The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is set to transform many areas of astronomy, one of the most exciting is the expansion of the redshift frontier to $z>10$. In its first year alone JWST should discover hundreds of galaxies, dwarfing the handful currently known. To prepare for these powerful observational constraints, we use the First Light And Reionisation Epoch (FLARES) simulations to predict the physical and observational properties of the $z>10$ population of galaxies accessible to JWST. This is the first time such predictions have been made using a hydrodynamical model validated at low redshift. Our predictions at $z=10$ are broadly in agreement with current observational constraints on the far-UV luminosity function and UV continuum slope $β$, though the observational uncertainties are large. We note tension with recent constraints $z\sim 13$ from Harikane et al. 2022 - compared to these constraints, FLARES predicts objects with the same space density should have an order of magnitude lower luminosity, though this is mitigated slightly if dust attenuation is negligible in these systems. Our predictions suggest that in JWST's first cycle alone, around $600$ galaxies should be identified at $z>10$, with the first small samples available at $z>13$., Submitted to MNRAS 20/04/2022

Next generation telescopes, like Euclid, Rubin/LSST, and Roman, will open new windows on the Universe, allowing us to infer physical properties for tens of millions of galaxies. Machine learning methods are increasingly becoming the most efficient tools to handle this enormous amount of data, because they are often faster and more accurate than traditional methods. We investigate how well redshifts, stellar masses, and star-formation rates (SFR) can be measured with deep learning algorithms for observed galaxies within data mimicking the Euclid and Rubin/LSST surveys. We find that Deep Learning Neural Networks and Convolutional Neutral Networks (CNN), which are dependent on the parameter space of the training sample, perform well in measuring the properties of these galaxies and have a better accuracy than methods based on spectral energy distribution fitting. CNNs allow the processing of multi-band magnitudes together with $H_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm E}$-band images. We find that the estimates of stellar masses improve with the use of an image, but those of redshift and SFR do not. Our best results are deriving i) the redshift within a normalised error of less than 0.15 for 99.9$\%$ of the galaxies with S/N>3 in the $H_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm E}$-band; ii) the stellar mass within a factor of two ($\sim0.3 \rm dex$) for 99.5$\%$ of the considered galaxies; iii) the SFR within a factor of two ($\sim0.3 \rm dex$) for $\sim$70$\%$ of the sample. The ESA Euclid mission will provide high-quality imaging for about 1.5 billion galaxies. A software pipeline to automatically process and analyse such a huge amount of data in real time is being developed by the Science Ground Segment of the Euclid Consortium; this pipeline will include a model-fitting algorithm, which will provide photometric and morphological estimates of paramount importance for the core science goals of the mission and for legacy science. The Euclid Morphology Challenge is a comparative investigation of the performance of five model-fitting software packages on simulated Euclid data, aimed at providing the baseline to identify the best suited algorithm to be implemented in the pipeline. In this paper we describe the simulated data set, and we discuss the photometry results. A companion paper (Euclid Collaboration: Bretonni\`ere et al. 2022) is focused on the structural and morphological estimates. We created mock Euclid images simulating five fields of view of 0.48 deg2 each in the $I_E$ band of the VIS instrument, each with three realisations of galaxy profiles (single and double S\'ersic, and 'realistic' profiles obtained with a neural network); for one of the fields in the double S\'ersic realisation, we also simulated images for the three near-infrared $Y_E$, $J_E$ and $H_E$ bands of the NISP-P instrument, and five Rubin/LSST optical complementary bands ($u$, $g$, $r$, $i$, and $z$). To analyse the results we created diagnostic plots and defined ad-hoc metrics. Five model-fitting software packages (DeepLeGATo, Galapagos-2, Morfometryka, ProFit, and SourceXtractor++) were compared, all typically providing good results. (cut), Comment: 29 pages, 33 figures. We present fast (~200s sampling) ugriz photometry of the low mass AGN NGC 4395 with the Liverpool Telescope, followed by very fast (3s sampling) us, gs, rs, is and zs simultaneous monitoring with HiPERCAM on the 10.4m GTC. These observations provide the fastest ever AGN multiband photometry and very precise lag measurements. Unlike in all other AGN, gs lags us by a large amount, consistent with disc reprocessing but not with reprocessing in the Broad Line Region (BLR). There is very little increase in lag with wavelength at long wavelengths, indicating an outer edge (Rout) to the reprocessor. We have compared truncated disc reprocessing models to the combined HiPERCAM and previous X-ray/UV lags. For the normally accepted mass of 3.6E5 solar, we obtain reasonable agreement with zero spin, Rout ~1700 Rg, and the DONE physically-motivated temperature-dependent disc colour correction factor (fcol). A smaller mass of 4E4 solar can only be accomodated if fcol=2.4, which is probably unrealistically high. Disc self gravity is probably unimportant in this low mass AGN but an obscuring wind may provide an edge. For the small mass the dust sublimation radius is similar to Rout, so the wind could be dusty. However for the more likely large mass the sublimation radius is further out so the optically-thick base of a line-driven gaseous wind is more likely. The inner edge of the BLR is close to Rout in both cases. These observations provide the first good evidence for a truncated AGN disc and caution that truncation should be included in reverberation lag modelling., 19 pages, 27 figures

