This brief response raises a few key questions emerging from Suraj Yengde's lecture and suggests a critical direction they can be steered towards. It considers in what sense caste may deserve an epistemology of its own. It suggests that we must look at what is at stake in answering the conundrum of which framework to use as primary, though a comparison between anti-racism and anti-casteism is preferable to one between race and caste. A continuing challenge is to bear witness to the experience of the subordinated. What is at stake is the intellectual and political consensus necessary to move towards action – to bring about an institutional or social change. Therefore, what is at stake is the power of the concepts deployed to communicate with and convince agents of change, principally, the activists. During these trying times, revisiting conceptual histories to provide a fresh perspective is immensely challenging; Suraj Yengde has done well to bravely undertake this challenge. When we ask people to tell us the story of their lives, it is not the full extent of their biographies that we have access to, but only a partial version of it. Biographical narratives are permeated by processes of selection that imply highlighting some things while omitting others. Most of the time, what is left unsaid cannot be fully acknowledged, precisely because it is not explicitly verbalised. In the scope of the research project Biographical echoes, we were able to identify significant events and relationships in a person's life that were not disclosed in autobiographical accounts but were unveiled in hetero-biographical ones by close people who were interviewed about that person's life. The triangulation of data allowed us to access elements of a biography that would otherwise have remained unseen. By taking omissions as units of analysis, we characterised their main features and identified three distinct profiles of omissions using a Multiple Correspondence Analysis: relational, light and taboo. We argue that the act of omitting something is a meaningful social action with implications at both the biographical and analytical levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RACIALIZATION , *MUSLIMS , *RESEARCH personnel , *FIELD research , *RADICALISM - Abstract
Sociologists have studied the causes and consequences of collectively blaming and negatively portraying Muslims, but less attention has been paid to how collective blaming and negative descriptions affect researchers' categorisations of such vilified groups. Drawing on 22 months of fieldwork with Muslim men in Norway, I elucidate how racialisation can influence interactions in field research when studying a controversial subject with a racialised group. I identify three patterns in which racialisation affects field interactions: accepting a racialising view, defending the racialised group and developing a shared story between a researcher and participants. I argue that, in this case, desires to present positive views of Islam and Muslims, attempts to distance oneself from religious extremism and attempts to categorise radicalised Muslims as neither Norwegians nor Muslims illustrate racialisation's influence. My findings suggest that racialised understandings enter field interactions but remain opaque unless the researcher reflects upon their own and participants' positionality and membership in a racialised group. I conclude that shared experiences of racialisation between a researcher and the participants deepen the researcher's understanding while limiting enquiry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LGBTQ+ people , *SEXUAL orientation , *CROSS-cultural differences , *GENDER identity , *CLINICAL trials - Abstract
In at least 67 countries, LGBTQ+ individuals face discrimination and persecution due to their sexual and gender identity. For this reason, some decide to leave their countries of origin to escape violence and to seek better living conditions. Regardless of their reasons for migration, it significantly impacts the expression of their sexual orientation and gender identity. Once they arrive in the host country, they often experience other forms of hardship or violence due to socio-cultural differences, the perception of otherness, and hosting conditions. These factors can have either a positive or a negative impact on their identities. In this context, migration leads to a process of questioning and reconstruction of identity, which needs to be understood in all its complexity if we are to adequately meet their needs for psychosocial support. To gain a better understanding of the impact of migration on the identities of LGBTQ+ migrants, we have based our study on the concepts of the Dialogical Self proposed by H. Hermans, and those of Intersectionality developed by K. Crenshaw. On the one hand, the Dialogical Self depicts identity as a dynamic ensemble of relational Self "voices" that can change, be challenged or reinforced based on time and context, allowing for the development of a complex and harmonious perception of the Self. On the other hand, Intersectionality underscores how different systems of oppression operate to create novel experiences for individuals with multiple marginalized identities. Taking into account the complex and multiple identities that engage in dialogue and that intersect with each other seems to us to be essential for the elaboration of a more decentralized and well-founded clinical and psychosocial approach. GENDER transition , *GENDER identity , *SOCIAL networks , *GENDER dysphoria - Abstract
