During Prehistory, past societies challenged numerous climatic and environmental changes, of unequal duration, varying intensity and within a global pattern of glacial/interglacial cycles. Therefore, understanding how these societies faced these environmental conditions and how they adapted is a crucial question for prehistorians. In that respect, the taxonomic study of charcoal remains, well preserved in archaeological sequences, provides information on the local woody environment, but also on human strategies of wood harvesting. This approach is often limited by several methodological (e.g. the need for a large amount of charcoal, types of deposits, ...) and interpretative issues (no information on the extent of forest cover, limitations in climatic interpretation, overlapping of ecological and economic information).In order to overcome these limitations, this work follows studies on the isotopic signal (δ13C) of wood and pioneering analogous studies on charcoal. The main objective is to develop a crossover approach (taxonomic and isotopic) in the study of charcoal from Upper Pleistocene and early Holocene sequences. The first part of this thesis focuses on the creation of a modern reference collection on Pinus sp. The second part studies the anthracological assemblages of nine diachronic archaeological sites (Southeastern France: les Canalettes [Mid. Paleo.], la Combette [Mid. Paleo.], Chauvet-Pont d’Arc [Upp. Paleo.], la Baume d’Oulen [Upp. Paleo. /Meso.], la Grotte aux Points [Upper Paleolithic, les Deux- Ouvertures [Upp. Paleo.], les Prés de Laure [Mid./Upp. Paleo], la Baume de Monthiver [Upper Paleo. / Meso.]; Northeastern France: Mutzig [Mid. Paleo.]).Through our modern reference collection, we show that the isotopic signal of Pinus charcoals can be used to study the climatic and environmental evolution on the long term (low frequency evolution) independently of their species and with the same degree of carbonization. By applying our method to archaeological sites, we identified a preferential conservation of charcoals with a low carbonization degree. This observation, coupled with the physiological response of ancient plants (adapted to atmospheric and climatic conditions), gives the mean δ13C signal a strong potential as a low frequency environmental and climatic proxy. Moreover, by obtaining a representative isotopic signal by “individual” or “grouped” analysis of charcoals, our method can be adapted to different archaeological contexts (characteristics of the material, conservation of the stratigraphy), with the additional advantages and disadvantages specific to each of these approaches (study of the variability of the signal, cost and time). Reliable results obtained with species other than Pinus (here, Betula, Juniperus) also support the versatility of this method. Furthermore, our study shows that signal variability can be used as a marker for changes in wood harvesting areas.In addition to our methodological contributions, this work brings new data on past environmental and climatic contexts. Finally, our study on archaeological sites spanning from the Middle Paleolithic to the Mesolithic contributes to the current debates on the relationship between societies and environment (wood management, mobility patterns, natural determinism, etc.).; Au cours de la Préhistoire, les sociétés du passé ont été confrontées à de nombreux changements climatiques et environnementaux, de durée inégale, d’intensité variable et s’inscrivant dans un schéma global de cycle glaciaire/interglaciaire. Dès lors, comprendre la façon dont les sociétés anciennes ont fait face à ces conditions environnementales et comment elles se sont adaptées est une question cruciale pour les préhistoriens. À cet égard, l’étude taxinomique des restes de charbon de bois, bien conservés dans les séquences archéologiques, fournit des informations non seulement sur l’environnement ligneux local, mais aussi sur les stratégies humaines de collecte du bois. Cette approche est confrontée à plusieurs verrous méthodologiques (ex : nécessité d’un grand nombre de charbon, type de dépôts, …) et interprétatifs (pas d’information sur l’étendue du couvert forestier, limite dans l’interprétation climatique, informations écologiques et économiques imbriquées). Afin de pallier ces verrous, ce travail s’inscrit dans la continuité des études sur le signal isotopique (δ13C) du bois et des études analogues pionnières sur charbons de bois. Le principal objectif est alors de développer une approche croisée (taxinomique et isotopique) dans l’étude des charbons de bois issus des séquences du Pléistocène supérieur et du début de l’Holocène. La première partie de cette thèse se concentre sur la création d’un référentiel actuel sur Pinus sp., puis la seconde sur l’étude des assemblages anthracologiques de neuf sites archéologiques diachroniques (Sud-Est de la France : les Canalettes [Paléo. moy.], la Combette [Paléo.moy.], Chauvet-Pont d’Arc [Paléo.sup.], la Baume d’Oulen [Paléo.sup./Méso.], la Grotte aux Points [Paléo.sup.], les Deux-Ouvertures [Paléo.sup.], les Prés de Laure [Paléo.moy./sup.], la Baume de Monthiver [Paléo.sup./Méso.] ; Nord-Est de la France : Mutzig [Paléo. Moy.]).Nous montrons, à travers notre référentiel, la possibilité d’utiliser le signal isotopique des charbons de Pinus, indépendamment de leur espèce et issus d’un même degré de carbonisation, pour étudier l’évolution climatique et environnementale sur le long terme (évolution basse fréquence). L’application de la méthode sur les sites archéologiques montre quant à elle une conservation préférentielle des charbons issus d’un faible degré de carbonisation. Ce constat, couplé à la réponse physiologique des plantes anciennes (adapté aux conditions atmosphériques et climatiques), procure au signal δ13C moyen un fort potentiel comme marqueur des évolutions environnementales et climatiques de basse fréquence. Plus encore, la possibilité d’obtenir un signal isotopique représentatif par l’analyse « individuelle » ou « groupée » des charbons, permet à notre méthode de s’adapter aux différents contextes archéologiques (caractéristiques du matériel, conservation de la stratigraphie), avec les avantages et inconvénients supplémentaires propres à chacune de ces approches (étude de la variabilité du signal, coût et temps). Les bons résultats obtenus avec d’autres essences que le Pinus (ici, Betula, Juniperus) appuient également sur la polyvalence de cette méthode. Par ailleurs, notre étude soulève la possibilité d’utiliser la variabilité du signal comme marqueur des changements d’aire de collecte du bois.Outre les apports méthodologiques, ce travail contribue à la connaissance du contexte environnemental et climatique passé. Enfin, l’étude des sites archéologiques du Paléolithique moyen au Mésolithique inscrit ce travail dans la réflexion actuelle autour de la relation sociétés/milieux (gestion du bois, schéma de mobilité, déterminisme naturel, …).

Climate change may reduce forest growth and increase forest mortality, which is connected to high carbon costs through reductions in gross primary production and net ecosystem exchange. Yet, the spatiotemporal patterns of vulnerability to both short-term extreme events and gradual environmental changes are quite uncertain across the species' limits of tolerance to dryness. Such information is fundamental for defining ecologically relevant upper limits of species tolerance to drought and, hence, to predict the risk of increased forest mortality and shifts in species composition. We investigate here to what extent the impact of short- and long-term environmental changes determines vulnerability to climate change of three evergreen conifers (Scots pine, silver fir, Norway spruce) and two deciduous hardwoods (European beech, sessile oak) tree species at their southernmost limits of distribution in the Mediterranean Basin. Finally, we simulated future forest growth under RCP 2.6 and 8.5 emission scenarios using a multispecies generalized linear mixed model. Our analysis provides four key insights into the patterns of species' vulnerability to climate change. First, site climatic marginality was significantly linked to the growth trends: increasing growth was related to less climatically limited sites. Second, estimated species-specific vulnerability did not match their a priori rank in drought tolerance: Scots pine and beech seem to be the most vulnerable species among those studied despite their contrasting physiologies. Third, adaptation to site conditions prevails over species-specific determinism in forest response to climate change. And fourth, regional differences in forests vulnerability to climate change across the Mediterranean Basin are linked to the influence of summer atmospheric circulation patterns, which are not correctly represented in global climate models. Thus, projections of forest performance should reconsider the traditional classification of tree species in functional types and critically evaluate the fine-scale limitations of the climate data generated by global climate models.

