INTRODUCTION: Plaque psoriasis is a chronic condition that may impact patients work productivity. Tildrakizumab, an interleukin-23 p19 inhibitor, is approved for treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in adults. However, the effect of tildrakizumab treatment on work productivity in patients with psoriasis is not well characterized. METHODS: In this multicenter, open-label, uncontrolled phase 4 study (NCT03718299), patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis received tildrakizumab 100 mg at week 0, week 4, and every 12 weeks thereafter through week 52. Patients completed the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Questionnaire: Psoriasis (WPAI:PSO) at baseline and every 12 weeks from week 16 through week 64. The following four domains of the WPAI:PSO were examined: absenteeism (percentage of time missed from work due to psoriasis), presenteeism (percentage reduction of productivity while at work due to psoriasis), total activity impairment (percentage impairment in activities other than work due to psoriasis), and total work productivity impairment (total percentage of work impairment from both absenteeism and presenteeism due to psoriasis). Missing data were not imputed. RESULTS: Of the 55 patients enrolled, 31 patients completed all domains of the WPAI:PSO at week 64. From baseline to week 64, respectively, mean ± standard deviation (SD) scores improved for presenteeism (20.5 ± 21.7 to 2.6 ± 5.8; P

- Abstract
This study highlights the significant impact of long COVID on health care workers that showed reduced work performance and increased monetary loss due to presenteeism. This finding underscores the need for targeted interventions and supportive workplace strategies to mitigate these effects, ultimately enhancing health care delivery and patient safety. Objective: The aim of the study is to assess and compare the work performance loss (absenteeism and presenteeism) and the estimated annual monetary loss among health care workers with and without long COVID. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted between October 2022 and April 2024 using an online questionnaire. The shortened version of the Health and Work Performance Questionnaire was used to estimate the work performance effect among health care workers with a history of COVID-19 infection. Results: Health care workers with long COVID have a significantly lower absolute presenteeism and higher annual monetary loss of presenteeism. The mean annual monetary loss of presenteeism was higher in those with long COVID (MYR 10,866.61) compared to those without (MYR 9243.85). Conclusions: Implementing supportive work strategies in hospital settings is recommended to reduce absolute presenteeism and the annual monetary loss of presenteeism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Eptinezumab's impact on self-reported work productivity in adults with migraine and 2‒4 prior preventive migraine treatment failures is not fully understood. Methodology: Electronic diaries captured monthly migraine days (MMDs) reported by patients enrolled in the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled DELIVER trial (NCT04418765). The migraine-specific Work Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire, administered at baseline and each monthly visit, was a secondary outcome of DELIVER and used to model changes from baseline in self-reported monthly hours of absenteeism (decreased work attendance) and presenteeism (reduced work efficiency while at work with a migraine) in Canada, as the base case. Path analysis illustrated eptinezumab's impact on work productivity beyond MMDs. Results: As MMDs increased, monthly hours of absenteeism increased linearly while those of presenteeism increased quadratically. Best-fit models were improved after including an eptinezumab treatment effect, showing benefit over placebo after controlling for MMD frequency. Compared to placebo, patients treated with eptinezumab (pooled) had a modeled reduction from baseline of 7.2 h/month (absenteeism) (95% CI: −9.9, −4.5; P < 0.001) and 21.4 h/month (presenteeism) (95% CI: −26.3, −16.5; P < 0.001) over weeks 1‒24. Beyond MMD reductions, improvements in patient-identified most bothersome symptom (PI-MBS) and reductions in percent of severe migraine attacks contributed to eptinezumab's effect. Conclusions: Eptinezumab decreased absenteeism and presenteeism based on patient reports, with data highlighting the importance of considering the PI-MBS. The greater change from baseline than placebo in self-reported absenteeism and presenteeism was only partly explained by changes in MMDs, presenting a potential opportunity to decrease the cost of migraine in the workplace. Background: Despite the high prevalence of migraine in Europe, there is limited research on the burden among people with migraine. Methods: This cross-sectional survey used patient-reported data from the 2020 European National Health and Wellness Survey in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The study assessed the sociodemographic characteristics, health-related quality of life, depression, work productivity and activity impairment, and healthcare resource utilization among matched samples of people with diagnosed migraine (n = 3985) and compared to a matched cohort without migraine (n = 7970). The study also analyzed the burden across migraine subgroups stratified by the number of migraine headache days. Results: Lower health-related quality of life, higher depression, increased work productivity and activity impairment, and higher healthcare resource utilization were reported among people with migraine and ≥1 migraine headache days compared to matched people without migraine (all p < 0.001). Additionally, the incremental burden was also observed across migraine subgroups (1–3, 4–7, 8–14, and ≥15 migraine headache days) irrespective of the use of prescription medication compared to the matched controls without migraine. Conclusion: Migraine sufferers with ≥1 migraine headache days experienced worse productivity, lower quality of life, depression, and increased healthcare resource utilization than those without migraine, emphasizing the need for effective management strategies. - Abstract
