NARCISSISM , *SOCIAL media , *SOCIAL capital , *ECONOMIC impact , *MEDIATION - Abstract
Many risk behaviors, such as cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and problematic social media use (PSMU), are formed and developed during adolescence. These risk behaviors may become even more acute with lasting global economic impacts of the 2020-2022 COVID-19 pandemic. Previous research indicates that narcissism can lead to problematic social media use; however, there is a gap in the knowledge about the mediating and moderating variables facilitating this relationship. This study examines the role of fear of missing out (FoMO) as a mediator in this relationship and the role of social capital as a moderator for this mediation effect among Chinese adolescents during the 2020-2022 COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 1380 adolescents (825 females) anonymously completed the questionnaires which assessed the four variables of interest. Our results showed that fear of missing out mediated the associations between self-superior and other-inferior narcissism and problematic social media use, and this effect was stronger with other-inferior narcissism. Additionally, social capital strengthened the mediation effect of fear of missing out in the relationships between self-superior and other-inferior narcissism and problematic social media use. The results have critical implications for the prevention of adolescents’ PSMU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

First-generation students are young people whoenrollin a higher education institution but neitheroftheirparents / guardianshasfinishedhighereducation, whilenext-generationstudents are thosewhohave at least one parent / guardianwithhighereducation. Theresearchaimed to examinewhetherthere are differencesintheperceptionofself-efficacy for careerdecision-making, network socialcapital, employmentbarriers, adaptability and employabilitybetweenfirstgenerationstudents and next-generationstudents. 1678 finalyearstudentsofthe University of Sarajevo, the University of Tuzla and the University of Mostar participatedintheresearch, of which 65.8% werefirst-generationstudents and 34.2% werenext-generationstudents. Instruments used: Socio-demographic characteristics questionnaire, TheSelf-PerceivedEmployability Scale (Roothwell, Jewell&Hardie, 2009), CareerAdaptabilityQuestionnaire (Savickas&Porfeli, 2012; Babarović & Šverko, 2016), Social Network Characteristics Scale (Van Hoyeetal., 2009), AdaptedBarrierPerception Scale (McWhirteretal., 2000), CareerDecision-MakingSelf-Efficacy Scale (Betz& Taylor, 1993). The data wascollectedintheSpringof 2021 inan online format. Theresults show thatthere are no significantdifferencesintheperceptionofinternal and externalem ployability, as well as intheperceptionofself-efficacyin post-collegedecisionmakingbetweenfirst-generation and next-generationstudents. Significant difference swereidentifiedinmeasuresofsize, strength, and status of socialcapital. First generationstudentsperceivesmallersize (t = -2.21; df = 1676; p = 0.021), strength (t = -3.26; df = 1676; p = 0.001) and status of socialcapital (t = -3, 36; df = 1676; p = 0.001) whichindicatesthatfirst-generation students perceivethattheyknowfewerpeoplewhocanhelpthemin their job search, thatthey are lessconnectedwiththem and thatthosepeoplehave a lowersocial status compared to peoplewho are connectedwithnext-generationstudents. Significant differen cesinthe perception of financial (t = 2.99; df = 1676; p = 0.003) and externalbarriers (t = 2.17; df = 1676; p = 0.03) wereidentified. Theconclusionindicatesthat, at theendoftheirstudies, first-generation students have equalinternalcapacities to look for theirfirstjob, but thattheir perception of the size, strength and status of network socialcapitalisweaker, and financial and externalbarriers are greater. - Abstract

Civil society organizations are a relatively modern form of social groups that have developed from the need of individuals for active participation in the development and progress of society. They have found their place between the family, the state, and the market. Different definitions of civil society organizations point to a global interest in these organizations, and what is common in forming of all these definitions is personal advancement of the individual through the development of generic and specific skills, the need for civic activism, the development of independence from state institutions, non-profit and volunteering as part of participation in the work of these organizations. In this paper, we will explain how civil society organizations contribute to the development of generic skills in the student population, what are the most common motivations of students for volunteering, and what skills students consider to be most useful in the development of their future careers. The research was conducted on a sample of 136 respondents, members of student organizations, and we used a questionnaire that we sent via e-mail to multiple addresses of student organizations.

