The purpose of this paper was to discuss the collaborative initiative between the Mona Library (ML) and the Library and Information Association of Jamaica (LIAJA) focused on digitizing the Association's peer-reviewed publications, specifically the Jamaica Library Association (JLA) Bulletin and the LIAJA Bulletin, for enhanced access and preservation. The paper also addressed the compilation of a second index for the LIAJA Bulletin, covering the period from 2007 to its electronic publication in 2014. This second index was intended to complement the first index, which was compiled from 1950 to 2006. This collaborative project presented numerous challenges and benefits, offering valuable insights for future initiatives. Key benefits for the library included the enhancement of staff competencies, strengthening of institutional reputation, increased growth and visibility, and the preservation of Jamaican and Caribbean librarians' scholarly output for future generations. Legislation pertaining to public libraries is a helpful instrument for attaining state-mandated library services, financial support, resource and network sharing among libraries, and administrative effectiveness. In order to better understand the history of Public Libraries Acts in the Southern Indian states, this paper looks at a number of public library development aspects. Another focal point of the study is a comparative analysis of the provision of involvement of Local Library Authorities as well as their role and governance model in the Southern Indian states of India. The current work is based on data gathered from primary and secondary sources. To study the Public Libraries Acts of the southern states of India, the respective state government’s gazetteer notification and website of RRRLF were used as sources for data collection. The study has extensively analyzed the Local Library Authorities of Public Libraries Acts of South Indian States and made a comparative study among the different elements of the Local Library Authorities of the Public Libraries Acts. The study finds out that Kerala state has taken several distinctive steps in the development of its Local Library Authorities, including the establishment of block-level libraries. The study reveals that the local community and the Local Library Authorities have a tight relationship and are mutually fulfilling their objectives. Despite having sufficient provision for engagement of Local Library Authorities in the Public Libraries Act of the southern states, there is still debate about the proper implementation of the Acts.

This study assessed the contribution of the Tanzania Library Association in Enhancing the Librarianship Profession: Views from Under 40-Year-Olds librarians were gathered. The study adopted a quantitative approach with a case study design. Thirty-six respondents purposively selected from the Tanzania Librarian Forum and the Tanzania Library Association were involved in this study. Data were collected through a questionnaire created using a Google form. The questionnaire was shared with respondents and remained active for 2 weeks to allow them to fill it in. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Service Solutions (SPSS) Version 23 computer programme. The study found that 47.2% of participants were very familiar with TLA, which suggests that a substantial portion of the participants strongly understand the Tanzania Library and Information Association (TLA) and its objectives. Regarding the perceived contribution of TLA in advancing professional development opportunities for librarians under 40, results demonstrated that a majority, comprising 24 respondents (66.7%), agreed that TLA indeed fosters such opportunities. Furthermore, 41.7% reported that TLA enhances networking platforms for librarians under 40. However, another 30.6% said that TLA was essential in addressing the ever-evolving needs and issues faced by librarians under 40. Professional associations are vital for the career development of their members, and TLA is not left behind. From the findings, the study recommends that TLA continues to foster development in its members by utilising different strategies like preparation and conducting continuous professional training courses for its members and the library profession at large, publicity among different institutions within and outside the country and forging links with other international information professional associations. 2022 fand in der Schweiz erstmals das BiblioWeekend statt; ein Wochenende der offenen Bibliotheken. Treibende Kraft der jährlich wiederkehrenden Kampagne ist der noch junge Bibliotheksverband Bibliosuisse, der mit dem „BiblioWeekend" ein öffentlichkeitswirksames Zeichen setzt. Der Artikel beleuchtet zunächst die Ausgangslage und Besonderheiten einer Bibliothekslandschaft, die von der Dreisprachigkeit des Landes geprägt ist. Aufgezeigt werden dann der Organisationsaufbau und die Mitgliederpartizipation als wesentliche Leitlinie im Kampagnenprozess. Die Autorinnen berichten über die Durchführung der Premiere im März 2022 und setzen sich anschließend mit den lessons learned auseinander. Aufgegriffen wird auch die Frage nach dem Mehrwert der Kampagne für den Bibliotheksverband. Der Artikel schließt mit einem Ausblick auf die Zukunft des BiblioWeekends. In 2022, the BiblioWeekend took place the first time in Switzerland; a weekend of open libraries. The driving force behind the annually recurring campaign is the emerging Swiss library association Bibliosuisse, which sets a meaningful signal to the public with the "BiblioWeekend". The article first describes the initial situation and the special features of a library landscape that is characterised by the country's trilingualism. It then shows the organisational structure and member participation as an essential guideline in the campaign process. The authors report on the implementation of the premiere in March 2022 and then deal with the lessons learned. Bibliosuisse sees itself as a central player in the I+D education landscape in Switzerland. Together with the Association of Archivists of Switzerland (VSA), it leads the I+D training delegation as the responsible body for basic vocational training, which has just been realigned. Bibliosuisse now wants to coordinate basic training more closely with the bachelor's and master's degree programmes in Information Science. With its own continuing education programme, Bibliosuisse is positioning itself as a practice-oriented provider of courses for employees of public and academic libraries