We report on the stellar content, half-light radii and star formation rates of a sample of 10 known high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 2$) galaxies selected on strong neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption (log(N(HI)/cm$^{-2})>19$) toward background quasars. We use observations from the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 in three broad-band filters to study the spectral energy distribution(SED) of the galaxies. Using careful quasar point spread function subtraction, we study their galactic environments, and perform the first systematic morphological characterisation of such absorption-selected galaxies at high redshifts. Our analysis reveals complex, irregular hosts with multiple star-forming clumps. At a spatial sampling of 0.067 arcsec per pixel (corresponding to 0.55 kpc at the median redshift of our sample), 40% of our sample requires multiple S��rsic components for an accurate modelling of the observed light distributions. Placed on the mass-size relation and the `main sequence' of star-forming galaxies, we find that absorption-selected galaxies at high redshift extend known relations determined from deep luminosity-selected surveys to an order of magnitude lower stellar mass, with objects primarily composed of star-forming, late-type galaxies. We measure half-light radii in the range $r_{1/2} \sim$ 0.4 to 2.6 kpc based on the reddest band (F160W) to trace the oldest stellar populations, and stellar masses in the range $\log (\mathrm{M}_{\star}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot}) \sim$ 8 to 10 derived from fits to the broad-band SED. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES In this work, we revisit the problem of morphological classification of BCG galaxies, in order to identify the characteristic signatures of cD-class galaxies. For this, we analyze the r-band surface brightness distributions from the SDSS survey of a sample of 339 BCG galaxies, visually classified by Zhao; Aragón-Salamanca; Conselice (2015). By means of a modeling of the brightness distribution via a Sérsic profile fit, we obtained the residual flux ratio RFF and rotational asymmetry A. In the plane logRFF − η with η = RFF − A, we characterize three families of BCGs (“envelopes”, “transition” and “elliptical" conventional). Analyzing the radial profiles of ellipticity, position angle and brightness of isophots of representative objects, wefindthat the visual classification has no direct correspondence with the families identified in the log RFF−ηplane. Thelightprofilesofthe“envelopes”family are generally consistent with the occurrence of an external structural component described by an exponential law. Objects in the transition family resemble those of the “envelopes” class, except that they show less unequivocal signs of the presence of the envelope and more frequently show signs that the envelope is under development. The typical ellipticities of the different families identified in the logRFF − η plane are compatible with other estimates made in the literature, but the galaxies visually classified as ellipticals are much more circular, suggestive of a classification bias. Furthermore, the logarithmic slope of the radial brightness profiles of galaxies visually classified as cD but which are in the region of the elliptic galaxies in the logRFF −η diagram is almost identical to that shown by cD galaxies as a whole, so these galaxies are compatible with the morphological class D. This suggests that the visual classification is sensitive mainly to the logarithmic slope of the brightness profiles and not to the presence of an external envelope, thus confusing a galaxy D with a galaxy cD. These results show that visual inspection classifications are subject to at least two sources of bias that contaminate samples of cD galaxies, with impacts both on the demography and on studies on the formation and evolution of these objects. Para isso, analisamos as distribuições de brilho superficial na banda r do levantamento SDSS de uma amostra de 339 galáxias BCG, classificadas visualmente por Zhao; Aragón-Salamanca; Conselice (2015). A partir de uma modelagem da distribuição de brilho via ajuste de perfil de Sérsic, obtivemos a razão de fluxo residual RFF e a assimetria rotacional A. No espaço de parâmetros logRFF −η com η = RFF −A,caracterizamos três famílias de BCGs (“envelopes”, “transição” e “elípticas” convencionais). Analisando os perfis radiais de elipticidade, ângulo de posição e brilho das isofotas de objetos representativos, encontramos que a classificação visual não tem correspondência direta com as famílias que identificamos no plano logRFF − η. Os perfis de brilho radial da família “envelopes” são em geral consistentes com a ocorrência de um componente estrutural externo descrito por uma lei exponencial. Objetos na família de transição se assemelham aos da classe “envelopes”, exceto pelo fato de apresentarem sinais menos inequívocos da presença do envelope e apresentarem, mais frequentemente, sinais de que o envelope está em processo de desenvolvimento. As elipticidades típicas das diferentes famílias identificadas no plano logRFF −η são compatíveis com outras estimativas realizadas na literatura, mas as galáxias classificadas visualmente como elípticas são muito mais circulares, sugestivo de um viés de classificação. Além disso, o slope logarítmico dos perfis de brilho radiais das galáxias classif icadas visualmente como cD mas que estão na região das elípticas no diagrama logRFF −η é indistinguível daquele mostrado pelas galáxias cD como um todo, de forma que essas galáxias são compatíveis com a classe morfológica D. We investigate the relations between nuclear star clusters (NSCs) and their host galaxies, and between the structural properties of nucleated and non-nucleated galaxies. We also address the environmental influences on the nucleation of galaxies in the Fornax main cluster and the Fornax A group. We select 557 Fornax galaxies ($10^{5.5} M_{\odot} < M_{\rm *,galaxy} < 10^{11.5} M_{\odot} $) for which structural decomposition models and non-parametric indices are available. We determine galaxy nucleation based on a combination of visual inspection and a model selection statistic, the Bayesian information criterion (BIC). We also test the BIC as an unsupervised method to determine nucleation labels. We find a dichotomy in the properties of nuclei which reside in galaxies more or less massive than $M_{\rm *,galaxy} \approx 10^{8.5} M_{\odot}$. Specifically, the nuclei tend to be bluer than their host galaxies and follow a scaling relation of $M_{\rm *,nuc} \propto {M_{\rm *,galaxy}}^{0.5}$ for $M_{\rm *,galaxy} < 10^{8.5} M_{\odot}$. In galaxies with $M_{\rm *,galaxy} > 10^{8.5} M_{\odot}$ we find that nuclei are redder compared to the host and follow $M_{\rm *,nuc} \propto M_{\rm *,galaxy}$. Comparing early-type galaxies, we find that nucleated galaxies tend to be redder in global ($g'-r'$) colour, have redder outskirts relative to their own inner regions ($Δ(g'-r')$), be less asymmetric ($A$) and exhibit less scatter in the brightest second order moment of light ($M_{20}$) than their non-nucleated counterparts at a given stellar mass. Additionally, we find the nucleation fractions to be typically higher in the Fornax main cluster than in the Fornax A group, and that the nucleation fraction is highest towards the centre of their respective environments. We also find that the BIC can recover our labels of nucleation up to an accuracy of 97\%. (abridged), accepted to be published in A&A

We present the intrinsic and observed sizes of galaxies at z ≥ 5 in the First Light And Reionisation Epoch Simulations (flares). We employ the large effective volume of flares to produce a sizeable sample of high-redshift galaxies with intrinsic and observed luminosities and half-light radii in a range of rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) and visual photometric bands. This sample contains a significant number of intrinsically ultracompact galaxies in the far-UV (1500 Å), leading to a negative intrinsic far-UV size–luminosity relation. However, after the inclusion of the effects of dust these same compact galaxies exhibit observed sizes that are as much as 50 times larger than those measured from the intrinsic emission, and broadly agree with a range of observational samples. This increase in size is driven by the concentration of dust in the core of galaxies, heavily attenuating the intrinsically brightest regions. At fixed luminosity we find a galaxy size redshift evolution with a slope of m = 1.21–1.87 depending on the luminosity sample in question, and we demonstrate the wavelength dependence of the size–luminosity relation that will soon be probed by the James Webb Space Telescope.

The $AKARI$ infrared (IR) space telescope conducted two surveys (Deep and Wide) in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) field to find more than 100,000 IR sources using its Infrared Camera (IRC). IRC's 9 filters, which cover wavebands from 2 to 24 $\mu$m continuously, make $AKARI$ unique in comparison with other IR observatories such as $Spitzer$ or $WISE$. However, studies of the $AKARI$ NEP-Wide field sources had been limited due to the lack of follow-up observations in the ultraviolet (UV) and optical. In this work, we present the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) MegaPrime/MegaCam $u$-band source catalogue of the $AKARI$ NEP-Wide field. The observations were taken in 7 nights in 2015 and 2016, resulting in 82 observed frames covering 3.6 deg$^2$. The data reduction, image processing and source extraction were performed in a standard procedure using the \textsc{Elixir} pipeline and the \textsc{AstrOmatic} software, and eventually 351,635 sources have been extracted. The data quality is discussed in two regions (shallow and deep) separately, due to the difference in the total integration time (4,520 and 13,910 seconds). The 5$\sigma$ limiting magnitude, seeing FWHM, and the magnitude at 50 per cent completeness are 25.38 mag (25.79 mag in the deep region), 0.82 arcsec (0.94 arcsec) and 25.06 mag (25.45 mag), respectively. The u-band data provide us with critical improvements to photometric redshifts and UV estimates of the precious infrared sources from the $AKARI$ space telescope., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Context.: The Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S⁴G) is a detailed study of over 2300 nearby galaxies in the near-infrared (NIR), which has been critical to our understanding of the detailed structures of nearby galaxies. Because the sample galaxies were selected only using radio-derived velocities, however, the survey favored late-type disk galaxies over lenticulars and ellipticals. Aims: A follow-up Spitzer survey was conducted to rectify this bias, adding 465 early-type galaxies (ETGs) to the original sample, to be analyzed in a manner consistent with the initial survey. We present the data release of this ETG extension, up to the third data processing pipeline (P3): surface photometry. Methods: We produce curves of growth and radial surface brightness profiles (with and without inclination corrections) using reduced and masked Spitzer IRAC 3.6 μm and 4.5 μm images produced through Pipelines 1 and 2, respectively. From these profiles, we derive the following integrated quantities: total magnitudes, stellar masses, concentration parameters, and galaxy size metrics. We showcase NIR scaling relations for ETGs among these quantities. Results: We examine general trends across the whole S⁴G and ETG extension among our derived parameters, highlighting differences between ETGs and late-type galaxies (LTGs). The latter are, on average, more massive and more concentrated than LTGs, and subtle distinctions are seen among ETG morphological subtypes. We also derive the following scaling relations and compare them with previous results in visible light: mass-size (both half-light and isophotal), mass-concentration, mass-surface brightness (central, effective, and within 1 kpc), and mass-color. Conclusions: We find good agreement with previous works, though some relations (e.g., mass-central surface brightness) will require more careful multicomponent decompositions to be fully understood. The relations between mass and isophotal radius and between mass and surface brightness within 1 kpc, in particular, show notably small scatter. The former provides important constraints on the limits of size growth in galaxies, possibly related to star formation thresholds, while the latter–particularly when paired with the similarly tight relation for LTGs–showcases the striking self-similarity of galaxy cores, suggesting they evolve little over cosmic time. All of the profiles and parameters described in this paper will be provided to the community via the NASA/IPAC database on a dedicated website.

