Background: Mufangji tang (MFJT) is composed of Ramulus Cinnamomi, Radix Ginseng, Cocculus orbiculatus (Linn.) DC., and Gypsum. In clinical settings, MFJT has been effectively employed in addressing a range of respiratory disorders, notably including pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). However, the mechanism of action of MFJT on PAH remains unknown. Methods: In this study, a monocrotaline-induced PAH rat model was established and treated with MFJT. The therapeutic effects of MFJT on PAH rat model were evaluated. Network pharmacology was conducted to screen the possible targets for MFJT on PAH, and the molecular docking between the main active components and the core targets was carried out. The key targets identified from network pharmacology were tested. Results: Results showed significant therapeutic effects of MFJT on PAH rat model. Analysis of network pharmacology revealed several potential targets related to apoptosis, inflammation, oxidative stress, and vascular remodeling. Molecular docking showed that the key components were well docked with the core targets. Further experimental validation results that MFJT treatment induced apoptosis (downregulated Bcl-2 levels and upregulated Bax levels in lung tissue), inhibited inflammatory response and oxdative stress (decreased the levels of IL-1β, TNF-α, inducible NOS, and malondialdehyde, and increased the levels of endothelial nitric oxide synthase, nitric oxide, glutathione and superoxide dismutase), reduced the proliferation of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (downregulated ET-1 and β-catenin levels and ERK1/2 phosphorylation, increased GSK3β levels). Conclusion: Our study revealed MFJT treatment could alleviate PAH in rats via induction of apoptosis, inhibition of inflammation and oxidative stress, and the prevention of vascular remodeling. Towards the end of 2019, a novel coronavirus pneumonia (coronavirus disease 19, COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection emerged in Wuhan. The SARS-CoV-2 virus quickly spread across the globe, seriously affecting public health and economic development of countries worldwide. Currently, antiviral drugs developed for COVID-19 lack strong clinical trial support and the high mutation rate of the virus causes difficulties in vaccine development, thus a complex and delayed large scale role out of an efficacious vaccine. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used for treating various conditions for thousands of years and has a unique systems theory. It can be individualized into specific therapeutic regimens according to the patients' physical condition, clinical symptoms, and other distinguishing factors. In addition, TCM often has different effects at different disease stages, thus contributing to disease prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Existing evidence shows that TCM has efficacy in the treatment of COVID-19. The active ingredients of TCM have various pharmacological properties, including antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activity, with clinical trials showing that these prescriptions reduce symptoms of COVID-19, promote viral clearance, and ultimately improve survival in infected patients. Four novel, rare carbon-bridged citrinin dimers, namely dicitrinones G–J (1–4), and five known analogs (5–9) were isolated from the starfish-derived fungus Penicillium sp. GGF 16-1-2. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis and quantum chemical calculations. Compounds 1–9 exhibited strong antifungal activities against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides with LD50 values from 0.61 μg/mL to 16.14 μg/mL. Meanwhile, all compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against human pancreatic cancer BXPC-3 and PANC-1 cell lines; as a result, compound 1 showed more significant cytotoxicities than the positive control against both cell lines. The modulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels is crucial for cellular homeostasis and determination of cellular fate. A sublethal level of ROS sustains cell proliferation, differentiation and promotes tumor metastasis, while a drastic ROS burst directly induces apoptosis. Herein, surface-oxidized arsenene nanosheets (As/AsxOy NSs) with type II heterojunction are fabricated with efficient ·O2− and 1O2 production and glutathione consumption through prolonging the lifetime of photo-excited electron-hole pairs. Moreover, the portion of AsxOy with oxygen vacancies not only catalyzes a Fenton-like reaction, generating ·OH and O2 from H2O2, but also inactivates main anti-oxidants to cut off the "retreat routes" of ROS. After polydopamine (PDA) and cancer cell membrane (M) coating, the engineered As/AsxOy@PDA@M NSs serve as an intelligent theranostic platform with active tumor targeting and long-term blood circulation. Given its narrow-band-gap-enabled in vivo fluorescence imaging properties, As/AsxOy@PDA@M NSs could be applied as an imaging-guided non-invasive and real-time nanomedicine for cancer therapy. Highlights: 2D Sn nanosheets (SnNSs) were prepared through the combination of cryogenic exfoliation and liquid-phase exfoliation. The functionalized 2D SnNSs have good stability, superior biocompatibility, high photothermal conversion efficiency, and multimode imaging capability.Stanene (Sn)-based materials have been extensively applied in industrial production and daily life, but their potential biomedical application remains largely unexplored, which is due to the absence of the appropriate and effective methods for fabricating Sn-based biomaterials. Herein, we explored a new approach combining cryogenic exfoliation and liquid-phase exfoliation to successfully manufacture two-dimensional (2D) Sn nanosheets (SnNSs). The obtained SnNSs exhibited a typical sheet-like structure with an average size of ~ 100 nm and a thickness of ~ 5.1 nm. After PEGylation, the resulting PEGylated SnNSs (SnNSs@PEG) exhibited good stability, superior biocompatibility, and excellent photothermal performance, which could serve as robust photothermal agents for multi-modal imaging (fluorescence/photoacoustic/photothermal imaging)-guided photothermal elimination of cancer. Furthermore, we also used first-principles density functional theory calculations to investigate the photothermal mechanism of SnNSs, revealing that the free electrons in upper and lower layers of SnNSs contribute to the conversion of the photo to thermal. This work not only introduces a new approach to fabricate 2D SnNSs but also establishes the SnNSs-based nanomedicines for photonic cancer theranostics. Maximizing the accumulation of anticancer medicine in the tumor is the priority to achieve minimal invasive cancer therapy, which raises high demands on tumor-targeting ability of drug delivery systems. Herein, we adopted an emerging "cell-drug" strategy via the nanoplatform construction to achieve high aggregation and intratumoral distribution. We fabricated gold nanostars (GNSs) with HER-2 monoclonal antibody (trastuzumab) and near-infrared region (NIR) photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) to obtain GNS@ICG-Ab, which combined the photothermal therapy with photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT) that rely on enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency of GNS and 1O2 generator ICG under the exposure of a NIR laser. Tumor-tropism CIK cells loaded with GNS@ICG-Ab were able to migrate into tumors and make a difference in efficient accumulation and uniform distribution of the GNS@ICG-Ab-CIK nanoplatform inside tumors based on fluorescence, photoacoustic (PA), and computed tomography (CT) imaging observations. Encouraged by the improvements in tumor targeting and retention presented by real-time imaging, we employed the novel nanoplatform to synergistically inhibit the progression of tumors in SK-BR-3 tumor-bearing mice via PTT/PDT and immunotherapy-implemented by CIK cells for activating the immune response, and with the specific linkage between trastuzumab and SK-BR-3 tumor cells, our platform could exert a precise strike of PDT/PTT. Taken together, the integrating tri-modal imaging with tri-modal therapy endows CIK-GNS@ICG-Ab with promising potential in cancer theranostics and lays a solid foundation for the development of immune cell application in nanomedicine delivery. Perturbing plaque macrophages: Macrophages in atherosclerotic lesions promote inflammation and plaque progression and are an attractive therapeutic target. Here, Tao et al. used nanoparticles to inhibit pro-atherogenic macrophages by siRNA targeting Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase γ. Nanoparticle treatment induced phagocytosis of apoptotic cells in plaques and promoted plaque stability, reducing necrotic area and increasing fibrous cap thickness in a mouse model of atherosclerosis. This study establishes proof of concept for siRNA nanoparticles targeting lesional macrophages as a treatment for atherosclerosis. Atherosclerotic lesional macrophages express molecules that promote plaque progression, but lack of mechanisms to therapeutically target these molecules represents a major gap in translational cardiovascular research. Here, we tested the efficacy of a small interfering RNA (siRNA) nanoparticle (NP) platform targeting a plaque-destabilizing