Using the ARTEMIS set of 45 high-resolution cosmological simulations, we investigate a range of merger-induced dynamical transformations of Milky Way-like galaxies. We first identify populations of accreted stars on highly radial orbits, similar to the 'Gaia Sausage' in the Milky Way. We show that $\approx1/3$ of the ARTEMIS galaxies contain a similar feature, and confirm that they usually comprise stellar debris from the most massive accreted satellite. Selecting 15 galaxies with discs at the present-day, we study their changes around the times of the GS-like mergers. Dark matter haloes of many of these exhibit global changes in shape and orientation, with almost half becoming significantly more spherical when the mergers occur. Focusing on the galaxies themselves, we find that 4/15 have stellar discs which experience large changes in the orientation of their angular momentum (AM) axes, at rates of up to $\sim60$ degrees Gyr$^{-1}$. By calculating the orbital angular momentum axes of the satellites before they are accreted, we show that there is a tendency for the disc's AM to become more aligned with this axis after the merger. We also investigate the origin of in situ retrograde stars, analogous to the 'Splash' in the Milky Way. Tracing them back to earlier snapshots, we demonstrate that they were often disrupted onto their extreme orbits by multiple early mergers. Relying on the dramatic increase in the number of stars with full 6D phase-space information provided by the Gaia Data Release 3, we discover unambiguous signatures of phase-mixing in the stellar halo around the Sun. We show that for the stars likely belonging to the last massive merger, the (v_r,r) distribution contains a series of long and thin chevron-like overdensities. These phase-space sub-structures are predicted to emerge following the dissolution of a satellite, when its tidal debris is given time to wind up, thin out and fold. Additionally, the observed energy and angular momentum (E, L_z) distribution appears more prograde at high energies, possibly revealing the original orbital angular momentum of the in-falling galaxy. The energy distribution of the debris is strongly asymmetric with a peak at low E -- which, we surmise, may be evidence of the dwarf's rapid sinking -- and riddled with wrinkles and bumps. If these small-scale energy inhomogeneities have been seeded during or immediately after the interaction with the Milky Way, and are not due to the spatial restriction of our study, then making use of the (v_r,r) chevrons to constrain the time of the merger becomes cumbersome. Nonetheless, we demonstrate that similar phase-space and (E,L_z) sub-structures are present in numerical simulations of galaxy interactions, both in bespoke N-body runs and in cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in suites. The remnant traces of the progenitor's disruption and the signatures of the on-going phase-mixing discovered here will not only help to constrain the properties of our Galaxy's most important interaction, but also can be used as a novel tool to map out the Milky Way's current gravitational potential and its perturbations., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, submitted to MNRAS. Since the advent of $Gaia$ astrometry, it is possible to identify massive accreted systems within the Galaxy through their unique dynamical signatures. One such system, $Gaia$-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE), appears to be an early "building block" given its virial mass $> 10^{10}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ at infall ($z\sim1-3$). In order to separate the progenitor population from the background stars, we investigate its chemical properties with up to 30 element abundances from the GALAH+ Survey Data Release 3 (DR3). To inform our choice of elements for purely chemically selecting accreted stars, we analyse 4164 stars with low-$��$ abundances and halo kinematics. These are most different to the Milky Way stars for abundances of Mg, Si, Na, Al, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Cu. Based on the significance of abundance differences and detection rates, we apply Gaussian mixture models to various element abundance combinations. We find the most populated and least contaminated component, which we confirm to represent GSE, contains 1049 stars selected via [Na/Fe] vs. [Mg/Mn] in GALAH+ DR3. We provide tables of our selections and report the chrono-chemodynamical properties (age, chemistry, and dynamics). Through a previously reported clean dynamical selection of GSE stars, including $30 < \sqrt{J_R~/~\mathrm{kpc\,km\,s^{-1}}} < 55$, we can characterise an unprecedented 24 abundances of this structure with GALAH+ DR3. Our chemical selection allows us to prevent circular reasoning and characterise the dynamical properties of the GSE, for example mean $\sqrt{J_R~/~\mathrm{kpc\,km\,s^{-1}}} = 26_{-14}^{+9}$. We find only $(29\pm1)\%$ of the GSE stars within the clean dynamical selection region. Using data from the GALAH survey, we explore the dependence of elemental abundances on stellar age and metallicity among Galactic disc stars. We find that the abundance of most elements can be predicted from age and [Fe/H] with an intrinsic scatter of about 0.03 dex. We discuss the possible causes for the existence of the abundance-age-metallicity relations. Using a stochastic chemical enrichment scheme based on the size of Supernovae remnants, we show the intrinsic scatter is expected to be small, about 0.05 dex or even smaller if there is additional mixing in the ISM. Elemental abundances show trends with both age and metallicity and the relationship is well described by a simple model in which the dependence of abundance ([X/Fe]) on age and [Fe/H] are additively separable. Elements can be grouped based on the direction of their abundance gradient in the (age,[Fe/H]) plane and different groups can be roughly associated with three distinct nucleosynthetic production sites, the exploding massive stars, the exploding white dwarfs and the AGB stars. However, the abundances of some elements, like Co, La, and Li, show large scatter for a given age and metallicity, suggesting processes other than simple Galactic chemical evolution are at play. We also compare the abundance trends of main-sequence turn-off stars against that of giants, whose ages were estimated using asteroseismic information from the K2 mission. For most elements, the trends of main-sequence turn-off stars are similar to that of giants. The existence of abundance relations implies that we can estimate the age and birth radius of disc stars, which is important for studying the dynamic and chemical evolution of the Galaxy., Comment: 21 pages, 11 Figures

In recent years, Galactic archaeology has become a particularly vibrant field of astronomy, with its main focus set on the oldest stars of our Galaxy. In most cases, these stars have been identified as the most metal-poor. However, the struggle to find these ancient fossils has produced an important bias in the observations - in particular, the intermediate metal-poor stars (-2.5, 21 pages, 23 figures, online material. We extend our previous work on the age-chemical abundance structure of the Galactic outer disc to the inner disc (4 < r < 8 kpc) based on the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Different from the outer disc, the inner disc stars exhibit a clear bimodal distribution in the [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane. While a number of scenarios have been proposed in the literature, it remains challenging to recover this bimodal distribution with theoretical models. To this end, we present a chemical evolution model embedding a complex multi-phase inner disc formation scenario that matches the observed bimodal [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] distribution. In this scenario, the formation of the inner disc is dominated by two main starburst episodes 6 Gyr apart with secular, low-level star formation activity in between. In our model, the first starburst occurs at early cosmic times (t~1 Gyr) and the second one 6 Gyr later at a cosmic time of t~7 Gyr. Both these starburst episodes are associated with gas accretion events in our model, and are quenched rapidly. The first starburst leads to the formation of the high-$\alpha$ sequence, and the second starburst leads to the formation of the metal-poor low-$\alpha$ sequence. The metal-rich low-$\alpha$ stars, instead, form during the secular evolution phase between the two bursts. Our model shows that the $\alpha$-dichotomy originates from the rapid suppression of star formation after the first starburst. The two starburst episodes are likely to be responsible for the formation of the geometric thick disc (z >1 kpc), with the old inner thick disc and the young outer thick disc forming during the first and the second starbursts, respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. We combined these new observations with all relevant IRAC archival data of these fields in order to produce the deepest possible mosaics of these regions. In total, these observations represent nearly 11 % of the total Spitzer Space Telescope mission time. The resulting mosaics cover a total of approximately 71.5 deg2 in the 3.6 and 4.5 μm bands, and approximately 21.8 deg2 in the 5.8 and 8 μm bands. They reach at least 24 AB magnitude (measured to 5σ, in a 2″​​.5 aperture) in the 3.6 μm band and up to ∼5 mag deeper in the deepest regions. The astrometry is tied to the Gaia astrometric reference system, and the typical astrometric uncertainty for sources with 16 "< "[3.6]< 19 is ≲ 0″​​.15. The photometric calibration is in excellent agreement with previous WISE measurements. We extracted source number counts from the 3.6 μm band mosaics, and they are in excellent agreement with previous measurements. Given that the Spitzer Space Telescope has now been decommissioned, these mosaics are likely to be the definitive reduction of these IRAC data. This survey therefore represents an essential first step in assembling multi-wavelength data on the Euclid deep fields, which are set to become some of the premier fields for extragalactic astronomy in the 2020s