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is the most widely distributed tree species in this region (250 000ha). Scots pine is strongly impacted by repeated droughts since 2000, and by the intensification of pest attacks, such as mistletoe and the processionary moth. The wood based industry is at risk, not to mention the effects on biodiversity, ecosystem services and fire risk. This project aimed to : 1. Design a practical tool (BIOCLIMSOL) and a map allowing forest managers and owners to assess easily the level of vulnerability of Scots pine to climate change; 2. Assess ecological conditions (soil, topography, orientation, elevation ...) that may compensate or aggravate climate impacts); 3. Understand the short and long term impact of climate change and interannual variability on the radial growth of Pinus Sylvestris from a dendroecological study; 4. Measure objectively the present health status of Scots pine at regional level through crown transparency, dead branches and needle size and color, 4. Propose silvicultural recommendations to limit the risk of decline and dieback and sustain forest productivity. Field surveys use a network of 90 plots representative of Scots pine distribution area. The results highlight the high rate of defoliation of Scots pine at regional scale (48%) and the prominent role of mistletoe in this decline. The presence of mistletoe could be linked to climatic factors. The processionary moth reduces significantly Scots pine productivity were its attacks are recurrent. Site condition, stand density and tree age also play a significant role.; La région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur est la région de France la plus touchée par le changement climatique. Le pin sylvestre est la première essence de la région en termes de superficie (250 000ha) et de volume sur pied. Elle est fortement impactée par les sécheresses à répétition depuis les années 2000, et par la multiplication et l'intensification des attaques de parasites (Gui, chenille processionnaire). Les enjeux pour la filière bois sont donc forts sans compter les effets sur la biodiversité, la multifonctionnalité et le risque incendie qui sont accrus. Les objectifs réalisés dans ce projet sont : 1. Cartographier la sensibilité aux changements climatiques pour le pin sylvestre avec l'outil BIOCLIMSOL 2. Estimer les facteurs de compensation ou d'aggravation du climat (sol, topographie...) 3. Mieux cerner l'impact du climat et de ses évolutions sur la croissance radiale du pin sylvestre à court et long terme à partir d'une étude dendroécologique 4. évaluer l'état sanitaire actuel des peuplement sur toute la région, 5. Proposer des recommandations sylvicoles en vue de limiter le risque de dépérissement et soutenir la productivité des peuplements. Des relevés de terrain ont été réalisés sur 90 placettes. Les résultats mettent notamment en avant le fort taux de défoliation moyen du pin sylvestre (48%), un taux de mortalité élevé, et le rôle prépondérant du gui dans le dépérissement du pin sylvestre. La présence du gui est liée à des facteurs climatiques. La chenille processionnaire réduit significativement la productivité des peuplements dans les zones où elle sévit périodiquement. Les caractéristiques de la station, la densité et l'âge des peuplements jouent aussi un rôle significatif en interaction avec le climat.

The following work is focused in the study of the effects of forest management on a mixed forest of Pinus sylvestris and Fagus sylvatica on the pines growth at Aspurz, in the Pyrenees of Navarra. This study started in 1999 when the forest area that was going to be managed was chosen. The zone was divided in 3 blocs of 3 treatment repetitions: 0%, 20% and 30% (in 1999) – 40% (in 2009) of the basal area extracted from the forest in 9 different plots. The final objective of this study is to determine whether the thinning intensity has had any significant effects on the scots pine growth, how they keep after 9 years from the second and last thinning. During the field work, the trees were marked, and the diameters of all the trees and the height of five of each social class and plot were measured. After an analysis of the different parameters (number of trees, mean diameter, mean height and mean basal area of the different treatments) and a variance analysis to test the influence of the forest management treatment and the tree social class were performed through the programs “Excel” and “JMP”. Significant differences were obtained for some variables due to the treatment and the social class, but the main tendency of the results and the analysis proved that the thinning treatments were not anymore effective 9 years after the last and second intervention. Le travail présent est centré dans l’étude des effets des éclaircies forestières dans une forêt mixte de pin sylvestre et hêtre sur les pins sylvestres à Aspurz, aux Pyrénées de Navarre. L’étude a commencé en 1999 quand la surface du bois qui allait être éclairée a été choisie. Elle a été divisée par 3 blocs avec 3 répétitions de traitements d’éclairage : 0%, 20% et 30 % (en 1999) - 40% (en 2009) de la surface basale extraites dans un total de 9 parcelles. L’objectif général de ce projet est de déterminer si les intensités d’éclaircies ont eu un effet significatif diffèrent aux parcelles témoin sur la croissance des pins sylvestres ou si elles sont disparues. Pendant le travail sur champs, les arbres ont été marqués, et les diamètres de tous les arbres et les hauteurs de cinq arbres de chaque classe sociologique et chaque parcelle ont été mesurés. Après une analyse des différents paramètres (nombre d’arbres, diamètre moyen des arbres, hauteur moyenne des arbres et surface basale moyenne par traitement) et une analyse statistique de variance pour tester l’influence du traitement forestier ont été faits avec les programmes « Excel » et « JMP ». Des différences significatives ont été obtenues pour certaines variables en fonction du traitement et de la classe sociologique mais en gros il a été prouvé que les éclaircies n’ont plus d’effet sur cette forêt 9 ans après la dernière et deuxième intervention. Canopy transpiration (EC) is a large fraction of evapotranspiration, integrating physical and biological processes within the energy, water and carbon cycles of forests. Quantifying EC is of both scientific and practical importance, providing information relevant to questions ranging from energy partitioning to ecosystem services, such as primary productivity and water yield. We estimated EC of four pine stands differing in age, and growing on sandy soils. The stands consisted of two wide-ranging conifer species: Pinus taeda and Pinus sylvestris, in temperate and boreal zones, respectively. Combining results from these and published studies on all soil types, we derived an approach to estimate daily EC of pine forests, representing a wide range of conditions from 35 º S to 64 º N latitude. During the growing season and under moist soils, maximum daily EC (ECm) at day-length normalized vapor pressure deficit of 1 kPa (ECm-ref) increased by 0.55 ± 0.02 (mean ± standard error) mm d−1 for each unit increase of leaf area index (L) up to L = ~5, showing no sign of saturation within this range of quickly rising mutual shading. The initial rise of ECm with atmospheric demand was linearly related to ECm-ref. Both relations were unaffected by soil type. Consistent with theoretical prediction, daily EC was sensitive to decreasing soil moisture at an earlier point of relative extractable water in loamy than sandy soils. Our finding facilitates the estimation of daily EC of wide-ranging pine forests using remotely-sensed L and meteorological data. Endophytic fungi and ectomycorrhizal fungi co-exist in the mycorrhizal root tips of boreal forest trees.However, very little is known about the functional role they play in their host’s biology.The activity of enzymesresponsible for important biochemical processes is used to determine the functional role of root-associatedmycorrhizal fungi. However, enzyme activity is never studied in the presence of endophytic fungi in-planta. Theaims of this study were to investigate the effect of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) root-isolated fungal endophytes on the host plant root morphology, to determine their functional effects using host root-excreted enzyme activitymeasurements, and to compare them with roots colonized by decomposer and ectomycorrhizal fungal strains andnoncolonised Scots pine root tips.Our results show that endophytic fungi did not damage the pine roots incontrast to the decomposer fungi. The endophytic fungi penetrated the cortical cells of the host plant. The rootscolonised by endophytic fungi produce different exo-enzymes compared with those produced by roots colonizedby other fungal groups or noncolonized control root tips.Our results indicate that endophytic fungi are clearlya distinctive ecological group of fungi that have functional traits different from those of ectomycorrhizal anddecomposer fungi.; Les champignons endophytes et ectomycorhiziens coexistent dans les extrémités radiculaires mycorhi-ziennes des arbres de la forêt boréale.Cependant, on sait vraiment peu de choses du rôle fonctionnel qu’ils jouent dans la biologie de leur hôte. L’activité des enzymes responsables de processus biochimiques importants est utilisée pour expliquer le rôle fonctionnel des champignons mycorhiziens associés aux racines. Toutefois, l’activité enzymatique n’est jamais étudiée en présence de champignons endophytes « in planta ». Les buts de l’étude présente étaient d’examiner l’effet d’endophytes fongiques isolés de racines du pin sylvestre (Pinus sylvestris L.) sur la morphologie de la racine de la plante–hôte, de déterminer leur effet fonctionnel en utilisant des mesures de l’activité enzymatique excrétée par les racines de l’hôte et de les comparer aux racines colonisées par des souches de champignons décomposeurs et ectomycorhiziens et aux extrémités radiculaires de pin sylvestre non colonisées.Les résultats des auteurs montrent que les champignons endophytes n’endommagent pas les racines de pin comparativement aux champignons décomposeurs. Les champignons endophytes pénétraient les cellules corticales de la plante-hôte. Les racines colonisées par les champignons endophytes produisent différentes exo-enzymes comparativement a celles produites par les racines colonisées par d’autres groupes de champignons ou des extrémités radiculaires contrôles non colonisées.Leurs résultats indiquent que les champignons endophytes constituent clairement un groupe écologique distinctif de champignons qui possèdent des traits fonctionnels différents de ceux des champignons ectomycorhiziens et décomposeurs.

