phase to avoid the range of the frequency of resonances and low vibration speeds. Designers can approach this problem by relying both on Analytical Theory and Finite Element Analysis. This article compares these methods by studying the dynamical response of different foundation geometries in a case study of a reciprocating compressor foundation. The applicability limits of Analytical theory are explored and an evaluation of the difference in the estimation of natural frequencies of the system using Analytical Theory and Finite Elements Analysis are made for different foundation geometries. The comparison shows similar results until the foundation geometry is rigid, reference geometries limits are provided so that designers can choose which of the methods better suits their type of analysis.

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of three different dental implant neck geometries, under a combined compressive/shear load using finite element analysis (FEA). The implant neck was positioned in D2 quality bone at the crestal level or 2 mm below.MethodsOne dental implant (4.2 × 9 mm) was digitized by reverse engineering techniques using micro CT and imported into Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Non-uniform rational B-spline surfaces were reconstructed, generating a 3D volumetric model similar to the digitized implant. Three different models were generated with different implant neck configurations, namely 0°, 10° and 20°. D2 quality bone, composed of cortical and trabecular structure, was modeled using data from CT scans. The implants were included in the bone model using a Boolean operation. Two different fixture insertion depths were simulated for each implant: 2 mm below the crestal bone and exactly at the level of the crestal bone. The obtained models were imported to FEA software in STEP format. Von Mises equivalent strains were analyzed for the peri-implant D2 bone type, considering the magnitude and volume of the affected surrounding cortical and trabecular bone. The highest strain values in both cortical and trabecular tissue at the peri-implant bone interface were extracted and compared.ResultsAll implant models were able to distribute the load at the bone-implant contact (BIC) with a similar strain pattern between the models. At the cervical region, however, differences were observed: the models with 10° and 20° implant neck configurations (Model B and C), showed a lower strain magnitude when compared to the straight neck (Model A). These values were significantly lower when the implants were situated at crestal bone levels. In the apical area, no differences in strain values were observed.SignificanceThe implant neck configuration influenced the strain distribution and magnitude in the cortical bone and cancellous bone tissues. To reduce the strain values and improve the load dissipation in the bone tissue, implants with 10° and 20 neck configuration should be preferred instead of straight implant platforms.

Experimental characterization of Lamb waves in plate–like structures overcomes the intrinsic limits of a–priori Semi–Analytical Finite Elements simulations, where material inaccuracies and non–idealities can not be easily considered. Unfortunately, the experimental extraction of guided waves dispersion curves, and especially their polar representation along different directions of propagation at a given frequency, is not trivial. In non-isotropic materials, such analysis is a key aspect for a reliable and robust characterization of the waves behaviour. In this work, by exploiting Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer measurements with narrowband excitation, two different signal processing methods for the extraction of the wavenumber polar representation at the excitation frequency are investigated and characterized. The first method is based on a Distance Regularized Level Set algorithm, widely used in image processing and computer vision but, to the best of author’s knowledge, never used in the Lamb waves’ field. The second method is based on the two-dimensional sparse wavenumber analysis which exploits the wavefield sparse representation in the wavenumber domain. With a precise and reliable extraction of the wavenumber characteristic in the k–space, the polar representations at the excitation frequency of phase and group velocities can be estimated. The former, by exploiting the well-known wavenumber–frequency relation, the latter, instead, by computing numerical derivative among wavenumbers at multiple frequencies. The methodology has been validated on three different composite plates with different degrees of non-isotropy properties. The results show the effectiveness of the two methods, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of both.

The analytical prediction of the effectiveness of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) in the confinement of a rectangular reinforced concrete (RC) column with a high aspect ratio (wall-like) still has an uncertain solution. In this paper, a numerical investigation of the axial response of RC wall-like columns strengthened with FRP systems was developed. Analytical solutions proposed in the literature for the assessment of the axial load capacity were presented and compared with each other and with the available experimental results. Moreover, non-linear finite element analysis was carried out, and the results were discussed, providing a simple model for the assessment of the axial compressive strength of wall-like RC columns strengthened with FRP.

In this paper, a strategy for reducing the electromagnetic interferences induced by power lines on metallic pipelines is proposed and numerically investigated. The study considers a set of steel conductors interposed between the power line and the pipeline. Different shapes of conductor cross sections and different magnetic permeabilities are considered, to identify the solution exhibiting the greatest mitigation efficiency for the same amount of material. The investigation is carried out by means of a quasi-3D finite element analysis. Results show that the main mechanism responsible for the mitigation is constituted by the currents induced in the screening conductors by the power line. Hence, a high magnetic permeability can have a detrimental effect since it reduces the skin depth to values below the size of the screening conductor. In this case, a reduction of the screening current and in the mitigation efficiency is observed. Nevertheless, the study shows that the use of strip-shaped screening conductors allows the employment of cheaper magnetic materials without compromising the mitigation efficacy of the screening conductors.