macrophage molecule—Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase γ (CaMKIIγ). CaMKIIγ becomes activated in advanced human and mouse plaque macrophages and drives plaque necrosis by suppressing the expression of the efferocytosis receptor MerTK. When macrophage-targeted siCamk2g NPs were administered to Western diet–fed Ldlr−/− mice, the atherosclerotic lesions showed decreased CaMKIIγ and increased MerTK expression in macrophages, improved phagocytosis of apoptotic cells (efferocytosis), decreased necrotic core area, and increased fibrous cap thickness—all signs of increased plaque stability—compared with mice treated with control siRNA NPs. The prepared GeQDs possess an average lateral size of about 4.5 nm and thickness of about 2.2 nm. The functionalized GeQDs were demonstrated to be robust photothermal agents (PTAs) with outstanding photothermal conversion efficacy (higher than those of graphene and BPQDs), superior stability, and excellent biocompatibility. The off-target activation of photosensitizers is one of the most well-known obstacles to effective photodynamic therapy (PDT). The selected activation of photosensitizers in cancer cells is highly desired to overcome this problem. We developed a strategy that enabled diselenide bonds to link hyaluronic acid (HA) and photosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) to assemble the micelles (HA-sese-Ce6 NPs) that can target cancer and achieve a redox responsive release of drugs to enhance the PDT efficiency in breast cancer. The HA was used to form a hydrophilic shell that can target cluster of differentiation 44 (CD44) on the cancer cells. The selenium-containing core is easily dissembled in a redox environment to release Ce6. The triggered release of Ce6 in a redox condition and the positive feedback release by activated Ce6 were observed in vitro. In cytotoxicity assays and in vitro cellular uptake assays, the increased PDT efficiency and targeted internalization of HA-sese-Ce6 NPs in the cells were verified, compared to a free Ce6 treated group. Similar results were showed in the therapeutic study and in vivo fluorescence imaging in an orthotopic mammary fat pad tumor model. In addition, a significant inhibition of metastasis was found after the HA-sese-Ce6 NPs treatment. In general, this study promises an ingenious and easy strategy for improved PDT efficiency. Men with diabetic erectile dysfunction (ED) respond poorly to the currently available oral phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors. Therefore, functional therapies for diabetic ED are needed. Stromal vascular fraction (SVF) and the adenovirus-mediated cartilage oligomeric matrix angiopoietin-1 (Ad-COMP-Ang1) gene are known to play critical roles in penile erection. We previously reported that SVF and Ad-COMP-Ang1 have only a short-term effect in restoring erectile function. Further improvements to ED therapy are needed for long-lasting effects. In the present study, we aimed to test if the combination of SVF and Ad-COMP-Ang1 could extend the erection effect in diabetic ED. We found that the combination therapy showed a long-term effect in restoring erectile function through enhanced penile endothelial and neural cell regeneration. Combination therapy with SVF and Ad-COMP-Ang1 notably restored cavernous endothelial cell numbers, pericyte numbers, endothelial cell-cell junctions, decreased cavernous endothelial cell permeability, and promoted neural regeneration for at least 4 weeks in diabetic mice. In summary, this is an initial description of the long-term effect of combination therapy with SVF and Ad-COMP-Ang1 in restoring erectile function through a dual effect on endothelial and neural cell regeneration. Compared with intracellular drug delivery, drugs with extracellular targeting sites are rarely considered. As one of these drugs, cyclopamine (CYC) is a promising anticancer drug that functions by targeting the cell membrane receptor. For improving therapeutic effect, an albumin-based nano-system (ABN) with the capacity for extracellular retention was developed. The ABN was formulated by incorporating bovine serum albumin (BSA) into nanoparticles at the denaturing temperature of BSA, with CYC acting as a hydrophobic nucleation site, followed by stabilization upon heat-induced disulfide cross-linking. The resultant ABNs are negatively charged with a nanoparticle size that can be delicately regulated by varying the reaction time. In MDA-MB-231 cells, the size and charge of ABNs significantly affected the extracellular retention capacity, with ABN-300 nm exhibiting an enhanced cytotoxic effect. In vivo fluorescence imaging revealed obvious and persistent