Background: Psoriasis is a prevalent, chronic skin disease with a potential impact on work productivity, medical consumption costs, and quality of life. The influence of the extent of skin lesions on these outcomes is not well known. Objective: We determined associations of self-reported skin lesions with self-reported work productivity, medical consumption costs, and health-related quality of life in respondents with psoriasis. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included respondents with self-reported psoriasis in the Netherlands in an online questionnaire. We assessed the self-reported percentage body surface area (BSA) of psoriasis lesions. We used validated instruments to assess work productivity (WPAI-PsO), medical consumption costs (iMCQ), and health-related quality of life (EQ-5D-5L and the DLQI). We used ordinal logistic regression to associate BSA categories >1% versus 0-1% with outcomes adjusted for multiple confounders. Results: We included 501 respondents with a mean age of 43 ± 12 years; 64% were men. Median BSA was 2% (interquartile range 1–5%). A higher BSA was associated with higher overall work impairment due to psoriasis (common odds ratio [cOR] 2.44, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.40–4.29; n = 205), higher medical consumption costs (cOR 2.06, 95% CI 1.45–2.94) and lower health-related quality of life. Associations were strongest with a BSA cutoff of 0% or 1% compared to 2% or higher categories. Discussion: In our study, having few to no lesions in psoriasis was associated with lower overall work impairment due to psoriasis, lower medical consumption costs, and higher health-related quality of life. Introduction: Many patients who have undergone a periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) have had jobs preoperatively. Postoperative return to work and work productivity are important for livelihood security and the social economy. However, there is a lack of evidence on work productivity after PAOs. Therefore, this study investigated the return to work rates and influence of workload, clinical, and radiographic parameters on work productivity after a curved PAO. Materials and methods: In this study, the data of 68 hip joints among 48 participants who underwent curved PAO for symptomatic DDH were analyzed. Correlations between postoperative work productivity and clinical, radiographic, and workload parameters were assessed. Work productivity was evaluated using the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment (WPAI) questionnaire. Clinical factors were assessed using the modified Harris Hip Scores (mHHS) and University of California, Los Angeles Activity scores. Preoperative and postoperative radiographic parameters were compared with postoperative work productivity. The workload was categorized using the Reichsausschuß für Arbeitszeitermittlung (REFA)-classification system. Results: Of the participants, 98% returned to work and 87.5% returned to their original jobs. Work productivity was significantly improved in all workload categories at the 1-year postoperative follow-up. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that preoperative Tönnis and REFA classification grades were significantly associated with the postoperative WPAI. Conclusion: Curved PAOs can improve postoperative work productivity and return to work rates. Preoperative progression of osteoarthritis and heavy workload affect postoperative work productivity. Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis, can affect the quality of life and work functionality of patients. A multidisciplinary IBD management, based on clinical strategies and an adequate management of patients' occupational health, is necessary to improve disease outcomes, and support patients' personal, social and professional lives. Background: This study aimed to assess the employment status, quality of life, and work functionality in patients affected by inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). Methods: Patients (N = 216) were enrolled between June 2020 and October 2021. Personal, clinical, and occupational features were investigated. The Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire and the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire were administered. Results: Among the enrolled patients, 114 (53%) were employed. The mean absenteeism and presenteeism percentages of 10% and 37% were determined, with 44% and 39% of daily and work activity impairment, respectively. A poor Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) was retrieved (47 ± 12). Extraintestinal manifestations, disease activity, and HRQoL were associated with occupational outcomes. Conclusions: IBD can impact patients' work functionality. The association between clinical, psychological, and occupational issues suggests the relevance for a multidisciplinary management of the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aim: Chronic constipation negatively impacts work productivity and patients' quality of life. This retrospective study assessed the correlation between symptoms of chronic constipation and work/activity impairment with and without the use of laxative treatment. Methods: This cross‐sectional, observational, web‐based survey was