Power conditioning system (PCS), which provides matched pulse energy for the amplifier, is the key subsystem of a giant solid-state laser facility. It consists of many power conditioning modules (PCMs). Some of the catastrophic faults such as capacitor short-circuit, high voltage cable head short-circuit, or high and low voltage busbar short-circuit, might occur when there is high voltage in the PCMs. To analyze these cases, first, the model of a PCM was proposed. Second, three main faults of a PCM were introduced and the models of them were built. Third, a PCM experimental device with ten xenon lamps in parallel was designed and built, and the experimental results verified the effectiveness of the proposed model. In this article, three fault simulation results were analyzed and the security design recommendations were presented, which can provide reference value for the design of such power system. Analysis of breakdown mechanism in gas-insulated trigatron switches is important for the engineering design and function prediction. Based on the gas discharge theory, a physical model was proposed to estimate the breakdown time for gas-insulated trigatron switches. And the model can explain the breakdown in the trigatron switches with two modes of the breakdown mechanism, i.e., fast breakdown mode (FBM) and slow-breakdown mode (SBM). Based on Raether breakdown criterion, this paper discussed the factors affecting on the E-field enhancement. The E-field is composed of the static E-field and the dynamic E-field, which leads to transformation of breakdown mechanism. Working characteristics of a three-electrode trigatron spark gap is discussed in this paper. Breakdown probability is proven to fit a Weibull distribution. For an engineering application, the lower limit of undervoltage ratio depends on breakdown probability, and the upper limit of undervoltage ratio depends on self-breakdown probability. Some characteristics have been determined experimentally, such as the influence of the air pressure and the influence of the undervoltage ratio on spark gap operation. Curve fitting and quasi-data mining are good methods for research on triggering characteristic in the paper. Therefore, a maximum operation range curve and a boundary line of expected delay time could be determined by application requirements, theory calculation, experimental data and curve fitting. On this basis, optimization operation range could be obtained, which represents a preferable performance of breakdown with expected delay time. It may provide guidance for engineering application. A pulsed-power generator using inductive adder technology is proposed for the case of a discharge gap. The merit of this generator is to merge the pulsed-voltage and pulsed-current adders via the dual secondary windings with special circuit. For the nonlinear impedance in any discharge gap, the standalone voltage-pulse and current-pulse can be outputted successively by this generator. The proposed generator is especially useful for the common resolution of implementing pulse discharge at less cost. As an application example, a compact trigger prototype was developed to compatibly use in the gas-insulated and vacuum switches. Experiments achieved good results that the triggered switches showed stable performance and long life. If the basic circuit of this proposed generator is regarded as a pulsed-generating unit, a certain number of such units connected in parallel can be expected to form a general device with generating greater breakdown-voltage and sustained-current pulses for discharge gaps. For a compact and reliable nanosecond-pulse high-voltage generator (NPHVG), the specification parameter selection and potential usage of fast controllable state-solid switches have an important bearing on the optimal design. The NPHVG with closed transformer core and fast switching thyristor (FST) was studied in this paper. According to the analysis of T-type circuit, the expressions for the voltages and currents of the primary and secondary windings on the transformer core of NPHVG were deduced, and the theoretical maximum analysis was performed. For NPHVG, the rise-rate of turn-on current (di/dt) across a FST may exceed its transient rating. Both mean and maximum values of di/dt were determined by the leakage inductances of the transformer, and the difference is 1.57 times. The optimum winding ratio is helpful to getting higher voltage output with lower specification FST, especially when the primary and secondary capacitances have been established. The oscillation period analysis can be effectively used to estimate the equivalent leakage inductance. When the core saturation effect was considered, the maximum di/dt estimated from the oscillating period of the primary current is more accurate than one from the oscillating period of the secondary voltage. Although increasing the leakage inductance of NPHVG can decrease di/dt across FST, it may reduce the output peak voltage of the NPHVG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a high-power laser facility with multiplex power modules, the dispersion of self-breakdown voltages of spark gap switches might result in a so-called pre-fire problem. Pre-fire probability of spark gap switches with graphite electrodes must be constrained at extremely low level. In this paper, Pedersen model was used to explain the causes of pre-fire. The microscopic surface roughness of worn graphite electrodes had a major impact on pre-fire. And this paper had deduced the cumulative probability distribution of pre-fire, and given a relevant Weibull distribution equation. Several typical graphite materials were tested too. The experimental results revealed that electrodes should use graphite with higher hardness, smaller particle size and greater flexural strength. This was consistent with the analysis of Pedersen model. More significantly, based on the experiments of typical graphite materials, two Weibull constants of the cumulative probability distribution of pre-fire were obtained by a graphing method. Therefore, it is possible to calculate, reduce or control the occurrence of