- Abstract
The aim of the research was to analyze socio-demographic predictors of social networks that university graduates can rely on while seeking their first employment - assessment of their size, strength of social connections and status of network participants. The network size is defined as an overall number of people an individual is connected with, and the network strength as a closeness of social relation between an individual and other persons in the network. Close friends and relatives are examples of strong ties, while rarely contacted acquaintances represent weak ties that are socially, economically and frequently physically distant. The status of a participant is operationalised as an educational, employment and economic status of those who form the individual's network. The research was conducted on a sample of 730 university graduates of public institutions of higher education in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The data were gathered through an online survey and are based on self-assessment. It has been determined that the individual's status predicts their assessment of their own social network: average salary is a positive independent predictor of the network's size, while average salary and father's employment status are positive predictors of the network participant's status that university graduates can rely on while seeking their first employment. The researched socioeconomic characteristics of university graduates explain between 2.8% and 3.45% of variances due to individual differences in the experience of social capital. The analyzed socioeconomic characteristics of university graduates were not connected with the experience of the strength of ties that form a social network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work is about emotions and rituals inside the intimate relationship of young people at a distance. This research aims to show how young people maintain their relationships, what emotions and rituals are represented and whether social capital, individually or jointly, can contribute to maintaining an intimate long-distance relationship. The research was conducted using a semi-structured interview method with six interlocutors, actually 3 couples who are in a long-distance relationship and who differ in their social status. The results indicate the importance of communication in a long-distance relationship, the existence of shared rituals live and online as well as the expression of emotions online. Also, research has shown that social capital can influence the quality of maintaining an intimate relationship at a distance if it is about strong relationships between individuals.

This research was set to explore social capital of the inhabitants of the city of Zadar. Social capital was researched by use of both, qualitative and quantitative methods, and for that purpose it combined two research approaches – Giorgi's descriptive phenomenology and Layder's adaptive-theory. In the phenomenological part of the research three phenomena were examined - social ties, trust, and civic engagement. This research section indicated that social ties are mainly focused on social support and social hedonism as well as that they are characterized by permanence and locality. Feelings of safety is also an important constituent of the phenomenon of trust, which according to the experiences of the research participants is built in a longer time and among persons that are closely related. Civic engagement shows great variety, both in the meaning participants ascribe to the phenomenon as well as types of attitudes and actions they include in the constituents of the phenomena. Engagement is mostly focused on the issues of social order maintenance. An important aspect of that phenomenon is engagement aimed at the esthetics of urban landscape and periodic, mass engagement triggered by the awareness of the problems of the persons who need certain type of help. In the adaptivetheory part of the dissertation social capital was analyzed in the context of two theoretical models. First addressed non-local model while the other analyzed social capital within the neighborhood. In the first model social capital, according to the research results was determined by the education and religiosity as well as the concept of amoral familism. The latter concept has complex effects on the accumulation of social capital in which it is responsible for both, lack of certain aspects of social capital as well as for their vibrance. In the context of conventional political participation, the feeling of political powerlessness was also important in explaining lower levels of that type of civic engagement. The second goal of the thesis was also to test Putnam’s theory of social capital. On the first level in which social capital was explored Putnam’s theory was largely confirmed. In the context of neighborhood social capital, the key processes relevant for the accumulation of social capital are religiosity and education, as well as neighborhood attachment and the urban density. The testing of Putnam’s theory on this level showed that the theory can be fully confirmed. The results of this research indicated that social capital theory is relevant on different levels on which it was explored as well as that it is relatively autonomous from the urban context in which social capital as a self-accumulating mechanism exists. This research also had methodological contribution, since it is one of the rare research approaches that combines phenomenology and quantitative research methods, as well as for combining descriptive phenomenology and adaptive theory.