As part of an ongoing divertor upgrade of the TCV tokamak it is planned to add gas baffles to form a divertor chamber of variable closure. The baffles promise to increase the compression of neutral particles in the divertor and, thereby, extend the research on the TCV divertor towards more reactor relevant, highly dissipative divertor regimes. It is foreseen to construct the baffles entirely of polycrystalline graphite that was used for the existing TCV protection tiles. The thermal considerations of the baffle design are based on the heat loads expected during normal operation, where even an extremely large increase in the power carrying plasma channel towards the baffle over the entire 2 seconds duration of a TCV discharge gives no cause for concern. An electromagnetic analysis considers halo currents flowing through the baffles, which can occur during disruptions, as a worst-case scenario. It is found that a halo current of 250 kA results in an average vertical force in the baffles of up to 950 kN/m3. The fixture of the baffle tiles to the vacuum vessel is designed for a maximum tensile stress of 31 MPa and maximum compressive stress of 60 MPa that remains a factor of two below their respective material limits. The obtained results of the thermal, electromagnetic and structural analysis thus validate the proposed baffle design.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-03-02 The aim of the present investigation was to calculate the stress distribution generated in the root dentine canal during mechanical rotation of five different NiTi endodontic instruments by means of a finite element analysis (FEA). Two conventional alloy NiTi instruments F360 25/04 and F6 Skytaper 25/06, in comparison to three heat treated alloys NiTI Hyflex CM 25/04, Protaper Next 25/06 and One Curve 25/06 were considered and analyzed. The instruments’ flexibility (reaction force) and geometrical features (cross section, conicity) were previously investigated. For each instrument, dentine root canals with two different elastic moduli(18 and 42 GPa) were simulated with defined apical ratios. Ten different CAD instrument models were created and their mechanical behaviors were analyzed by a 3D-FEA. Static structural analyses were performed with a non-failure condition, since a linear elastic behavior was assumed for all components. All the instruments generated a stress area concentration in correspondence to the root canal curvature at approx. 7 mm from the apex. The maximum values were found when instruments were analyzed in the highest elastic modulus dentine canal. Strain and von Mises stress patterns showed a higher concentration in the first part of curved radius of all the instruments. Conventional Ni-Ti endodontic instruments demonstrated higher stress magnitudes, regardless of the conicity of 4% and 6%, and they showed the highest von Mises stress values in sound, as well as in mineralized dentine canals. Heat-treated endodontic instruments with higher flexibility values showed a reduced stress concentration map. Hyflex CM 25/04 displayed the lowest von Mises stress values of, respectively, 35.73 and 44.30 GPa for sound and mineralized dentine. The mechanical behavior of all rotary endodontic instruments was influenced by the different elastic moduli and by the dentine canal rigidity. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-03-01 Background: This study evaluated the effect of interim restorative materials (acrylic resin (AR), resin composite (RC) or polyetheretherketone (PEEK) for dental computer-aided design/computeraided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)) on the stress distribution of a posterior three-unit fixed partial denture. Methods: The abutment teeth (first molar and first premolar) were modeled using the BioCAD protocol containing 1.5 mm of axial reduction and converging axial walls. A static structural analysis was performed in the computer-aided engineering software, and the Maximum Principal Stress criterion was used to analyze the prosthesis and the cement layers of both abutment teeth. The materials were considered isotropic, linearly elastic, homogeneous and with bonded contacts. An axial load (600 N) was applied to the occlusal surface of the second premolar. Results: Regardless of the restorative material, the region of the prosthetic connectors showed the highest tensile stress magnitude. The highest stress peak was observed with the use of RC (129 MPa) compared to PEEK and AR. For the cement layers, RC showed the lowest values in the occlusal region (7 MPa) and the highest values for the cervical margin (14 MPa) compared to PEEK (21 and 12 MPa) and AR (21 and 13 MPa). Conclusions: Different interim restorative materials for posterior fixed partial dentures present different biomechanical behavior. The use of resin composite can attenuate the stress magnitude on the cement layer, and the use of acrylic resin can attenuate the stress magnitude on the connector region. Osteoporosis affects an increasing number of people every year and patient specific finite element analysis of the femur has been proposed to identify patients that could benefit from preventative treatment. The aim of this study was to demonstrate, verify, and validate an objective process for selecting tissues for use as the basis of phantomless calibration to enable patient specific finite element analysis derived hip fracture risk prediction. Retrospective reanalysis of patient computed tomography (CT) scans has the potential to yield insights into more accurate prediction of osteoporotic fracture. Bone mineral density (BMD) specific calibration scans are not typically captured during routine clinical practice. Tissue-based BMD calibration can therefore empower the retrospective study of patient CT scans captured during routine clinical practice. Together the method for selecting tissues as the basis for phantomless calibration coupled with the post-processing steps for deriving a calibration equation using the selected tissues provide an estimation of quantitative equivalent density results derived using calibration phantoms. Patient tissues from a retrospective cohort of 211 patients were evaluated. The best phantomless calibration resulted in a femoral strength (FS) [N] bias of 0.069 ± 0.07% over FS derived from inline calibration and a BMD [kg/cm3] bias of 0.038 ± 0.037% over BMD derived from inline calibration. The phantomless calibration slope for the best method presented was within the range of patient specific calibration curves available for comparison and demonstrated a small bias of 0.028 ± 0.054 HU/(mg/cm3), assuming the Mindways Model 3 BMD inline calibration phantom as the gold standard. The presented method of estimating a calibration equation from tissues showed promise for CT-based femoral fracture analyses of retrospective cohorts without readily available calibration data.

