Age and sex have a profound effect on cytosine methylation levels in humans and many other species. Here we analyzed DNA methylation profiles of 2400 tissues derived from 37 primate species including 11 haplorhine species (baboons, marmosets, vervets, rhesus macaque, chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutan, humans) and 26 strepsirrhine species (suborders Lemuriformes and Lorisiformes). From these we present here, pan-primate epigenetic clocks which are highly accurate for all primates including humans (age correlation R = 0.98). We also carried out in-depth analysis of baboon DNA methylation profiles and generated five epigenetic clocks for baboons (Olive-yellow baboon hybrid), one of which, the pan-tissue epigenetic clock, was trained on seven tissue types (fetal cerebral cortex, adult cerebral cortex, cerebellum, adipose, heart, liver, and skeletal muscle) with ages ranging from late fetal life to 22.8 years of age. Using the primate data, we characterize the effect of age and sex on individual cytosines in highly conserved regions. We identify 11 sex-related CpGs on autosomes near genes (POU3F2, CDYL, MYCL, FBXL4, ZC3H10, ZXDC, RRAS, FAM217A, RBM39, GRIA2, UHRF2). Low overlap can be observed between age- and sex-related CpGs. Overall, this study advances our understanding of conserved age- and sex-related epigenetic changes in primates, and provides biomarkers of aging for all primates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Mental health remains a significant issue among young people in the US and elsewhere. Evidence of the beneficial role Hip Hop-based approaches can play in this space is growing. The value of such approaches centers on links to community, culture, and the therapeutic potential of practicing certain Hip Hop elements. Yet, while there has been a steady growth in Hip Hop-based approaches, little work has explored how they can overlap, complement, or reinforce each other. In response, this article explores the theoretical synergies between two established Hip Hop-based models – "Hip Hop and Empowerment" (HHE) and "Therapeutic Beat Making" (TBM) – to offer an integrated approach that draws on the complementarity between and uniqueness of each. Findings: Authors identify an integrated HHE–TBM model for supporting youth mental health which forefronts sense of community, cultural relevance, social justice, and empowerment. Authors outline a practice model, which leverages the best of activities, reflections, and discussions, and indicate its potential in working adaptively with diverse communities of young people. Applications: When engaging Hip Hop for therapeutic means, whether for health promotion or complex therapy, it is a dynamic, creative, culturally sensitive, regulating, and developmental means for finding common ground and creating rapport. It bridges creative and insight-oriented practices. It embraces the ability to generate emotional responses from creating and analyzing music, including esthetic emotions (i.e. appreciation (of qualities)), utilitarian emotions (i.e. functional, motivational, relevant to immediate well-being, goal-oriented), and epistemic emotions (i.e. gained knowledge or insight, awareness). In the last quarter of the eighteenth century the British Parliament voted public money to pay for a number of monuments to public figures in Westminster Abbey and St Paul's Cathedral. This was a critical period in the move towards creating a pantheon to commemorate national heroes. The central role of Westminster Abbey in national life had never before been challenged, but from around 1798, and certainly from the memorialization of Admiral Lord Nelson in 1805, Parliament's commissioning of monuments shifted its focus to St Paul's Cathedral to create a national mausoleum for memorials to military and naval heroes. This article explores the significance of this transitional period in the history of Westminster Abbey for the Abbey itself and for the development of a national school of British sculptors, looking specifically at the process of commissioning the monuments to Captain Montagu by John Flaxman and Captains Harvey and Hutt by John Bacon the Elder in 1798. Nonhuman primate (NHP) studies are crucial to biomedical research. NHPs are the species most similar to humans in lifespan, body size, and hormonal profiles. Planning research requires statistical power evaluation, which is difficult to perform when lacking directly relevant preliminary data. This is especially true for NHP developmental programming studies, which are scarce. We review the sample sizes reported, challenges, areas needing further work, and goals of NHP maternal nutritional programming studies. The literature search included 27 keywords, for example, maternal obesity, intrauterine growth restriction, maternal high-fat diet, and maternal nutrient reduction. Only fetal and postnatal offspring studies involving tissue collection or imaging were included. Twenty-eight studies investigated maternal over-nutrition and 33 under-nutrition; 23 involved macaques and 38 baboons. Analysis by sex was performed in 19; minimum