conducted using the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment‐Chronic Constipation Questionnaire and included Japanese patients with chronic constipation receiving prescribed medication. Outcomes of interest included total work productivity and activity impairment and their correlation with constipation symptoms. Results: Among the 2351 analyzed patients (mean [SD] age, 51.7 [13.8] years), 80.7% were females, 63.3% had a disease duration of ≥10 years, and 1424 were working. The averages of total activity impairment, total work productivity impairment, presenteeism, and absenteeism were 39.2%, 33.9%, 31.2%, and 5.0%, respectively. The annual work productivity loss per patient was estimated to be 1.343 million Japanese Yen. Symptoms that had a statistically significant positive correlation with total work impairment (P < 0.05) were abdominal discomfort/nausea, abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, and unpredictable defecation timing. Total activity impairment was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by abdominal discomfort/nausea, abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, incomplete defecation, unpredictable defecation timing, loss of defecation desire, and straining. Work productivity and daily activity had improved in 71.2% and 72.6% of patients, respectively, after they received treatment. Conclusion: Symptoms of constipation, particularly abdominal symptoms and unpredictable defecation timing, can have a negative impact on work productivity and daily activity. Treatment focused on these symptoms may reduce the socio‐economic burden of chronic constipation in Japan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract While preventing renal damage and symptomatic urinary tract infection are of paramount importance to persons with a spinal cord lesion (SCL), patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are receiving much more attention than ever before. We performed a cross-sectional internet survey of 282 adult members of SCL patient advocacy groups and investigated, for the first time, the impact of different types of urinary catheter, including a Japanese reusable silicone catheter and a reusable intermittent balloon catheter, on PROs of persons with SCL. Intermittent self-catheterization (ISC) did not surpass continuous indwelling catheterization in terms of a disease-specific urinary quality of life. Urinary incontinence, regular ISC, and performing ISC away from home confronted these individuals. Work productivity and regular activities correlated fairly well with the disease-specific urinary quality of life. Bowel management problems affected all PROs evaluated. The absence of differences in PROs among the types of catheter used for ISC implies that Japanese reusable catheters have the potential to benefit selected persons with SCL. Further research is warranted to develop measures for maximizing work productivity by overcoming urinary as well as bowel problems.

- Abstract
Higher lighting intensity promotes workers' productivity but few studies focus on the problems caused by lower lighting intensities at tunnel construction sites without natural light. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between light intensity and workers' sleep quality, alertness, vitality, and work productivity through a theoretical structural equation model based on the literature review. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey, and 5792 valid responses were adopted for the analysis. First, the results showed that greater lighting intensity promoted workers' productivity directly and indirectly through three mediators: sleep quality, alertness, and vitality. Then, the whole sample was classified into four groups: high intensity/high comfort, moderate intensity/moderate comfort, moderate intensity/low comfort, and low intensity/low comfort. The clustered results showed that the lighting conditions of tunnel construction sites were generally poor and that lighting comfort promoted workers' productivity to some extent. Besides, the influence of lighting intensity on productivity declined with improved lighting conditions while the impact of lighting intensity on workers' physiological and psychological status showed differing trends as lighting conditions varied. However, the relationships between workers' physiological and psychological status and productivity remained stable regardless of the lighting conditions. The findings could provide a reference for developing corresponding measures to promote workers' productivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Nurses play a vital role in ensuring effective patient care delivery and organizational productivity. Hence, it becomes imperative to prioritize their psychological well-being and explore how its impairment may be associated with their productivity loss. Aims: The study aims to investigate the relationship between nurses' psychological well-being and their work productivity loss by examining how nurses self-reported their own psychological well-being and work productivity loss. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was conducted at an Egyptian university hospital. A convenience sample of 400 nurses completed two tools: (a) Outcome Questionnaire-45 was used to assess the psychological well-being of nurses and (b) the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment – General Health Questionnaire was used to measure nurses' work productivity. Results: Among the 400 surveyed nurses, 66.7% reported overall poor psychological well-being. Regarding work productivity loss, 22.8% of nurses missed an average of 974.81 work hours due to absenteeism, and 62.0% lost an average of 10,630 work hours due to presenteeism. Additionally, 75.5% experienced impaired daily living activities. Approximately 13.4% of total working hours were missed due to health problems or psychological distress. Regression analysis revealed that poor psychological well-being significantly predicts work productivity loss, accounting for 2.0% of absenteeism, 11.0% of presenteeism, 17.0% of daily activity impairment, and 9.0% of overall productivity loss, with the model being significant (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Nurses often experience poor psychological well-being and distress that hinder their daily activities and cause work productivity loss. Therefore, hospital management should prioritize improving nurses' physical and mental health and bolstering their self-efficacy and resilience to minimize the effects of symptom distress on productivity. Investing in nurses' well-being through managerial caring, organizational support, and fostering a supportive work environment are vital strategies for promoting quality patient care and enhancing their work productivity. PSYCHOLOGICAL burnout , *MASLACH Burnout Inventory , *QUANTILE regression , *TELECOMMUTING , *PSYCHOLOGICAL factors - Abstract
Background: Migraine, a condition affecting 12% of the population, is a prevalent cause of disability, significantly impacts individuals during their most productive working years. Several studies have established that a migraine patient's job performance is often limited by absenteeism and presenteeism. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of migraines on occupational burnout, which affects up to 40% of workers. Methods: A subset of participants from the Negev Migraine Cohort, including both migraine patients and non-migraine controls, were asked to complete the study questionnaire. The main exposures of interest were migraine diagnosis and severity. The primary outcome was occupational burnout. Migraine severity and associated disability were evaluated using the Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) score, psychiatric comorbidities using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale – 21 Items (DASS-21) scale and occupational burnout using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS version) scale. Statistical analyses included multivariable quantile regression models to identify associations and adjust for potential confounders. Results: In total, 675 migraine patients and 232 non-migraine participants participated in the study. Migraine patients exhibited higher rates of depression (mean DASS-21: 0.864 vs. 0.664, standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.262), tended to work longer hours (median weekly hours: 40.0 vs. 36.0, SMD = 0.148) and expressed a preference for remote work (20.3% vs. 10.3%, SMD = 0.097). Migraine patients reported significantly higher levels of occupational burnout (mean burnout score: 3.46 vs. 2.82, SMD = 0.469). Controlling for depression, anxiety and stress, migraine diagnosis (25th percentile estimate = 0.67, p = 0.002, 75th percentile estimate = 0.92, p = 0.032) and migraine severity (estimates: 2.2–5.3, p < 0.001 for all) were associated with higher levels of occupational burnout. Conclusions: Migraine diagnosis and severity is associated with an occupational burnout, after controlling for various psychological and work-related factors. The findings underscore the need for workplace adjustments to support migraine patients' participation in the work market. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The main objective of this study was to examine the burden of schizophrenia, depression, Alzheimer's disease/dementia, and stroke on caregivers and non-caregivers in Japan. This study also aimed to provide a comparative landscape on the burden of caregiving for each disorder. Methods: The Japan National Health and Wellness Survey database, 2016 and 2018 was used in this study. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL), work productivity, and health care utilization were assessed using a self-administered, Internet-based questionnaire. The burden of caregiving experienced by each group of caregivers was compared with background-matched non-caregivers (controls) as well as with caregivers of patients with each disorder. Results: Caregivers of patients with schizophrenia, depression, Alzheimer's disease/dementia, or stroke had lower HRQoL, higher healthcare costs and work productivity impairment than non-caregivers. Furthermore, caregivers of patients with psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and depression had lower HRQoL and work productivity than caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease/dementia and stroke. In addition, according to the Caregiver Reaction Assessment (CRA), caregivers of patients with schizophrenia and depression were more inclined to perceive a loss in physical strength and financial burden to the same extent as their self-esteem. Conclusions: This study indicated a substantial caregiving burden among caregivers of patients with psychiatric and neurological diseases in Japan. The caregiver burden of psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia and depression) was greater than that of neurological disorders (Alzheimer's disease/dementia and stroke), suggesting a need to provide support to caregivers of patients with psychiatric disorders to be better able to care for their patients. To examine challenges in return to work (RTW) for persons with persistent postconcussion symptoms (PPCS) experienced by the affected employees and their managers. A survey of employees (S-E) and two surveys of managers (S-M1, S-M2) executed 4 months apart to capture the time perspective. Inclusion: Adults aged 18–66 with PPCS > 4 weeks, employed at the time of mTBI who returned to work within the previous year. Managers involved in their RTW process. Work status, working hours, work functioning (Work Role Functioning Questionnaire, WRFQ), work productivity. Ninety-two employees and 66 managers were recruited. Three-fourths of the employees had returned to work but only one-third worked under similar conditions. Weekly working hours decreased from 36,3 hours (SD = 10,5) before mTBI to 17,6 hours (SD = 9,7). Employees had difficulties with tasks 43% of time (WRFQ). They needed more breaks, struggled with multitasking and work speed. About 65.9% experienced affected work productivity. Managers reported lack of knowledge and difficulties assessing the number of working hours and suitable tasks. - Abstract
