The inverse probability of treatment-weighted estimation supported these results. Additionally, LDH contributed significantly to four surgical prognostic models, enhancing their predictive capability. Our study revealed a significant association between preoperative LDH and in-hospital mortality, MINS, and ICU admission following noncardiac surgery. Purpose: This research aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of baseline prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) for the outcome of individuals diagnosed with non-metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 810 patients with non-metastatic NPC who underwent intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with or without chemotherapy. The best cut-offs for PNI and LDH were identified by X-tile software to be 48.5 and 150, respectively. To find the independent prognostic factors for survival outcomes, univariate and multivariate regression analyses were conducted, and AUCs were used to compare their prognostic values. Results: Multivariate analysis revealed that patients with PNI > 48.5 had better overall survival (OS) (HR: 0.502, P < 0.001), progression-free survival (PFS) (HR: 0.618, P < 0.001), and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) (HR: 0.637, P = 0.005). Higher LDH was associated with poorer OS (HR: 1.798, P < 0.001), PFS (HR: 1.671, P < 0.001), and DMFS (HR: 1.756, P < 0.001). The combination of low PNI and high LDH in non-metastatic NPC patients was correlated with poor OS (P < 0.001), PFS (P < 0.001), and DMFS (P < 0.001). The combination of PNI and LDH had the highest AUCs for predicting OS, PFS, and DMFS. Conclusions: PNI and LDH might become valuable predictors of the prognosis of non-metastatic NPC patients undergoing IMRT with or without chemotherapy. Objective: To analyze the value of serum lactate dehydrogenase in evaluating severe pneumonia in patients undergoing craniocerebral surgery. Methods: 268 patients undergoing selective craniocerebral surgery in our hospital from July 2020 to June 2022 were selected. They were divided into non infection group (n=185) and pneumonia group (n=83) according to whether they were complicated with postoperative pneumonia. The pneumonia group was divided into severe pneumonia 31 cases and common pneumonia 52 cases according to the severity of pneumonia. Serum PCT and CRP levels were measured by ELISA; The serum LDH level was detected by enzyme colorimetry, and the correlation between the serum LDH, PCT, CRP levels and the severity of the disease in patients with pneumonia was analyzed by Pearson correlation test. ROC curve was used to analyze the clinical diagnostic value of serum LDH, PCT, CRP levels in patients with severe pneumonia after craniocerebral surgery, and the prognostic value of serum LDH, PCT, CRP levels in patients with severe pneumonia after craniocerebral surgery. Results: The levels of serum LDH, PCT and CRP in patients with common pneumonia were significantly higher than those in the uninfected group on the 1st, 3rd and 7th day after operation (P<0.05); Compared with the common pneumonia group, the serum LDH, PCT and CRP levels in the severe pneumonia group were significantly higher (P<0.05). Pearson correlation test showed that serum LDH, PCT, CRP levels were positively correlated with PSI scores in patients with craniocerebral surgery complicated with pneumonia (P<0.05). The ROC curve was established based on the serum LDH, PCT and CRP levels on the first day after operation. The results showed that the areas under the curve of serum LDH, PCT and CRP were 0.840, 0.825 and 0.746 respectively. The ROC curve was established based on the serum LDH, PCT and CRP levels 7 days after operation. The results showed that the areas under the curve of serum LDH, PCT and CRP were 0.819, 0.725 and 0.684 respectively. Conclusion: LDH is highly expressed in patients with craniocerebral operation complicated with pneumonia, which is positively related to the severity of pneumonia. Despite its limitations, in part due to decreased specificity in advanced disease, serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is one of few serum factors used in cancer staging. This study quantifies the predictive capabilities of LDH in stage IV melanoma of the skin and explores the validity of suggested demographic discrepancies which may exist in its use. The 1975–2017 Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database was queried for stage IV cutaneous melanoma cases. Demographic characteristics were compared between LDH groups using chi-square and t tests. Subsequent Cox multivariable regression was performed to assess survival differences. 