Different body weight-supported gait-training strategies are available for improving ambulation in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). These include body weight-supported overground training (BWSOGT), body weight-supported treadmill training (BWSTT), and robot-assisted gait training (RAGT). We conducted a network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the effect and priority of each training protocol. We searched the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Embase databases from inception to 6 August 2022. The eligibility criteria were as follows: (1) being RCTs, (2) recruiting participants with SCI diagnosis and requiring gait training, (3) comparing different body weight-supported gait training strategies, and (4) involving ambulatory assessments. We conducted a network meta-analysis to compare different training strategies using the standard mean difference and its 95% credible interval. To rank the efficacy of training strategies, we used the P score as an indicator. Inconsistency in network meta-analysis was evaluated using loop-specific heterogeneity. We included 15 RCTs in this analysis. RAGT was had significantly more favourable performance than had the control intervention. The ranking probabilities indicated that the most effective approach was RAGT, followed by BWSOGT, BWSTT, and the control intervention. Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) were both demonstrated to have therapeutic potentials to rapidly induce neuroplastic effects in various rehabilitation training regimens. Recently, we developed a novel transcranial electrostimulation device that can flexibly output an electrical current with combined tDCS and iTBS waveforms. However, limited studies have determined the therapeutic effects of this special waveform combination on clinical rehabilitation. Herein, we investigated brain stimulation effects of tDCS-iTBS on upper-limb motor function in chronic stroke patients.Methods: Twenty-four subjects with a chronic stroke were randomly assigned to a real non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS; who received the real tDCS + iTBS output) group or a sham NIBS (who received sham tDCS + iTBS output) group. All subjects underwent 18 treatment sessions of 1 h of a conventional rehabilitation program (3 days a week for 6 weeks), where a 20-min NIBS intervention was simultaneously applied during conventional rehabilitation. Outcome measures were assessed before and immediately after the intervention period: Fugl-Meyer Assessment-Upper Extremity (FMA-UE), Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTT), and Finger-to-Nose Test (FNT).Results: Both groups showed improvements in FMA-UE, JTT, and FNT scores after the 6-week rehabilitation program. Notably, the real NIBS group had greater improvements in the JTT (p = 0. 016) and FNT (p = 0. 037) scores than the sham NIBS group, as determined by the Mann-Whitney rank-sum test.Conclusions: Patients who underwent the combined ipsilesional tDCS-iTBS stimulation with conventional rehabilitation exhibited greater impacts than did patients who underwent sham stimulation-conventional rehabilitation in statistically significant clinical responses of the total JTT time and FNT after the stroke. Preliminary results of upper-limb functional recovery suggest that tDCS-iTBS combined with a conventional rehabilitation intervention may be a promising strategy to enhance therapeutic benefits in future clinical settings.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04369235. Background: Stroke survivors need continuing exercise intervention to maintain functional status. This study assessed the feasibility and efficacy of an interactive telerehabilitation exergaming system to improve balance in individuals with chronic stroke, compared to conventional one-on-one rehabilitation.Methods: In this prospective case-control pilot study, 30 Taiwanese individuals with chronic stroke were enrolled and randomly allocated to an experimental group and a control group. All participants received intervention 3 times per week for 4 weeks in the study hospital. The experiment group underwent telerehabilitation using a Kinect camera-based interactive telerehabilitation system in an independent room to simulate home environment. In contrast, the control group received conventional one-on-one physiotherapy in a dedicated rehabilitation area. The effectiveness of interactive telerehabilitation in improving balance in stroke survivors was evaluated by comparing outcomes between the two groups. The primary outcome was Berg Balance Scale (BBS) scores. Secondary outcomes were performance of the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, Modified Falls Efficacy Scale, Motricity Index, and Functional Ambulation Category.Results: Comparison of outcomes between experimental and control groups revealed no significant differences between groups at baseline and post-intervention for all outcome measures. However, BBS scores improved significantly in both groups (control group: p = 0.01, effect size = 0.49; experimental group: p = 0.01, effect size = 0.70). Completion times of TUG tests also improved significantly in the experimental group (p = 0.005, effect size = 0.70).Conclusion: The Kinect camera-based interactive telerehabilitation system demonstrates superior or equal efficacy compared to conventional one-on-one physiotherapy for improving balance in individuals with chronic stroke. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a customized interactive video game-based (IVGB) training on balance in older adults with mild-to-moderate Parkinson's disease (PD).Methods: In this 12-week crossover trial, PD patients ≥65 years of age were randomly divided into Group A (a 6-week intervention phase followed by a 6-week control phase) and Group B (a 6-week control phase followed by a 6-week intervention phase). Participants received IVGB exercise training during the intervention phase and no exercise during the control phase. Functional outcomes were measured using behavioral evaluation scales and questionnaires at baseline, week 6 and week 12.Results: Twenty-four PD patients were included in this study, and were evenly divided into two groups. After Bonferroni adjustment, the changes in Modified Falls Efficacy Scale (MFES) and two subscales of Multi-Directional Reach Test were significantly different between two groups in the first 6-week period. In addition, the changes in Berg Balance Scale, MFES, and two subscales of Maximum Step Length were significantly different between two groups in the second 6-week period. Compared to controls, 6-week IVGB exercise intervention significantly improved different but overlapping functional outcomes in two groups of PD patients.Conclusions: The customized IVGB exercise training improves balance, postural stability and confidence in preventing falls in older adults with mild-to-moderate PD. Purpose. This study evaluated the effects of interactive video game-based (IVGB) exercise on balance in diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy. Materials and Methods. Twenty-four patients were randomly assigned to two groups (12 participants per group). Group A received IVGB training for the first 6 weeks, with no exercise in the subsequent 6 weeks. Group B had no exercise for the first 6 weeks and then underwent IVGB training in the subsequent 6 weeks. For all participants, the Modified Falls Efficacy Scale (MFES), Time Up and Go (TUG) test, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Unipedal Stance Test (UST) were employed at weeks 0, 6, and 12 of the experiment. Results. BBS, right-leg UST, and TUG test scores significantly