pre-fire in a facility with many gas switches. Electrode replacement is an effective method to extend the useful lifetime of the spark gap switch with graphite electrodes. In order to perform electrode replacement, suppressing temperature rise and preventing static welding/erosion should be considered for the static electrical contact interface between the electrode and the holder. In this paper, a mathematical model of contact temperature rise is proposed based on the Holm model and heat-conduction equations. This mathematical model can quantitatively prove that some material properties of the metal holder and some mechanical characteristics of the spark gap switch are key parameters affecting temperature rise. Material properties of the metal holder include thermal conductivity, specific heat, density, electrical resistivity, elasticity modulus, and the Poisson ratio. Mechanical characteristics of the spark gap switch include contact radius/area, contact pressure, and contact surface roughness. Chip-based biosensor arrays for label-free and high-throughput detection were fabricated and tested. The sensor array was composed of a 150-nm-thick, 50-nm-gap, and 600-nm-period gold nanoslits. Each array size was 100 μm×100 μm. A transverse-magnetic polarized wave in these metallic nanostructures generated resonant surface plasmons at a wavelength of about 800 nm in a water environment. Using the resonant wavelength shift in the nanoslit array, we achieved detection sensitivity up to 668 nm per refractive index unit, about 1.7 times larger than that reported on an array of nanoholes. Understanding the mechanism of coalescence-induced self-propelled jumping behavior provides distinct insights in designing and optimizing functional coatings with self-cleaning and anti-icing properties. However, to date self-propelled jumping phenomenon has only been observed and studied on superhydrophobic surfaces, other than those hydrophobic surfaces with weaker but fairish water-repellency, for instance, vulcanized silicon rubber (RTV) coatings. In this work, from the perspective of thermodynamic-based energy balance aspect, the reason that self-propelled jumping phenomenon does not happen on RTV coatings is studied. The apparent contact angles of droplets on RTV coatings can be less than the theoretical critical values therefore cannot promise energy surplus for the coalesced droplets onside. Besides, on RTV and superhydrophobic surfaces, the droplet-size dependent variation characteristics of the energy leftover from the coalescence process are opposite. For the droplets coalescing on RTV coatings, the magnitudes of energy dissipations are more sensitive to the increase in droplet size, compared to that of released surface energy. Superhydrophobic (SH) and superamphiphobic (SAP) coatings have been viewed as an alternative to conventional hydrophobic room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone rubber coatings in anti-pollution flashover application. However, being one of the most important properties in RTV-based anti-flashover materials and devices, the hydrophobicity transfer property was rarely documented for SH and SAP coatings, which restricts their practical applications in environments with heavy contamination. Herein, we propose for the first time a superhydrophobicity transfer effect in superwetting (SW) coatings (e.g., SAP and SH coatings) containing low-surface-energy molecules (e.g., polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)) as a migratory reagent. When the surface is stained by artificial simulated pollutants, PDMS molecules can migrate from the coating to the contamination layer, followed by a surface modification. Through this process, the surface wettability of the contaminant layer gradually evolves from superhydrophilicity to hydrophobicity, and finally to SH state. This evolution is investigated in relation to the amount and species of migratory reagents, migration time, pollution grade, and pollutant species. The superhydrophobicity transfer effect offers the coated glass insulators an outstanding anti-pollution flashover strength. Using micro-nanostructure superhydrophobic coating with the unique self-cleaning phenomenon is a feasible method to further reduce the frequency of insulator pollution flashover. However, the research on the anti-pollution flashover performance of superhydrophobic coating is still insufficient. This paper analyzes the various types of forces on the polluted particles accumulated on the superhydrophobic coating surface, and calculates that the vertical force or the horizontal force on the nano-scale and micro-scale particles is positive when they are in contact with most types of droplets. After being fully wetted, these particles are easily absorbed or pulled by the droplets and leave the coating surface. So it is necessary to establish a new DC pollution flashover mechanism model of superhydrophobic coatings surface from the electric field perspective. Based on this model, the relationship between the pollution flashover voltage and the dry flashover voltage is clarified in the state of extremely small leakage current. Furthermore, the anti-pollution flashover performance experiment was carried out on superhydrophobic coating, RTV coating, and uncoated surface to test the leakage current under different conditions. The experimental results show that at any pollution degree, the leakage current of superhydrophobic coating surface always remains about 16.3μA after being completely wetted. backside-etched silicon chip with a polysilicon diaphragm flip-chip attached on a printed wiring board and globally bumped on a FR4 printed circuit board was investigated through a finite element analysis for determining three key parameters of flip-chip chip size packaging, namely, the size of solder bump, and the thickness of the printed wiring board with/without U8437-3 underfill. Four kinds of thermal-induced stresses and deformations in the diaphragm, solder bump, and printed wiring board were evaluated for the parametric study. As the simulation results show, the thermal-induced stresses in the