and documentation centres. T. Y. Feng-Chen is the earliest female student of modern library science abroad in the modern China. After returning to China, she devoted herself to librarianship, took charge of various types of libraries, participated actively in the establishment and activities of various library associations, and was one of the pioneers and active promoters of the modern New Library Movement. This paper summarizes her outstanding contributions in expanding library education function, attaching importance to library talent training, innovating Chinese cataloguing method and promoting cultural exchanges between China and the West, so as to provide useful reference for further understanding the professionalization and professional development path of modern Chinese libraries. The role of libraries in preserving the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples is significant and multi-faceted. Libraries build up collections of information resources in indigenous languages, carry out extensive research work, generate bibliographic databases, conduct cultural and educational activities, organize exhibitions. These activities support the preservation and promotion of the local tangible and intangible cultural heritage, the written and spoken indigenous languages. An agreement was reached at the Rio+20 Sustainable Development Conference in 2012 on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which built on and continued the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to address global challenges. The United Nations, in partnership with governments, academics and civil society, conceived the sustainable development framework for the post-2015 period. As a result of this work, on 25 September 2015, the 193 member states of the United Nations accepted a set of 17 goals and the set of proposals for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) has always had a strong strategic focus on international cultural policy, the formulation of sectoral policies and their adaptation to the library sector. An obvious area of library advocacy is cooperation with world organisations that have a global impact on our societies, with a comprehensive agenda on issues affecting our planet. So, naturally, even as the new UN global program was taking shape, responsible leaders of the IFLA were already involved in the process, raising awareness of the importance of library support. The aim of IFLA is to ensure that, through advocacy, library associations and organisations, as well as public libraries, should be included in these sustainability development plans at both global and local levels, as institutions to be utilised to achieve the goals and as working partners, and should also appear in the UN voluntary national review materials. This report explored the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA)'s strategic planning process for 2020-2025 during COVID-19. The paper introduced CALA's mission statement, values, and discussed the importance of the strategic plan. A strategic planning task force was formed to create an opportunity for membership input in virtual town hall meetings and surveys. The authors presented a case study on the process of revising a strategic plan and discussed the implementation phases. The Japan Library Association (JLA) was established in 1892 following the establishment of American Library Association (ALA) in 1876, and Library Association (LA, now CILIP) in 1877 in the United Kingdom. JLA has been a leader in forming Japanese librarianship by organizing professional activities such as national conferences, local seminars, and publishing journals and books. This article describes the history and organization of JLA, and how JLA encourages Japanese librarians to develop professional skills.

This article employs Andrew Abbott's ecological theory of professionalization advanced in The System of Professions: An Essay on the Division of Expert Labor. It explores the case of the Library Association (UK), which moved in the 1960s and 1970s toward a fully university-based training and certification system and explores how the LA redefined itself, establishing partial control over some areas claimed by the emerging profession of information science. Planning and implementing online professional development opportunities is challenging but attainable. This paper explains how a group of librarians from different institutions worked to plan, market, implement, and evaluate monthly webinars as well as an inaugural online conference, despite never meeting in person. The web conferences began in-state and grew to include presenters and attendees from across the nation. A review of available web-conferencing technologies will be provided, including free and open-source options. This paper includes details about the planning process, including subcommittee collaborations, social media marketing, and day-of logistics. Information School, popularly known as iSchool, played a vital role in the arena of the Information Science. An information school popularly known as iSchools or iSchool or "School of Information", "Department of Information Studies" and "Information Department" is a nonprofit making university level organization and professional association whose sole objective is to nurture information and technology. iSchools organization, set up in 2005, is a collective effort of iSchools to advance the field of information in the 21st century. Actually information schools refer to the members of the iSchools organization, which is formerly known as iSchools project, governed by the iCaucus (The group of Deans). The group members share their views focusing on the facets of information systems, Library and Information Science, informatics. The paper examines the role of the iSchool in the arena of Information Science. A brief history of iSchool movement is stated here. The paper describes the vision and goals of iSchool. Three major functions of iSchool are also enumerated here. The paper presents a detailed analysis of fifty seven iSchool member institutions and iConference and criteria for membership of iSchool. Purpose – The aim of the study reported in this paper is to evaluate 71 library association web sites using 15 selected Webometric criteria. Design/methodology/approach – The study uses Webometric analysis and ranking based on a scaling method and comparative means analysis (One Way ANOVA), and homogeneous subsets using criteria from SPSS13 and Excel2007. Findings – The majority of library association web sites