improved after IVGB intervention, whereas MFES and left-leg UST tended to improve after IVGB intervention. Conclusions. This study revealed that 6-week balance-based exercise training using the IVGB system exerted positive effects on functional balance in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Objective To evaluate the feasibility of deep brain stimulation (DBS) and compare the potential of four DBS targets in rats for regulating bladder activity: the periaqueductal gray (PAG), locus coeruleus (LC), rostral pontine reticular nucleus (PnO), and pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPTg). Methods A bipolar stimulating electrode was implanted. The effects of DBS on the inhibition and activation of micturition reflexes were investigated by using isovolumetric intravesical pressure recordings. Results PAG DBS at 2–2.5 V, PnO DBS at 2–2.5 V, and PPTg DBS at 1.75–2.5 V nearly completely inhibited reflexive isovolumetric bladder contractions. By contrast, LC DBS at 1.75 and 2 V slightly augmented reflexive isovolumetric bladder contractions in rats. DBSs on PnO and PPTg at higher intensities (2.5–5 V) demonstrated a higher success rate and larger contraction area evocation in activating bladder contractions in a partially filled bladder. DBS targeting the PPTg was most efficient in suppressing reflexive isovolumetric bladder contractions. Conclusion PPTg DBS demonstrated stable results and high potency for controlling bladder contractions. PPTg might be a promising DBS target for developing new neuromodulatory approaches for the treatment of bladder dysfunctions. PurposeThis study investigated the relationship between peripheral nerve conduction velocity (NCV) and balance performance in older adults with diabetes.MethodsTwenty older adults with diabetes were recruited to evaluate the NCV of their lower limbs and balance performance. The balance assessments comprised the timed up and go (TUG) test, Berg balance scale (BBS), unipedal stance test (UST), multidirectional reach test (MDRT), maximum step length (MSL) test and quiet standing with eyes open and closed. The relationship between NCV and balance performance was evaluated by Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and the balance performances of the diabetic patients with and without peripheral neuropathy were compared by using Mann–WhitneyUtests.ResultsThe NCV in the lower limbs exhibited a moderate to strong correlation with most of the balance tests including the TUG (r = −0.435 to −0.520,p < 0.05), BBS (r = 0.406–0.554,p < 0.05), UST (r = 0.409–0.647,p < 0.05) and MSL (r = 0.399–0.585,P < 0.05). In addition, patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy had a poorer TUG (p < 0.05), BBS (p < 0.01), UST (p < 0.05) and MSL performance (p < 0.05) compared with those without peripheral neuropathy (p < 0.05).ConclusionOur findings revealed that a decline in peripheral nerve conduction in the lower limb is not only an indication of nerve dysfunction, but may also be related to the impairment of balance performance in patients with diabetes. Abstract: Flavonoids are natural compounds derived from plants and some of them have been shown to inhibit osteoclast formation, implicating their potential use for the treatment of osteoporosis. Conventionally, the screening of antiosteoclastic agents is a tedious process that requires visual counting of the number of osteoclasts produced. The purpose of this study was to establish an easier and faster method for screening the antiosteoclastogenic flavonoids by using an enzyme assay. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) is a marker enzyme of the osteoclast. Results obtained demonstrated that cellular TRAP activity tended to correlate with the number of osteoclasts formed. However, the secreted TRAP activity was actually responsible for the resorption activities of the functional osteoclasts. Consequently, the effectiveness of antiosteoclastogenic agents was screened for by assessing their inhibition on receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced TRAP secretion. The half-inhibitory concentrations of flavonoids on TRAP secretion were employed as indices to compare the effectiveness of various flavonoids. The effective flavonoids also exhibited similar inhibitory potencies in the pit-formation analysis. This protocol provides a rapid analysis to screen for effective antiosteoclastogenic agents. Previous study demonstrated that unilateral electrical stimulation of the proximal transected sensory pudental nerve during distention-evoked voiding contractions significantly improved voiding efficiency. The current study extends previous study from unilateral (UniES) to bilateral (BiES) stimulation of pudental afferent nerve fibres to determine whether this approach further enhances the improved voiding efficiency (VE) that we reported previously which unilateral stimulation. The limited source of healthy primary chondrocytes restricts the clinical application of tissue engineering for cartilage repair. Therefore, method to maintain or restore the chondrocyte phenotype during in vitro expansion is essential. The objective of this study is to establish the beneficial effect of ECM molecules on restoring the re-expression of cartilaginous markers in primary human chondrocytes after extensive monolayer expansion. During the course of chondrocyte serial expansion, COL2A1, SOX9, and AGN mRNA expression levels, and GAG accumulation level were reduced significantly in serially passaged cells. Exogenous type II collagen dose-dependently elevated GAG level and induced the re-expression of cartilaginous marker mRNAs in P7 chondrocytes. Chondroitin sulfate did not show significant effect on P7 chondrocytes, while hyaluronic acid inhibited the expression of SOX9 and AGN mRNAs. Upon treatment with type II collagen, FAK, ERK1/2, and JNK were activated via phosphorylation in P7 chondrocytes within 15 min. Furthermore, GFOGER integrin blocking peptide, MEK inhibitor and JNK inhibitor, not p38 inhibitor, significantly reduced the type II collagen-induced GAG deposition level. Finally, in the presence of TGF-β1 and IGF-I, P7 chondrocytes cultured in 3D type II collagen matrix exhibited better cartilaginous features than those cells cultured in the type I collagen matrix. In conclusion, type II collagen alone can effectively restore cartilaginous features of expanded P7 human chondrocytes. It is probably mediated via the activation of FAK-ERK1/2 and FAK-JNK signaling pathways. Abstract: The effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on the differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were investigated in this study. hMSCs were subjected to LIPUS with or without dexamethasone/transforming growth factor-β1 (TD) or bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and the effects of this treatment were assessed. TD-treated hMSCs exhibited characteristic chondrogenic morphology and increased messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of chondrogenic markers and LIPUS enhanced the chondrogenic differentiation of hMSCs treated with TD. The expression of Runx2, an osteogenic transcription factor was not altered in either TD treatment group; however, a significant increase was detected in the LIPUS only group. The osteogenic appearance exhibited 3 days after LIPUS and/or BMP-2 treatment. Increases in the mRNA expression levels of osteogenic markers, Runx2 and ALP were also detected. There was no additive or altered effect with combined LIPUS and BMP-2 treatment. LIPUS alone can increase osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs and LIPUS enhances TD-mediated chondrogenic differentiation of hMSCs. Abstract: This study investigates the temperature-dependent memory characteristics of polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistors with oxide/nitride/oxide stack gate dielectrics and N+ poly-Si gate structures for nonvolatile memory application. As the device was programmed by Fowler–Nordheim tunneling at high temperature, some electrons captured in shallow traps could obtain enough thermal energy to de-trap to the gate, resulting in low programming efficiency. As the programming time increases, the hole injection through the blocking oxide from the gate would further lead the threshold voltage to decrease. In addition, the retention characteristic of the device programmed at higher temperature exhibits better charge storage ability. Because the electrons trapped in the shallow traps of the nitride layer can be easily de-trapped when temperature rises, the memory characteristics are mainly dominated by charges stored in the deep traps. Abstract: In this work, we study a polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistor (poly-Si TFT) combined with a silicon–oxide–nitride–oxide–silicon (SONOS) stack gate dielectric and nanowire channels structure for the applications of transistor and nonvolatile memory. The proposed device named with NW SONOS-TFT has superior electrical characteristics of transistor and also can exhibit high program/erase (P/E) efficiency under adequate bias operation. The V th decreases from 2.45 V to 1.76 V and subthreshold swing reduces from 0.57 V/decade to 0.42 V/decade. The programming V th shift is improved from 2.2 V to 3.3 V at 14 V for 1 s and the erasing V th shift is improved from −0.3 V to −1.3 V at −14 V for 1 s. The dramatic improvement can be attributed to the tri-gate structure and corner effect. In addition, the memory device has a promising data retention behavior at 85 °C and a 0.8 V memory window after 5×103 P/E cycles operations. Abstract: This work presents a method to enhance the performance of polycrystalline silicon thin film transistors (poly-Si TFTs) by using an oxide–nitride–oxide (ONO) gate dielectric and the multiple nanowire channels structure. Experimental results indicate that the performance of the device was enhanced by using the ONO multilayer, because the ONO gate dielectric constant is increased compared to the conventional oxide gate dielectric. Additionally, the TFTs with a ten nanowire channel structure (NW-TFTs) have superior electrical characteristics compared to other TFTs. Abstract: This aim of this study is to provide quantitative analyses of asymmetrical movements between affected and unaffected limbs for hemiparetic subjects in a cycling ergometer. To acquire kinesiological and kinematical data, electromyography (EMG) of quadriceps muscles in the both legs as well as crank positions under three cycling workloads were recorded. The symmetry index (SI) was designed to measure the similarity between muscle activities recorded from affected and unaffected limbs. Using kinematical information of the crank position, the cycling unsmoothness (denoted as roughness index, RI) can be derived from the curvature of the instantaneous cycling speed. Thirteen hemiparetic subjects following a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and eight able-bodied subjects participated in this study. With total symmetry at SI=1, the average SIs of hemiparetic subjects (0.66±0.18) were significantly lower (p &#60;0.01) than those of normal subjects (0.91±0.08) but no significant difference found among three workloads. From the average RI, subjects with hemiparesis exhibited less smooth cycling movements compared to normal group (p &#60;0.01). Non-parametric Friedman and Wilcoxon tests of RIs further indicated that the workload factors are significantly different only for hemiparetic group (p &#60;0.01). No significant difference between lower workloads in RIs showed that the CVA subjects’ sound side alone can execute most of the cycling load with minimal involvement of the affected side under lower workload condition. When cycling at a heavier load, however, it is essential to force the affected limb to assist in the pedaling, thus accomplishing an effective cycling exercise. By combining these two quantitative indices, we can observe the kinesiological measurement of the symmetry of EMG phasic activities from SI and the kinematical cycling smoothness in a coordinated movement from RI, which could provide a clinical guideline for cycling exercises for hemiparetic subjects. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (HD-tACS) to the left primary motor cortex (M1) in the treatment of fibromyalgia (FM) patients. Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial, patients with FM were recruited in a teaching hospital. Thirty-eight patients were randomized to active HD-tACS (n = 19) or sham stimulation (n = 19). Active stimulation included a daily session of 20-min stimulation of 1 mA HD-tACS over the left M1 for ten sessions in two weeks. The primary outcome was the change in pain intensity and quality of life, assessed using the numeric rating scale (NRS) and the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ) at baseline and after two weeks of treatment. Secondary outcomes included other core symptoms of FM (psychological distress, sleep quality, hyperalgesia measured by pressure pain threshold) and changes in biomarkers' total Tau and Aβ1-42. All analyses were based on intention-to-treat for a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Of the 38 randomized patients, 35 completed the study. After two weeks, HD-tACS induced a significant reduction in FIQ score post-treatment. However, there were no significant differences in NRS and FIQ scores compared to sham stimulation. Most adverse events were mild in severity. Nevertheless, one patient receiving HD-tACS attempted suicide during the trial. Conclusions: These results suggest that HD-tACS may effectively reduce pain, psychological distress, and symptom impacts in FM patients. Abstract: In this study, we proposed the low temperature (150 °C) oxygen (O2) and ozone (O3) treatments with a high pressure of 68 atm to improve the quality of sputtered hafnium-oxide (HfOx) thin-film dielectric. XPS results indicate that the binding energy of Hf-O became stronger and traps in dielectric film could be effectively passivated after the O2 and O3 treatments. The accumulation capacitance for the as-deposited HfOx sample can be improved from 261 pF to 303 pF and 366 pF for the O2 and O3 treated samples, respectively. The O3 treated sample also exhibits the negligible hysteresis phenomenon and slight flatband voltage shift. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this work, we studied a pi-shape gate polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistor (poly-Si TFT) with silicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon (SONOS) layers and nanowire channels for the application of electric driver and nonvolatile memory. The proposed pi-gate TFT-SONOS has superior transfer characteristics and its output characteristic also exhibits the high driving current and the suppression of the kink effect. For memory application, the device can provide high program/erase efficiency and large threshold voltage shift under adequate bias operation. A silicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon type polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistor (poly-Si TFT) with nanowire channels was investigated for both transistor and memory applications. The poly-Si TFT memory device has superior electrical characteristics, such as higher drain current, smaller threshold voltage, and steeper subthreshold slope. Also, the simulation result on electrical field reveals that the electrical field across the tunnel oxide is enhanced and that across the blocking oxide is reduced at the corner regions. This will lead to the parasitic gate injection activity and the erasing speed can be apparently improved in the memory device due to the pronounced corner effect and narrow channel width. In this work, the authors study a polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistor (poly-Si TFT) with oxide/nitride/oxide (ONO) stack gate dielectrics and multiple nanowire channels for the applications of both nonvolatile silicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon (SONOS) memory and switch transistor. The proposed device named as nanowire SONOS-TFT has superior electrical characteristics of a transistor such as on/off current ratio, threshold voltage (Vth), and subthreshold slope due to the good gate control ability originated from fringing electrical field effects. Background/Purpose. Few studies have investigated the effects of changing the amplitude of dorsal genital nerve stimulation (GNS) on the inhibition of neurogenic detrusor overactivity in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). The present study determined the acute effects of changes in GNS amplitude on bladder capacity gain in individuals with SCI and neurogenic detrusor overactivity. Methods. Cystometry was used to assess the effects of continuous GNS on bladder capacity during bladder filling. The cystometric trials were conducted in a randomized sequence of cystometric fills with continuous GNS at stimulation amplitudes ranging from 1 to 4 times of threshold (T) required to elicit the genitoanal reflex. Results. The bladder capacity increased minimally and maximally by approximately 34% and 77%, respectively, of the baseline bladder capacity at 1.5 T and 3.2 T, respectively. Stimulation amplitude and bladder capacity were significantly correlated (R = 0.55, P = 0.01). Conclusion. This study demonstrates a linear correlation between the stimulation amplitude ranging from 1 to 4T and bladder capacity gain in individuals with SCI in acute GNS experiments. However, GNS amplitude out of the range of 1-4T might not be exactly a linear relationship due to subthreshold or saturation factors. Thus, further research is needed to examine this issue. BACKGROUND: Whether post-stroke spasticity is associated with autonomic status is unclear. The purpose of our study was to determine whether spasticity in post-stroke patients is associated with heart rate variability (HRV), an indicator of sympathetic and parasympathetic regulation. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether HRV is associated with spasticity in post-stroke patients. METHODS: Our cross-sectional observational study included 21 post-stroke patients with varying degrees of knee spasticity. We measured patients' heart rate variability (HRV) during the morning and afternoon of the same day using the modified Ashworth assessment and the pendulum test. The relationship between HRV and the spasticity parameters was evaluated based on the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). RESULTS: The data for the morning measurements showed that the relaxation index negatively correlated with the high frequency (HF) power of HRV (r = -0.47, P < 0.05), and positively correlated with the low frequency (LF) power of HRV (r = 0.47, P < 0.05) and the LF/HF power ratio (r = 0.55, P < 0.05). Similar correlations were observed between the diurnal differences of HRV and the relaxation index. No correlation was observed among the data for the afternoon measurements. CONCLUSIONS: Higher parasympathetic tone and lower sympathetic tone are associated with a higher degree of knee spasticity in post-stroke patients. Abstract: In this study, high-pressure oxygen (O2 and O2 + UV light) technologies were employed to effectively improve the properties of low-temperature-deposited metal oxide dielectric films and interfacial layer. In this work, 13nm HfO2 thin films were deposited by sputtering method at room temperature. Then, the oxygen treatments with a high-pressure of 1500psi at 150°C were performed to replace the conventional high temperature annealing. According to the XPS analyses, integration area of the absorption peaks of O–Hf and O–Hf–Si bonding energies apparently raise and the quantity of oxygen in deposited thin films also increases from XPS measurement. In addition, the leakage current density of standard HfO2 film after O2 and O2 + UV light treatments can be improved from 3.12×10−6 A/cm2 to 6.27×10−7 and 1.3×10−8 A/cm2 at |Vg| = 3V. The proposed low-temperature and high pressure O2 or O2 + UV light treatment for improving high-k dielectric films is applicable for the future flexible electronics. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Purpose. This research proposed an eyeglass-type infrared-based home appliance control system for spinal cord injured (SCI) with tetraplegia. Method. This system is composed of four major components: A headset, an infrared transmitting module, an infrared receiving/signal-processing module, and a main controller, the Intel-8951 microprocessor. This design concept was based on the use of an infrared remote module fastened to the eyeglasses that could allow the convenient control of the input motion on the keys of a remote controller of a home appliance which are all modified with infrared receiving/signal-processing modules. For system evaluation, 12 subjects (4 male, 8 female, 26 – 47 years old were recruited. Six persons without disabilities were in the control group and 6 with SCI with tetraplegia formed the experimental group. Results. The average accuracy of the control group and the experimental group are 88.8 ± 10.6% and 85.9 ± 14.3%, respectively. The average time cost of the control group and the experimental group are 57.2 ± 8.1 sec and 66.6 ± 12.3 sec, respectively. An independent t-test revealed that the differences in the average accuracy and the average time cost of the control group and the experimental group are not significant (p > 0.05). Conclusions. Using the novel home appliance control system not only provided the advantages of convenience, accuracy and sanitation for people with disabilities but it also helped them to live more independently. Electromyographic (EMG) signals are usually acquired using surface electrodes, and they commonly serve as the control sources of myoelectric prosthetic limbs. The use of passive electrodes and amplifiers with adjustable gain is very popular in laboratories for the development of new control strategies. However, active electrodes without conductive jelly are used in most clinical applications of myoelectric hand control. There remains an important question: Are there any differences between using active and passive electrodes in EMG pattern classifications? Autoregressive and cepstral coefficients were used to evaluate recognition rates via both types of electrodes. The results showed that the estimated recognition rates in the passive electrodes were comparable to those in the active ones (averaged recognition rate, 88.5 vs. 85.84% in the autoregressive coefficients, and 84.84 vs. 83.5%, in the cepstral coefficients, respectively). Aside from the lack of significant statistical differences between them, the results imply that the differences between the recognition rates via these electrodes could be negligible. Purpose: This paper describes international actions to collaborate in the assistive technology (AT) arena and provides an update of programmes supporting AT globally. Methods: The World Health Organisation (WHO) identifies the severe global