A disordered voice may significantly impair the ability of workers to perform optimally on the job, especially those classified as professional voice users (PVU). Voice therapy is a common treatment option for voice disorders, but there are few studies demonstrating its effect on work productivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the change in work productivity in PVU after group voice therapy. Prospective cohort study Academic Voice Center PVUs whose primary treatment for their voice disorder was voice therapy were recruited. Participants completed a 7-week group voice therapy course from January 2018 to December 2020. Participants completed the validated Work Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire (WPAI) which measured presenteeism (on the job work productivity impairment) and absenteeism (time missed from work), general self-efficacy scale (GSES), and Voice handicap index -10 (VHI-10) before and after group voice therapy. Changes in scores before and after therapy were compared using a Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. Twenty-seven PVU were recruited; 25 had complete data (100% female, mean age 45.4 years, 68% teachers). Presenteeism (SD) decreased from 72.0% (23.3) to 36.8% (24.8), which represented a significant improvement of 35.2% (27.8) [95% CI 21.7-38.7; P < 0.001]. Activity impairment decreased from 48.4% (32.0) to 25.6% (23.8), which represented a significant improvement of 22.8% (26.5) [95% CI 20.7-37.0; P < 0.00]. There was no change in absenteeism (P = 0.27). Patients had high mean GSES of 34.4 (3.7) and abnormal mean VHI-10 of 18.2 (7.2). Changes in VHI-10 and GSES were not significant. PVU had an improvement in work productivity that was largely represented by decreased presenteeism after completing group voice therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background and Aims The impact of inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] on work productivity remains unclear. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we quantify work-related outcomes and employment data among persons with IBD. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane library, Scopus, ProQuest, and clinicaltrials.gov from inception to February 2023, to identify studies on work productivity in persons with IBD aged > 18 years. Work productivity was defined primarily by the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment [WPAI] questionnaire which includes absenteeism, presenteeism, overall work impairment, and non-work activity impairment. In addition, we included data on employment, sick leaves, disability pensions, and indirect costs due to productivity loss. Pooled effect analysis was conducted using a random-effects model for pooled estimates of continuous and proportional data with 95% confidence intervals. Results Among all patients with IBD, the pooled estimates were 16.4% for absenteeism, 35.9% for presenteeism, 39.4% for overall work impairment, and 46.0% for non-work activity impairment. Indirect costs from overall work impairment were 5131.09 euros/patient/year. Only two-thirds of IBD patients were employed, and one in three lost their jobs due to IBD. Among those employed, 39.5% report sick days, 21.3% report work disability, and 12.3% receive disability pensions. Most studies demonstrate clinically meaningful improvements in work productivity with medical and/or surgical therapies. Conclusion Persons with IBD experience significant work impairment and associated indirect costs. This highlights the need for appropriate workplace accommodations and timely medical therapy to alleviate the burden of disease and improve work outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Influenza and influenza-like illness (ILI) pose significant clinical and economic burdens globally each year. This systematic literature review examined quantitative studies evaluating the impact of patients' influenza/ILI on their caregivers' well-being, focusing on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), work productivity, and activity impairment. A comprehensive search across six databases, including the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Embase, MEDLINE via PubMed, Ovid, PsycNet, and Web of Science, yielded 18,689 records, of which 13,156 abstracts were screened, and 662 full-text articles were reviewed from January 2007 to April 2024. Thirty-six studies [HRQoL: 2; productivity: 33; both: 1] covering 22 countries were included. Caregivers of 47,758 influenza or ILI patients across 123 study cohorts were assessed in the review. The mean workday loss among caregivers ranged from 0.5 to 10.7 days per episode, influenced by patients' influenza status (positive or negative), disease severity (mild or moderate-to-severe), age, viral type (influenza A or B), and vaccination/treatment usage. The HRQoL of caregivers, including their physical and emotional well-being, was affected by a patient's influenza or ILI, where