At ~50 Mpc, the Hydra I cluster of galaxies is among the closest cluster in the z=0 Universe, and an ideal environment to study dwarf galaxy properties in a cluster environment. We exploit deep imaging data of the Hydra I cluster to construct a new photometric catalog of dwarf galaxies in the cluster core, which is then used to derive properties of the Hydra I cluster dwarf galaxies population as well as to compare with other clusters. Moreover, we investigate the dependency of dwarf galaxy properties on their surrounding environment. Submillimeter/millimeter observations of dusty star-forming galaxies with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have shown that dust continuum emission generally occurs in compact regions smaller than the stellar distribution. However, it remains to be understood how systematic these findings are. Studies often lack homogeneity in the sample selection, target discontinuous areas with inhomogeneous sensitivities, and suffer from modest $uv$ coverage coming from single array configurations. GOODS-ALMA is a 1.1mm galaxy survey over a continuous area of 72.42arcmin$^2$ at a homogeneous sensitivity. In this version 2.0, we present a new low resolution dataset and its combination with the previous high resolution dataset from the survey, improving the $uv$ coverage and sensitivity reaching an average of $��= 68.4��$Jy beam$^{-1}$. A total of 88 galaxies are detected in a blind search (compared to 35 in the high resolution dataset alone), 50% at $S/N_{peak} \geq 5$ and 50% at $3.5 \leq S/N_{peak} \leq 5$ aided by priors. Among them, 13 out of the 88 are optically dark or faint sources ($H$- or $K$-band dropouts). The sample dust continuum sizes at 1.1mm are generally compact, with a median effective radius of $R_{e} = 0"10 \pm 0"05$ (a physical size of $R_{e} = 0.73 \pm 0.29$kpc at the redshift of each source). Dust continuum sizes evolve with redshift and stellar mass resembling the trends of the stellar sizes measured at optical wavelengths, albeit a lower normalization compared to those of late-type galaxies. We conclude that for sources with flux densities $S_{1.1mm} > 1$mJy, compact dust continuum emission at 1.1mm prevails, and sizes as extended as typical star-forming stellar disks are rare. The $S_{1.1mm} < 1$mJy sources appear slightly more extended at 1.1mm, although they are still generally compact below the sizes of typical star-forming stellar disks., Accepted by A&A. 30 pages, 18 figures

Context. The Euclid mission is expected to discover thousands of z > 6 galaxies in three deep fields, which together will cover a similar to 50 deg(2) area. However, the limited number of Euclid bands (four) and the low availability of ancillary data could make the identification of z > 6 galaxies challenging., Aims. In this work we assess the degree of contamination by intermediate-redshift galaxies (z = 1-5.8) expected for z > 6 galaxies within the Euclid Deep Survey., Methods. This study is based on similar to 176 000 real galaxies at z = 1-8 in a similar to 0.7 deg(2) area selected from the UltraVISTA ultra-deep survey and similar to 96 000 mock galaxies with 25.3, Results. We demonstrate that identifying z > 6 galaxies with Euclid data alone will be very effective, with a z > 6 recovery of 91% (88%) for bright (faint) galaxies. For the UltraVISTA-like bright sample, the percentage of z = 1-5.8 contaminants amongst apparent z > 6 galaxies as observed with Euclid alone is 18%, which is reduced to 4% (13%) by including ultra-deep Rubin (Spitzer) photometry. Conversely, for the faint mock sample, the contamination fraction with Euclid alone is considerably higher at 39%, and minimised to 7% when including ultra-deep Rubin data. For UltraVISTA-like bright galaxies, we find that Euclid (I-E - Y-E) > 2:8 and (Y-E - J(E)) < 1.4 colour criteria can separate contaminants from true z > 6 galaxies, although these are applicable to only 54% of the contaminants as many have unconstrained (I-E - Y-E) colours. In the best scenario, these cuts reduce the contamination fraction to 1% whilst preserving 81% of the fiducial z > 6 sample. For the faint mock sample, colour cuts are infeasible; we find instead that a 5 sigma detection threshold requirement in at least one of the Euclid near-infrared bands reduces the contamination fraction to 25%.

International audience; Euclid is a mission of the European Space Agency that is designed to constrain the properties of dark energy and gravity via weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering. It will carry out a wide area imaging and spectroscopy survey (the Euclid Wide Survey: EWS) in visible and near-infrared bands, covering approximately 15 000 deg 2 of extragalactic sky in six years. The wide-field telescope and instruments are optimised for pristine point spread function and reduced stray light, producing very crisp images. This paper presents the building of the Euclid reference survey: the sequence of pointings of EWS, deep fields, and calibration fields, as well as spacecraft movements followed by Euclid as it operates in a step-and-stare mode from its orbit around the Lagrange point L2. Each EWS pointing has four dithered frames; we simulated the dither pattern at the pixel level to analyse the effective coverage. We used up-to-date models for the sky background to define the Euclid region-of-interest (RoI). The building of the reference survey is highly constrained from calibration cadences, spacecraft constraints, and background levels; synergies with ground-based coverage were also considered. Via purposely built software, we first generated a schedule for the calibrations and deep fields observations. On a second stage, the RoI was tiled and scheduled with EWS observations, using an algorithm optimised to prioritise the best sky areas, produce a compact coverage, and ensure thermal stability. The result is the optimised reference survey RSD_2021A, which fulfils all constraints and is a good proxy for the final solution. The current EWS covers ≈14 500 deg 2 . The limiting AB magnitudes (5 σ point-like source) achieved in its footprint are estimated to be 26.2 (visible band I E ) and 24.5 (for near infrared bands Y E , J E , H E ); for spectroscopy, the H α line flux limit is 2 × 10 −16 erg −1 cm −2 s −1 at 1600 nm; and for diffuse emission, the surface brightness limits are 29.8 (visible band) and 28.4 (near infrared bands) mag arcsec −2 .

Our current understanding of the cosmic star formation history at z>3 is primarily based on UV-selected galaxies (i.e., LBGs). Recent studies of H-dropouts have revealed that we may be missing a large proportion of star formation that is taking place in massive galaxies at z>3. In this work, we extend the H-dropout criterion to lower masses to select optically dark/faint galaxies (OFGs), in order to complete the census between LBGs and H-dropouts. Our criterion (H> 26.5 mag & [4.5] < 25 mag) combined with a de-blending technique is designed to select not only extremely dust-obscured massive galaxies but also normal star-forming galaxies. In total, we identified 27 OFGs at z_phot > 3 (z_med=4.1) in the GOODS-ALMA field, covering a wide distribution of stellar masses with log($M_{\star}$/$M_{\odot}$) = 9.4-11.1. We find that up to 75% of the OFGs with log($M_{\star}$/$M_{\odot}$) = 9.5-10.5 were neglected by previous LBGs and H-dropout selection techniques. After performing stacking analyses, the OFGs exhibit shorter gas depletion timescales, slightly lower gas fractions, and lower dust temperatures than typical star-forming galaxies. Their SFR_tot (SFR_ IR+SFR_UV) is much larger than SFR_UVcorr (corrected for dust extinction), with SFR_tot/SFR_UVcorr = $8\pm1$, suggesting the presence of hidden dust regions in the OFGs that absorb all UV photons. The average dust size measured by a circular Gaussian model fit is R_e(1.13 mm)=1.01$\pm$0.05 kpc. We find that the cosmic SFRD at z>3 contributed by massive OFGs is at least two orders of magnitude higher than the one contributed by equivalently massive LBGs. Finally, we calculate the combined contribution of OFGs and LBGs to the cosmic SFRD at z=4-5 to be 4 $\times$ 10$^{-2}$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-3}$, which is about 0.15 dex (43%) higher than the SFRD derived from UV-selected samples alone at the same redshift., 26 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables. In this work, we extend the catalog of low-surface brightness (LSB) galaxies, including ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates, within ≈0.4Rvir of the Hydra I cluster of galaxies based on deep images from the VST Early-type GAlaxy Survey (VEGAS). The new galaxies were found by applying an automatic detection tool and carrying out additional visual inspections of g and r band images. This led to the detection of 11 UDGs and 8 more LSB galaxies. For all of them, we assessed the cluster membership using the color–magnitude relation derived for early-type giant and dwarf galaxies in Hydra I. The UDGs and new LSB galaxies found in Hydra I span a wide range of central surface brightness (22.7 ≲ μ0, g ≲ 26.5 mag arcsec⁻²), effective radius (0.6 ≲ Re ≲ 4.0 kpc), and color (0.4 ≤ g − r ≤ 0.9 mag), and have stellar masses in the range ∼5 × 10⁶ − 2 × 10⁸ M⊙. The 2D projected distribution of both galaxy types is similar to the spatial distribution of dwarf galaxies, with over-densities in the cluster core and north of the cluster center. They have similar color distribution and comparable stellar masses to the red dwarf galaxies. Based on photometric selection, we identify a total of nine globular cluster (GC) candidates associated to the UDGs and four to the LSB galaxies, with the highest number of candidates in an individual UDG being three. We find that there are no relevant differences between dwarfs, LSB galaxies, and UDGs: the structural parameters (i.e., surface brightness, size, color, and n-index) and GC content of the three classes have similar properties and trends. This finding is consistent with UDGs being the extreme LSB tail of the size–luminosity distribution of dwarfs in this environment.

