Purpose: To observe the effects of visual neuroplasticity training on visual perception, visual quality, and macular blood flow in patients with concomitant strabismus postoperatively. Methods: In total, 108 patients underwent binocular strabismus correction operation, and some patients underwent neuroplasticity training. All patients underwent clinical ophthalmic examination, including measurement of best-corrected visual acuity, spherical equivalent, axis length, optical coherence tomography angiography, optical quality analysis system, and visual perception examinations. Results: A total of 78 patients received neuroplasticity training for 1 month postoperatively, and 30 patients did not receive training. All patients underwent a visual perception examination preoperatively and at 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month postoperatively. Macular blood flow and visual quality were examined preoperatively and at 1 month postoperatively. Postoperative visual perception was better than preoperative visual perception (P < 0.05). After neuroplasticity training, the visual perception of the trained subjects was better than that of the untrained subjects (P < 0.05), and the blood flow in the macular area of the trained patients was lower than that of the untrained subjects (P < 0.05). The visual quality of the untrained subjects was lower than that of the trained patients (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Visual inspection system could accurately evaluate binocular visual perception in patients with concomitant strabismus. After surgical alignment of the strabismus patient, training can stimulate and integrate the formation of stereovision in a short period of time, maintain the visual quality of patients after surgery, and provide conditions for the formation of binocular visual signals and binocular stereovision, but in the short term, it will lead to the decrease of macular blood vessel density and perfusion density. Purpose: To report retinal thickness values and macular vascular flow characteristics identified by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in patients with various sickle cell genotypes in a population from sub-Saharan Africa. Design: Retrospective, observational study. Methods: This is a single-institution case series of adult patients with various sickle cell genotypes who presented to the Eye Foundation Hospital Lagos between January 2022 and December 2023. Case files of patients were reviewed, and macular OCT and OCT-A images analyzed quantitatively for macular thickness, areas of flow loss, size of foveal avascular area, parafoveal flow, as well as vascular density in both the superficial and deep vascular plexi. The findings were compared by sickle cell genotype and comparisons made with age matched normal patients. Results: A total of 38 eyes of 19 patients’ records were reviewed, and 35 eyes met the inclusion criteria; 16 eyes of 9 age and gender matched controls were included. The mean central foveal thickness (CFT) was 242.4 μm ± 33.3 μm among patients’ eyes, while a mean CFT of 236.1 μm ± 10.1 μm was measured among controls (p = 0.312). A smaller mean FAZ area of 0.270 mm2 ± 0.116 mm2 was seen among the control eyes compared to a mean of 0.314 mm2 ± 0.206 mm2 among patients’ eyes (p = 0.439). The mean flow area was larger among control eyes with 0.849 mm2 ± 0.647 mm2 compared to a mean flow of 0.822 mm2 ± 0.471 mm2 among patients’ eyes (0.868). The mean superficial foveal vessel density was greater among control eyes (19.30 ± 4.58) compared to patient eyes (18.77 ± 7.78) (p = 0.765). The mean deep foveal vessel density was greater among controls (35.30 ± 8.36) than among patients (34.06 ± 9.30) (p = 0.650). The difference between eyes of SC (53.37 ± 5.13) patients and SS (47.94 ± 8.44) patients in the deep temporal perifoveal VD was statistically significant (p = 0.035). Conclusion: The retina in eyes with sickle retinopathy and that of controls tends to be thickest in the nasal quadrant, then the superior, then inferior, and then thinnest in the temporal quadrant. Macular vessel density in both the superficial and deep capillary plexi was thicker among controls compared to eyes with sickle cell retinopathy. Among patients’ eyes, the deep capillary vessel density in the temporal perifoveal quadrant was greater among SC patients compared to SS (p = 0.035).