We report the discovery of a compact group of galaxies, CGG-z5, at z~5.2 in the EGS field covered by the JWST/CEERS survey. CGG-z5 was selected as the highest overdensity of galaxies at z>2 in recent JWST public surveys and it consists of six candidate members lying within a projected area of $1.5''\times3''$ (10$\times$20~kpc$^2$). All group members are HST/F435W and HST/F606W dropouts while securely detected in the JWST/NIRCam bands, yielding a narrow range of robust photometric redshifts $5.011$) at z~1. This implies that CGG-z5 could be a "proto-massive galaxy" captured during a short-lived phase of massive galaxy formation., Comment: A&A Letter in press

K2 was a community-driven NASA mission where all targets were proposed through guest observer programs. Among those, the K2 Galactic Archaeology Program (K2GAP) was devoted to measuring asteroseismic signals from giant stars to inform studies of the Galaxy, with about 25% of the observed K2 targets being allocated to this program. Here, we provide an overview of this program. We discuss in detail the target selection procedure and provide a python code that implements the selection function, see https://github.com/sanjibs/k2gap . Additionally, we discuss the detection completeness of the asteroseismic parameters $\nu_{\rm max}$ and $\Delta \nu$. Broadly speaking, the targets were selected based on 2MASS color $J-Ks > 0.5$, with finely tuned adjustments for each campaign. Making use of the selection function we compare the observed distribution of asteroseismic masses to theoretical predictions. The median asteroseismic mass is higher by about 4% compared to predictions. Additionally, the number of seismic detections is on average 14% lower than expected. Galactic Archaeology is the study of the formation and evolution of the Milky Way through the properties of stars and stellar populations. The combination of stellar ages, chemical compositions, positions, and velocities can reveal the history of star formation and chemical enrichment in different regions of the Galaxy. A large number of stellar spectroscopic, photometric, and astrometric surveys are currently providing the data necessary to determine the properties of millions of stars spanning almost the entire distance from the Galactic centre to its outskirts. These data do not give stellar ages directly, but ages can be estimated by comparing the surface properties of the stars with models of stellar evolution.This thesis covers the work presented in five papers concerning stellar ages for studies of Galactic Archaeology. In Paper I, we investigate the ages of the Gaia benchmark stars, a sample of 33 nearby stars used as a validation sample in large surveys. By combining new age estimates from model fitting with age estimates found in the literature, we define benchmark ages for 16 of the stars. In Paper III we present a new method for estimating the sample age-metallicity distribution (SAMD) of a population of stars. This method combines the full age-metallicity probability density functions from model fitting of individual stars and is found to yield more precise age distributions than the distribution of individual age estimates.The remaining papers are devoted to the study of the formation history of stellar populations in the Milky Way disc and halo. In Paper II we study the properties of two stellar populations in the halo and find that they formed at the same time more than 10 Gyr ago, but at significantly different metallicities. This is consistent with the prevailing interpretation that the most metal-poor population has been accreted from a dwarf galaxy and that the other population is made up of kinematically hot Milky Way disc stars. In Paper IV we revisit the age distribution of the accreted component and find it to be consistent with a single population of stars with ages in the range 10 to 12 Gyr. We also investigate the properties of a population of stars on retrograde orbits claimed to be accreted from another distinct dwarf galaxy. This population seems to be of a mixed origin as indicated, for example, by a multimodal age distribution. Finally, in Paper V we calculate the SAMD for a sample of almost 200 000 stars in the Milky Way disc. The SAMD shows two local minima, at ages of approximately 5 and 10 Gyr, indicating that the disc stars formed in three main phases. First along a single chemical evolution track in the inner disc until around 10 Gyr ago, then across the disc with outwardly decreasing metallicity, and finally in a burst of star formation 2 to 4 Gyr ago.

We present a detailed analysis of the Galaxy structure using an unWISE wide-field image at $3.4\mu$m. We perform a 3D photometric decomposition of the Milky Way taking into account i) the projection of the Galaxy on the celestial sphere and ii) that the observer is located within the Galaxy at the solar radius. We consider a large set of photometric models starting with a pure disc model and ending with a complex model which consists of thin and thick discs plus a boxy-peanut-shaped bulge. In our final model, we incorporate many observed features of the Milky Way, such as the disc flaring and warping, several over-densities in the plane, and the dust extinction. The model of the bulge with the corresponding X-shape structure is obtained from N-body simulations of a Milky Way-like galaxy. This allows us to retrieve the parameters of the aforementioned stellar components, estimate their contribution to the total Galaxy luminosity, and constrain the position angle of the bar. The mass of the thick disc in our models is estimated to be 0.4-1.3 of that for the thin disc. Context. Correlations between high-precision elemental abundance ratios and the kinematics of halo stars provide interesting information about the formation and early evolution of the Galaxy. Aims. Element abundances of G 112-43/44, a metal-poor wide-orbit binary star with extreme kinematics, are revisited. Methods. High-precision studies of the chemical compositions of 94 metal-poor dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood are used to compare abundance ratios for G 112-43/44 with ratios for stars that have similar metallicities, taking into account the effect of deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium on the derived abundances. Gaia EDR3 data are used to compare the kinematics. Results. The X/Fe abundance ratios of the two components of G 112-43/44 agree within ±0.05 dex for nearly all elements, but there is a hint of a correlation between the difference in [X/H] and the elemental condensation temperature, which may be due to planet-star interactions. The Mg/Fe, Si/Fe, Ca/Fe, and Ti/Fe ratios of G 112-43/44 agree with the corresponding ratios for accreted (Gaia-Enceladus) stars, but Mn/Fe, Ni/Fe, Cu/Fe, and Zn/Fe are significantly enhanced, with Δ [Zn/Fe] reaching 0.25 dex. The kinematics show that G 112-43/44 belongs to the Helmi streams in the solar neighbourhood. In view of this, we discuss if the abundance peculiarities of G 112-43/44 can be explained by chemical enrichment from supernova events in the progenitor dwarf galaxy of the Helmi streams. Interestingly, yields calculated for a helium shell detonation Type Ia supernova model can explain the enhancement of Mn/Fe, Ni/Fe, Cu/Fe, and Zn/Fe in G 112-43/44 and three other α-poor stars in the Galactic halo with abundances from the literature, one of which has Helmi stream kinematics. However, the helium shell detonation model also predicts enhanced abundance ratios of Ca/Fe, Ti/Fe, and Cr/Fe, in disagreement with the observed ratios.