group size ranged from 1 to 8 (mean 4.7 ± 0.52, median 4, mode 3) and maximum group size from 3 to 16 (8.3 ± 0.93, 8, 8). Sexes were pooled in 42 studies; minimum group size ranged from 2 to 16 (mean 5.3 ± 0.35, median 6, mode 6) and maximum group size from 4 to 26 (10.2 ± 0.92, 8, 8). A typical study with sex-based analyses had group size minimum 4 and maximum 8 per sex. Among studies with sexes pooled, minimum group size averaged 6 and maximum 8. All studies reported some significant differences between groups. Therefore, studies with group sizes 3–8 can detect significance between groups. To address deficiencies in the literature, goals include increasing age range, more frequently considering sex as a biological variable, expanding topics, replicating studies, exploring intergenerational effects, and examining interventions. Introduction: Well‐being issues are increasing amongst dental students. Social relationships can be important for student support during their studies. The aim of the study was to explore dental students' feelings towards studying dentistry, social networks and chosen support during this journey. Materials and Methods: An anonymous electronic cross‐sectional survey was carried out. All dental students in a single dental school were invited to participate. Participation and answering questions was voluntary. Descriptive analyses were used for categorical data, and qualitative data were analysed thematically. Results: In total, 109 students responded. One third reported having a family member from a healthcare profession but most were not related to dental professionals. The majority of students 83% liked the course, 14% said they felt "neutral", and 5% said they did not like it. The following three themes explained this: (a) demands of the course, (b) being suited to dentistry (eg patient care) and (c) passion for dentistry as a career (or lack of). Most felt their peers were friendly (92%) and supportive (78%) but also competitive (64%). Irrespective of stress, 70% of participants sought help from family and two thirds sought help from student peers. Discussion: Most students enjoy studying dentistry despite the demands of the course. Support, workload, feeling suited to the course and a passion for dentistry as a career can affect the experience. Conclusions: Family and friends are an important source of support in this process. The number of international students coming to the U.S. for post-secondary education has been steadily increasing. Prior research has found that international students encounter many barriers to academic success, but this topic has not been previously studied for the discipline of dental hygiene. The aims of this study were to investigate the barriers and challenges to academic success faced by international students in U.S. dental hygiene programs and to explore the students' thoughts on the value they bring to those programs. The overlapping qualitative methods of semi-structured focus groups and one-on-one interviews with 12 students in three U.S. dental hygiene programs were used for this phenomenological study. In the results, six themes emerged: language proficiency, communication challenges with faculty and patients, ability to adapt to a new educational system, adjusting to cultural differences, feelings of belonging, and the value of diversity. The most significant barrier for the participants was comprehension of the English language. Didactically, these students reported that they needed additional time to study and to process examination questions. This study found that these international students studying dental hygiene in the U.S. had academic challenges similar to international students studying in other disciplines. Dental hygiene educators may need to evaluate their didactic and test-taking strategies to ensure the academic success of international students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Non‐human primate models of developmental programing by maternal mismatch between pregnancy and lactation diets are needed for translation to human programing outcomes. We present baboon offspring morphometry from birth to 3 years, and blood cortisol and adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) from 2 to 24 months. Methods: Control mothers ate chow; mismatch mothers ate 30% less than controls during pregnancy and high‐fat high‐energy diet through lactation. Results: Mismatch mothers lost weight during pregnancy. At birth, there were trends toward lower weight in mismatch offspring of both sexes (P = 0.06). From 0‐3 years, catch‐up growth occurred. Mismatch offspring male and female body weight increased faster than controls (P < 0.001). Mismatch female offspring showed greater increase in BMI (P < 0.001) and abdominal circumference (P = 0.008) vs controls. ACTH and cortisol slopes from 2 to 24 months of age were similar between groups in both sexes. Cortisol and ACTH increased after weaning in all groups. A challenge faced by many students is the loss of academic skills during the summer months. However, less attention is given to social and emotional needs during