uneven distribution of resources, expertise and extensive unmet need for AT, as well the optimistic substantial capability for innovations and developments in appropriate and sustainable AT design, development and delivery. Systems thinking and market shaping are identified as means to address these challenges and leverage the ingenuity and expertise of AT stakeholders. Results: This paper is a 'call to action', showcasing emerging AT networks as exemplars of a distributed, but integrated mechanism for addressing AT needs globally, and describing the Global Alliance of Assistive Technology Organisations (GAATO) as a vehicle to facilitate this global networking. Conclusion: Partners in this Global Alliance aim to advance the field of assistive technology by promoting shared research, policy advocacy, educating people and organisations within and outside the field, teaching, training and knowledge transfer by pulling together broad-based membership organisations. Collegial, cross discipline and multi-stakeholder collaborations support assistive technology research and practice. Knowledge exchange within and across countries and regions is mutually beneficial. Purpose: To develop a set of quality indicators (QIs) for managing the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health-based disability evaluation system in Taiwan. Method: Using a three-round Delphi exercise, 20 representatives from the social welfare associations for people with disability completed the consensus process. Questionnaire 1 comprised 52 potentially important factors relevant to good services for persons with disabilities in the system. An additional nine items were added to questionnaires 2 and 3. The responders rated the importance of each item using a 5-point Likert scale. The set of QIs for managing the system comprised items that obtained high consensus and a mean score ≥4.5 found in round 3. Results: Those QIs included a composite of measures about a comfortable and barrier-free assessment room, on-site assistance (being important for client access and safety), client's privacy, rights protection, and satisfaction, convenient service, attitude of staff (towards client centeredness), accuracy of report (system effectiveness), and competent staff (system efficiency). Spearman's rho (mean ± standard deviation) of round 3 was 0.79 ± 0.09, and Cronbach's α = 0.90. Conclusions: This set of QIs is suitable for managing the system serving people with disabilities. It is feasible in practice and scientifically acceptable, but further validation is needed. With this study, we were able to develop a set of quality indicators for managing the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health-based disability evaluation system. The core objective of this study was to determine the neuroprotective properties of deep brain stimulation of the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus on the apoptosis of the hippocampus. The pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus is a prime target for Parkinson′s disease and is a crucial component in a feedback loop connected with the hippocampus. Deep brain stimulation was employed as a potential tool to evaluate the neuroprotective properties of hippocampal apoptosis. Deep brain stimulation was applied to the experimental animals for an hour. Henceforth, the activity of Caspase-3, myelin basic protein, Bcl-2, BAX level, lipid peroxidation, interleukin-6 levels, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels were evaluated at hours 1, 3 and 6 and compared with the sham group of animals. Herein, decreased levels of caspases activity and elevated levels of Bcl-2 expressions and inhibited BAX expressions were observed in experimental animals at the aforementioned time intervals. Furthermore, the ratio of Bcl-2/BAX was increased, and interleukin -6, lipid peroxidation levels were not affected by deep brain stimulation in the experimental animals. These affirmative results have explained the neuroprotection rendered by hippocampus apoptosis as a result of deep brain stimulation. Deep brain stimulation is widely used to manage neuro-motor disorders. Nevertheless, this novel study will be a revelation for a better understanding of neuromodulatory management and encourage further research with new dimensions in the field of neuroscience. Pain severity and sleep are associated with cognitive performance in patients with fibromyalgia. This study examined whether sleep mediates the relationships of pain severity with psychomotor vigilance and attention in patients with fibromyalgia by analysing 80 patients with fibromyalgia. Cognitive performance, pain severity and sleep parameters were determined using the Psychomotor Vigilance Task, Brief Pain Inventory–Short Form and sleep diaries of seven consecutive nights, respectively. The patients' demographic data were analysed for potential confounding factors. After adjustment for these confounders, a series of regression analyses was performed to examine the mediating role of sleep. The results indicated that higher pain severity was strongly associated with poorer sustained attention and lower sleep quality, the total effects of pain severity on psychomotor vigilance and attention were significant (c path: β = 0.23, p = 0.04), and pain severity was a significant sleep quality predictor (a path: β = −0.33, p < 0.01). When sleep quality was entered into the regression model (a × b path), the effects of pain severity on psychomotor vigilance and attention became non‐significant (c′ path: β = 0.15, p = 0.20) after adjustment of age, indicating a complete mediating effect of sleep quality in the pain severity–cognitive performance relationship. In conclusion, sleep quality mediates the pain severity–cognitive performance relationship: pain affects sleep quality, which in turn impairs sustained attention. Our findings provide further insight into the processes underlying the relationship between pain and poor cognitive function. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a serious public health issue worldwide with increased mortality as well as severe disabilities and injuries caused by falls and road accidents. Unfortunately, there is no approved therapy for TBIs, and bladder dysfunction is a striking symptom. Accordingly, we attempted to analyze bladder dysfunction and voiding efficiency in rats with a TBI at different time-course intervals. Time-dependent analyses were scheduled from the next day until four weeks after a TBI. Experimental animals were grouped and analyzed under the above conditions. Cystometric measurements were used for this analysis and were further elaborated as external urethral sphincter electromyographic (EUS-EMG) activity and cystometrogram (CMG) measurements. Moreover, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies were conducted to investigate secondary injury progression in TBI rats, and results were compared to normal control (NC) rats. Results of EUS-EMG revealed that the burst period, active period, and silent period in TBI rats were drastically reduced compared to NC rats, but they increased later and reached a stagnant phase. Likewise, in CMG measurements, bladder function, the voided volume, and voiding efficiency decreased immediately after the TBI, and other parameters like the volume threshold, inter-contraction interval, and residual volume drastically increased. Later, those levels changed, and all observed results were compared to NC rats. MRI results revealed the prevalence of cerebral edema and the progression of secondary injury. All of the above-stated results of the experiments were extensively substantiated. Thus, these innovative findings of