The role of transition metals in chemical reactions is often derived from probing the metal 3d states. However, the relation between metal site geometry and 3d electronic states, arising from multielectronic effects, makes the spectral data interpretation and modeling of these optical excited states a challenge. Here we show, using the well-known case of red ruby, that unique insights into the density of transition metal 3d excited states can be gained with 2p3d resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). We compare the experimental determination of the 3d excited states of Cr3+ impurities in Al2O3 with 190 meV resolution 2p3d RIXS to optical absorption spectroscopy and to simulations. Using the crystal field multiplet theory, we calculate jointly for the first time the Cr3+ multielectronic states, RIXS, and optical spectra based on a unique set of parameters. We demonstrate that (i) anisotropic 3d multielectronic interactions causes different scaling of Slater integrals, and (ii) a previously not observed doublet excited state exists around 3.35 eV. These results allow to discuss the influence of interferences in the RIXS intermediate state, of core-hole lifetime broadenings, and of selection rules on the RIXS intensities. Finally, our results demonstrate that using an intermediate excitation energy between L3 and L2 edges allows measurement of the density of 3d excited states as a fingerprint of the metal local structure. This opens up a new direction to pump-before-destroy investigations of transition metal complex structures and reaction mechanisms.

In-situ carbon-thermal reduction of cobalt oxide nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes was studied by cobalt 2p3d resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). The in-situ 2p X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and RIXS measurements were performed at 500, 600, and 700 °C, where four consistent excitation energies were used for RIXS acquisitions. After 700 °C reduction, the XAS spectrum shows a cobalt metal-like shape, while the RIXS spectra reveal the minority cobalt monoxide phase. The holistic fit on both XAS and RIXS data reveals the respective contributions from metal and monoxide. We show that the relative precision to determine the monoxide content changes from ∼5.6% in XAS results to better than 0.8% in the RIXS analysis, suggesting that RIXS is a useful tool to track the oxidation state of nanoparticles under in situ conditions. We determined a relative radiative ratio (P) factor of approximately 5, where this factor gives the ratio between the relative strengths of the radiative decay channels compared to the nonradiative channels in CoO and Co metal.

The Co 2p3/2 X-ray absorption spectroscopy and high-energy-resolution (∼0.09 eV fwhm) 2p3d resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of the single-cobalt-centered polyoxometalate K5H[CoW12O40]·xH2O were measured. The low-energy dd transition features at 0.55 eV, unmeasurable with ultraviolet-visible (UV/vis) spectroscopy, were experimentally revealed in 2p3d RIXS spectra. RIXS simulations based on ligand-field multiplet theory were performed to assess the potential cobalt tetragonal symmetry distortion, which is described with the ligand-field parameters 10Dq (-0.54 eV), Ds (-0.08 eV), and Dt (0.005 eV). Because 2p3d RIXS probes not only the optical spin-allowed transitions but also the spin-forbidden transitions, we show that the current 2p3d RIXS simulation enables a series of dd feature assignments with higher accuracy than those from previous optical data. Furthermore, by wave-function decomposition analyses, we demonstrate the more realistic and detailed origins of a few lowest dd transitions using both one-electron-orbital and term-symbol descriptions.

Determination of the ligand coordination number and symmetry of a transition metal ion is important to understand reaction mechanisms in inorganic chemistry. The problem can be addressed through diffraction techniques or by spectroscopy. Here we limit ourselves to the latter and note that, historically, the problem has been studied with UV/Vis, or optical absorption or electronic spectroscopy.1 Recently however the field of resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) developed at a high pace.2 Here we show that metal 2p3d RXES is highly sensitive to the metal ion ligand field. We present a comparison of UV/Vis, 2p X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and 2p3d RXES on a series of cobalt(II) carboxylates. The X-ray data were acquired at the state-of-the-art ADRESS beamline.3 We show that 2p XAS and UV/Vis have a limited discriminative power compared to 2p3d RXES. Through ligand field multiplet (LFM) calculations we show that 2p3d RXES allows the most judicious analysis of the ligand field. While previous 2p3d RXES studies on metal oxides revealed its d–d sensitivity,4 this is the first such observation on inorganic complexes. More importantly, the notion that 2p3d RXES measures element-selective, more as well as more intense d–d excitations than UV/Vis, and that this allows a more reliable determination of the ligand field, is novel. 2p3d RXES will allow unraveling reaction mechanisms of important 3d-metal-mediated chemical processes.