the summer. Thirty-five middle school students from low-SES homes participated in a summer program designed to improve verbal, academic, and youth development competencies. Three students in the program also participated in an intervention that used Hip Hop and Empowerment (HHE) and Therapeutic Beat Making (TBM) strategies to promote youth development and reduce elevated depressive and anxiety symptoms. Data were collected by questionnaires measuring Empowerment-based Positive Youth Development (EMPYD) indicators of Connection, Confidence, Competence, Caring, Character, Sense of community, and Active and engaged citizenship, plus well-being indicators of depression and anxiety. Results included improvements across all youth development indicators and depression and anxiety symptoms for the intervention participants. Using the Independent Samples Mann-Whitney U Test, a statistically significant decrease (worsening) between Time 1 and Time 2 measures of character were found for the non-intervention group. When comparing the intervention group to the non-intervention group at Time 2, statistically significant differences were found for improvements in character and depression and anxiety symptoms. This study suggests that a well-designed, research-based Hip Hop-integrated strategy may complement summer learning strategies and help improve mental health outcomes for low-income middle school youth. It is necessary to continue research that explores the efficacy of Hip Hop-based mental health interventions, and potential ways to mitigate social and emotional loss alongside academic loss in the summer months. Introduction: This study gathered information about life outside of the course for undergraduates studying at the School of Dentistry, Cardiff University. The aim was to explore how these external factors to the course may affect an individual's academic performance and well‐being. Materials and Methods: A cross‐sectional study design was used. An online questionnaire designed for the purpose of the study was used to capture (quantitative and qualitative) data. Questions with dichotomous options, a range of statements with Likert scales (level of agreement) and open (free‐text) questions were used. Data were analysed in SPSS using simple descriptive statistics and frequency distributions. Spearman's Rho was used to explore relationships for scaled categorical data. Content analysis was used for qualitative data. Results: Two‐thirds (n = 69, 63%) of participants reported being very stressed about their studies in the previous 12 months. The majority felt that external factors to their course (eg, lack of sleep, health issues, financial concerns, hobbies and issues with friends) had impacted on their academic lives with only 9% (n = 10) stating that their lives outside dentistry had no effect. Discussion: Those who felt able to pursue hobbies and activities reported a better work‐life balance and less stress. Questions about pursuing hobbies and sleep may help identify students at risk of being stressed or who may benefit from additional support in order to achieve a better work‐life balance. Introduction: Women threatening premature delivery receive synthetic glucocorticoids (sGC) to accelerate fetal lung maturation, reducing neonatal mortality and morbidity. Few investigations have explored potential long-term offspring side effects. We previously reported increased pericardial fat and liver lipids in 10-year-old (human equivalent 40 years) male baboons exposed to 3 antenatal sGC courses. We hypothesized middle-aged sGC male offspring show obesity-related morphometric changes. Methods: Pregnant baboons received courses of 2 betamethasone injections (175 mgkg-1·d-1 intramuscular) at 0.6, 0.64, and 0.68 gestation. At 10 to 12.5 years, we measured morphometrics and serum lipids in 5 sGC-exposed males and 10 agematched controls. We determined whether morphometric parameters predicted amount of pericardial fat or lipids. Life-course serum lipids were measured in 25 males (7-23 years) providing normal regression formulas to compare sGC baboons' lipid biological and chronological age. Results: Birth weights were similar. When studied, sGC-exposed males showed a steeper weight increase from 8 to 12 years and had increased waist and hip circumferences, neck and triceps skinfolds, and total and lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol. Triceps skinfold correlated with apical and midventricular pericardial fat thickness, hip and waist circumferences with insulin. Conclusions: Triceps skinfold and waist and hip circumferences are useful biomarkers for identifying individuals at risk for obesity and metabolic dysregulation following fetal sGC exposure. Prenatal sGC exposure predisposes male offspring to internal adiposity, greater body size, and increased serum lipids. Results provide further evidence for developmental programming by fetal sGC exposure and call attention to potential emergence of adverse life-course effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Maternal obesity gestational weight gain was lower with no correlation with