This research investigated the hydrogen production and energy conversion from automobile shredder residues (ASRs) and paper mill sludge (PMS) co-gasified in a full-scale fluidized bed gasification plant. The results obtained from full-scale tests provided important information on the feasible assessment of ASRs-to-energy and the selection of alternative technologies for ASRs. Based on the analysis results of produced gas composition, H 2 , CO, and CH 4 composition produced from paper-mill sludge gasified were 4.17%–6.01%, 3.08%–4.32%, 1.71%–2.4%, respectively. Another C 2 gas composition ranged from 2.9% to 3.59%. The heating value of produced gas ranged between 1.64 MJ/Nm3 and 2.18 MJ/Nm3. In the case of 10% ASR addition, the heating value of produced gas was slightly increased to 1.84 MJ/Nm3-2.34 MJ/Nm3. The dioxin emission concentration of flue gas was approximately 0.064 ng I-TEQ/Nm3. It can comply with Taiwan regulation thresholds. The dioxin leaching concentrations of residues derived from gasification were also in compliance with regulation limits by the TCLP test. Meanwhile, in the case of 10% ASRs addition, the dioxin equivalence concentration of gasified residue was nearly 0.002 ng I-TEQ/Nm3. It was far below the current regulation standard limit. In summary, the results of this research have proved the performance of ASRs-to-energy by co-gasified with paper mill sludge using a full-scale gasification plant. The results obtained from this research also provided the information for selecting ASRs alternative technologies and operating full-scale gasifiers in the future. Paper and pulp mills generate substantial quantities of cellulose-rich sludge materials that are disposed in landfills at a large scale. For sustainability purposes, sludge materials can be bioprocessed to produce renewable fuels and useful chemicals. The enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose is the process bottleneck that affects the conversion economics directly by using zero-cost raw materials. In order to study and optimize the process, the characteristics of the sludge raw materials should be first evaluated. In this work, sludge samples were obtained from paper mills located at different locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Part of the sludge samples was washed (de-ashed) with hydrochloric acid while the other part remained unwashed. The samples were subjected to multiple spectroscopic analyses techniques to evaluate the morphological properties of cellulose fibers and to estimate the total structural carbohydrate content. The results showed that the de-ashing process changed some fiber characteristics and cellulose crystallinity structure in all sludge samples. Sludge sample A (obtained from Kraft pulp and recycled paper mill region) showed a high percentage of fiber, with crystalline cellulose, compared to the other two sludge samples suggesting that sludge A is a valuable source to make value-added products. Aspen Plus mass and energy calculations performed in view of the 'zero' cost and the reliable supply of sludge raw materials producing 2 mol H 2 /mol glucose. Moreover, the results showed that extracting crystalline cellulose from these sludge samples is more profitable than crystalline cellulose made from the other lignocellulosic feedstocks. The results reported here showed that the utilization of these sludge materials would be an economically attractive and promising alternative for the production of hydrogen. A recent commentary by Santhosh and Ravindran on our paper (Int. J. Hydrogen Energy 2014, 39:10,606) demonstrated that the interaction between H 2 and MXene (Sc 2 C and Ti 2 C) phases are not Kubas-type and should be of weak physisorption, and thus made a conclusion that 2D Sc 2 C and Ti 2 C are not suitable for practical hydrogen storage applications. In this responses, we recalculated hydrogen adsorption on 2D Sc 2 C and Ti 2 C by using different exchange-correlation functionals. And based on the calculated results, bare MXenes (especially the Ti 2 C) are suitable as hydrogen storage materials at temperatures of several tens degrees lower than room temperature. And the hydrogen adsorptions on the MXenes terminated with oxygen group were also investigated. Among the Ti 2 C, Sc 2 C and their oxygen-functional counterparts, the binding energy of H 2 on Sc 2 CO 2 surface is the closest to the ideal range of 0.16–0.42 eV/H 2 at ambient conditions, and thus the Sc 2 C with oxygen group is expected to be more suitable as hydrogen storage materials. This work examines the feasibility of co-gasification of sewage sludge and paper-mill sludge in a commercial scale plant and its application for sludge-to-energy conversion. The results indicated that the thermal reaction activity is increased with an increase in the amount of sewage sludge. This is due to the sewage sludge contains less fixed carbon content could decrease the activation energy, resulting in a thermal reaction is significantly enhanced. The synthetic gas (syngas) composition, that includes H 2 and CO, ranged from percentages of 2.59%–4.13% and 3.2%–6.91%, respectively. The heating value of the produced gas ranged from 1.67 MJ/Nm 3 to 2.56 MJ/Nm 3 , which was coupled with cold gas efficiency (CGE) that ranged from 46.6% to 77%. In the case of two tons of wet tested sludge with 67% moisture content, it could produce one ton of dry tested sludge with 30% moisture content after a drying process, and produce approximately 2.2 tons of syngas in gasification. After using a boiler and heat exchanger for energy recovery, it is possible to recover 4.46 tons of steam. This steam could provide energy for the dryer, and constitutes a positive sum on the energy balance in a commercial scale gasification plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, ceria flowers containing nano-sized catalyst Ni particles were prepared on alumina-silica fiber network for production of hydrogen from biogas. The CeO 2 flowers were prepared using hydrothermal method and then NiO was loaded on the CeO 2 flowers by impregnation method. The Paper-structured catalysts (PSCs) were prepared from alumina-silica fibers and the CeO 2 –NiO flowers using conventional paper making method. The loaded NiO particles were uniformly dispersed on the CeO 2 flowers with the use of polyvinylpyrrolidone as a dispersion enhancer, which was observed by FE-SEM and EDX analysis. The NiO particles were then reduced into Ni by using H 2. The PSCs containing CeO 2 –Ni flowers with various Ni contents (2.1, 3.4, and 4.6%) were used for dry reforming of CH 4. It was found that 3.4% amount of Ni on the PSC was suitable for reforming reaction, and the higher amount of Ni (4.6%) did not increase the CH 4 conversion. The PSC with the CeO 2 flowers had porous structure and large surface area leading to the better dispersion of the