have "contact us" links, but few have Frequently Answered Questions (FAQ) links. Library association web sites are categorised into three groups: high, medium and low, with significant differences between and within the three groups. A combination of criteria scores and classified groups shows that among the 15 criteria, only four criteria have no significant difference between the three groups and the classified groups are heterogeneous based on 11 criteria. Research limitations/implications – Only 71 library association web sites were analysed is this study. The paper presents the opening speech from the 38th General Conference and Assembly of the Croatian Library Association. Giving a historic overview and presenting the experience of the Croatian Library Association, as well as its contemporary priorities and activities, the paper analyzes the goals and tasks of professional library associations today, in modern society which is going through great changes caused primarily by the new technologies and globalization. Furthermore, it questions which reasons should motivate librarians to engage in the work of professional library associations, in the environment in which the libraries themselves are substantially changing their goals and tasks in order to secure their survival, which was seriously questioned by some recent theories. In the middle of the 1960s, amid concerns about the direction of professional education in Scotland and problems with the number of places available for those to wishing to study librarianship, there emerged a strongly nationalistic debate surrounding proposals to establish a second school of librarianship in Scotland. The process of establishing that second school at Robert Gordon's Institute of Technology in Aberdeen became protracted and fraught with difficulties. It was characterized by disputes and misunderstandings between the Library Association and the Scottish Library Association. Many of these differences of opinion took on a distinctly nationalistic quality and the debate within the library community at the time can be said to offer wider, allegorical lessons for the changing political landscape between Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom. This article outlines this debate, principally from the perspective of the members of Scottish librarianship community. This paper examines the history of the Carnegie Medal, a literary prize awarded annually for an outstanding children's book. During the 1950s and 1960s, Oxford University Press (OUP) dominated the prize, achieving 11 wins and 31 commendations. During this time the Carnegie Medal was often mismanaged. The awarding body was financially insolvent and provided little or no promotion of the winning book. Thus, it fell to the publishers of the winning books to capitalize on the win with their own advertising. There is evidence from the archives that OUP did advertise their winning books through book bands and bookshop displays. The Carnegie Medal, which should have served as a vehicle for raising an author's social, cultural, and economic capital, proved to be a failure for several decades after its inception. This article explores the development of the Raffles Library in Singapore, and the role of its founder, Stamford Raffles, from the early nineteenth through to the mid-twentieth century. Throughout the period 1904 to 1938 about 80 per cent of the library's subscribers were Europeans, mostly of British descent, since the book collection consisted of English books. The article will show how the Raffles Library became a colonial enclave, a reading club, or research library for the elite European community and had an impact on the lives of the British colonies in Singapore. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to provide a flavour of the content of the American Library Association Annual Conference held in Anaheim in June 2008. Design/methodology/approach - This is an outline description of the issues, content, networking, speakers and participants of this conference. Findings - This major conference covered many topical issues and themes, latest trends and research, and leading' edge technology applicable to librarians and information professionals internationally. It facilitated many networking opportunities. Special libraries in Slovenia are organized within their professional association as a Section of Special Libraries of the ZBDS in order to successfully accomplish their mission. They aim at establishing technical cooperation on a national and international level, at earning a proper validation of their work, and at forming new librarian professional profiles that would win general recognition. Permanent education and good public relations are the main strategies to achieve these aims. The author presents a historical overview, current situation and future prospects of the Section of Special Libraries. The contribution is organized as a triptych of periods: 1. This journal now has an ISSN and ISC has become an organisation in liaison with the Library Association. This will allow ISC to: book accommodation at LAHQ at a reduced rate; place news, calendar items and adverts in the LAR; buy LAP publications at a discount; receive copies of LA Council papers; apply for grants of up to £500. ISC has already submitted a funding application to: help pay for this journal; issue a new "Radical Booksellers Directory" and other publications; pay for publicity, travel and other expenses; and subsidise future ISC conferences and events. ISC has become involved in three campaigns recently. One of these is to defend two small bookshops who are threatened with a libel action for stocking ''Searchlight". The second campaign ISC is supporting is to get the LA to establish a Black Library Workers Group with its own funding, conference. newsletter, seats on Council etc. The third ISC campaign is in support of the Muckdonald Two. The continuing McDonalds libel trial is all about the freedom to publish and distribute information about the activities of an unpleasant multinational. There are articles on libraries in China and Vietnam by Kathleen Ladizesky and Len Aldis. These papers were presented at the ISC/ Link conference "Better Read Than Dead". There is a short history of the Commonweal Collection by Sylvia Barlow and a piece by Sara Lobman on the culture war against the use of public libraries in America. Our regular features include book reviews (a riot to read), other organisations (fellow travellers) and Christopher Merrett's letter from South Africa.