We have discovered a 300kpc-wide giant Lya nebula centered on the massive galaxy group RO-1001 at z=2.91 in the COSMOS field. Keck Cosmic Web Imager observations reveal three cold gas filaments converging into the center of the potential well of its ~4x10^13Msun dark matter halo, hosting 1200Msun/yr of star formation as probed by ALMA and NOEMA observations. The nebula morphological and kinematics properties and the prevalence of blueshifted components in the Lya spectra are consistent with a scenario of gas accretion. The upper limits on AGN activity and overall energetics favor gravity as the primary Lya powering source and infall as the main source of gas flows to the system. Although interpretational difficulties remain, with outflows and likely also photoionization with ensuing recombination still playing a role, this finding provides arguably an ideal environment to quantitatively test models of cold gas accretion and galaxy feeding inside an actively star-forming massive halo at high redshift., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. [Context] A fundamental element of galaxy formation is the accretion of mass through mergers of satellites or gas. Recent dynamical analyses based on Gaia data have revealed major accretion events in the history of the Milky Way. Nevertheless, our understanding of the primordial Galaxy is hindered because the bona fide identification of the most metal-poor and correspondingly oldest accreted stars remains challenging. [Aims] Galactic archaeology needs a new accretion diagnostic to understand primordial stellar populations. Contrary to α-elements, neutron-capture elements present unexplained large abundance spreads for low-metallicity stars, which could result from a mixture of formation sites. [Methods] We analysed the abundances of yttrium, europium, magnesium, and iron in Milky Way satellite galaxies, field halo stars, and globular clusters. The chemical information was complemented by orbital parameters based on Gaia data. In particular, we considered the average inclination of the orbits. [Results] The [Y/Eu] abundance behaviour with respect to the [Mg/Fe] turnovers for satellite galaxies of various masses reveals that higher-luminosity systems, for which the [Mg/Fe] abundance declines at higher metallicities, present enhanced [Y/Eu] abundances, particularly in the [Fe/H] regime between -2.25 dex and -1.25 dex. In addition, the analysis has uncovered a chemo-dynamical correlation for both globular clusters and field stars of the Galactic halo, accounting for about half of the [Y/Eu] abundance spread. In particular, [Y/Eu] under-abundances typical of protracted chemical evolutions are preferentially observed in polar-like orbits, pointing to a possible anisotropy in the accretion processes. [Conclusions] Our results strongly suggest that the observed [Y/Eu] abundance spread in the Milky Way halo could result from a mixture of systems with different masses. We present the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) imaging combined with Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) data to study the Canis Major overdensity. The presence of the so-called Blue Plume stars in a low-pollution area of the colour-magnitude diagram allows us to derive the distance and proper motions of this stellar feature along the line of sight of its hypothetical core. The stellar overdensity extends on a large area of the sky at low Galactic latitudes, below the plane, and in the range 230° < ℓ < 255°. According to the orbit derived for Canis Major, it presents an on-plane rotation around the Milky Way. Moreover, additional overdensities of Blue Plume stars are found around the plane and across the Galaxy, proving that these objects are not only associated with that structure. The spatial distribution of these stars, derived using Gaia astrometric data, confirms that the detection of the Canis Major overdensity results more from the warped structure of the Milky Way disc than from the accretion of a dwarf galaxy. © 2020 The Author(s). In this paper, we take advantage of the GAlaxy Evolution and Assembly (GAEA) semi-analytic model to analyse the origin of secondary dependencies in the local galaxy mass - gas metallicity relation. Our model reproduces quite well the trends observed in the local Universe as a function of galaxy star formation rate and different gas-mass phases. We show that the cold gas content (whose largest fraction is represented by the atomic gas phase) can be considered as the third parameter governing the scatter of the predicted mass-metallicity relation, in agreement with the most recent observational measurements. The trends can be explained with fluctuations of the gas accretion rates: a decrease of the gas supply leads to an increase of the gas metallicity due to star formation, while an increase of the available cold gas leads to a metallicity depletion. We demonstrate that the former process is responsible for offsets above the mass-metallicity relation, while the latter is responsible for deviations below the mass-metallicity relation. In low and intermediate mass galaxies, these negative offsets are primarily determined by late gas cooling dominated by material that has been previously ejected due to stellar feedback., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures + 1 Appendix. We present new spectra obtained using Keck/KCWI and perform kinematics and stellar population analyses of the shell galaxy NGC 474, from both the galaxy centre and a region from the outer shell. We show that both regions have similarly extended star formation histories although with different stellar population properties. The central region of NGC 474 is dominated by intermediate-aged stars (8.3 \pm 0.3 Gyr) with subsolar metallicity ([Z/H]= -0.24 \pm 0.07 dex) while the observed shell region, which hosts a substantial population of younger stars, has a mean luminosity-weighted age of 4.0 \pm 0.5 Gyr with solar metallicities ([Z/H]=-0.03 \pm 0.09 dex). Our results are consistent with a scenario in which NGC 474 experienced a major to intermediate merger with a log\((M_*/M_\odot)\sim10 \) mass satellite galaxy at least \sim 2 Gyr ago which produced its shell system. This work shows that the direct spectroscopic study of low-surface brightness stellar features, such as shells, is now feasible and opens up a new window to understanding galaxy formation and evolution., Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 6 pages, 5 figures

We show that the Auriga galaxies which best reproduce the chemodynamical properties of stellar populations in the MW bulge have quiescent merger histories since redshift z ∼ 3.5: their last major merger occurs at tlookback>12Gyr⁠, while subsequent mergers have a stellar mass ratio of ≤1:20, suggesting an upper limit of a few per cent for the mass ratio of the recently proposed Gaia Sausage/Enceladus merger. These Auriga MW-analogues have a negligible fraction of ex-situ stars in the b/p region (⁠30 per cent) and exhibit X-shaped age and abundance distributions. Examining the discs in our sample, we find that in some cases a star-forming ring forms around the bar, which alters the metallicity of the inner regions of the galaxy. Further out in the disc, bar-induced resonances lead to metal-rich ridges in the Vϕ − r plane – the longest of which is due to the Outer Lindblad Resonance. We explore the fundamental relations governing the radial and vertical velocity dispersions of stars in the Milky Way, from combined studies of complementary surveys including GALAH, LAMOST, APOGEE, the NASA $Kepler$ and K2 missions, and $Gaia$ DR2. We find that different stellar samples, even though they target different tracer populations and employ a variety of age estimation techniques, follow the same set of fundamental relations. We provide the clearest evidence to date that, in addition to the well-known dependence on stellar age, the velocity dispersions of stars depend on orbital angular momentum $L_z$, metallicity and height above the plane $|z|$, and are well described by a multiplicatively separable functional form. The dispersions have a power-law dependence on age with exponents of 0.441$\pm 0.007$ and 0.251$\pm 0.006$ for $\sigma_z$ and $\sigma_R$ respectively, and the power law is valid even for the oldest stars. For the solar neighborhood stars, the apparent break in the power law for older stars, as seen in previous studies, is due to the anti-correlation of $L_z$ with age. The dispersions decrease with increasing $L_z$ until we reach the Sun's orbital angular momentum, after which $\sigma_z$ increases (implying flaring in the outer disc) while $\sigma_R$ flattens. The dispersions increase with decreasing metallicity, suggesting that the dispersions increase with birth radius. The dispersions also increase linearly with $|z|$. [Aims]: We aim to measure the proper motion along the Sagittarius stream, which is the missing piece in determining its full 6D phase space coordinates. [Methods]: We conduct a blind search of over-densities in proper motion from the Gaia second data release in a broad region around the Sagittarius