fetal or placenta weights. At 0.9 gestation, MO and control F1 morphometry and ACTH were similar. MO‐F1 0.9 gestation male cortisol was lower, rising slower from 0‐2 years vs control‐F1. At birth, male MO‐F1 and control‐F1 weights were similar, but growth from 0‐2 years was steeper in MO‐F1; newborn female MO‐F1 weighed more than control‐F1 but growth from 0‐2 years was similar. New or adapted methods and tools are needed to ensure the voices of older people with cognitive impairment and dementia are included in evaluations of care services which aim to support their quality of life (QoL). In this study, cognitive interviewing practices were used with a group of 26 older service users with cognitive impairment from two service providers in New South Wales, Australia, to test and modify the Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit Easy Read (ER) survey to improve its suitability for this cohort. We used Antonovsky's "sense of coherence" framework to describe our research approach and how it was adapted to provide a manageable, meaningful, and comprehensible experience for our participants. While the modified ER format made the survey more comprehensible and meaningful, it was the techniques of cognitive interviewing that made the research approach manageable. We argue that while ER does support the research process for older service users with cognitive impairment, combining ER pictorials with the qualitative interactions with the researcher, in particular cognitive interviewing strategies, is needed to support a cohesive approach to assess care-related QoL in this vulnerable group. Background Most developmental programming studies on maternal nutrient reduction ( MNR) are in altricial rodents whose maternal nutritional burden and offspring developmental trajectory differ from precocial non-human primates and humans. Methods Control ( CTR) baboon mothers ate ad libitum; MNR mothers ate 70% global control diet in pregnancy and lactation. Results We present offspring morphometry, blood cortisol, and adrenocorticotropin ( ACTH) during second half of gestation (G) and first three postnatal years. Moderate MNR produced intrauterine growth restriction ( IUGR). IUGR males (n=43) and females (n=28) were smaller than CTR males (n=50) and females (n=47) in many measurements at many ages. In CTR, fetal ACTH increased 228% and cortisol 48% between 0.65G and 0.9G. IUGR ACTH was elevated at 0.65G and cortisol at 0.9G. 0.9G maternal gestational weight gain, fetal weight, and placenta weight were correlated. Conclusions Moderate IUGR decreased body weight and morphometric measurements at key time points and altered hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated menstrual cycles in intrauterine growth restricted (IUGR, 7‐10 years, n = 8) and age‐matched control (n = 10) baboons. Cycle duration and plasma anti‐Mullerian hormone were similar. IUGR spent more days per cycle swollen and had elevated early morning fasted serum cortisol, suggesting normal fertility in the presence of increased psychosocial stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The incidence of early childhood caries (ECC) is a global public health concern. The oral health knowledge of a caregiver can affect a child's risk for developing ECC. An exploratory study of the oral health knowledge and behaviors among caregivers of children 6 years of age and younger was conducted with a convenience sample of adults (n = 114) enrolled in English language or high school equivalency examination courses. The majority of study participants were born in Asia (47 %). Other birth regions included South America (16 %), Caribbean (16 %), Africa (10 %), and Central America (6 %). Study findings showed caregivers with low oral health knowledge were more likely to engage in behaviors that increase a child's risk for developing ECC. A statistically significant relationship was found between participants' rating of their child's dental health as poor and the belief that children should not be weaned from the nursing bottle by 12 months of age ( P = 0.002), brushing should not begin upon tooth eruption ( P = 0.01), and fluoride does not strengthen teeth and prevent dental caries ( P = 0.005). Subjects who pre-chewed their child's food also exhibited behaviors including sharing eating utensils or a toothbrush with their child ( P < 0.001). Additional caregiver behaviors included providing their child with a bottle containing cariogenic liquids in a crib ( P < 0.001). As a result of this research, it is pertinent that culturally sensitive oral health promotion programs are developed and implemented to raise awareness and reduce the risk of dental disease among immigrant populations. Background:Professionalism in health care comprises adherence to professional values and ethical codes, discipline-specific standards of practice and competencies, and specific expectations about appearance and social standing. Specialisation in a particular area of practice further increases expectations of professionalism and competency-based standards. Objective:To investigate, in an Australian setting, patients’ and physiotherapists’ perceptions of the features and value of professionalism in specific physiotherapy practice contexts. Major Findings:The professional standing of physiotherapists was similar to that of chiropractors, with judges, general practitioners and solicitors more highly regarded by both patients and physiotherapists. Participants had similar views about the importance of several elements of professionalism. In response to questions about professional appearance, both patients and physiotherapists preferred business attire for male physiotherapists, whereas opinions varied for female physiotherapists. Patient/therapist views diverged regarding the link between specialisation and professionalism. Patient participants presented with a list of physiotherapists with differing nomenclature/titles to treat their back pain indicated they were more likely to select a physiotherapist with a special interest in back pain and factors such as location of the physiotherapy service and recommendations from a friend influenced their choice of physiotherapist. In contrast, physiotherapist participants responded that postgraduate qualifications, years of experience and facilities were more important in the choice of a physiotherapist. Conclusions:Patients and physiotherapists share some views on professional behaviours and values, professional appearance and standing within the community. They differ with regard to perceptions of specialisation and how extra qualifications add to their perception of trust and professionalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to examine the association between distance education (DE) and students' sense of classroom community (SCC) in U.S. dental hygiene programs. The concept of SCC is recognized to have an influence on students' educational outcomes. With the goal of increasing diversity among future dental professionals, there comes a need to accommodate students of various backgrounds through the use of DE. The impact of DE on students' SCC has not been studied in previous research. This 2014 cross-sectional survey study looked at a convenience sample of dental hygiene students finishing their first or second clinical year to assess their SCC. Participating programs had both host and satellite campuses and utilized DE for didactic course delivery at the remote sites. To calculate the students' sense of community, Rovai's Classroom Community Scale (CCS) was utilized, and demographic information was collected. Six of the 13 eligible programs agreed to participate; the overall response rate for individual students was 25%. When evaluated on their sense of community, the satellite college-based students scored 26.47 CCS units and 14.51 learning subscale units lower than the host college-based students. These results suggested a negative association between the students' sense of community and their affiliation with satellite campuses when controlled for demographic variables. The findings suggest a negative trend in the SCC for dental hygiene students on remote campuses and utilizing DE for a portion of their curriculum. The article discusses the efforts of the Administration on Aging division of the U.S. Administration for Community Living to chronic illness and healthcare disparities among older adults from racial and ethnic minorities. Evidence-based prevention programs such as the Stanford University Chronic Disease Self-Management Program are cited for improvements in health outcomes under the Older Americans Act and the Reach, Program Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance framework.

Background: The Communities Putting Prevention to Work: Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) Initiative funded grantees in 45 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico to implement and expand delivery of CDSMP to older adults. We examine whether there are differences in the enrollment and completion rates of members of racial and ethnic minority groups and what sites have done to enhance their delivery of the CDSMP to such groups. Method: This study used a multi-method approach including: site visits to 6 states, telephone interviews with the 47 program grantees and delivery sites, review of program reports, and analysis of administrative data on participants, completers, workshops and leaders. Results: Grantees served 89,861 participants, including 56.3% who self-identified as White, 17.3% as Black, 5.0% as other/multi-racial, 3.2% as Asian/Asian Americans, 1.4% as American Indian/Alaskans, .8% as Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islanders, and 16.0% individuals of unknown race. Overall, completion rates averaged 74.5%, with Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders completing workshops at a higher rate (90.6%) than other groups. Completion rates for participants aged ⩾75 were higher than for younger participants. Senior centers, health care organizations, and residential facilities served 63.1% of the participants. Conclusions: Grantees have successfully delivered CDSMP to racially and ethnically diverse participants in a range of