Ni particles with smaller size. This helped increase in catalytic performance, prevention of agglomerated particle catalysts at high temperature and coke forming after a long time operation. The CH 4 conversion of the PSCs containing CeO 2 –NiO flowers in the dry reforming of CH 4 was much higher (nearly 90%) with a smaller Ni content in comparison with the PSC without the CeO 2 flowers (with higher Ni content of 8.6%). Moreover, the PSCs with the flowers exhibited an excellent catalytic stability with the degradation of CH 4 conversion of only 3.1% after 50 h of reforming. In addition, the high oxygen storage capacity and oxygen mobility of CeO 2 resulted in a partial removal of coke forming on the catalyst particles during reforming. This indicated that the catalytic activity of the Ni particles dispersed on the CeO 2 flowers for dry reforming of CH 4 was superior to that of various Ni-based catalyst systems which had much higher Ni contents. Therefore, it is possible to use the PSCs containing CeO 2 –Ni flowers to generate hydrogen for use as fuels from dry reforming of CH 4. The anomalous heat effect reported in the paper, "Excess heat evolution from nanocomposite samples under exposure to hydrogen isotope gases" by Kitamura et al. published in the Int. J. Hydrogen Energy 43 , pp. 16,187–16,200 (2018), is investigated in the science of the cold fusion phenomenon (CFP) established in these 30 years. Hydrogen fuel is a non-toxic and source-abundant energetic system, but for its applications in the industry, several issues related to its storage must be resolved. Compounds like NaBH 4 appear as promising hydrogen sources, while can release the latter rapidly under controllable conditions with the use of heterogeneous catalyst systems. In this work, we synthesized a Ni–CoP catalyst by electrodeposition in a three-step process on carbon paper as support. The materials were characterized via SEM-EDS, XRD, and XPS techniques, while the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from alkaline NaBH 4 solutions was tested as a batch experiment. Ni–CoP catalyst showed a high amount of H 2 generated in a short time (∼550 mL in 1 min) and remained at 78 and 54% of its initial performance after respectively 100 and 300 h of a continuous hydrolysis process. Our catalyst revealed exceptional performance and stability at higher temperatures and a long process time, which have been a rare subject of investigation in other reports for NaBH 4 hydrolysis in the past. This paper examines the potential of solar and hydrogen (H 2) energy-based hybrid energy systems for residential applications. The growing need for energy and the demand for sustainable energy sources have led to the development of integrated energy systems that combine renewable energy resources to meet energy needs. This paper overviews recent studies on hybrid energy systems for on-grid and off-grid residential utilizations. Climate change and energy crises are twin challenges that require collective wisdom and polygeneration energy systems for sustainable development. Hydrogen is an abundant element in the universe that can shape the future of energy transmission and storage from electrons to molecules. This paper presents utilization of a solar PV assisted hydrogen and electricity production and storage system for a university transportation fleet of 43 student transit buses to reduce annual 9842 liter fuel consumption and 26.52 Mt CO 2 emissions. The system is designed, modeled, and simulated using TRNSYS® energy simulation software and optimized in TrnOpt linked to GenOpt for dynamic weather conditions of Gujrat (Pakistan), Fargo (USA), London (UK). As a model, the results of a 27kW p PV system are presented that assists an alkaline electrolyzer generating 12696 m3 hydrogen, 6348 m3 oxygen, 16848 KWh electricity exported to national grid and 11.56 GJ thermal energy annually. The proposed system generates energy vectors including hydrogen, electricity, heat, and oxygen with optimal performance during intermittent weathers. A green hydrogen (H 2) economy requires a sustainable, efficient, safe, and widespread infrastructure for transporting and distributing H 2 from production to consumption sites. Transporting a hydrogen/natural gas (H2NG) mixture, including pure H 2 , through the existing European natural gas (NG) infrastructure is considered a cost-effective solution, particularly in the transitional phase. Several reasons justify the H2NG blending option. The NG infrastructure can be efficiently repurposed to transport H 2 , by blending H 2 with NG, to operate as H 2 daily storage, matching production and demand and to enable large-scale seasonal H 2 storage. Although many benefits exist, the potential of existing NG grids for transporting and distributing green H 2 may face limitations due to technical, economic, or normative concerns. This paper focuses on the state of the art of the European NG transmission and distribution metrology normative framework and identifies the gaps to be filled in case of H2NG flowing into the existing grids. Green hydrogen is crucial for society's access to peaceful, secure, and stable energy sources to flourish sustainably and get universal government support. To protect the environment and provide energy security, it is essential to use hydrogen as a sustainable fuel and energy source to cover the energy baseload. This paper investigates the developments of renewable energy (RE) and the potential for green hydrogen in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. There is a considerable chance to use RE because of the MENA region's excellent solar radiation. On the other hand, many countries in the MENA region are classified as one of the poorest in water resources and are known to have water-energy challenges. This paper focuses on the water needed to produce hydrogen in countries with water scarcity. