Osobitost geoturizma leži u naglasku na edukaciji i razumijevanju geoloških i geomorfoloških oblika i procesa, stoga je interpretacija ključni aspekt geoturizma. Koriste se razne tehnike interpretacije, ali najpopularnije sredstvo su interpretacijske ploče – samostalne ili na poučnoj stazi. Geomorfološki lokalitet Medjame nalazi se u Samoborskom gorju, u selu Dubrava Samoborska, 3 km SZ od Samobora. Medjame je mali krško plato ispresijecan pukotinama duž kojih je oblikovan niz speleoloških pojava (špilja i jama) vrlo sličnog postanka i morfologije. Ovaj lokalitet je jedinstvena geomorfološka pojava u panonskoperipanonskoj Hrvatskoj i šire, te zato predstavlja idealnu učionicu o krškom reljefu. Poučna staza „Medjame“ upoznaje posjetitelja s geološkim, geomorfološkim i biološkim obilježjima lokaliteta, ali i ekologijom, budući da je lokalitet do 2006. godine bio onečišćen. Sama poučna staza sadrži klasične interpretacijske ploče na hrvatskom jeziku, te je osmišljena i promotivna brošura. Cilj rada je kroz interpretaciju potaknuti razumijevanje za potrebu zaštite lokaliteta Medjame kao geomorfološkog spomenika prirode. The specificity of geotourism lies in the emphasis on education and understanding of geological and geomorphological forms and processes, so interpretation is a key aspect of geotourism. Various interpretation techniques are used, but the most popular are interpretation boards - independent or on an educational trail. The geomorphological site of Medjame is located in Samoborsko gorje, in the village of Dubrava Samoborska, 3 km NW of Samobor. Medjame is a small karst plateau intersected by fissures along which a number of speleological features (caves and pits) of very similar origin and morphology have been formed. This site is a unique geomorphological phenomenon in Pannonian-Peripannonian Croatia and broader, and therefore represents an ideal classroom on karst relief. The educational trail "Medjame" introduces visitors to the geological, geomorphological and biological characteristics of the site, but also ecology, since the site was polluted until 2006. The educational trail itself contains classic interpretation boards in the Croatian language, and a promotional brochure has been designed. The aim of this paper is to encourage understanding through interpretation for the need to protect the Medjama site as a geomorphological natural monument.

U okolici grada Zagreba postoji nekoliko turistički uređenih podzemnih objekata. U ovom su radu opisani trenutna geoturistička ponuda i geološke karakteristike špilje Veternice i rudnika Zrinski na području Parka Prirode Medvednica te Grgosove špilje i Rudnika sveta Barbara na području Samoborskog gorja. Napravljena je mikroskopska analiza reprezentativnih uzoraka stijena s odabranih lokaliteta te su opisani njihov sastav i karakteristike s ciljem da rezultati dobiveni ovim radom postanu dodatan sadržaj geoturističke ponude. Stijene unutar kojih su formirane obje špilje uglavnom su vapnenci miocenske starosti taloženi u plitkom moru te su bogati mikrofosilima iz skupina crvenih algi, foraminifera, mahovnjaka i ježinaca. Mineralizacija na području rudnika Zrinski koji se nalazi u dolomitima pripada Mississippi Valley tipu, a u okolici rudnika nalaze se zeleni škriljavci. Mineralizacija na području rudnika sveta Barbara ima karakteristike stratabound i SEDEX mineralizacije, a najčešći rudni minerali su siderit, hematit, halkopirit, barit, galenit, gips i drugi. Na kraju rada nalaze se skice potencijalnih edukativnih tabli za svaki od istraživanih objekata. In the vicinity of Zagreb, there are several tourist visitor-friendly underground objects. This thesis describes the current geotourist offer and geological characteristics of the Veternica cave and the Zrinski mine of the Nature Park Medvednica and the Grgos cave and the Saint Barbara mine of the Samobor Mountains. The microscopic analysis of representative rock samples from selected localities was performed and their composition and characteristics were described with the aim of making the results obtained by this work an additional content of the geotourism offer. The rocks within both of the caves were formed are mostly Miocene limestones deposited in a shallow sea and are rich in microfossils of the following groups: red algae, foraminifera, bryozoa and sea urchins. The mineralization in the area of the Zrinski mine is of the Mississippi Valley-type, and in the vicinity of the mine, there is a greenschist. Mineralization in the Saint Barbara mine area has the characteristics of stratabound and SEDEX mineralization and its most common ore minerals are siderite, hematite, chalcopyrite, barite, galena, gypsum and others. Potential educational boards for each of the researched objects can be found at the end of the thesis.