settings. As the Administration for Community Living/Administration on Aging (ACL/AoA) grantees have demonstrated, CDSMP can be brought to scale by community organizations, partnerships and networks to reach diverse populations in diverse settings. The program can be a significant tool for addressing health disparities and empowering racial/ethnic minorities to take charge, promote better health and self-management of chronic conditions. Mechanisms linking maternal nutrient restriction (MNR) to intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR) and programming of adult disease remain to be established. The impact of controlled MNR on maternal and fetal amino acid metabolism has not been studied in non-human primates. We hypothesised that MNR in pregnant baboons decreases fetal amino acid availability by mid-gestation. We determined maternal and fetal circulating amino acid concentrations at 90 d gestation (90dG, term 184dG) in control baboons fed ad libitum (C, n 8) or 70 % of C (MNR, n 6). Before pregnancy, C and MNR body weights and circulating amino acids were similar. At 90dG, MNR mothers had lower body weight than C mothers (P< 0·05). Fetal and placental weights were similar between the groups. MNR reduced maternal blood urea N (BUN), fetal BUN and fetal BUN:creatinine. Except for histidine and lysine in the C and MNR groups and glutamine in the MNR group, circulating concentrations of all amino acids were lower at 90dG compared with pre-pregnancy. Maternal circulating amino acids at 90dG were similar in the MNR and C groups. In contrast, MNR fetal β-alanine, glycine and taurine all increased. In conclusion, maternal circulating amino acids were maintained at normal levels and fetal amino acid availability was not impaired in response to 30 % global MNR in pregnant baboons. However, MNR weight gain was reduced, suggesting adaptation in maternal–fetal resource allocation in an attempt to maintain normal fetal growth. We speculate that these adaptive mechanisms may fail later in gestation when fetal nutrient demands increase rapidly, resulting in IUGR. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Endosomal sorting mechanisms mediated by AP-3 and BLOC-1 are perturbed in Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome, a human genetic condition characterized by albinism and prolonged bleeding (OMIM #203300). Additionally, mouse models defective in either one of these complexes possess defective synaptic vesicle biogenesis (Newell-Litwa et al., 2009). These synaptic vesicle phenotypes were presumed uniform throughout the brain. However, here we report that AP-3 and BLOC-1 differentially regulate the composition of presynaptic terminals in the striatum and dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Quantitative immunoelectron microscopy demonstrated that the majority of AP-3 immunoreactivity in both wild-type striatum and hippocampus localizes to presynaptic axonal compartments, where it regulates synaptic vesicle size. In the striatum, loss of AP-3 (Ap3dmh/mh) resulted in decreased synaptic vesicle size. In contrast, loss of AP-3 in the dentate gyrus increased synaptic vesicle size, thus suggesting anatomically specific AP-3-regulatory mechanisms. Loss-offunction alleles of BLOC-1, Pldnpa/pa, and Mutedmu/mu revealed that this complex acts as a brain-region-specific regulator of AP-3. In fact, BLOC-1 deficiencies selectively reduced AP-3 and AP-3 cargo immunoreactivity in presynaptic compartments within the dentate gyrus both at the light and/or electron microscopy level. However, the striatum did not exhibit these BLOC-1-null phenotypes. Our results demonstrate that distinct brain regions differentially regulate AP-3-dependent synaptic vesicle biogenesis.Wepropose that anatomically restricted mechanisms within the brain diversify the biogenesis and composition of synaptic vesicles. Reduced food availability in pregnancy influences fetal growth, obstetric outcomes and offspring health in both developing and developed countries. The objective of the present study was to determine responses to moderate global maternal nutrient restriction (MNR) during pregnancy in baboons (Papio hamadryas) ??? an established non-human primate model for pregnancy-related research. Starting at 30??d gestation (dG), twelve pregnant baboons received 70??% of food (MNR group) consumed by twenty ad libitum-fed pregnant controls. Maternal body weight, BMI, food intake and physical activity were measured before pregnancy, at 90??dG and at 165??dG (full-term 180??dG). Fetal and placental weights were recorded at the time of Caesarean section (90 and 165??dG). Activity patterns were also evaluated in fourteen non-pregnant female baboons. Behavioural observations were made in five non-pregnant, six control and four MNR animals. Pregnant baboons decreased overall physical activity and energy-expensive behaviours compared with non-pregnant baboons. In the MNR group, maternal weight, weight gain and maternal physical activity were reduced compared with the control animals. MNR decreased placental weight and volume compared with control, while fetal