We calculated morphological parameters for 70821 galaxies from VIPERS (spectroscopic galaxy survey performed on VIMOS spectroscope at VLT). These parameters includes Gini, M20, Concentration, Asymmetry and Smoothness. Results correlate with the distribution of these parameters for other simulated and observed samples. We also studied dependence of these parameters with Sersic power index of radial distribution of surface brightness of galaxy image. Our aim was to find a clear separation of VIPERS galaxies on elliptical and spiral. This is necessary for testing the method of Sersic index (ns) calculation in statmorph program. To find such bimodality we use B-V color index from VIPERS database. To perform the error analysis of morphological parameters we simulated galaxy images with random background of different magnitude and estimated the errors as dispersion of the parameters. We also found asymptotic values of errors of morphological parameters by increasing the numbers of mock images. To analyse the possible variation of each morphological parameter during the convolution of close galactic images, we have simulated them to research. In the result of this investigation we have analysed the dependence of the every morphological parameter from CAS and Gini/M20 statistics from the distance between galactic centers. The differences between our results for VIPERS and Gini-M20 distribution for PanStarrs galaxies at z0.5 which corresponds to VIPERS sample. This paper presents a new search for $z\geq7.5$ galaxies using the COSMOS2020 photometric catalogues. Finding galaxies at the reionization epoch through deep imaging surveys remains observationally challenging. The larger area covered by ground-based surveys like COSMOS enables the discovery of the brightest galaxies at these high redshifts. Covering $1.4$deg$^2$, our COSMOS catalogues were constructed from the latest UltraVISTA data release (DR4) combined with the final Spitzer/IRAC COSMOS images and the Hyper-Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program DR2 release. Context. Precise measurements of black hole masses are essential to understanding the coevolution of these sources and their host galaxies. Aims. We develop a novel approach for computing black hole virial masses using measurements of continuum luminosities and emission line widths from partially overlapping, narrow-band observations of quasars; we refer to this technique as single-epoch photometry. Methods. This novel method relies on forward-modelling quasar observations for estimating emission line widths, which enables unbiased measurements even for lines coarsely resolved by narrow-band data. We assess the performance of this technique using quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) observed by the miniJPAS survey, a proof-of-concept project of the Javalambre Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) collaboration covering ≃1 deg2 of the northern sky using the 56 J-PAS narrow-band filters. Results. We find remarkable agreement between black hole masses from single-epoch SDSS spectra and single-epoch miniJPAS photometry, with no systematic difference between these and a scatter ranging from 0.4 to 0.07 dex for masses from log(MBH)≃8 to 9.75, respectively. Reverberation mapping studies show that single-epoch masses present approximately 0.4 dex precision, letting us conclude that our novel technique delivers black hole masses with only mildly lower precision than single-epoch spectroscopy. Conclusions. We investigate the origin of the extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) and its predominant ionization mechanisms in five nearby (17-46 Mpc) low-mass ($10^9\text{-}10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$) edge-on disk galaxies: ESO 157-49, ESO 469-15, ESO 544-27, IC 217, and IC 1553. We acquired Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field spectroscopy and deep narrowband H$\alpha$ imaging of our sample galaxies. To investigate the connection between in-plane star formation and eDIG, we perform a photometric analysis of our narrowband H$\alpha$ imaging. We measure eDIG scale heights of $h_{z\text{eDIG}} = 0.59 \text{-} 1.39$ kpc and find a positive correlation between them and specific star formation rates. In all galaxies, we also find a strong correlation between extraplanar and midplane radial H$\alpha$ profiles. Using our MUSE data, we investigate the origin of eDIG via kinematics. We find ionized gas rotation velocity lags above the midplane with values between 10 and 27 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$. While we do find hints of an accretion origin for the ionized gas in ESO 157-49, IC 217, and IC 1553, overall the ionized gas kinematics of our galaxies do not match a steady galaxy model or any simplistic model of accretion or internal origin for the gas. We also construct standard diagnostic diagrams and emission-line maps (EW(H$\alpha$), [NII]/H$\alpha$, [SII]//H$\alpha$, [OIII]/H$\beta$) and find regions consistent with mixed OB star and hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) ionization, and mixed OB-shock ionization. Our results suggest that OB stars are the primary driver of eDIG ionization, while both HOLMES and shocks may locally contribute to the ionization of eDIG to a significant degree. Context: The far-infrared (FIR) and sub-millimeter (submm) emissivity of the Milky Way (MW) cirrus is an important benchmark for dust grain models. Dust masses in other galaxies are generally derived from the FIR/submm using the emission properties of these MW-calibrated models. Aims: We seek to derive the FIR/submm emissivity in nine nearby spiral galaxies to check its compatibility with MW cirrus measurements. Methods: We obtained values of the emissivity at 70 to 500 um, using maps of dust emission from the Herschel satellite and of gas surface density from the THINGS and HERACLES surveys on a scale generally corresponding to 440 pc. We studied the variation of the emissivity with the surface brightness ratio I(250um)/I(500um), a proxy for the intensity of the interstellar radiation field heating the dust. Results: We find that the average value of the emissivity agrees with MW estimates for pixels sharing the same color as the cirrus, namely, for I(250um)/I(500um) = 4.5. For I(250um)/I(500um) > 5, the measured emissivity is instead up to a factor ~2 lower than predicted from MW dust models heated by stronger radiation fields. Regions with higher I(250um)/I(500um) are preferentially closer to the galactic center and have a higher overall (stellar+gas) surface density and molecular fraction. The results do not depend strongly on the adopted CO-to-molecular conversion factor and do not appear to be affected by the mixing of heating conditions. Conclusions: Our results confirm the validity of MW dust models at low density, but are at odds with predictions for grain evolution in higher density environments. If the lower-than-expected emissivity at high I(250um)/I(500um) is the result of intrinsic variations in the dust properties, it would imply an underestimation of the dust mass surface density of up to a factor ~2 when using current dust models., 16 pages, 11 figures, A&A accepted