This paper considers the concept of welfare mix in the context of its potential in the field of services for people with disabilities. Through defining the concepts of welfare mix and social model of disability, the author analyses connections and similarities between these two concepts. Influences of welfare mix on operationalization of social model of disability are being analysed. Application of welfare mix towards people with disabilities is inseparable from the development of social capital of local communities. Also, the application of welfare mix in the sense of a social model of disability is unthinkable without models of including service users in the process of decision making about delivering programs of social services. Finally, there are certain dilemmas about the future development of welfare mix which are being reviewed in the context of disability groups. The author concludes by confirming welfare mix to be an adequate framework for developing modern services for people with disabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The basic hypothesis of this paper suggests that children wich belong to religious families with patriarchal values and which higly value education, achieve a higher school result then students wich belong to modern and non-religious families. Traditional and modern families are depicted through Kolman's division and characterization in this paper, because the whole idea of paper relates to his hypothesis and the study of the influence of social capital wich family acquires on a religious gatherings, on the school success. The paper presents various definitions of social capital with a particular emphasis on Burdie’s definition and typology. Kolman's research relates to the United States with higher religious diversity and diffrent school structure, because of that paper presents examples of religious and educational research relating to the territory of Serbia.

In the last ten years, social media have revolutionized communication, work, leisure, but also the expression of users online. Leading the way users express themselves online is the social media Instagram, which is extremely popular globally and is used by more than 1.3 billion people. On Instagram, users present themselves through visual content, such as photos and videos. Research on Instagram mostly come down to issues of addiction, mental illness, or motives for using it, which prompted us to research this social media in a different way. We linked Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical concept of economic, social and cultural capital with the self-presentation of users on the social media Instagram. The research was conducted through content analysis with which we collected Instagram activities data and ways of self-presentation using visual content (which topic prevails, whether posts are sponsored, whether cultural content is mentioned, types of communication with audience etc.). The goal of this research is to describe the ways in which economic, social and/or cultural capital is presented in the self-presentations of users on Instagram. The sample consists of 200 posts with 40 profiles that are equally divided into 8 categories according to the number of followers. Through three topics (economic, social and cultural capital), we selected the indicators that best describe them. Collected data were coded, analyzed and than presented and discussed in this paper. According to the analyzed data, we can conclude that the capital is visible in the posts on Instagram and that it can contribute to increasing or decreasing the virtual status. In addition, people with lower economic capital tend to have fewer followers, while people with higher economic capital have more followers. Also, social capital helps to create virtual social capital that contributes to achieving higher virtual social status on Instagram.

On predstavlja opću paradigmu znanstvene metodologije za mjerenje efikasnosti zadružnog poslovanja uz istodobno uvažavanje teorije zadružnih načela. Metodologija predstavlja koristan dodatak klasičnim financijskim analizama koje se obično koriste za mjerenje efikasnosti investicijski usmjerenih poduzeća jer istodobno mjeri višekriterijsku učinkovitost zadružnog poslovanja. The doctoral dissertation proposes an innovative methodological framework for measuring and linking the cooperative principle's acceptance indicators with the business efficiency indicators. Cooperative entrepreneurship differs from other conventional business forms in the application of seven coop principles. The concept of each principle contains sociological factors that regulate cooperative business in the same manner as economic factors control the market. Because of these principles, cooperatives represent a practical business model for examining the relationship between social and financial indicators or measuring the impact of social capital indicators on the final financial result of cooperative business. The scientific interest of the doctoral dissertation is to examine the interrelationship between profit and the principle’s acceptance indicators. For this purpose, the strength of accepting principles among stakeholders is examined, and the socio-economic optimization model of cooperative business activity is constructed. The field research is conducted in the five counties of Slavonija, Baranja, and Western Srijem. The questionnaire is used to survey 202 stakeholders that are collaborating with 23 agricultural cooperatives. The survey collects data about the stakeholder’s socio-economic status, member’s attitudes towards principles, and information about the business organization. The Financial Agency (FINA) provided business indicators of cooperatives. In the first step, the business indicators during the five years were analyzed using Data Envelopment Analysis. The results show that two cooperatives achieve overall technical, pure technical efficiency, and scale efficiency simultaneously and represent an ideal business pattern. The three other cooperatives achieved only pure technical efficiency. However, despite their efficient allocation of resources, these cooperatives operate above optimal levels, decrease returns to scale and increase average production costs. In the second step, Confirmatory Factor Analysis confirmed the validity of the indicators measuring the strength of cooperative principles acceptance by stakeholders. The analysis confirms the robustness (invariance) of the model, which contains the six latent constructs with twenty-one indicators that correspond to the theory of cooperative principles: democratic member control, economic participation, autonomy (independence), education, cooperation among cooperatives, and concern for the local community. In the final step, the Potential Method confirmed the economic importance of cooperative entrepreneurship. Cooperative principles of economic participation (N3) and cooperation among cooperatives (N6) take two leading positions at both levels of the dual hierarchy, with minor differences in the overall ranking. According to business indicators, economic participation takes first place, while cooperation among cooperatives takes second place. They switch their positions when we are ranking principles concerning the existence of synergy between cooperative principles. The principle of cooperation among cooperatives is now in the first place, while economic participation takes second place. The importance of the research arises in the adaptability and flexibility of the methodological framework that allows simple interpretation of the results about principles acceptance. Also, it combines all essential criteria of the theory of cooperative entrepreneurship and clarifies what principles are preferable and which criterium is the cause. The framework can assist in measuring efficiency in other Croatian regions (or beyond) and sectors. It would represent a general paradigm of scientific methodology for measuring cooperative business efficiency while respecting the theory of principles. This method could be a valuable addition to the classic financial analyzes commonly used to measure the efficiency of investment-oriented firms. Also, it allows the multicriteria efficiency measurement of co-op business activity.