U Bosni i Hercegovini nedostaje istraživanja na području valorizacije georaznolikosti, što je rezultiralo zanemarivanjem njezinih znanstvenih vrijednosti, ali i nedovoljnim razvojem geoturizma. Cilj je ovoga rada valorizirati odabrane geomorfolokalitete Parka prirode Blidinje s obzirom na njihovu geoturističku vrijednost. Primijenjeni metodološki koncept nastao je kao rezultat analize postojećih metodoloških koncepata valorizacije georaznolikosti, pri čemu su objedinjeni kriteriji za procjenu osnovne, dodane, zaštitne i turističke vrijednosti. Jedan od ciljeva rada jest i doprinos boljem razumijevanju i primjeni metodoloških koncepata turističke valorizacije, posebice u okviru zaštićenih prirodnih područja. Tijekom istraživanja izdvojena su 44 lokaliteta, a na osnovi rezultata preliminarne procjene kreirana je lista s ukupno 23 lokaliteta koji su valorizirani, od čega se njih osam izdvaja većom ocjenom od prosječne. Rezultati ovoga istraživanja upućuju na potencijal za razvoj ponude geoturizma PP Blidinje, čiji bi temelj trebali biti najbolje ocijenjeni geomorfolokaliteti., In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is an evident lack of research in the field of geodiversity valorization, which has resulted in the neglect of its scientific values, as well as insufficient development of geotourism. The aim of this paper is to valorize selected geomorphological sites in Blidinje Nature Park, considering their geotourism value. The applied methodological concept was created as a result of an analysis of existing methodological templates of geodiversity valorization, where the criteria for the assessment of basic, additional, conservation, and tourism value were combined. In this regard, one of the objectives of the paper is to contribute to a better understanding and application of methodological concepts of tourism valorization, especially within protected nature areas. During the research, 44 sites were singled out and, based on the results of the preliminary assessment, a list was created with a total of 23 sites that were valorized of which eight stood out with a higher than average mark. The results of this research indicate the potential for the development of the geotourism supply of Blidinje Nature Park, for which the basis should be the best-rated geomorphological sites.

Cilj ovog diplomskog rada je usporediti i analizirati potencijale i iskoristivost rudarske geobaštine u Europi i Hrvatskoj. Rad se temelji na teorijskoj analizi dva lokaliteta u europskim zemljama te tri lokaliteta u Hrvatskoj. Kroz osnovnu značajku geoturizma - spajanja prirodnih i kulturnih obilježja lokaliteta, uspoređeni su lokaliteti koji predstavljaju uspješan primjer takve kohezije (europski lokaliteti) te lokaliteti koji svoj potencijal i vrijednosti nisu uspjeli iskoristiti (hrvatski lokaliteti). Nakon teorijske analize zaključeno je kako su europski lokaliteti odličan primjer svjesnog upravljanja turističkim potencijalima te kako na jednostavan način, uz odličnu osnovu, lokaliteti mogu postići odličnu turističku vrijednost. The aim of this work was to compare and analyze the potentials and utilization of mining geo-heritage in Europe and Croatia. The paper is based on a theoretical analysis of two localities in European countries and three localities in Croatia. Through the basic feature of geotourism - the merging of natural and cultural features of localities, localities that represent a successful example of such cohesion (European sites) and sites that failed to exploit their potential and values (Croatian sites) were compared. After theoretical analysis, it was concluded that European sites are an excellent example of conscious management of tourist potentials and that in a simple way, on an excellent basis, localities can achieve excellent tourist value.