Scots pine in the Mediterranean region is one them. In this report, we studied factors responsible for Scots pine dieback in the Provence-Alpes Côte d'Azur region (SE France), through the observation of health condition of the trees, and more precisely defoliation and mortality. The main objective was to determine which factors were predominant in the multifactorial phenomenon of dieback on Scots pine, by trying to determine the share of climatic factors, taken from spatialized models, from those related to the characteristics of the plot and trees, measured in the field. Partial Least square regressions were used to study the relationship between defoliation and the explanatory factors, at the plot level. Biotic parameters (mistletoe mostly), then topoedaphic factors were the most influent, hiding the potential effect of any climatic factor. However, the importance of water balance from April to October stood out in the risk of mistletoe presence over a threshold determined as risky for Scots pine. The purpose of the study was to help foresters to make decisions, by proposing an index indicating whether a plot has a favourable situation or not, regarding Scots pine dieback risk, as well as creating a warning map of Scots pine dieback probability.; Des constats de dépérissements forestiers induits par des épisodes de sécheresse ont récemment été faits dans diverses forêts du monde, en particulier en limite d'aire de répartition des essences en régions sèches. C'est notamment le cas pour le Pin sylvestre en région méditerranéenne. Dans ce rapport, nous étudions les causes du dépérissement de cette essence en région Provence-Alpes Côte d'Azur, au travers de l'observation de l'état sanitaire des peuplements et plus particulièrement des pertes foliaires et de la mortalité. Le principal objectif fut de déterminer quels étaient les paramètres les plus influents dans le phénomène multifactoriel de dépérissement de l'espèce, en tentant de déterminer la part des facteurs climatiques, issus de données spatialisées, de ceux liés aux caractéristiques de la station et du peuplement, relevés sur le terrain. Des régressions PLS furent utilisées pour étudier le lien entre la défoliation et les différents facteurs, à l'échelle de la station. Les paramètres biotiques (le gui essentiellement), puis topoédaphiques se sont révélés être prépondérants, masquant l'influence potentielle des paramètres climatiques. L'importance du bilan hydrique d'avril à octobre a cependant été mis en évidence dans le risque de présence de gui à un seuil déterminé comme risqué pour le Pin sylvestre. La finalité de l'étude est d'orienter les gestionnaires forestiers dans leurs décisions à partir de la création d'un indice indiquant le caractère favorable ou non d'une station, au regard du risque de dépérissement du Pin sylvestre, ainsi que la création d'une carte de vigilance décrivant la probabilité de dépérissement de l'essence

In a region affected by forest diebacks, we gathered wood samples from every tree as well as tree health data and station description. Chronological series of growth rings are compared for different altitudes, expositions, topographies and amounts of dwarf mistletoe and pine processionary moth. Scots pine productivity can also be studied based on the age of the populations sampled. Having studied the pointer years, a model is built to highlight climate weight on scots pine annual growth. This allows to improve the understandings of scots pine productivity variations for the past decades and to open interesting prospects linked with climate change.; Ce présent mémoire présente une étude réalisée sur plus de 400 pins sylvestre échantillonnés sur 30 placettes sur des aires représentatives de l'espèce en Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA). Dans une région touchée par les dépérissements forestiers, des carottes ont été prélevées sur chaque arbre en parallèle de relevés d'état sanitaire et de description de station. On compare alors les séries chronologiques des cernes de croissance selon différentes altitudes, expositions, topographies ainsi qu'en fonction du gui et de la chenille processionnaire. Un regroupement par classe d'âge permet également d'étudier la productivité des nouveaux et des anciens peuplements. Après avoir étudié les années caractéristiques, la croissance de peuplements d'âges différents est modélisée en relation avec les données climatiques locales disponibles pour cette étude. Le modèle permet d'améliorer la compréhension du poids du climat sur la productivité récente du pin sylvestre et d'ouvrir des perspectives d'avenir intéressantes en lien avec le changement climatique.

The studied area is the Durance valley, from Briançon to Riez region, and, more generally, the southern French Alps. The time windowof our study is the medieval times, modern and contemporary periods, when a large amount of material (wood) is available.The first purpose of my work is to establish a better knowledge of the built heritage, using dendrochronology. We have been highlighting the types of wood used (species, age, size) as well as the trees felling and human construction phases. Given the human occupation and the land use changes, the development of this type of study is essential to preserve the historical track of this fragile heritage, witness of a mountain society in strong relationship with its environment, especially forestry. The second purpose is to develop knowledge of the relationship between buildings and forest. This relationship addresses the issue of the Alpine forests state and forest as a resource, during the last millennium. Human occupation history, in the southern French Alps, is questioned.To reach these goals, interdisciplinarity has been a necessity. Thus, a dialogue was established with historians, archaeologists, foresters, computer specialists, carpenters, anthracologists, managers, engineers and workers in construction and restoration. In order to overcome the limits of each discipline, dendrochronology has been used to implement an interdisciplinary approach.; L’étude des pièces de bois de construction permet de dater le bâti vernaculaire (fermes, granges, pressoirs à vin, moulin, pont…) et de préciser les variations temporelles des relations entre les sociétés humaines d’une part, et la ressource-bois et la forêt d’autre part. La zone d’étude est la vallée de la Durance, depuis le Briançonnais jusqu’à la région de Riez et, plus généralement, les Alpes françaises du sud. Le cadre temporel retenu comprend les époques médiévale, moderne et contemporaine, périodes pour lesquelles l’effectif du matériel étudiable est très élevé.Le premier objectif est une meilleure connaissance du patrimoine bâti, au moyen de la dendrochronologie. Les types de bois mis en œuvre (essence, âge, calibre) ainsi que les phases d’abattage et de construction sont mises en évidence. Dans un contexte de changement de l’occupation humaine et d’aménagement du territoire, le développement de ce type d’étude est essentiel pour conserver les traces historiques de ce patrimoine fragile, témoin d’une société montagnarde en relation forte avec son environnement, spécialement forestier. Le deuxième objectif est de développer la compréhension de la relation entre le bâti et la forêt. Cette relation entre les populations humaines et la forêt ressource pose la question de l’état des forêts des Alpes et de la forêt comme ressource au cours du dernier millénaire. L’histoire de l’occupation humaine dans les Alpes françaises du sud est ainsi questionnée.Pour répondre à la problématique, l’interdisciplinarité a été une nécessité. Un dialogue avec des historiens, archéologues, forestiers, informaticiens, charpentiers, anthracologues, gestionnaires, ingénieurs et ouvriers dans la construction et la restauration a été instauré. Et, la dendrochronologie a servi de creuset à la mise en œuvre d’une approche interdisciplinaire, dans le but de dépasser les limites de chaque discipline.

COST Action FP1106 STReESS ; EU Life Programme (LIFE12 ENV/FI/000409 ; Ajut Marie Curie IF fellowship (No 659191) Phloem osmolality and its components are involved in basic cell metabolism, cell growth, and in various physiological processes including the ability of living cells to withstand drought and frost. Osmolality and sugar composition responses to environmental stresses have been extensively studied for leaves, but less for the secondary phloem of plant stems and branches. Leaf osmotic concentration and the share of pinitol and raffinose among soluble sugars increase with increasing drought or cold stress, and osmotic concentration is adjusted with osmoregulation. We hypothesize that similar responses occur in the secondary phloem of branches. We collected living bark samples from branches of adult Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies, Betula pendula and Populus tremula trees across Europe, from boreal Northern Finland to Mediterranean Portugal. In all studied species, the observed variation in phloem osmolality was mainly driven by variation in phloem water content, while tissue solute content was rather constant across regions. Osmoregulation, in which osmolality is controlled by variable tissue solute content, was stronger for Betula and Populus in comparison to the evergreen conifers. Osmolality was lowest in mid-latitude region, and from there increased by 37% toward northern Europe and 38% toward southern Europe due to low phloem water content in these regions. The ratio of raffinose to all soluble sugars was negligible at mid-latitudes and increased toward north and south, reflecting its role in cold and drought tolerance. For pinitol, another sugar known for contributing to stress tolerance, no such latitudinal pattern was observed. The proportion of sucrose was remarkably low and that of hexoses (i.e., glucose and fructose) high at mid-latitudes. The ratio of starch to all non-structural carbohydrates increased toward the northern latitudes in agreement with the build-up of osmotically inactive C reservoir that can be converted into soluble sugars during winter acclimation in these cold regions. Present results for the secondary phloem of trees suggest that adjustment with tissue water content plays an important role in osmolality dynamics. Furthermore, trees acclimated to dry and cold climate showed high phloem osmolality and raffinose proportion.