tumor accumulation of ABNs. A therapeutic study in an orthotopic mammary fat pad tumor model shows that ABN-300 nm possesses the most remarkable antitumor effect compared with the control groups. Background/Aims: Calycosin, a phytoestrogenic compound, has recently emerged as a promising antitumor drug. It has been shown that calycosin suppresses growth and induces apoptosis of breast cancer cells. However, the effect of calycosin on migration and invasion of breast cancer cells and the underlying molecular mechanisms have not been elucidated. Methods: Human breast cancer cells MCF-7 and T47D were treated with, or without, different doses (0, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 100 or 150 μM) of calycosin, and the viability of different groups was determined by MTT assay. Next, the inhibitory effect of higher doses (50, 100 or 150 μM) of calycosin on migration and invasion of the two cell lines was determined by wound healing and transwell assay. The relative expression levels of forkhead box P3 (Foxp3), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in MCF-7 and T47D cells were determined by quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot. Results: Treatment with lower doses (6.25 or 12.5 μM) promoted proliferation of breast cancer cells, but with higher doses significantly reduced the viability of MCF-7 and T47D cells. Furthermore, higher doses of calycosin were found to inhibit migration and invasion of the two cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, treatment with a higher dose of calycosin significantly reduced the expression levels of Foxp3, followed by down-regulation of VEGF and MMP-9 in both MCF-7 and T47D breast cancer cells. Conclusion: Treatment with a higher dose of calycosin tends to reduce migration and invasion capacity of human breast cancer cells, by targeting Foxp3-mediated VEGF and MMP-9 expression. Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) have attracted a lot of attention during the last decade. VANETs can not only improve driving safety, but also convenience, and support most future Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Due to the highly dynamic network topology of VANETs, many geographic routing protocols have been proposed and use real-time traffic information as an important metric to select a reliable forwarding path. However, most of the existing works do not describe how to gather real-time traffic. They either assume this information is already available, or can query an existing traffic center. Few studies have noticed this issue but the proposed solutions only consider a small region. In this paper, we propose a Comprehensive Real-Time Traffic Map (CRT Map) to collect wide-ranging real-time traffic information with low overhead. In the design of a CRT Map, the concept of Crowdsensing is adopted. Vehicles cooperatively gather traffic information and share it with each other to construct an overview of the whole road network traffic. In addition, we design a CRT Map Based Routing (CBR), which takes into account the connectivity of consecutive roads in routing decisions. Background: Several case-control studies investigating the relationship between genetic polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase (GST) M1, GSTT1, and GSTP1 (rs1695) and the risk of breast cancer have reported contradictory results. We therefore performed a meta-analysis to clarify this issue.Materials and Methods: An updated meta-analysis using PubMed and Web of Knowledge databases for the eligible case-control studies was performed. Random- or fixed-effects model was used.Results: A total of 10,067 cancer cases and 12,276 controls in 41 independent case-control studies from 19 articles were included in this meta-analysis. Significant increase in risk of breast cancer for Asians was found in GSTM1-null genotype (P=0.012, odds ratio [OR] =1.17, 95% confidence interval [CI] =1.04-1.32) and GSTT1-null genotype (P=0.039, OR =1.19, 95% CI =1.01-1.41). In addition, our results showed that the GSTP1 (rs1695) polymorphisms can significantly increase the risk among Caucasians (P=0.042, OR =1.16, 95% CI =1.01-1.34). Sensitivity analysis and publication bias further confirmed the dependability of the results in this meta-analysis.Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that both GSTM1- and GSTT1-null polymorphisms are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer in Asians and that GSTP1 Val105Ile (rs1695) polymorphism is associated with an increased breast cancer risk in Caucasians. The article presents a study focusing on antioxidative activity, moisture retention and viscosity stability of Auricularia fuscosuccinea genus. The findings include strong antioxidative effects of water extracts (WAF-W) and ethanol extracts (EAF-W) of Auricularia fuscosuccinea (Montagne) Farlow, white strain (AF-W) having stronger antioxidative effects, and no corrugation or fissures in WAF.