We have performed 2p X-ray absorption (XAS) and 2p3d resonant X-ray emission (RXES) experiments on a CoO bulk single crystal as well as on 4.2 nm CoO nanocrystals. The single crystal data were measured with linearly polarized incident X-rays in the scattering and perpendicular to the scattering plane. An unprecedented total experimental resolution of 100 meV allowed the first Xray observation of the CoO T-4(lg)(F-4) manifold that occurs 120 meV above ground state. Detailed theoretical modeling was performed to assess the tetragonal crystal field splitting, spin - orbit, and superexchange parameters for both the single crystal and the nanocrystals. We show that 2p XAS is mainly sensitive to the octahedral field and 3d spin-orbit coupling, while the T-4(1g)(F-4) manifold in 2p3d RXES probes the tetragonal distortion and the superexchange interactions with high sensitivity. We observe that the nanocrystals have a reduced cubic crystal field splitting and a broadened T-4(1g)(F-4) RXES manifold that we ascribe to a larger average Co-O distance and an increased magnetic exchange in the nanocrystals. We demonstrate that further improvement of the RXES experimental resolution would not only allow for better disentanglement of the tetragonal distortion, spin orbit, and superexchange interactions, but it would also allow observing anti-Stokes features in the RXES spectrum.

The 2p3d resonant X-ray emission spectroscopic (RXES) measurements on 8.4 and 5.0 nm cobalt and 3.6 nm cobalt-nickel nanoparticles coated with oleate molecules are provided. The spectra reveal low energy resonant Raman features at 0.3 and 0.75 ev. In combination with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and ligand field multiple (LFM) calculations, these are ascribed to d-d excitations of cobalt ions in a low symmetry ligand field. Two different chemical environments of the ion may cause the transitions. In the first model cobalt ions in the nanoparticle outer atomic layer, resulting from the adsorbate binding, cause the excitations. These are transitions from a mixture of B-4(1g) plus E-4(g) to E-4(g) at 0.3 eV. At 0.75 ev transitions to B-4(2g) and (4)A(1g) take place. In the alternative model the excitations occur in a cobalt molecular species that might coexist with the nanoparticles. Here the transitions are from (4)A(2g) to E-4(g) and to E-4(g) plus B-4(2g) at 0.3 and 0.75 eV, respectively. On the basis of two-dimensional 2p3d RXES planes of the models and the differences between the three different nanoparticle systems, we exclude the first model and conclude that the metallic particles indeed coexist with varying minor degrees of molecular species. We observe however a second type of cobalt species, which is possible related to surface-ligated cobalt ions.

The temperature-dependent 1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of CoO have been measured with 0.3 eV overall resolution, and the RIXS planes have been analyzed with multiplet calculations. The analysis of the high-resolution 1s2p RIXS plane allows a more detailed determination of the ground-state electronic structure, as compared to Is X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The apparent absence of interference effects suggests that the lifetime broadening of the pre-edge states is (significantly) reduced from the edge lifetime broadening. The temperature-dependent RIXS planes are explained as a combination of the ground state and first excited state due to thermal population of the excited state, which are a result of the symmetry distortion, 3d spin orbit coupling, and magnetic exchange interactions. No features due to charge transfer and nonlocal transitions are observed due to the relatively small cobalt oxygen overlap as compared to higher valent systems. The successful determination of the spin state and crystal field parameters using hard X-ray experiments promises to make 1s2p RIXS a useful technique for in situ transition metal oxide studies.