U ovom diplomskom radu objašnjeno je što su geoparkovi, kakva je njihova podijela te kako se dolazi do statusa geoparka. Cilj rada je prikazati geoturistiĉki potencijal, geološku i geomorfološku baštinu, bioraznolikost i antropogene resurse ogulinskog kraja kao temelj za dobivanje statusa geoparka, s osvrtom na odrţivi razvoj prostora i planiranje turistiĉke ponude kako se ne bi narušio prirodni sklad i ravnoteţa izmeĊu prirode i ĉovjeka. Opisan je Grad Ogulin, Frankopanski kaštel, Đulin ponor, Šmitovo jezero, jezero Sabljaci, Klek, Bjelolasica, Bijele i Samarske stijene te endemska flora i fauna karakteristiĉna za ta podruĉja. Spomenuti su najpoznatiji geoparkovi svijeta te jedini hrvatski geopark Papuk. U radu se daje osvrt na dosadašnji stupanj zaštite opisanih lokaliteta i daje se prijedlog za daljnja poboljšanja pri ĉemu se i predlaţu mjere za zaštitu i promociju spomenutih lokaliteta, povećanje turistiĉkih kapaciteta, provedbu edukacijskih tura u svrhu odrţivog razvoja cjelokupnog podruĉja. In this graduate thesis, the concept of geoparks is explained, as well as how they are divided and how to obtain the title of geopark. The aim of the paper is to show bio-tourism potential, geological and geomorphological heritage, biodiversity and anthropogenic resources of the small town Ogulin as the basis for obtaining the geopark status, with a view to sustainable development of the space and planning of the tourist offer in order not to disturb the natural harmony and balance between nature and man. The town of Ogulin, the Frankopan castle, the abyss of Đula, Šmit lake, Lake Sabljaci, Klek, Bjelolasica and the it's endemic flora and fauna are characteristic of these areas. The most famous geoparks of the world are mentioned, and the only Croatian Geopark Papuk. This paper gives an overview of the previous protection level on described sites, proposes further improvements, and measures for the protection and promotion of these sites, increase of tourist capacities and implementation of education tours for the purpose of sustainable development of the whole area.

Sprovedena istraživanja u ovoj studiji obuhvatila su izdvajanje, opis, evaluaciju i valorizaciju objekata geonasleđa u cilju razvoja istraživane oblasti sa stanovišta geonauka, geoturizma i geoekologije. Na izučavanom području objekti geonasleđa su evidentirani, interpretirani, vrednovani i kategorisani, dat je predlog promocije geoobjekata, i na kraju predložena dopuna inventara objekata geonasleđa Srbije.U protekle četiri godine, na kompleksu geotopa Golije i Peštera istražena su geološka svojstva stena (tip stene, starost, fosilni sadržaj, morfološke i hidrogeološke karakteristike itd.), na osnovu čega je bilo omogućeno sistematsko i kompleksno rangiranje objekata u smislu geonasleđa. Izdvojeno je i predloženo 13 potencijalnih objekata geonasleđa (1 objekat lokalnog značaja, 8 objekata regionalnog značaja i 3 objekta nacionalnog značaja). Na Inventar listi geonasleđa Srbije nalazi se 12 objekata geonasleđa sa ovog područja, koji su svrstani u 3 kategorije (7 objekata regionalnog značaja, 4 objekta nacionalnog značaja i 1 objekat međunarodnog značaja).Osnovni motiv za izradu ove doktorske disertacije je da se Golija - ekološki krov Srbije i Pešter - najveća visoravan na Balkanu, sa izuzetnim prirodnim vrednostim,a kao i kulturno - istorijskim, predstavi široj stručnoj, kulturnoj i turističkoj javnosti kao veliki prirodni, ekološko-turistički i privredni potencijal, ne samo nacionalnog, već i međunarodnog značaja. The geosites were registered, interpreted, evaluated and categorized, recommendations about promotion of the geosites were given and, finally, suggestions about updating the inventory of Serbian geoheritage sites were made.Geological properties (rock type, age, fossil content, morphological and hydrogeological characteristics, etc.) of rocksat different localities on Golija Mt. and Pešter plateau were studied during the last four years, which enabled systematic and complex classification of geosites in terms of geoheritage. Thirteen potential geosites were selected (1 geosite of local importance, 8 geosites of regional importance and 3 geosites of national importance). This study will suggest an inventory of geosites in this area with a special focus on geoconservation measures. One of the main goals is also the modification of existing and the creation of new methods for geosite evaluation. By using these methods, along with a detailed survey research and analysis, the main goal is to determine the most attractive areas and geosites for geotourism development on the territory of the Middle and Lower Danube in Serbia and also to determine the basic characteristics and preferences of the potential geotourism market of Serbia