334 cases of stage IV cutaneous melanoma (average age: 63.0 years) with measured serum LDH levels were identified. Of these patients, 150 (44.9%) had normal LDH, 112 (33.5%) had LDH < 1.5 × upper limit of normal (ULN), 57 (17.1%) had LDH 1.5–10 × ULN, and 15 (4.5%) had LDH > 10 × ULN. Lower incomes were associated with higher LDH; individuals with incomes < $50,000 had the greatest proportion of LDH 10 × ULN (19.2%; p = 0.0031). LDH > 10 × ULN also had the lowest proportion of White patients (p = 0.04). On Cox multivariable survival analysis, increasing LDH levels showed increased risk of death (LDH < 1.5 × ULN: HR = 2.05, p = 0.01; LDH 1.5–10 × ULN: HR = 1.46, p < 0.001; LDH > 10 × ULN: HR = 5.91, p < 0.001). This study reaffirms the utility of LDH as a significant predictor of mortality with incremental severity, suggesting possible use for mortality projections. We note that Black patients and those with lower incomes may be more likely to have an elevated LDH. Background: To evaluate the predicting factors associated with distant metastasis (DM) for lymphoepithelial carcinoma of salivary gland (LECSG) following postoperative radiotherapy (PORT). Methods: We retrospectively collected 160 eligible patients from two cancer institutions. The DM rate was evaluated using competing risk method. Results: The median follow‐up time was 65.6 months. Elevated preradiotherapy serum LDH (ratio >0.5) (p = 0.006) and N classification (N2‐3) (p = 0.001) were independently associated with DM for the LECSG. After the risk stratification, the high‐risk subgroup was defined as the patients presented higher risk score (score >0), whereas 5‐year cumulative incidence of DM in the high‐ and low‐risk group was 30.9% and 6.0%, respectively (p < 0.001). Moreover, a significantly worse overall survival (OS) was observed in the high‐risk patients compared with the low‐risk subgroup (5‐year OS: 83.9% vs. 97.8%, p = 0.006). We analyzed the factors for post-remission recurrence in children with neuroblastoma through a retrospective study.Methods: A total of 179 children with neuroblastoma who achieved initial complete response were included in this study. Kaplan–Meier method and multivariate Cox regression model were used to assess the factors that may have impact on tumor recurrence after complete response.Results: The 5-year overall survival rates of the entire cohort (n = 179), recurrence group (n = 86) and non-recurrence group (n = 93) were 81.9%, 66.2%, and 98.7%, respectively. The 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates of the entire cohort and the high-risk cohort were 47.3% and 31.2%, respectively. RFSs were significantly reduced in children with age ≥ 18 months, INSS stage 4, unfavorable histology, bone marrow metastasis, osseous metastasis, serum NSE level ≥ 100 ng/mL, and serum LDH level ≥ 1400 U/L (P < 0.05). The independent risk factors for post-remission recurrence in the entire cohort were age ≥ 18 months, unfavorable histology, and serum LDH level ≥ 1400 U/L (P < 0.05). In the high-risk cohort, the independent risk factor for recurrence was serum LDH ≥ 1400 U/L (P < 0.05). Based on a new recurrence risk stratification, the 5-year RFSs of the children were 93.5%, 66.4%, and 22.5% in the low-risk, intermediate-risk, and high-risk groups, respectively. The area under the ROC curve of the new stratification was 0.773 (95% CI: 0.704− 0.842).Conclusion: Age ≥ 18 months, unfavorable histology, and serum LDH level ≥ 1400 U/L are independent risk factors for post-remission recurrence in children with neuroblastoma. Purpose Readmission is one of the measures of quality of care and potential costs. This study aimed to determine whether lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is associated with an increased risk of 30-day readmission in gastric cancer. Methods We performed a retrospective study of patients who underwent radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer at our institution between July 2014 and May 2018. Balanced cohorts were created by propensity score matching (PSM) with a 1:1 ratio to generate the elevated LDH (ELDH) group (n = 151) and the low LDH group (Control) (n = 302). To determine the incidence, causes, and risk factors of 30-day readmission, subgroup analyzes were performed and used to develop an efficient prediction model. Results A total of 788 patients met the criteria to be included in the study. The cutoff value for serum LDH was 215.5. After PSM, a total of 302 patients were matched in pairs (ELDH group, n = 151, Control group, n = 151). ELDH levels had a higher risk of readmission (p = 0.005, Odds ratio 3.768, 95% confidence interval 1.493–9.510). The pre-match 30-day readmission rate was 7.2 percent, and common causes of post-match readmission included infection-related symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Conclusions Patients with preoperative ELDH levels, postoperative complications, and high preoperative American Society of Anesthesiologists Scores had a higher risk of readmission 30 days after surgery.

Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and underlying cardiovascular comorbidities have poor prognoses. Our aim was to identify the impact of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), which is associated with mortality in acute respiratory distress syndrome, on the prognoses of patients with COVID-19 and underlying cardiovascular comorbidities. Among 1518 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 enrolled in the CLAVIS-COVID (Clinical Outcomes of COVID-19 Infection in Hospitalized Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases and/or Risk Factors study), 515 patients with cardiovascular comorbidities were analyzed. Patients were divided into tertiles based on LDH levels at admission [tertile 1 (T1), <235 U/L; tertile 2 (T2), 235–355 U/L; and tertile 3 (T3); ≥356 U/L]. We investigated the impact of LDH levels on the in-hospital mortality. The mean age was 70.4 ± 30.0 years, and 65.3% were male. There were significantly more in-hospital deaths in T3 than in T1 and T2 [ n = 50 (29.2%) vs. n = 15 (8.7%), and n = 24 (14.0%), respectively; p < 0.001]. Multivariable analysis adjusted for age, comorbidities, vital signs, and laboratory data including D-dimer and high-sensitivity troponin showed T3 was associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.04; 95% confidence interval, 1.50–6.13; p = 0.002). High serum LDH levels at the time of admission are associated with an increased risk of in-hospital death in patients with COVID-19 and known cardiovascular disease and may aid in triage of these patients. ABSTRACT Elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase (sLDH) is associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients with stage IV metastatic melanoma (MM). It is currently unknown if sLDH elevation correlates with distinct molecular, metabolic, or immune features of melanoma metastases. The identification of such features may identify rational therapeutic strategies for patients with elevated sLDH. Thus, we obtained sLDH levels for melanoma patients with metastases who had undergone molecular and/or immune profiling. Our analysis of multi‐omics data from independent cohorts of melanoma metastases showed that elevated sLDH was not significantly associated with differences in immune cell infiltrate, point mutations, DNA copy number variations, promoter methylation, RNA expression, or protein expression in melanoma metastases. The only significant association observed for elevated sLDH was with the number of metastatic sites of disease. Our data support that sLDH correlates with disease burden, but not specific molecular or immunological phenotypes, in metastatic melanoma.

Abstract Background The lung immune prognostic index (LIPI) is a marker that combines the derived neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level and is a recently reported prognostic factor of immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy for non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, there are no reports regarding the prognostic value of LIPI in small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Methods We retrospectively enrolled 171 patients diagnosed with SCLC and treated at Shinshu University School of Medicine between January 2003 and November 2019. Progression‐free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were compared according to LIPI, and we investigated whether LIPI could be a prognostic factor in SCLC using the Kaplan‐Meier method and univariate and multivariate Cox models. Objective: This study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict the neck occult metastasis in early (T1‐T2 cN0) oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Materials and Methods: The nomogram was developed in a training cohort of 336 early OSCC patients and was validated in a validation cohort including 88 patients. Independent predictors were calculated by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results: In univariate logistical regression analysis, gender, perineural invasion (PNI), blood vessel invasion, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, aspartate aminotransferase, prealbumin, globulin (GLO), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), serum sodium (NA), and serum chloride were significant associated with neck occult metastasis. Multivariate logistical regression analysis identified PNI (p <.001), LDH (p =.003), GLO (p =.019), and NA (p =.020) as independent predictors of neck occult metastasis. Cut‐off values for LDH, GLO, and NA obtained from AUC were 142.5, 26.35, and 139.5, respectively. The nomogram based on PNI and categorical GLO, LDH, and NA exhibited a strong discrimination, with a C‐indexes of 0.748 (95%CI = 0.688 to 0.810) in the training cohort and 0.751 (95%CI = 0.639 to 0.863) in the validation cohort. The clinical and molecular characteristics of localized diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with single nodal (SN) or single extranodal (SE) involvement remain largely elusive in the rituximab era. The clinical data of 181 patients from a retrospective cohort and 108 patients from a phase 3 randomized trial NHL-001 (NCT01852435) were reviewed. Meanwhile, genetic