Gene flow from plantations of nonlocal (genetically exotic) tree provenances into natural stands of the same species is probably a widespread phenomenon, but its effects remain largely unexamined. We investigated early fitness consequences of intraspecific exotic gene flow in the wild by assessing differences in survival among native, nonlocal, and F1 intraspecific hybrid seedlings naturally established within two native pine relicts (one of Pinus pinaster and the other of P. sylvestris) surrounded by nonlocal plantations. We obtained broad-scale temporally sequential genotypic samples of a cohort of recruits in each pine relict, from seeds before dispersal to established seedlings months after emergence, tracking temporal changes in the estimated proportion of each parental cross-type. Results show significant proportions of exotic male gametes before seed dispersal in the two pine relicts. Subsequently to seedling establishment, the frequency of exotic male gametes became nonsignificant in P. pinaster, and dropped by half in P. sylvestris. Exotic zygotic gene flow was significantly different from zero among early recruits for P. sylvestris, decreasing throughout seedling establishment. Seedling mortality resulted in small late sample sizes, and temporal differences in exotic gene flow estimates were not significant, so we could not reject the null hypothesis of invariant early viability across parental cross types in the wild. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

The mixing of tree species with complementary ecological traits may modify forest functioning regarding productivity, stability, or resilience against disturbances. This may be achieved by a higher heterogeneity in stand structure which is often addressed but rarely quantified. Here, we use 32 triplets of mature and fully stocked monocultures and mixed stands of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) located along a productivity and water availability gradient through Europe to examine how mixing modifies the stand structure in terms of stand density, horizontal tree distribution pattern, vertical stand structure, size distribution pattern, and variation in tree morphology. We further analyze how site conditions modify these aspects of stand structure. For this typical mixture of a light demanding and shade tolerant species we show that (i) mixing significantly increases many aspects of structural heterogeneity compared with monocultures, (ii) mixing effects such as an increase of stand density and diversification of vertical structure and tree morphology are caused by species identity (additive effects) but also by species interactions (multiplicative effects), and (iii) superior heterogeneity of mixed stands over monocultures can increase from dry to moist sites. We discuss the implications for analyzing the productivity, for modelling and for the management of mixed species stands. National audience; Sur plusieurs sites naturels ayant un intérêt patrimonial, la colonisation par des ligneux est observée et pose des questions sur l’évolution des communautés végétales en place. Mieux prévoir ces évolutions et prendre les décisions appropriées implique de mieux connaître les raisons de ces évolutions, et notamment les capacités de colonisation des ligneux. Le site d’étude est une carrière de pouzzolane abandonnée depuis 1980 situé au pied du Puy de la Vache, dans la chaîne des Puys. Dans cette carrière, comme au sommet du Puy, c’est une végétation pionnière herbacée des substrats meubles (scories) qui est installée. On observe aussi une colonisation par le Pin sylvestre (Pinus sylvestris L.), et dans une moindre mesure, par l’épicea (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst) et le bouleau (Betula pendula Roth), de faciès secs et très filtrants, car en pente forte et sur scories. Nous avons analysé les particularités morphologiques et physiologiques des Pins sylvestres colonisant ces faciès, en les comparant à des individus installés à proximité sur des faciès ayant une réserve en eau. Les paramètres physiologiques suivis portent sur l’état hydrique de l’arbre, les échanges gazeux et le fonctionnement hydraulique. Pour ce dernier, nous avons mesuré la résistance à la cavitation qui est un paramètre de tolérance à la sécheresse.

Nonlinear mixed-effects-models are applied successfully to estimate the cambial age of juvenile-mature wood transition in Scots pine sample trees from slow-grown stands. Till now segmented regression models are applied separately for each pith-to-bark-profile of wood density. The nonlinear mixed-effects-model overcomes this limitation while consistently and efficiently estimating the transition point for the whole sample. Furthermore standard errors can be calculated and impacts of stand and tree variables on the shape of pith-to-bark-curves can be tested. Mean ring density, earlywood, and latewood density profiles from 99 trees were determined by X-ray densitometric analysis of disks taken at 4-m stem height. The cambial age of transition from juvenile to mature wood is described according to nonlinear mixed-effects-models based on latewood density profiles. The time-series nature of the data are taken into account. The segmented quadratic-linear model shows the transition at cambial age of 21.77, which vary with the probability of 0.95 within the interval of [18.31; 26.85]. Impacts of tree variables or stands on the location of the transition point were not found, but impacts of stands on the shape of pith-to-bark-curves., Des modèles mixtes non linéaires ont été utilisés avec succès afin d'estimer l'âge (compté depuis la moelle) du passage bois juvénile-bois adulte pour des pins sylvestres provenant de peuplements à croissance lente. Jusqu'à présent, des modèles de régression segmentés étaient ajustés individuellement à chaque profil de densité du bois de la moelle à l'écorce. Le modèle mixte non linéaire permet de dépasser cette limitation en estimant de manière efficace et cohérente l'âge du point de passage pour l'ensemble de la population échantillonnée. En outre, des variances peuvent être estimées et les impacts des peuplements et des caractéristiques des arbres sur la forme des profils de densité du bois de la moelle à l'écorce peuvent être testés. À cette fin, les profils de densité moyenne de cerne, de densité du bois initial et de densité du bois final de 99 arbres ont été mesurés par exploration microdensitométrique de clichés radiographiques obtenus à partir d'échantillons prélevés dans des disques découpés à 4 mètres de hauteur. L'âge compté depuis la moelle du passage bois juvénile-bois adulte a été identifié à partir de modèles mixtes non linéaires appliqués aux profils de densité du bois final. La nature longitudinale des données a été prise en compte. Le modèle segmenté linéaire quadratique retenu permet d'identifier un âge moyen de passage du bois juvénile au bois adulte de 21,77 ans assorti d'un intervalle de confiance à 5 % de 18,31 à 26,85 ans. Si les impacts des variables "caractéristiques des arbres" et "peuplement" sur l'âge de passage bois juvénile-bois adulte n'ont pas été identifiés comme significatifs, le peuplement est apparu avoir un effet sur la forme des courbes d'évolution de la moelle à l'écorce du caractère considéré.

International audience; In this study, growth models of individual tree diameter for uneven-aged mixtures of P. sylvestris and P. nigra in Catalonia were developed using a past growth index as site descriptor. These models were compared to an earlier model, based on the same data, that did not use past growth as a predictor. The growth index was calculated as a ratio of the measured and predicted past growth of sample trees within a given stand, the predictors pertaining to an average site. The models for future growth were based on 7 982 and 5 673 observations, and the models for past growth on 1 997 and 1 686 observations for P. sylvestris and P. nigra, respectively. Due to the applied Snowdon correction, the biases for the diameter growth models were zero. The relative RMSE values were 56.3% for the earlier P. sylvestris model and 52.0% for the new model, and 48.7% for the earlier P. nigra model and 47.1% for the new model. The accuracy of stand-level predictions (10-year change in basal area of living pines in the inventory plots) was better for the new models (Bias % = 2.79 and RMSE % = 34.79) than for the earlier ones (Bias % = 3.27 and RMSE % = 41.54). The results indicate that the new models adapt to specific stand conditions better than models that omit past growth measurements.; Utilisation de la croissance passée pour l'évaluation du site dans des modèles non spatialisés de croissance en diamètre pour des peuplements irréguliers et mélangés de Pinus sylvestris L. et Pinus nigra Arn. en Catalogne (Nord-Est de l'Espagne). Dans cette étude, des modèles de croissance en diamètre pour des peuplements irréguliers et mélangés de Pinus sylvestris L. et Pinus nigra Arn. en Catalogne ont été développés en utilisant un indice de croissance passée comme prédicteur du site. Ces modèles étaient comparés avec un modèle antérieur, à partir des mêmes valeurs, qui n'utilisait pas la croissance passée comme prédicteur. L'indice de croissance a été calculé comme un rapport de la croissance passée mesurée et la croissance passée prédite des arbres échantillonnées dans une placette donnée, avec des prédicteurs concernant un site moyen. Les modèles pour la croissance future correspondent à 7 982 et 5 673 observations, et les modèles pour la croissance passée à 1 997 et 1 686 observations pour P. sylvestris et P. nigra, respectivement. Les biais pour les modèles de croissance en diamètre sont zéro en raison de l'application de la correction de Snowdon. Les valeurs relatives du RMSE étaient 56.3 % pour le modèle antérieur de P. sylvestris et 52.0 % pour le nouveau modèle, et 48.7 % pour le modèle antérieur de P. nigra et 47.1 % pour le nouveau modèle. La précision des prédictions au niveau des placettes (dérive en surface terrière pour 10-années des arbres vivants dans les placettes d'inventaire) était meilleure pour les nouveaux modèles (Biais % = 2.79 et RMSE % = 34.79) que pour les modèles antérieures (Biais % = 3.27 et RMSE % = 41.54). Les résultats indiquent que les nouveaux modèles s'adaptent mieux aux conditions spécifiques de peuplement que les modèles omettant les mesures de croissance passée.