На територији Подунавља у Србији налазе се бројни геолошки и геоморфолошки облици као и палеонтолошки остаци мамута који представљају јединствено богатсво и као такви представљају идеалне ресурсе за развој туризма. Predmet istraživanja su antropogeni reljefni oblici, odnosno antropogeni geomorfolokaliteti koji su rezultat djelatnosti rudarstva ugljena tijekom XIX. i XX. stoljeća na širem prostoru Murskoga Središća. Nakon inventarizacije geomorfolokaliteta izvršena je njihova evaluacija kroz utvrđivanje znanstvene, ekološke, kulturne, socioekonomske, edukacijske i geokonzervacijske vrijednosti, odnosno ukupne postojeće vrijednosti. Kvantitativna evaluacija geomorfolokaliteta obuhvaća i procjenu njihove potencijalne geoedukacijske i geoturističke vrijednosti te geokonzervacijskih potreba. Evaluacijom je utvrđeno da su istraživani antropogeni reljefni oblici, halde i iskopi, rudarska geobaština i čine prostor jedinstvenog kulturnog krajobraza u Republici Hrvatskoj kojeg je potrebno zaštititi. Predviđena je zaštita u kategoriji V prema IUCN-u. Također, utvrđeno je da je rudarska geobaština značajan turistički resurs područja putem kojeg je moguće utjecati na razvoj određenih selektivnih oblika turizma, prvenstveno geoturizma, te na taj način omogućiti održivi razvoj područja ne ugrožavajući njegove vrijednosti već naprotiv, kroz turizam doprinijeti njihovu očuvanju. Nezamjenjivu ulogu u geokonzervaciji, geoedukaciji i razvoju geoturizma istraživanog područja ima interpretacija. Utvrđen je interpretacijski plan rudarske geobaštine koji obuhvaća razmatranje posjetitelja područja, definiranje resursa za interpretaciju, razvoj tema, utvrđivanje metoda interpretacije i medija te upute za implementaciju. The subject of thesis research are anthropogenic land terrain formations recognized as anthropogenic geomorphological features created by coal mining activities during 19th and 20th century, over the municipal area of Town of Mursko Središće in Croatia. After the introduction of possible geomorphological features, the evaluation of their scientific, ecological, cultural, socioeconomic, educational and geoconservational values was performed. Quantitative evaluation of selected geomorphological features included the estimation of their geoeducational and geotouristic potential values as well as geoconservational needs. Through the evaluation of geomorphological features - the piles of waste material called halde and coal excavation sites - it was determined that those features represents coal mining geoheritage and thus make the area of unique cultural landscape in the Republic of Croatia in the need of conservation. The legal conservation in IUCN category V is anticipated to be appropriate. Furthermore, it is concluded that coal mining geoheritage represents significant tourist resource in the research area. By this resource it is possible to make positive influence on development of specific selective forms of tourism, primarily the geotourism, and ensure the sustainable development of the research area without compromising its basic values. Specific forms of tourism can contribute to long-term conservation of researched geomorphological features. The conclusions and interpretations have the crucial role in geoconservation, geoeducation and in development of geotourism of research area. The interpretation plan of coal mining geoheritage was developed within this thesis and it includes the visitor analysis, recognition of resources for interpretation, development of topics for interpretation, defined methods of interpretation, media for interpretation and instructions for implementation of interpretation.