our study model will surely pave the way for new therapeutic interventions for TBI treatment and prominently highlight their applications in the field of neuroscience in the future. Fall prevention requires a multifaceted approach that should include individual risk assessment and intervention strategies. Exercise interventions may mitigate most risk factors for falls (eg, balance impairment, gait impairment, and muscle weakness). Numerous systematic reviews or meta-analyses have assessed the effectiveness of exercise interventions among people with various types of neurological disorders; however, the evidence obtained has not been synthesized into an overview. Therefore, the present systematic review assessed systematic reviews of exercise intervention for fall prevention among people with neurological disorders. The research sources were the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, PubMed, and Embase. Eligible studies were selected, and data were extracted independently by two reviewers. A total of 15 studies (six systematic reviews and nine meta-analyses) were included. These systematic reviews examined in this study have demonstrated that exercise interventions reduced the number, frequency, and rate of falls among people with neurological disorders, including cognitive impairment, dementia, and Parkinson disease. Furthermore, the current study presented insufficient evidence regarding the effectiveness of exercise interventions for fall prevention among people with stroke, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes mellitus with polyneuropathy. Therefore, additional investigations are necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of exercise for fall prevention among people with multiple sclerosis, stroke, and diabetes mellitus with polyneuropathy. Objective: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major brain injury type commonly caused by traffic accidents, falls, violence, or sports injuries. To obtain mechanistic insights about TBI, experimental animal models such as weight-drop-induced TBI in rats have been developed to mimic closed-head injury in humans. However, the relationship between the mechanical impact level and neurological severity following weight-drop-induced TBI remains uncertain. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the relationship between physical impact and graded severity at various weight-drop heights. Approach: The acceleration, impact force, and displacement during the impact were accurately measured using an accelerometer, a pressure sensor, and a high-speed camera, respectively. In addition, the longitudinal changes in neurological deficits and balance function were investigated at 1, 4, and 7 days post TBI lesion. The inflammatory expression markers tested by Western blot analysis, including glial fibrillary acidic protein, beta-amyloid precursor protein, and bone marrow tyrosine kinase gene in chromosome X, in the frontal cortex, hippocampus, and corpus callosum were investigated at 1 and 7 days post-lesion. Results: Gradations in impact pressure produced progressive degrees of injury severity in the neurological score and balance function. Western blot analysis demonstrated that all inflammatory expression markers were increased at 1 and 7 days post-impact injury when compared to the sham control rats. The severity of neurologic dysfunction and induction in inflammatory markers strongly correlated with the graded mechanical impact levels. Conclusions: We conclude that the weight-drop-induced TBI model can produce graded brain injury and induction of neurobehavioral deficits and may have translational relevance to developing therapeutic strategies for TBI. Background: Long-term, sustained progress is necessary in drop foot rehabilitation. The necessary inconvenient body training movements, the return trips to the hospital and repetitive boring training using functional electrical stimulation (FES) often results in the patient suspending their training. The patient's drop foot rehabilitation will not progress if training is suspended.Objective: A fast spread, highly portable drop foot rehabilitation training device based on the smart phone is presented. This device is combined with a self-made football APP and feedback controlled FES. The drop foot patient can easily engage in long term rehabilitation training that is more convenient and interesting.Methods: An interactive game is established on the smart phone with the Android system using the originally built-in wireless communications. The ankle angle information is detected by an external portable device as the game input signal. The electrical stimulation command to the external device is supplemented with FES stimulation for inadequate ankle efforts.Results: After six-weeks training using six cases, the results indicated that this training device showed significant performance improvement (p< 0.05) in the patient's ankle dorsiflexion strength, ankle dorsiflexion angle, control timing and Timed Up and Go.Conclusions: Preliminary results show that this training device provides significant positive help to drop foot patients. Moreover, this device is based on existing and universally popular mobile processing, which can be rapidly promoted. The responses of clinical cases also show this system is easy to operate, convenient and entertaining. Abnormal upper limb function seriously impacts a patient's daily life. After receiving emergency treatment patient should receive function-rebuilding and recovery training. The objective of this study is to integrate IR-camera, an infrared emitter, with a conventional passive hand skateboard training device for conventional upper limb training and the training process is comprehensively recorded and analyzed. Patients participating in the occupational therapy have a binding band attached to hand skateboard on the table to guide the patient in moving the hand skateboard along the designated path to train the patient's upper limbs. Six people with normal upper limb function participated in the stability test. The device repeatability and test results were verified acceptable. Eight patients with abnormal upper limb function (their upper limb function was damaged due to stroke, MMSE > =27) were trained for 4 weeks. The patient scores in finishing rate and finishing time showed significant improvement. The paired T test results (satisfy p < 0.05 or p < 0.01) between wk-1 and wk-2 are significant. The paired T test results (satisfy p < 0.01) between wk-1 and wk-4 are extremely significant. The new IR-Camera system focuses continuously on the 'Figure of eight' curve. The system is light weight and convenient for stroke in home use. The study applies IR-camera technology to the conventional hand skateboard for upper limb training. The experiments show that the hardware of the proposed device no longer delays in response and can result in obvious clinical advances. The proposed device is verified worthy of promotion. Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the relative efficacy of irradiation using a device containing a far-infrared emitting ceramic powder (cFIR) for the management of chronic myofascial neck pain compared with a control treatment. Design: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study. Participants: The study comprised 48 patients with chronic, myofascial neck pain. Intervention: Patients were randomly assigned to the experimental group or the control (sham-treatment) group. The patients in the experimental group wore a cFIR neck device for 1 week, and the control group wore an inert neck device for 1 week. Main outcome measurement: Quantitative measurements based on a visual analogue scale (VAS) scoring of pain, a sleep quality assessment, pressure-pain threshold (PPT) testing, muscle tone and compliance analysis, and skin temperature analysis were obtained. Results: Both the experimental and control groups demonstrated significant improvement in pain scores. However, no statistically significant difference in the pain scores was observed between the experimental and control groups. Significant decreases in muscle stiffness in the upper regions of the trapezius muscles were reported in the experimental group after 1 week of treatment. Conclusions: Short-term treatment using the cFIR neck device partly reduced muscle stiffness. Although the differences in the VAS and PPT scores for the experimental and control groups were not statistically significant, the improvement in muscle stiffness in the experimental group warrants further investigation of the long-term effects of cFIR treatment for pain management. Objective: Tele-assessment techniques can provide healthcare professionals with easily accessible information regarding patients' clinical progress. Recently, kinematic analysis systems have been used to assess rehabilitative outcomes in stroke patients. Kinematic systems, however, are not compatible with tele-assessment. The objective of our study was to develop a tele-assessment system for acquiring kinematic data of forward reaching movements in stroke patients, with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness, portability, and ease of use. Materials and Methods: We selected four healthy control participants and eight hemiplegic stroke patients for our study. The stroke patients were classified as Brunnstrom stage III, stage IV, or stage V. Our tele-assessment system used two three-axes accelerometers, a potentiometer, a multifunctional data acquisition card, and two computers. A standardized kinematic system was applied simultaneously to validate the measurements recorded by our tele-assessment system during five repetitions of forward reaching movements. Results: The correlation coefficients of the reaching displacement, velocity, and acceleration measurements obtained using our tele-assessment system and the standardized kinematic system were 0.956, 0.896, and 0.727, respectively. Differences in the maximum reaching distance and the maximum reaching velocity of forward reaching movements were observed among the study groups. There were no significant differences in the time required to complete the testing session among the study groups. Conclusions: Our tele-assessment system is valid for the evaluation of upper-extremity reaching ability in stroke patients. Abstract: Mechanism of the light-induced instability for InGaZnO thin film transistors has been investigated in this paper. The obvious ambient dependence under light illumination in vacuum and oxygen illustrates that the gas adsorption/desorption dominate the light-induced instability. Under illumination, the photo-generated holes would react with oxygen ions (O2 −) and restore into oxygen molecules (O2) resulting in an apparent negative threshold voltage (Vt) shift. In order to verify the oxygen adsorption/desorption mechanism, the dark recovery characteristics were performed in vacuum and oxygen ambient follows 1000s light illumination and the fast recovery rate in oxygen ambient indicates that the oxygen molecules could be readsorpted. Furthermore, the instability of the gate bias stress under light illumination was investigated. For positive bias illumination stress (PBIS), the competition of the light-induced oxygen desorption and electron trapping mechanisms caused an unusual negative Vt shift comparing with gate bias stress in dark. On the contrary, the apparent Vt shift under negative bias illumination stress (NBIS) in different environments suggests that the light-induced oxygen adsorption will accelerate the degradation phenomenon. Abstract: This study evaluated the effects of interactive video-game based (IVGB) training on the balance of older adults. The participants of the study included 30 community-living persons over the age of 65. The participants were divided into 2 groups. Group A underwent IVGB training for 6 weeks and received no intervention in the following 6 weeks. Group B received no intervention during the first 6 weeks and then participated in training in the following 6 weeks. After IVGB intervention, both groups showed improved balance based on the results from the following tests: the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Modified Falls Efficacy Scale (MFES), Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and the Sway Velocity (SV) test (assessing bipedal stance center pressure with eyes open and closed). Results from the Sway Area (SA) test (assessing bipedal stance center pressure with eyes open and closed) revealed a significant improvement in Group B after IVGB training. Group A retained some training effects after 6 weeks without IVGB intervention. Additionally, a moderate association emerged between the Xavix measured step system stepping tests and BBS, MFES, Unipedal Stance test, and TUG test measurements. In conclusion, IVGB training improves balance after 6 weeks of implementation, and the beneficial effects partially remain after training is complete. Abstract: This study investigates bipolar resistance switching memory in a fabricated Pt/GaOx/TiN device. Gallium oxide sputtered in ambient Ar shows a change in resistance ratio of two orders of magnitude. The enhancement of resistance ratio is also observed in the gallium oxide layer when deposited in ambient Ar/O2. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis shows that this gallium oxide in ambient Ar/O2 can reduce the number of defects and enhance the stability of switching behavior. An analysis of current transport mechanism in the high resistance state indicates that the larger effective thickness can be attributed to the higher oxygen concentration, and can increase the resistance value of the high resistance state. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an ICF core set for post-stroke disability assessment and verification of bio-psycho-social problems. Method: Using the Delphi method, a consensus process was conducted. In total, 24 multidisciplinary experts from different institutions completed the consensus process. The questionnaire for the study comprised 144 ICF second-level, stroke-relevant categories. A 5-point Likert-type scale was used by participants to weight the impact of each category on activities of daily life after a stroke. Consensus of ratings was assessed with Spearman's rho and semi-interquartile range indices. The core set for post-stroke disability assessment and verification was developed from those categories with a mean score ≥4.0 found in the third round of the Delphi exercise. Results: The core set for post-stroke disability assessment and verification contained 51 categories. Of these, 18 categories were from the component body functions, one from body structures, 22 from activities and participation, and 10 from environmental factors. The mean (standard deviation) Spearman's rho was 0.72 (0.14), and Cronbach's α was 0.98. Conclusions: The preliminary core set for post-stroke disability assessment and verification can offer comprehensive information on the performance of daily-life activities of chronic stroke survivors. Abstract: Chemical and electrical characteristics of Ti-based nanocrystals containing germanium, fabricated by annealing the co-sputtered thin film with titanium silicide and germanium targets, were demonstrated for low temperature applications of nonvolatile memory. Formation and composition