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis was performed for green hydrogen generation in the MENA, where recommendations for countries with a water-energy nexus can be made. Waste paper was evaluated for hydrogen gas production by sequential dark fermentation and electrohydrolysis. Acid hydrolysed waste paper towel hydrolysate was first subjected to dark fermentation to determine the most suitable initial biomass concentration. The effects of initial biomass concentration was investigated at constant substrate concentration by varying the biomass concentration between 0 and 6 g/L and the most suitable hydrogen production was obtained at 0.10 g/L. Then effects of initial substrate concentration was investigated at 0.10 g/L initial biomass concentration by varying the glucose concentration between 5 and 40 g/L. 21.33 g glucose/L resulted in the highest hydrogen formation yield and rate in the second set of experiments. When the effluent of dark fermentation operated at optimum initial biomass and substrate concentration was subjected to electrohydrolysis the overall hydrogen production of the sequential process was 30.12 mL H 2 /mL. Green hydrogen can be the transitional solution required to reduce anthropogenic emissions and enhance energy independency from fossil fuel. To improve green hydrogen adoption, a cluster-based infrastructure, called a hydrogen hub, is devised taking into account the demand-supply interplay coupled with transport ease. In this paper, we have identified sites across states that are conducive for hydrogen hubs. It involves a multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) framework deployed to assign priorities within competing set of criteria. A comprehensive analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is used to rank criteria that are connected to establish a functioning hydrogen hub. These criteria include, but not limited to, proximity to refineries, fertilizer plants, substations, chlor-alkali units, steel manufacturing plants, water availability, access to gas pipelines, railway line access, and finally distance to highways. Our analyses indicate that proximity to refineries and fertilizers scored higher (scores directly proportional to importance) while railway line access scored the least. These prioritised scores are used to spatially locate sites using geographical information system. In a total of thirteen states identified, Gujarat had the largest parcel of most suitable land for setting up hydrogen hub followed by Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. For India to set up a functioning hydrogen economy and achieve green hydrogen goals, it is important to identify states that can drive the agenda forward. In order to meet rapidly growing demand of liquid hydrogen in the future hydrogen industry and energy structure, the continuous catalytic ortho-para hydrogen conversion technology (CCOPHCT) has been once again proposed and has become an important choice to improve the hydrogen liquefaction units (HLUs). The origin, concept, and research progress of the CCOPHCT are systematically reviewed for the first time in this paper. However, the research depth and breadth of the CCOPHCT are insufficient to support its current application. To solve it, for the continuous catalytic ortho-para hydrogen conversion plate-fin heat exchanger (CCOPHC-PFHE) with better comprehensive performances, this paper comprehensively summarizes the research achievements in the related fields from the perspective of the unit analysis, including the ortho-para hydrogen conversion (OPHC), packing layer and plate-fin heat exchanger (PFHE), which to provide further thinking for the development of the CCOPHC-PFHE. Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are emerging sustainable power generation technologies that can be used for biohydrogen production and wastewater treatment. The prospect for hydrogen gas as a vehicle fuel suitable for the environment is enormous. MEC serves as a reactor for producing biohydrogen by mixing MFC with electrolysis. MECs are the most sustainable, clean, and effective ways to produce biohydrogen. Effective aspects impacting H 2 production, including microbial culture, electrodes, membrane, and substrate, have been explored for greater comprehension of creating MEC technology-based hydrogen generation. The present issues with effective scale-up include the costly production expenses of microbial electrolysis cells, their significant internal resistance, methanogenesis, and membrane/cathode biofouling. This review examines the various operational parameters in optimization studies that influence overall hydrogen generation. This paper also presents strategies to overcome the constraints listed above by creating effective architecture, including several reactor designs, biological, and physical properties, and the use of various operational conditions for improved hydrogen production. This study presents a bibliometric review focusing on the utilization of water electrolysis as a means of generating hydrogen as an energy carrier. The analysis includes research conducted over the past decade, covering from 2014 to 2023 (till August). Several key aspects are highlighted, including publication trends, the leading country in research output, journal rankings, and a citation analysis of papers related to water electrolysis. The findings reveal a notable increase in publication trends, with China emerging as the leading contributor in this research area. Furthermore, the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy is identified as the highest-ranked journal in terms of both publication number and citation impact. Additionally, the top ten most cited research articles and review papers are investigated to determine their influence within the field. Unitized regenerative proton exchange membrane fuel cell (URPEMFC) as a self-sufficient hydrogen energy system offers a unique proposition for achieving a net zero emissions future. The system combines the operation of water. Due to the design parameters and operating conditions of URPEMFC, the potential cycling from the mode switching, high temperature, humidified environment and the long exposure of metallic components to hydrogen are the primary factors causing degradation to the system. Consequently, the conventional graphite bipolar plate (BP) suffers heavily under such an environment while giving rise to alternative metallic base materials, such as titanium, stainless steel, and aluminum. Various surface treatment and coating methods are currently under investigation to provide the required corrosion resistance while maintaining feasible manufacturing process and cost. This paper presents an overview into the degradation phenomena of URPEMFC that contributes to the corrosion of BP that is affecting the performance and future commercialization of the system. The operating condition of the system is summarized in terms of fuel cells and water electrolyzers respectively, along with the integration of both operations as a system. Next, the paper outlines the degradation phenomena observed on BP and the behavior of various materials under such conditions. The performances of various base and coating materials have been compiled as have characterization methods that are useful in measuring corrosion resistance. Due to its excellent combustion properties and environmental performance, the development of hydrogen energy has become an international trend in recent years. However, hydrogen refueling stations, which are the infrastructure for hydrogen energy development, contain flammable gases such as hydrogen and methanol, which are highly susceptible to explosion and may threaten people's health and property safety. In this paper, a dynamic risk assessment method based on Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) is established for combustible gas leakage accidents in hydrogen refueling stations, and the methanol to hydrogen refueling stations and liquid hydrogen refueling stations are taken as research objects to quantitatively analyze their leakage risks and accident consequences. It is found that the leakage accident probability and consequences of methanol to hydrogen refueling stations show periodicity with a period of three months, while there is no periodicity for liquid hydrogen refueling stations. The probabilities of leakage accident and serious consequences in methanol to hydrogen refueling stations show a sudden increase within a cycle, on the other hand, those in liquid hydrogen refueling stations tend to increase linearly over three years with time. In addition, based on the diagnostic reasoning function of DBN, this paper identifies the two most critical hazard sources for flammable gas leakage accident in hydrogen refueling stations: human factors and corrosion factors, and provides guidance for relevant enterprises to reduce the risk. Hu et al. reported the hydrogen storage properties of Sc 2 C and Ti 2 C based MXene phases utilizing density functional theory (DFT) as implemented in the CASTEP code [1, 2]. Based on such calculations, the authors suggest that the MXenes should be a new family of potential hydrogen storage media. Their results claim a maximum hydrogen storage capacity of 9.0 wt% with an average binding energy of 0.164 eV/H 2 in Sc 2 C MXene indicating Kubas-type interaction between H 2 and the MXene. These investigations are of prime importance since they provide insight about further applications of MXenes for hydrogen storage. In these calculations they have used local density approximation (LDA) to estimate the adsorption energies. However, binding energies for H 2 with the MXene phases mentioned above obtained from more accurate calculations based on Generalised Gradient Approximation (GGA) and calculation including dispersion correction (GGA + vdW) show very weak binding energy (∼ 0.064 e V / H 2 ) suggesting weak physical interactions between H 2 and the MXene phases. Our accurate DFT calculations predict that these MXene phases are not suitable for hydrogen storage at realistic conditions. So we conclude that appropriate exchange-correlation functional should be used to extract hydrogen adsorption energies in nano-phases to describe their hydrogen storage properties reliably. A paper-structured catalyst (PSC) is a flexible planar catalyst that can be stacked on the anode of SOFCs and exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the reforming of hydrocarbon fuels at the operating temperature of the SOFC. Although our final goal is the realization of direct internal reforming (DIR) SOFCs fueled by biogas by applying a PSC, the tolerance of PSCs to sulfur impurities in biogas (H 2 S) must be improved for the practical application of PSCs to DIR-SOFCs operated by biogas. In this study, an inorganic fiber network in which a layered double hydroxide (Mg/Al-hydrotalcite denoted as HT) is dispersed was prepared by a paper-making process, and Ni was then loaded in this paper matrix via an impregnation process. To tackle the carbon emission problem, the exploitation of renewable energy resources (RESs) with zero emissions has gained much importance. In this context, hydrogen has become an important resource to involve itself in distributed energy resources (DERs) to generate electricity, energize vehicles, and heat our living areas. The utilization of hydrogen technologies is indispensable due to their procurement, environmental friendliness, and high efficiency for DERs. A challenging area in the field of hydrogen energy technologies is extracting efficient power and integration to DERs. This paper investigates how to model and operate a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack in a DER application to establish a living lab facility for educational and research purposes by covering Power-to-X (P2X). The PEMFC model of the studied system is designed in a MATLAB/Simulink environment and implemented in an experimental testbed. Thus, a fuel cell (FC) unit as a complementary source is preferred to be used near a photovoltaic (PV) array, a small-scale wind turbine (WT), and a lead acid battery energy storage system (BESS) by creating a P2X concept to form a living lab platform. Beyond the model, regarding the experimental part, a PV array, a WT, and a BESS are combined with a PEMFC module that is rated output of 1200 W. The presented paper focuses on renewable energy-assisted electricity, hydrogen, and cold energy production. Solar energy is used as the energy source in the study. The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is used for electricity generation, a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer (PEMe) for hydrogen production, and an ejector refrigeration system for cold energy production. The study is based on the exergy concept and examines thermo-economic and thermo-environmental analyses. The exergy efficiency of each equipment in the system is calculated from a holistic perspective. Considering the energy consumption values of the equipment in the whole system, the cost required for hydrogen production is calculated as 1.086 $/kg. The single-stack fuel cell system is utilized extensively in several industries. Unfortunately, the main problems are its low efficiency and durability, and unsatisfied reliability, especially in the high-power situation. Due to its significant performance, which includes high output power, durability, and reliability, multi-stack fuel cell systems (MFCS) are becoming more and more attractive. In this study, it is aimed to develope a control algorithm in parallel structure in the Matlab/Simulink software for the efficient use of hydrogen fuel consumption of PEM fuel cells – based boost converter using PI controller with PSO method. Models of both single and parallel connected PEM fuel cells were created in Matlab using mathematical equations in this paper. The analysis made in the study were applied for both models. PEMFCs were connected in parallel and only one DC-DC converter was used for the entire system. According to the load change, the required number of cells are activated due to control algorithm to provide the required power. The utilization of hydrogen-based direct reduction methods for magnetite ore smelting is an important way to achieve the goal of reducing carbon emissions. At present, the coupling mechanism of the multi-step reaction during the reduction process is unclear, which restricts the understanding of the rate-limiting steps and the accurate description of kinetic parameters. In this paper, the reaction characteristics and multi-step kinetics of isothermal reduction of magnetite by hydrogen with varying