stream by applying wavelet transform techniques. [Results]: We find that for most of the sky patches, the highest intensity peaks delineate the path of the Sagittarius stream. The 1500 peaks identified depict a continuous sequence spanning almost 2π in the sky, only obscured when the stream crosses the Galactic disk. Altogether, around 100 000 stars potentially belong to the stream as indicated by a coarse inspection of the color-magnitude diagrams. From these stars, we determine the proper motion along the Sagittarius stream, making it the proper-motion sequence with the largest span and continuity ever measured for a stream. A first comparison with existing N-body models of the stream reveals some discrepancies, especially near the pericenter of the trailing arm and an underestimation of the total proper motion for the leading arm. [Conclusions]: Our study provides a starting point for determining the variation of the population of stars along the stream, the distance to the stream from the red clump stars, and the solar motion. We investigate the discrepancy between oxygen abundance estimations for narrow-line regions of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) type Seyfert 2 derived using direct estimations of the electron temperature (T-e-method) and those derived using photoionization models. In view of this, observational emission-line ratios in the optical range (3000 < lambda(angstrom) < 7000) of Seyfert 2 nuclei compiled from the literature were reproduced by detailed photoionization models built with the CLOUDY code. We find that the derived discrepancies are mainly due to the inappropriate use of the relations between temperatures of the low (t(2)) and high (t(3)) ionization gas zones derived for H II regions in AGN chemical abundance studies. Using a photoionization model grid, we derived a new expression for t(2) as a function of t(3) valid for Seyfert 2 nuclei. The use of this new expression in the AGN estimation of the O/H abundances based on Te-method produces O/H abundances slightly lower (about 0.2 dex) than those derived from detailed photoionization models. The majority of galaxies with current star-formation rates (SFRs), SFRo >= 10^-3 Msun/yr, in the Local Cosmological Volume where observations should be reliable, have the property that their observed SFRo is larger than their average star formation rate. This is in tension with the evolution of galaxies described by delayed-tau models, according to which the opposite would be expected. The tension is apparent in that local galaxies imply the star formation timescale tau approx 6.7 Gyr, much longer than the 3.5-4.5 Gyr obtained using an empirically determined main sequence at several redshifts. Using models where the SFR is a power law in time of the form propto (t - t1)^eta for t1 = 1.8 Gyr (with no stars forming prior to t1) implies that eta = 0.18 +- 0.03. The advent of new sub-millimeter observational facilities has stimulated the desire to model the sub-mm line emission of galaxies within cosmological galaxy formation models. This is typically done in post-processing by applying sub-resolution recipes to describe the properties of the unresolved interstellar medium. At the same time, while there is freedom in how one implements these sorts of recipes, the impact of various choices has yet to be systematically explored in simulations. In this paper, we do just that. We combine a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation with chemical equilibrium networks and numerical radiative transfer models and explore how different choices for the sub-grid modeling affect the predicted CO, [CI], and [CII] emission of galaxies. We find that a key component for a successful model includes a molecular cloud mass-size relation and scaling for the ultraviolet and cosmic ray radiation field that varies based on local ISM properties. Our most successful model adopts a Plummer profile for the radial density distribution of gas within molecular clouds. On the other hand, different assumptions for the clumping of gas within molecular clouds and changes in the slope of the molecular cloud mass distribution function hardly affect the CO, [CI], and [CII] luminosities of galaxies. At fixed star-formation rate the [CII]-SFR ratio of galaxies scales inversely with the pressure acting on molecular clouds, increasing the molecular clouds density and hence decreasing the importance of [CII] line cooling. Overall we find that it is essential that a wide range of sub-mm emission lines arising in vastly different phases of the ISM are used as model constraints in order to limit the freedom in sub-grid choices and we present the details of the most successful model variant., accepted for publication in MNRAS

We perform high-resolution simulations of an MW-like galaxy in a self-interacting cold dark matter model with elastic cross-section over mass of 1 cm2 g−1 (SIDM) and compare to a model without self-interactions (CDM). We run our simulations with and without a time-dependent embedded potential to capture effects of the baryonic disc and bulge contributions. The CDM and SIDM simulations with the embedded baryonic potential exhibit remarkably similar host halo profiles, subhalo abundances, and radial distributions within the virial radius. The SIDM host halo is denser in the centre than the CDM host and has no discernible core, in sharp contrast to the case without the baryonic potential (core size ∼7 kpc). The most massive subhaloes (with Vpeak > 20 km s−1) in our SIDM simulations, expected to host the classical satellite galaxies, have density profiles that are less dense than their CDM analogues at radii less than 500 pc but the deviation diminishes for less massive subhaloes. With the baryonic potential included in the CDM and SIDM simulations, the most massive subhaloes do not display the too-big-to-fail problem. However, the least dense among the massive subhaloes in both these simulations tend to have the smallest pericenter values, a trend that is not apparent among the bright MW satellite galaxies.

The orbits of the least chemically enriched stars open a window on the formation of our Galaxy when it was still in its infancy. The common picture is that these low-metallicity stars are distributed as an isotropic, pressure-supported component since these stars were either accreted from the early building blocks of the assembling Milky Way, or were later brought by the accretion of faint dwarf galaxies. Combining the metallicities and radial velocities from the Pristine and LAMOST surveys and Gaia DR2 parallaxes and proper motions for an unprecedented large and unbiased sample of very metal-poor stars at $[Fe/H]\leq-2.5$ we show that this picture is incomplete. This sample shows strong statistical evidence (at the $5.0\sigma$ level) of asymmetry in their kinematics, favouring prograde motion. Moreover, we find that $31\%$ of the stars that currently reside in the disk do not venture outside of the disk plane throughout their orbit. The discovery of this population implies that a significant fraction of stars with iron abundances $[Fe/H]\leq-2.5$ formed within or concurrently with the Milky Way disk and that the history of the disk was quiet enough to allow them to retain their disk-like orbital properties., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS letter, 5 pages with 1 figure. The Gaia era opens new possibilities for discovering the remnants of disrupted satellite galaxies in the Solar neighborhood. If the population of local accreted stars is correlated with the dark matter sourced by the same mergers, one can then map the dark matter distribution directly. Using two cosmological zoom-in hydrodynamic simulations of Milky Way-mass galaxies from the Latte suite of Fire-2 simulations, we find a strong correlation between the velocity distribution of stars and dark matter at the solar circle that were accreted from luminous satellites. This correspondence holds for dark matter that is either relaxed or in kinematic substructure called debris flow, and is consistent between two simulated hosts with different merger histories. The correspondence is more problematic for streams because of possible spatial offsets between the dark matter and stars. We demonstrate how to reconstruct the dark matter velocity distribution from the observed properties of the accreted stellar population by properly accounting for the ratio of stars to dark matter contributed by individual mergers. After demonstrating this method using the Fire-2 simulations, we apply it to the Milky Way and use it to recover the dark matter velocity distribution associated with the recently discovered stellar debris field in the Solar neighborhood. Based on results from Gaia, we estimate that $42 ^{+26}_{-22}\%$ of the local dark matter that is accreted from luminous mergers is in debris flow., Comment: 18+5 pages, 12+5 figures. Recently van Dokkum et al. (2018b) reported that the galaxy NGC 1052-DF2 (DF2) lacks dark matter if located at $20$ Mpc from Earth. In contrast, DF2 is a dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxy with a normal globular cluster