the severity and duration of a patient's illness were associated with worse HRQoL. This review shows that the consequences of influenza or ILI significantly affect not only patients but also their caregivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness globally, presents a growing public health concern with its prevalence expected to reach 111.8 million by 2040. This condition imposes both direct and indirect economic costs. In addition to medical expenses, indirect costs encompass lost productivity and adverse effects on mental health and independence. Early glaucoma stages primarily manifest as peripheral vision loss, but as it progresses, it significantly impairs one's quality of life. There is a growing body of research exploring the relationship between glaucoma and workplace functioning, including absenteeism and productivity loss. This systematic review aims to comprehensively investigate how glaucoma affects work productivity and the associated economic burden. Methods: This study adheres to the PRISMA guidelines. A literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and PsycINFO. Two independent reviewers screened titles, abstracts, and full-text articles based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Covidence software was employed for study selection and quality assessment. The Modified Downs and Black Checklist was used to evaluate study quality and thematic analysis was used to analyze data. Results: 17 studies met the inclusion criteria. The results revealed a significant impact of glaucoma on workplace functioning including, individuals with glaucoma experienced higher sickness absenteeism rates than those without glaucoma, glaucoma was associated with reduced labor force participation, leading to substantial productivity losses. Individuals with visual impairments and blindness earned less than those with normal vision, contributing to a significant financial burden. Glaucoma had a substantial impact on daily physical, emotional, and occupational functioning. Individuals with glaucoma faced limitations in performing daily activities and experienced difficulties in social interactions and household chores. Visual impairment due to glaucoma resulted in work disability, with some individuals reporting glaucoma-related visual disability as the main cause of their unemployment. A significant association between unemployment and glaucoma was observed in various studies, particularly in developing countries. Conclusion: Glaucoma significantly impairs work productivity and performance, resulting in substantial economic burdens on individuals, businesses, and society. Addressing these challenges requires multifaceted approaches, including workplace accommodations and holistic care.

Background Psoriasis is a prevalent, chronic skin disease with a potential impact on work productivity, medical consumption costs, and quality of life. The influence of the extent of skin lesions on these outcomes is not well known. Objective We determined associations of self-reported skin lesions with self-reported work productivity, medical consumption costs, and health-related quality of life in respondents with psoriasis. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we included respondents with self-reported psoriasis in the Netherlands in an online questionnaire. Results We included 501 respondents with a mean age of 43 ± 12 years; 64% were men. Associations were strongest with a BSA cutoff of 0% or 1% compared to 2% or higher categories.Discussion In our study, having few to no lesions in psoriasis was associated with lower overall work impairment due to psoriasis, lower medical consumption costs, and higher health-related quality of life.

Wood fuel from the agroforestry sector is one of the main strategies cited by the EU for reducing energetic dependance on foreign markets. Its sustainability, both economic and environmental, can be improved through the optimization of harvesting and chipping operations. This study was focused on the dynamic and energetic balance of the chipping phase carried out by a chipper operated by the power-take-off (PTO) of a medium-power tractor. Both machines were equipped with sensors for real-time monitoring of fuel consumption, PTO torque and speed, trunk diameter and working time during the comminution of 61 poplar trees grown in a medium rotation coppice system. The data analysis was carried out on the entire dataset (about 29,000 records) without considering their belonging to different trees. By means of proper data ordinations, it has been possible to define all the intervals in which the chipping stopped (e.g., between two trees) and to exclude them from the intervals of actual chipping. This has allowed forcomputation of operative and actual working time, as well as of the basic power required to operate the chipper and the power for actual chipping. Subsequently, the parameter values observed during actual chipping were related to the cutting diameters measured at the same instant. Subsequently, the dataset was divided according to seven diameter classes, and, for each class, the descriptive statistical indices of working time, work productivity, CO2 emissions, energy requirement and fuel consumption were calculated. Eventually, the correlation between the variations in trunk diameter and other parameters was verified both on the whole dataset and based on the class average values. The analysis made it possible to identify the conditions of greatest efficiency for the chipper. More generally, the method could help to increase the accuracy of measurements aimed at characterizing the performance of chippers from the point of view of dynamic energy requirements as well as in relation to different wood species.