The objective of this work is to compare anatomical measurements to wood density variations within annual rings of three major softwood species, Norway spruce, Scots Pine and Silver Fir. The six selected annual rings were sampled within a database of thousand microdensitometric profiles measured on wood samples collected in Finland and France. Each of the six studied annual rings represents one average profile of wood density for a given age class and age ring width. The dimensions of the tracheids are performed in the radial-tangential plane by using two different planimetric methods. The wood density profile within each ring is calculated simply by the mean of the tracheid dimensions and by using a constant value for the cell wall density. We have verified that the knowledge of the (i) tracheid geometry and (ii) the usually admitted value of the cell wall density allows us to calculate intra ring wood density profiles which are similar to the X-rays wood density profiles in terms of variations but very different in average. Thus it appears necessary to calibrate by using an apparent cell wall density varying inside the rings and being far weaker than the effective cell wall density of 1460 kg/m³ as it is usually admitted in the literature, L’objectif de ce travail est comparer des mesures anatomiques à des mesures de variations de densité du bois à l’intérieur de cernes annuels pour trois essences résineuses importantes, l’épicéa commun, le sapin pectiné et le pin sylvestre. Les cernes sélectionnés sont choisis dans un échantillon de plusieurs milliers de cernes prélevés dans des arbres en France et en Finlande. Chaque cerne étudié représente pour une essence le profil moyen de densité d’une classe d’âge compté depuis la moelle et d’une classe de largeur de cerne. Les caractéristiques géométriques des trachéides sont mesurées par deux méthodes planimétriques différentes dans le plan radial-tangentiel. Le profil de densité du bois est calculé simplement à partir des dimensions des trachéides et de la densité de la matière ligneuse. Pour que le profil calculé de densité du bois corresponde au profil obtenu par microdensitométrie nous avons montré qu’il est nécessaire faire varier le facteur de calibration, appelé densité apparente de la paroi cellulaire, à l’intérieur des cernes avec des valeurs bien plus faibles que 1460 kg/m³, la valeur habituellement utilisée dans la littérature

Understanding physiological processes involved in drought‐induced mortality is important for predicting the future of forests and for modelling the carbon and water cycles. Recent research has highlighted the variable risks of carbon starvation and hydraulic failure in drought‐exposed trees. However, little is known about the specific responses of leaves and supporting twigs, despite their critical role in balancing carbon acquisition and water loss. Comparing healthy (non‐defoliated) and unhealthy (defoliated) Scots pine at the same site, we measured the physiological variables involved in regulating carbon and water resources. Defoliated trees showed different responses to summer drought compared with non‐defoliated trees. Defoliated trees maintained gas exchange while non‐defoliated trees reduced photosynthesis and transpiration during the drought period. At the branch scale, very few differences were observed in non‐structural carbohydrate concentrations between health classes. However, defoliated trees tended to have lower water potentials and smaller hydraulic safety margins. While non‐defoliated trees showed a typical response to drought for an isohydric species, the physiology appears to be driven in defoliated trees by the need to maintain carbon resources in twigs. These responses put defoliated trees at higher risk of branch hydraulic failure and help explain the interaction between carbon starvation and hydraulic failure in dying trees., Understanding the physiological responses of leaves to drought is crucial since they are the site of both photosynthesis and transpiration, and hence play key roles in balancing the risks of carbon starvation and hydraulic failure. Co‐occurring healthy and unhealthy Scots pines showed different responses to summer drought: while healthy trees showed a typical response to drought for an isohydric species, atypical physiology in unhealthy trees appears to be driven by the need to maintain carbohydrate availability in needles and twigs. These responses put unhealthy trees at higher risk of branch hydraulic failure and help to explain the interaction between carbon‐starvation and hydraulic failure in dying trees.

Extractives are present in much larger amounts in knotwood than in heartwood in the 12 tested hardwood and softwood species. The chemical identity of the extractives varies largely among species, lignans being only present in softwood species. Extractives from knotwood may constitute an important source of new chemicals and remain still poorly known. The content of extractives (and particularly lignans) in knots was compared to that of heartwood in a number of different European softwood and hardwood species. Twelve species characteristic of European forests were sampled. Extractions were carried out with four solvents of increasing polarity (dichloromethane, acetone, toluene/ethanol and water). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for the identification of the compounds present in acetone extracts which are expected to contain lignans. In all tested species, knotwood presented larger contents of extractives than heartwood. The main compounds were lignans, stilbenes and flavonoids, lignans being present only in softwood species. With the exception of oak, knotwood in softwood species contain larger amounts of extractives than that in hardwood species. The chemical nature of extractives present in knotwood varies with species. Their amount is generally much higher in softwood than heartwood species.

Irstea a été chargé par le MAAF d’assurer la révision des fiches de conseils d’utilisation des Matériels Forestiers de Reproduction (MFR) dans la perspective du changement climatique, conformément aux engagements du Plan national d’adaptation des forêts aux effets du changement climatique. Irstea a rédigé le cahier des charges et les fiches martyres destinés aux différents groupes de travail qui devaient chacun produire le consensus scientifique propre à chaque cas d’espèce. Lors de la réunion du 9 octobre 2014 du CTPS, Irstea a rendu compte de l’avancement du projet. Lors de celle du 25 mars 2015, il a exposé les difficultés rencontrées pour la constitution des groupes, notamment en raison de la réticence des modélisateurs à énoncer des préconisations pratiques en l’absence de certitudes scientifiques. Conformément aux recommandations du CTPS, Irstea a ensuite travaillé directement avec les généticiens spécialistes des espèces concernées et abouti, avant la réunion du CTPS du 24 septembre 2015, à la révision complète des sept fiches reconnues prioritaires par le CTPS : pin maritime, douglas, chêne sessile, mélèze d’Europe, pin sylvestre, pin à l’encens et épicéa de Sitka. La collaboration avec les généticiens concernés, ainsi qu’avec les spécialistes du Département Santé des Forêts et un spécialiste de l’autécologie des espèces a été très efficace et le travail rendu a recueilli la satisfaction des membres du CTPS.

En soumettant de jeunes plants de pin sylvestre à des doses progressives de froid au cours de la phase de repos, nous avons mis en évidence la réalité du besoin de froid, le quantifier et visualiser les conséquences d’une exposition insuffisante sur le développement des bourgeons. Une estimation des besoins de chaleur a aussi été réalisée. Une approche de modélisation du débourrement a ensuite été entreprise. Un effet éclairement existe qui n’est pas un effet photopériode.

The aim of the present work was to provide a synopsis of the scientific literature concerning the effects of different tree spe- cies on soil and to quantify the effect of common European temperate forest species on soil fertility. The scientific literature dealing with the tree species effect on soil has been reviewed. The composition of forest overstory has an impact on the chemical, physical and biolo- gical characteristics of soil. This impact was highest in the topsoil. Different tree species had significantly different effects on water ba- lance and microclimate. The physical characteristics of soils also were modified depending on the overstory species, probably through modifications of the soil fauna. The rates of organic matter mineralization and nitrification seem to be dependent on tree species. A coni- ferous species, Picea abies, had negative input-output budgets for some nutrients, such as Ca and Mg. This species promoted a higher soil acidification and a decrease in pH. Thus, it should not be planted in very poor soils in areas affected by acidic atmospheric deposi- tions. Nevertheless, the effect of the canopy species on soil fertility was rarely significant enough to promote forest decline. Considering the key role of Monochamus galloprovincialis (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in the dispersion of the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Bührer) Nickle (Nematoda: Aphelenchoidea), in Europe, defining the host spectrum and preference of M. galloprovincialis is of primary importance for forest management. Therefore, comparative studies under laboratory conditions were performed in order to define the feeding and oviposition preferences of M. galloprovincialis adults as well as the larval development on Pinus sylvestris and Pinus pinaster. Both nutrition and oviposition were significantly higher on P. sylvestris. However, no difference was found when comparing larval survival on the two Pinus species even though larvae attended the fourth instar earlier when reared on P. sylvestris than on P. pinaster. The results of this study reinforce the suspicions of a future rapid propagation of the nematode, by M. galloprovincialis, into the Pine forests all over Europe., Θεωρώντας τον ρόλο του Monochamus galloprovincialis κλειδί στην εξάπλωση του νηματώδη του πεύκου στην Ευρώπη, η διαλεύκανση του εύρους των ξενιστών και των προτιμήσεων του Μ. galloprovincialis σε αυτούς είναι πρωτεύουσας σημασίας για την προστασία του δάσους.Συγκριτικές μελέτες σε συνθήκες εργαστηρίου διεξήχθησαν με σκοπό την διευκρίνηση των διατροφικών και ωοθετικών προτιμήσεων των ενηλίκων αυτού του εντόμου καθώς και της ανάπτυξης των προνυμφών του στα P. sylvestris και P. pinaster. Η διατροφή και η ωοτοκία βρέθηκαν στατιστικά πιο σημαντικές στο P. sylvestris αλλά καμία διαφορά δεν βρέθηκε στην επιβίωση των προνυμφών στα δύο είδη πεύκου. Οι προνύμφες έφτασαν στην 4η ηλικία νωρίτερα στο P. sylvestris από ότι στο P. pinaster. Τα αποτελέσματα της παρούσης μελέτης ισχυροποιούν τις υποψίες για μια γρήγορη μελλοντική εξάπλωση του νηματώδη σε ολόκληρη την Ευρώπη.