This study was aimed at investigating the antioxidant, whitening, and moisture-retention properties of Lactobacillus rhamnosus spent culture supernatant (Lr-SCS) in cosmetic applications. Results reveal that Lr-SCS effectively and gradually scavenges 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl as well as 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cations, and increases reducing power in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, Lr-SCS can also suppress tyrosinase activity in vitro and effectively promote moisture retention. Heat treatment at 100 °C for 30 min does not influence the functions of Lr-SCS. Background: Perioperative fluid restriction can lead to better clinical outcomes and reduced complications. However, whether perioperative fluid restriction can alter the patient's postoperative cellular immunity is unknown. Therefore, a randomized, prospective clinical study was designed to determine whether fluid restriction improves immunological outcome in elderly patients who undergo gastrointestinal surgery for cancer removal. Methods: A total of 179 patients aged 65 years or older were recruited for the study and were randomly assigned to receive the restricted fluid regimen (R group) or the standard fluid regimen (S group). Postoperative T-lymphocyte subpopulations (CD3, CD4, and CD8) frequencies and monocyte HLA-DR expression was investigated. Perioperative complications and cellular immunity changes were analyzed comparatively between the two groups. Results: The restricted intravenous fluid regimen was associated with significantly less postoperative complications (1.5 complications/patient vs. S group: 2.2 complications/patient), especially for infection complications (15% vs. S group: 27%, p = 0.04). Circulating CD3 T-cells were suppressed after surgery in both treatment groups, but the cell frequency (cell/μL) was higher in the R group (746 vs. S group: 480 at postoperative day (POD) 2, p = 0.022; 878 vs. 502 at POD 3, p = 0.005; 892 vs. 674 at POD 5, p = 0.042). Similarly, the HLA-DR expression (% of all T cells) in monocytes were decreased in both groups, but the expression remained higher in the R group (66.20 vs. S group: 51.97 at POD 1, p = 0.029; 68.19 vs. 51.26 at POD 2, p = 0.039; 72.19 vs. 57.45 at POD 3, p = 0.014; 73.92 vs. 60.46 at POD 5, p = 0.036). Multivariate analysis suggested that perioperative CD3 T cell changes were associated with the development of postoperative complications [odds ratio (OR) = 1.963; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.019-3.782; p = 0.044] and postoperative infections (OR = 3.106; 95% CI 1.302-7.406; p = 0.011). Conclusions: In elderly gastrointestinal cancer patients, cellular immunity is better preserved by the perioperative fluid restriction regimen. The goal of this study was to extract β-carotene from CYY95-26 sweet potatoes. Acetone was used as the solvent to successfully extract β-carotene. To achieve better extraction results, acetone concentration was required to be higher than 75%. Two extraction parameters, including acetone concentration and extraction time, were evaluated with the response surface methodology. The process was optimized, and optimal extraction conditions were determined to be 91.1% of acetone and 19.6 min extraction. Acetone concentration was a significant factor of the β-carotene extraction. The multiple extraction improved the extraction performance. After the third extraction, 278.1 mg/ kg of β-carotene was extracted. The major carotene of CYY95-26 sweet potatoes was all-trans-β-carotene. The biological effects of specific wavelengths, so-called "far-infrared radiation" produced from ceramic material (cFIR), on whole organisms are not yet well understood. In this study, we investigated the biological effects of cFIR on murine melanoma cells (B16- F10) at body temperature. cFIR irradiation treatment for 48 h resulted in an 11.8% decrease in the proliferation of melanoma cells relative to the control.Meanwhile, incubation of cells with cFIR for 48 h significantly resulted in 56.9% and 15.7% decreases in the intracellular heat shock protein (HSP)70 and intracellular nitric oxide (iNO) contents, respectively. Furthermore, cFIR treatment induced 6.4% and 12.3% increases in intracellular reactive oxygen species stained by 5-(and 6)-carboxyl-2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate and dihydrorhodamine 