diaphragm and solder bump can be reduced effectively if the printed wiring board is thinner. However, the printed wiring board is still required to be sufficiently thick to prevent warping. In addition, the underfill material also can reduce the induced stress occurring at the interface between the solder joint and the chip and improve reliability. Interferon alpha (IFN-α) modulates the proliferation of different human tumour cell lines. It has been shown that IFN-α induces the growth inhibition of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL). However, its intracellular signalling mechanisms remain unknown. This study found that IFN-α inhibited the cell proliferation of human T-ALL cell line Jurkat in a dose- and time-dependent manner. A p38 inhibitor (SB203580), but not an extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 inhibitor (PD98059) or c-Jun N-terminal kinase inhibitor (SP600125), eliminated IFN-α inhibition of Jurkat cell proliferation, indicating that p38 pathway is crucial for IFN-α-mediated growth inhibition. SB203580 targeted two p38 isoforms, p38α and p38β. The expression of p38α and p38β mRNA in Jurkat cells was examined by reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction. The kinase activity of p38α and p38β was activated by IFN-α in Jurkat cells. To investigate the role of p38α and p38β isoforms in IFN-α-mediated growth inhibition, we generated stable clones that overexpressed the dominant-negative p38 isoform, p38α(AF) or p38β(AF), in Jurkat cells. Overexpression of p38α(AF) or p38β(AF) inhibited IFN-α-mediated p38 kinase activity and growth inhibition in Jurkat cells. Similarly, down-regulation of either p38α or p38β by isoform-specific small interference RNAs also reduced IFN-α-mediated growth inhibition. Ecosystem carbon stocks were compared in three island mangrove forests, subjected to different anthropogenic stresses, close to Port Klang in Selangor State on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Carbon stocks in living biomass, litter, deadwood and soil were quantified, and the carbon isotopic signature in mangrove soils was also measured, to estimate their carbon source. We hypothesize that carbon stock would be more readily available in undisturbed mangroves. The results indicated that, in general, soil organic carbon pool comprised the majority of the ecosystem carbon stock, while dead organic matter made a negligible contribution. The highest ecosystem carbon stock was measured in the permanent undisturbed mangrove reserve on Pulau Klang. Carbon isotope data revealed that disturbed mangroves in Pulau Ketam had a more enriched δ13C signature of soil samples compared to the other two sites. The soil organic carbon in Pulau Ketam was mostly derived from mangrove materials (92.8%). The results suggested that the organic carbon accumulated in the soils was not only regulated by the burial of mangrove-derived organic carbon, but also the site conditions. • Ecosystem carbon stock in mangrove environment can be influenced by its land use status. • Soil organic carbon in undisturbed mangrove forest can contribute to the majority of the ecosystem carbon stock, regardless of the vegetation stands. • Isotope data revealed that the mangrove leaf and suspended particulate organic matter in the sea water are the sources of soil organic matter. Current tank tests have been performed on two equal-diameter, flexible cylinders in tandem with various end spacings or separation distances. While the cylinders experienced transverse vortex-induced vibration in only the first mode, the test Reynolds numbers were well into the transition range, and the drag crisis was clearly observed on the upstream cylinder. This work addresses the problem of finding boundary points in multidimensional data sets. Boundary points are data points that are located at the margin of densely distributed data such as a cluster. We describe a novel approach called BORDER (a BOundaRy points DEtectoR) to detect such points. BORDER employs the state-of-the-art database technique-the Gorder kNN join and makes use of the special property of the reverse k nearest neighbor (RkNN). New clinical studies suggest that narrowing of the retinal blood vessels may be an early indicator of cardiovascular diseases. One measure to quantify the severity of retinal arteriolar narrowing is the arteriolar-to-venular diameter ratio (AVR). The manual computation of AWL is a tedious process involving repeated measurements of the diameters of all arterioles and venules in the retinal images by human graders. Consistency and reproducibility are concerns. To facilitate large-scale clinical use in the general population, it is essential to have a precise, efficient and automatic system to compute this AVR. This paper describes a new approach to obtain AVR. The starting points of vessels are detected using a matched Gaussian filter. The detected vessels are traced with the help of a combined Kalman filter and Gaussian filter. A modified Gaussian model that takes into account the central light reflection of arterioles is proposed to describe the vessel profile. The width of a vessel is obtained by data fitting. Experimental results indicate a 97.1 % success rate in the identification of vessel starting points, and a 99.2% success rate in the tracking of retinal vessels. The accuracy of the AVR computation is well within the acceptable range of deviation among the human graders, with a mean relative AVR error of 4.4%. This paper reports the formation of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in rf-sputtered defective polycrystalline MgZnO/ZnO heterostructure via the screening of grain boundary potential by polarization-induced charges. As the MgZnO thickness increases, the sheet resistance reduces rapidly and then saturates. The enhancement of the interfacial polarization effect becomes stronger, corresponding to a larger amount of resistance reduction, when the Mg content in the cap layer increases. Monte Carlo method by including grain boundary scattering effect as well as 2D finite-element-method Poisson and drift-diffusion solver is applied to