Poland continues to be afforested its poorest agricultural land, even if the soil conditions are deemed worse than those of forest plantations. Thus, does the previous land-use (i.e. agriculture versus forest) modifies xylogenesis and sensitivity to climate? Investigations were conducted in Polish lowland, on 40 Scots pines from 65 to 101 years old. Ring-width series of double radii were created based on measurement of annual rings using WinDENDRO. Dendrochronology technics (i.e. crossdating and double standardization) allowed obtain a master chronology, which was confronted with climate data through correlation functions and an analysis of pointer years. These results showed that a mild winter and additionally a cool and wet autumn were the main factor for a large Scots pine ring. Comparative analysis highlighted that pines from former farmland (i) grown more slowly (-16%) than pines grown under forest typical conditions and (ii) showed increased sensitivity to climatic factors, both in normal years and in extreme conditions. A contrario, pines from former farmland from 5 to 35 years-old, experienced a higher latewood proportion, for a core of juvenile wood of only 6 cm on average.; La Pologne continue de boiser ses terres agricoles les plus pauvres ; même si les conditions pédologiques y sont réputées plus défavorables que celles des reboisements forestiers. L’étude porta sur 40 pins sylvestres de la plaine polonaise, âgés de 65 à 101 ans. La mesure à l’aide de WinDENDRO des largeurs de cerne permit la construction d’une série de croissance par arbre. Les techniques de dendrochronologie (i.e. interdatation et double standardisation) permirent d’obtenir une chronologie maîtresse qui fut confrontée aux données climatiques par le biais de fonctions de corrélation et d’une analyse des pointer years. Ces résultats montrèrent qu’un automne frais et humide et surtout des températures hivernales douces constituaient le principal facteur d'un cerne large pour le pin sylvestre de Mazovie. L’analyse comparée mit en évidence qu’un pin de sol agricole poussait moins vite qu’un pin forestier (-16 %), et présentait une sensibilité accrue aux facteurs climatiques, tant en années normales que lors de conditions extrêmes. A contrario, il bénéficiait, entre l'âge de 5 et 35 ans, d'une proportion de bois final plus importante, pour un noyau central de bois juvénile de seulement 6 cm en moyenne.

Forest ecosystems’ resistance and resilience during drought events are questioned as drought events increase in frequency. Our study aimed to assess whether mixing species and intra-specific stratification alter individuals’ resilience to drought. The study of ring widths allowed the definition of resilience indexes to six drought events between 1970 and 2013. The sample consisted of 108 individuals of sessile oak Quercus petraea (Matt.) and Scots pine Pinus sylvestris L. in pure and mixed stands from three size classes (three social status: dominant, co-dominant and dominated) sampled in 2012 and 2013 in the Orleans forest, France . Our results show that the two species respond differently to different types of drought in connection with physiological differences. We demonstrate that the species mixture has no effect on resilience or resistance. The differing responses of individuals from different social status appear to be related to age effects in oak. Dominated pines display a higher resilience than pines of higher status. These composition and status factors as well as soil and climatic conditions for each drought events need to be taken into account to achieve a better understanding of the diversity of response to climatic variations among forest ecosystems.; Les capacités de résistance et résilience des écosystèmes forestiers lors des évènements de sécheresse sont remises en question alors que les périodes de sécheresse augmentent en fréquence. Notre étude visait à estimer si le mélange d’essences et la hiérarchisation intra-spécifique modifiaient la résistance et la résilience des individus aux sécheresses. L’étude des largeurs de cernes nous a permis de définir des indices de résistance et résilience pour six années de sécheresses sur la période 1970-2013. L’échantillon était constitué de 108 individus de trois classes de taille (trois statuts sociaux : dominant, co-dominant et dominé) de chêne sessile Quercus petraea (Matt.) et de pin sylvestre Pinus sylvestris L. en peuplements purs et mélangés échantillonnés en 2012 et 2013 en forêt d’Orléans. Nos résultats montrent que les deux essences répondent de manière différente aux différents types de sécheresses étudiées en lien avec des différences physiologiques. Notre étude ne montre pas d’effet du mélange d’essences sur la résistance et résilience des individus. En revanche le statut social a un effet sur ces indices. Chez le chêne, les variations de réponse des individus selon leur statut social semblent liées à des effets d’âge. Les pins de statut dominé ont une meilleure résilience que les pins de statut supérieur. Ces facteurs composition et statut ainsi que les conditions pédoclimatiques de chaque sécheresse sont à prendre en compte afin de mieux comprendre la diversité de réponse aux aléas climatiques des écosystèmes forestiers.

Throughout the world, huge areas have been occupied by monospecific tree plantations in order to fulfil the increasing demand for industrial wood products. The use of mixed-species plantations has recently been advocated as a potential compromise between maintaining high-volume wood production and conserving other ecosystem services. Yet little is known about the impact of tree species mixture on species- and ecosystem-level carbon accumulation and water use in mixed plantations. We combined data on above-ground biomass, xylem sap flux density, and the carbon and oxygen isotope composition of leaves and needles in a boreal plantation to test whether different levels of species mixture would impact tree- and plot-level biomass production, transpiration and water use efficiency. Data were recorded in 22 20-x-20-m plots (7 for transpiration) randomly allocated to either monocultures or to two-, three-, and five-species mixtures of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), Norway spruce (Picea abies), Silver birch (Betula pendula), Common alder (Alms glutinosa) and Siberian larch (Larix sibirica). At tree level, for a given species, we found significant differences among mixtures in transpiration and water use efficiency, though species mixture had no impact on above-ground biomass. At plot level, a large variability in functioning among mixtures was observed, but increasing the number of species in the mixture did not enhance productivity, transpiration or water use efficiency. The presence in mixtures of a high performing species like birch brought about changes in the canopy structure which in turn may have led to changes in micro-environmental conditions. Such changes could have contributed to explain differences in transpiration and water use efficiency among mixtures. We concluded that mixing locally-adapted species under non-limiting soil water conditions did not provide any benefit for ecosystem-level carbon accumulation and water use at this young ontogenic stage, but our study does not preclude that some benefits might arise at older stages. Une technique pour l'identification des espèces d'arbres à l'aide de la tomodensitométrie est suggérée, ce qui permet d'étudier les caractéristiques internes et les caractéristiques de la structure anatomique de diverses races. Sur la base de ces caractéristiques, une base de données de variables a été obtenue, qui a été traitée en utilisant des méthodes mathématiques-statistiques, telles que: les boîtes à moustaches, la méthode des composantes principales, l'arbre de décision. L'analyse a montré que cet algorithme permet l'identification des roches avec une grande précision., In the work a method of wood species identification by using computed tomography was proposed. Computed tomography allow us to explore internal characteristics of wood and specific anatomical features of different species. Data base of variables was obtained, that was analysed by mathematic-statistical methods such as box plots, PCA, Classification tree. The analyze revealed, that the method allow us to identify different species of wood with good accuracy.