Poslednjih godina pojam geodiverziteta i geonasleđa dobija sve značajniju ulogu u oblasti fundamentalnihistraživanja, zaštite prirode i turizma. Iako uglavnom ravničarskog karaktera, geodiverzitet Vojvodine pre dstavljaznačajnu komponentu geonasleđa čitave Srbije. Njene geološke, pedološke, pa čak i geomorfološke vrednostipredstavljaju potencijalno područje za razvoj geoturizma. Ova studija daće detaljan prikaz dosadašnjih istraživanja ikonceptualizacije svih relevantnih pojmova vezanih za geodiverzitet i geonasleđe. Takođe će ovom studijom bitipredložen detaljan inventar postojećeg i potencijalnog geonasleđa Vojvodine kao i model evaluacije geolokaliteta.Ukazaće se na vrednosti i pretnje po ovaj prirodni segment, a potom i nedostatke i mogućnosti aktivne zaštitegeonasleđa kroz turizam. Pored toga, anketnim isrtaživanjem će se pokušati utvrditi socio -demografski profil, ali ipredložiti moderan vid promocije., In recent years the concept of geoheritage gains more important role in the field of fundamental researches,nature conservation and tourism. Although mostly characterized by flat landscape, geodiversity of Vojvodinarepresents significant part of Serbian geoheritage. Its geological, pedological, and even geomorphologicalcharacteristics, with implementation of certain geoconservation tools, present potential areas for developinggeotourism. This study will provide detailed insight into research in this field, with determination andconceptualization of all relevant and related terminology which is done for the first time in our country on this level.Also, author will propose detailed inventory of existing and potential geoheritage of Vojvodina, with addition ofpreliminary evaluation model of geosites. Furthermore, it will elaborate all values and threats of and for this naturalsegment, and thus point out all weaknesses and possibilities of active conservation of geoheritage through tourism.Finally, conducted survey will determine some statistical indications of possible geotourists in Vojvodina region andpropose contemporary and efficient form of its promotion.

Poslednjih godina pojam geodiverziteta i geonasleđa dobija sve značajniju ulogu u oblasti fundamentalnihistraživanja, zaštite prirode i turizma. Iako uglavnom ravničarskog karaktera, geodiverzitet Vojvodine pre dstavljaznačajnu komponentu geonasleđa čitave Srbije. Njene geološke, pedološke, pa čak i geomorfološke vrednostipredstavljaju potencijalno područje za razvoj geoturizma. Ova studija daće detaljan prikaz dosadašnjih istraživanja ikonceptualizacije svih relevantnih pojmova vezanih za geodiverzitet i geonasleđe. Takođe će ovom studijom bitipredložen detaljan inventar postojećeg i potencijalnog geonasleđa Vojvodine kao i model evaluacije geolokaliteta.Ukazaće se na vrednosti i pretnje po ovaj prirodni segment, a potom i nedostatke i mogućnosti aktivne zaštitegeonasleđa kroz turizam. U sklopu održivog razvoja prostora geomorfološka raznolikost postaje sve značajniji resurs. Geomorfološki lokaliteti mjesta su istaknute znanstvene, edukativne, ekonomske, kulturne i ekološke vrijednosti te predstavljaju resurse koji, međutim, često nisu adekvatno ili uopće iskorišteni u razvoju prostora u kojem se nalaze. Budući da se Park-šuma Jankovac na Papuku, koja je zaštićena zbog velike bioraznolikosti, odlikuje i iznimnom geomorfološkom raznolikošću, u ovom se radu utvrđuje intrinzična i upotrebna vrijednost njenih geomorfoloških lokaliteta kao i potreba za njihovom zaštitom. Metodološki okvir obuhvaća inventarizaciju, procjenu statusa geomorfolokaliteta i geomorfološkog resursa za korištenje u geoedukacijske i geoturističke svrhe. Evaluacijom je izdvojeno osam geomorfoloških lokaliteta velike postojeće i upotrebne (geoturističke i geoedukacijske) vrijednosti koji predstavljaju važan resurs za održiv socioekonomski razvoj lokalne i regionalne zajednice. Geomorphological diversity is becoming a resource of sustainable development all around the world. Geomorphological sites are places of exceptional scientific, educative, economic, cultural and ecological values and represent resources that often are neither adequately nor even at all utilized in development of region in which they are located. Although Park-forest Jankovac on Papuk Mts. is protected because of its great biodiversity, it is also characterized by exceptional geomorphological diversity. Thus, this thesis attempts to determine intrinsic and use value of its geomorphological sites as well as their need for protection. Methodological framework includes inventory, geomorphosite status assessment and evaluation of geomorphological resource for geoeducational and geotouristic purposes. Evaluation has established eight geomorphological sites of great existing and geoeducational and geotouristic value that represent important resources for sustainable socio-economic development of local and regional community.