analyze the polycrystalline heterostructure. The experimental and Monte Carlo simulation results show good agreement. From low temperature Hall measurement, the carrier density and mobility are both independent of temperature, indicating the formation of 2DEG with roughness scattering at the MgZnO/ZnO interface. • A 1.46 MJ capacitive pulsed power supply is designed by using the pulse thyristors. • The synchronous triggering of multiple sets of thyristors enables high current output of the pulsed power supply. • The high gate trigger system is developed to control the synchronous conduction of the thyristors of each module. • Simulation and project experience show that the high-probability failure will not affect the other components in the power supply. In order to study the adaptation of the semiconductors for the special power supply application, a capacitive pulsed power supply is designed by using the pulse thyristors. The modular integrated method is adopted to redesign the main circuit of the power supply. The synchronous triggering of multiple sets of thyristors enables high current output of the pulsed power supply, which can avoid excessive current passing through the thyristors and eliminate current-sharing measures of the thyristors. Applying the fast switching MOSFET and magnetic induction of pulse transformer, a set of high gate trigger system is developed to control the synchronous conduction of the thyristors of each module. The simulation and experimental results show that most of the faults occurring during the operation of the pulsed power supply can be limited by protection devices. Practical operation indicates that the pulse power supply can provide specific required pulse current and energy for the pulsed xenon lamp. The design method of the pulsed power supply can provide a reference for the design of the pulsed power supply, and lay a foundation for the higher capacitive energy storage application. Optimal selection of features of Partial Discharge (PD) signals recorded from defects in High Voltage (HV) cables will contribute not only to the improvement of PD pattern recognition accuracy and efficiency but also to PD parameter visualization in HV cable condition monitoring and diagnostics. This paper presents a novel Random Forest (RF)-based feature-selection algorithm for PD pattern recognition of HV cables. The algorithm is applied to feature selection of both PD signals and interference signals with the aim of obtaining the optimal features for data processing. First, the experimental data acquisition and feature extraction processes are introduced. PD signals were captured from faults created in a cable to obtain the raw PD data, and then, a set of 3500 transient PD pulses and a set of 3500 typical interference pulses were extracted, based on which 34 PD features were extracted for further processing. Furthermore, 119 two-dimensional features and 1082 three-dimensional features were generated. The paper then discusses the basic principle of the RF algorithm. Finally, RF-based feature selection was implemented to determine the optimal features for PD pattern recognition. The results were obtained and evaluated with the Back Propagation Neural Network and Support Vector Machine. It is a great challenge to differentiate partial discharge (PD) induced by different types of insulation defects in high-voltage cables. Some types of PD signals have very similar characteristics and are specifically difficult to differentiate, even for the most experienced specialists. To overcome the challenge, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning methodology for PD pattern recognition is presented in this paper. First, PD testing for five types of artificial defects in ethylene-propylene-rubber cables is carried out in high voltage laboratory to generate signals containing PD data. Second, 3500 sets of PD transient pulses are extracted, and then 33 kinds of PD features are established. The third stage applies a CNN to the data; typical CNN architecture and the key factors which affect the CNN-based pattern recognition accuracy are described. Factors discussed include the number of the network layers, convolutional kernel size, activation function, and pooling method. This paper presents a flowchart of the CNN-based PD pattern recognition method and an evaluation with 3500 sets of PD samples. Finally, the CNN-based pattern recognition results are shown and the proposed method is compared with two more traditional analysis methods, i.e., support vector machine (SVM) and back propagation neural network (BPNN). The results show that the proposed CNN method has higher pattern recognition accuracy than SVM and BPNN, and that the novel method is especially effective for PD type recognition in cases of signals of high similarity, which is applicable for industrial applications. Background: Alternating wet and dry seasons may play an important role in the acquisition and distribution of Blastocystis subtype infection in the tropics. This cross-sectional study was therefore conducted to provide the prevalence of Blastocystis and to determine the potential risk factors associated with each subtype during the wet and dry seasons in the Aboriginal community, Pahang, Malaysia. Methods: A total of 473 faecal samples were collected: 256 (54.1%) and 217 (45.9%) samples were obtained during the wet (October-November 2014) and the dry season (June 2015), respectively. All fresh faecal samples were subjected to molecular analysis for subtype and allele identification. Results: Of the 473 samples, 42.6% and 37.8% were positive for Blastocystis ST1, ST2, ST3 and ST4 during wet and dry seasons, respectively. Prevalence of Blastocystis ST1 was significantly higher during the wet season compared to the dry season (Z = 2.146, P < 0.05). Analysis of the association of each Blastocystis subtype with socioeconomic characteristics showed the presence of other family members infected with Blastocystis ST3 and the use of stored river water for domestic activities were the significant risk factors for Blastocystis ST3 infections during both seasons. Untreated