123, respectively. Sincemalignant melanomas are known to have high HSP70 expression and iNO activity, the suppressive effects of cFIR on HSP70 and NO may warrant future interest in antitumor applications. Craniofacial defects that occur through gene mutation during development increase vulnerability to eustachian tube dysfunction. These defects can lead to an increased incidence of otitis media. We examined the effects of a mutation in the Sh3pxd2b gene (Sh3pxd2bnee) on the progression of otitis media and hearing impairment at various developmental stages. We found that all mice that had the Sh3pxd2bneemutation went on to develop craniofacial dysmorphologies and subsequently otitis media, by as early as 11 days of age. We found noteworthy changes in cilia and goblet cells of the middle ear mucosa in Sh3pxd2bnee mutant mice using scanning electronic microscopy. By measuring craniofacial dimensions, we determined for the first time in an animal model that this mouse has altered eustachian tube morphology consistent with a more horizontal position of the eustachian tube. All mutants were found to have hearing impairment. Expression of TNF-a and TLR2, which correlates with inflammation in otitis media, was up-regulated in the ears of mutant mice when examined by immunohistochemistry and semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Abstract  In vitro grown shoot tips of transgenic papaya lines (Carica papaya L.) were successfully cryopreserved by vitrification. Shoot tips were excised from stock shoots that were preconditioned in vitro for 45–50-day-old and placed on hormone-free MS medium with 0.09 M sucrose. After loading for 60 min with a mixture of 2 M glycerol and 0.4 M sucrose at 25°C, shoot tips were dehydrated with a highly concentrated vitrification solution (PVS2) for 80 min at 0°C and plunged directly into liquid nitrogen. The regeneration rate was approximately 90% after 2 months post-thawing. Successfully vitrified and warmed shoot tips of three non-transgenic varieties and 13 transgenic lines resumed growth within 2 months and developed shoots in the absence of intermediate callus formation. Dehydration with PVS2 was important for the cryopreservation of transgenic papaya lines. This vitrification procedure for cryopreservation appears to be promising as a routine method for cryopreserving shoot tips of transgenic papaya line germplasm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Protein microarray has progressed rapidly in the past few years, but it is still hard to popularize it in many developing countries or small hospitals owing to the technical expertise required in practice. We developed a cheap and easy-to-use protein microarray based on dot immunogold filtration assay for parallel analysis of ToRCH-related antibodies including Toxoplasma gondii, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 in sera of pregnant women. It does not require any expensive instruments and the assay results can be clearly recognized by the naked eye. We analyzed 186 random sera of outpatients at the gynecological department with our microarray and commercial ELISA kit, and the results showed there was no significant difference between the two detection methods. Validated by clinical application, the microarray is easy to use and has a unique advantage in cost and time. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a human urine preparation on the differentiation of tumor cells. Design: The pheochromocytoma PC12 cells were used to examine the effects of a human urine preparation, CDA-2 on the induction of differentiation markers, neurofilaments, and compared with that induced by nerve growth factor (NGF). The MAPK/ERK kinase (MEK) inhibitor U0126 was used to examine the involvement of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway in this differentiation inducing effect. Results: We find that CDA-2 could induce differentiation of pheochromocytoma PC12 cells, as evidenced by the markedly increased expression of neurofilaments to a level comparable to those induced by NGF. This phenomenon was accompanied by the phosphorylation of extracellular-signal–regulated kinase (ERK) and could be inhibited by the MEK inhibitor, U0126. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate the presence of active components in the human urine extract that can induce differentiation of PC12 cells and may involve the ERK signaling pathway. The enhanced optical transmission through the annular aluminum metal with different number of concentric rings arranged in a long-range periodic structure on the silicon substrate is investigated. The measured transmission spectra demonstrate that the surface plasmon modes depend sensitively on the structural parameters of the metallic rings. The degenerate (1,0), (1,1), and (2,1) Al/Si surface plasmon modes are determined by the long periodicity of the structure. The localized modes in cavities with different length can be observed in this structure as well. These phenomena suggest that both surface plasmons and localized cavity modes are excited within super unit cell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports the optical properties of Al/Si structure and trilayer Ag/SiO2/Ag plasmonic thermal emitter with different concentric metal rings on top metal film. It is found that when the metal width is smaller than 40% of the period (=gap+metal width), the (1,0) Al/Si surface plasmon leads to a maximum in the transmission spectra; otherwise, the opposite is observed. The dispersion relations and emission spectra of the plasmonic thermal emitters were investigated. The emission peaks are independent of the gap width and redshift as annular metal width increases. This phenomenon suggests the excitation of Fabry-Pérot type resonance within cavity of Ag/SiO2/Ag structure. No (1,0) Ag/SiO2 surface plasmon was observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This study examined the feasibility of transabdominal intestinal ultrasonography in evaluating acute gastrointestinal injury (AGI).Methods: A total of 116 patients were included. Intestinal ultrasonography was conducted daily within 1 week after admission to the intensive care unit. Ultrasonography indicators including intestinal diameter, changes in the intestinal folds, thickness of the intestinal wall, stratification of the intestinal wall, and intestinal peristalsis (movement of the intestinal contents) were observed to determine the acute gastrointestinal injury ultrasonography (AGIUS) score. The gastrointestinal and urinary tract sonography ultrasound (GUTS) protocol score was also calculated. During the first week of the study, the gastrointestinal failure (GIF) score was determined daily. The correlations between transabdominal intestinal scores (AGIUS and GUTS) and the GIF score were analyzed to clarify the feasibility of evaluating AGI through observation of the intestine. The utility of intestinal ultrasonography indicators in predicting feeding intolerance was investigated to improve the ability of clinicians to manage AGI.Results: A total of 751 ultrasonic examinations were performed with 511 images (68%) considered to be of "good quality." AGIUS and GUTS scores differed significantly between AGI patients (GIF score 0-2) and non-AGI patients (GIF score 3-4) (p < 0.001). Both scores correlated positively with GIF score (r = 0.54, p < 0.001; r = 0.66, p < 0.001). These ultrasonography indicators could predict feeding intolerance, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.60 (0.48-0.71; intestinal diameter), 0.76 (0.67-0.85; intestinal folds), 0.71 (0.62-0.80; wall thickness), 0.77 (0.69-0.86; wall stratification), and 0.78 (0.68-0.88; intestinal peristalsis). Compared to patients with a normal rate of peristalsis (5-10/min), patients with abnormal peristalsis rates (< 5/min or > 10/min) have increased risk for feeding intolerance (16/83 vs. 25/33, p < 0.001).Conclusions: The transabdominal intestinal ultrasonography represents an effective means for assessing gastrointestinal injury in critically ill patients. Biotite, also called black mica (BM), is a group of sheet silicate minerals with great potential in various fields. However, synthesis of high‐quality BM nanosheets (NSs) remains a huge challenge. Here, an exfoliation approach is provided that combines calcination, n‐butyllithium exchange and intercalation, and liquid exfoliating processes for the high‐yield synthesis of ultrathin BM NSs. Due to the presence of MgO, Fe2O3, and FeO in these NSs, PEGylated BM can be engineered as an intelligent theranostic platform with the following unique features: i) Fe3+ can damage the tumor microenvironment (TME) through glutathione consumption and O2 production; ii) Generated O2 can be further catalyzed by MgO with oxygen vacancy to generate ·O2−; iii) The Fe2+‐catalyzed Fenton reaction can produce ·OH by disproportionation reactions of H2O2 in the TME; iv) Reactions in (i) and (iii) circularly regenerate Fe2+ and Fe3+ for continuous consumption of glutathione and H2O2 and constant production of ·OH and O2; v) The NSs can be triggered by a 650 nm laser to generate ·O2− from O2 as well as by an 808 nm laser to generate local hyperthermia; and vi) The fluorescent, photoacoustic, and photothermal imaging capabilities of the engineered NSs allow for multimodal imaging‐guided breast cancer treatment.