The environment of NGC 1052 has recently attracted much attention because of the presence of low-surface-brightness galaxies (LSBGs) with apparently "exotic"properties, making it a region of high interest for the detection of new objects. We used public deep photometric data from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey to carry out a comprehensive search for LSBGs over a wide region of 6 × 6 degrees, equivalent to 2 × 2 Mpc at the distance of NGC 1052. We detected 42 LSBGs with reff > 5 arcsec and μg(0) > 24 mag arcsec-2, of which 20 are previously undetected objects. Among all the newly detected objects, RCP 32 stands out with extreme properties: reff = 23.0 arcsec and ⟨ μg⟩ eff = 28.6 mag arcsec-2. This makes RCP 32 one of the lowest surface brightness galaxies ever detected through integrated photometry, located at just 10 arcmin from the extensively studied NGC 1052-DF2. We explored the presence of globular clusters (GCs) in the LSBGs. We marginally detected a GC system in RCP 32, and argue that this LSBG is of great interest for follow-up observations given its extremely low baryon density. After analyzing the distribution of galaxies with available spectroscopy, we identified a large-scale structure of approximately 1 Mpc that is well isolated in redshift space and centered on NGC 1052. The spatial correlation analysis between the LSBGs and this large-scale structure suggests their association. However, when exploring the distribution of effective radius, we find an overpopulation of large LSBGs (reff > 15 arcsec) located close to the line of sight of NGC 1052. We argue that this is suggestive of a substructure with similar radial velocity in sight projection, but at a closer distance, to which some of these apparently larger LSBGs could be associated. However. possible effects derived from tidal interactions are worthy of further study. Identifying very high-redshift galaxies is crucial for understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies. However, many questions still remain, and the uncertainty on the epoch of reionization is large. In this approach, some models allow a double-reionization scenario, although the number of confirmed detections at very high $z$ is still too low to serve as observational proof. The main goal of this project is studying whether we can search for Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z \sim 9$ using a narrow-band (NB) filter that was specifically designed by our team and was built for this experiment. We used the NB technique to select candidates by measuring the flux excess due to the Ly$\alpha$ emission. The observations were taken with an NB filter (full width at half minimum of 11 nm and central wavelength $\lambda_{c} = 1.257 \mu$m) and the CIRCE near-infrared camera for the GTC. We describe a data reduction procedure that was especially optimized to minimize instrumental effects. With a total exposure time of 18.3 hours, the final NB image covers an area of $\sim 6.7$ arcmin$^{2}$, which corresponds to a comoving volume of $1.1 \times 10^{3}$ Mpc$^{3}$ at $z = 9.3$. We pushed the source detection to its limit, which allows us to analyze an initial sample of 97 objects. We detail the different criteria we applied to select the candidates. The criteria included visual verifications in different photometric bands. None of the objects resembled a reliable LAE, however, and we found no robust candidate down to an emission-line flux of $2.9 \times 10^{-16}$ erg s$^{-1} $cm$^{-2}$, which corresponds to a Ly$\alpha$ luminosity limit of $3 \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We derive an upper limit on the Ly$\alpha$ luminosity function at $z \sim 9$ that agrees well with previous constraints. We present the results from an analysis of deep Herschel far-infrared (far-IR) observations of the edge-on disc galaxy NGC 3079. The point spread function-cleaned Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) images at 100 and 160 μm display a 25 × 25 kpc2 X-shape structure centred on the nucleus that is similar in extent and orientation to that seen in H α, X-rays, and the far-ultraviolet. One of the dusty filaments making up this structure is detected in the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver 250 μm map out to ∼25 kpc from the nucleus. The match between the far-IR filaments and those detected at other wavelengths suggests that the dusty material has been lifted out of the disc by the same large-scale galactic wind that has produced the other structures in this object. A closer look at the central 10 × 10 kpc2 region provides additional support for this scenario. The dust temperatures traced by the 100-160 μm flux ratios in this region are enhanced within a biconical region centred on the active galactic nucleus, aligned along the minor axis of the galaxy, and coincident with the well-known double-lobed cm-wave radio structure and H α-X-ray nuclear superbubbles. PACS imaging spectroscopy of the inner 6 kpc region reveals broad [C ii] 158 μm emission line profiles and OH 79 μm absorption features along the minor axis of the galaxy with widths well in excess of those expected from beam smearing of the disc rotational motion. This provides compelling evidence that the cool material traced by the [C ii] and OH features directly interacts with the nuclear ionized and relativistic outflows traced by the H α, X-ray, and radio emission.

We present the MaNGA PyMorph photometric Value Added Catalogue (MPP-VAC-DR17) and the MaNGA Deep Learning Morphological VAC (MDLM-VAC-DR17) for the final data release of the MaNGA survey, which is part of the SDSS Data Release 17 (DR17). The MPP-VAC-DR17 provides photometric parameters from Sèrsic and Sèrsic+Exponential fits to the 2D surface brightness profiles of the MaNGA DR17 galaxy sample in the $g$, $r$, and $i$ bands (e.g. total fluxes, half light radii, bulge-disk fractions, ellipticities, position angles, etc.). The MDLM-VAC-DR17 provides Deep Learning-based morphological classifications for the same galaxies. The MDLM-VAC-DR17 includes a number of morphological properties: e.g., a T-Type, a finer separation between elliptical and S0, as well as the identification of edge-on and barred galaxies. While the MPP-VAC-DR17 simply extends the MaNGA PyMorph photometric VAC published in the SDSS Data Release 15 (MPP-VAC-DR15) to now include galaxies which were added to make the final DR17, the MDLM-VAC-DR17 implements some changes and improvements compared to the previous release (MDLM-VAC-DR15): namely, the low-end of the T-Types are better recovered in this new version. The catalogue also includes a separation between Early- or Late-type Galaxies (ETG, LTG), which classifies the two populations in a complementary way to the T-Type, especially at the intermediate types (-1 < T-Type < 2), where the T-Type values show a large scatter. In addition, $k-$fold based uncertainties on the classifications are also provided. To ensure robustness and reliability, we have also visually inspected all the images. The HERON project is aimed at studying haloes and low surface brightness details near galaxies. In this second HERON paper we consider in detail deep imaging (down to surface brightness of ∼28 mag/arcsec2 in the r band) for 35 galaxies, viewed edge-on. We confirm a range of low surface brightness features previously described in the literature but also report new ones. We classify the observed outer shapes of the galaxies into three main types (and their prototypes): disc/diamond-like (NGC 891), oval (NGC 4302), and boxy (NGC 3628). We show that the shape of the outer disc in galaxies does not often follow the general 3D model of an exponential disc: 17 galaxies in our sample exhibit oval or even boxy isophotes at the periphery. Also, we show that the less flattened the outer disc is, the more oval or boxy its structure. Many galaxies in our sample have an asymmetric outer structure. We propose that the observed diversity of the galaxy outer shapes is defined by the merger history and its intensity: if no recent multiple minor or single major merging took place, the outer shape is diamond-like or discy. Aims. We study how the upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory can be employed to constrain the physical properties of normal star-forming galaxies (main-sequence galaxies). Because the majority of the observed LSST objects will have no auxiliary data, we use simulated LSST data and existing real observations to test the reliability of estimates of the physical properties of galaxies, such as their star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass (Mstar), and dust luminosity (Ldust). We focus on normal star-forming galaxies because they form the majority of the galaxy population in the universe and are therefore more likely to be observed with the LSST. Methods. We performed a simulation of LSST observations and uncertainties of 50 385 real galaxies within the redshift range 0 z Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP) survey. Our analysis focused on two fields, ELAIS N1 and COSMOS. To obtain the physical properties of the galaxies, we fit their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using the Code Investigating GALaxy Emission. We simulated the LSST data by convolving the SEDs fitted by employing the multi-wavelength observations. We compared the main galaxy physical properties, such as SFR, Mstar, and Ldust obtained from the fit of the observed multi-wavelength photometry of galaxies (from the UV to the far-IR) to those obtained from the simulated LSST optical measurements alone. Results. We present the catalogue of simulated LSST observations for 23 291 main-sequence galaxies in the ELAIS N1 field and for 9093 galaxies in the COSMOS field. It is available in the HELP virtual observatory. The stellar masses estimated based on the LSST measurements agree with the full UV to far-IR SED estimates because they mainly depend on the UV and optical emission, which is well covered by LSST in the considered redshift range. Instead, we obtain a clear overestimate of the dust-related properties (SFR, Ldust, Mstar) estimated with the LSST alone. They are highly correlated with redshift. We investigate the cause of this overestimate and conclude that it is related to an overestimate of the dust attenuation in both UV and near-IR. We find that it is necessary to employ auxiliary rest-frame mid-IR observations, simulated UV observations, or the far-UV attenuation (AFUV)-Mstar relation to correct for the overestimate. We also deliver the correction formula log10(SFRLSST/SFRreal) = 0.26 ⋅ z2 − 0.94 ⋅ z + 0.87. It is based on the 32 384 MS galaxies detected with Herschel.