water supply and low monthly household income (less or equal to RM 500) were the other significant risk factors for Blastocystis ST3 infections during wet and dry season, respectively. The presence of other family members with Blastocystis ST1 and ST2 was the only significant risk factor associated with ST1 and ST2 infections during both seasons. We hypothesise that transmission of Blastocystis ST1, ST2 and ST3 occurred from person to person during both seasons. The waterborne transmission was also identified as a mode of transmission of Blastocystis ST3. Conclusion: The significant risk factors identified in this study were important in the dynamic transmission of Blastocystis infections during both seasons. Large size (~2 cm) single crystals of layered MoTe2 in both 2 H- and 1 T ′-types were synthsized using TeBr4 as the source of Br2 transport agent in chemical vapor transport growth. The crystal structures of the as-grown single crystals were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and electrical resistivity (ρ) measurements. The resistivity ρ( T ), magnetic susceptibility χ( T ), and heat capacity C p( T ) measurement results reveal a first order structural phase transition near ~240 K for 1 T ′-MoTe2, which has been identified to be the orthorhombic T d-phase of MoTe2 as a candidate of Weyl semimetal. The STM study revealed different local defect geometries found on the surface of 2H - and T d-types of MoTe6 units in trigonal prismatic and distorted octahedral coordination, respectively. Background: Most senior veterans who live in veterans' homes in Taiwan are single and have few intimate, interpersonal relationships. Aging is often accompanied by solitude and illness, which causes senior veterans to doubt the meaning of life and to lose confidence in the value of life. Purpose: This study investigated the personal characteristics that influence interpersonal intimacy and the meaning of life as well as the relationship between interpersonal intimacy and the meaning of life among senior veterans living in veterans' homes. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used, and 120 senior male veterans were convenience sampled from three veterans' homes in southern Taiwan. Three structured questionnaires were used in this study: personal characteristics questionnaire, interpersonal intimacy scale, and purpose in life test. Results: (a) Interpersonal intimacy was influenced by source of income or funds, type of residence institution, religious affiliation, and the quality of the participant's relationships with family, friends, and fellow residents. Educational level and self-perceived health status correlated positively with interpersonal intimacy, and period of residence correlated negatively with interpersonal intimacy. (b) Meaning of life was influenced by the quality of relationships with family and friends. Educational level and self-perceived health status correlated significantly and positively with meaning of life, and period of residence correlated negatively with meaning of life. In the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve (MMFR), the role of microzooplankton (20–200 μm) grazing on phytoplankton as a channel for carbon transfer to higher trophic levels was investigated. Our results showed that primary production was higher during the southwest monsoon (SWM) (1905 ± 1478 μgCl−1d−1) than in the northeast monsoon (NEM) (708 ± 474 μgCl−1d−1). Microzooplankton grazing was tightly coupled to primary production in both SWM and NEM, accounting for 97% and 68% of primary production, respectively. Both primary production (activation energy: 1.29 ± 0.54 eV) and microzooplankton grazing (2.05 ± 0.63 eV) showed temperature dependency, and revealed a shift towards heterotrophy with seawater warming, specifically at temperatures above 32 °C. As a conclusion, the microbial food web in MMFR is characterised by high primary production that was efficiently grazed by microzooplankton. • Relative to other tropical mangrove forests, primary production in the mangrove estuary of Matang was high. • Microzooplankton grazing was tightly coupled to primary production. • There were monsoonal differences in the classical food chain but not in the microbial loop. Cleanliness and desiccative are necessary for outdoor insulation surfaces to maintain the voltage withstand capability especially in humid and polluted operation conditions. Once the voltage withstanding capability of insulation coatings is reduced by contaminant electrolyte, flashover accidents would be easier to happen, causing tremendous economy and energy losses. Superhydrophobic coatings, due to their self-cleaning property, are deemed to have great application potential in maintaining outdoor insulation performance, especially in humid and polluted environments. The water patterns on superhydrophobic coating in humid and polluted conditions are obviously different from those on traditional insulation coatings. Flashover voltage is one of the indices for quantifying insulation strength, while to date it is still unclear whether the commonly-used flashover voltage prediction models based on Obenaus's theory are still suitable to be applied in the cases with superhydrophobic surface. Here we proposed a facile and low-cost preparation method of superhydrophobic coating. By analyzing the specific surface condition under humid and polluted conditions, and considering the development of arc path, a novel theoretical model for predicting flashover voltage of superhydrophobic coatings is established from the perspective of electric field. The flashover voltage of the synthesized coating as well as Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber coating are tested and compared, for investigating the insulation strength on the synthesized superhydrophobic coating, and verifying the accuracy of the proposed prediction model. It is found the synthesized superhydrophobic coating shows self-cleaning property during the wetting and voltage applying process, the flashover voltage of superhydrophobic coating is higher than that of RTV coating, and is affected less