Purpose Inverse problems in electromagnetism, namely, the recovery of sources (currents or charges) or system data from measured effects, are usually ill-posed or, in the numerical formulation, ill-conditioned and require suitable regularization to provide meaningful results. To test new regularization methods, there is the need of benchmark problems, which numerical properties and solutions should be well known. Hence, this study aims to define a benchmark problem, suitable to test new regularization approaches and solves with different methods. Design/methodology/approach To assess reliability and performance of different solving strategies for inverse source problems, a benchmark problem of current synthesis is defined and solved by means of several regularization methods in a comparative way; subsequently, an approach in terms of an artificial neural network (ANN) is considered as a viable alternative to classical regularization schemes. The solution of the underlying forward problem is based on a finite element analysis. Findings The paper provides a very detailed analysis of the proposed inverse problem in terms of numerical properties of the lead field matrix. The solutions found by different regularization approaches and an ANN method are provided, showing the performance of the applied methods and the numerical issues of the benchmark problem. Originality/value The value of the paper is to provide the numerical characteristics and issues of the proposed benchmark problem in a comprehensive way, by means of a wide variety of regularization methods and an ANN approach.

Unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings are one of the most common constructions in developing countries and are usually constructed based on traditional knowledge without engineering intervention. Due to poor seismic performance of URM buildings, the development of seismic protection systems can play a key role in the mitigation of losses in future earthquakes. Despite the availability of different interventions for seismic strengthening of URM buildings, the quest for a cost-effective technique still exits. On the basis of recent outcomes by these authors, this study presents the design of low-cost base isolation systems for a class of URM buildings deemed representative of the building stock of developing countries. The proposed base-isolation system is made by recycled-rubber fibre-reinforced elastomeric isolators (RR-FREIs). Building classes were defined by properly selecting those parameters which are expected to mostly affect the seismic behaviour of the building such as number of storeys, masonry type and in-plan irregularity. Three-dimensional numerical models of URM buildings were developed in SAP2000 using nonlinear layered shell elements and bilinear models for RR-FREIs. Nonlinear time history analyses were carried out for a set of ground motion records to investigate the performance of both fixed-base (FB) and base-isolated (BI) configurations of URM buildings. The comparison of results shows a significant reduction of inter-storey drift ratios for BI configuration, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of RR-FREIs.

This study evaluated the effect of the combination of three different onlay preparation designs and two restorative materials on the stress distribution, using 3D-finite element analysis. Six models of first lower molars were created according to three preparation designs: non-retentive (nRET), traditional with occlusal isthmus reduction (IST), and traditional without occlusal isthmus reduction (wIST), and according to two restorative materials: lithium-disilicate (LD) and nanoceramic resin (NR). A 600 N axial load was applied at the central fossa. All solids were considered isotropic, homogeneous, and linearly elastic. A static linear analysis was performed, and the Maximum Principal Stress (MPS) criteria were used to evaluate the results and compare the stress in MPa on the restoration, cement layer, and tooth structure (enamel and dentin). A novel statistical approach was used for quantitative analysis of the finite element analysis results. On restoration and cement layer, nRET showed a more homogeneous stress distribution, while the highest stress peaks were calculated for LD onlays (restoration: 69–110, cement layer: 10.2–13.3). On the tooth structure, the material had more influence, with better results for LD (27–38). It can be concluded that nRET design showed the best mechanical behavior compared to IST and wIST, with LD being more advantageous for tooth structure and NR for the restoration and cement layer.