With the dramatic rise in high-quality galaxy data expected from Euclid and Vera C. Rubin Observatory, there will be increasing demand for fast high-precision methods for measuring galaxy fluxes. These will be essential for inferring the redshifts of the galaxies. In this paper, we introduce LUMOS, a deep learning method to measure photometry from galaxy images. LUMOS builds on BKGNET, an algorithm to predict the background and its associated error, and predicts the background-subtracted flux probability density function. We have developed LUMOS for data from the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS), an imaging survey using a 40 narrow-band filter camera (PAUCam). PAUCam images are affected by scattered light, displaying a background noise pattern that can be predicted and corrected for. On average, LUMOS increases the SNR of the observations by a factor of 2 compared to an aperture photometry algorithm. It also incorporates other advantages like robustness towards distorting artefacts, e.g. cosmic rays or scattered light, the ability of deblending and less sensitivity to uncertainties in the galaxy profile parameters used to infer the photometry. Indeed, the number of flagged photometry outlier observations is reduced from 10 to 2 per cent, comparing to aperture photometry. Furthermore, with LUMOS photometry, the photo-z scatter is reduced by ≈10 per cent with the Deepz machine-learning photo-z code and the photo-z outlier rate by 20 per cent. Context. In recent years, a new generation of large-scale imaging surveys have probed wide field regions for the first time around some nearby galaxies in an unprecedentedly low surface-brightness regime (∼28.0-29.0 mag arcsec-2). This provides the chance to discover very faint dwarf satellites by means of systematic visual inspection of these public deep images. Aims. In this paper, we report the first results of a systematic survey of faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the vicinity of the bright late-type spiral galaxy NGC 253 by means of a visual inspection of the images taken by the Dark Energy Survey. Methods. We performed a new NGC 253 satellite search using co-added image cutouts reprocessed in the DESI Legacy image surveys. We used GALFIT software to investigate the photometric and structural properties of three dwarf galaxies. Results. We report the discovery of three new dwarf galaxies in the vicinity of the brightest member of the Sculptor filament, the late-type spiral NGC 253, located at a distance of 3.7 Mpc towards Anti-Virgo. We name them Do II, Do III, and Do IV. Assuming they are companions of NGC 253, their total absolute V-magnitudes fall in the -7 to -9 mag range, which is typical for dwarf satellites in the local Universe. The central surface brightness tends to be extremely low for all three discovered dwarfs and falls roughly in the range of 25-26 mag arcsec-2 in g-band. Using known data on distances and velocities of galaxies, we estimate the total virial mass of the NGC 253 group to be 8 × 1011 M⊙ , which gives a virial radius of R200 = 186 kpc and a turn-around radius of 706 kpc. We also discuss the possible existence of a spatially flattened and velocity-correlated satellite system around NGC 253. This large-scale structure is orientated almost edge-on to the line of sight. The possible plane of satellites is only 31 kpc thick with a minor-to-major axis ratio of 0.14. Four out of five galaxies with measured velocities follow a common velocity trend similar to those observed in the planes of satellites around the Andromeda and Centaurus A galaxies. Spiral structure is ubiquitous in the Universe, and the pitch angle of arms in spiral galaxies provide an important observable in efforts to discriminate between different mechanisms of spiral arm formation and evolution. In this paper, we present a hierarchical Bayesian approach to galaxy pitch angle determination, using spiral arm data obtained through the Galaxy Builder citizen science project. We present a new approach to deal with the large variations in pitch angle between different arms in a single galaxy, which obtains full posterior distributions on parameters. We make use of our pitch angles to examine previously reported links between bulge and bar strength and pitch angle, finding no correlation in our data (with a caveat that we use observational proxies for both bulge size and bar strength which differ from other work). We test a recent model for spiral arm winding, which predicts uniformity of the cotangent of pitch angle between some unknown upper and lower limits, finding our observations are consistent with this model of transient and recurrent spiral pitch angle as long as the pitch angle at which most winding spirals dissipate or disappear is larger than 10°.

Context. The extragalactic vision we have through the Milky Way is very unclear. There is significant extinction of the optical emission from objects located in the region called the zone of avoidance (ZOA). NIR wavelengths are less affected by extinction, and therefore the infrared surveys in this zone are a potential source of astronomical discoveries. Nevertheless, these observations need to be compared with cosmological simulations in order to carry out high−accuracy studies. Aims. Our aim is to identify extragalactic sources in the ZOA, using infrared images of the VVV survey. We consider mock galaxy catalogues in order to interpret observational results. Methods. We studied a region of 1.636 square degrees corresponding to the VVV tile b204. Using SExtractor, we analysed photometric data generating a catalogue of extended sources in this area. In order to confirm these sources as galaxy candidates we visually inspected RGB images looking for typical galaxy features. Using 2MASX and GCMW catalogued sources we tested completeness and contamination of our catalogue and define suitable colour cuts to select galaxies. We also compared the observational results with those obtained from two semi-analytical models on Dark Matter simulations. One galaxy catalogue was constructed with the SAG semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, and the other one was constructed with the L-Galaxies semi-analytic model. Results. By adopting CLASS_STAR < 0.5, r1/2 > 0.7 arcsec and specific colour cuts (J − Ks > 0.97, J − H > 0 and H − Ks > 0) we generated an automatic catalogue of extended sources. We present deep far-infrared observations of the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 891 obtained with the Herschel Space Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The maps confirm the detection of thermal emission from the inner circumgalactic medium (halo) and spatially resolve a dusty superbubble and a dust spur (filament). The dust temperature of the halo component is lower than that of the disc but increases across a region of diameter ≈8.0 kpc extending at least 7.7 kpc vertically from one side of the disc, a region we call a superbubble because of its association with thermal X-ray emission and a minimum in the synchrotron scale height. This outflow is breaking through the thick disc and developing into a galactic wind, which is of particular interest because NGC 891 is not considered a starburst galaxy; the star formation rate surface density, 0.03 M⊙ yr-1 kpc-2, and gas fraction, just 10 per cent in the inner disc, indicate the threshold for wind formation is lower than previous work has suggested. We conclude that the star formation surface density is sufficient for superbubble blowout into the halo, but the cosmic ray electrons may play a critical role in determining whether this outflow develops into a fountain or escapes from the gravitational potential. The high dust-to-gas ratio in the dust spur suggests the material was pulled out of NGC 891 through the collision of a minihalo with the disc of NGC 891. We conclude that NGC 891 offers an example of both feedback and satellite interactions transporting dust into the halo of a typical galaxy.

We report on the detection of a black hole (NGC 1850 BH1) in the ∼100-Myr-old massive cluster NGC 1850 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is in a binary system with a main-sequence turn-off star (4.9 ± 0.4 M·), which is starting to fill its Roche lobe and is becoming distorted. Using 17 epochs of Very Large Telescope/Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer observations, we detected radial velocity variations exceeding 300 km s-1 associated with the target star, linked to the ellipsoidal variations measured by the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment in the optical bands. Under the assumption of a semidetached system, the simultaneous modelling of radial velocity and light curves constrains the orbital inclination of the binary to 38° ± 2°, resulting in a true mass of the unseen companion of 11.1 -2.4+2.1\M⊙. This represents the first direct dynamical detection of a black hole in a young massive cluster, opening up the possibility of studying the initial mass function and the early dynamical evolution of such compact objects in high-density environments., SS, NB and ICZ acknowledge financial support from the European Research Council (ERC-CoG-646928, Multi-Pop). Subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) is a popular technique for assigning galaxy mass or luminosity to haloes produced in N-body simulations. The method works by matching the cumulative number functions of the galaxy and halo properties, and is therefore sensitive both to the precise definitions of those properties and to the selection criteria used to define the samples. Further dependence follows when SHAM parameters are calibrated with galaxy clustering, which is known to depend strongly on the manner in which galaxies are selected. In this paper we introduce a new parametrization for SHAM and derive the best-fitting SHAM parameters as a function of various properties of the selection of the galaxy sample and of the photometric definition, including Sérsic versus Petrosian magnitudes, stellar masses versus r-band magnitudes, and optical (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) versus HI (ALFALFA) selection. In each case we calculate the models' goodness-of-fit to measurements of the projected two-point galaxy correlation function. In the optically selected samples we find strong evidence that the scatter in the galaxy-halo connection increases towards the faint end, and that AM performs better with luminosity than stellar mass. The SHAM parameters of optically and HI-selected galaxies are mutually exclusive, with the latter suggesting the importance of properties beyond halo mass. We provide best-fitting parameters for the SHAM galaxy-halo connection as a function of each of our input choices, extending the domain of validity of the model while reducing potential systematic error in its use. © 2021 The Author(s)., RS was supported by the Oxford Astrophysics Summer Research Programme. MiniJPAS is a ∼1 deg2 imaging survey of the AEGIS field in 60 bands, performed to demonstrate the scientific potential of the upcoming Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS). Full coverage of the 3800–9100 Å range with 54 narrow-band filters, in combination with 6 optical broad-band filters, allows for extremely accurate photometric redshifts (photo-z), which, applied over areas of thousands of square degrees, will enable new applications of the photo-z technique, such as measurement of baryonic acoustic oscillations. In this paper we describe the method we used to obtain the photo-z that is included in the publicly available miniJPAS catalogue, and characterise the photo-z performance. We built photo-spectra with 100 Å resolution based on forced-aperture photometry corrected for point spread function. Systematic offsets in the photometry were corrected by applying magnitude shifts obtained through iterative fitting with stellar population synthesis models. We computed photo-z with a customised version of LePhare, using a set of templates that is optimised for the J-PAS filter-set. We analysed the accuracy of miniJPAS photo-z and their dependence on multiple quantities using a subsample of 5266 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts from SDSS and DEEP, which we find to be representative of the whole r < 23 miniJPAS sample. Formal 1σ uncertainties for the photo-z that are calculated with the ∆χ 2 method underestimate the actual redshift errors. The odds parameter has a stronger correlation with |∆z| and accurately reproduces the probability of a redshift outlier (|∆z| > 0.03), regardless of the magnitude, redshift, or spectral type of the sources. We show that the two main summary statistics characterising the photo-z accuracy for a population of galaxies (σNMAD and η) can be predicted by the distribution of odds in this population, and we use this to estimate the statistics for the whole miniJPAS sample. At r < 23, there are ∼17 500 galaxies per deg2 with valid photo-z estimates, ∼4200 of which are expected to have |∆z| < 0.003. The typical error is σNMAD = 0.013 with an outlier rate η = 0.39. The target photo-z accuracy σNMAD = 0.003 is achieved for odds > 0.82 with η = 0.05, at the cost of decreasing the density of selected galaxies to n ∼ 5200 deg−2 (∼2600 of which have |∆z| < 0.003).