population if it has a much shorter distance near $10$ Mpc. However, DF2 then has a high peculiar velocity wrt. the cosmic microwave background of $886$ $\rm{km\,s^{-1}}$, which differs from that of the Local Group (LG) velocity vector by $1298$ $\rm{km\,s^{-1}}$ with an angle of $117 \, ^{\circ}$. Taking into account the dynamical $M/L$ ratio, the stellar mass, half-light radius, peculiar velocity, motion relative to the LG, and the luminosities of the globular clusters, we show that the probability of finding DF2-like galaxies in the lambda cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) TNG100-1 simulation is at most $1.0\times10^{-4}$ at $11.5$ Mpc and is $4.8\times10^{-7}$ at $20.0$ Mpc. At $11.5$ Mpc, the peculiar velocity is in significant tension with the TNG100-1, TNG300-1, and Millennium simulations, but occurs naturally in a Milgromian cosmology. At $20.0$ Mpc, the unusual globular cluster population would challenge any cosmological model. Estimating that precise measurements of the internal velocity dispersion, stellar mass, and distance exist for $100$ galaxies, DF2 is in $2.6\sigma$ ($11.5$ Mpc) and $4.1\sigma$ ($20.0$ Mpc) tension with standard cosmology. Adopting the former distance for DF2 and assuming that NGC 1052-DF4 is at $20.0$ Mpc, the existence of both is in tension at $\geq4.8\sigma$ with the $\Lambda$CDM model. We explore the effects of environment on star formation in late-type galaxies by studying the dependence of the radial profiles of specific star formation rate (sSFR) on environment and the stellar mass, using a sample of 275 late-type galaxies drawn from the CALIFA survey. We consider three different discrete environments: field galaxies, galaxies in pairs, and galaxies in groups, with stellar masses $9\le \log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \le 12$, and compare their sSFR profiles across the environments. Our results suggest that the stellar mass is the main factor determining the sSFR profiles of late-type galaxies; the influence of AGNs and bars are secondary. We find that the relative size of the bulge plays a key role in depressing star formation towards the center of late-type galaxies. The group environment determines clear differences in the sSFR profiles of galaxies. We find evidence of an outside-in action upon galaxies with stellar masses $9\le \log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \le 10$ in groups. We find a much stronger suppression of star formation in the inner regions of massive galaxies in groups, which may be an indication of a different merger history., Accepted for publication in A&A

The kinematics of the Milky Way disc as a function of age are well measured at the solar radius, but have not been studied over a wider range of Galactocentric radii. Here, we measure the kinematics of mono-age, mono-$\mathrm{[Fe/H]}$ populations in the low and high $\mathrm{[\alpha/Fe]}$ discs between $4 \lesssim R \lesssim 13$ kpc and $|z| \lesssim 2$ kpc using 65,719 stars in common between APOGEE DR14 and $\it{Gaia}$ DR2 for which we estimate ages using a Bayesian neural network model trained on asteroseismic ages. We determine the vertical and radial velocity dispersions, finding that the low and high $\mathrm{[\alpha/Fe]}$ discs display markedly different age--velocity-dispersion relations (AVRs) and shapes $\sigma_z/\sigma_R$. The high $\mathrm{[\alpha/Fe]}$ disc has roughly flat AVRs and constant $\sigma_z/\sigma_R = 0.64\pm 0.04$, whereas the low $\mathrm{[\alpha/Fe]}$ disc has large variations in this ratio which positively correlate with the mean orbital radius of the population at fixed age. The high $\mathrm{[\alpha/Fe]}$ disc component's flat AVRs and constant $\sigma_z/\sigma_R$ clearly indicates an entirely different heating history. Outer disc populations also have flatter radial AVRs than those in the inner disc, likely due to the waning effect of spiral arms. Our detailed measurements of AVRs and $\sigma_z/\sigma_R$ across the disc indicate that low $\mathrm{[\alpha/Fe]}$, inner disc ($R \lesssim 10\,\mathrm{kpc}$) stellar populations are likely dynamically heated by both giant molecular clouds and spiral arms, while the observed trends for outer disc populations require a significant contribution from another heating mechanism such as satellite perturbations. We report an analysis of the metal-rich tail ([Fe/H] $> -0.75$) of halo stars located at distances from the Galactic plane $z$ up to $|z| \sim 10$ kpc, observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). We examine the chemistry, kinematics, and dynamics of this metal-rich halo sample using chemical abundances and radial velocities provided by the fourteenth APOGEE data release (DR14) and proper motions from the second Gaia data release (DR2). The analysis reveals three chemically different stellar populations in the [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] space -- the two distinct halo populations already reported in the literature, and a third group with intermediate [Mg/Fe] $\sim$+0.1. We derive the $U$, $V$ and $W$ velocity components with respect to the Local Standard of Rest, as well as orbits for the three stellar groups, and find that they differ also in their kinematical and dynamical properties. The high-[Mg/Fe] population exhibits a mean prograde rotation, as well as orbits that are more bound and closer to the plane, whereas the low-[Mg/Fe] population has $ $ closer to 0, and stars that move in less-bound orbits reaching larger distances from the centre and the Galactic plane. The intermediate-Mg stars exhibit different orbital characteristics, moving with a strong prograde rotation and low excentricity, but in less-bound orbits. This stellar population resembles the two stellar overdensities lying about $|z| \sim 5$ kpc recently reported in the literature, for which a disc origin has been claimed.

Aims: It is well known that the presence of baryons affects the dark matter host haloes. Exploring the galaxy assembly history together with the dark matter haloes properties through time can provide a way to measure these effects. Methods: We study the properties of four Milky Way mass dark matter haloes from the Aquarius project during their assembly history, between $z = 0 - 4$. In this work, we use the SPH run from Scannapieco et al. (2009) and the dark matter only counterpart as case studies. To asses the robustness of our findings, we compare them with one of the haloes run using a moving-mesh technique and different sub-grid scheme. Results: Our results show that the cosmic evolution of the dark matter halo profiles depends on the assembly history of the baryons. We find that the dark matter profiles do not significantly change with time, hence they become stable, when the fraction of baryons accumulated in the central regions reaches 80 percent of its present mass within the virial radius. Furthermore, the mass accretion history shows that the haloes that assembled earlier are those that contain a larger amount of baryonic mass aforetime, which in turn allows the dark matter halo profiles to reach a stable configuration earlier. For the SPH haloes, we find that the specific angular momentum of the dark matter particles within the five percent of the virial radius at z = 0, remains approximately constant from the time at which 60 percent of the stellar mass is gathered. We explore different theoretical and empirical models for the contraction of the haloes through redshift. A model to better describe the contraction of the haloes through redshift evolution must depend on the stellar mass content in the inner regions., 17 pages, 14 figures. The astrometric sample of Gaia allows us to study the outermost Galactic disc, the halo and their interface. It is precisely at the very edge of the disc where the effects of external perturbations are expected to be the most noticeable. Our goal is to detect the kinematic substructure present in the halo and at the edge of the Milky Way (MW) disc, and provide observational constraints on their phase-space distribution. We download, one HEALpix at a time, the proper motion histogram of distant stars, to which we apply a Wavelet Transformation to reveal the significant overdensities. We then analyse the large coherent structures that appear in the sky. We reveal a sharp yet complex anticentre dominated by Monoceros (MNC) and the Anticentre Stream (ACS) in the north, which we find with an intensity comparable to the Magellanic clouds and the Sagittarius stream, and by MNC south and TriAnd at negative latitudes. Our method allows us to perform a morphological analysis of MNC and ACS, both spanning more than 100$^\circ$ in longitude, and to provide a high purity sample of giants with which we track MNC down to latitudes as low as $\sim$5$^\circ$. Their colour-magnitude diagram is consistent with extended structures at a distance of $\sim$10-11 kpc originated in the disc, with a very low ratio of RR Lyrae over M giants, and kinematics compatible with the rotation curve at those distances or only slightly slower. We present a precise characterisation of MNC and ACS, two previously