Under temperate latitudes, low temperature is usually a key factor constraining the distribution of insects species through minimal thresholds required for survival and development. Thus, range shift is one of the striking effects of global warming observed in a number of cold- sensitive species. However, the consequences of such range shifts on inter-specific interactions are largely unexplored. The winterdeveloping pine processionary moth originated from the Mediterranean Basin but expanded considerably its range distribution towards higher latitudes and altitudes over the last two decades. This range expansion is clearly associated with better winter survival and enhanced feeding activity related to climate warming. Two research topics were developed in our study : (1) the response of natural enemies to an expanding host ; (2) the impact of the colonisation of new areas on an endangered moth species exploiting the same host tree, the Spanish moon moth. Our results show that in newly- colonized areas, pine processionary moth is released from its egg-parasitoids. Thus, near the expansion front, a female pine processionary moth will have more offspring than in the core of its distribution range. Moreover, previous tree defoliation by the pine processionary moth has a negative effect on the development of Spanish moon moth larvae. Our results contribute to understand the causes of the expansion of this forest pest and its consequences on species previously inhabiting the newly- colonized areas., Sous les latitudes tempérées, les aires de distribution respectives des espèces d’insectes sont généralement conditionnées par les températures hivernales au travers de seuils minimaux de tolérance pour la survie et le développement. Ainsi, le déplacement des aires de répartition est un des effets les plus notables du réchauffement climatique sur les espèces sensibles au froid. Cependant, les conséquences de la colonisation de nouveaux milieux par les espèces en expansion, notamment sur les interactions interspécifiques restent largement inexplorées. La processionnaire du pin est un ravageur d’origine méditerranéenne, dont l’aire de répartition s’est considérablement étendue vers le nord et en altitude ces deux dernières décennies. Cette expansion est liée à la hausse des températures hivernales qui permet une meilleure survie des colonies se développant durant cette période. Notre étude s’est développée autour de deux axes de recherches : (1) la réponse des ennemis naturels à l’expansion de leur hôte ; (2) l’impact de la colonisation sur une espèce protégée inféodée à la même ressource alimentaire, l’Isabelle de France. Nos résultats ont montré que dans les zones nouvellement colonisées, la processionnaire du pin est libérée de la pression de ses parasitoïdes oophages. Ainsi, au niveau du front d’expansion, une femelle de processionnaire du pin produira plus de descendants que dans le coeur de son aire de répartition. De plus, la défoliation par la processionnaire du pin a un effet négatif sur le développement des chenilles d’Isabelle de France. Nos résultats contribuent à comprendre les causes de l’expansion de ce ravageur forestier et ses conséquences sur les espèces autochtones des zones nouvellement colonisées.

Mélanger des espèces d'arbre au sein d'un peuplement forestier est une stratégie qui peut présenter plusieurs avantages du point de vue de la production de bois. Elle peut avoir un effet positif sur la productivité et permettrait de limiter les conséquences liées à la fragilisation ou à la disparition d'une espèce devenue inadaptée à une nouvelle situation climatique. Néanmoins, le lien entre mélange et productivité est complexe et dépend d'un ensemble de facteurs qui varient dans l'espace et le temps. L'utilisation des données de l'Inventaire forestier national et les expérimentations à long terme sont deux approches complémentaires pour améliorer les connaissances sur le fonctionnement des écosystèmes forestiers mélangés et être en mesure de proposer des modes de gestion adaptés aux différents types d'assemblage d'espèces. / Mixing tree species is a strategy that may have several advantages in terms of wood productivity. This strategy may have a positive effect on productivity and could limit the consequences of the weakening or disappearance of a species because of climate change. Nevertheless, the link between productivity and mixture is a hard topic and depends on a combination of factors that vary in space and time. Using data from the National Forest Inventory and long-term experiments are two complementary approaches to improve our knowledge on the functioning of mixed forests and to be able to define management strategies adapted to the different kinds of species assemblages and for different climatic conditions.

Les résultats de la recherche concernant le rôle de protection des formations végétales sont également intégrés. Le guide propose d'abord une démarche de diagnostic du rôle de protection physique et des contraintes d'exploitation, ainsi qu'une clef de décision permettant d'établir des priorités d'intervention. Ensuite sont définis, pour chaque type de situation et de peuplement, des scénarios de gestion et des règles d'intervention. En contexte tempéré, les études sur l'instabilité spatio-temporelle de la sensibilité des essences forestières au climat sont rares et souvent conduites à des échelles locales et régionales ; de telles approches ne permettant pas d'obtenir une vision globale de la réponse à l'environnement et à ses variations. La fusion de jeux de données dendrochronologiques (plus de 4500 arbres carottés) a permis d'analyser le comportement de croissance de sept essences européennes tempérées majeures (Quercus petraea, Fagus sylvatica, Abies alba, Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, Pinus nigra, Pinus uncinata) dans des contextes climatiques variés (océanique à subalpin) et sur l'ensemble du 20ème siècle. Ce travail a également permis de préciser dans quelles mesures les conditions écologiques locales modulaient cette sensibilité au climat. Les relations cerne-climat ont été évaluées par le calcul de fonctions de corrélation. Quelque soit l'essence et le contexte écologique, la sécheresse estivale est le principal facteur limitant la croissance radiale (mais non l'unique), suivie par la sécheresse de l'automne précédent et enfin le froid hivernal. La variabilité spatiale de la réponse dépend plus fortement de la pluviométrie que des températures, une pluviométrie faible conduisant à une sensibilité plus forte au froid hivernal et aux sécheresses estivale et automnale. Ce comportement général est modulé par les conditions écologiques locales, avec une sensibilité à la sécheresse moindre sur sol profond. Les différences interspécifiques s'expriment principalement hors saison de végétation (novembre à mars), même si les corrélations sont rarement significatives. La croissance des résineux est généralement stimulée par des fins d'hiver chauds (février à avril), alors que celle des feuillus est corrélée négativement aux températures et positivement aux précipitations en décembre et janvier. Ces différences entre essences s'avèrent plutôt stables le long des gradients climatiques. Enfin, l'analyse temporelle révèle de fortes instabilités des relations cerne-climat au cours du siècle dernier. Le sens et l'ampleur de ces variations sont homogènes le long des gradients écologiques, mais en revanche peu synchrones avec les instabilités climatiques (automne, hiver, printemps) ou écophysiologiquement peu logiques (été). Cette faible cohérence entre tendances climatiques et instabilité de la sensibilité au climat pourrait s'expliquer par l'absence d'une contrainte climatique de croissance unique en contexte tempéré, où la largeur de cerne est sous le double contrôle du froid hivernal et du stress hydrique estival (et automnal). Elle pourrait également provenir de phénomènes non climatiques, tels que l'effet biologique lié au vieillissement ou l'évolution progressive des pratiques de gestion forestière. Les analyses des variations spatio-temporelles de sensibilité au climat questionnent également sur la précision des relations cerne-climat, estimée le plus souvent au travers du calcul des fonctions de corrélation. En effet, les comparaisons inter-région, inter-site et inter-période des réponses révèlent souvent des variations de corrélations dont les grandeurs pourraient être de l'ordre de la précision liée à l'échantillon considéré. Nous proposons ici de quantifier l'effet de la taille (nombre d'arbres carottés) et des caractéristiques de l'échantillon (nombre de placettes, nombre d'arbres par placette, statuts sociaux couverts) sur la qualité de l'estimation du signal environnemental contenu dans la chronologie moyenne et des fonctions de corrélation. [...] Suite et fin du résumé dans la thèse., In temperate conditions, studies dealing with spatio-temporal instabilities in climate sensitivity of forest tree species are scarce and often led at local and regional scales, which prevents from drawing global responses to the environment and its variations. The dendrochronological dataset merging (more than 4500 cored trees) allowed analyzing the growth pattern of seven major European species (Quercus petraea, Fagus sylvatica, Abies alba, Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, Pinus nigra, Pinus uncinata) in various climatic contexts (oceanic to subalpine) and over the 20thcentury. This thesis also investigated the modulation of climate sensitivity by local ecological conditions. Climate-growth relationships were studied through the calculation of correlation functions. Regardless of the species and the ecological context, summer drought is the main growth limiting factor (but not the unique one), followed by previous autumn drought and winter frost. Spatial variability in response to climate depends more heavily on pluviometry than temperature, decreasing the amount of precipitation leading to increasing sensitivities to summer and previous autumn droughts and also winter frost. This general pattern is modulated the local ecological conditions, with especially a lower sensitivity to drought on deep soils. Species-specific responses to climate are mainly evidenced out of the growing season (November to March), even if correlations are rarely significant. The growth of conifers is generally enhanced by warm late winters (February to April), while that of broadleaves is negatively correlated to temperature and positively to precipitation in December and January. These between-species differences turn out to be stable along the climatic gradients. Lastly, the temporal analysis evidences strong climate-growth relationships instabilities over the last century. The way and the magnitude of these variations are rather homogenous along the climatic gradients, but display low synchronicity with climatic instabilities (autumn, winter and spring) and are ecophysiologically difficult to explain (summer). Such incoherencies between climatic trends and climate sensitivity trends could be related to the absence of a single growth limiting factor under temperate context, since tree-ring is under the control of both winter frost and summer (and autumn) drought. They could also result from non-climatic phenomenons, such as the biological the age-related biological effect or progressive changes in forest management. The analyses of spatio-temporal variations in sensitivity climate question on the precision of the climate-growth relationships, most of the time estimated with correlation functions. Indeed, inter-plot, inter-region and inter-period comparisons of responses often highlight differences in correlations which could be of the same magnitude than that of the precision related to the investigated sample. We thus propose to quantify the effect of the sample size (number of cored trees) and characteristics (number of plots, number of trees per plot, sampled social statuses) on the accuracy of the estimation of both the environmental signal estimation contained in the growth chronology and the correlation functions. This analysis also investigated the modulation of such effects by the species-specific functional traits and the strength of the environmental growth limitation. Sample size and characteristics affect the chronology signal and thus the climate-growth relationships estimation. Decreasing the number of cored trees implies an increasing noise when assessing the environmental signal common to all trees, leading to an increasing error of the bootstrapped coefficients of correlation (BCC) estimation. This error is composed of a bias equivalent to the square-root of the expressed population signal which leads to an under-estimation of the correlations strength, and a low precision of the BCC estimations. An increase of this error induces greater risks of estimating non-significant correlations which are significant at the population scale. Increasing the number of plots was found to be of a greater interest than increasing the number of trees per plot. Lastly, strong differences were evidenced among species and ecological contexts. Climate-growth relationships estimation of shade-tolerant species (Fagus sylvatica, Abies alba, Picea abies) is more sensitive to sample characteristics than that of heliophilous species (Quercus petraea, Pinus sylvestris, Pinus nigra). Thus, for a given error, the number of cored trees has to be 40 to 60% higher for the shade-tolerant species compared to the heliophilous species. These interspecies differences are attributable to a greater inter-tree variability in growth pattern for shade-tolerant species, especially betweensocial statuses, an increasing dominancy leading to an increasing sensitivity to climate. In the same way, the sample size required to reach an acceptable level of error decreases with increasing environmental limitation (i.e. under warm and dry conditions, at high elevation and on superficial soils). We finally propose a new method to improve the climate-growth relationships estimation, based on the calculation of multiple correlation functions on subsamples resulting from random extractions with replacement of trees. This method allows correcting the sample-size-related bias, estimating the precision of the estimations and reducing the risk of estimating non-significant correlations which are significant at the population scale.