We have explored the properties of a peculiar object detected in deep optical imaging and located at the tip of an H » I tail emerging from Hickson Compact Group 16. Using multiband photometry from infrared to ultraviolet, we were able to constrain its stellar age to 58-9+22 Myr with a rather high metallicity of [Fe/H] = -0.16-0.41+0.43 for its stellar mass of M- = 4.2 × 106 Mpdbl, a typical signature of tidal dwarf galaxies. The structural properties of this object are similar to those of diffuse galaxies, with a round and featureless morphology, a large effective radius (reff = 1.5 kpc), and a low surface brightness (μg-eff = 25.6 mag arcsec-2). Assuming that the object is dynamically stable and able to survive in the future, its fading in time via the aging of its stellar component will make it undetectable in optical observations in just ∼2 Gyr of evolution, even in the deepest current or future optical surveys. Its high H » I mass, M(HI) = 3.9 × 108 Mpdbl, and future undetectable stellar component will make the object match the observational properties of dark galaxies, that is, dark matter halos that failed to turn gas into stars. We explore the relation between diffuse intracluster light (central galaxy included) and the galaxy cluster (baryonic and dark) matter distribution using a sample of 528 clusters at 0.2 ≤ z ≤ 0.35 found in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 1 data. The surface brightness of the diffuse light shows an increasing dependence on cluster total mass at larger radius, and appears to be self-similar with a universal radial dependence after scaling by cluster radius. We also compare the diffuse light radial profiles to the cluster (baryonic and dark) matter distribution measured through weak lensing and find them to be comparable. The IllustrisTNG galaxy formation simulation, TNG300, offers further insight into the connection between diffuse stellar mass and cluster matter distributions – the simulation radial profile of the diffuse stellar component does not have a similar slope with the total cluster matter content, although that of the cluster satellite galaxies does. Regardless of the radial trends, the amount of diffuse stellar mass has a low-scatter scaling relation with cluster’s total mass in the simulation, out-performing the total stellar mass of cluster satellite galaxies. We conclude that there is no consistent evidence yet on whether or not diffuse light is a faithful radial tracer of the cluster matter distribution. Nevertheless, both observational and simulation results reveal that diffuse light is an excellent indicator of the cluster’s total mass.

Context: Galaxies either live in a cluster, a group, or in a field environment. In the hierarchical framework, the group environment bridges the field to the cluster environment, as field galaxies form groups before aggregating into clusters. In principle, environmental mechanisms, such as galaxy–galaxy interactions, can be more efficient in groups than in clusters due to lower velocity dispersion, which lead to changes in the properties of galaxies. This change in properties for group galaxies before entering the cluster environment is known as preprocessing. Whilst cluster and field galaxies are well studied, the extent to which galaxies become preprocessed in the group environment is unclear. Aims: We investigate the structural properties of cluster and group galaxies by studying the Fornax main cluster and the infalling Fornax A group, exploring the effects of galaxy preprocessing in this showcase example. Additionally, we compare the structural complexity of Fornax galaxies to those in the Virgo cluster and in the field. Methods: Our sample consists of 582 galaxies from the Fornax main cluster and Fornax A group. We quantified the light distributions of each galaxy based on a combination of aperture photometry, Sérsic+PSF (point spread function) and multi-component decompositions, and non-parametric measures of morphology. From these analyses, we derived the galaxy colours, structural parameters, non-parametric morphological indices (Concentration C; Asymmetry A, Clumpiness S; Gini G; second order moment of light M₂₀), and structural complexity based on multi-component decompositions. These quantities were then compared between the Fornax main cluster and Fornax A group. The structural complexity of Fornax galaxies were also compared to those in Virgo and in the field. Results: We find significant (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test p-value < α = 0.05) differences in the distributions of quantities derived from Sérsic profiles (g′−r′, r′−i′, Re, and μ̄e,r′), and non-parametric indices (A and S) between the Fornax main cluster and Fornax A group. Fornax A group galaxies are typically bluer, smaller, brighter, and more asymmetric and clumpy. Moreover, we find significant cluster-centric trends with r′−i′, Re, and μ̄e,r′, as well as A, S, G, and M₂₀ for galaxies in the Fornax main cluster. This implies that galaxies falling towards the centre of the Fornax main cluster become fainter, more extended, and generally smoother in their light distribution. Conversely, we do not find significant group-centric trends for Fornax A group galaxies. We find the structural complexity of galaxies (in terms of the number of components required to fit a galaxy) to increase as a function of the absolute r′-band magnitude (and stellar mass), with the largest change occurring between −14 mag ≲Mr′ ≲ −19 mag (7.5 ≲ log₁₀(M*/M⊙) ≲ 9.7). This same trend was found in galaxy samples from the Virgo cluster and in the field, which suggests that the formation or maintenance of morphological structures (e.g., bulges, bar) are largely due to the stellar mass of the galaxies, rather than the environment they reside in.

The ultraviolet (UV) to sub-millimetre (submm) spectral energy distribution of galaxies can be roughly divided into two sections: the stellar emission (attenuated by dust) at UV to near-infrared wavelengths and dust emission at longer wavelengths. In Dobbels et al. (2020), we show that these two sections are strongly related, and we can predict the global dust properties from the integrated UV to mid-infrared emission with the help of machine learning techniques. We investigate if these machine learning techniques can also be extended to resolved scales. Our aim is to predict resolved maps of the specific dust luminosity, specific dust mass, and dust temperature starting from a set of surface brightness images from UV to mid-infrared wavelengths. We used a selection of nearby galaxies retrieved from the DustPedia sample, in addition to M31 and M33. These were convolved and resampled to a range of pixel sizes, ranging from 150 pc to 3 kpc. We trained a random forest model which considers each pixel individually. We find that the predictions work well on resolved scales, with the dust mass and temperature having a similar root mean square error as on global scales (0.32 dex and 3.15 K on 18" scales respectively), and the dust luminosity being noticeably better (0.11 dex). We find no significant dependence on the pixel scale. Predictions on individual galaxies can be biased, and we find that about two-thirds of the scatter can be attributed to scatter between galaxies (rather than within galaxies). A machine learning approach can be used to create dust maps, with its resolution being only limited to the input bands, thus achieving a higher resolution than Herschel. These dust maps can be used to improve global estimates of dust properties, they can lead to a better estimate of dust attenuation, and they can be used as a constraint on cosmological simulations that trace dust., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted by A&A