known structures that our method reveals naturally, allowing us to detect them without limiting ourselves to a particular stellar type and, for the first time, using only kinematics. Our results allow future studies to model their chemo-dynamics and evolution, thus constraining some of the most influential processes that shaped the MW., Submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics. The oldest stars in the Milky Way (MW) bear imprints of the Galaxy's early assembly history. We use FIRE cosmological zoom-in simulations of three MW-mass disk galaxies to study the spatial distribution, chemistry, and kinematics of the oldest surviving stars ($z_{\rm form} \gtrsim 5$) in MW-like galaxies. We predict the oldest stars to be less centrally concentrated at $z=0$ than stars formed at later times as a result of two processes. First, the majority of the oldest stars are not formed $\textit{in situ}$ but are accreted during hierarchical assembly. These $\textit{ex situ}$ stars are deposited on dispersion-supported, halo-like orbits but dominate over old stars formed $\textit{in situ}$ in the solar neighborhood, and in some simulations, even in the galactic center. Secondly, old stars formed $\textit{in situ}$ are driven outwards by bursty star formation and energetic feedback processes that create a time-varying gravitational potential at $z\gtrsim 2$, similar to the process that creates dark matter cores and expands stellar orbits in bursty dwarf galaxies. The total fraction of stars that are ancient is more than an order of magnitude higher for sight lines $\textit{away}$ from the bulge and inner halo than for inward-looking sight lines. Although the task of identifying specific stars as ancient remains challenging, we anticipate that million-star spectral surveys and photometric surveys targeting metal-poor stars already include hundreds of stars formed before $z=5$. N-body simulations of the interaction between the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy and the Milky Way are performed to study whether it is possible to reproduce both the bifurcations in the tidal streams and the physical properties of Sagittarius. Both galaxies are simulated as sets of particles (live potentials). The initial structures are formed using GALIC and the gravitational interaction between these galaxies is simulated with GADGET-2. Sagittarius initially is simulated as a rotating disk-type galaxy with two components: dark matter halo and stellar disk and the Milky Way is a disk galaxy with three components: dark matter halo, stellar disk and central spheroid. Several numerical simulations of the interaction of this galaxy with the Milky Way with angles between the orbital angular momentum and the disc angular momentum in the range 180° ≤θ ≤ 0° were performed, showing that, although the position and physical properties of Sagittarius are not reproduced entirely by the remnant, the bifurcations appear clearly when 180° ≤θ < 90°. Resumen Se realizan simulaciones de N-cuerpos de la interacción entre la galaxia enana Sagitario y la Vía Láctea para estudiar si es posible reproducir tanto las bifurcaciones en las corrientes de marea como las propiedades físicas de Sagitario. Ambas galaxias son simuladas como conjuntos de partículas (potencial vivo). Las estructuras iniciales son conformadas en GALIC y la interacción gravitacional entre estas galaxias es simulada con GADGET-2. Sagitario inicialmente es una galaxia de tipo disco rotante con dos componentes: Halo de materia oscura y disco estelar y la Vía Láctea como es usual, es una galaxia de disco con tres componentes: halo de materia oscura, disco estelar y esferoide. Se realizan varias simulaciones de la interacción del progenitor de esta galaxia enana con la Vía Láctea, donde el ángulo entre el momento angular orbital y el momento angular del disco es 180° ≤ θ ≤ 0° mostrando que aunque no se reproducen en su totalidad la posición y propiedades físicas del remanente de Sagitario, las bifurcaciones aparecen de modo evidente cuando 180° ≤θ ≤ 90°.

We present the late-time evolution of m12m, a cosmological simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy from the FIRE project. The simulation forms a bar after redshift z = 0.2. We show that the evolution of the model exhibits behaviours typical of kinematic fractionation, with a bar weaker in older populations, an X-shape traced by the younger, metal-rich populations and a prominent X-shape in the edge-on mean metallicity map. Because of the late formation of the bar in m12m, stars forming after 10 Gyr (z = 0.34) significantly contaminate the bulge, at a level higher than is observed at high latitudes in the Milky Way, implying that its bar cannot have formed as late as in m12m. We also study the model's vertex deviation of the velocity ellipsoid as a function of stellar metallicity and age in the equivalent of Baade's Window. The formation of the bar leads to a non-zero vertex deviation. We find that metal-rich stars have a large vertex deviation (~ 40 degrees), which becomes negligible for metal-poor stars, a trend also found in the Milky Way, despite not matching in detail. We demonstrate that the vertex deviation also varies with stellar age and is large for stars as old as 9 Gyr, while 13 Gyr old stars have negligible vertex deviation. When we exclude stars that have been accreted, the vertex deviation is not significantly changed, demonstrating that the observed variation of vertex deviation with metallicity is not necessarily due to an accreted population., Published in MNRAS, 485, 5073. Carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars represent a sizeable fraction of all known metal-poor stars in the Galaxy. Their formation and composition remains a significant topic of investigation within the stellar astrophysics community. We analysed a sample of low-resolution spectra of 30 dwarf stars, obtained using the the visual and near UV FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph for the Very Large Telescope (FORS/VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrographs (GMOS) at the GEMINI telescope, to derive their metallicity and carbon abundance. We derived C and Ca from all spectra, and Fe and Ba from the majority of the stars. We have extended the population statistics of CEMP stars and have confirmed that in general, stars with a high C abundance belonging to the high C band show a high Ba-content (CEMP-s or -r/s), while stars with a normal C-abundance or that are C-rich, but belong to the low C band, are normal in Ba (CEMP-no)., A&A in press

We investigate the galaxy population in simulated proto-cluster regions using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, coupled to merger trees extracted from N-body simulations. We select the most massive clusters at redshift $z=0$ from our set of simulations, and follow their main progenitors back in time. The analysis shows that proto-cluster regions are dominated by central galaxies and their number decreases with time as many become satellites, clustering around the central object. In agreement with observations, we find an increasing velocity dispersion with cosmic time, the increase being faster for satellites. The analysis shows that proto-clusters are very extended regions, $\gtrsim 20 \, Mpc$ at $z \gtrsim 1$. The fraction of galaxies in proto-cluster regions that are not progenitor of cluster galaxies varies with redshift, stellar mass and area considered. It is about 20-30 per cent for galaxies with stellar mass $\sim 10^9\,{\rm M}_{\sun}$, while negligible for the most massive galaxies considered. Nevertheless, these objects have properties similar to those of progenitors. We investigate the building-up of the passive-sequence in clusters, and find that their progenitors are on average always active at any redshift of interest of proto-clusters. The main mechanism which quenches their star formation is the removal of the hot gas reservoir at the time of accretion. The later galaxies are accreted (become satellite), and the more the cold gas available, the longer the time spent as active. Central galaxies are active over all redshift range considered, although a non-negligible fraction of them become passive at redshift $z, 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We demonstrate how the properties of a galaxy depend on the mass of its host dark matter subhalo, using two independent models of galaxy formation. For the cases of stellar mass and black hole mass, the median property value displays a monotonic dependence on subhalo mass. The slope of the relation changes for subhalo masses for which heating by active galactic nuclei becomes important. The median property values are predicted to be remarkably similar for central and satellite galaxies. The two models predict considerable scatter around the median property value, though the size of the scatter is model dependent. There is only modest evolution with redshift in the median galaxy property at a fixed subhalo mass. Properties such as cold gas mass and star formation rate, however, are predicted to have a complex dependence on subhalo mass. In