AIM: To assess the changes of vessel density in the optic disc and macular of the affected eye and the uninvolved contralateral eye in patients with idiopathic optic neuritis(ON)and to provide clinical guidance for the treatment and follow-up of idiopathic ON.METHODS: A total of 16 patients with first-episode monocular idiopathic ON ≤3 mo diagnosed between December 2019 and December 2021 were included in this cross-sectional study. The eye of patients was divided into 16 eyes in the affected eye group and 16 eyes in the uninvolved contralateral eye group, and 20 healthy age-matched eyes(n=20)served as controls. Optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)was performed in all eyes at 4.5 mm×4.5 mm region of the optical disc and 6 mm×6 mm region of the macular, and blood flow indicators were collected and compared. AIM:To investigate the changes in the macular microvasculature in eyes with central retinal artery occlusion(CRAO)and paracentral acute middle maculopathy(PAMM).METHODS: Retrospective study. A total of 27 cases(27 eyes)who diagnosed with CRAO-PAMM and 29 patients(29 eyes)diagnosed as CRAO but with no PAMM were hospitalized in our hospital from January 2020 to December 2021. There were 33 normal people(33 eyes)who underwent physical examination in our hospital selected as control group. Background. Recently, more and more attention has been paid to the development of vascular retinal disorders after suffering preeclampsia. It is noted that the key role in this process is assigned to the systemic endothelial dysfunction that persists for a long time after delivery.Aim: to elucidate the features of vascular-platelet and coagulation hemostasis in relation to the indicators of blood flow in the macular region in women with preeclampsia.Materials and methods. The main group included 45 women with preeclampsia in the third trimester of pregnancy (35–36 weeks). Their age ranged from 19 to 40 years (27 ± 5.2 years). The comparison group was represented by 20 women with physiological pregnancy in the third trimester (35–36 weeks). Their age averaged 26 ± 5.1 years (18–38 years). Somatically healthy non-pregnant women (20 people) were included in the control group. Their age ranged from 19 to 38 years (26 ± 5.4 years). A comparative analysis of the studied parameters of macular blood fl ow, vascular-platelet and coagulation hemostasis between the groups was carried out.Results. When studying the number of platelets in pregnant women, it turned out that in patients with preeclampsia, this indicator was statistically signifi cantly lower compared to the comparison and control groups (p < 0.05). The level of fi brinogen in women with complicated pregnancies was statistically significantly higher than in women with physiological pregnancy and in somatically healthy nonpregnant women (p < 0.05). In addition, retinal microcirculation disorders were observed in women of the main group.Conclusions. The revealed disorders of vascular-platelet and coagulation hemostasis in women during the period of complicated pregnancy were accompanied by disorders of macular blood fl ow in the form of a decrease in the total average density of vessels in the superfi cial vascular plexus, subfoveolar thickness of the choroid and an increase in the area of the avascular zone relative to the group of women with physiological pregnancy and somatically healthy nonpregnant women.

AIM: To evaluate a high-resolution functional imaging device that yields quantitative data regarding macular blood flow and capillary network features in eyes with diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS: Prospective, cross-sectional comparative case-series in which blood flow velocities (BFVs) and non-invasive capillary perfusion maps (nCPMs) in macular vessels were measured in patients with DR and in healthy controls using the Retinal Functional Imager (RFI) device. RESULTS: A total of 27 eyes of 21 subjects were studied [9 eyes nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), 9 eyes proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and 9 controls]. All diabetic patients were type 2. All patients with NPDR and 5 eyes with PDR also had diabetic macular edema (DME). The NPDR group included eyes with severe (n=3) and moderate NPDR (n=6), and were symptomatic. A significant decrease in venular BFVs was observed in the macular region of PDR eyes when compared to controls (2.61±0.6 mm/s and 2.92±0.72 mm/s in PDR and controls, respectively, P=0.019) as well as PDR eyes with DME compared to NPDR eyes (2.36±0.51 mm/s and 2.94±1.09 mm/s in PDR with DME and NPDR, respectively, P=0.01). CONCLUSION: The RFI, a non-invasive imaging tool, provides high-resolution functional imaging of the retinal microvasculature and quantitative measurement of BFVs in visually impaired DR patients. The isolated diminish venular BFVs in PDR eyes compared to healthy eyes and PDR eyes with DME in comparison to NPDR eyes may indicate the possibility of more retinal vein compromise than suspected in advanced DR.