obviously by the change in pollution degree, compared with RTV coating. The established model shows better accuracy in predicting the flashover voltage of superhydrophobic coating than the traditional one, with errors of less than 6%. Based on the proposed model, the flashover voltage of polluted superhydrophobic coating surface is positively and negatively related to the volume and the contact angle of the polluted electrolyte droplet, respectively. By both experimental measurements and theoretical calculations, we investigated the magnetic and electronic properties of Li2Cu(WO4)2 as a tungstate-bridged quasi-one-dimensional (1D) copper spin-(1/2) chain system. Interestingly, magnetic susceptibility χ(T) and specific heat measurements show that the system undergoes a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF)-like ordering at TN ≈ 3.7 K, below a broad χ(T) maximum at ~8.9 K indicating a low-dimensional short-range AF spin correlation. Bonner-Fisher model fitting of χ(T) leads to an AF intrachain exchange constant of J/kB = 15.8 ± 0.1 K, and mean-field theory estimation gives an interchain coupling constant of J⊥/kB = 1.6 K, which supports the quasi-1D nature of this spin system. Theoretical evaluation of exchange coupling constants within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus on-site Coulomb interaction (U) shows that the dominant AF exchange interaction is of ~13.9 K along the a-axis with weak interchain coupling, in agreement with the experimental result of a quasi-1D spin-(1/2) chain system. The GGA+U calculations also predict that Li2Cu(WO4)2 is a charge transfer-type AF semiconductor with a direct band gap of 1.5 eV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-electrode graphite spark gap switch (TGSGS) is used as the main discharge switch and triggered by a reliable trigger generator in pulsed power conditioning system (PPCS). There would be 108 energy modules in PPCS working at the same time. The reliable operating and jitters of the trigger generators will have impact on the PPCSs performance. In this paper, the working modes of the TGSGS are discussed and the performance of trigger generators in PPCS is tested and presented. A protection strategy of the trigger generator in PPCS is introduced, and effect of the blocking capacitor on the trigger pulse transmission is analyzed and tested. The protection strategy of the trigger generator based on blocking capacitor and fuse can effectively prevent the energy anti-irrigation failure when the pulse transformer core saturated. The blocking capacitor has some effect on the trigger pulse transmission, and has the larger capacitance, getting the higher peak amplitude on the cathode of the TGSGS. It is tried to discuss the working characteristics of the thyristors, and proposes a selection reference of the thyristors in this and other similar applications. We investigate the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and related chiral transport in the millimetersize (Cr0.12Bi0.26Sb0.62 )2Te3 films. With high sample quality and robust magnetism at low temperatures, the quantized Hall conductance of e2/h is found to persist even when the film thickness is beyond the two-dimensional (2D) hybridization limit. Meanwhile, the Chem insulator-featured chiral edge conduction is manifested by the nonlocal transport measurements. In contrast to the 2D hybridized thin film, an additional weakly field-dependent longitudinal resistance is observed in the ten-quintuple-layer film, suggesting the influence of the film thickness on the dissipative edge channel in the QAHE regime. The extension of the QAHE into the three-dimensional thickness region addresses the universality of this quantum transport phenomenon and motivates the exploration of new QAHE phases with tunable Chem numbers. In addition, the observation of scale-invariant dissipationless chiral propagation on a macroscopic scale makes a major stride towards ideal low-power interconnect applications. Fe-based nanocrystalline (FE-N) cores are widely used in pulsed-power and power electronic systems. In this paper, FE-N cores with high and low residual flux were tested and compared under single impulses. The loss density and permeability of the two FE-N types are evaluated in the usable flux swing range of \(\sim 0.0\) –1.4 T, and a range of magnetization rates of \(\sim 1.0~\mu \) s–6.0 T/ \(\mu \) s. When the loss density and average relative permeability are evaluated for magnetization from initial point to positive saturation based on the initial magnetization curves, the FE-N with low residual flux has lower loss density and larger average relative permeability than the one with high residual flux under low magnetization rates. The loss density and average relative permeability of the two FE-N types are almost the same values under high magnetization rates. The application of the measured results in magnetic switch design and performance analysis is presented. The presented results of the two FE-N cores can be aided in the practical magnetic designs of magnetic switches, pulse transformers, and inductors, but not restricted to those. BiTeI exhibits large Rashba spin splitting due to its noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. The study of the chemical doping effect is important in order to either tune the Fermi level or refine the crystal quality. Here, we report the magnetotransport measurement in high quality BiTeI single crystals with different copper dopings. We found that a small amount of copper doping improves the crystal quality significantly, which is supported by the transport data showing higher Hall mobility and larger amplitude in Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation at low temperature. Two distinct frequencies in Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation were observed, giving extremal Fermi surface areas of AS=9.1×1012 cm-2 and AL=3.47×1014 cm-2 with corresponding cyclotron masses mS*=0.0353me and mL*=0.178me, respectively. Those results are further compared with relativistic band structure calculations using three reported Te and I positions. Our analysis infers the crucial role of Bi-Te bond length in the observed large bulk Rashba-type spin-splitting effect in BiTeI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses research which examined the interobserver variability in grading transbronchial biopsy specimens for acute rejection after lung transplantation. An international grading system was created to standardize the diagnosis of acute lung-allograft rejection. Findings revealed overall corcordance rates of 74% and 89% for grade A and grade B biopsy specimens. In addition, a higher level of agreement early after transplantation was observed among samples.