Patients (aged ≥ 18 years) with MDD initiating treatment with vortioxetine in routine clinical practice settings were followed for 24 weeks. In this subgroup analysis, functioning was assessed using the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) in patients in full- or part-time work or education at baseline who remained on treatment at all follow-up visits (n=424). Depressive, cognitive, and anxiety symptoms were also assessed. For all endpoints, mean change from baseline at weeks 8 and 24 was analyzed using mixed models for repeated measures. Results: Clinically relevant and sustained improvements in patient functioning and measures of work productivity were observed over the 24 weeks of vortioxetine treatment. The adjusted mean (standard error) reduction in SDS total score from baseline was 5.4 (0.3) points at week 8 and 8.7 (0.3) points at week 24 (both P< 0.001 vs baseline). Significant improvements were observed across all SDS domains and in levels of absenteeism and presenteeism (P< 0.001 vs baseline for all endpoints at both time points). Significant improvements in depressive, cognitive, and anxiety symptoms were also observed over the study period (all P< 0.001 vs baseline). The proportion of patients in remission (ie, 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score ≤ 7) after 24 weeks of vortioxetine treatment was 65.4%. Vortioxetine was well tolerated; nausea was the most common adverse event, reported by 18.6% of patients. Conclusion: These findings support the effectiveness and tolerability of vortioxetine in working patients with MDD receiving treatment in routine clinical practice settings in China. Keywords: China, cognitive symptoms, major depressive disorder, patient functioning, vortioxetine, work productivity

Abstract Background Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common, functional gastrointestinal disorder. Because IBS often develops and worsens with stress, it requires treatment from both physical and mental perspectives. Recent years have seen increasing reports of its impact on the daily performance and productivity of workers with IBS, leading to sick leaves and lower quality of life. Therefore, this narrative review aimed to summarize the work and psychosocial characteristics of individuals with IBS. Main body Workers with IBS report greater occupational stressors and work productivity impairments, including presenteeism or absenteeism, in addition to suffering from psychological distress, low quality of life, and medical and economic problems, similar to those with IBS in the general population. Anxiety about abdominal symptoms, as well as the severity of IBS, is related to the degree of interference with one’s work. Regarding the association between characteristics of work and IBS, shift work and job demands/discretion have been associated with IBS. Studies on specific occupations have revealed associations between IBS and various occupational stressors in healthcare workers, firefighters, and military personnel. Telecommuting, which has become increasingly popular during the coronavirus disease pandemic, has not found to improve IBS. Moreover, the effectiveness of medication, diet, and a comprehensive self-management program, including cognitive behavioral therapy, in improving the productivity of workers with IBS have been examined. Conclusion As mentioned above, the IBS of workers is related not only to their problematic physical and mental health but also to work-related problems; workers with IBS exhibit severe occupational stress factors and work productivity impairment. Further research is required to develop efficient and appropriate interventions for workers.

Loneliness is becoming an increasingly prevalent emotional experience in workplaces. While there is a growing body of research concentrating on the adverse effects of workplace loneliness on both individuals and organizations, strategies for effective intervention remain largely unexplored. Through the lens of Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study examines how employees' encounters with workplace loneliness as resource depletion can lead to a decrease in work productivity. It also assesses whether and how workplace mindfulness and job autonomy may buffer this harmful dynamic. A thorough three-wave survey involving 443 IT professionals was conducted to evaluate our theoretical model. The findings reveal that (1) workplace loneliness significantly erodes work productivity and (2) workplace mindfulness and job autonomy act as buffers, and in tandem, they synergistically transform the negative impact of workplace loneliness into a catalyst for enhancing work productivity. This is likely because, in contexts of high workplace mindfulness and autonomy, employees are able to effectively transform the negative emotions associated with involuntary solitude, capitalizing on the benefits of solitude. This research introduces an innovative framework for interventions to address the widespread problem of workplace loneliness and offers valuable practical implications for managing employees' loneliness. Background Fatigue is commonly reported in population surveys and has been identified in patients with health conditions as a key co-morbidity which makes remaining in work challenging. Such patients, however, rarely have access to programmes to help them manage their fatigue. Aims To quantify the relationship between fatigue, work impairment and health-related job loss. Methods We use data from the Health and Employment After Fifty study, a longitudinal study of people aged 50–64 years when recruited through general practices in England in 2013–14. During follow-up, fatigue was measured using the Fatigue Assessment Scale, work impairment was assessed using the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment scale, and changes in employment status were recorded. Results A total of 2743 participants were eligible for the current analysis; 23% satisfied criteria for being fatigued. People