Predictive models play an important role for increasing the reliability of composite structures over time, but a great deal of experimental data is requested. In this paper, results from creep experiments on uniaxial E-glass fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) single ply laminates, performed at different stress levels, are presented. The tests duration was of 42 months. Analytical modeling of the viscous behavior of the tested GFRP composite, under linear and nonlinear viscoelastic hypotheses, is reported. A discussion on the comparison of creep strain response by Burgers model, with parameters obtained from fitting of data for different test duration, is also proposed. Finally, predictive finite element method (FEM) simulations were carried out for discussing the deferred behavior induced by creep, for composite layers used for repair purposes in hydrogen transportation pipes. Numerical results highlighted a non-negligible difference in creep strain values, pointing out that a model based on experimental tests with shorter duration leads to a conservative composite design.

The increase of railway track occupancy due to high speed trains introduction in the morning and cross-border transportation of hazardous and non-hazardous materials during late hours, require particular attention for the fatigue design as well as the maintenance planning of railway superstructures. For this purpose, strategies finalized to increase the fatigue strength of railway structural parts assume great interest for railway engineers. Cold expansion technique, for example, is less expensive than other mechanical and thermal treatments, but in the literature there are no data concerning its use in the railway field, being almost all available studies focused on aluminum parts. In this paper, fatigue crack growth response of drilled specimens extracted from rails submitted or not to cold expansion are presented. Two degree of cold-expansion, 2% and 4%, are investigated in terms of fatigue crack growth rate, and the results compared to those obtained with not-expanded specimens. It is found that cold expansion postpones fatigue crack initiation, and that this effect is more pronounced for increasing degree of cold expansion. A preliminary predictive model was developed, based on the sum of the Stress Intensity Factors calculated with the weight functions and concerning the residual stress field induced by cold expansion, and the one generated by the external loads.

Large medium-voltage electric machine stators are usually equipped with form wound coils made of flat conductors (strands) and embedded in open (rectangular) slots. Air-gap magnetic flux lines can enter the slot and, sweeping the strands placed nearest the slot opening, induce eddy currents in them. Such eddy currents cause additional losses which can be much higher than usual skin-effect and proximity losses. In order to avoid dangerous overheating and hot spots, the additional losses in question need to be carefully predicted in the design stage. Time-stepping finite-element analysis (TSFEA) can be used for the purpose, which however implies a large computational burden and requires the machine geometry to be modeled in detail. This article proposes alternative methods based on time-harmonic finite-element analysis (THFEA) simulations performed on highly simplified machine models and with no need to take rotor motion into account. The proposed methods are shown to produce very accurate results, compared to TSFEA, but with very significant time and computational savings.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 This study evaluated the stress distribution in five different class II cavities of premolar models restored with conventional or bulk-fill flowable composite by means of finite element analysis (FEA) under shrinkage and occlusal loading. An upper validated premolar model was imported in the software, and five class II cavities with different occlusal extensions and dimensions were prepared: horizontal cavity on the mesial surface (horizontal slot), mesio-occlusal cavity, mesial cavity (vertical slot), tunnel type cavity and direct access cavity. The models were restored with conventional or bulk-fill flowable resin composite. The tested materials were considered as homogeneous, linear, and isotropic. The Maximum Principal Stress criteria was chosen to evaluate the tensile stress results. The lowest shrinkage stress value was observed in the direct access cavity restored with bulk-fill flowable resin composite (36.12 MPa). The same cavity, restored with conventional composite showed a score of 36.14 MPa. The horizontal slot cavity with bulk-fill flowable showed a score of 46.71 MPa. The mesio-occlusal cavity with bulk-fill flowable had a score of 53.10 MPa, while with conventional composite this was 55.35 MPa. Higher shrinkage stress was found in the vertical slot cavity with conventional resin 56.14 MPa, followed by the same cavity with bulk-fill flowable 56.08 MPa. Results indicated that the use of bulk-fill flowable composite resin more significantly decreased the polymerization shrinkage stress magnitude. The larger the cavity and the volume of material necessary to restore the tooth, the greater the residual stress on enamel and dentin tissue. Thin perforated Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSWs) are among the most common types of seismic energy dissipation systems to protect the main boundary components of SPSWs from fatal fractures in the high risk zones. In this paper, the cyclic behavior of the different circular hole patterns under cyclic loading is reported. Based on the experimental results, it can be concluded that a change in the perforation pattern of the circular holes leads to a change in the locations of the fracture tendency over the web plate, especially at the plate frame interactions. Accordingly, the cyclic responses of the tested specimens were simulated by finite element method using the ABAQUS package. Likewise, perforated shear panels with a new perforation pattern obtained by implementing Topology Optimization (TO) were proposed. It was found that the ultimate shear strength of the specimen with the proposed TO perforation pattern was higher than that of the other specimens. In addition, theoretical equations using the Plate Frame Interaction (PFI) method were used to predict the shear strength and initial stiffness of the considered specimens. The theoretical results showed that the proposed reduced coefficients relationships cannot accurately predict the shear strength and initial stiffness of the considered perforated shear panels. Therefore, the reduced coefficients should be adopted in the theoretical equations based on the obtained experimental and numerical results. Finally, with the results of this study, the shear strength and initial stiffness of these types of perforated shear panels can be predicted by PFI method.