Purpose: To assess the correlation and reproducibility of retinal vascular geometric measurements obtained from two stereo-paired fundus images. Methods: Thirty stereoscopic pairs of color optic disc-centered photographs from the Blue Mountains Eye Study were analyzed. Side-by-side grading was performed by a single grader, using semi-automated computer software to quantify the following retinal geometric parameters: (1) retinal arteriolar/venular caliber (CRAE/CRVE); (2) arteriole-to-venule ratio (AVR); (3) branching angle; and (4) tortuosity. We used Pearson correlation (r), intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), and Bland-Altman plots to assess within-pair correlation and reproducibility for each parameter measured. Results: Inter- and intra-grader r and ICC were high (all r > 0.90 and ICC > 0.90), except for branching angle (ICCs between 0.69-0.83). There was no significant difference between within-pair means of all retinal vascular geometric parameters, before and after excluding poor quality images. CRAE, CRVE, AVR, and arteriolar and venular tortuosity showed very high within-pair correlation and agreement (all r > 0.80 and all ICC > 0.90 respectively). Arteriolar and venular branching angles demonstrated moderate within-pair correlation (r = 0.65 and r = 0.62, respectively) and within-pair agreement (ICC = 0.76 and ICC = 0.77, respectively). Conclusions: Use of computer-assisted software to measure retinal vascular geometric parameters from paired fundus images was highly repeatable and is robust to differences in photographic angles of paired stereo images. Abstract: S. aureus bacteremia (SAB) is a severe systemic illness, which is associated with high mortality and healthcare cost. It has been reported that older age per se is a poor prognostic factor of SAB, but little is known whether poor clinical outcomes is related to conservative attitudes of treating physicians. A retrospective cohort of 126 patients (mean age: 73.7±13.6years, 72.2% males) with community-onset SAB during 2004–2008 in a tertiary medical center in Taiwan was obtained for study. Demographic data, clinical characteristics, primary infectious focus, metastatic lesions, access to critical care units, performance of invasive procedures, Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) and in-hospital mortality for all study subjects were collected. The overall in-hospital mortality was 32.5%, which was not significantly different between adult and elderly groups. SAB of elderly patients was more likely to be primary than that of the adult patients (20.4% vs. 3.6%, p =0.043). Deep-seated abscess, osteomyelitis and metastatic lesion with central nervous system (CNS) involvement were more common infection foci in the adult patient group. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cerebrovascular accident were more common underlying conditions of the elderly group. Chances of patients admitted to intensive care unit and employment of invasive procedures were not different between groups although elderly patients were supposed to be of a greater risk of mortality. In conclusion, the overall in-hospital mortality of community-onset SAB was 32.5%, which was not different between age groups. In general, older patients were of similar chance to receive critical care and invasive procedures except arterial line and non-tunneled central venous catheters. Further prospective investigation is needed to clarify whether physicians hold different attitudes to older patients with SAB and the differences in treatment attitude resulting in poorer clinical outcomes. In a high-powered single pulse system, the graphite electrode is better than other common metal electrodes for high energy transfer and pulse discharge. In this paper, the erosion mechanism of graphite electrode is investigated with the thermodynamics theory and the experimental results. Based on a simplified mathematical model, the graphite electrode erosion process of high-powered spark gap switch is also analyzed. The thermoelectric power of a material, typically governed by its band structure and cartier density, can be varied by chemical doping that is often restricted by solubility of the dopant. Materials showing large thermoelectric power are useful for many industrial applications, such as the heat-to-electricity conversion and the thermoelectric cooling device. Here we show a full electric-field tuning of thermoelectric power in a dual-gated bilayer graphene device resulting from the opening of a band gap by applying a perpendicular electric field on bilayer graphene. We uncover a large enhancement in thermoelectric power at a low temperature, which may open up a new possibility in low temperature thermoelectric application using graphene-based device. To examine the relationship between selected developmental assets and health-promoting behaviours of adolescents. Developmental assets can be considered as potential health assets for adolescents. Understanding the relationship between developmental assets and health-promoting behaviours among adolescents could provide nurses with a new approach to design intervention programmes for adolescent health-promoting behaviours. A cross-sectional study design. Anonymous questionnaires were administered to 453 adolescents aged between 13-16 years. Canonical correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between selected developmental assets and health-promoting behaviours. Canonical correlation analysis indicated