who were fatigued were less likely to have a partner, university degree, be physically active and were more likely to be obese. Their job was more likely to involve shifts, be perceived as insecure, have reported difficulties coping with job demands, and be unsatisfying. After adjustment for socio-economic, lifestyle and work-related factors, they were almost twice as likely to report both work impairment (relative risk 1.8; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.6, 2.1) and future health-related job loss, although the latter effect was only in those with other morbidities (incidence rate ratio 1.96; 95% CI 1.03–3.72). Conclusions Providing evidence-based support for workers with health conditions who experience fatigue may have an important impact at a population level in terms of extending working lives. FUELWOOD , *LABOR productivity , *ENERGY consumption , *MACHINE performance , *DYNAMIC balance (Mechanics) , *WOOD - Abstract
Objective: The aim of the study is to estimate COVID-19 absenteeism and indirect costs, by care setting. Methods: A population-based retrospective cohort study using data from the German Statutory Health Insurance (SHI) database to define outpatient (April 2020-December 2021) and hospitalized (April 2020-October 2022) cohorts of employed working-aged individuals. Results: In the outpatient cohort (N = 369,220), median absenteeism duration and associated cost was 10.0 (Q1, Q3: 5.0, 15.0) days and €1061 (530, 1591), respectively. In the hospitalized cohort (n = 20,687), median absenteeism and associated cost was 15.0 (7.0, 32.0) days and €1591 (743, 3394), respectively. Stratified analyses showed greater absenteeism in older workers, those at risk, and those with severe disease. Conclusions: The hospitalized cohort had longer absenteeism resulting in higher productivity loss. Being older, at risk of severe COVID-19 and higher disease severity during hospitalization were important drivers of higher absenteeism duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVES Rib fractures present a heavy pain and functional burden in trauma. Our primary aim was to determine return to work in patients with acute rib fractures requiring surgical stabilization of rib fractures. Our secondary outcomes were pain and quality of life. We also document the first application of the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Instrument, a validated injury-specific patient-reported outcome measure, for chest wall injury in the literature. METHODS A retrospective review was conducted on patients with rib fractures requiring surgical fixation in a single centre between 2008 and 2020. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure relevance, all eligible patients were asked to complete patient-reported outcome measure questionnaires. RESULTS Of 1841 trauma patients with rib fractures, 66 underwent surgical fixation. Thirty-nine patients were eligible and 31 completed the questionnaires. Pre-injury and post-injury answers were compared. The number of patients in employment decreased postoperatively from 22 to 16 (P = 0.006). For those who returned to work, there was no difference in hours missed but reduced weekly hours and productivity scores. There were significantly more patients with pain and on pain relief. There was a lower quality of life score postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS Approximately 1 in 5 patients who require surgical fixation for rib fractures will not return to work. This is the first chest wall trauma study that uses the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Instrument, a validated tool for work productivity outcomes. We recommend this instrument as a reliable tool for investigating return-to-work outcomes in trauma patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MENORRHAGIA , *LABOR productivity , *QUALITY of work life , *IRON deficiency anemia , *NAUSEA - Abstract
Background: Patients with iron deficiency anemia are treated with iron preparations, but gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting occur frequently. These symptoms may negatively affect the quality of life and work productivity in patients with iron deficiency anemia. This study assessed the impact of nausea and vomiting on the quality of life and work productivity of patients taking iron preparations for heavy menstrual bleeding or anemia. Methods: An online survey was conducted among patients taking iron preparations for heavy menstrual bleeding or anemia. Demographic data and information about medication use and the health condition were collected. The patients were asked to answer the 5-level EQ-5D version, and work productivity and activity impairment questionnaires. The outcomes were reported by patients in the presences of nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting. The association with the 5-level EQ-5D version utility score for the severity and frequency of the symptoms were also assessed. Results: A total of 385 patients were enrolled, and 96 were patients with nausea or vomiting, of which 94 were with nausea and 27 were with vomiting. The 5-level EQ-5D version utility scores for the patients with nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting were significantly lower than those of the patients without these symptoms (p < 0.001 for each). The 5-level EQ-5D version utility score was correlated with the severity of nausea and the frequency of vomiting per day (p < 0.001 for each). As for the work productivity and activity impairment, the presenteeism, the overall work impairment, and the activity impairment of the patients with nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting were significantly higher than those without these symptoms (p < 0.001 for each). The absenteeism was slightly higher trend was observed, but not significant. Conclusion: Patients taking iron preparations who have nausea or vomiting experience a significant burden in terms of poorer quality of life and higher work productivity impairment.