Any clinician cannot fail to wonder about the notion of "gender dysphoria" as a disease or as a disorder. The review of the few international epidemiological studies on gender transition requests leads to an attempt to "decipher" the reasons for the exponential growth of this new clinical category. Is it a psychopathological or a social phenomenon, or both? We will examine separately the cases of children and adolescents. Children experiencing hesitations about their sexual identity tend to give up requests for transitions; as for teenagers (12 girls for every boy), they seem to be largely influenced by social networks. We will position ourselves strictly on the clinical and deontological level, to defend medical ethics, at a distance from the ideological considerations disseminated by the media. Starting from the recognition of the very strong increase in France of requests to "change sex/gender" in children and adolescents in recent years, we will note that this claim of "gender dysphoria" is presented differently by children before and after puberty. From a clinical point of view, it is necessary to understand that gender dysphoria would be the result of different identification processes for children and adolescents; it also presents as a gendered behavior like other known behavioral disorders in adolescence. The objective of this article is therefore to decipher this pandemic phenomenon and to question it as a social rather than a medical phenomenon. We must then recommend great caution in medical procedures, sometimes irreversible, on these children. Based on an analysis of the international literature, we focused on international epidemiological studies and on the scarce data available to us in France. We compare these data with those from testimonies of adolescents in the process of "identity transition" or "detransition" in France and in other countries, because the complaints and claims are identical. These data were collected and studied until the end of 2021. These data and testimonies will be confronted with our knowledge in the domain of child and adolescent psychiatry and psychoanalysis, the latter being a theoretical construction of childhood sexuality. The results drawn from the analysis of these testimonies and from existing epidemiological studies show, firstly, that a fundamental distinction must be made between the phenomenon of "gender dysphoria" in children and in adolescents. The evolution of the demands is drastically different in terms of volume and environmental causality. Secondly, in adolescence, this demand for a change of identity indisputably concerns a very large majority of girls. Finally, this demand, therefore sexualized, can be seen as a fragile identity, added to other pathologies. It should also be considered with demands regarding identity and the impact of propaganda on social networks towards youth. These new demands for changes in gender identity should be discussed before administering lifelong medical and surgical treatments that have not proven their effectiveness and harmlessness, as is the case in Sweden and the U.K. Our discussion here focuses on some clinical and epidemiological elements that allow us to consider these new demands for recognition of "gender dysphoria" from adolescents as a "social epidemic" phenomenon. We will discuss the notion of gender and identification in children and adolescents, along with the frequent and worrying "associated disorders." A reflection on the particular question of the body will lead us to question the refusal of the feminine in the 21st century. we will also consider the impact of the choice of treatment and support provided, before concluding with a reflection on the requests of adolescent girls. We recall the importance of providing global psychological, psychodynamic, and psychiatric care for all these children. We recommend acting with the necessary prudence and ethics at these stages of life, and we defend the necessity for all children to develop thanks to the normal evolution of their chosen identifications. The diagnosis of "gender dysphoria" should not be understood as a diagnosis that would bind the child or adolescent in a gender (whether desired or not, conversion therapy is now forbidden in France), but, on the contrary, should allow the child or adolescent to be accompanied towards an emancipation in the face of these gender stereotypes in which he or she is most often trapped, or even kidnapped. Because the body is not sick, it is necessary to protect it against any deleterious transformation. But above all, by avoiding any stigmatization of identity, we can allow the child as well as the adolescent to reappropriate the image of her/his body and thus a psychic and anatomical unity. To thus preserve the freedom of choice amongst the multiple adult sexualities with which s/he will have to deal later on. It is obviously for lack of this protective psychological accompaniment that these young people prematurely put an end to any genital sexual life (homo- or heterosexual or other). - Abstract
This article explores the potential of Okanagan Valley as a place of distinctive wines and the tourism experiences that match these wines. By "distinctive" I mean wines with a sense of place woven into their production and marketing—wines that are called "terroir‐driven" in the wine world. My focus is not on wine production, but on place‐making and regional planning. The article is informed by geographical and sociological work on wine, but it accentuates the empirical over the conceptual to explore the long‐term potential of the Okanagan as a wine destination. Methodologically, the paper synthesizes academic and trade sources with primary fieldwork material, including participant observation in the region and interviews with wine professionals in British Columbia. It contributes to the efforts to forge an authentic narrative for the Okanagan as a place of wine. Key messages: Okanagan Valley has high potential for place‐driven wines and the tourism experiences that match these wines. This potential can be cultivated by linking wine to place through collective narratives and regulatory measures. The experience of Europe's premium wine regions can be used to craft such narratives and measures in the Okanagan. The linguistic diversity of France is a highly discussed topic, particularly in relation to the French state's (lack of) support for regional and minority languages (RMLs). There are approximately 200,000 speakers of the regional language Breton, while Arabic is the second-most widely spoken language in France with an estimated 3–4 million speakers. Recent studies have called for comparative analyses and this research seeks to fill this gap, focusing on individual speakers and their social experiences as they relate to language(s), diversity, and identity. This paper discusses findings of fieldwork conducted in Brittany with Breton and Arabic language users, examining how Breton