U radu su prikazani preliminarni rezultati istraživanja eocenskih naslaga na području Imotske krajine i susjednog dijela Hercegovine. Na lokalitetima Ričice (Hrvatska) i Tribistovo (Hercegovina) pronađeni su brojni i raznoliki fosili mekušaca (puževi i školjkaši), koralja, foraminifera, ježinaca i briozoja. Obilno kalcificirani skeleti i velike dimenzije pojedinih mekušaca karakteristični su za topla šelfna područja tijekom paleocenskog/eocenskog termalnog maksimuma, a nađeni fosili pripadaju Zapadnotetijskoj bioprovinciji. Među najvećim mekušcima ističe se Campanile gigantea LAMARCK, najveći ikad živući puž i krupni školjkaši - lucine. Veliki fosili, nalik predimenzioniranim današnjim mekušcima, prepoznatljivi su i izvan geološkog kruga, pa ove fosiliferne naslage imaju veliki geoturistički potencijal. Detaljne analize nađene faune su u tijeku. Komparacija sa sličnim susjednim lokalitetima omogućit će rekonstrukciju paleogeografije šireg područja, a najzanimljiviji lokaliteti bi u budućnosti bili označeni informativnim tablama i povezani poučnim stazama.

Predmet istraživanja ovog diplomskog rada je geološka baština Republike Hrvatske i njena promocija. Prikazana je važnost geoturizma i geoparkova radi promicanja geobaštine, a u svrhu zaštite prirode i okoliša s ciljem održivog razvoja. Prikupljeni su podaci o promociji geološke baštine diljem Republike Hrvatske. Definirane su smjernice za izradu poučne geološke staze i prateće brošure u svrhu stvaranja jedinstvenog pristupa planiranju i izvedbi poučnih geoloških staza za potrebe javnih ustanova za upravljanje zaštićenim prirodnim vrijednostima u Republici Hrvatskoj. Na temelju definiranih smjernica dan je osvrt na odabrane i posjećene poučne staze Republike Hrvatske.