Cette étude vise à mieux décrire la croissance des forêts mélangées composées de chêne sessile et de pin sylvestre. La base de données utilisée est celle de l'Inventaire forestier national, ce qui permet de traiter une large zone géographique et donc de prendre en compte les gradients altitudinaux, édaphiques et climatiques. Les données ont permis d'établir deux modèles : l'un pour le chêne pur et l'autre pour le chêne en mélange. Le premier modèle en peuplement pur a permis d'établir que six variables affectaient la croissance du chêne. Ces variables sont la roche mère, les températures, la réserve utile en eau et le rapport carbone sur azote. Le deuxième modèle a mis en évidence que la productivité du chêne est plus importante lorsqu'il est mélangé avec du pin. Cet effet du mélange s'avère donc être un avantage productif qui est modifié par le taux de chêne dans le peuplement et par la qualité de la station indiquée par les six variables agissant sur la croissance du chêne. L'effet du mélange sur la productivité est d'autant plus fort que le taux de chêne est faible et que la valeur du potentiel de croissance est faible (station pauvre, défavorable). L'effet du mélange sur la productivité du chêne est assez fort comparé à d'autres résultats de la bibliographie. La démarche utilisée est adaptable à d'autres mélanges à deux espèces, et peut donc permettre de mieux connaitre le fonctionnement des forêts mélangées.

To determine how changes in land use, climate and shrub cover affect the invasion dynamics of native (Pinus sylvestris L.) and introduced (Pinus nigra Arn. subsp. nigra) pines in grasslands. To analyse how these factors interact and affect seedling recruitment, a bottleneck in the lifecycle of many trees. Such information is required to manage the dynamics of these species. We used both published and unpublished demographic and dispersal data to assess population growth and invasion speed of invading pines. A demographic and spatially explicit model, which included density dependence and stochasticity in dispersal, demography and environment, was run for different scenarios of sheep grazing pressure (nil, extensive or intensive), shrub cover (0, 10 or 20%) and drought frequency (past-to-present or future). For each scenario, population growth rate, invasion speed and elasticity of invasion speed to each demographic and dispersal parameter were computed. Grazing was the main factor for limiting invasion speed. Shrub cover reduced tree spread under nil or extensive grazing pressure, but increased it under intensive grazing pressure. Although dry years led to nil seedling establishment rates, an increase in their frequency had surprisingly few effects on pine invasion speed. This last result remained unchanged when very dry years, inducing seedling, but also sapling mortality were introduced. In most environmental conditions, population growth rate and invasion speed were higher for the introduced than for the native pine. Elasticity analysis highlighted the importance of demographic parameters on invasion speed, notably adult and sapling survival. Tree invasion speed may rely at least as much on human activities, like sheep grazing, tree cutting and non-native trees introduction, as on changes in climate factors. Therefore, human activities need to be explicitly taken into account in the prediction and management of tree dynamics.

International audience; Sphaeropsis shoot blight, caused by Diplodia pinea and D. scrobiculata, damage conifers throughout the world. In France, the first disease outbreaks were reported during the 90 ies. The factors associated with the pathogen presence in stands and the relationship between pathogen and disease distributions were analysed in order to understand the Sphaeropsis emergence. Eighty two stands of Pinus nigra, P. sylvestris, P. pinaster and P. radiata were visited. Cones were collected on the ground to assess the pathogen frequency. Diplodia spp were isolated and determined by a species-specific PCR test. The role of potential explaining factors of D. pinea prevalence on cones was analysed by logistic regression. D. pinea was the dominant species in visited stands. The main factors influencing the pathogen presence selected in the models were host species (the pathogen being less frequent on P. pinaster than on P. nigra and P. sylvestris cones), winter temperature and summer rain, which were both positively correlated with cone colonization. The climate became more favourable to D. pinea presence within the last 15 years compared to the previous 30-year period. By contrast, future climatic changes over the next 40 years should have far less impact on the pathogen presence.

Such models require spatially explicit tree locations as the initial state to run simulations. Given the cost of such data, virtual forest stands, where tree locations are simulated, are generally used as the initial state. - Purpose: The purpose of this study was to present models for simulating the spatial structure of complex stands. It focused on mixed oakScots pine stands of the Orleans forest (France) and on the spatial structure of canopy trees. - Methods: The spatial structure of the oakpine stands was modelled with appropriate point process models. The models consisted of a combination of Poisson, NeymanScott and Soft core. Simulation of the point process models was based on precise characterisation of the studied stands. Twenty-five 1-ha oakpine plots were characterised by the Ripley function. The models were then fitted to the identified spatial structure to reproduce univariate and bivariate spatial patterns in each spatial type. - Conclusion: This paper provides an approach for general modelling of a spatial structure of a particular mixture and may be enriched by other point process models for other types of mixed stand.

Wildfires are major disturbances in Mediterranean ecosystems of south-eastern France, and recurrent fires are hypothesized to have shaped the pine populations through a selective mortality of trees. Models of tree survival on an individual basis have been established for several Mediterranean pines after field surveys in burned areas (Rigolot, 2004; Fernandes and Rigolot, 2007; Fernandes et al., 2008). They indicated a size-dependent mortality specific of each pine species. But the effect of fires on the structure of pine populations are still lacking because large samples (generally > 1,000 per species) are needed. We used large databases (Cemagref and French national forest inventory) to assess to which extent the height, diameter at breast height (dbh) and bark depth differed between Pinus halepensis, Pinus pinaster, Pinus nigra and Pinus sylvestris in burned versus unburned areas. We also tested the effect of fire recurrence since the plots have been burned one to four times along the past decades. The fire history is known from fire maps since 1960. The results indicate a clear impact of fires on pine populations and an effect of fire recurrence. Clear interspecific differences existed in relation to traits explaining the resistance to fire or its avoidance such as the height-to-dbh ratio and bark depth. Mediterranean pines (P. pinaster, P. halepensis) populations after fire especially differed from those of mountain pines (P. nigra, P. sylvestris). These data confirm the classification proposed by Fernandes et al. (2009) with P. pinaster being a fire resister, P. halepensis being fire-sensitive and a fire-evader able to survive after fire, and P. sylvestris and P. nigra likely to be restricted to low-severity surface fires.