concentrations are investigated at 600–900 °C. Results indicate that the coupling relationship between Fe 3 O 4 →FeO and FeO→Fe two steps is temperature-dependent. In the low-temperature range (600–700 °C), the coupling relationship between the two steps can be described by the parallel model. In the high-temperature range (750–900 °C), the coupling relationship can be described by the series model. Meanwhile, the first-step reaction Fe 3 O 4 →FeO is controlled by the nucleation or chemical reaction model, and the apparent activation energies are determined to range from 27.25 to 48.59 kJ/mol. The second-step reaction FeO→Fe is controlled by the combination of nucleation and diffusion models, and the apparent activation energies are determined to range from 30.70 to 45.14 kJ/mol. • Multistep kinetics of isothermal reduction of magnetite by hydrogen are studied by TGA. • The coupling relationship of two-step reduction is found to be temperature-dependent. • The parallel model and series model are used to decouple the two-step reactions in two temperature ranges respectively. • The relationship between activation energy and hydrogen concentration is obtained. In response to climate change and the imperative for sustainable energy solutions, this study investigates the feasibility of producing green hydrogen and associated e-fuels (methane, methanol, and ammonia) using a renewable energy hybrid system in Dakhla, Morocco. Utilizing the System Advisor Model (SAM) software for simulation-based analysis, the research evaluates a hybrid system combining concentrated solar power (CSP) and photovoltaic (PV) plants against standalone counterparts. Various simulations comparing standalone PV and CSP plants with a novel CSP/PV hybrid concept were carried out. The hybrid system demonstrates significant promise, exhibiting increased annual energy yield and capacity factors up to 90%, leading to enhanced efficiency, performance, and cost savings with a Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) approximating 17 cents/kWh. Furthermore, this paper conducts an in-depth exploration into the feasible production of hydrogen and its derived synthetic fuels utilizing hybrid renewable systems. The study provides a thorough examination of the production processes, yields, and efficiencies of hydrogen and its derivative e-fuels, with a focus on green hydrogen production through water electrolysis, CO2 hydrogenation, the Sabatier process, and the Haber-Bosch process. It sheds light on the potential applications of these fuels in the transportation sector, including in electric and hydrogen vehicles and aviation. Hydrogen energy is one of promising non-polluting and renewable energy sources. In this paper, we present a first principal study of hydrogen storage in pure C 60 fullerene cage and Stone-Wales (SW) defective C 60 cages using density functional theory (DFT) with applying both the exchange functional B3LYP and the dispersion correction wb97xd at 6–31+g(d,2p) basis set. In addition, the counterpoise correction is applied, and the basis set superposition error is calculated. The calculations underscore that the hydrogenation binding energy of C 60 cages occurs through an endothermal process for C 60 H in with a hydrogen binding energy of 0.09 eV and through an exothermal process for C 60 H out , C 60 SW 66 H out , and C 60 SW 65 H out , cages with hydrogen binding energies of −2.17 eV, −2.96 eV, and −2.20 eV, respectively. Remarkably, for the first time, the intermediate hydrogen binding energy is found inside C 60 SW 66 H in fullerene, and C 60 SW 65 H in fullerene cages with energies of −0.26 eV and −0.81 eV, respectively. The hydrogen adsorption inside the cavity of C 60 SW 66 fullerene cage is thermodynamically possible below 289.8 K and entire pressure range considered. Our results highlight, for the first time, that the endohedral cavity of C 60 SW 66 is a promising new medium for hydrogen storage due to its binding energies (−0.26 eV) and its hydrogen storage weight percentage (5.3%) that are close to the optimal conditions specified by DOE for commercial use. This paper presents a cryogenic turbo-electric hybrid propulsion system (TEHPS) for a 70–80 seat class turboprop regional aircraft, integrating superconducting technology with liquid hydrogen (LH 2) cooling. LH 2 is selected as the cooling medium for the designed cryogenic cooling circuit, and the evaporated hydrogen gas is channeled to a hydrogen fuel cell for electricity generation, making full use of the energy content of the hydrogen. Parametric modeling of critical components is conducted to determine mass, power and heat loss parameters under feasible operating temperature conditions. Four propulsion schemes are conceptualized based on power matching combinations of turbo-engines, hydrogen fuel cell and battery during cruise, descent and landing phases. Performance comparison and analysis of the cryogenic TEHPS for a typical mission profile in 2035 is conducted, considering three projected scenarios – conservative, baseline, and optimistic – derived from existing data. The results show that propulsion Scheme 1, combining turbo-engines, fuel cell and battery for cruise, significantly reduces aviation fuel mass and pollutants emissions, cutting fuel consumption by 34.2%–38.6% at specific power parameters and potentially doubling the cruising range. Propulsion Scheme 3, employing turbo-engines for cruise and a combination of fuel cell and battery for descent and landing, achieves the lowest total mass and highest power-to-weight (PTW). With the future of green energy relying on increases in green-energy production scale to support demand, placing importance on location selection for new energy production methods is going to be vital to secure a zero-carbon future. In this paper, a method called H2Locate is introduced to conduct a down selection sequence for identifying hydrogen production plant location within a defined region. Following the method, resource availability, energy availability, and social impact metrics are analyzed to understand which variables are most vital and what data must be obtained to achieve confidence in the selection of an implementation location. An illustrative example using Oklahoma as the region is produced to demonstrate the proposed method. The counties within Oklahoma are analyzed to identify potential subregions for implementing a hydrogen production plant. Excel-based software, The Probability of Hydrogen Implementation (PHI), using publicly available data regarding energy, resources, and social variables is utilized to carry out the proposed method. The shared energy storage system is recognized as a promising business model for the coordinated operation of integrated energy systems (IES) to improve the utilization of energy storage and the consumption of renewable energy. As the