weight and length were unaffected. We conclude that decreased physical activity and increased usage of maternal available body stores play an important role in the maternal response to pregnancy. This article describes how job analysis, a method commonly used in personnel research and organizational psychology, provides a systematic method for documenting program staffing and service delivery that can improve evaluators' knowledge about program operations. Job analysis data can be used to increase evaluators' insight into how staffs administer programs and provide program services, interpretation of outcome data, make comparisons across programs, and assessment of programs' transferability and replication potential. Because of the central role that staffs play in the delivery of client services and client experiences, job analysis has particular promise for evaluating human services and social welfare programs. This article posits that with little added effort, job analysis can be integrated into traditional evaluation activities and the benefits of this addition will be significant. The normal ranges of hematological cell profiles and biochemistry are documented in adult non-pregnant, pregnant, juvenile, and neonatal baboons. Despite the extensive use of the baboon as a model for the study of various aspects of pregnancy, there is no data from paired mothers and their fetuses at different stages of gestation. Hematologic and biochemical profile data were obtained from eight non-pregnant female baboons, 37 mothers and 38 fetal baboons at 30 ± 2, 90 ± 2, 125 ± 2, and 175 ± 2 days of gestation (mean ± range; dGA; term, 180 dGA). Changes observed in fetal and maternal blood during normal baboon pregnancy were similar to those reported in human pregnancy. As the language minority student population in the US increases at a rapid pace, a larger number of teachers are pursuing a primary or secondary certification in English as a Second Language (ESL). This case study describes the professional development efforts to provide an ESL endorsement to a group of K-12 teachers in a large mid-western university. It describes the systemic nature underlying their professional development, highlighting the influence of different constituencies. These range from federal, state, county and district levels to the university teacher preparation program, as well as the teachers themselves. We developed a system that allows individual feeding of adult baboons, 8-15 years of age, maintained in an outdoor group social environment. The purpose of the system is to allow careful monitoring and control of individual diet. Baboons were housed in two group cages, 16 females and a single male in one and 12 females and a single male in the other. Baboons exited the group cage once daily and passed along a chute and over a scale into individual cages where they received their individual diets. Food intake was monitored during their 2-hour stay in the individual cages. Baboons rapidly learned to use this system. Food intake and weight were stable within 20 days. Food consumed decreased during the period of sexual receptivity. The maintenance of the group social environment allowed observations on the group's dominance structure and the relationship of dominance to food consumption. Speed of food access in the group cage was related to dominance. Dominance was not related to food consumed in individual cages. This article focuses on how a social dance can help to support intellectual, emotional and motor functions in older people with mental health problems. Funded through generous donations, the tea dance has been operating for just over two years and have many benefits. Social dancing increases physical activity, and enables people to move more freely. Muscular tone and basic movement styles have improved, leading to increased confidence in taking part in everyday activities. Social dancing seems to support spontaneous activity and stimulate people to communicate with others. Since everyone is a social creatures, and dancing is a social activity that contributes towards improved self-esteem and a more positive outlook on life. People can improve concentration as they focus on the dance steps and movement. Social dancing seems also to have a reminiscence role. The person's feelings about his or her identity are prompted when he or she remembers the social skills and procedures ranging from asking for a dance to escorting a partner back to their seat.