two significantly meaningful variate pairs between selected developmental assets and health-promoting behaviour sets. The first pair variate accounted for 51·3% of the total variance, which showed that adolescents who had better self-esteem, future aspirations, responsible choices, family communication, non-parental adult role models, peer role models and community involvement had better behaviours of life appreciation, health responsibility, social support, stress management, nutrition and exercise. The second pair variate accounted for 9·6% of the total variance, which showed that adolescents who had better responsible choices had better stress management behaviours. Developmental assets are important to adolescents' health-promoting behaviours. Interventions focusing on strengthening developmental assets can potentially provide an innovative approach for nurses to improve health-promoting behaviours of adolescents. Strengthening developmental assets can potentially improve the health-promoting behaviours of adolescents. Individual and sociopolitical domains should be incorporated into programmes for enhancement of developmental assets. School nurses can cooperate with family and community and provide environments improving adolescents' developmental assets. The application of the superhydrophobic coating is expected to be an effective method to further improve the pollution flashover voltage of insulators. However, so far, the relationship between electric field strength, droplet volume, and sliding angle in strong electric fields is not clear. This is not conducive to the evaluation of the practical application effect of superhydrophobic insulators. In this paper, the self-cleaning property of superhydrophobic coating and the critical motion condition of droplets in the electric field were analyzed theoretically. Then an experimental platform was set up to observe the movement of the droplet driven by the electric field, and the critical electric field strength for droplet motion was measured. Experimental and theoretical analysis results show that the critical electric field strength for positive droplet motion is less than that for the negative droplet. The droplet driven by the electric field can also remove water-insoluble pollution particles. And the maximum pollution concentration that droplets can remove by means of self-cleaning performance is calculated theoretically. The theoretical calculation method of the sliding angle of superhydrophobic coating in uniform DC electric field is obtained, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. Glutamate clearance by astrocytes is critical for controlling excitatory neurotransmission and ATP is an important mediator for neuron-astrocyte interaction. However, the effect of ATP on glutamate clearance has never been examined. Here we report that treatment of RBA-2 cells, a type-2-like astrocyte cell line, with ATP and the P2X7 receptor selective agonist 3′-O-(4-benzoylbenzoyl) adenosine 5′-triphosphate (BzATP) decreased the Na+-dependent [3H]glutamate uptake within minutes. Mechanistic studies revealed that the decreases were augmented by removal of extracellular Mg2+ or Ca2+, and was restored by P2X7 selective antagonist , periodate-oxidized 2′,3′-dialdehyde ATP (oATP), indicating that the decreases were mediated through P2X7 receptors. Furthermore, stimulation of P2X7 receptors for 2 h inhibited both activity and protein expression of glutamine synthetase (GS), and oATP abolished the inhibition. In addition, removal of extracellular Ca2+ and inhibition of protein kinase C (PKC) restored the ATP-decreased GS expression but failed to restore the P2X7-decreased [3H]glutamate uptake. Therefore, P2X7-mediated intracellular signals play a role in the down-regulation of GS activity/expression. Activation of P2X7 receptors stimulated increases in intracellular Na+ concentration ([Na+]i) suggesting that the P2X7-induced increases in [Na+]i may affect the local Na+ gradient and decrease the Na+-dependent [3H]glutamate uptake. These findings demonstrate that the P2X7-mediated decreases in glutamate uptake and glutamine synthesis were mediated through distinct mechanisms in these cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Achieving the full potential of zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs) for genome engineering in human cells requires their efficient delivery to the relevant cell types. Here we exploited the infectivity of integrase-defective lentiviral vectors (IDLV) to express ZFNs and provide the template DNA for gene correction in different cell types. IDLV-mediated delivery supported high rates (13–39%) of editing at the IL-2 receptor common γ-chain gene (IL2RG) across different cell types. IDLVs also mediated site-specific gene addition by a process that required ZFN cleavage and homologous template DNA, thus establishing a platform that can target the insertion of transgenes into a predetermined genomic site. Using IDLV delivery and ZFNs targeting distinct loci, we observed high levels of gene addition (up to 50%) in a panel of human cell lines, as well as human embryonic stem cells (5%), allowing rapid, selection-free isolation of clonogenic cells with the desired genetic modification. Genome editing driven by zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs) yields high gene-modification efficiencies (>10%) by introducing a recombinogenic double-strand break into the targeted gene. The cleavage event is induced using two custom-designed ZFNs that heterodimerize upon binding DNA to form a catalytically active nuclease complex. Using the current ZFN architecture, however, cleavage-competent homodimers may also form that can limit safety or efficacy via off-target cleavage. Here we develop an improved ZFN architecture that eliminates this problem. Using structure-based design, we engineer two variant ZFNs that efficiently cleave DNA only when paired as a heterodimer. These ZFNs modify a native endogenous locus as efficiently as the parental architecture, but with a >40-fold reduction in homodimer function and much lower levels of genome-wide cleavage.