hydrogen energy gradually receives more attention, this paper constructs the structure of a hybrid hydrogen energy storage system shared by an IES alliance in a dynamic pricing mode. A bi-level optimization model for the shared hybrid hydrogen energy storage system (SHHESS) is proposed to optimize the capacity configuration decisions and the pricing strategy jointly. The upper level determines the capacity and dynamic price of SHHESS with maximum profits and the lower level obtains the optimal operation of the IES alliance minimizing the total operation costs. The proposed model is solved by an improved PSO-GA algorithm and CPLEX solver. Finally, numerical tests are conducted in different scenarios. The results show that the hybrid energy storage system improves the daily profits of SHHESS by 70.3% and 5.44%, and reduces the renewable energy curtailment by 80.93% and 48.92% respectively compared to the battery-only and hydrogen-only systems. Additionally, the daily operation cost of the IES alliance is 35.2% lower than the individual operation scenario. Reducing the energy consumption of hydrogen liquefaction process is an urgent issue to improve the economy of liquid hydrogen transportation. A novel large-scale hydrogen liquefaction system, with a capacity of 100 TPD, is proposed in this paper. The pre-cooling system is composed of a mixed-refrigerant (MR) refrigeration cycle and a CO 2 –NH 3 cascade refrigeration cycle. Due to the auxiliary pre-cooling effect of the CO 2 –NH 3 cascade cycle, temperature of the pre-cooled hydrogen can be as low as −200.9 °C. A modified MR Joule Brayton cycle with an additional compressor is used as the cryogenic system to cool the hydrogen from −200.9 °C to −252.2 °C. Besides, a four-stage ortho-to-para conversion (OPC) process is utilized. Performance of the novel system is investigated and optimized using the Aspen HYSYS software. According to the results, the lowest specific energy consumption (SEC) of the proposed process is 6.15 kWh/kg LH2 and the exergy efficiency is as high as 67.4%. Based on the energy analysis, the best system coefficient of performance is 0.1751 with a 96.3% of p-H 2 in the liquid hydrogen. In addition, compared to the initial conceptual system, the proposed system exhibits significant performance enhancements, a 20% reduction in SEC and a 27.9% increase in exergy efficiency. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to assess the impact of refrigerant composition and hydrogen pressure on the system, resulting in the determination of the optimal proportions of refrigerant components and the optimal inlet pressure. Hydrogen energy plays an important role in achieving green and low-carbon transformation and development. It is a feasible method to produce clean hydrogen by solar irradiation. In this paper, a new type of InN/BTe van der Waals heterojunction is designed based on density functional theory. The calculated results show that the lattice mismatch of the heterojunction is less than 2% and has good stability, which is beneficial to the experimental synthesis. Under light irradiation, the transfer path of electrons and holes generated by light excitation is Z-scheme mechanism, which accumulates in BTe conduction band and InN valence band with stronger redox activity, respectively, and improves the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrolysis. The InN/BTe heterojunction under the standard hydrogen electrode can achieve complete decomposition of water and spontaneous hydrogen evolution reaction. The high solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency (up to 17.92%) and electron mobility (1820.54 cm2/Vs) indicate that the InN/BTe heterojunction is a promising photocatalytic material. In this paper, multi-objective optimization of the hydrogen production ( m ˙ H 2 ) of a solar-based cobalt-chlorine (Co–Cl) thermochemical cycle with grey relational analysis (GRA) has been performed. Monthly total irradiance averages (A), wind velocity (B), receiver height (C), receiver radius (D) and number of heliostats (E) are considered to achieve the highest the useful energy absorbed by the solar receiver ( Q ˙ a b s ), efficiency of the receiver (η r e c ), the overall efficiency of the system (η o v e r a l l) and hydrogen production ( m ˙ H 2 ). Orthogonal experimental design is planned according to L 18 orthogonal array created by Taguchi method. The percent contribution rates (PCR) on the Q ˙ a b s , η r e c , η o v e r a l l and m ˙ H 2 are determined with the help of ANOVA analysis. The optimal parameters are identified as monthly total irradiance average of 143.8 kW h (A 3), wind velocity of 5 m/s (B 2), receiver height of 8 m (C 1), receiver radius of 3 m (D 1) and number of heliostats of 850 (E 3), respectively. The highest Q ˙ a b s , η r e c , η o v e r a l l and m ˙ H 2 values corresponding to A 3 B 2 C 1 D 1 E 3 are obtained as 50.2 GW; 64.1%; 22.2% and 122.59 (tons/month), respectively. The PCR of the A, B, C, D and E parameters influencing the f-factor are determined to be 12.6 %, 1.92 %, 0.48 %, 15.03 %, and 53.20 %, respectively. Also, empirical equations are developed with regression analysis (RA) to estimate the Q ˙ a b s , η r e c , η o v e r a l l , m ˙ H 2 values. The peak explosion pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise of explosions in confined spaces are key safety parameters to evaluate the hazard of processes running in closed vessels and to design enclosures able to withstand explosions or of their vents used as relief devices. These properties are examined in the present paper, for hydrogen-hydrocarbon-air mixtures at sub-atmospheric pressures, using propane and n -butane as test fuels and variable hydrogen ratios between 0 and 0.3. The experimental study was carried out in a sphere and a cylindrical chamber at room temperature and sub-atmospheric pressures (between 0.3 and 1.0 bar). On the basis of pressure recordings, the characteristic explosion indices, i.e., the maximum explosion pressure (p max), maximum rate of pressure rise ((dp/dt) max), deflagration index (K G), and time to peak pressure (θ max) were derived. Numerical simulations were used to determine the adiabatic explosion pressures and adiabatic flame temperatures of isochoric combustion. The effects of initial pressure (p 0), hydrogen concentration, and shape and size of the explosion vessel on explosion indices are discussed. For each hydrogen concentration of the blended fuels, linear correlations p max = f(p 0) and (dp/dt) max = f(p 0) were found. In addition, the heat loss to the walls during explosion propagation was estimated on the basis of the difference between the adiabatic and experimental explosion pressures. Hydrogen energy is recognized as a crucial solution for addressing energy crises and advancing energy conservation and emissions reduction. It will