and Arabic language users describe their language experiences, and how identity can be shaped by language practices. This research also explores how such language practices relate to diversity and multilingualism across France more broadly, and how individuals understand the multifaceted nature of identity using terms such as 'double culture' and 'mélange'. Both a child of the century and a harsh critic of his time, Charles Baudelaire remained deeply marked by his « tyranny of intimacy » (Richard Sennett's expression), and in a way contributed himself to its expansion, but at the same time kept a distance from the culture of intimacy that took hold with the advent of Romanticism. In our paper, we shall try to grasp the link between intimacy and modernity, to see how the tension between the two constructs both individual and collective identity. We will examine the poetùs letters, diaries and poems, both prose and verse, including two « intimate » poems from The Flowers of Evil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BRONZE Age , *ELEMENTAL diet , *COPPER ores , *COMMODITY exchanges , *CURRENT awareness services , *SOCIAL role , *SOCIAL control - Abstract
Baltic amber is often considered the principal Scandinavian commodity exchanged for metal from ore-rich regions in Europe. If correct, this may explain the astonishing metal wealth of the Nordic Bronze Age and the modest social consumption of amber locally. The hypothesis of a metal-for-amber principle behind the trade is here for the first time assessed on scales from micro to macro. Amber finds were charted across Europe, and the result was then compared to evidence for regular shifts in copper ore preferences/availability, as found in the systematically changing isotopic/elemental composition of Nordic metal objects in c. 2100–1200 BC. Comparisons indicate that amber and metal followed similar spatiotemporal trajectories with major reorganizations at the turn from the Early to the Middle Bronze Age. Shifts in amber distribution correlate with the geography of metal sources used in both periods and flows of metal to Scandinavia and amber to Europe appear to be contingent even in subperiods. Major European amber tracks – and the crossroads hubs controlling them – were identified for the transfer of goods, yet again revealing major changes at the transition to the Middle Bronze Age. The social roles and meanings of amber among Nordic communities were likewise examined, suggesting that bearers of amber played a role in exercising social control of this resource. It is concluded that amber almost certainly was exchanged for metal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"Self-help" refers to a heterogeneous collection of syncretic knowledge, delivered in the form of books, videos or training courses. This content is sought after by many people whose obvious objective is the quest for an authentic self, in a society where identity supports are wavering. In addition to being a critical consideration, our study aims to better understand the motivations of those who invest in this knowledge and who feed their preferences for these non-conventional approaches. Within the framework of a literature review in the form of clinical anthropology, three clinical vignettes are presented, based on clinical research interviews conducted with volunteers engaged in a personal development process. One of the participants is involved in a practice that includes two mentors; another pursues only a reflective approach nourished by his readings; and the last one supplements his readings with psychological consultations. All of them pursue a desire for inner transformation in connection with a questioning of identity. Reading such works can promote forms of symbolization mediated by reading. The first vignette provides a clinical illustration of the concept of "apérité" developed by Nicolas Marquis. It demonstrates that the possibility for the subject to identify himself with the contents of the self-help book, which allows him to develop new representations, linked to his personal life history, thereby helping him to move towards a clearer representation of his internal world and the functioning of his identity. The second subject is more motivated by the hope of the existence of an ideal of life that he could implement with the help of the concrete application of certain key factors. He is trying to rebound from a complex family situation that has pushed him to break with his family. By adopting a self-help approach, he is attempting to find the support and backing that he did not have in his family environment. The identification with mentors constitutes a support comparable to a religious precept. The practice of mentoring embodies a real system of reference and support in the life of the third subject interviewed. Over time, this practice enabled him to establish a new relationship with his parents and to gradually emancipate himself. The mentor is often assigned to accompany the individual in the development of a mindset that favors his or her empowerment. This practice also underpins a path towards self-awareness, by inviting the subject to consciously reconnect with his internal world and the different sensations that run through it at various moments of daily life. From the perspective of the participants in the study, personal development stimulates a self-therapeutic work whose limits are exceeded by a gradual openness towards another, in a process of therapeutic pre-commitment. If it is possible to locate the coordinates of the current tendency to strive for personal development in certain mutations of the social bond, it seems necessary to develop a careful and rigorous approach to this form of therapeutic pluralism sought out by a portion of the general population. - Abstract