International audience; The purpose of this work is to devise algorithms to reduce the memory consumption of the vector Preisach model in view of its usage in Finite Element analysis. Four algorithms, which all implement a vector Preisach hysteresis model, are presented and critically compared theoretically and by numerical experiments taken on with two materials and three signals. Several strategies are presented to reduce both the memory occupation and the computational cost of several orders of magnitude.

Context Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with impaired bone quality and increased fracture risk. Reliable tools for the evaluation of bone quality parameters are not yet clinically available. Bone Strain Index (BSI) is a new metric for bone strength based on Finite Element Analysis from lumbar spine and femoral neck dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) images. Objective To assess the lumbar spine (LS), femoral neck (FN), and total hip (TH) BSI in PHPT patients compared with controls and to investigate the association of BSI with vertebral fractures (VFs) in PHPT. Methods This case-control study enrolled 50 PHPT patients and 100 age- and sex-matched control subjects from an outpatient clinic. The main outcome measures were LS-BSI, FN-BSI, and TH-BSI. Results FN bone mineral density (BMD) and one-third distal radius BMD were lower in the PHPT group than in controls (FN 0.633 ± 0.112 vs 0.666 ± 0.081, P = 0.042; radius 0.566 ± 0.07 vs 0.625 ± 0.06, P < 0.001). PHPT group has significant lower TBS score compared with controls (1.24 ± 0.09 vs 1.30 ± 0.10, P < 0.001). BSI was significantly higher at LS (2.28 ± 0.59 vs 2.02 ± 0.43, P = 0.009), FN (1.72 ± 0.41 vs 1.49 ± 0.35, P = 0.001), and TH (1.51 ± 0.33 vs 1.36 ± 0.25, P = 0.002) in PHPT. LS-BSI showed moderate accuracy for discriminating VFs (AUC 0.667; 95% CI, 0.513-0.820). LS-BSI ≥ 2.2 and was a statistically significant independent predictor of VFs, with an adjusted odds ratio ranging from 5.7 to 15.1. Conclusion BSI, a DXA-derived bone quality index, is impaired in PHPT and may help to identify PHPT subjects at high risk of fractures.

In this study, we report the fabrication of two different three-dimensional (3D) architectures of regenerated silk (RS) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) with embedded functionalities. 3D printed cylinders with an internal layer of PHBV and an external of calcium ions (Ca++) or potassium nitrate (KNO3) modified RS were designed to control the radial shrinkage, water uptake and compression strength. Such cylinders were then used as sutureless thermoresponsive clips, measuring the bursting resistance once applied on an anastomized porcine intestine. Experimental data are supported by finite element simulations that model the tube contraction, demonstrating the possibility to program the shape-changing behavior of 3D printed structures. Printing RS on PHBV, we obtained responsive 3D grids to external force with self-powering properties. The synergic effect obtained by combining materials on appropriate architectures paves the way to potential clinical applications ranging from monitoring of vital signs to sutureless sealant patches.

Fiber-reinforced elastomeric isolators (FREIs) are elastomeric devices which have been introduced as a low-cost alternative to the well-known steel-reinforced elastomeric isolators (SREIs). As common in rubber-based devices, the application of FREIs to lightweight structures is challenging: when the mass is limited, the resulting slender bearings tend to become unstable under large horizontal displacements. On the basis of numerical and experimental findings, this research work aims to demonstrate a simple to implement and low-cost approach to extend the application of FREIs to lightweight structures. The technique here discussed allows (i) to reduce the horizontal stiffness of FREIs, (ii) to increase the stability range of the bearings, and (iii) to obtain a desired hardening response for large lateral deformations, with no instability.