Objective The aim of this study was to determine the repeatability and reproducibility of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) based on optical microangiography (OMAG) measurements of macular vessels in normal eyes. Methods In this prospective cohort study, 40 eyes of 40 healthy volunteers underwent repeated OCTA (Cirrus HD-OCT 5000 angiography system, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc.) scans on two separate visit days. On each visit day, the eyes were scanned three times. The following parameters were used to quantitatively describe the OCTA images of the superficial vascular network: vessel area density (VAD), vessel skeleton density (VSD), vessel diameter index (VDI), vessel perimeter index (VPI), vessel complexity index (VCI), flux, and foveal avascular zone (FAZ). Coefficient of variation (CV) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were calculated for evaluating intravisit and intervisit repeatability, as well as interobserver reproducibility. Results The measurements showed high repeatability [CVs ≤ 4.2% (intravisit) and ≤ 4.6% (intervisit)] and interobserver reproducibility (ICCs ≥ 0.923) for all parameters. Conclusion This study demonstrated good repeatability and reproducibility of OCTA based on OMAG for the measurement of superficial vessel parameters in normal eyes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose To evaluate the therapeutic effect of topical unoprostone isopropyl (unoprostone) on patients with retinitis pigmentosa ( RP). Methods Forty patients with typical forms of RP were included in the study. Seventeen of 40 patients were treated with 0.12% topical unoprostone twice daily in a randomly selected eye. Patients underwent follow-up examinations every 3 months after treatment. The efficacy of the treatment was monitored by visual acuity and visual field measurement testing using the Humphrey Field Analyzer ( HFA: the central 10-2 programme). Moreover, 12 RP patients who were included this study and 12 normal subjects were evaluated in terms of their macular blood flow of both eyes after instillation of unoprostone using the laser speckle method. Results One year after treatment, the 'macular sensitivity', calculated by HFA as the average sensitivity of the central 12 points, was preserved in the fellow eyes as well as the unoprostone-treated eyes. On the other hand, that in the eyes of the control RP patient was significantly decreased. Moreover, there were significantly greater improvements of the 'macular sensitivity' in the unoprostone-treated eyes than the fellow eyes. The change ratios of macular blood flow obtained from both RP patients and normal subjects were significantly increased in both the treated and the fellow eyes. No severe side-effects were observed. Conclusions These results demonstrate that topical unoprostone might have a therapeutic efficacy in patients with RP as a consequence of the macular blood flow improvement as well as its direct neuroprotective effect. Purpose: To investigate the quantitative response of retinal circulation in normal human eyes to oxygen and carbon dioxide provocation and to gain more information about retinal mean transit time (MTT). Methods: Healthy subjects were studied while breathing: room air (O2 baseline); pure O2; room air (CO2 baseline), and CO2 in room air. The CO2 level was brought to 30% above individual baseline level. During each gas exposure, blue field simulation was used to estimate the velocity of macular leucocytes and fluorescein angiography was used to determine MTT, arteriovenous passage time (AVP) and vessel diameters. Results: Breathing pure O2 caused a reduction in macular leucocyte velocity of about 13%, a non-significant change in MTT and AVP from baseline, and a 10% reduction in the diameter of temporal retinal arteries and veins. Breathing CO2 caused an increase in macular leucocyte velocity of 21%, a non-significant change in MTT and AVP, and no change in retinal vascular diameters. Conclusion: Both O2 and CO2 had the expected effects on retinal blood flow, as judged by leucocyte velocity in the macular capillaries, but little effect on retinal MTT, indicating concomitant changes in flow and retinal vascular volume. Measuring the diameter of retinal vessels before and during pure O2 breathing is a simple and effective way of determining the reactivity of retinal vessels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