Very often nowdays we are exposed to different kinds of diffuse traumatism more than to well defined traumatic events, with deep consequences on both individual and collective structures. In these situations it’s very difficult working through the traumatic experiences just because they become really uncanny, crossing the border between familiar and unfamiliar. Starting from Freud’s works on trauma and the uncanny, we examine the subjectivation’s pathways in our times, their specific difficulties in recognizing the Other and their need of resorting to various kinds of “doubles”, which are always really uncanny. This study examined news images and captions published by The Associated Press (N = 7,455) between 2018 and 2022 to ascertain whether names were more frequently included for certain groups of people. The analysis found that people depicted in the Global North are named far more frequently than in the Global South, and that sports, entertainment, and political images include names more often than news and feature images. These pervasive patterns suggest naming has a discursive function that constructs an Other by excluding familial and cultural connotations inherent in names, forming a hierarchy through opposition, and extending social prominence for certain groups. PATHOLOGICAL psychology , *SOCIAL isolation , *PSYCHOLOGICAL vulnerability , *NARCISSISM , *BORDERLINE personality disorder - Abstract
The aim of this article is to re-examine the concept of ego splitting proposed by R. Roussillon in the psychopathological and psychoanalytical fields, based on a clinical case of a teenage hikikomori. In a conceptual approach, our article addresses a specific form of splitting which, beyond a vision, only focuses on its defensive and deficient aspects, can also be understood as a first form of self-appropriation. It then becomes a part of a process of identity construction. Based on a qualitative analysis of several clinical interviews with an adolescent, this article aims to demonstrate the extent to which the therapeutic encounter setting in a Care Center, with the support of virtual mediation, can allow for the reappropriation of some parts of the self that were initially split off. Additionally, a conceptual exploration of ego splitting, notably through the notion of verwerfung as well as the reading of a profound splitting proposed by S. Ferenczi, allows us to better understand its manifestations, depending on whether it is seen as a developmental need or a psychopathological disorder. The developmental stakes associated with ego splitting in adolescents are multiple. Sometimes very similar to a peritraumatic dissociation , ego splitting illustrates the subject's defenses when faced with an event which the psyche cannot deal with, and thus severs an entire part of his subjectivity. It is also about the experience of the newly pubescent body and the adolescent's rejection of it, which was emphasized in the concept of developmental breakdown. Finally, it can lead to a form of withdrawal or social isolation such as with the hikikomori disorder, and certainly other outcomes depending on the subject's evolution. In all cases, this evolution remains uncertain. If different forms of psychopathology can manifest themselves, ego splitting however can signify a form of self-immersion, in an attempt to reappropriate certain painful or unsymbolized elements from his past history. There is a type of splitting, which is not only a defense that can lead to feelings of fragmentation and derealization in the worst-case scenarios. It can also be inscribed in the borderline process of identity construction, a form of temporary dissociation of the patient, or schize , allowing parts of the self to return in a sort of retroactive loop, as an informer of the current state of the ego. In adolescence, this process is particularly active, due to the integration of the newly pubescent body. Either the subject, depending on his psychoaffective maturation, will enquire about the ongoing processes in progress in his inner world (his phantasmatic life, integration of the sexual body, etc.); or the splitting reduction takes place through a receptive and transformational function of the object, aligning this process with a form of "crossed" intersubjectivity. Thinking about the subject, especially during in his teenage years, as he encounters forms of dissociations which are not only the expression of a vulnerability, allows us to maintain a clinical vision which supports a potential for growth, a resilient capacity of the ego. The way we consider different outcomes of ego splitting in this article supports a dynamic approach of the psychological functioning, which places the subject in a continuum between what is normal and what is pathological. Splitting of the ego, as a borderline process, allows for a different reading of the underlying stakes of the contemporary expression of narcissistic and identity-related suffering. It also gives a dynamic perspective to what is usually a nosographic approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CHRONIC diseases - Abstract
being diagnosed with a disease is like being thrust onto a new path, a biographical bifurcation akin to a mourning process, bringing in its wake a shattering of the social self. The passage from an ideal of perfect health to a state of illness introduces various fractures into the individual's life course, leading to a process of biographization. To illustrate this, the life story of a diabetic person is used to analyze various biographical turning points. The analysis of the subjectivation process highlights different reconstructions of the self through the experience of therapeutic education, seen as a relational space of in-between identities. WOMEN military personnel , *SOCIAL influence , *MODERN society , *SIXTEENTH century , *MODELS (Persons) , *GENDER stereotypes - Abstract
This text investigates how certain exceptional actions carried out by women in the military sphere during the conquest of America in the 16th century were documented, interpreted, and narrated by witnesses and chroniclers. These accounts were influenced by gender archetypes and stereotypes shaped and influenced by the prevailing social, religious, moral, and cultural conventions of that period. The article analyzes some paradigmatic cases from the early Peruvian viceroyalty. This analysis is conducted from a gender perspective that enables the examination of aspects such as female models transferred to the New World and the consideration of the actions of some women in frontier territories, where various factors allowed for, and even demanded, roles far removed from the norms of Early Modern society.