Very little literature is devoted to the effects of social risks in the social organization of the skyscrapers that are consistently associated with social disorganization. Some studies prove that crime, for example, as an aspect of social disorganization, strengthens the energy of a community, while others show that it leads to fragmentation. Drawing on the research of S. Saegert, Mr. Winkel and D. Cantillon, inventory of attitudes about the perception of living in skyscrapers buildings and their surroundings is composed . The study was conducted in two Sarajevo skyscrapers, and the aim was to identify important reactions of residents to social organizations in skyscrapers, participation in neighbourhood organizations, social capital, and security. Social organization at some levels is measured by the theory of social capital. Results in some respects suggest optimism and willingness of residents to participate in the social organization of skyscrapers, and some aspects are discouraging [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Volunteering is the voluntary investment of one's own time in an activity without expecting any material compensation. In this paper we investigate the reasons and motives for volunteering the student population in Croatia, taking into account student obligations (going to lectures, learning, and other obligations that the study brings with the fact that some students do student work) and maintaining social life (socializing with family and friends and the like). The main goal is to determine what student volunteers think about whether and how volunteering during their studies will help them get their first "real" job after graduation. We also examined the main reasons and motives for joining the student association, saw the advantages and disadvantages, gains and losses of volunteering, and found out what recommendations student volunteers give to their colleagues who have not yet tried in such an activity.