In view of the limited oil reserves the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process is an interesting catalytic route to provide raw materials for chemical industries. In the last decades, a vast number of studies have been devoted to increase our understanding of this important catalytic reaction leading to a consensus concerning the mechanism.[1–4] Accordingly, MTO is thought to proceed through the so-called “hydrocarbon pool” (HCP) mechanism,[5, 6] in which methanol is added to an organic scaffold present within the zeolite framework. This is followed by elimination of olefinic species in a closed catalytic cycle. Microporous silicoaluminophosphates and aluminosilicates, such as SAPO-34 and ZSM-5, are often used as MTO catalysts because of their unique acidic and structural properties. In the case of ZSM-5 the formation of ethene and propene is governed by two different catalytic routes,[7,8] allowing in principle to control the ethene/propene ratio. Unfortunately, throughout the MTO reaction undesired carbon deposits are formed in the narrow micropore system of ZSM-5, leading to severely restricted diffusion and therefore limited catalytic activity.[9] To overcome these limitations efforts have been made to improve the pore accessibility during synthesis,[10–12] and/or in post-synthetic steps,[13, 14] resulting in significant improvements in the diffusion properties of ZSM-5. In this work, two commercial ZSM-5 zeolites with dimensions of approximately 200–800 nm have been studied by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM). The first sample, denoted as ZSM-5-C, was calcined for 6 h at 5508C, whereas the second sample, further labeled as ZSM-5-S, was steamed for 3 h at 7008C. Details on the preparation and characteristics of ZSM-5-C and ZSM-5-S can be found in the Supporting Information (Figures S1–S13, Tables S1–S6). We will show how STXM, in combination with bulk characterization techniques, allows investigating the physicochemical properties of ZSM-5 zeolites in a novel way at the nanoscale.[ 15, 16] More specifically, detailed chemical maps, with a spatial resolution of 70 nm, have been obtained of aluminum, oxygen, and carbon, even under realistic reaction conditions.[17–19] In this manner, the influence of steaming on the state of aluminum, that is, the coordination and spatial distribution, as well as on the MTO performance, has been unraveled.

Self-assembled colloidal crystals have attracted major attention because of their potential as low-cost three- dimensional (3D) photonic crystals. Although a high degree of perfection is crucial for the properties of these materials, little is known about their exact structure and internal defects. In this study, we use tomographic scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) to access the internal structure of self- assembled colloidal photonic crystals with high spatial resolution in three dimensions for the first time. The positions of individual particles of 236 nm in diameter are identified in three dimensions, and the local crystal structure is revealed. Through image analysis, structural defects, such as vacancies and stacking faults, are identified. Tomographic STXM is shown to be an attractive and complementary imaging tool for photonic materials and other strongly absorbing or scattering materials that cannot be characterized by either transmission or scanning electron microscopy or optical nanoscopy.

Photonic crystals consisting of nano- to micrometer-sized building blocks, such as multiple sorts of colloids, have recently received widespread attention. It remains a challenge, however, to adequately probe the internal crystal structure and the corresponding deformations that inhibit the proper functioning of such materials. It is shown that scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) can directly reveal the local structure, orientations, and even deformations in polystyrene and silica colloidal crystals with 30-nm spatial resolution. Moreover, STXM is capable of imaging a diverse range of crystals, including those that are dry and inverted, and provides novel insights complementary to information obtained by benchmark confocal fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy techniques.

The present status of in-situ scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) is reviewed, with an emphasis on the abilities of the STXM technique in comparison with electron microscopy. The experimental aspects and interpretation of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) are briefly introduced and the experimental boundary conditions that determine the potential applications for in-situ XAS and in-situ STXM studies are discussed. Nanoscale chemical imaging of catalysts under working conditions is outlined using cobalt and iron Fischer-Tropsch catalysts as showcases. In the discussion, we critically compare STXM-XAS and STEM-EELS (scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy) measurements and indicate some future directions of in-situ nanoscale imaging of catalytic solids and related nanomaterials.