these cases subhalo mass is not a good indicator of the value of the galaxy property. We illustrate how the predictions in the galaxy property - subhalo mass plane differ from the assumptions made in empirical models of galaxy clustering by reconstructing the model output using a subhalo abundance matching scheme. In its simplest form, abundance matching generally does not reproduce the clustering predicted by the models, typically resulting in an overprediction of the clustering signal. We show how the basic abundance matching scheme can be extended to reproduce the model predictions more faithfully, which has implications for the analysis of galaxy clustering, particularly for low abundance samples., 16 pages, 12 figures. We study the stellar populations of bulges of MilkyWay-like (MW-like) galaxies with the aim of identifying the physical processes involved in the formation of the bulge of our Galaxy. We use the semi-analytic model of galaxy formation and evolution SAG adapted to this aim; these kind of models can trace the properties of galaxies and their components like stellar discs, bulges and haloes, but resolution limits prevent them from reaching the scale of stellar populations (SPs). Properties of groups of stars formed during single star formation events are stored and tracked in the model and results are compared with observations of stars in the galactic bulge. MW-like galaxies are selected using two different criteria. One of them considers intrinsic photo-metric properties and the second is focused on the cosmological context of the local group (LG) of galaxies. We compare our model results with spectroscopic and photometric stellar metallicity distributions. We find that 87 per cent of stars in bulges of MW-type galaxies in our model are accreted and formed in starbursts during disc instability events. Mergers contribute to 13 per cent of the mass budget of the bulge and are responsible for the low metallicity tail of the distribution. Abundance ratios of α elements with respect to iron, [α/Fe], are measured in SPs of model galaxies. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), one of the programs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), has now completed its systematic, homogeneous spectroscopic survey sampling all major populations of the Milky Way. After a three year observing campaign on the Sloan 2.5-m Telescope, APOGEE has collected a half million high resolution (R~22,500), high S/N (>100), infrared (1.51-1.70 microns) spectra for 146,000 stars, with time series information via repeat visits to most of these stars. This paper describes the motivations for the survey and its overall design---hardware, field placement, target selection, operations---and gives an overview of these aspects as well as the data reduction, analysis and products. An index is also given to the complement of technical papers that describe various critical survey components in detail. Finally, we discuss the achieved survey performance and illustrate the variety of potential uses of the data products by way of a number of science demonstrations, which span from time series analysis of stellar spectral variations and radial velocity variations from stellar companions, to spatial maps of kinematics, metallicity and abundance patterns across the Galaxy and as a function of age, to new views of the interstellar medium, the chemistry of star clusters, and the discovery of rare stellar species. We use the first Gaia data release, combined with RAVE and APOGEE spectroscopic surveys, to investigate the origin of halo stars within -1. The orbital directions of these metal-rich halo stars are preferentially aligned with the disk rotation, in sharp contrast with the isotropic orbital distribution of the more metal-poor halo stars. We find similar properties in the Latte cosmological zoom-in simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy from the FIRE project. In Latte, metal-rich halo stars formed primarily inside of the solar circle, while lower-metallicity halo stars preferentially formed at larger distances (extending beyond the virial radius). This suggests that metal-rich halo stars in the Solar neighborhood in fact formed in-situ within the Galactic disk rather than having been accreted from satellite systems. We study the chemical evolution of the thick and thin discs of the Galaxy by comparing detailed chemical evolution models with recent data from the AMBRE Project. The data suggest that the stars in the thick and thin discs form two distinct sequences with the thick disc stars showing higher [{\alpha}/Fe] ratios. We adopt two different approaches to model the evolution of thick and thin discs. In particular, we adopt: i) a two-infall approach where the thick disc forms fast and before the thin disc and by means of a fast gas accretion episode, whereas the thin disc forms by means of a second accretion episode on a longer timescale; ii) a parallel approach, where the two discs form in parallel but at different rates. By comparing our model results with the observed [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] and the metallicity distribution functions in the two Galactic components, we conclude that the parallel approach can account for a group of {\alpha}-enhanced metal rich stars present in the data, whereas the two-infall approach cannot explain these stars unless they are the result of stellar migration. In both approaches, the thick disc has formed on a timescale of accretion of 0.1 Gyr, whereas the thin disc formed on a timescale of 7 Gyr in the solar region. In the two-infall approach a gap in star formation between the thick and thin disc formation of several hundreds of Myr should be present, at variance with the parallel approach where no gap is present., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. The first and second moments of stellar velocities encode important information about the formation history of the Galactic halo. However, due to the lack of tangential motion and inaccurate distances of the halo stars, the velocity moments in the Galactic halo have largely remained "known unknowns". Fortunately, our off-centric position within the Galaxy allows us to estimate these moments in the galacto-centric frame using the observed radial velocities of the stars alone. We use these velocities coupled with the Hierarchical Bayesian scheme, which allows easy marginalisation over the missing data (the proper-motion, and uncertainty-free distance and line-of-sight velocity), to measure the velocity dispersions, orbital anisotropy ($\beta$) and streaming motion ($v_{\rm rot}$) of the halo main-sequence turn-off (MSTO) and K-giant (KG) stars in the inner stellar halo (r $\lesssim 15$ kpc). We study the metallicity bias in kinematics of the halo stars and observe that the comparatively metal-rich ([Fe/H]$>-1.4$) and the metal-poor ([Fe/H]$\leq - 1.4$) MSTO samples show a clear systematic difference in $v_{\rm rot} \sim 20-40$ km s$^{-1}$, depending on how restrictive the spatial cuts to cull the disk contamination are. The bias is also detected in KG samples but with less certainty. Both MSTO and KG populations suggest that the inner stellar halo of the Galaxy is radially biased i.e. $\sigma_r>\sigma_\theta$ or $\sigma_\phi$ and $\beta \simeq 0.5$. The apparent metallicity contrariety in the rotation velocity among the halo sub-populations supports the co-existence of multiple populations in the galactic halo that may have formed through distinct formation scenarios, i.e. in-situ versus accretion., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

It is in a crowded field very close to the Galactic plane and the color-magnitude diagram shows significant field contamination and possible differential reddening; it is a relatively understudied cluster for these reasons, but its location makes it a key object for determining Galactic abundance distributions. Aims. New data from the Gaia-ESO Survey enable the first ever radial velocity and spectroscopic metallicity measurements for this cluster. We aim to use velocities to isolate cluster members, providing more leverage for determining cluster parameters. Methods. Gaia-ESO Survey data for 167 potential members have yielded radial velocity measurements, which were used to determine the systemic velocity of the cluster and membership of individual stars. Atmospheric parameters were also used as a check on membership when available. Literature photometry was used to re-determine cluster parameters based on radial velocity member stars only; theoretical isochrones are fit in the V, V-I diagram. Cluster abundance measurements of ten radial-velocity member stars with high-resolution spectroscopy are presented for 24 elements. These abundances have been compared to local disk stars, and where possible placed within the context of literature gradient studies. Results. We find Trumpler 23 to have an age of 0.80 ± 0.10 Gyr, significant differential reddening with an estimated mean cluster E(V-I) of 1.02, and an apparent distance modulus of 14.15 ± 0.20. As observational evidence steadily accumulates, the nature of the