The aim of the paper is to indicate the potential of social action in generating positive changes within a local community. The special significance of the social action lies in the processes of reconstructions of societies that survived traumatic experiences which resulted in the breaking of social connections and left a deep mark in their social tissue. Phases of organisation and realisation of social action have been indicated, as well as the importance of engaging distinguished people from local community in an action. The special focus was put on social capital and its role of *connective tissue* as a basic potential for organising social actions in local community. Future research on the state of social capital in Bosnian society would be of great significance for the context of organising social actions in the first place, and then for other social activities. More active participation of citizens, by the means of social action, is a model that would help activate passive citizens' energy which is a key factor in the process of a democratic transformation of society. CIVIL society , *POSTWAR reconstruction , *SOCIAL capital , *SOCIAL networks , *COMMUNITY services , *FOCUS groups - Abstract
The paper represents the results of the research which is deepening and broadening the knowledge about developmental experience and sustainability of a psychosocial civil society association's work in the post-war community in the process of social reconstruction. The data were collected and analyzed by the application of qualitative methodology and interpreted within the context of theory of social capital and social networking. Six women who founded the civil society organization participated in the focus group. Ten categories related to actual needs in the community and eight categories related to civil society's experience of working in the community were isolated by the means of qualitative analysis. Categories' concepts are supported by verbatim quotations from participants. Research participants have reflected on the non-existence of the basic work conditions, support or recognition by the local authorities, which is related to the survival and possibility of further activities of the association in the community. The restraints that the association is faced with represent a continuation on the existing research that emphasized how human and social capital is lowered by the systematic neglect of the existing potential in the community. CITIZENSHIP , *VOLUNTEER service , *COMMUNITARIANISM , *INFRASTRUCTURE (Economics) - Abstract
The articles analyzes the level of development of citizenship in the Adriatic regions, i.e. in a selection of cities. For the purpose of analysis of citizenship, from the liberal and communitarian conceptions, as well as the theories of rational choice and structural theories, which are based upon them, various models of citizenship have been derived: the model of cognitive engagement, the model of general stimuli, the model of civil voluntarism, and the model of social capital. From said models variables are operationalized, which are measured according to a sample survey based on a random stratified sample of 1127 examinees. The results obtained by descriptive analysis of the models of citizenship testify to a varied distribution of examined variables, which points to the complexity of citizenship measurement. The distribution of results shows more or less expected frequencies of particular indicators, with no extreme deviations. The discriminative analysis has demonstrated that up to 9 percent of total variability between groups of examinees in different regions may be ascribed to sets of examined variables of different citizenship models. Such variability between regions is expected, for they have a highly similar cultural heritage with common history and a similar political and social context. Still, the ascertained interregional differences with regard to the variables of citizenship models, although they are not momentous, can be ascribed to some specific traits of areas under consideration. The results show that differences between examinees are caused by residence in a particular city rather than by social-economical and urban characteristics, which clearly confirms the importance of the social and spatial context, and of culturological conditioning in the development of citizenship. - Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL capital , *SOCIAL sciences , *INSTITUTIONAL economics , *SOCIAL history ,CROATIAN politics & government - Abstract
The concept of social capital (SC) has gained wide acceptance and usage in social sciences, particularly in sociology, political science and institutional economics. This paper reconsiders the dynamics of social capital in Croatia presented in a previous article (Štulhofer, 2001). Using data from the two cross-national social science research projects (World Values Survey -- Croatia 1995 and South East European Social Survey, 2003), the author analyses changes in generalized trust, trust in institutions, and membership in civic associations during the 1995 -- 2003 period. The findings point to a decrease in SC, which can not be solely attributed to the situational effects of war present in 1995. The strongest predictor of the negative dynamics of SC in Croatia remains the perception of corruption within state institutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article attempts to assess differences in social capital of religious and nonreligious respondents in Mediterranean and Continental Croatia, based on the results of a 2018 nationally representative survey. The approach to analysis is based primarily on Bourdieu’s concept of social capital, but in addition to “structural” (networks of relationships and reliance), it also includes “cultural” (different forms of trust) indicators. The results of the analysis reveal that religiosity of the respondents and the types of their social capital are differently distributed in Mediterranean and Continental Croatia, as well as in the capital city of Zagreb, which was analysed separately, since previous research suggested that numerous indicators for that city differ significantly from those of the general sample. The analysis also revealed differences in the levels of “generalized trust” and trust in institutions, which were included to complement insights gained by the application of Bourdieu’s (structural) analytical categories. The religiosity of the respondents has been shown to be related to their social capital in all the analysed geographical regions (both in its “structural” and “cultural” aspects), yet in somewhat different ways. These differences can be partly explained by different histories of the interpenetration of religiosity and culture in different regions. However, the results suggest that the position of the respondents in the space of social inequalities should also be further researched., U članku se pokušavaju razmotriti razlike socijalnog kapitala religioznih i nereligioznih ispitanika/ ca u mediteranskoj i kontinentalnoj Hrvatskoj, na temelju nacionalno reprezentativnog anketnog ispitivanja provedenog 2018 godine.