Krapina-Zagorje county participates partly on the Croatian tourist market. Selective forms of tourism based on natural resources, as well as selective types of tourism in general, must be in the future much more validated. Health tourism is today the most developed form of tourism in the Krapina-Zagorje county. With further development of health tourism, the studied area has good potential for the development of mountain tourism, ecotourism, geotourism and caving tourism. Also, natural tourist attractions should be linked with cultural heritage and be placed together on the tourist market. Krapina-Zagorje county participates partly on the Croatian tourist market. Park prirode Papuk smješten je u istočnoj Hrvatskoj, u središnjem dijelu Slavonije. Na površini od 336 četvornih kilometara Park prirode Papuk obiluje geološkim, botaničkim, povijesnim i arheološkim zanimljivostima. Papuk je geološki najraznovrsnija planina u Hrvatskoj – izgrađuju je sedimentne, metamorfne i magmatske stijene u starosnom rasponu od 350 milijuna godina. Mreža europskih geoparkova osnovana je u lipnju 2000. godine s ciljem zaštite georaznolikosti, promicanja geološke baštine u javnosti i podupiranja održivog ekonomskog razvoja područja geoparkova prvenstveno kroz razvoj geoturizma. Trenutno broji 30 geoparkova iz 12 europskih država. Nastojanja i potreba da se zaštiti prirodna baština i da se promoviraju geološke osobitosti Papuka motivirali su razne stručnjake i renđere parka da upute Mreži europskih geoparkova, sa sjedištem u Francuskoj, zahtjev za primanjem Parka prirode Papuk u Mrežu europskih geoparkova. U zahtjevu je navedeno 69 geološki značajnih lokaliteta. Park prirode Papuk bi mogao postati 31. europski, prvi naš geopark i ujedno i prvi na prostoru između Njemačke i Grčke.

The project of the Island of Rab Geopark is a joint venture of the Municipality of Rab, the Department of Geology of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb and the ProGEO Croatia. The idea of geopark was presented to the local community as a new approach to the nature conservation and sustainable development, based on evaluation of the geoheritage and its usage in prolongation of the tourist season and enrichment of the tourist offer. The Island of Rab is located in northern Adriatic Sea, Croatia: It has nearly 100 km2 and a population of ca. 9000. The island infrastructure is well developed, the cultural heritage is very rich, and the island has a long tradition in tourism. Its geological diversity, as well as excellent exposures makes it unique in the Adriatic Sea. The first task we undertook was evaluation of the Island of Rab geoheritage, and the second was finding the way to promote the value of geoheritage and importance of its conservation to the local community. In this process, we organized several public lectures, visited local schools and put up the exposition of geological art photography with local motifs. We also committed ourselves to promote the island's geoheritage by organizing field-trips for attendees of various conferences and workshops, AMAC-groups and students of geology. Excellent logistics, as well as close and easily accessible outcrops were beneficial for several training courses organised for petroleum industry specialists, and we also plan to organize several field courses in geology of sedimentary rocks which would take full advantage of the island's geoheritage. Although the local communities widely accepted the idea of geopark on the island, they were also concerned because of the restrictions which are imposed by administrative protection under the Croatian Law on Nature Protection. According to the Law, every geosite or geologically valuable area should be under state protection, which restricts the land use and even its scientific research, but means very little if local population does not protect the site physically. The protected sites in Croatia are being managed by the Public Institution for Managing Protected Areas of Nature (PI) which is funded by the state budget. Since the most important goal of a geopark is to contribute to the sustainable development, its first communal benefits should be the extension of tourism, enhanced self-employment of the local population, and new job opportunities for young people. To counterbalance the scepticism, we have decided to put more effort in education of the local population, so they will understand the reasons why should they protect a geosite, especially if it is located on their property, and the benefit would be their self-employment. If the one can earn money by protecting and cleaning a geosite, showing it to tourists, and making local souvenirs, it will be most beneficial for the conservation of geoheritage. The PI for the Island of Rab is located in the city of Rijeka on the mainland, 110 km away, and we believe the only efficient protection can be on the local basis. Moreover, there is no reason why every geosite or geologically valuable area should be under state protection, which is underfunded even for the already protected sites. Therefore, we envisage organisation of the Rab Geopark as an organization which must have managements rules, and life-long education programme for the local people. So far, there are over hundred geosites registered on the Island of Rab and described in a digital data base according to the ProGEO instructions. The categories we used are: “ geosite” , “ geotrail” and “ geogarden” , which all form the “ geopark” . The evaluation of a particular geosite in terms of scientific, cultural, historical or aesthetic value is still in process. Two geotrails (Premužićeva 1 and Premužićeva 2), out of 10 planned are in final state of preparation, and the explanation plates are quadrilingual (Croatian, English, German, Italian) by demand from the local tourist community.