characteristics of nanocrystals (NCs) at various annealing temperatures were examined by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photon-emission spectroscopy, respectively. It was observed that the addition of germanium (Ge) significantly reduces the proposed thermal budget necessary for Ti-based NC formation due to the rise of morphological instability and agglomeration properties during annealing. NC structures formed after annealing at 500°C, and separated well at 600°C annealing. However, it was also observed that significant thermal desorption of Ge atoms occurs at 600°C due to the sublimation of formatted GeO phase and results in a serious decrease of memory window. Therefore, an approach to effectively restrain Ge thermal desorption is proposed by encapsulating the Ti-based trapping layer with a thick silicon oxide layer before 600°C annealing. The electrical characteristics of data retention in the sample with the 600°C annealing exhibited better performance than the 500°C-annealed sample, a result associated with the better separation and better crystallization of the NC structures. Abstract: This study investigated the effects of ultrasound (US) at different frequencies on fracture healing over a three-week period in a rabbit fibular fracture model. Forty-five adult New Zealand White rabbits were divided into five groups: a control group and four groups treated with US frequencies of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 MHz (0.5 W/cm2, 200-μs burst, pulsed 1:4). After anesthesia, transverse osteotomy was performed on the fibula bone. This was followed by intravital staining and fluorescence microscopic examination of new bone formation and biomechanical tests of torsional stiffness at the osteotomy site. Results showed that total new bone formation and torsional stiffness of the fibula were greater in all US-treated groups than in the control group. No significant difference was found between any of the four US-treated groups. The US treatment also enhanced bone growth of the sham-treated contralateral fracture site. These results suggest that US treatment at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 MHz can enhance fracture healing in a rabbit model. Abstract: Provocative tests are useful in diagnosing biceps tendon tendinitis. This is the first study to establish the reliability of these tests by comparing the resuts with musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) findings. This study examined 125 patients (69 women and 56 men) and 143 shoulders with shoulder pain. Yergason’s test, Speed’s test and a bicipital groove tenderness test were performed and musculoskeletal US findings were used as standard reference. Biceps tendon tendinitis was diagnosed with US in 39.1% of the patients and, of those, 55.3% had coexisting rotator cuff injury. The sensitivity and specificity of Yergason’s test were 32% and 78%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of Speed’s test were 63% and 58%, respectively. In conclusion, all three tests are limited by poor sensitivity. US can be an image modality choice in diagnosing biceps pathology. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Formation and composition analyses of titanium oxinitride nanocrystals (NCs) fabricated via treating a magnetron co-sputtered thin film of titanium and silicon dioxide with a rapid thermal annealing in nitrogen ambient were demonstrated for nonvolatile memory applications. Phase separation characteristics with different annealing conditions were examined by transmission electron microscopy and chemical bonding characteristics were confirmed by X-ray photon emission spectra. It was observed that a blanket layer composed mainly of titanium oxide was still present as annealing temperature was increased to 700°C, associated with the thermodynamically stable phase of titanium oxide. Furthermore, a higher thermal treatment of 900°C induced formation of a well-separated NC structure and caused simultaneously partial nitridation of the titanium oxide, thereby forming titanium oxinitride NCs. A significant capacitance–voltage hysteresis in threshold voltage shift at 1V was easily achieved under a small sweeping voltage range of +2V/−2V, and a memory window retention of 2.2V was obtained after 107 s by extrapolation under a 1s initial-program/erase condition of +5V/−5V, respectively. Abstract: This study investigates the resistance switching characteristics of Cr2O3-based resistance random access memory (RRAM) with Pt/Cr2O3/TiN and Pt/Cr2O3/Pt structures. Only devices with Pt/Cr2O3/TiN structure exhibit bipolar switching behavior after the forming process because TiN was able to work as an effective oxygen reservoir but Pt was not. Oxygen migration between Cr2O3 and TiN was observed clearly before and after resistance switching from Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) analysis. Both low resistance state, ON state, and high resistance state, OFF state, of Pt/Cr2O3/TiN structures are stable and reproducible during a successive resistive switching. The resistance ratio of ON and OFF state is over 102, on top of that, the retention properties of both states are very stable after 104 s with a voltage of −0.2V. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The effect of ammonia gas on amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide thin film transistors is investigated. The ammonia is incorporated into the sputtered a-IGZO film during the deposition process. The results indicate that the sub-threshold swing of the NH3 incorporated TFTs is significantly improved from 2.8 to 1.0V/decade, and the hysteresis phenomenon is also suppressed during the forward and reverse sweeping measurement. By X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses, Zn–N and O–H bonds are observed in ammonia incorporated a-IGZO film. Therefore, the improvements in the electrical performance of TFTs are attributed to the passivation of dangling bonds and/or defects by ammonia. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this study, reproducible resistance switching effects were demonstrated on a relatively thin FeO x layer in the TiN/SiO2/FeO x /FePt structure produced by oxidizing the surface of a FePt electrode during a plasma-enhanced tetraethyl orthosilicate oxide deposition process. Characteristics of the non-stoichiometric FeO x transition layer were examined by Auger electron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. In addition, characteristics of the forming process as well as the current transport characteristics after forming process in the TiN/SiO2/FeO x /FePt structure were discussed. Moreover, the role of the silicon oxide layer was also experimentally demonstrated to act as an additional supplier of oxygen ions for the switching requirement by biasing high voltage bias conditions. Abstract: The influence of tensile mechanical strain on gate-induced floating-body effect (GIFBE) in advanced partially depleted SOI n-MOSFETs was investigated. Both drain current and mobility enhance after applying strain due to the reduction of average transfer effective mass. However, it was found that the GIFBE becomes serious under the mechanical strain. To explain this phenomenon, we first clarify the mechanism of GIFBE using different operation conditions. The experiment results indicate that the GIFBE can be attributed to the anode hole injection (AHI) rather than the widely accepted mechanism of electron band (EVB) tunneling. Based on the AHI model, the enhanced GIFBE under the mechanical strain is mainly due to the narrowing of band gap induced by the strain in the poly-gate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