aberrations, gene expression pattern, and tumor immunophenotype profile were revealed by DNA and RNA sequencing of 116 and 53 patients, respectively. SE patients showed similar clinicopathological features as SN patients, except for an increased percentage of low-intermediate risk in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network–International Prognostic Index. According to the molecular features, increased MPEG1 mutations were observed in SN patients, while SE patients were associated with upregulation of TGF-β signaling pathway and downregulation of T-cell receptor signaling pathway. SE patients also presented immunosuppressive status with lower activity of killing of cancer cells and recruiting dendritic cells. Extranodal involvement had no influence on progression-free survival (PFS) or overall survival (OS) in localized DLBCL. Serum lactate dehydrogenase >3 upper limit of normal was an independent adverse prognostic factor for OS, and ATM mutations were related to inferior PFS. Although the overall prognosis is satisfactory, specific clinical, genetic, and microenvironmental factors should be considered for future personalized treatment in localized DLBCL.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an emerging zoonosis caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The aim of this study was designed to investigate the role of serum LDH, ferritin, and haptoglobin in studying the severity of coronavirus COVID-19 infection and correlations between the values of these laboratory parameters results and CT- scan values outcomes. This case-control study was carried out at the Department of Biochemistry, College of Medicine, University of Baghdad, during the period from October 2020 to the end of January 2021. This study involved 56 patients infected by coronavirus covid 19 and 28 apparently healthy subjects. Patients were subdivided according to their infected disease severity into severe (G1; n=28) and non-severe (G2; n=28) groups. Investigation including measurements of serum LDH, ferritin and haptoglobin. The mean (±SD) values of LDH (p < 0.0001), and median (1st Q-3rd Q) values of haptoglobin (p< 0.001), and ferritin (p < 0.0001) were significantly increased in non - severe patients group (G2) compared to healthy controls. In addition, the mean (±SD) values of LDH (p < 0.0001), and median (1st Q-3rd Q) values of ferritin (p < 0.0001of severe patients (G1) group were significantly increased compared to non- severe. The results showed that serum LDH activity had the highest ROC and AUC in differentiation between non-severe COVID19 and healthy controls at cutoff value (> 232 U/L). In differentiation between severe and non-severe patients serum LDH activity had also the highest ROC and AUC at cut-off (>553U/L). Serum LDH, ferritin were significantly correlated with COVID 19 infection severity and were excellent discriminators between severe infected and non- severe infected COVID 19 patients. Background: The present study aimed to evaluate the prognostic factors in human papillomavirus (HPV)‐positive and HPV‐negative oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) treated with definitive radiotherapy. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 101 patients with OPC who underwent definitive radiotherapy between 2008 and 2018. Results: The median follow‐up period of the surviving patients was 68 months (range, 8–164 months). The 5‐year overall survival rate was 69.8%. Univariate analyses revealed that poor survival was associated with male sex, smoking ≥30 pack‐years, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status ≥1, tumor‐node‐metastasis (TNM) stage III‐IV (8th edition), HPV‐negativity, serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) ≥202, C‐reactive protein/albumin ratio ≥0.15, and lymphocyte‐to‐monocyte ratio <2.90. In multivariate analyses, poor survival was independently correlated with smoking ≥30 pack‐years (p < 0.01) and LDH ≥202 (p = 0.02). Conclusions: The present study suggested that high LDH levels predicted poor survival after definitive radiotherapy for patients with both HPV‐positive and HPV‐negative OPC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solid organ cancers infrequently metastasize to bone marrow (BM). BM involvement by cancer in adults leads to poor prognosis and it becomes difficult to provide appropriate treatment. We aimed to study the clinical, pathological and radiological characteristics of adult patients with BM involvement at our institute. Eleven adult patients diagnosed with BM involvement associated with solid organ cancer were included in the study. Clinical, laboratory, radiological and treatment details were analysed. Carcinoma of the breast accounted for majority of the cases. Most of the patients had poor performance status (PS) at diagnosis. Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was found to be elevated in all cases. Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was elevated in all except 1 case. Median overall survival (OS) was 91 days. Background: Serum Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) is an easily available bio marker used to determine prognosis in various Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN). Its utility in Polycythaemia Vera (PV) is yet to be accessed. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of raised serum LDH in patients with JAK2 V617F positive PV patients and its clinic-pathological association. Methods: A cross-sectional study using non probability consecutive sampling was conducted at our institute from July 2018 to June 2019. Adult patients of either gender, newly diagnosed with JAK-2 V617F positive PV were included. Patients’ demographics, clinical characteristics and baseline CBC and LDH levels were analysed. Stratification was done with regards to age, gender, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, splenomegaly and thrombosis to see the effect of these modifiers on patients with raised LDH by using Chi Square test. p-value≤0.05 was considered as significant. Results: Forty patients were inducted in the study with male to female ratio of 2:1. Twenty-two (55%) patients had raised LDH levels and showed significant association with diabetes mellitus (p=0.001), splenomegaly (p=0.001) and thrombosis (p=0.018). Conclusion: This study observed raised LDH levels in almost half of JAK2 V617F positive PV patient. Elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase (sLDH) is associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients with stage IV metastatic melanoma (MM). It is currently unknown if sLDH elevation correlates with distinct molecular, metabolic, or immune features of melanoma metastases. The identification of such features may identify rational therapeutic strategies for patients with elevated sLDH. Thus, we obtained sLDH levels for melanoma patients with metastases who had undergone molecular and/or immune profiling. Our analysis of multi‐omics data from independent cohorts of melanoma metastases showed that elevated sLDH was not significantly associated with differences in immune cell infiltrate, point mutations, DNA copy number variations, promoter methylation, RNA expression, or protein expression in melanoma metastases. The only significant association observed for elevated sLDH was with the number of metastatic sites of disease. Background: The lung immune prognostic index (LIPI) is a marker that combines the derived neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level and is a recently reported prognostic factor of immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy for non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, there are no reports regarding the prognostic value of LIPI in small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 171 patients diagnosed with SCLC and treated at Shinshu University School of Medicine between January 2003 and November 2019. Progression‐free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were compared according to LIPI, and we investigated whether LIPI could be a prognostic factor in SCLC using the Kaplan‐Meier method and univariate and multivariate Cox models. Results: The median OS of the LIPI 0 group was significantly longer than that of the LIPI 1 plus 2 group (21.0 vs. 11.6 months, P < 0.001). The multivariate analysis associated with OS indicated that LIPI 1 plus 2 was an independent unfavorable prognostic factor in addition to poor performance status (2–3), old age (≥ 75 years) and stage (extensive disease [ED]). However, PFS of the LIPI 0 group was not significantly different from that of the LIPI 1 plus 2 group. In ED‐SCLC patients, the median PFS and OS of the LIPI 0 group were significantly longer than those of the LIPI 2 group (6.6 vs. 4.0 months, P = 0.006 and 17.1 vs. 5.9 months, P < 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: We confirmed the prognostic value of LIPI in SCLC, especially ED‐SCLC. Statement of Problem: Salivary and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels have been correlated with potentially malignant lesions. Salivary LDH levels require special testing and can be expensive. The need for a simple and cost-effective analysis tool is essential to detect the oral malignant lesions to benefit rural populations. Aim: The aim of this study is to estimate the serum LDH in patients with oral lesions due to the consumption of smokeless tobacco. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five patients with lesions were selected for this study while twenty patients served as a control. Levels of serum LDH were assessed. Age- and sex-matched controls (n = 10) with no smokeless consumption habit and with the habit but without lesion (n = 10) also had their blood drawn to assess the basal level of LDH. The results were then analyzed through the two-tailed t-test and Chi-square analysis using the SPSS statistics software. Results: The mean LDH value of patients with habit and lesion is 446.8 U/L; the mean LDH value for patients with habit but without the presence of a lesion is 421.2 U/L, and the mean LDH value for patients without a habit or lesion is 269.4 U/L. The patients having the habit of using smokeless tobacco had higher LDH values compared to the other two groups, and it is found to be statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Serum LDH values increased in patients with the habit of chewing smokeless tobacco.