play a significant role in the future integrated energy systems (IESs). However, the influence of seasonal variations in scheduling optimization of hydrogen-integrated energy system has rarely been investigated. A low-carbon scheduling model for IES, adopting multiple demand responses and a ladder-type carbon trading mechanism, has been established. Additionally, a multi-time scale dispatch optimization strategy considering seasonal hydrogen utilization is thus proposed in this paper. Specifically, day-ahead scheduling optimizes the system taking into account the seasonal variations of renewable energy and load. In the intraday stage, rolling optimization is adopted to address the forecasting errors introduced by wind and photovoltaic fluctuations. In the real-time stage, chance-constrained methods are employed to ensure short-term supply-demand balance. The efficacy of the proposed strategy is verified using real-world measurements, and the results show the multi-time scale scheduling strategy and multiple demand responses effectively enhanced the system's self-regulation capability, leading to a 12% increase in renewable energy absorption. Renewable energy production through electrolysis of water to obtain "green hydrogen" has gained interest as a clean energy storage option. However, integrating variable renewable energy resources into the grid poses challenges to maintaining energy balance and stability. In this paper, a hybrid energy storage system combining short-term battery energy storage system and long-term hydrogen-based energy storage system is proposed for an isolated DC microgrid with a structure similar to a hydrogen refueling station. Passivity-Based Control (IDA-PBC) is utilized for power converters regulation, ensuring global stability based on Lyapunov theory while accounting for the nonlinear characteristics of the physical system. The control strategy is designed to ensure a reliable supply of electrical energy to the loads, preserve the quality of electrical variables in the network, and secure the safe operation of system components. Additionally, to safeguard devices from overvoltage, a Sliding Mode Reference Conditioning loop (SMRC) is proposed. It intervenes only when there is a potential risk of exceeding predefined boundaries. Transportation is an economic sector that contributes significantly to global warming due to its high consumption of fossil fuels, and sustainably produced hydrogen is a major contender for an alternative clean energy source. Public transit is vital for environmental sustainability via reducing individual vehicle usage and traffic congestion, and the prospect of powering buses using hydrogen fuel has been extensively studied lately. This paper seeks to comprehensively review the current status of research on hydrogen-powered buses considering triple bottom line sustainability perspectives. A brief technical overview of prospective environmentally benign hydrogen production processes has been presented. Technological, economic, and environmental findings and research trends seen in recent analyses on hydrogen-powered buses have been summarized, along with the status quo of global hydrogen refuelling stations. Identified focal points for future studies include performance enhancements, refuelling infrastructure propagation, and policy formulation. The development of efficient, stable and low-cost catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the major difficulties in water electrolysis. It is also the key to realizing the large-scale production of hydrogen energy, a renewable and clean energy source. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention as novel precursors for preparing water electrolysis catalysts due to their high porosity and large specific surface area. In this paper, we use ZIF-67 as a precursor and modify it by doping transition metal elements Fe and Ni. Afterwards, Fe–Ni–CoSe 2 @NC is synthesized by a thermal selenization process. The results show that the HER overpotential of the catalyst after modification is reduced by 50%, and the efficiency of water electrolysis is significantly improved. Moreover, the catalyst has good stability under alkaline condition and is more economical than the expensive Pt-based catalysts, which provides more possibilities for industrial applications. Hydrogen is considered as a promising fuel in the 21st century due to zero tailpipe CO 2 emissions from hydrogen-powered vehicles. The use of hydrogen as fuel in vehicles can play an important role in decarbonising the transport sector and achieving net-zero emissions targets. However, there exist several issues related to hydrogen production, efficient hydrogen storage system and transport and refuelling infrastructure, where the current research is focussing on. This study critically reviews and analyses the recent technological advancements of hydrogen production, storage and distribution technologies along with their cost and associated greenhouse gas emissions. This paper also comprehensively discusses the hydrogen refuelling methods, identifies issues associated with fast refuelling and explores the control strategies. Additionally, it explains various standard protocols in relation to safe and efficient refuelling, analyses economic aspects and presents the recent technological advancements related to refuelling infrastructure. This study suggests that the production cost of hydrogen significantly varies from one technology to others. The current hydrogen production cost from fossil sources using the most established technologies were estimated at about $0.8–$3.5/kg H 2 , depending on the country of production. The underground storage technology exhibited the lowest storage cost, followed by compressed hydrogen and liquid hydrogen storage. The levelised cost of the refuelling station was reported to be about $1.5–$8/kg H 2 , depending on the station's capacity and country. Using portable refuelling stations were identified as a promising option in many countries for small fleet size low-to-medium duty vehicles. With the rapidly evolving geo-political landscape and unceasing advancements in technology, sustainable energy security is a very important topic. Research indicates that electrochemical energy systems are quite promising to solve many of energy conversion, storage, and conservation challenges while offering high efficiencies and low pollution. The paper provides an overview of electrochemical energy devices and the various optimization techniques used to evaluate them. The optimization techniques include linear regression, factorial design, the Taguchi method, artificial neural networks, filters, and a combination of such methods to improve these systems. To support the growing interest in research, the bulk of this study focuses on a review of the most promising and highly researched