Galactic bulge has proven to be rather complex: the structural, kinematic, and chemical analyses often lead to contradictory conclusions. The nature of the metal-rich bulge - and especially of the metal-poor bulge - and their relation with other Galactic components, still need to be firmly defined on the basis of statistically significant high-quality data samples. Aims. We used the fourth internal data release of the Gaia-ESO survey to characterize the bulge metallicity distribution function (MDF), magnesium abundance, spatial distribution, and correlation of these properties with kinematics. Moreover, the homogeneous sampling of the different Galactic populations provided by the Gaia-ESO survey allowed us to perform a comparison between the bulge, thin disk, and thick disk sequences in the [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] plane in order to constrain the extent of their eventual chemical similarities. Methods. We obtained spectroscopic data for ∼2500 red clump stars in 11 bulge fields, sampling the area -10° ≥ l ≥ +8° and -10° ≥ b ≥ -4° from the fourth internal data release of the Gaia-ESO survey. A sample of ∼6300 disk stars was also selected for comparison. Spectrophotometric distances computed via isochrone fitting allowed us to define a sample of stars likely located in the bulge region. Results. From a Gaussian mixture models (GMM) analysis, the bulge MDF is confirmed to be bimodal across the whole sampled area. The relative ratio between the two modes of the MDF changes as a function of b, with metal-poor stars dominating at high latitudes. The metal-rich stars exhibit bar-like kinematics and display a bimodality in their magnitude distribution, a feature which is tightly associated with the X-shape bulge. They overlap with the metal-rich end of the thin disk sequence in the [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] plane. On the other hand, metal-poor bulge stars have a more isotropic hot kinematics and do not participate in the X-shape bulge. Their Mg enhancement level and general shape in the [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] plane is comparable to that of the thick disk sequence. The position at which [Mg/Fe] starts to decrease with [Fe/H], called the "knee", is observed in the metal-poor bulge at [Fe/H] = -0:37 ± 0:09, being 0.06 dex higher than that of the thick disk. Although this difference is inside the error bars, it suggest a higher star formation rate (SFR) for the bulge than for the thick disk. We estimate an upper limit for this difference of Δ[Fe/H] = 0:24 dex. Context. Pismis 18 is a moderately populated, intermediate-Age open cluster located within the solar circle at a Galactocentric distance of about seven kpc. Few open clusters have been studied in detail in the inner disc region before the Gaia-ESO Survey. Aims. New data from the Gaia-ESO Survey allowed us to conduct an extended radial velocity membership study as well as spectroscopic metallicity and detailed chemical abundance measurements for this cluster. Methods. Gaia-ESO Survey data for 142 potential members, lying on the upper main sequence and on the red clump, yielded radial velocity measurements, which, together with proper motion measurements from the Gaia Second Data Release (Gaia DR2), were used to determine the systemic velocity of the cluster and membership of individual stars. Photometry from Gaia DR2 was used to re-determine cluster parameters based on high confidence member stars only. Cluster abundance measurements of six radial-velocity member stars with UVES high-resolution spectroscopy are presented for 23 elements. Results. The average radial velocity of 26 high confidence members is-27.5 ± 2.5 (std) km s with an average proper motion of pmra =-5.65 ± 0.08 (std) mas yr and pmdec =-2.29 ± 0.11 (std) mas yr. According to the new estimates, based on high confidence members, Pismis 18 has an age of τ = 700 Myr, interstellar reddening of E(B-V) = 0.562 mag and a de-reddened distance modulus of DM = 11.96 mag. The median metallicity of the cluster (using the six UVES stars) is [Fe/H] = +0.23 ± 0.05 dex, with [α/Fe] = 0.07 ± 0.13 and a slight enhancement of s-and r-neutron-capture elements. Conclusions. With the present work, we fully characterized the open cluster Pismis 18. We confirmed its present location in the inner disc. We estimated a younger age than the previous literature values and we gave, for the first time, its metallicity and its detailed abundances. (Abridged) Any viable cosmological model in which galaxies interact predicts the existence of primordial and tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs). In particular, in the standard model of cosmology ($\Lambda$CDM), according to the dual dwarf galaxy theorem, there must exist both primordial dark matter-dominated and dark matter-free TDGs with different radii. We study the frequency, evolution, and properties of TDGs in a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. We use the hydrodynamical cosmological Illustris-1 simulation to identify tidal dwarf galaxy candidates (TDGCs) and study their present-day physical properties. We also present movies on the formation of a few galaxies lacking dark matter, confirming their tidal dwarf nature. TDGCs can however also be formed via other mechanisms, such as from ram-pressure-stripped material or, speculatively, from cold-accreted gas. We find 97 TDGCs with $M_{stellar} >5 \times 10^7 M_\odot$ at redshift $z = 0$, corresponding to a co-moving number density of $2.3 \times 10^{-4} h^3 cMpc^{-3}$. The most massive TDGC has $M_{total} = 3.1 \times 10^9 M_\odot$, comparable to that of the Large Magellanic Cloud. TDGCs are phase-space-correlated, reach high metallicities, and are typically younger than dark matter-rich dwarf galaxies. We report for the first time the verification of the dual dwarf theorem in a self-consistent $\Lambda$CDM cosmological simulation. Simulated TDGCs and dark matter-dominated galaxies populate different regions in the radius-mass diagram in disagreement with observations of early-type galaxies. The dark matter-poor galaxies formed in Illustris-1 have comparable radii to observed dwarf galaxies and to TDGs formed in other galaxy-encounter simulations. In Illustris-1, only 0.17% of all selected galaxies with $M_{stellar} = 5 \times 10^7-10^9 M_\odot$ are TDGCs or dark matter-poor dwarf galaxies. Oxygen and carbon are important elements in stellar populations. Their behavior refers to the formation history of the stellar populations. C and O abundances would also obviously influence stellar opacities and the overall metal abundance $Z$. With observed high-quality spectroscopic properties, we construct stellar models with C and O elements, to give more accurate ages for 70 metal-poor dwarfs, which have been determined to be high-$\alpha$ halo, low-$\alpha$ halo and thick-disk stars. Our results show that high-$\alpha$ halo stars are relatively older than low-$\alpha$ halo stars by around 2.0 Gyr. The thick-disk population has an age range between the two halo populations. The age distribution profiles indicate that high-$\alpha$ halo and low-$\alpha$ halo stars match the in situ accretion simulation by Zolotov et al., and the thick-disk stars might be formed in a relatively quiescent and long-lasting process. We also note that stellar ages are very sensitive to O abundance, since the ages clearly increase with increasing [O/Fe] values. Many properties of the Milky Way's dark matter halo, including its mass assembly history, concentration, and subhalo population, remain poorly constrained. We explore the connection between these properties of the Milky Way and its satellite galaxy population, especially the implication of the presence of the Magellanic Clouds for the properties of the Milky Way halo. Using a suite of high-resolution $N$-body simulations of Milky Way-mass halos with a fixed final Mvir ~ 10^{12.1}Msun, we find that the presence of Magellanic Cloud-like satellites strongly correlates with the assembly history, concentration, and subhalo population of the host halo, such that Milky Way-mass systems with Magellanic Clouds have lower concentration, more rapid recent accretion, and more massive subhalos than typical halos of the same mass. Using a flexible semi-analytic galaxy formation model that is tuned to reproduce the stellar mass function of the classical dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way with Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo, we show that adopting host halos with different mass-assembly histories and concentrations can lead to different best-fit models for galaxy-formation physics, especially for the strength of feedback. These biases arise because the presence of the Magellanic Clouds boosts the overall population of high-mass subhalos, thus requiring a different stellar-mass-to-halo-mass ratio to match the data. These biases also lead to significant differences in the mass--metallicity relation, the kinematics of low-mass satellites, the number counts of small satellites associated with the Magellanic Clouds, and the stellar mass of Milky Way itself.