Context: Head neck cancer (HNCA) in North-East India accounts for 54.48% cancers at all sites, one of the highest in the country. Increased serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity is considered as a marker of cellular necrosis while serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is recognized as an important marker of induction of tumor cell differentiation. Considering the importance and need of biomarker in HNCA and there being no previous study on tumor markers from this highly prevalent region, we intended to examine the role of serum LDH and ALP in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and epithelial precursor lesions (EPLs) and also to find their correlation with the different histological grades of tumor.Materials and Methods: This is a prospective observational study on patients with HNSCC and precancerous lesions attending Department of ENT of a Teaching Hospital. Serum LDH and ALP was measured in HNSCC, EPL and control groups and the results were statistically analyzed and compared using analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficient, and sensitivity-specificity analysis.Results: Serum LDH was found to be a significant marker of HNSCC. Total serum LDH level was high in both premalignant and HNSCC cases. There was a significant correlation between serum LDH and grades of HNSCC showing highest levels of expression in moderately differentiated SCC. Elevated serum LDH was also seen in erythroleukoplakia, leukoplakia, and verrucous lesion, but serum ALP levels were not significant.Conclusions: This is the first study from this highly prevalent region of HNCA showing that serum LDH could be regarded as a biomarker for malignant and premalignant conditions of the head and neck. Background Hemolysis, assessed by elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), is strongly associated with HeartMate II pump thrombosis (PT). However, it is unknown whether early intervention for elevated LDH circumvents the risk of serious PT requiring pump exchange. We sought to evaluate the relationship between elevated LDH and clinical outcomes, the effectiveness of early medical intervention, and risk factors for elevated LDH. Methods We studied 268 patients in the prospective, multicenter PREVENT study who had 2 or more LDH measurements at ≥30 days post-implant. Elevated LDH was defined as LDH ≥2.5× upper limit of normal (ULN) for 2 consecutive measurements. Results Fourteen percent of patients had elevated LDH. Stroke-free survival at 6 months was lower in patients with elevated LDH vs patients with normal LDH (83 ± 6% vs 93 ± 2%, p = 0.035). Elevated LDH resolved without intervention in 19% of patients, with intensified medical therapy in 43% and required surgical intervention in 38%. For patients receiving only medical therapy, survival was 94 ± 6% at 6 months post-treatment. In this subgroup, resolution of symptoms with intensified medical therapy was sustained in 15 of 16 patients, with PT occurring in 1 patient at 171 days after initial treatment for elevated LDH (202 days post-implant). Early medical intervention at moderately elevated LDH (2.5× to 3.2× ULN), as compared with higher levels (>3.2× ULN), led to more sustained resolution of symptoms without subsequent PT or need for surgical intervention (91% vs 26% at 6 months post-treatment, p = 0.002). Conclusions Early medical intervention can successfully resolve moderate LDH elevations (2.5× to 3.2× ULN) with a low incidence of death or PT at 6 months post-treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lactate dehydrogenase B (LDHB) expression and the level of serum LDH were involved in tumor progression. Correlations between these parameters and their prognostic significance were not assessed in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We evaluated LDHB expression by immunohistochemical method and serum LDH in 243 NSCLC patients treated with surgical resection [136 adenocarcinomas (ADCs), 89 squamous cell carcinomas (SqCCs) and 18 other type carcinomas]. Correlation between LDHB expression and serum LDH was assessed, and the prognostic significance was determined. LDHB expression was identified in 52% of SqCC and 55% of ADC tissue samples. LDHB-positive SqCC patients had a higher recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate than LDHB-negative patients ( p = 0.017). LDHB-positive and LDHB-negative patients showed similar RFS rates in ADCs ( p = 0.519). Multivariate analysis showed that LDHB expression was an independent risk factor in lung SqCCs (hazard ratio = 0.393, p = 0.028). A positive correlation was found between LDHB expression and serum LDH level ( p = 0.02).