electrochemical energy devices, such as fuel cells, batteries, and supercapacitors. The paper also provides modest commentary on hydrogen production technologies, electrochemical reactors, and membrane separation technologies, amongst other technologies. Building on a previous paper by the authors of this paper on artificial intelligence in hybrid renewable energy systems with fuel cells, this work provides a comparative review of optimization techniques for supercapacitors by highlighting key findings based on model accuracy. A summary of the advantages and disadvantages of the different major optimization techniques is presented. The paper concludes that a combination of optimization techniques is used to overcome the drawbacks of individual techniques, with adaptive filters being the most widely studied. An alkaline electrolyzer is a traditional equipment to generate hydrogen. Improving the yield of electrolyzers has recently captured much attention. In this regard, the utilization of carbon-coated nanomaterial structures is a state-of-art method. On the other hand, considering the current crisis of fossil energies, the exploitation of renewables and green technologies is necessary and unavoidable. Additionally, the design and development of integrated energy systems with two or more output products and the maximum usage of thermal losses to enhance productivity can increase the flexibility and acceptability of the energy system. In this regard, the current paper develops a framework for the performance of a new solar and biomass energies-driven multigeneration system (MGS). The main units installed in MGS are three electric energy generation units based on a gas turbine process, a solid oxide fuel cell unit (SOFCU) and an organic Rankine cycle unit (ORCU), a biomass energy conversion unit to useful thermal energy, a seawater conversion unit into useable freshwater, a unit for converting water and electricity into hydrogen energy and oxygen gas via a nanomaterial-based alkaline electrolyzer, a unit for converting solar energy into useful thermal energy (based on Fresnel collector), and a cooling load generation unit. The planned MGS has a novel structure and layout that has not been considered by researchers in previous papers. The current article is based on presenting a multi-aspect evaluation in order to investigate thermodynamic-conceptual, environmental and exergoeconomic analyzes. The outcomes indicated that the planned MGS can produce about 6.31 MW of electrical power and 0.49 MW of thermal power. Furthermore, MGS is able to produce various products such as potable water (∼0.977 kg/s), cooling load (∼0.16 MW), hydrogen energy (∼1.578 g/s) and sanitary water (∼0.957 kg/s). The overall energy and exergy productivities were measured as 78.13% and 47.72%, respectively. Also, the total investment and unit exergy costs were 47.16 USD per hour and 11.07 USD per GJ, respectively. Further, the content of carbon dioxide released from the planned system was equal to 10.59 kmol per MWh. The number of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) in circulation has undergone a significant increase in recent years. This trend is foreseen to be stronger in the near future. In correlation with the FCEVs market increase, the hydrogen delivery infrastructure must be developed. With this aim, many countries have announced ambitious projects. For example, Spain has the objective of increasing the number of Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS) with public access from three units in operation currently to about 150 by 2030. HRSs are complex systems with high variability in terms of layout design, size of components, operational strategy, hydrogen generation method or hydrogen generation location. This paper is focused on on-site HRS with electrolysis-based hydrogen production, which provides interesting advantages when renewable energy is utilized compared to off-site hydrogen production despite their complexity. To optimize HRS design and operation, a simulation model must be implemented. This paper describes a generic on-site HRS with electrolysis-based hydrogen production, a cascaded multi-tank storage system with multiple compressors, renewable energy sources, and multiple types of dispensing formats. A modelling approach of the layout is presented and tested with real-based parameters of an HRS currently under development, which is capable of producing 11.34 kg/h of green H 2 with irradiation at 1000 W/m2. For the operation, an operational strategy is proposed. The modelled system is tested through several simulations. A sensitivity analysis of the effects of hydrogen demand and day-ahead hydrogen production objective on emissions, demand satisfaction and variable costs is performed. Simulation results show how the operational strategy has achieved service up to 310 FCEVs refuelling events of heavy duty and light duty FCEVs, bringing the total H 2 sold up to almost 7200 H2kg in one month of winter. Additionally, considering variable costs of the energy from the utility grid, the model shows a profit in the range of 21–50 k€ for a daily demand of 60 H2kg/day and 100 H2kg/day, respectively. Shifting from fossil fuels to clean alternative fuel options such as hydrogen is an essential step in decarbonising the road freight transport sector and facilitating an efficient transition towards zero-emissions goods distribution of the future. Designing an economically viable and competitive Hydrogen Supply Chain (HSC) to support and accelerate the widespread adoption of hydrogen powered Heavy Goods Vehicles (H 2 -HGVs) is, however, significantly hindered by the lack of the infrastructure required for producing, storing, transporting and distributing the required hydrogen. This paper focuses on a bespoke design of a hydrogen supply chain and distribution network for the long-haul road freight transportation in the UK and develops an improved end-to-end and spatially-explicit optimisation tool to perform scenario analysis and provide important first-hand managerial and policy making insights. The proposed methodology improves over existing grid-based methodologies by incorporating spatially-explicit locations of Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRSs) and allowing further flexibility and accuracy. Another distinctive feature of the method and the analyses carried out in the paper pertains to the inclusion of bulk geographically agnostic, as well as geological underground hydrogen storage options, and reporting on significant cost saving opportunities. Finally, the curve for H 2 -HGVs penetration levels, safety stock period decisions, and the transport mode capacity against hydrogen levelized cost at pump have been generated as important policy making tools to provide decision support and insights into cost, resilience and reliability of the HSC.