Alarcon, A., et al. We present - and make publicly available - accurate and precise photometric redshifts in the ACS footprint from the COSMOS field for objects with iAB ≤ 23. The redshifts are computed using a combination of narrow-band photometry from PAUS, a survey with 40 narrow bands spaced at 100\,\mathring{\rm A} intervals covering the range from 4500 to 8500\,\mathring{\rm A}, and 26 broad, intermediate, and narrow bands covering the UV, visible and near-infrared spectrum from the COSMOS2015 catalogue. We introduce a new method that models the spectral energy distributions as a linear combination of continuum and emission-line templates and computes its Bayes evidence, integrating over the linear combinations. The correlation between the UV luminosity and the O ii line is measured using the 66 available bands with the zCOSMOS spectroscopic sample, and used as a prior which constrains the relative flux between continuum and emission-line templates. The flux ratios between the O ii line and Hα, Hβ and \mathrm{O\,{\small III}} are similarly measured and used to generate the emission-line templates. Comparing to public spectroscopic surveys via the quantity Δz (zphoto - zspec)/(1 + zspec), we find the photometric redshifts to be more precise than previous estimates, with σ68(Δz) ≈ (0.003, 0.009) for galaxies at magnitude iAB ∼18 and iAB ∼23, respectively, which is three times and 1.66 times tighter than COSMOS2015. Additionally, we find the redshifts to be very accurate on average, yielding a median of the Δz distribution compatible with |median(Δz)| ≤ 0.001 at all redshifts and magnitudes considered. Both the added PAUS data and new methodology contribute significantly to the improved results. The catalogue produced with the technique presented here is expected to provide a robust redshift calibration for current and future lensing surveys, and allows one to probe galaxy formation physics in an unexplored luminosity-redshift regime, thanks to its combination of depth, completeness, and excellent redshift precision and accuracy. We implement a linear model for mitigating the effect of observing conditions and other sources of contamination in galaxy clustering analyses. Our treatment improves upon the fiducial systematics treatment of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 1 (Y1) cosmology analysis in four crucial ways. Specifically, our treatment: 1) does not require decisions as to which observable systematics are significant and which are not, allowing for the possibility of multiple maps adding coherently to give rise to significant bias even if no single map leads to a significant bias by itself; 2) characterizes both the statistical and systematic uncertainty in our mitigation procedure, allowing us to propagate said uncertainties into the reported cosmological constraints; 3) explicitly exploits the full spatial structure of the galaxy density field to differentiate between cosmology-sourced and systematics-sourced fluctuations within the galaxy density field; 4) is fully automated, and can therefore be trivially applied to any data set. The updated correlation function for the DES Y1 redMaGiC catalog minimally impacts the cosmological posteriors from that analysis. Encouragingly, our analysis does improve the goodness of fit statistic of the DES Y1 3$\times$2pt data set ($\Delta \chi^2 = -6.5$ with no additional parameters). This improvement is due in nearly equal parts to both the change in the correlation function and the added statistical and systematic uncertainties associated with our method. We present an 850-μm mosaic map and extracted catalogue of submillimetre sources in the extended North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) region over about 2 deg2. The 850-μm map is constructed using newly obtained observations by SCUBA-2 at the East Asian Observatory’s James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, carried out using the observatory’s large programme opportunities. The recent 850-μm survey has extended the submillimetre data coverage by almost a factor of 4 compared to previous surveys, with a depth of σrms = 1.0–2.3 mJy beam−1. The catalogue contains 549 sources selected above a significance level of 4σ, where the false-detection rate is 10 per cent; a higher threshold of 4.5σ is required in order to achieve a false-detection rate below 3 per cent, which results in 342 sources being selected. Despite the large spatial variation of the noise, the deboosted flux density of sources is comparable to results from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS), which covered the central 0.6 deg2 of our survey area with better sensitivity. We construct the source counts at 850 μm, finding results in agreement with other 850-μm surveys in cosmological blank fields over S850 = 4–15 mJy. We find a slight excess of bright galaxies (S850 > 15 mJy), which can be considered to be at ɀphot = 2–4. The 850-μm data adds valuable long-wavelength information to mid-infrared-selected sources from the AKARI NEP-deep and NEP-wide surveys, which will be helpful in preparing for future near-infrared to millimetre wavelength observations in the NEP region. Our 850-μm mosaic map and source catalogue will be made publicly available.

The next generation of data-intensive surveys are bound to produce a vast amount of data, which can be dealt with using machine-learning methods to explore possible correlations within the multi-dimensional parameter space. In this paper, we extend the source detection in the GOODS-ALMA field (69 arcmin$^2$, rms sensitivity $\sigma$ $\simeq$ 0.18 mJy.beam$^{-1}$), to deeper levels than presented in Franco et al. (2018). Using positional information at 3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m (from Spitzer-IRAC), we explore the presence of galaxies detected at 1.1 mm with ALMA below our original blind detection limit of 4.8-$\sigma$ at which the number of spurious sources starts to dominate over that of real sources. In this Supplementary Catalog, we find a total of 16 galaxies, including 2 galaxies with no counterpart in HST images (also known as optically-dark galaxies) down to a 5$\sigma$ limiting depth of H = 28.2 AB (HST/WFC3 F160W). This brings the total sample of GOODS-ALMA 1.1 mm sources to 35 galaxies. Galaxies in the new sample cover a wider dynamic range in redshift ($z$ = 0.65 - 4.73), are on average twice as large (1.3 vs 0.65 kpc) and and have lower stellar mass (M$_{\star}^{\rm SC}$ = 7.6$\times$10$^{10}$M$_\odot$ vs M$_{\star}^{\rm MC}$ = 1.2$\times$10$^{11}$M$_\odot$). Although exhibiting larger physical sizes, these galaxies have still far-infrared sizes significantly more compact than inferred from their optical emission. We show that the astrometry of the HST image does not only suffer from a global astrometric shift, as already discussed in previous papers, but also from local shifts. These distortions were artificially introduced in the process of building the mosaic of the GOODS-South HST image. By comparing the positions of almost 400 galaxies detected by HST, Pan-STARRS and ALMA, we create a distortion map which can be used to correct for these astrometric issues., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures. In this paper we study the properties of the six optically dark galaxies detected in the 69 arcmin^2 GOODS-ALMA 1.1mm continuum survey. While none of them are listed in the deepest H-band based CANDELS catalog in the GOODS-South field down to H=28.16AB, we were able to de-blend two of them from their bright neighbor and measure an $H$-band flux for them. We note that AGS4 and AGS15 have H=25.23, 27.11AB respectively. Their extreme proximity (0.50", 0.27") to a bright optical source and their extreme faintness prevented them from being included in the H-band catalog. We present the spectroscopic scan follow-up of five of the six sources with ALMA band 4. All are detected in the 2mm continuum with signal-to-noise ratios higher than eight. One emission line is detected in AGS4 (��_{obs} =151.44GHz with a S/N=8.58) and AGS17 (��_{obs} =154.78GHz with a S/N=10.23), which we interpret in both cases as being due to the CO(6-5) line at z^{AGS4}_{spec}=3.556 and z^{AGS4}_{spec}=3.467, respectively. These redshifts match both the probability distribution of the photometric redshifts derived from the UV to near-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and the far-infrared SEDs for typical dust temperatures of galaxies at these redshifts. We present evidence that nearly 70% (4/6 of galaxies) of the optically dark galaxies belong to the same overdensity of galaxies at z~3.5. overdensity The most massive one, AGS24 (M_{\star} = 10^{11.32^{+0.02}_{-0.19}} M_{\odot}), is the most massive galaxy without an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at $z$\,>\,3 in the GOODS-ALMA field. It falls in the very center of the peak of the galaxy surface density, which suggests that the surrounding overdensity is a proto-cluster in the process of virialization and that AGS24 is the candidate progenitor of the future brightest cluster galaxy (BCG)., 17 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, accepted by A&A

The $AKARI$ infrared (IR) space telescope conducted two surveys (Deep and Wide) in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) field to find more than 100 000 IR sources using its infrared camera (IRC). IRC’s nine filters, which cover wavebands from 2 to 24 μm continuously, make $AKARI$ unique in comparison with other IR observatories such as $Spitzer$ or $WISE$. However, studies of the $AKARI$ NEP-Wide field sources had been limited due to the lack of follow-up observations in the ultraviolet (UV) and optical. In this work, we present the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope MegaPrime/MegaCam u-band source catalogue of the $AKARI$ NEP-Wide field. The observations were taken in seven nights in 2015 and 2016, resulting in 82 observed frames covering 3.6deg$^2$. The data reduction, image processing, and source extraction were performed in a standard procedure using the elixir pipeline and the astromatic software, and eventually 351 635 sources have been extracted. The data quality is discussed in two regions (shallow and deep) separately, due to the difference in the total integration time (4520 and 13 910 s). The 5$\sigma$ limiting magnitude, seeing full width at half-maximum, and the magnitude at 50per cent completeness are 25.38 mag (25.79 mag in the deep region), 0.82 arcsec (0.94 arcsec), and 25.06 mag (25.45 mag), respectively. The u-band data provide us with critical improvements to photometric redshifts and UV estimates of the precious infrared sources from the $AKARI$ space telescope.