Objectives:Pregnant baboons were studied to determine the precise time of the switch from myometrial contractures to contractions in relation to photoperiod after laparotomy and at parturition. We compared the patterns recorded in baboons to those we have previously reported in pregnant rhesus monkeys to determine fundamental primate characteristics.Methods:Seven pregnant baboons (126-160 days' gestation) were instrumented with femoral arterial and venous catheters and electrodes for myometrial electromyogram. All animals were subjected to a 14-hour light: 10-hour dark photoperiod. Myometrial activity was monitored using a computer-based data acquisition system. Onset time for all switches was noted and standardized against time of lights off. Animals were studied at three stages of pregnancy (stage 1, first 10 days after laparotomy; stage 2, more than 10 days after laparotomy and more than 10 days before cesarean; and stage 3, 10 days before cesarean section or vaginal delivery).Results:All baboons demonstrated myometrial switches for a variable number of days preceding parturition. Onset of darkness was 0 hours. Average time of stage 1 switch onset was 2.17 ± 0.60 hours and was not different from stage 3 switch onset, which was -1.00 ± 0.27 hours.Conclusions:Myometrial contractile patterns showed clear photoperiodicity in the switch from contractures to contractions in late pregnancy in the baboon. The relationship of the switch from contractures to contractions was not altered by surgical laparotomy. There was a significant difference in the time of switch in relation to photoperiod between pregnant rhesus monkeys and baboons. However, the fact that a significant photoperiod exists in both species indicates a fundamental similarity in the switch from contractures to contractions in primate pregnancy. ABSTRACT Background and Purpose. Physiotherapists use a variety of techniques aimed at improving lung volumes and secretion clearance in patients after surgery. Periodic continu-ous positive airway pressure (PCPAP) is used to treat patients following elective upper abdominal surgery. However, the optimal method of application has not been identified, more specifically, the dosage of application of PCPAP. The present randomized controlled trial com-pared the effects of two dosages of PCPAP application and 'traditional' physiotherapy upon functional residual capacity (FRC), vital capacity (VC), oxyhaemoglobin saturation (SpO 2 ), incidence of post-operative pulmonary complications and length of stay with a control group receiving 'traditional' physiotherapy only. Method. Fifty-seven subjects were randomly allo-cated to one of three groups. All groups received 'traditional' physiotherapy twice daily for a minimum of three post-operative days. In addition, two groups received PCPAP for 15 or 30 minutes, four times per day, for three days. Results. Fifty subjects (39 male; 11 female) com-pleted the study. There were no significant differences in any variables between the three groups. The overall incidence of post-operative pulmonary complications was 22% in the con-trol group, 11% and 6% in the PCPAP 15-minute and PCPAP 30-minute groups, respectively. Length of hospital stay was not significantly different between the groups but for subjects who developed post-operative pulmonary complications, the length of stay was significantly greater (Z = -2.32; p = 0.021). Conclusions. The addition of PCPAP to a traditional physio-therapy post-operative treatment regimen after upper abdominal surgery did not significantly affect physiological or clinical outcomes. The analogues of the coenzyme NADP+, nicotinamide-8-bromo-adenine dinucleotide phosphate (Nbr8ADP+) and 3-iodopyridine-adenine dinucleotide phosphate (io3PdADP+), were prepared. Nbr8ADP+ was found to be active in the hydrogen transfer and io3PdADP+ is a coenzyme competitive inhibitor for 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. The binding of NADP+, NADPH and NADPH together with 6-phosphogluconate as well as that of both analogues to crystals of the enzyme 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase has been investigated at 0.6-nm resolution using difference electron density maps. The molecules bind in a similar position in a cleft in the enzyme subunit distant from the dimer interface. The orientation of the coenzyme in the site has been determined from the io3pdADP+-NADP+ difference density. The ternary complex difference density extends beyond that of the nicotinamide moiety of the coenzyme and tentatively indicates substrate binding. No clear identification of the bromine atom of Nbr8ADP+ can be made. How- ever, the analogue is bound more deeply in the cleft than is NADP+. The NADPH density is the most clearly defined and has thus been used to fit a molecular model using an interactive graphics system, checking for preferred geometry. A possible conformation is presented which is significantly different from that of NAD+ in the lactate dehydrogenase ternary complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

French business letter writing in writer oriented. The primary virtues of the French business letter are prudence, conciseness, and precision. It is extremely important to convey the required degree of respect and the writer's expectations of the response. Japanese business letter writing is oriented to the relationship, or the space, between the writer and the reader. The concern is with the format and language which will most effectively establish or maintain the appropriate relationship between reader and writer. A Japanese business letter consists of three parts, an introduction, body and conclusion. The body of the Japanese business letter consists of a statement of the reason for writing.
